This edit does not actually change the width of the template. If you can actually provide evidence that the previous version changes the width of the template on purged instances of the template then I will be happy to correct this. If you cannot, then I would suggest that in future you consult editors with more experience of templatespace before reverting in future. I can't replicate this observation with either IE or Firefox. The background change was deliberate. Anyway, I'm going to take this to the template talk page, as I see no basis in the rationale that a minor change in the default width (which I can't even reproduce) will have any deleterious effect on existing layout. List of Countries by Unemploment Rate

CIA's world factbook is out of date by a huge margin. Even United States Unemployment rates are given as that of 2008 although the Fed updates it every month. I suggest we use the latest statistical updates by every country's Central Bank rather than relying on another encyclopedia source which is much behind wikipedia. I agree with you. It will be a large task in updating the list etc, but I think it will be worth it. I have also updated the map as Australia and Hong Kong's unemployment rates have gone over 5%. I will continue to update the map as the article is updated.

United Kingdom foreign-born population by country of birth map

Hi. I've spotted a problem with a map you created. On File:United Kingdom foreign born population by country of birth.png, the lowest population category on the key represents groups with fewer than 19,999 members, but the source only gives figures for countries of birth with 21,000 members or more. That means that any country of birth not in the source has a group size of fewer than 21,000, not fewer than 19,999 as the map suggests. Do you think you could fix this?

Also, I thought you might want to know that someone appears to be using your map to promote the BNP on YouTube (see here). I'm not sure if there's any way to stop them from using it, but I wouldn't be too happy myself. Cordless Larry (talk) 12:59, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the notification. I have now fixed the problem on the maps. Also, the BNP are allowed to use my map if they wish, as it's licensed into the public domain. Although I highly doubt that it is the BNP who made that video. I'm not too concerned as the video is just a screenshot and has gained very little interest from YouTube viewers. RE: Goatse

It was unused except for a case of vandalism I had to clean up, so I deleted it (I didn't note the recent usage). It's also unfree. This isn't about censorship, don't worry. I'm just opposed to the usage of fair-use images in cases like this; however, hiding the image upon page load is a bit perplexing. That's not outright censorship, but that shouldn't happen (consider, for example, what would happen if we coded Wikipedia to highlight all usages of "fuck" in black, so that they'd only be visible if selected). In relation to the image deletion, I didn't know it was recently used on Goatse; rather, as I mentioned, it had only been used for vandalism. And, as it was unfree, I felt it justified to sidestep the seven-day wait and just delete it. Apologies to you guys for disrupting your consensus-gathering. In this case, I'm not quite sure this is being handled in the best way. If people really want an image there, then it shouldn't be hidden; that's censoring, which overrides local consensus. However, I also don't think the image is completely necessary. It isn't because I'm offended by it, but it doesn't provide much encyclopedic information. That second point is personal opinion, so you don't have to take it into account; please consider the first point, though. Master of Puppets 15:14, 16 October 2009 (UTC)

I understand that perspective, but the problem is that it can be applied universally. One can never realistically visualize something if they've only read a description. Again, this is a matter of consensus, and it seems that people have already agreed on using an image, so I won't attempt to change that. Number of hooks in updates

Just one minor point - standard length of a DYK update ATM is 8 hooks, I notice that you've done a couple with only 7. Please try to stick to the standard length as it helps with project co-ordination and prevents a backlog from forming. The ITN people will usually make adjustments if there is a gap, but if you start posting 7-hook updates, they may shorten it which means we have the same problem in the opposite direction. Best just to stick to eight hooks per update IMO. Gatoclass (talk) 01:01, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

The words "Fighting Squirrels" are quite interesting. When I reviewed your ALT it read "adult cartoon character", so I pressumed that meant adult and not pornographic. Sorry about that. I always forget about Ireland 'cause it's never mentioned on BBC News etc. I've tried to include Ireland. Info about Ireland can be found via Portal:Current events, where there are links to various Irish new sources. On another note, having two columns of refs creates a lot of white space with Firefox. I'm seeing two columns of refs, and the top of a third colum links to Commons and Wikinews, but the rest of it is blank. RE: Flooding

As well as the reasons I posted on the talk page of the article, they are separate land masses. Someone navigating to the article will either be particularly interested in one or the other (Ireland or the United Kingdom), so it makes sense for them to appear as separate sections in the contents. In a sense, I do feel they should be separate articles, but there is not enough to create one, and there likely will never be. If you can provide any reasoning as to why 'chronological ordering makes more sense surely' (sic), then please do. Thanks, Vivara (talk) 22:30, 21 November 2009 (UTC)

'Chronological ordering also affects areas based on their geography. People from Wales and south Britain might look earlier into the article, because there was a seperate storm. People up north might look later on towards the storms that have been flooding this week. It also builds up a patchwork of how the persistant rains cumulated to the flooding point through saturation of the soil'

