Political Colours

"Northen Irish" vs "Northern Ireland" vs "from Northern Ireland"

A question came up at Wikipedia:Peer review/James Nesbitt/archive2 about whether a person should be referred to "a Northern Irish [person]" in the lead. My own personal choice is to adopt whatever description the subject of the article gives to themself and reserve "from Northern Ireland" for articles where it isn't clear whether the person considers themself Northern Irish, Irish or British. However, I have seen some sources (books, newspapers, etc) refer to people as "a Northern Ireland [person]". Does this Wikiproject have a clear line on this matter or is it as hazy as it is offline? :-) Thanks. Bradley0110 (talk) 15:03, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

I believe "from Northern Ireland]] to be best. Northern Irish isn't really a nationality, and putting in British or Irish is usually putting an opinion on it except where there is a definitive source for it (which is very rare actually.) Canterbury Tail talk 15:40, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

I'm currently expanding the article on List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the United Kingdom and am pondering what should be used as the lead image(s). It's not the most important issue in developing the article, but I thought that as the list includes Northern Ireland that editors here may be interested (Northern Ireland's sole WHS is Giant's Causeway although Mount Stewart has been proposed). I've left a note at the England and Scotland wikiprojects and the Welsh wikipedians' noticeboard to see if the discussion goes anywhere. Please leave any comments on the article talk page. WP:MEMORIAL and victims of Troubles atrocities

Any input to this discussion would be helpful. There appears to be an inconsistency in that the names of victims of some atrocities are being removed form articles under the guise of WP:MEMORIAL, but not others. NI articles missing geographical coordinates

370 articles about geographically locatable subjects in Northern Ireland are missing geographical coordinates. Finding the latitude and longitude of locations, and entering coordinates into articles is straightforwards, and explained at Wikipedia:How to add geocodes to articles. Having coordinates on articles using the {{coord}} template provides a link to the article's subject on a wide range of maps, and that links to the articles are provided in GoogleMaps, MultiMap and other such places which use wikipedia data. A breakdown of articles needing coordinates by region and in some cases local authority area is found at Category talk:Northern Ireland articles missing geocoordinate data. Succession of Assembly seats

Info box on NI towns - revert to previous info box/new UK and Ireland one?

There is discussion taking place at {{infobox UK place}} concerning a "distance to Dublin" field that was added last year to that template. While "distance to Dublin" is quite a silly issue, it has brought to a head some questions around that template. Some participants have suggested that a single Ireland template would be more suitable for towns in Northern Ireland.

As a backgrounder, settlements on the island of Ireland originally had a single infobox ({{Infobox Irish Place}}). The UK info box was developed in 2007 and began replacing the Irish place names info box on articles in mid 2007. Issues were raised then concerning the template. Specifically its visual appearance, over complexity and redundancy on some issues with respect to towns in Northern Ireland. It has also been criticised for focusing too greatly on local/national government administration and services to the detriment of other more "humane" issues.

Is there support to revert to the original template for Northern Ireland articles? In my opinion it better serves the needs of articles the towns in question. For a comparison see: Strabane and Letterkenny for example.

(The template still contains the relevent Northern Ireland specific fields.)

Another suggestion which has been made is to have a single UK and Ireland info box (which I also support, if there was substantial reworking of the current UK one). --rannṗáirtí anaiṫnid (coṁrá) 13:18, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

I must admit that I've always preferred the look of the UK box, but that's just personal aesthetic preference. I think perhaps one of the main reasons is that it encourages the inclusion of an image of the settlement, though I also think the maps are more helpful. In any case, if the two were to be merged (which I do think is a good idea), it should be just that, a merger, not one supplanting the other. There would be many difficulties (the population field comes to mind, where the Irish census has populations for environs, but the UK census has statistical areas that are pretty much unintelligible and often exclude parts of what most of us would consider the town, whilst including other locations that are outside), but with a bit of work we should be able to overcome those difficulties. Ran through a list of the changes necessary to do to have a single infobox. I take Skinsmoke's comments on board but I think now it would be effectively very little. An agree look and feel, I think, would be more of a sticking point. Someone commented on the UK infbox talk about having a nice feel like on the French wiki (compare fr:Strabane and fr:Letterkenny). Strabane

Just a heads up, we seem to be having an IP effort to remove the town of Strabane from Northern Ireland and remove detail from the lead. It seems some editors have decided to continually remove references to the country the town is in from the article lead, and replace them all with just north-west Ireland (as in the island.) I suggest root of the problem lies in the choice of the word "country" in the infobox, which may be suitable for ENG/SCO/WAL but not for NI.

