PMML News

2016 was an awesome year at PMML. 2017 is looking to be just as busy and exciting.

News from 2016

  • Year in Review [1]
  • Interns and I added numerous WWI songs as articles to Wikipedia. Then, I worked with the Andy Bullen at the Illinois Digital Archives who converted the scanned scores to MP3's with audio recognition software. I wrote an article with Andy about the project for a forthcoming issue of Computers in Libraries. P.S. Andy Bullen really needs a Wikipedia article written about him as he has been quietly working in digital humanities for over 20 years.
  • Actively planning for WWI centennial celebrations [2] [3]
  • Colonel Pritzker received the Spirit of Hope Award [4]

Coming in 2017

  • More television episodes on WTTW (both Citizen Soldier and Pritzker Military Presents need to have their articles updated -- can you help with that?)
  • New Wikipedia interns start this week. One is working on WWI general officers & the other will be working on articles on Women in the military -- we're planning on using the bot created list from the Wikipedia Project Women in Red.
  • PMML received the Robin D. S. Higham Collection, which I am currently cataloging. It's over 2,000 books on aviation, the American Civil War, WWI and WWII.
  • And, of course, I've made a ton of edits to #1lib1ref already

Happy editing! TeriEmbrey (talk) 21:27, 25 January 2017 (UTC)

Could we talk on the phone?

I just posted a very, very rough late night draft of an idea.

Would it be possible to talk with you on the telephone about next steps? I need some help, but seems to me it's a good volunteer project, and that ad agency probono work and donated space and time would make monetary costs negligible.

There is a very great need for something to capture the political energy of the country right now in a positive way. Wiki-Politics could do much good by encouraging a network of local volunteers across the country that would serve all partisan efforts and maximize the grassroots input into every political party, candidate and issues committee, and news organizations would love the prospect of overnight reporting in the 2020 Presidential race if not sooner.

DYK for Trying to trash Betsy DeVos

On 2 March 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Trying to trash Betsy DeVos, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that readers requested that Glenn McCoy be terminated from the Belleville News-Democrat after the newspaper published his editorial cartoon, Trying to trash Betsy DeVos? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Trying to trash Betsy DeVos. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Trying to trash Betsy DeVos), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Unbanning advice

Your message at my Talk Page has stuck with me, as you seem to be one of the few editors to actually look at the WP:ANI dispute with open eyes and try to see the situation for what it was. Even if I was far from being THE problem with that discussion, I can definitely see that I could have handled it better (even if it would have still ended up as a trainwreck). For this reason, I am asking for input on what direction I should take with getting unbanned.

On one hand, the ANI dispute itself and the result are easily ArbCom-worthy. However, I really don't want to have to go through the exact same dispute again and so, I was thinking of just going to WP:AN and making an unban request focusing on "Why I shouldn't be banned from comics" instead of "What happened at the dispute". But I'm also worried that, if I post an unban request there, certain users that I won't name will immediately accuse it of being disruptive (no matter what it says), or someone will try to disrupt it with more accusations. What is your opinion on what I should do? DarkKnight2149 20:12, 10 March 2017 (UTC)

@Darkknight2149: If you want to post an unban request at WP:AN, here's what I have to say. You said you want to focus on Why I shouldn't be banned from comics instead of What happened at the dispute, and I think that's a step in the right direction in terms of making a successful unban request in general. The other important matter is focusing on the other thing you said above, I can definitely see that I could have handled it better. If you know how to handle yourself better, tell us in your request. The reason why this is important is because folks will be looking at your request to ascertain whether you understand why you were topic banned, and what you will do to avoid that behavior in the future when you contribute in this topic area. I JethroBT drop me a line 20:58, 12 March 2017 (UTC)
I see your point (they want to know that this won't happen again). Though, the problem with the ban to begin with, is that it doesn't have anything to do with the topic area. I was banned for the self-contained argument at ANI, not for anything that happened at WP:COMICS. Regardless, thanks for the advice. DarkKnight2149 19:30, 13 March 2017 (UTC)

Unable to edit on wikimedia

Hi, I JethroBT, Sorry for contacting you through here about unblocking questions, but the question is that i'm frequently being affected by blocking on ip range that i'm usually part of, and this time i've been blocked for editing on wikimedia, and i'm not even able to edit on my user page or talk page on wikimedia in order to request for an unblocking request.

