Bot request
Sorry, my time is very limited now so I won't be able to help. I'm curious though, what's the goal? ~ Tom.Reding (talk ⋅dgaf) 11:58, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Tom.Reding: Hi, thanks for the response. The end goal is to create an automated/unsupervised bot for mrwiki. If only I could get this following code converted in C#, I think I can handle the rest. There are sample codes in PHP, and python as well, and API details at mediawiki:API:Edit. Could you please do that? If I can get only that code converted to C#, then I can do the rest. Also pinging Primefac, Novem Linguae, and SD0001. —usernamekiran • sign the guestbook • (talk) 18:32, 9 February 2022 (UTC)

- Hey Kiran. Sorry, I don't know C# well enough to translate this. Before you go to the trouble, did you get a hello world program working with C# and Toolforge? If not, I think switching to a more common Toolforge language (e.g. Python & pywikibot) might be worth thinking about. It would make it easier to get help from bot operators. –Novem Linguae (talk) 18:48, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
I got the code successfully ported from java to C#, but it is still not working. There is no point in consuming mine, and others' time on this. I will get back to this after 7-8 months from now. Thanks everybody for their input. —usernamekiran • sign the guestbook • (talk) 17:17, 11 February 2022 (UTC)

I have used "Jet Propulsion Laboratory" for Johnpacklambert in the past, people abbreviate Johnpacklambert as JPL a lot. Recent page moved
Hi, according to this move discussion, the pages should have been moved according to option 2, not option 1. Nehme1499 10:02, 26 May 2022 (UTC)
Please don't...
- Close deletion discussions because the pages had been vandalised and the nominator had not noticed prior to the nomination
- Even more specifically, don't do no. 1 if the nominator noticed after the nomination and left a comment which specifically addressed why they think the AfD is still valid
- Speedy keep articles which do not meet the criteria for doing so
- Leave your own personal opinion about the nomination in the closing statement, as this can be seen (and often is) as a WP:SUPERVOTE, which is not what people closing discussions should be doing. In such a case, it is almost universally better to leave a comment in the discussion instead of closing it.
Thanks, RandomCanadian (talk / contribs) 19:26, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
- @RandomCanadian: Hello. Proper closing statement doesnt mean supervote, there is a big difference. My close was justified, I am not asking for reinstating it though. Also see: WP:SK#NOT, and WP:SNOW. —usernamekiran (talk) 19:38, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
- Mentioning
Also, according to WP:GEOLAND, legally recognised census places are notable, regardless their population. The pre-hijacked article fulfils the requirements with reliable source.
is not a closing statement. It is a !vote which should be in the discussion (and one which is effectively countered by the fact that notability actually requires verifiable evidence). This was also certainly not eligible for WP:SNOW - nobody beyond the nominator had even commented on it. RandomCanadian (talk / contribs) 19:45, 2 June 2022 (UTC)- @RandomCanadian: erm... You are being kind of bureaucratic here, as well as self contradictory. While reverting the close, you said
WP:GEOLAND is countered by both WP:NRVE and WP:5P5
The latter statesWikipedia has policies and guidelines, but they are not carved in stone; their content and interpretation can evolve over time. The principles and spirit matter more than literal wording, and sometimes improving Wikipedia requires making exceptions.
That means WP:NRVE is also countered by 5P5. And the article does contain one reliable source. Anyways, per WP:SNOW:Use common sense and don't follow a process for the sake of it, but do allow discussions to take place if in doubt. The snowball clause is one way that editors are encouraged to exercise common sense and avoid pointy, bureaucratic behavior. The snowball clause states: If an issue has a snowball's chance in hell of being accepted by a certain process, there's no need to run it through the entire process.
The grand takeaway of everything her is: 1. nothing is set in stones 2. All the policies/guidelines are created for the benefit of wikipedia, sometimes we have to avoid taking everything to the letter, and ignore a rule for the greater good. 3. SNOW close doesnt really need participation from others if it is clearly/obviously going to happen/not happen. 4. The article is obviously going to be kept per GEOLAND, no need to go through the process for that. —usernamekiran (talk) 20:22, 2 June 2022 (UTC)3. SNOW close doesnt really need participation from others if it is clearly/obviously going to happen/not happen. 4. The article is obviously going to be kept per GEOLAND, no need to go through the process for that.
That's where I disagree very much. The article is not "obviously going to be kept per GEOLAND" - in fact, given the lack of WP:SIGCOV about it, I would not at all be surprised if this did get redirected. You closing it per this seems very much a WP:SUPERVOTE, one which is not in line with broader policy. RandomCanadian (talk / contribs) 20:32, 2 June 2022 (UTC)

