Real IRA/New IRA RfC

Hello - there's currently an RfC taking place Talk:Real Irish Republican Army about creating a new page for the so-called 'New IRA'. This may be of interest and I would encourage everyone to give their view to generate some consensus. st170etalk 23:32, 27 December 2016 (UTC)

Popular pages report

We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject Northern Ireland/Archive 3/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject Northern Ireland.

We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:

  • The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
  • The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
  • The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).

We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject Northern Ireland, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at m:User talk:Community Tech bot.

Warm regards, the Community Tech Team 17:16, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

Reliable source? Template:Rayment, Rayment-hc, Rayment-bt, Rayment-pc etc

A discussion is taking place about whether a series of templates used to generate references to the work of Leigh Rayment fall within Wikipedia's content guideline to use reliable sources, or alternatively whether they should be deprecated and tagged with {{Self-published source}} and/or {{Better source}}.

These templates are used for referencing over 10,000 articles relating to the House of Commons of England, the House of Commons of Ireland, the House of Commons of England, the House of Commons of Great Britain, the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, and the peerages and baronetcies of the islands of Ireland and Great Britain.

Since whatever decision is made will effect so many articles, I am notifying the following WikiProjects of this discussion: WP:WikiProject England, WP:WikiProject Ireland, WikiProject Northern Ireland, WikiProject Scotland, WikiProject United Kingdom, and WikiProject Politics of the United Kingdom.

Your comments would be welcome, but please post them at WT:WikiProject Peerage and Baronetage#Leigh_Rayment.27s_Peerage_Pages_.282017.29, so that your contribution can be weighed as part of the discussion. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 17:17, 7 July 2017 (UTC)

Draft:Belfast Rapid Transport

Hello Northern Ireland experts. Here's a draft under development about an unfinished transportation project. It's in the news a lot because it keeps being delayed and causing traffic problems. Is it far enough along to have an article at this point?—Anne Delong (talk) 14:16, 13 July 2017 (UTC)

I'm not sure why you say it keeps being delayed ect. Here is an independent view - http://www.wesleyjohnston.com/roads/belfastrapidtransit.html Scroll down to the traffic light section showing green completed progress on the majority of the project. Please go ahead and publish. Gavin Lisburn (talk) 23:13, 28 September 2017 (UTC)
@Anne Delong:I just had a look prompted by that previous comment and I think the article is already good enough to go in Wikipedia rather than being kept as a draft. I think those people looking at draft submissions are being rather too nitpicky. Once an article is good enough like that it should be exposed to editing in general. Navigating Irish by-county categories

Please can you help fix a category navigation problem?

I have devised a way of making it easier to navigate between Irish by-county categories, both in Northern Ireland and in the Republic: Wikipedia:WikiProject Ireland/CatNavProposal

However, before rolling it out across ~2,500 category pages, I need to know:

  1. Is there a consensus to do this?
  2. Which options do you prefer?
  3. What about Northern Ireland?

See Wikipedia:WikiProject Ireland/CatNavProposal for an explanation of the problem and my proposed solution, and please leave your feedback at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ireland/CatNavProposal.

Your input would be very helpful. I think it will take about twenty minutes to assess the proposal. Thanks. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 19:47, 14 April 2018 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:50, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Local knowledge required

The article on Newry City A.F.C. says that the team is based in "Newry, County Down", but the article on their ground The Showgrounds (Newry) says that it is situated in "Newry, County Armagh". One of them is incorrect. Can anyone clarify this? Tigerboy1966  11:04, 23 November 2018 (UTC)

Well the Greenbank Industrial Estate is on the County Down side of the river, not the Armagh side. Everything else in the industrial estate has an address reading County Down. So I'd say it's in County Down. I can correct it. Canterbury Tail talk 16:42, 23 November 2018 (UTC)

Save the Northern Ireland Portal

Hi all.

We're looking for interested editors keen to collaborate on an effort to improve the Northern Ireland Portal and save it from possible / likely deletion. One of the most active members of the Portal Deletion Team has recently declared that she considers it [to have] narrow scope, thus implying it fails to meet the requirements of the Portal Guidelines (WP:POG). This is a rationale that has been extensively deployed, with great success, by the anti-Portal brigade in almost all Portal deletion discussions.