I've contacted two administrators i believe for more than a week, but the question still unsolved and there's no answer.

Since, you are an administrator, i'm contacting, expecting you can solve it, please..

I'm being affected by ip ranging on 105.168.0.0/18. Thank you, Dorivaldo de C. M. dos Santos (talk) 19:59, 31 March 2017 (UTC)

@Dorivaldo de C. M. dos Santos: Thanks for your request. There's a permission called IP block exempt available that will effectively override any IP rangeblocks. Can I ask how frequently this has happened to you? I JethroBT drop me a line 16:38, 5 April 2017 (UTC)
@Dorivaldo de C. M. dos Santos: Ah, I just noticed that you were given this permission yesterday! Looks like you should be all set. Thanks, I JethroBT drop me a line 17:31, 5 April 2017 (UTC)
@I JethroBT: Hi, Thank You for your attention, I just noticed that I'm still not able to edit on my user page on meta.wikimedia.org in order to request for an IP block exempt. The frequency it's happening, lately, is high, i guess it is the fourth time, and third this year. The problem I found, is because of users on same range IP address misusing Wikimedia's web sites.
Thank You, once again,
Best
Dorivaldo de C. M. dos Santos (talk) 18:36, 5 April 2017 (UTC)
@Dorivaldo de C. M. dos Santos: I'm not an administrator on Meta, so you'll need to make a request to a Steward to get IP-block exempt on that project. Probably the fastest way to get in touch with one is to use the IRC channel for Stewards (#wikimedia-stewards connect) and write !steward in chat. I JethroBT drop me a line 19:57, 7 April 2017 (UTC)

Re: Janus Azucena

I know you blocked him per the ANI discussion, but while we did hope he would turn a new leaf and cooperate with us regarding his behaviour, it looks like no amount of messages would convince him - he simply "doesn't give a damn" and would disregard any notices we throw at him. Perhaps Malinaccier was right, an indef block wouldn't hurt for a hardheaded, uncooperative user. Blake Gripling (talk) 00:55, 4 September 2017 (UTC)

@Blakegripling ph: Malinaccier makes a fair point, and I certainly considered it. The editor is actually allowed to remove the block notice, though. It's only declined unblock requests that they cannot remove. They also have no prior blocks on their account. I'd prefer to wait and see in this case. I JethroBT drop me a line 01:11, 4 September 2017 (UTC)
Point taken, though the way I see it, I doubt he would even consider heeding to our advice and is pretty much putting himself into so much trouble. Blake Gripling (talk) 04:02, 4 September 2017 (UTC)
@Blakegripling ph: Maybe. Their reaction does not inspire confidence, for sure, but I have seen all sorts of bad reactions to blocks, and editors have sometimes been able to avoid the bad behavior on the other side of them. I've never been blocked, but I imagine it feels pretty awful if you're someone who's invested in the project. I wouldn't object to an indefinite block if another admin felt it was appropriate, but I'm gonna stick with this course of action for now. I JethroBT drop me a line 05:00, 4 September 2017 (UTC)
Yeah, a wait and see approach wouldn't hurt either. I just don't feel that this person is fit to be an editor here for a number of reasons. Blake Gripling (talk) 05:17, 4 September 2017 (UTC)

Wikipedia Asian Month 2017: Invitation to Participate

Hello! Last year, you signed up to participate in Wikipedia Asian Month (WAM) 2016 on the English Wikipedia. The event was an international success, with hundreds of editors creating thousands of articles on Asian topics across dozens of different language versions of Wikipedia.