Strabane is verifiably in Ireland. Indeed, reliable sources will even inform you that it is in the country of Ireland. --RA (talk) 08:19, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons

The WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons (UBLPs) aims to reduce the number of unreferenced biographical articles to under 30,000 by June 1, primarily by enabling WikiProjects to easily identify UBLP articles in their project's scope. There were over 52,000 unreferenced BLPs in January 2010 and this has been reduced to 32,665 as of May 16. A bot is now running daily to compile a list of all articles that are in both Category:All unreferenced BLPs and have been tagged by a WikiProject. Note that the bot does NOT place unreferenced tags or assign articles to projects - this has been done by others previously - it just compiles a list.

Your Project's list can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Northern Ireland/Unreferenced BLPs. As of May 17 you have approximately 55 articles to be referenced, a 1.8% reduction from last week. Councils vs Places

UK Local Authorities are inherently notable. Yet many council names are currently redirects to articles about places; which are not the same thing at all. I feel we should do the same for all authorities which don't at the moment have their own articles. For example, I recently split Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council out from Metropolitan Borough of Walsall. I've recently rewritten and upgraded the entire Larne gun-running article which had failed many Wiki guidelines and would like someone to independantly assess and class the article please. How to list buildings in Northern Ireland?

I am working on a series of lists of Grade A listed buildings in Northern Ireland, which will stand alongside similar lists for England and Wales and ongoing work for Scotland (example). I have pulled the data off the NIEA "Northern Ireland Buildings Database" [1] and compiled some draft lists, see here. The Database lists buildings by local authority, and usually gives the County. However, Wikipedia pages are categorised by County; the parent category for these lists would be Category:Buildings and structures in Northern Ireland, which is subdivided principally by County. Listing by local authority would result in a large number of very short lists (<5 entries in many cases), and potential local government reorganisation would make lists on that basis obsolete. The other option is one big list, but with around 200 entries it would be almost unmanageable.

Assuming then that Counties are the best subdivision, what to do with Belfast? I understand that the majority of Belfast is in County Antrim, but some is in County Down. Going down to the level of individual buildings, where does one draw the line between the two counties? Is it the River Lagan? Or, should Belfast be an exception, and have its own separate list based on the Belfast City Council boundary? The draft "Belfast" list is here. Merging Belfast wards into one article

I've just been looking at Category:Electoral wards of Belfast and most of the relevant articles seem destined to remain permastubs. Unlike in other places, say Great Britain for example where wards are electoral units in their own right, Northern Ireland wards themselves aren't used for anything other than the census. Some of the wards themselves don't really exist as areas in their own right - no one from Belfast really speaks about the "Castleview" or "Shaftesbury" areas for example, those wards being collections of smaller areas, so its difficult to see what can be written about them. Some of them seem doomed to go no further than "X is a ward in Belfast."

Conversely there are already articles about locations like Ardoyne, so it seems pointless writing a seperate article about the ward. This also applies to situations like Falls, Belfast or Shankill, Belfast which currently redirect to articles about the areas, even though the wards only contain a small portion of those areas.

The articles were all created in good faith but the original creator Tsumo9 hasn't edited since 2007. In the meantime, many articles are often targets for vandalism which can go unnoticed for months.

Many of the wards will in any event be replaced next year, further reducing the scope for expansion.

