Saxe-Lauenburg gained de jure sovereignty at the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire on 6 August 1806, but was de facto submitted to occupations, liberation, reoccupation, and annexation during the Napoleonic Wars in 1803, 1805, 1806 and 1807. In 1876 the Saxe-Lauenburgian Estates of the Realm and Duke William decided to give up Saxe-Lauenburg’s statehood. The duchy was thus merged as district Duchy of Lauenburg into the Prussian province of Schleswig-Holstein. In 1890, German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck was awarded the honorific title of Duke of Lauenberg, but he was never sovereign ruler of the territory.

  1. ^ According to different interpretations of when Duke John I and his brother Duke Albert II definitely split their commonly ruled Duchy of Saxony into Saxe-Lauenburg and Saxe-Wittenberg, either in 1269, 1272 or 1282, one can argue, that Agnes was a co-consort (if the definite split was in 1282 only) or not (if it happened before her marriage in 1273).