2023 Nigerian general election
How can this page be moved? A few weeks ago, you closed discussion on the move and while your reasoning was sound, it is not sustainable for one side to refuse discussion because the status quo will be kept no matter what. Watercheetah99 (talk) 20:55, 7 August 2022 (UTC)
At this point the page should just be moved. If a side is unwilling to argue their case for four entire months, then they have conceded. A half dozen chances and nothing. Please move the page. Watercheetah99 (talk) 06:44, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
Again, I ask for the page to be moved. They have been given so many chances to make their case, I even went to Number 57's talk page and they just said "I am not going to change my mind and agree with you" without responding to anything. Panam2014 just threatened to report me. Both have clearly dropped any pretense of good faith discussion. As you have noted, the page's stable title is 2023 Nigerian elections which is an appropriate title for the article in addition to the name now being practically uncontested. Please change the name. Watercheetah99 (talk) 21:29, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
- I've set out very clearly why I believe the article should not be moved at the WP:Politics talk page; the fact that you disagree with me does not mean I have not made my case. I have responded several times over many months but Watercheetah is unable to stop flogging this dead horse. Number 57 21:50, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
- As you are well aware, you have not argued in good faith against the page move; in fact, you have not argued against the page move in months. You rightly abandoned the illogical Panam2014 anti-page move argument because it makes no sense, instead bringing in an understandable but needless page split discussion that's clearly separate. Considering the fact that you have not even attempted to argue against the page move, it should be moved then you can open a page split discussion. I would disagree with the split but at the very least, I will engage in the discussion. Watercheetah99 (talk) 23:57, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
And yet again, Number 57 is gone. The only way that this can be resolved is with a page move, only then will Number 57 grace us with an explanation for anything because otherwise we don't get to know why only one opinion matters. Please change the name so that Number 57 can finally argue for the page split they want and the uncontested name change can finally go through. Watercheetah99 (talk) 04:29, 21 August 2022 (UTC)

Darya Dugina move RM closure
Hi Usernamekiran! You closed (here) the RM of Darya Dugina, which makes sense because the whole thing was a bit messy, first having a requested move and then the article splitting in two, part of it at the destination.
There is a thing though. As we have a merge in process right now, the simplest thing would be to have the merge either on the bio or the killing depending on whether the move is or isn't successful. I tried to clarify it here on the talkpage. The only thing is that you have closed the move as "procedural close", so that complicates things a bit. If you don't mind and it isn't to much work, it would be nice to know if the move is or isn't successful. Thank you. — AdrianHObradors (talk) 06:59, 29 August 2022 (UTC)

Early end of the backlog drive
A few days ago, new page patrollers got the backlog to zero. Due to the unprecedented success of the backlog drive, it will be ending early—at the end of 24 October, or in approximately two hours.
Barnstars will be awarded as soon as the coords can tally the results. Streak awards will be allocated based on the first three weeks of the drive, with the last three days being counted as part of week three.
Great work everyone! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:50, 24 October 2022 (UTC)
Incorrect link changes
This and other edits like it was a bad mistake. Spectral radiance was still the correct link. Changing links (and text!) to "radiance" made the sentence incorrect. "Radiance" and "spectral radiance" are not interchangeable terms. Srleffler (talk) 20:55, 5 November 2022 (UTC)
- @Srleffler: Hi. Apologies for the delayed reply. and inconvenience caused by incorrect link changes. I would have corrected the link changes myself, but I am not sure which links need to be changed, and which ones need to be kept the same. Fortunately there were only around 25 changes made. Would you kindly look at it? (Special:Contributions/Usernamekiran_(AWB)) I apologise for my blunder again. —usernamekiran (talk) 09:51, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
- I think I got them all. None of the links needed to be changed. This was not a disambiguation problem, but rather a case where the same topic was being covered in two articles under different names. The right solution was to consolidate the coverage in one place, which renaming the article accomplished.--Srleffler (talk) 04:27, 8 November 2022 (UTC)

