Independent cities in Virginia edit

Thanks for pointing out the independent cities in the OmniRide article and about CUE being the city of Fairfax not Fairfax County in Metrorail (Washington, D.C.). As someone who spent fifteen years in Virginia, I understand and appreciate the effort you're putting in, because it's an important distinction, with cities NOT being part of their surrounding counties. Outside of Virginia, people don't seem to quite get it, and even in Virginia, a lot of people don't seem to understand it. So thanks for putting in the effort to keep Virginia's unique treatment of municipalities accurate. SchuminWeb (Talk) 23:33, 11 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Pre-1972 sound recordings edit

Have a source for February 15, 2067. I thought sound recordings were subject to the same rules as any other medium, in terms of copyright expiration. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 20:02, 13 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • Not sound recordings created before February 15 1972, the effective date of the Sound Recording Amendment of 1972. Before the Amendment, sound recordings were not considered copyrightable under federal law. Instead, sound recordings were subject to various state torts and statutes, some of which had no limit of duration. When the Amendment was enacted, Congress mandated that pre-1972 recordings would remain subject to state or common law copyright until February 15 2047. The Copyright Term Extension Act extended that date to 2067. See United States copyright law#Duration of copyright, especially the last paragraph, and sources in that section. — Dale Arnett (talk) 22:22, 13 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Napoli Basket.jpg) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Napoli Basket.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. Template:Culture of Oceania edit

Hi, The template name is broader than the template's subtitle, "Culture of Indigenous Oceania" but the template links to pages about indigenous culture. I can appreciate the enthusiasm of wanting to add the link to the Haka of the All Blacks to the template, because Rugby has been very successfully adopted by some indigenous people, and made more interesting by things like the All Blacks' haka. I don't think it is part of the Maori indigenous culture, though, do you?.

Previously, I had the haka link go to Haka (disambiguation) because that page shows not only a link to Haka of the All Blacks but also shows links to four other haka (indigenous dance) pages. I settled on the existing link to Haka because it includes a page-top link to the disambiguation page which shows all of the other hakas, and the Haka#See also section includes the Haka of the All Blacks. Don't you think that the Haka of the All Blacks is a stretch to include in a template on indigenous oceanian culture? Thank you for your thought and enthusiasm. Women's Football / Soccer Task Force News: August 2017

Should the women's football task force become WikiProject: WOSO?

According to an op-ed in the recent Signpost, some editors think task forces and subgroups are dying in 2017.

What do you think about forming our own WikiProject separate from WP:FOOTY? There's an on-going discussion of the potential pros and cons on the task force talk page. Input is welcome.

Recent developments

New initiatives have been created for:

  • FA WSL (England's top-division league)
  • NCAA (American university teams, conferences, etc.)
  • W-League (Australia's top-division league)
Ongoing tournaments
Current and upcoming seasons for top-division leagues
Did you know?

While WP:FPL lists only two women's top-division leagues as notable due to its "fully professional" criteria, did you know you can create an article on any player in any league as long as the references meet WP:GNG guidelines? Make sure to tag the new article talk page with: {{WP Women's sport|footy=yes}}.

Have some new articles in mind or see some that need improvement? Add them to the Open Tasks page if you'd like and other editors may be able to help. Need tips, assistance, or resources from other WOSO editors? Leave a message on the task force talk page.

Thank you for your continued contributions to articles related to women's football / soccer (WOSO)!

If you're interested in collaborating with others to make more links blue, take a look at the initiatives listed in the box below. Sign up at the bottom of an initiative page and help grow the lists, add potential references, resources, and create the articles ... or create your own initiative.

What a year to be alive. As usual (but perhaps even moreso since there have been unexpected quarantines), there has been a lot of activity on player, team, league and tournament-related Wikipedia articles with all of the worldwide coverage of women's football / soccer. Great work!

Fall Focus: FA WSL articles

You may have noticed lots of great things going on for the top English league this year: the FA WSL. More (international!) broadcasts, top international player signings, improved media coverage, and increased viewership. Let's keep the momentum brewing, shall we?

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Swimming articles with audio files edit

A tag has been placed on Category:Swimming articles with audio files requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Liz Read! Watt Powell Park edit

Is there anything of it left besides the light towers? Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 18:27, 13 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • I wasn't in a position to take a picture of it, but I believe remnants of the left-field wall were standing. You may want to try to find someone who's in the Charleston area who can confirm this. — Dale Arnett (talk) 18:30, 13 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Question edit

Are you italicizing "Thursday/Saturday/Sunday/Monday Night Football"? If you are, I request that you stop. thanks. NoseNuggets (talk) 10:58 PM US EST Dec 18 2008.

Thanks edit

For this fix. I made that template late last night and when I double-checked myself to see if the abbreviations were correct, I must have glanced over Kansas. -Jrcla2 (talk)(contribs) 19:01, 7 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

2008-09 Heineken Cup: Why is Edinburgh eliminated? edit

They can win ther last match with bonus point and get to 15 points, the same as Leicester and Bath, currently the best 2 teams in second place. So why are they marked in red?--Nitsansh (talk) 00:34, 17 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

  • I'm not the one who marked them in red. I'll look into their situation. — Dale Arnett (talk) 01:11, 17 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • My take on the situation: You are right that they can get to 15 points, and I've removed the red... at least for now. However:
    • If both Leicester and Bath pick up so much as a bonus point in their remaining matches, Edinburgh are out.
    • Also, Clermont and Sale will play in the last round. At least one of the teams will get to 15 points regardless of the result, and there's a very unlikely scenario where both will get to 15. Clermont can max out at 18, and Sale can max out at 16.
  • So, although Edinburgh aren't eliminated yet, their chances are on life support. — Dale Arnett (talk) 01:25, 17 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I looked back in history and it appears they were "eliminated" allready after the previous round of matches... I knew you were not responsible but thought you might know... I don't know the tie break rules for best runners-up so I thought there could be some reason... but since there's no possibility of head-to-head comparison it must be something like points-difference or number of ties, and therefor mathematically any team capable of getting into a tie for second place is still alive...

Also... I find it confusing that all teams in first place and the two best runners-up are marked in green and blue, even though currently only one team has secured a place in the quarterfinals... the common practice that I know of is to mark teams in various colours only if they secured qualification/elimination etc...--Nitsansh (talk) 02:20, 17 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Country 3-letter codes edit

Hi Dale

I've noticed that you have a habit of changing country codes from those used by sports organizations and various news agencies to codes used by I-have-no-idea-who... for example: SUI to CHE, GER to DEU, GRE to GRC etc... what's the problem... the templates yield the same results anyway...--Nitsansh (talk) 16:39, 21 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Tennis tie break scores format edit

What makes you state that "the normal format is to present the loser score only"... is it a rule of tennis?--Nitsansh (talk) 16:44, 21 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

  • It's not a rule... but at least in the States, every sports media outlet I've seen lists tiebreak scores with the loser's score only, because the winner's score can be implied. If the loser's score is 5 or less, the winner's score is ALWAYS 7. If the loser's score is 6 or more, the winner's score is 2 more than the loser's. — Dale Arnett (talk) 17:41, 21 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Well... the source which uses the format 7-6(7/5) rather than 7-6(5) is a rather credible one... the IOC website...--Nitsansh (talk) 03:10, 22 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