Please see here for some background discussion. So, if you still believe that a quality Portal is worthwhile, please confirm your interest at the aforementioned talkpage. --Cactus.man 17:55, 12 August 2019 (UTC)

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

The Great Britain/Ireland Destubathon

Hi. The Wikipedia:The Great Britain/Ireland Destubathon is planned for March 2020, a contest/editathon to eliminate as many stubs as possible from all 134 counties. Amazon vouchers/book prizes are planned for most articles destubbed from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland and Northern Ireland and whoever destubs articles from the most counties out of the 134. Sign up on page if interested in participating, hope this will prove to be good fun and productive, we have over 44,000 stubs! Even if "contests" aren't your thing, think of it as motivation to improve our content! Hope to see a lot of articles improved as part of this, there is a £50 prize for most Northern Ireland and Ireland articles destubbed!♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:22, 2 February 2020 (UTC)

Counties and current districts

Aghagallon has been edited several times recently to switch it between County Antrim and County Armagh. As far as I can see, traditionally it was in Antrim but for local government, it was in Craigavon now Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council which is largely Armagh. I'd be tempted to take out the county altogether but we do still have a variety of categories by county in Northern Ireland. Indeed, Aghagallon's only cats are Villages in County Antrim and Civil parishes of County Antrim. Any suggestions for how to treat such places? --Cavrdg (talk) 10:21, 22 April 2020 (UTC)

Nationality and politicians from Northern Ireland

There seems to be a dispute about the nationality of Edwin Poots with some feeling he should be described as British, Irish, Nothern Irish or nothing at all. This doesn't seem to be the only case of this happening and I was wondering what others thought the best solution is.

Wikipedia:Nationality of people from the United Kingdom suggests that using the subjects self-identification is the best course of action which for Poots and I assume most other DUP politicians would be British. CCI update

Hello! A case was recently closed at contributor copyright investigations which resulted in the content of multiple articles under this WikiProject being removed or modified. Most of the articles involved were related to Troubles, NI towns, monuments/natural history, and local history. Members of this project may want to assess how much was changed and if any articles were of high importance. Here are some additional notes about these changes:

  • This case hit a lot of articles, so it may be worth checking your watchlists for content. Some of the content may not be worth rewriting, but do not blankly restore the content. There is reasonable suspicion that almost all that was removed is either a copyright violation or that it is more likely to be one than not.

You can find more information on this CCI casepage. Thanks! Sennecaster (Chat) 12:36, 1 September 2021 (UTC)

Discussion on The Troubles in ... articles and criteria for placing an entry in the list

A discussion was opened over on WikiProject_Ireland talk, I wasn't aware of the Northern Ireland WikiProject and maybe this discussion was better opened here (apologies, new to editing).

However, the concern is that the inclusion of individual fatalities is being disputed which I believe threatens the integrity of the encyclopedia. Please take a look at: Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Ireland#'The_Troubles_in_...'_articles:_list_entry_criteria.

UPDATE: The following killings have been removed from the The Troubles in Rosslea article by User:FDW777. Can anyone give some feedback on what they see as the rationale for rigidly enforcing an arbitrary and ambigious list critera that excludes the below killings from the article, whilst the WP:CSC policy would readily include them - "Short, complete lists of every item that is verifiably a member of the group". Some feedback would be useful. Thanks 74 observer (talk) 20:27, 12 June 2021 (UTC)

  • 15 October 1979 - Herbert Kernaghan (36).[2] Member of the Ulster Defence Regiment (UDR). Killed by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) in front of several dozen school children whilst delivering vegetables to St Tierney's primary school Roslea. School staff were held at gun point while the IRA waited for Kernaghan to arrive.[3]
  • 8 July 1986 - John McVitty (46).[6] Member of the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC). Killed by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) in front of his young son whilst cutting rushes on a neighbour's farm. Had stopped his tractor to talk to his 12 year old son when two IRA men emerged from a ditch and shot him in the back. The two men escaped across the Monaghan border approximately 400 yards away.[7]
  • 29 October 1988 - Mary Rooney (81).[8] Died from a heart attack soon after evacuation from her home due to a Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) mortar attack on Roslea's Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) base. Four mortars were fired from a stolen tractor on a Saturday evening. According to an RUC spokesperson, "responsibility for this death must lie with the IRA terrorists who fired the mortars".[9]
  • 17 July 1994 - Caroline Moreland (34).[10] A mother of three from west Belfast disappeared by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) for 10 days and found shot in the head near Roslea. The IRA claimed she was an informer however the 10 days between disapperance and death led to questions about IRA torture to obtain admissions. For a number of years Caroline had been the vice-chairperson of the West Belfast Muscular Dystrophy Association.[11] Her killing was described by Cardinal Cathal Daly as "one particularly loathsome operation".[12] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74 observer (talkcontribs) 20:27, 12 June 2021 (UTC)