I'd like to invite you to join us for Wikipedia Asian Month 2017, which once again lasts through the month of November. The goal is for users to create new articles on Asian-related content, each at least 3,000 bytes and 300 words in length. Editors who create at least four articles will receive a Wikipedia Asian Month postcard!

Also be sure to check out the Wikipedia Asian Art Month affiliate event - creating articles on Asian art topics can get you a Metropolitan Museum of Art postcard!

ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, I JethroBT. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

  Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC has closed with a consensus that candidates at WP:RFA must disclose whether they have ever edited for pay and that administrators may never use administrative tools as part of any paid editing activity, except when they are acting as a Wikipedian-in-Residence or when the payment is made by the Wikimedia Foundation or an affiliate of the WMF.
  • Editors responding to threats of harm can now contact the Wikimedia Foundation's emergency address by using Special:EmailUser/Emergency. If you don't have email enabled on Wikipedia, directly contacting the emergency address using your own email client remains an option.

  Technical news

  • A tag will now be automatically applied to edits that blank a page, turn a page into a redirect, remove/replace almost all content in a page, undo an edit, or rollback an edit. These edits were previously denoted solely by automatic edit summaries.

Edit-a-thon at MCA Chicago

Hi JethroBT ! I'm new to the city and to the Wikipedia community here. I'm hosting my first edit-a-thon here in a few days at the MCA Chicago. It'd be great if you could come out and share this with any other Wikimedians you know. The event is hosted by Blacklunchtable, which is a collaborative project between me and Heathart. Hope to see you there! Fishantena (talk) 23:22, 5 February 2018 (UTC)

@Fishantena: Hey Fishtena, thanks for letting me know about the event and I'm real sorry I couldn't be there. I've been wanting to support the events organized through Black Lunch Table for some time now. My daughter was recently hospitalized, so I wasn't able to focus on much else at the time. Thankfully, she is doing better now. I hope the event went well, and if there are future opportunities to help with event planning or inviting participants with Black Lunch Table, let me know. Thanks, I JethroBT drop me a line 23:14, 16 February 2018 (UTC)

Hi!

Hello! Just stopping by to say hello. It's been a long time. I am planning to come back and do some more edits. Glad to see you're still around. Miss Bono [hello, hello!] 16:23, 15 February 2018 (UTC)

@Miss Bono: What a nice surprise to see on my talk page! I have been doing well, and while I'm not editing as much on en.wiki recently (I have a job at the Wikimedia Foundation now and I have a six-month old daughter now), I am still keeping track of things here on English Wikipedia and with larger movement topics as a part of my work. Are you working on anything special right now with your edits? I JethroBT drop me a line 23:15, 16 February 2018 (UTC)
Congratulations on the baby! And on the job at the WMF, that must be really cool!. To be honest, I am still trying to find my way back here. I don't even know where to start. But I know I want to... Best regards! Miss Bono [hello, hello!] 13:20, 19 February 2018 (UTC)

Pritzker Military Museum & Library and Pritzker Military Literature Award

...has been in the news lately. See: [[5]], [[6]] and [[7]]

TeriEmbrey (talk) 18:59, 15 February 2018 (UTC)

@TeriEmbrey: Hey Teri, thanks for letting me know-- I'll see if I can make some contributions to the articles over the weekend. By the way, a few of us Chicago-based editors started a group recently: the Wikimedians of Chicago User Group. We're still in the process of building ourselves, but I've been looking around for spaces to host semi-regular, casual meetups for Chicago-based editors, and wondered whether the Pritzker Military Museum & Library might be able to host us. I'd also like to see if we can arrange some time (either as a part of these meetups or separately) around training for your staff or time dedicated work on topics of interest (like we did before). Let me know if you'd like to discuss further. Thanks, I JethroBT drop me a line 23:43, 16 February 2018 (UTC)
PMML might be able to host occasionally. I'll need to check first. If you have a date or dates in mind, please let me know. TeriEmbrey (talk) 15:39, 20 February 2018 (UTC)