Given all this, I'd propose to merge them all together into a new Electoral wards of Belfast article. Defunct wards could be included in this or have their own article. Where areas are notable in their own right, say Andersonstown or Cherryvalley they can retain their own articles. This would allow clarification that Victoria is not a ward but a collection of wards. (Victoria, Belfast and the other district electoral areas could redirect to that.) This would allow data about the wards to be grouped together in one place allowing for easier comparison. Census data could be added as appropriate. A rough example is in my sandbox. I'd appreciate comments on this. Valenciano (talk) 20:53, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

• Agree - Wards are also used for local council elections here like in the rest of the UK, for example Magherafelt District for example is divided into three regions which each contain several electoral wards - however their actual use/purpose is very vague. Wards i think should be included in the relevant local district council article etc. for posterity and any significance noted there unless they do desire their own article. Wards in NI actually have no use or purpose. The only reason they exist is because in the early 70s when the current 26 councils were created they were intially supposed to elect councillors by first past the post and so single member wards were created with that in mind - one ward electing one councillor. However after the suspension of Stormont the UK government then decided to reintroduce single transferable vote. Rather than go through the whole process of creating new multi-member wards from scratch, they decided to use the existing wards as building blocks. That was understandable then but made no sense in 1982-1984 or 1991-1992 when they updated the ward boundaries even though the wards had no function any more. In Belfast terms, the census output areas provide all the demographic info necessary and have the advantage of usually being based on smaller, natural communities, while district electoral areas are the units for local councils. Belfast has 51 wards (soon to be 60) whereas Birmingham with four times the population only has 40. This is another reason for merging them - too many of them and a nightmare to watchlist them all. I've redirected the bulk of the articles to the new article. There are a few loose ends to tie up which I'm not sure where to go with. The template for the wards now seems a bit pointless and the category itself is questionable: areas of Belfast would be a better one now. Good work on the article. I think it would be best just to delete the category and the template. The question now is how to deal with the other non-notable stubs about wards, housing estates and/or inner-city areas of NI. I found 54 of them and I've tagged 49 for notability, as you can see in my edit history. About 35 of them are electoral wards and have been added to Category:Wards of Northern Ireland.

Proposed reform of local government in Northern Ireland cancelled, articles redundant

With the review being shelved, all articles in the Category:Proposed districts of Northern Ireland are now redundant. Troubles in ....... Articles

I wonder if there is a need for quite so many articles giving details of The Troubles in..... in such small areas – I saw a figure of 97 such pages somewhere. Perhaps these could be merged together, for example into current council areas - 26 in total - counties – 6- or maybe a new division into areas somewhere between these sizes – eg East Tyone, South Armagh, North Armagh. As it is, Troubles in.... articles already apply to wider areas than they claim to in their titles, as the lists of deaths have been found by searching for the placenames, eg Dungannon, in each year of the Sutton register, and this results in the inclusion of incidents listed “near” Dungannon (surely quite a subjective label) , including those quite some distance away (I saw some that were 3-5 miles off the town with which they were linked

I think a summary of all the deaths noted in the Sutton register should be included – it seems to be an easy way to prevent any accusations of bias by omission being levelled at any of the articles.

In the previous discussion, it is argued that a “multiple fatalities only” rule results in Republicans being shown in a bad light. I appear to have independently formed an opposing opinion, as I saw the “Troubles in Coalisland” article only mentioned the killing of 6 (out of 7) IRA members by the British Army, failing to mention any of the 11 murders by the IRA in the area. After adding a summary of all of these on the page, I noticed something similar in the Dungannon page - see Discussion there for all my stats – and, alarmingly, only 18% of Protestant deaths are mentioned, whereas 86% of Catholic deaths are. This is in total 44 killings – similar number to those in Portadown and therefore arguably a similar reliability of these statistics. I know that this argument could continue with each of the 97 other areas, but I would rather it didn't – it took quite enough time to get those statistics for two towns!

My point is that a combination of small areas (resulting in a smaller field of data in each article), and the filtering of this data to an arbitrary threshold create articles which give the wrong impression of the conflict, with bias possible in either direction.