The contents section clearly indicates the separate storms. We have added separate sections to one part of the '18–21 November' part because I felt it needed separation. Your argument makes little or no sense in real terms. Yes, people interested in the first storm will go to the section about the first storm. The only place affected in a major way was the United Kingdom, so no problems there. And people interested in the second storm will, yes, go the the section about the second storm. Separating it into 'Ireland' and 'Great Britain' does not affect this. In fact, it provides easy access of interest to the user. I also do not see how the separation changes the way the saturation of soil is seen in the article, and feel this is a very minor issue compared to the overall one. If there is a large consensus to revert the separation (and if there is, we will see it due to the feature on the main page), then it will be seen on the talk page. The talk page is a place to disscuss how to imrove the article. I just can't see how your comment is doing that. The user of language makes it seem like a comment you'd find in a forum, where you are merely describing how things happen in China. Please make sure that all comments are directly linked to the construction of the article. Otherwise we'll end up with loads of arguements amongst users and an overly large talk page. Thanks for the message. I've tried to be concise as I could but I really felt there were some glaring ommissions (no mention of the National Aquarium for example). I won't be too upset if you want to edit them further. I'm afraid I didn't see the link to the Plymouth History page. Although I'm a Londoner, Plymouth has always been my second home - Mum grew up there and Dad was born in Saltash. No probs. As you clearly have an interest in the Plymouth area, you might care to have a look at what I've done to St Budeaux, to see if I've missed anything. There appeared to have been a mangled merge in the past into St. Budeaux, Plymouth, but I could see no reason for a disambiguation (there are no other St Budeauxs (??!?) on Wikipedia) and, of course, Wikipedia UK policy is to spell it St Budeaux, not St. Budeaux. The article could do with a bit of work (a few citations wouldn't go amiss), but I haven't had time to tackle that.

I also added Devonport to the Devon template. As a former county borough and, at one time more important than Plymouth itself, I thought it was worthy of being listed as a major Devon settlement. Skinsmoke (talk) 16:49, 29 January 2010 (UTC)

Voting intention graph

Hi, I've just noticed that the United Kingdom general election, 2010 article says that your voting intentions graph is from Ipsos MORI's data, but it looks like it's a collection of data from all pollsters: ComRes' rogue poll from May 2009 sticks out like a sore thumb. I'm not sure quite how legitimate it is to do this, as a good deal of the variations will be from differences in polling methodology, rather than any legitimate changes in opinion. It is a nice graph, though; might I suggest that you either choose one pollster and stick to it, or use a moving average to smooth out the discrepancies? —Wereon (talk) 00:11, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Removal of my name / Deletion log for Google

Hi Jolly Janner. My page was deleted several times upon my request yet my name still appears and is thus listed in the Google index. I would like my name and the deletion log to be fully suppressed at that point in order that no information appears anymore on Wikipedia and Google. Please provide me with with advice or help me contact the appropriate Wikipedia person if you cannot do anything, it has been months that my name appears on Wikipedia and Google and I do not know what to do. I have sent removal request to Google already and they deny them saying that my name was kept on Wikipedia and therefore cannot be removed. As Hassocks said, you don't need to be an admin to--Musiceditor123 (talk) 18:37, 20 June 2010 (UTC) review hooks, anyone can review hooks and anyone can move hooks to Next update (you have to be an admin to move hooks from Next to the official queue, but just because the official queue is protected indefinitely). I started working at DYK just about a month ago, in pretty much the same way as you; I found out about DYK and nominated one of my articles, and got frustrated about the amount of time it was taking anyone to review it so I started reviewing all the ones that were ahead of it in line. There are a lot of rules to keep in mind, but you learn pretty quickly by doing, and I would guess that at least half of the most active DYK reviewers right now have started at around the same time as me or even more recently (Orlady, How do you turn this on, Davidwr, and some others), so it doesn't take long at all to get the hang of things and to become a big part of DYK.

You'll get used to things quickly, but just for a quick intro if you haven't figured this out already, with each no you generally just need to check the length of the hook (less than 200 characters), the length or expansion of the article (at least 1500 characters readable text, and expanded 5x if it's not a new article), the date of creation/expansion (within the past 5 days), whether there's an inline citation for the fact in the hook, and general goodness/badness of the article (there aren't a lot of specific rules on that, but if an article just sucks for some reason you can mention it at the DYK page and say you won't pass it until it gets cleaned up). I like to use this JavaScript to count hook lengths (although after you do a couple hundred of them you can pretty much eyeball whether or not they're too long), and this tool for counting article length.

Removal

Hi. The edits were from one of several copycat accounts of a longtime hard-banned user, User:JarlaxleArtemis. Some time ago, this user created a new persona named "Grawp" after the Harry Potter character and has posted instructions on how to disrupt this site at Encyclopedia Dramatica. These don't pop up often anymore, but when they do, the edit summaries are full of insults toward admins who have come up against these attack in the past. the attack against me referred to my long-ago username, since abandoned per my own choice in good standing. Somehow, these kids feel that calling me by that username is an insult when it clearly is not. A CU just turned up about seven more socks from the same user, all with the same taunts and insults. • Decimomannu in Sardinia as the Spanish planes are based there
• Trapani as Italian planes are departing for missions in Libya from there too
• Sigonella there are Danish and Italian planes departing from there
• Souda Bay French and Qatari planes depart from there for mission over Libya
• Gioia del Colle has now also 2 British Typoons for mission ready

to many ships

This is not gonna work to put in all the ships of the various navies in your map. My suggestion: take out all the ships, which are part of Operation Unified Protector and replace them with the area of their operations as per this NATO map [2]. and then put only the ships in your map that are not part of Unified Protector. noclador (talk) 17:44, 25 March 2011 (UTC)

• USS Barry (DDG-52), an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer
• USS Stout (DDG-55), another Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer
• USS Florida (SSGN-728), an Ohio-class cruise missile submarine

and the UK submarine

• HMS Triumph (S93), a Trafalgar-class submarine
