Local Council Elections 2011

I’m sorry if my explanation was a little brief, I was late for work, and assumed that being more experienced editor than myself, would see the problem easily.

The convention seems to be to drop titles such as district, borough and so on (as you can see from the template). Whilst some of articles don’t follow this convention, they are unlikely to be correctly linked in the template as it would be a total pain in the arse to check every single link. This means that editors of these articles will need to edit the template themselves. It is important the links on the template match up to the relevant local elections article. As this is part of a series, there are also the previous versions to consider as well. If you still feel that South Hams needs to be changed, please make sure that any links in other articles (including previous years), are also changed. --Trappedinburnley (talk) 16:50, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

I'm aware that some articles don't follow this, such as North Devon Council, but South Hams District Council does. This is why I only changed the link for the South Hams. I will make sure all links are corrected, but 2011 is fortunately the only year Wikipedia has written an article for the election to South Hams District Council. RE: Oh Internet screenshot

I removed that image since there wasn't any room for it in the "Oh Internet" section, and it would pushed the encyclopediadramatica.ch infobox downwards and into an awkward position. I considered placing it in the "Content" section, but it would be both distracting and awkward to place it in a section that doesn't have anything to do with OhInternet. I also have some doubts about whether that screenshot could be used on that subject under fair use. OhInternet is only relevant to the article with regards with how ED ended. The minefield that is List of countries by literacy rate

So far, so good. Using UNESCO as the main source is a sound editorial choice. It's the least controversial, most complete, and most comparable source available. But there are still a lot of changes and reverts taking place.

Don't mix UNESCO and non-UNESCO data

In cases where an editor disputes the UNESCO figures, I recommend not polluting the UNESCO literacy rate column by turning it into a range. Instead use ONUnicorn's suggestion of a separate column. Design the table to discourage editing of the UNESCO columns. Ideally they should be updated only once a year. There will always be vandals who set their country's numbers to 100% or their enemy's to zero, but try to channel well meaning edits into the "alternative" column.

Only one such alternative column is needed. Only the headline figure need be inserted there; the source, date, methodology, and any detailed figures can be explained in the footnotes. The "Year of Estimate" column can be replaced by the alternative column, since the year should be the same for all rows containing UNESCO data; only alternative figures can have a different year, and that can be explained in the footnotes.

Completeness

Every country in the world needs to be in the table, whether UNESCO (or anyone) reports literacy data for them or not. Yes, this means a return to a table with some "N/A" data values or the equivalent. Otherwise, every five minutes some editor will be challenging or modifying the table.

Example

At the bottom I've mocked up an example of how one might apply these ideas to five types of rows, with particular attention to meaningful sorting when some columns are empty:

My example uses some hidden trickery so that sorting by UNESCO literacy rate uses the UNESCO literacy rate if available, or the non-UNESCO rate if UNESCO is not available. This is the same effect you were achieving by putting non-UNESCO data in what I'm calling the UNESCO literacy rate column. I think it's a useful effect for readers who have simple questions (e.g. "Which is more literate, Bangladesh or Taiwan?"). It works well for the big picture, but produces slightly non-intuitive results when sorting by gender difference, adds complexity to the annual updates of the table, and is a potential target of sneaky vandalism. If you think it's more trouble than it's worth you can leave out the hidden sort templates.

I like this idea a lot and I'm very grateful for your input in helping this article. I don't think there is anything I would do different to your suggestion. The first task is deciding which countries to include. List of sovereign states doesn't list the following as UN member states or observers:

• Macau
• Taiwan
• Guadeloupe
• Martinique
• Réunion
• Cayman Islands
• Guam
• Puerto Rico