I tthink merging needs to take place here. “The Troubles in Tyrone” could include summary statistics, before a list of incidents, arranged by location., eg Incidents in Coalisland, Incidents in Dungannon – as to maintain some degree of local detail, and so that these sections can be accessed by links from their respective town articles. I'm sorry that this discussion must be started again, but I believe a change is needed here, and that a certain degree of work is needed on these pages. Agree. I honestly don't see the value in articles like The Troubles in Kesh and The Troubles in Keady, it violates the spirit of WP:ONEEVENT if not the letter. British Isles Meitheal

Hi all —

A while back the British Isles article underwent a peer review. Most of the suggestions coming out of it have been implemented and IMO the article is approaching GA standard. This is an article that had been dogged by POV issues and in-fighting amongst its editors so the achievement of getting it to the standard it is in admirable for all involved. However, one major sticking point is referencing, which are appallingly sparse. There is no way the article could achieve GA as it stands on account of the state of referencing.

The task of fixing it up isn't impossible. There are about 30 paragraphs that need referencing. With enough editors, we would only need to take two or thee paragraphs each to get the job done. To that end, I've set up a "meitheal" page. The idea is for anyone who is willing to help out to take a paragraph at a time and to references just that paragraph. If you can do more than one then great. Just come back and take another one.

Fermanagh Ireland pioneers in Gold Country, California

A graveyard on a hillside at the edge of Chinese Camp california contains at least two stones memorializing former citizens of County Fermanagh, Ireland.

In gold-rush and western pioneer history, people often left families and friends far away as they headed off to make their fortunes. When they died from the extreme hardships of travel in the 1800's, or succumbed to disease, natives, outlaws, falling off a mountain or other myriad cause, folks back home certainly never got a phone call, and probably never knew of the fates of these intrepid travelers.

One marker lists at least 3 names, all of whom appear to be from the Slane family. Other details are difficult to read, but someone with even basic graphic skills could make out more. This pic is available for this page, but this editor is unaware how.

Pioneers in more primitive times were bold enough to cross seas and continents to seek a better life: why did they do it, and how, and how did they fare? This occasionally left both ends of the family tree pruned, so that one's ancestors' provenance could be in dispute. Are we from Wales or Ireland? Either way, the pioneering spirit is strong in the Celtic, and should be well celebrated.

Railway station coordinates

Photos of murals not allowed on Commons

Seemingly, due to some ridiculous copyright rule, photos of murals arn't allowed on the Commons. The Commons has almost 300 photos of Northern Ireland's famous murals and they appear on many Wikipedia articles. I think it would be a real loss for Wikipedia if theze wer' to be deleted.

If you can find murals where the painter(s) have been dead for 70 years, then we won't be infringing their copyright at least in most places. Dead for 100 years in almost all places. While there may be copyright in the photo of a mural, the copyright that we'd be infringing is that of the original artist(s). Roman Empire murals and mosaics are just fine, copyright has expired. --Bejnar (talk) 19:58, 4 October 2012 (UTC)

I believe most of Northern Ireland's murals fall under graffiti and so are alllowed; this would definitely be the case with most 1970s and 1980s murals when they largely consisted of Union Jacks, paramilitary initials or a hastily-scrawled "Brits Out". As for later murals when they improved in execution (pun not intended) and quality, who exactly would own the copyright? The leaders of the paramilitary organisation of which the respective mural is representing or the actual artists who normally paint under the direction of some tattooed shaven-headed head buck cat who stands below barking orders?--Jeanne Boleyn (talk) 11:45, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

As no articles have links to the "Rose Report" (was that the colonial one of 1850 or the 1969 Rose Report on Colour and Citizenship?), is it really of enough importance to be listed in the banner template under tasks: History:, as an article in the need of creation? Twice the article has been created and twice it has been deleted.

The other Rose Reports, such as those dealing with education have more presence on Wikipedia and the web:

Even "The Rose Report" segment on Mancow's Morning Madhouse has more presence on Wikipedia. Then there is the "Welch-Rose Report" of 1915 dealing with public health. If you folks are serious about a Rose report article, might I suggest (1) a temporary location as a sub-page of this project until a decent page could be whipped into shape and (2) some time spent in paper-based libraries to find accurate citations to reliable sources, since there don't seem to be any such web-based ones. Meanwhile, you could answer these questions: Who commissioned the report? Who was the author? What year was it issued? The Template:Northern Ireland tasks lists under History, articles needed for History of Armagh, History of Newry, and History of Lisburn. Now there is for each of those places a separate article on The Troubles: The Troubles in Armagh, The Troubles in Newry and The Troubles in Lisburn. And each of the articles at Armagh, Newry and Lisburn have a History section that covers the time before The Troubles. Given the above, I propose to remove the three requested articles from the template. Of course the three history sections could all use expansion, but they all have the basics down. after this discussion, the proposed districts of NI articles were redirected. however, these redirects were recently reverted (see, for example, Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Proposed districts of Northern Ireland). The revert is fine. This section gives the background: the review was scrapped in mid 2010. At that point in time, there was agreement that keeping articles about a cancelled process was pointless and they were redirected. In June 2012, the decision to scrap the review was reversed, so the districts will most likely come into effect in April 2015... if it's scrapped again we can always restore the redirects, but for now the articles would need to be updated. Assessments

Are any of your members actively assessing NI articles these days? James Nesbitt has recently been downgraded but as I'm not active in your project so it would be better if one of you did a reassessment. I do tag articles with your banner when I come across them but I only provide a class rating not an importance rating because my focus is on the Ireland Project assessments as a whole and not on WPNI. I notice that this anonIP, whose deletion notices are posted above, has tagged some files for your project, as he has for some other projects even those that don't assess images, when file assessment does not appear to be an important issue for this project. Only 12 file pages, out of nearly 7,000 pages, have been templated in the last 4 years when project assessments have been ongoing since 2006 and 6 of those were within the last few days. Tagging files will alert ArticleAlertsBot that files fall under your project, and will be listed in the alerts autolisting when they come up for deletion under WP:FfD. It will not, however, list files coming up for deletion under other processes (such as WP:PUF, or WP:CSD); and no bot autolists to deletion sorting lists for files. Tagging files also does not mean assessment, since for most projects, files are classed as "file" and the importance assessment is not done. True, and what I'm saying is that tagging files with the banner is not the same as assessing files for the project. Assessment (usually, especially in edit comments) means rating the file for importance, while tagging the file does not require assessment (does not require |importance= being set), WP:BANNERMETA treats File:/Category:/Template:/WP: pages as not needing importance assessment, and will auto-set file/category/template/project class rating, usually -- 76.65.128.222 (talk) 01:26, 23 July 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, I know what you are saying but I have been around assessments and project banners long enough to know what they do and don't do, what is useful and what is not. However, placing project banners without ratings causes unassessed items to appear in the project's assessment tables where about 25% of all items are unassessed making, in my opinion, the assessment table less than useful. ww2censor (talk) 13:03, 23 July 2013 (UTC)

Please help get Northern Ireland ready for the start of the Wiki Loves Monuments competition on 1st September

This September the UK is taking part for the first time in the international photography competition Wiki Loves Monuments. Participants will be invited to submit pictures of listed buildings of significant importance (grades A or grade B+), as recorded by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency. The main external website for competitors can be found here, and you can leave a message there if you have queries about competing. Do please join in, and let people in your local area know of this excellent way in which both existing and new Wiki users can help improve the encyclopaedia by contributing photographs of local listed structures. What about organizing a local Wikimeet to attract new people?

In preparation for the start of the competition on 1st September there is still quite a lot of work to do, and we would like to ask for the help of members of this wikiproject. Your local and expert knowledge will be invaluable in ensuring that the lists of eligible buildings are up to date and correctly formatted. If you look at Listed buildings in the United Kingdom you will see how many structures are included. If you then follow the link to Listed buildings in Northern Ireland, you can get to the detailed lists for your area. Alternatively have a look at the WLM planning table. Can you help to ensure that the lists for your area are up to date and well presented?

Some of the lists have been semi-automatically generated from data provided by NIEA. These use pre formatted templates (eg NIEA header) which will make it much easier for competition participants to upload their photographs to Commons as an automated process. Please don't change the template structure, as we need to ensure that the templates are properly compatible with the WLM standards that are in use worldwide. The format will allow a bot automatically to collect the information and to put it into the international Monuments Database.