Please take a moment to update your signature
Hi there! You have a custom signature set in your account preferences (at Usernamekiran (AWB)). A change to Wikipedia's software has made your current custom signature incompatible with the software.
The problem: Your signature does not contain a link to your user page, your user talk page, or your contributions page.
The solutions: You can reset your signature to the default, or you can fix your signature.
- Solution 1: Reset your signature to the default:
- Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
- Uncheck the box (☑︎→☐) that says "Treat the above as wiki markup."
- Remove anything in the Signature: text box.
- Click the blue "Save" button at the bottom of the page. (The red "Restore all default settings" button will reset all of your preference settings, not just the signature.)
- Solution 2: Fix your custom signature:
- Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
- Change the signature to make the signature appear how you want it to appear.
- Click Save to update to your newly fixed signature.
More information is available at Wikipedia:Signatures#Customizing how everyone sees your signature. If you have followed these instructions and still want help, please leave a message at Wikipedia talk:Signatures. Thanks. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:33, 12 November 2022 (UTC)

Tagging pages for speedy deletion
Hello, Usernamekiran,
When you are patrolling, could you consider moving incomplete articles to Draft space rather than tagging them for CSD A7 deletion? Especially if they are newly created articles, page creators can work on improving the sourcing and content, unlike articles that are overly promotional. It also gives article creators some time to work on their pages. It's just a suggestion and I've found this works for A7 criteria in particular. Thanks for your contributions! Liz Read! Talk! 03:37, 10 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Liz: Hi. Yes, I had doubts about that A7, and just a few minutes I had also created this page. But I thought, the person lacked the notability, so I preferred A7 over draftification. But from now on, I will use A7 only for promotional or super non-notable articles. See you around :-) —usernamekiran (talk) 03:51, 10 December 2022 (UTC)
Wild Carrot move discussion
Greetings. I would urge you to re-evaluate this RM close. The users handwaving WP:DIFFCAPS away as "controversial" are effectively using WP:LOCALCONSENSUS to override established guidelines. As Necrothesp themselves stated, there's no logical reason to consider "Iron Maiden" unambiguous but not "Wild Carrot". The NGram cited by BD2412 doesn't necessarily show independent use of "Wild Carrot" apart from the band name. The title case form is/was used in titles, which I guess is what is showing up on the graph, see this example from 1921. —Sangdeboeuf (talk) 01:46, 21 December 2022 (UTC)
- The Red Meat example cited by a couple of users is a red herring; the examples of Iron maiden / Iron Maiden and Ice cube / Ice Cube currently given under WP:DIFFCAPS are a perfect analogue for the use of title case in this scenario. —Sangdeboeuf (talk) 02:02, 21 December 2022 (UTC)
- Well let's remove all doubt. Here is an NGram showing usage from 1800 to 1990, the entire range being long before the band came into existence, showing a substantial proportion of uses of capitalized "Wild Carrot". BD2412 T 01:51, 21 December 2022 (UTC)
- Those are almost certainly titles of works, chapters, sections, etc. This seems obvious from the way usage of "Wild Carrot" nearly parallels "wild carrot", and is always less than "wild carrot", because a term will be repeated in any given text far more than in headings. We can't infer from this graph that
anyone ever used"Wild Carrot" on its own was ever commonly used for the plant. —Sangdeboeuf (talk) 01:58, 21 December 2022 (UTC) edited 02:37, 21 December 2022 (UTC)- Doug Elliott, Wild Roots: A Forager's Guide... (1995), p. 75: "Wild Carrot is found in meadows, fields, and roadsides throughout most of this country, though it was naturalized after importation from Europe. ... These hairs are a very important identification mark because poison hemlock, which is very similar to Wild Carrot in general appearance and habitat, has no hairs. Confusion between Wild Carrot and poison hemlock has been the last mistake of many enthusiastic wild food foragers".
- Illinois. Dept. of Agriculture, Annual Report - Illinois Department of Agriculture (1922), p. 76: "KANKAKEE COUNTY had 72 salable samples and 7 unsalable because of Wild Carrot and Buckhorn in 5 and Buckhorn in 2. Forty-nine samples were analyzed for germination.
KENDALL COUNTY had 121 salable samples and 10 unsalable because of Wild Carrot in 5, Buckhorn and Dock in 2, Wild Carrot and Buckhorn in 1, Wild Carrot and Dock in 1 and Buckhorn in 1. Ninety-seven samples were analyzed for germination". - Merritt Lyndon Fernald, Alfred Charles Kinsey, Reed Clark Rollins, Edible Wild Plants of Eastern North America (p. 301): "The WILD CARROT, which is such a pest in many old fields, belongs to the same species as the garden carrot but its root is small and tough... Mrs. Morrell, who writes from a large experience with edible wild plants in Maine, states that the roots raised from the seeds of the Wild Carrot are remarkably sweet".
- Roger Tory Peterson, Peterson First Guide to Wildflowers of Northeastern and North-central North America (1998), p. 26: "This huge, woolly relative of the Wild Carrot (below) stands 4 to 8 or even 10 feet tall".
- Anne Pratt, Wild Flowers, Volume 2 (1853), p. 187-88: "The Wild Carrot is a very frequent plant on pastures and the borders of fields, and is the only British species, the kind called the Sea-side Carrot being most probably but a variety of it. ... The Wild Carrot is generally found throughout Europe, and Sir T. L. Mitchell, when in Australia, saw a very similar species in abundance there".
- Not going to bother fully formatting this one, but here's a 1935 regular newspaper article from the Kemptville, Ontario Weekly Advance using the capitalized "Wild Carrot" about a half dozen times. BD2412 T 02:08, 21 December 2022 (UTC)