Need Admin help for La Luna Sangre

Hi, my name is Pipamidalton and I’ve been editing in WP since September last year but thoroughly enjoy the experience. I’ve focused mainly on Philippine tv series because I noticed they are written by people in good faith but with a poor command of English,. In the beginning, most inputs were awkwardly phrased and convoluted. I’ve tried my best to clean them all, and then summarized as concise as possible. I’ve been monitoring the articles in my watchlist to update details, etc. now that this particular tv series La Luna Sangre is wrapping up in 7 days (it had 185 episodes in all), user 216.172.253.184 blanked several sections. I’ve tried to use usertalk but can’t get a connection. I’ve manually reverted the edits but I’m afraid it would start again. Please help or warn the user please. Thanks Pipamidalton (talk) 22:00, 21 February 2018 (UTC)

@Pipamidalton: Hey there, thanks for letting me know. I've been away from English Wikipedia for a bit. It looks like the blanking from 216.172.253.184 (talk · contribs) was limited to that one day. Were there any other IP addresses involved, or have you seen this kind of disruptive activity from other accounts? Thanks, I JethroBT drop me a line 14:21, 9 March 2018 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – March 2018

News and updates for administrators from the past month (February 2018).

  Administrator changes

  Lourdes
  AngelOfSadnessBhadaniChris 73CorenFridayMidomMike V
† Lourdes has requested that her admin rights be temporarily removed, pending her return from travel.

  Guideline and policy news

  • The autoconfirmed article creation trial (ACTRIAL) is scheduled to end on 14 March 2018. The results of the research collected can be read on Meta Wiki.
  • Community ban discussions must now stay open for at least 24 hours prior to being closed.
  • A change to the administrator inactivity policy has been proposed. Under the proposal, if an administrator has not used their admin tools for a period of five years and is subsequently desysopped for inactivity, the administrator would have to file a new RfA in order to regain the tools.
  • A change to the banning policy has been proposed which would specify conditions under which a repeat sockmaster may be considered de facto banned, reducing the need to start a community ban discussion for these users.

  Technical news

  • CheckUsers are now able to view private data such as IP addresses from the edit filter log, e.g. when the filter prevents a user from creating an account. Previously, this information was unavailable to CheckUsers because access to it could not be logged.
  • The edit filter has a new feature contains_all that edit filter managers may use to check if one or more strings are all contained in another given string.

  Miscellaneous

  Obituaries

  • Bhadani (Gangadhar Bhadani) passed away on 8 February 2018. Bhadani joined Wikipedia in March 2005 and became an administrator in September 2005. While he was active, Bhadani was regarded as one of the most prolific Wikipedians from India.

Administrators' newsletter – April 2018

News and updates for administrators from the past month (March 2018).

  Administrator changes

  331dotCordless LarryClueBot NG
  Gogo DodoPb30SebastiankesselSeicerSoLando

  Guideline and policy news

  • Administrators who have been desysopped due to inactivity are now required to have performed at least one (logged) administrative action in the past 5 years in order to qualify for a resysop without going through a new RfA.
  • Editors who have been found to have engaged in sockpuppetry on at least two occasions after an initial indefinite block, for whatever reason, are now automatically considered banned by the community without the need to start a ban discussion.
  • The notability guideline for organizations and companies has been substantially rewritten following the closure of this request for comment. Among the changes, the guideline more clearly defines the sourcing requirements needed for organizations and companies to be considered notable.
  • The six-month autoconfirmed article creation trial (ACTRIAL) ended on 14 March 2018. The post-trial research report has been published. A request for comment is now underway to determine whether the restrictions from ACTRIAL should be implemented permanently.

  Technical news

  Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee is considering a change to the discretionary sanctions procedures which would require an editor to appeal a sanction to the community at WP:AE or WP:AN prior to appealing directly to the Arbitration Committee at WP:ARCA.