The data still needs the attention of local editors:

• The "title" may need wikilinking to a suitable article name (whether we currently have that article or not). If there are several buildings in one street all of the wikilinks point at an article about the street; however each entry has a separate line in the list.
• The "location" column looks and sorts better if just the parish or town is included (& wikilinked).
• The "date completed" column sometimes has eg "C19" for 19th century, and "C1850" for c. 1850 when the date is uncertain - these need to be corrected manually.
• The "grid ref & lat & long" (which is occasionally missing) may be given to 8 characters — only 6 (grid ref) or 5 (lat & long) are really needed.
• Clicking on the "list entry number" should take you to the data sheet for that entry on the NIEA database which can be checked if needed for details.
• The image column should have a picture added if we already have a suitable image on Commons. (N.B. if you are going to be taking photos yourself for inclusion in the competition don't upload them until September)
• References may be added according to normal WP practice.

Historic county for Clady

Hi folks, I've been wandering around various articles but am not finding an answer that might resolve a link. There is a large-ish quote from a primary source at the Co. Londonderry article but it baffles me. Was Clady, County Londonderry ever in County Antrim or is there another place called Clady that was thus? - Sitush (talk) 13:42, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

Argh, there is always a fly in the ointment. Thanks for the info but I should have mentioned to which article this query related. It is Robert Caldwell, who was born quite some time ago. GA article being reassessed: Belfast

Belfast was reviewed and listed as a Good Article in March 2007, and last reassessed in Sept 2007. It has been tagged with sourcing concerns since August 2008. I have done a GAR, and I feel that the article doesn't meet current GA criteria. The main contributors have been notified, though are unavailable or not able to do the work at the moment, and there has been no progress. Following the guidelines at Wikipedia:Good article reassessment, interested WikiProjects are being contacted as editing assistance may be needed to prevent the article being delisted. It seems odd to remove the names of politicians, and I'm not sure those sentences make sense without them. The sentence "This statement would lead, eventually, to the repeal of the Government of Ireland Act 1920", which was removed, could do with a reference (off the top of my head, I'm not sure whether it's correct or not). Problematic "The Troubles in Location x" articles

Wikipedia:WikiProject_Northern_Ireland#The_Troubles_in_location_x policy appears unenforced, for example [The Troubles in Belcoo] has everything dumped from the CAIN database, I assume it was retyped manually since the reason I was in that page to begin with was to correct a name that was misspelled. (I assume someone had good intentions to try to memorialize all the dead, but Wikipedia is an *extremely* poor place to put a memorial, as (a) its accuracy is a crapshoot (and it's not very respectful to the dead to misspell their names), (b) it's subject to vandalism, and (c) even if we fixed it here in Wikipedia, the info might be deleted eventually anyway as it doesn't meet Wikipedia inclusion standards; it would be better to vet and fix the info somewhere where the information can have a long-term home.)

1. The current policy on this page says to include if there are 2 or more deaths in an incident; it seems to me that by Wikipedia policy, it can't be included if there's no source with WP:WEIGHT, regardless of # of deaths.

2. Does someone want to move the info to another wiki or host it themselves? It seems to me good that these pages exist (The CAIN database has the same info, but not in an accessible format), just not on Wikipedia.

3. If nobody cares enough to move the info, most of it is probably going to end up deleted, per Wikipedia policy. (If nobody volunteers to vet it for errors, I'm probably going to end up deleting weakly sourced material myself.)

Auto-assessment of article classes

Following a recent discussion at WP:VPR, there is consensus for an opt-in bot task that automatically assesses the class of articles based on classes listed for other project templates on the same page. In other words, if WikiProject A has evaluated an article to be C-class and WikiProject B hasn't evaluated the article at all, such a bot task would automatically evaluate the article as C-class for WikiProject B.

Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge

Hi there. I've started a new initiative, the Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. It's a long term goal to bring about 10,000 article improvements to the UK and Ireland. Through two contests involving just six or seven weeks of editing so far we've produced over 1500 improvements. Long term if we have more people chipping it and adding articles they've edited independently as well from all areas of the UK then reaching that target is all possible. I think it would be an amazing achievement to see 10,000 article improvements by editors chipping in with whatever area of the British Isles or subject that they work on.