The people I've categorised as criminals were all clearly convicted and sentenced as such. I dont think they should be categorised differently from those in other places.Rathfelder (talk) 23:51, 20 December 2021 (UTC)

You are welcome to seek consensus to change the status quo then, instead of unilaterally ignoring it. As Talk:Bobby Sands#Category additions reverted again shows, the consensus still holds to this day. See also WP:ONUS. FDW777 (talk) 13:39, 21 December 2021 (UTC)
I also suggest you head over to the Nelson Mandela article and try adding Category:South African criminals to his article and see how long it lasts. Categorising people with politically motivated convictions as "criminals" is not neutral nor encyclopedic, and serves no navigation purpose the existing categories don't already achieve. FDW777 (talk) 13:44, 21 December 2021 (UTC)
  • I would still like advice on the question I posed. Rathfelder (talk) 18:09, 21 December 2021 (UTC)
  • Thank you. I'm not inclined to think of being a paramilitary as an occupation. These people presumably had some sort of job, though few of the articles mention it. Rathfelder (talk) 21:33, 24 December 2021 (UTC)
  • Their "day job", on the rare occasion they had them, would probably fail WP:CATDEF as not being a defining characteristic of the subject of the article. The article would almost always be about their paramilitary and/or political activity, not about them driving a taxi or serving pints (Gerry Adams). FDW777 (talk) 23:01, 28 December 2021 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Handling sectarian vandalism

An anonymous vandal has been targeting the Hilltown article for over a year, repeatedly changing instances of "Northern Ireland" to "north of Ireland" (the IP address is different each time, but I presume that it's the same person). Continually reverting their edits is wearisome and could constitute edit warring, so I thought I'd ask here if there was a better way of handling this situation. It'd be nice to see either the article semi-protected or the user blocked. Zacwill (talk) 00:51, 12 April 2022 (UTC)

Update: article has been semi-protected. Zacwill (talk) 19:03, 27 April 2022 (UTC)

Ardress House - National Trust paid pilot

Hello WikiProject Northern Ireland colleagues, I hope this post finds you well. I usually edit as a volunteer over at WikiProject Women in Red, but am working for the National Trust on a short paid pilot to assess and expand some of the content related to their sites here. Details of the project are here. One of the areas for expansion they have identified is for Ardress House in Annaghmore, which currently has a redirect to the Annaghmore, County Armagh page. In order to enable this to go through AfC, it has been suggested by other editors that I set up a draft and then ask the reviewer to delete the redirect when they (hopefully) accept the page. There's been similar discussion about a different site in Wales here. Please let me know if you have any concerns, very happy to post a draft here first for comment. Articles in relation to living persons - Troubles

Reading the Wikipedia policy in respect of living person biographies linked to "the Troubles" has there ever been a discussion whether articles in relation to people accused (but not convicted) of being members of proscribed organisations (IRA/UDA/UVF etc) should actually be published on the basis being a member or supporter of a proscribed organisation is a criminal offence? i.e. if Wikipedia says X is leader of Y that is essentially saying they are guilty of a criminal offence.

Should a caveat at least be added that they are suspected (or named and source provided) of being leader/member etc of Y but that they have not been convicted of membership (unless they have).

The majority of the people with articles would be arguably relatively unknown and would not court publicity except for tabloid articles that carefully skirt around directly accusing people of membership of proscribed organisation. Further, if Wikipedia are repeating claims - or indeed drawing inferences from tabloids and making assertions that are factual - that does not mean Wikipedia editors should have a carte blanche attitude to naming people, particularly for historical events and privacy concerns.

There certainly does seem to be some bias in articles, poor source references and generally questionable veracity to some claims in many articles.

Policy: A living person accused of a crime is presumed innocent until convicted by a court of law. Accusations, investigations and arrests do not amount to a conviction. For individuals who are not public figures; that is, individuals not covered by § Public figures, editors must seriously consider not including material—in any article—that suggests the person has committed, or is accused of having committed, a crime, unless a conviction has been secured.