Yet we have data for them in the article. Perhaps another section could be added for "other territories"? Then one would have to decide whether that section should contain every disputed territory in the world and there are a lot. I'm thinking the best cause of action is an exhaustive list of every UN member state or observer and then a separate list for the territories, which have data and a note on their status. The decision to edit without consensus and then promote Template:Did you know nominations/Operating Passenger Railroad Stations Thematic Resource (New Jersey) seems inappropriate. Can you please revert it to the original hook? (I've seen this happen before but do not understand why some editors feel they have prerogative make last minute changes just before going to publication on the main page.) @Djflem: the hook was posted to Template:Did you know/Preparation area 6. Prep areas are not protected so you can edit it yourself if you feel any changes I made were not appropriate. I've done as you suggested & reverted text to the approved hook. To be clear, I don't think the changes you made were in inappropriate (to the hook), but I do question the propriety of editing an approved hook when transferring to a prep area, however well-intended it may be. Djflem, Jolly Janner, it's a bad idea for nominators to edit their own hook once they are in prep. The promoter—who is acting as a backup reviewer in this case—presumably had a reason for changing the hook, and has always been free to do so just as other editors are can edit prep hooks and admins can edit queue hooks. The nominator is equally welcome to object to the change in a request at WT:DYK if they think the changes are not a good idea. Not all reviews are ideal, and there can be issues with hooks that a reviewer didn't spot, or the hook would be better for a little trimming or rephrasing. Hooks submitted to DYK are subject to change and always have been, which is why you want to monitor them through the process. A nominator editing their own hook in prep or queue is actually a red flag, and I've reverted such edits to prep in the past. BlueMoonset (talk) 04:23, 8 January 2016 (UTC)

BlueMoonset, for transparency, I asked Jolly Janner to make the change. I agree that it might appropriate to make small copyrighting changes for language corrections, such as spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Adding or deleting content/context that changes the original nominator's intention is better done before promoting with the existing mechanism of offering ALTs on the template within the DYK nom page. This guarantees that consensus has been reached and, as Jolly Janner suggests, provides an edit summary for the hook history which would otherwise be lost. This strikes me good practice in the spirit of good faith. While this may slow down the process and add pressure to come up with high value hooks it diminishes any sense of impropriety that one editor is promoting his/her preferred version. Image hooks

Hi, thanks for helping out with the prep sets. I noticed that you promoted two hooks that had exceptionally good images, and put them in without the images. I moved Template:Did you know nominations/Corn stew to an image hook, and think that Template:Did you know nominations/A Meat Stall with the Holy Family Giving Alms should definitely be moved to an image slot when another prep set opens up. I also noticed both were great candidates on the image quality alone, but here's my reasoning for not including them:

• The picture of the corn stew is not of Mazamorra, which is the basis of the hook.
• A Meat Stall with the Holy Family Giving Alms is a recently featured picture and may be worthy of its own inclusion on the Main Page. On second thoughts, I'm not sure how likely this is, since there are a lot of featured pictures out there.

I'm more than happy for you to move the corn stew to another prep area. The painting is supposed to tie in with the Sunday after Epiphany (10 January), so prep four would be ideal (sacrificing Al-Masjid an-Nabawi as picture slot). Thanks Jolly Ω Janner 17:17, 8 January 2016 (UTC)

Would be best to follow at WT:DYK where I posted a list of potential nominations. I think "positive" was the way one user wrote it. I was proposing a cute whale pic instead of the current one in prep 2 (Template:Did you know nominations/Porpoise) and a more relevent hook for Pepe at Template talk:Did you know nominations/Pepe the frog. I have seen that you have actively participated in edition of "2016 Ouagadougou attacks" which has a "Reactions" section filled with quotes same as "Bacha Khan University attacks". I did not notice that you advocated those to be moved to Wikiquotes. Is there a particular reason for the enthusiasm to get "reactions" to "Bacha Khan University attacks" moved to Wikiquotes? Is there any valid reason you are leaving articles that have been marked ready for promotion for several weeks sitting in the Older nominations section of Template talk:Did you know when you wish to have them scheduled on a specific date? Unless you are trying to confuse promoters, nominations for special occasions are supposed to be moved to the Special occasion holding area once approved. --Allen3 ^talk 18:49, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