  Miscellaneous

  • A discussion has closed which concluded that administrators are not required to enable email, though many editors suggested doing so as a matter of best practice.
  • The Foundations' Anti-Harassment Tools team has released the Interaction Timeline. This shows a chronologic history for two users on pages where they have both made edits, which may be helpful in identifying sockpuppetry and investigating editing disputes.

Help with trolls

Hello JethroBT! I'm fairly new to Wikipedia and could use some help. I saw an invitation to the Tea House and decided to post here. I hope this is the right avenue to post this request, as I could use some help.

The page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maddox_(writer) is being vandalized by trolls, and is now semi-protected. Maddox cut ties with someone he used to do a podcast with 2 years ago named "Dick Masterson" when he learned Dick was hiding financial records, being unprofessional, etc.[1] Dick has become obsessed with Maddox and constantly harasses him and anyone associated with him on Facebook [2], Reddit [3] and Twitter [4]. As a result, Dick's fans take his lead and keep adding false and misleading information to this page. This harassment has resulted in a lawsuit: http://www.adweek.com/agencies/lawsuit-claims-copywriter-helped-wage-harassment/

Dick's fans coordinate attacks from Reddit and add misinformation here. They post their changes here and get rewarded with up-votes and shout-outs on Dick's podcast for spamming mentions of Dick here. For example, here's vandalism coordinated from his official subreddit[5], trolls are rewarded for edits [6], more trolls coordinating these edits from Reddit[7] and recognition when trolls successfully edit this wiki [8]

This Wiki now sounds like an advertisement for The Dick Show, with 3 links and 4 mentions of someone Maddox hasn't worked with in 2 years.

Could you help update the following changes, or please let me know who might be able to help? Proposed changes:

  • Delete: The line "Herrera also launched his own podcast called The Dick Show and gradually revealed that his friendship with Maddox had deteriorated by 2016" that's not a neutral point of view, is an opinion, and is not a work of Maddox's. It sounds like an advertisement.
  • Delete: The line 'Comedian Trevor Birt, also named in the suit, supported the fan backlash, saying "Maddox is one of the founding fathers of Internet comedy; in his heyday Maddox would embrace hate mail and feature it regularly on his site. Today's Maddox blocks and bans anyone that dares to question his genius"' This is an opinion and not a neutral point of view. Maddox does not "block anyone who questions his genius". There are countless critical views of him on his YouTube videos and on Facebook. Trevor Birt was listed as a defendant in the harassment suit and he impersonates Maddox as "Madcucks". He is not a comedian by his own admission.[9]
  • Delete/Update: Please remove any links to http://biggest.thedickshow.com or http://www.thedickshow.com because the official website for Maddox's old podcast is up and running at http://www.thebiggestproblemintheuniverse.com without any defamatory comments from third parties, and it does not include any advertisements for "The Dick Show" on it. It's the most neutral source. The mirror includes advertisements for "The Dick Show" with embedded soundcloud links to his show on every page with countless defamatory comments against Maddox.
  • Disputed: Dick is not a neutral point of view or reliable source because he has an ax to grind. The date of birth should be disputed because Dick regularly claims Maddox has autism, is a "cuck, cocksucker" etc. Example: Timestamp: 68:00 http://thedickshow.com/episode-85/
  • Edit: Over half of this article is devoted to the lawsuit. Suggested: the lawsuit should be trimmed down to one sentence with a link to a neutral source like Adweek[10]
  • Add: There's no mention of Maddox's recent work and collaborations with other notable figures with actual Wikipedia pages including Rucka Rucka Ali[11][12], his weekly podcast with Mikey Bolts[13], Internet Comment Etiquette, etc. For reference, Mikey Bolts is his audio engineer on Maddox's network: http://madcastmedia.com/shows/bestdebate/ and Maddox collaborated with Internet Comment Etiequette on a video recently[14]
  • Add: Maddox has a cameo role in the upcoming movie "Ride Share" (2018) [15] Maddox mentioned it on his podcast[16]
  • Add: Maddox has created a live weekly news show that he does every Friday on his YouTube channel.[17]

Thank you!