- @Sangdeboeuf: Hello. Thank you for bringing your doubt/concerns with the closer (me). When I closed the RM, I considered rationales provided by everybody. If we assume Necrothesp's argument/rationale is not policy based, and even if we discard it, we still have three other sound/well reasoned rationales. That's the most I can say as an uninvolved closer, if I go any further (or had gone during the closing), by close would become biased, and it wouldn't remain impartial. I will say that the close was appropriate. —usernamekiran (talk) 03:10, 21 December 2022 (UTC)
- Amakuru's argument was essentially the same as Necrothesp's, and similarly lacks a basis in policy. My rebuttals of the other arguments were just as sound and well reasoned. Therefore the close was not appropriate. —Sangdeboeuf (talk) 03:26, 21 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Sangdeboeuf: I wouldn't say that. Even though Amakuru did not refer to any policy, their rationale was well reasoned. At most, it can be said the result was "no consensus", instead of "consensus against move". —usernamekiran (talk) 04:06, 21 December 2022 (UTC)

- WP:LOCALCONSENSUS:
Consensus among a limited group of editors, at one place and time, cannot override community consensus on a wider scale.
Italics mine to highlight things that are simply not true here. Consensus at many RMs has been that DIFFCAPS is not a great method of disambiguation and it has frequently not been applied. LOCALCONSENSUS also saysIn article title discussions, in the event of a lack of consensus, the applicable policy preserves the most recent prior stable title.
As here, except there was a very clear consensus against the proposed move. -- Necrothesp (talk) 11:08, 21 December 2022 (UTC)

Feel free to ask me if you have any questions or doubts. See you around :-) —usernamekiran (talk) 23:35, 11 January 2023 (UTC)
- Oh, thank you! Does it mean I can also remove it once I resolve the issue? By the way, I am quite a beginner here with only 10 successful Wikipedia pages done. I wonder if you can help me with my other pages. One of these two have multiple issues and would be nice to have an expert to help me out. This will also help me learn the ins and outs of Wikipedia, too. Thank you. By the way, sorry if I sounded like rude in my first message. I was on mobile and in a hurry to type that because I was also working at that time. Bmjc98 (talk) 01:14, 12 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Bmjc98: Hi. Apologies for such a delayed reply, I thought I had already replied. Yes, you are right, for non-controversial/technical maintenance tags, anyone can remove it including the article creator. Sure, I would love to help you with other pages. Also, if you are interested learning more about wikipedia editing, but are not sure how, or where to begin, then I suggest you to visit WP:Teahouse every three-four days. New editors ask all sorts of questions there. Even if you don't participate there, visiting it twice a week would certainly give you a lot of information. —usernamekiran (talk) 10:26, 1 February 2023 (UTC)

Ashish Dixit
An article you nominated for deletion Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ashish Dixit is re-created by a new user. I can't check the deleted version but I saw that the article was deleted in soft-deletion and there was only comment by a blocked sock. --- Misterrrrr (talk) 09:17, 5 February 2023 (UTC)

Table of contents for User:KiranBOT/MOSTREFS
Hello. Thanks for your great work in WP:MOSTREFS bot. My only suggestion is to add a table of contents for User:KiranBOT/MOSTREFS as it is tedious to scroll to find the List section. Thanks. Sanglahi86 (talk) 09:41, 10 March 2023 (UTC)

