Exploratory edit

Hello Bristol. I can add quite a lot to this page but must declare that I worked there for two years. I'l stick to some basic facts first. But would be glad of feedback. Thelisteninghand (talk) 21:41, 26 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

FAR notice re J. K. Rowling edit

An editor has nominated J. K. Rowling for a featured article review here. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets featured article criteria. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Delist" the article's featured status. The instructions for the review process are here. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 04:05, 18 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

JK Rowling - relevant to this Wikiproject edit

Hello Wikiproject members!

I noticed that we're getting loads of notifications on this project about JK Rowling - a topic that it seemed obvious to me was out of scope of this Wikiproject, since she's not mentioned anywhere in the Bristol pages, and Bristol is not mentioned anywhere on her page, and I couldn't imagine how it would be useful to most members of this Wikiproject to be seeing notifications about issues with the JKR page.

I have therefore removed that page from the Wikiproject, to give us a more manageable and focussed set of notifications. However, that decision is being questioned, so please do say here if you have a strong feeling either way as to whether it's useful for JK Rowling, and notifications about that article, to be included in the Bristol Wikiproject.

Sea Mills edit

Hello, I run a heritage project at Sea Mills and have been making some small improvements to that page. Help and comments welcome, particularly re structure. There's lots more to do. Soundmary (talk) 11:30, 30 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

User script to detect unreliable sources edit

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Bristol / Hanover Wiki Meetup edit

It's been a long time since Bristol Wikimedians have held an in-person meetup. I have arranged one for Saturday 16th September and it's a special occasion because a delegation of Wikimedians from Bristol's twin city of Hanover will be present. Come along if you want to meet other experienced wiki contributors, if you want to chat to our German friends, or even if you are a wiki newcomer and want to find out more about the Wikimedia projects. See more details and please sign up on the meta page. MartinPoulter (talk) 08:33, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