If different judicial proceedings result in seemingly contradictory outcomes that do not overrule each other, include sufficient explanatory information. TheSquareMile (talk) 22:40, 13 August 2022 (UTC)

Cooltrain: seeking views

The Cooltrain article has longstanding queries about notability. It carries two references: one a raw map on a townlands.ie site, the other a history of Ballinamallard which doesn't mention Cooltrain. Searching on the Council site at www.fermanaghomagh.com finds no mention of Cooltrain. Any thoughts on whether Cooltrain meets WP:GEOLAND? AllyD (talk) 09:30, 24 August 2022 (UTC)

Draft:Ardress House

Hello all, I've been working on a pilot project for the National Trust and one of the pages we started is for Ardress House. It's waiting to be reviewed at AfC, and I hope will be accepted. In the meantime, I wondered if project members might be able to help with an image? I've been unable to track one down that's under a wiki-suitable license, and wondered if either a) an editor here was based nearby and might be able to take one, or b) anyone had better skills than me in tracking images down? Many thanks Lajmmoore (talk) 08:32, 6 September 2022 (UTC)

Lajmmoore: did you consider asking any of the Flickr photographers to release one of their images under a free licence? That sometimes works though can take quite a while, so try to fins an active person. ww2censor (talk) 11:18, 6 September 2022 (UTC)
Thanks @Ww2censor I've never tried that - will give it a go! Lajmmoore (talk) 12:06, 6 September 2022 (UTC)

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Women in Green's 5th Edit-a-thon

Hello WikiProject Northern Ireland:

WikiProject Women in Green is holding a month-long Good Article Edit-a-thon event in October 2023!

Running from October 1 to 31, 2023, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Around the World in 31 Days! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 31 countries (or broader international articles) by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.

We hope to see you there!

Generating Irish names for NI railway stations

Following a dispute at Belfast Grand Central station and their admission on my talk, @RooneyDonal21 has argued that Irish names should be generated for Northern Ireland railway stations after Irish was granted official status (excluding Ulster-Scots). I raise this as it could be interpreted as WP:OR as AFAIAA, Translink do not have Irish on their signs (yet)? Unless they have plans to do so? Plus WP:NCUKSTATIONS does mention focusing on the name on station signs if no sources are found or contradictory, but these generated translations appear on neither? (prove me wrong if incorrect) So should they stay? Mainly concerned over potential OR, but if there is consensus for the sake of Gaeilge, then that's fine. Go raibh maith agaibh DankJae 18:00, 10 December 2023 (UTC)

No Irish names, or any other language names, should be "generated". Irish names must be A) sourced and B) proven to be in use. Just having a name used in an Irish language newspaper, for instance, does not indicate use. The would need to find use in some kind of official capacity. Until such time as Irish translations are officially published and sourced they should not be used. We're not here to publish something someone made up one day, which is exactly what a generated or translated name is, which is WP:OR. I'm sure the Irish names will come officially in due time, but until then we should not be making any up. People have been historically blocked for making up Irish names and inserting them into articles, it's disruptive editing. Canterbury Tail talk 18:39, 10 December 2023 (UTC)
Ah WP:IMOS is what I need, I assume then, any additions of Irish names without a source by the editor should be reverted at least until a source is found? DankJae 18:55, 10 December 2023 (UTC)
By any editor yes. Translations must be used and sourced, that's really all it is. Otherwise it's WP:OR and yes against WP:IMOS. Canterbury Tail talk 19:27, 10 December 2023 (UTC)

Celtic Knot Conference Returns September 2024 in Waterford

Hello Everyone! Dia Duit!

We are very happy to announce that the Celtic Knot Conference will be back for its 7th edition in the new year! We are delighted that it will be hosted in Waterford City, Ireland, in September 2024. The exact date will be announced as soon as possible.

The Celtic Knot is a conference dedicated to minoritized languages on the Wikimedia projects, including Irish. Getting back to its roots, in the Celtic languages and nations, the event gathers people from communities and languages that are underrepresented on the Wikimedia projects. It is a place where people working on growing and maintaining their communities can meet, learn from each other, and support each other on topics like community growth, technical tools, or collaboration with partners.

Celtic Knot 2024, will be an in-person event, held in Waterford, Ireland's oldest city which has an abundance of cultural heritage and history. We are currently exploring options to make conference resources (talks, panels, etc.) available to those who are unable to attend in person.

We are currently gathering input from the community to build a conference tailored to your needs: whether you attended a previous edition of the Celtic Knot or not, if you are involved in underrepresented languages on the Wikimedia Projects, please take a few minutes to fill in the community survey, and make sure to share the information with your local group. The survey is open until January 21st. Many thanks in advance!

As we are starting to build the concept and the program, we will regularly improve the existing event pages on Meta and post updates on the talk page of the event.

The core organizing team is composed of Amy O’Riordan (WCI), Sophie Fitzpatrick (WCI), Daria Cybulska (WMUK), Richard Nevell (WMUK), supported by Léa Lacroix (community engagement consultant). If you have ideas or suggestions, if you would like to get involved in the conference, feel free to contact any of us.

We’re looking forward to seeing you at the Celtic Knot!