Recent changes
- The system for automatically creating categories for the Babel extension has had several important changes and fixes. One of them allows you to insert templates for automatic category descriptions on creation, allowing you to categorize the new categories. [11][12][13][14][15]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 4 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 5 April. It will be on all wikis from 6 April (calendar).
- Some older Web browsers will stop being able to use JavaScript on Wikimedia wikis from this week. This mainly affects users of Internet Explorer 11. If you have an old web browser on your computer you can try to upgrade to a newer version. [16]
- The deprecated
jquery.hoverIntent
module has been removed. This module could be used by gadgets and user scripts, to create an artificial delay in how JavaScript responds to a hover event. Gadgets and user scripts should now use jQueryhover()
oron()
instead. Examples can be found in the migration guide. [17] - Some of the links in Special:SpecialPages will be re-arranged. There will be a clearer separation between links that relate to all users, and links related to your own user account. [18]
- You will be able to hide the Reply button in archived discussion pages with a new
__ARCHIVEDTALK__
magic word. There will also be a new.mw-archivedtalk
CSS class for hiding the Reply button in individual sections on a page. [19][20][21]
Future changes
- The Vega software that creates data visualizations in pages, such as graphs, will be upgraded to the newest version in the future. Graphs that still use the very old version 1.5 syntax may stop working properly. Most existing uses have been found and updated, but you can help to check, and to update any local documentation. Examples of how to find and fix these graphs are available.

Planning on finishing this? I'm happy to help write it. — Qwerfjkltalk 20:11, 6 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Qwerfjkl: Hi. I had started working on that tutorial almost an year ago. At that time, the pywikibot tutorial at wikitech was a little contradictory/had a few issues. This was the main reason why I started working on the tutorial. But now that tutorial is fine, and Novem Linguae's tutorial is very helpful as well. So instead of a pywikibot tutorial, now I am thinking of creating a tutorial for replace.py (replace bot) and customised general fixes. Even though very slow, I am still working on it. Please feel free edit the User:Usernamekiran/Toolforge pywikibot tutorial, or its talkpage, but I am instead of being about pywikibot, I am going to make it mostly about customised general fixes. Please let me know if you have any suggestions regarding anything. —usernamekiran (talk) 08:32, 8 April 2023 (UTC)

Can i become a fact checker of conspiracytheories? --Liberatoryeberhardt2 (talk) 08:58, 20 June 2023 (UTC)
- @Liberatoryeberhardt2: Hi. I'm not sure what exactly you mean by a "fact checker" of conspiracy theories. In regards to Wikipedia, we do check facts of (Wikipedia's) article contents with the sources provided in the article itself. This is related to Wikipedia's core policy of WP:Verifiability. There are some categories where articles are added which need "exact page from source book", "fact not present in the source", and similar issues. But if you are talking about something like FactCheck.org, or snopes, then I can't help you there. But if it's related to Wikipedia, then feel free to ask me anything. —usernamekiran (talk) 19:55, 20 June 2023 (UTC)

Indonesian football
As a project tagger of Indonesian topics, I am a little concerned by the arrival of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Men%27s_footballers_in_Indonesia_by_club and friends, so to speak, as it appears not to have content, and there is already a vast ocean (hard to know an appropriate collective noun for the phenomenon) of football articles in the Indonesian project already, hope your answer reflects good humour in the face of the vastness of football articles in the project... - Hey JarrahTree! I'm actually very pleased to see your message! (not saying for small talk/formalities) It's always nice to hear from old colleagues. Sorry for a delayed response, but I was having some emergency (it's still going on currently), so unfortunately I'm low on humour as well. Regarding the empty categories, there is this bot task to update categories like "Footballers in <country>", "<nationality> footballers" to "Men's footballers in <country>", and "Men's <nationality> footballers". Apparently, there was an RfC which cleared these naming conventions like an year ago, but I missed that piece of intel. The bot already created all the categories that need to be updated. Like you said, there are whopping 1,138 categories, and around 190k articles that need to be updated. The bot is populating the categories as we speak, with around 2 edits per 3 seconds (I think/guess), but it will still take a while to finish the entire task. Courtesy ping to Liz. —usernamekiran (talk) 16:19, 5 July 2023 (UTC)

