Wikipedia:WikiProject Ireland

WikiProject Ireland is a WikiProject dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to the island of Ireland. This page and its subpages contain their ideas; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. If you would like to help, please inquire on the talk page and see the to-do list there.

For more information on WikiProjects, please see Wikipedia:WikiProjects and Wikipedia:WikiProject best practices.

This project has been created in an attempt to:

  • Improve existing articles relating to Ireland,
  • Create needed articles relating to Ireland, and
  • Provide information in standardised format so that there is consistency for articles on places in, or related to Ireland.

Articles and categories relating to Ireland are extensive and work needs to be/is being done across a multitude of areas. In order to gain the benefits of collaboration, please update this page with any relevant "to do’s.

Major pending tasksEdit

To doEdit

To doEdit

Article alerts are available, updated by AAlertBot. More information...
  • The main Dublin article needs to achieve featured status.
  • Every locality needs at least a 500-character stub article, built on top of its framework article.
  • All areas of historic importance need substantial articles.
  • The article on the Mahon Tribunal needs to be tidied up, verified, and fact-checked.
  • Irish language words and phrases should be marked up using {{lang}}, thus: {{lang-ga|Páirc na hÉireann}}.

Articles that have been tagged with templatesEdit

To list individual Ireland related articles need images fill in the "image-needed" parameter in the project tag {{WikiProject Ireland}} on the article talk page and it will be listed here

Tagged with WPIE templateEdit

For a complete list of the progress in tagging Irish related articles with the project template, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Ireland/Assessment and their current statistics.
Since July 2007, when 1,044 articles were tagged and many were unassessed or unclassified, much work was been done and by 19 March, 2008, 12,705 articles were tagged with none being unassessed and around 1,000 being unclassified, most being stubs. By mid-2008, over 20,000 pages had been tagged. As of the end of November 2017 a total of almost 60,000 project banners existed, of which less then 3,000 were for articles better than Start and Stub-class, which between them accounted for 34,000 pages, while category-class and template-class pages amounted to almost 20,000. By January 2022 we had reached over 90,000 pages tagged, with just 3,500 stubs left to be priority-rated. Much work can still be done to improve the Start and Stub-class articles and increase the number of higher quality articles, including securing more GA and FA pages.

Request PhotoEdit

In order to create a gallery from which Wikipedians can source pictures of Ireland for use in articles, upload to Wikimedia Commons and please list freely-licensed pictures here.

If you require pictures, please add {{Image requested}} with the appropriate county parameter to the talk page of the article. This will add the article to the correct category under Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Ireland

If you would like to help with sourcing pictures please check out the sub-categories of Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Ireland

Wikipedia:WikiProject Ireland/Assessment - the assessment department

  • Completed 30 Sept. 2022 - assessment of all articles tagged to the Project. Well done to all, it's been a long road (more than 1.5 decades...). Now we can refine at leisure. SeoR (talk) 19:55, 30 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Projects and tasksEdit

To Do List:

  1. Invite new members, by contacting editors who have made substantial Ireland-related edits in the past
  2. Fix templates to talk pages
  3. Construct Article Classification by following the category 'tree'
  4. Assess articles at Article Classification
  5. Compile a list of missing articles and catalogue them by status - see Wikipedia:WikiProject Ireland/Missing articles

Adopt an articleEdit

Similar to the Collaboration of the week, but on a smaller scale, you might want to "adopt" an article. This would involve doing the research, writing, and picture-taking (if possible) for either a non-existent article or a stub. Of course, everyone else can still edit an adopted article, and you can work on other things too, but the idea is to find a focus for a while, to try and build up the number of quality articles the Project has produced.

Check Wikipedia:WikiProject Melbourne#Adopt an article to see how this section is used.