Hello, Usernamekiran,
For some reason your bot made this edit that added a lot of red link categories to this article. Maybe those categories should exist but according to WP:REDNO, red link categories have to be removed or the category created. Since I assume that your bot doesn't have the functionality to intelligently create new categories, it should stay away from adding nonexisting categories to articles or, really, any page on the project because doing this will require another editor to come and remove them. Bots are supposed to save editor time, not create work for them to fix. I haven't really looked into your bot and whether this was an isolated incident but I thought I'd bring it to your attention in case its programming needs to be tweaked. Thank you! Liz Read! Talk! 21:09, 2 July 2023 (UTC)
- Hello Liz. The edits were expected. It was a 50 edit trial per the BRFA. Another trial of 2000 edits has been approved, but I'll get to my computer in 2-3 hours from now, currently on mobile. In the next run (after 2-3 hours), the bot will create non-existent categories, and it will also populate a lot of these categories. Once the bot is fully approved, it will update around 190k articles with around 1500 categories. I apologise for the inconvenience. —usernamekiran (talk) 23:03, 2 July 2023 (UTC)
- Now your bot has created hundreds of empty categories! These categories will be tagged CSD C1 if they aren't filled. I really don't recommend the mass-creation of categories in order to avoid this problem. I won't tag them right now but can you assure me that they will be populated presently? It's really unclear to me exactly what tasks your bot has been authorized to do regarding categories. Is it just handling categories for football players? Liz Read! Talk! 06:07, 3 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Liz: Hi. As mentioned in my earlier response, the bot is supposed to create around 1500 empty categories. Then it will populate these categories by updating the articles (the original reason why you had contacted me first). If the bot first updates the articles, then categories will be red links, if it creates the categories first, then the categories will be empty. But the bot is supposed to create the categories, and then update the articles soon after that. Kindly be assured that the newly created empty categories will be populated soon. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any doubts, concerns, or if you find some error with the bot. —usernamekiran (talk) 06:20, 3 July 2023 (UTC)
- PS: you can find the detailed information at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/KiranBOT 7, it has been linked in each edit summary by the bot. —usernamekiran (talk) 06:21, 3 July 2023 (UTC)
- Okay. I just tag empty categories for deletion on a daily basis so this is all new to me. It will be confusing to see 600+ new empty categories on the Empty Categories list tonight. How long will it take for them to be populated? Liz Read! Talk! 20:30, 3 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Liz: Hi. The bot task has been fully approved, and my program is ready. But unfortunately, there was an emergency, and I had to go out of town. I think I will get home in 48 hours from now, I will do it then. All the categories should be populated at least with one article in 3 or 4 hours (after the bot stars working). Would you kindly skip tagging any football related categories for three days? I apologise for the inconvenience. —usernamekiran (talk) 20:50, 3 July 2023 (UTC)
- Please see this link. See, it takes 10 minutes to create hundreds of categories and a great many more hours to populate them. I will hold off tagging them primarily because I don't want to untag 600 categories in 2 or 3 days. But please keep this situation in mind as you continue to refine how your bot handles categories.
- Sorry to hear about your emergency, I hope it gets resolved safely. Liz Read! Talk! 06:34, 4 July 2023 (UTC)

- Well, according to Wikipedia:Database reports/Empty categories, we've gone from 600+ empty football/soccer categories to about 225 empty categories. So, that's some improvement and I appreciate it. It looks like what's left is categories that categorize football players by club. I'm not sure how the bot can make those judgments but I'm not a technical editor. But since I did my share of "Argh! What's happening!" comments on your talk page, I just wanted to thank you and your bot for making a significant step of progress in populating all of these categories.
- I meant to ask, is this process a one-time deal, involving football players of different nationalities and clubs? Or are you going to take on other branches of our Wikipedia category tree? Liz Read! Talk! 01:09, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Liz: Hi. I apologise, but I had forgotten that I had created two different programs. The second one was to populate to "football players by club" categories. I test ran it again, and I have asked for confirmation from an experienced editor from football wikiproject. Once I get the confirmation, I will run the second program. It will populate the empty categories fairly sooner than the older program. Regarding your second question: no, this is just one-time thing. Even if I get a bot request for similar work, I will update the program so that it will create the categories as they are being populated, so there would be no red-links nor empty ones. :-) —usernamekiran (talk) 13:45, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- @JarrahTree and Liz: All the categories have been populated appropriately, except three categories: Category:Expatriate men's footballers in the United Kingdom, Category:Korean men's footballers, and Category:British expatriate men's footballers. Their counterparts, Category:Expatriate footballers in the United Kingdom, Category:Korean footballers, and Category:British expatriate footballers do not have any articles either (they are containers). I have told the concerned person to take a look at them, and they will move the appropriate categories and/or articles to the blank ones. Let me know if you find something out of the ordinary. —usernamekiran (talk) 17:07, 10 July 2023 (UTC)

Hi I want to write an article which would be a good topic to write --Anonymous man34 (talk) 15:30, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
- (by talk reader) @Anonymous man34: Generally, new editors should not write new articles. There is a learning curve on Wikipedia and you would be better off improving an existing Wikipedia article you've already read and have references to add. If you must, see Wikipedia:Requested articles and select a field of study to find a list of articles which have been requested for creation. Chris Troutman (talk) 18:11, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
Question from Tornadoboy2345 (14:08, 28 July 2023)
Hello. How do you put a picture on Wiki? --Tornadoboy2345 (talk) 14:08, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Tornadoboy2345: Hello. If the picture you want insert in the article is already on English Wikipedia, or Wikimedia commons, then kindly follow Help:Pictures. If you want to upload a picture, then in short, it needs to be in public domain. To simplify things, if you have photographed the picture then it is considered as "own work", and you can release it in public domain. Generally speaking 95% of the images available on internet are copyrighted, and can not be uploaded on commons. Regarding the second scenario, you can find relevant information on Wikipedia:Image use policy. I have also posted some useful links on your talkpage. I will initiate a move review due to my disagreement with your closure decision. Dl.thinker (talk) 12:43, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Dl.thinker: no issues :-) —usernamekiran (talk) 14:11, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Dl.thinker: Hi. Even though I do not have any issue, I would recommend against a move review, as there was no support at all for the proposed title. First two arguments suggested the title "Royal Charleroi S.C.", and the next two opposed based on different reasoning. But what I mistyped was "three months", instead of "two-three months". I also think a new RM after around two months with proposed title "Royal Charleroi S.C." would get positive response, as you as well, supported that title in the RM on August 2. —usernamekiran (talk) 17:49, 8 August 2023 (UTC)

TERF redirect
Hi, I believe you were the closer on a series of changes that took place which renamed the article on TERF to TERF_(acronym) and then redirected TERF to "gender critical feminism". The discussion for this move took place entirely on the page for "TERF" and not "gender critical feminism", which was the page actually affected most by it. As such, anybody who contests this (and given there are ongoing discussions about even the mention of "TERF" in the lede on that page, there are several) was not notified of this highly contentious move. I am considering opening a move review. Void if removed (talk) 10:03, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
- @Void if removed: Hi. I just went through the discussion at Talk:TERF (acronym)#Requested move 31 August 2023. I also moved another conversation to the subsection of that move: Talk:TERF (acronym)#TERF move. To summarise: there were no clear opposes, and four supports to the move. Later (after the discussion was closed), Slatersteven expressed that they had/meant to oppose. Still, that would be consensus for the move. I am not opposing the move review, but the move review will most probably be in favour of the current close. My suggestion is to start a fresh move discussion, and notify appropriate wikiproject/venues after initiating the discussion. Let me know if you have any more questions/doubts. Regards, —usernamekiran (talk) 13:18, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
- It is less about the renaming of TERF to TERF (Acronym) which is not contentious, than the redirection of TERF to Gender critical feminism, which is contentious, and was not discussed on that page at all.Void if removed (talk) 13:24, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
- @Usernamekiran: Having reviewed the move discussion, it is clear that the intention of the rename was specifically to redirect the term "TERF" to the page "gender critical feminism", but that page was never notified in advance. Per one comment in the discussion: "The primary meaning of TERF is the ideology or movement itself, which is covered by the article Gender-critical feminism". This is by no means clear and some editors who have been active on that page such as myself would have objected in the strongest terms to this move - it is highly contentious, and not a move that should be taken lightly.Void if removed (talk) 15:04, 23 September 2023 (UTC)

wikitext
orcss
. Gadgets that use this option will only load on pages with the given content models.

- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 10 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 11 October. It will be on all wikis from 12 October (calendar).
- Starting on Wednesday, a new set of Wikipedias will get "Add a link" (Swahili Wikipedia, Walloon Wikipedia, Waray Wikipedia, Wolof Wikipedia, Kalmyk Wikipedia, Xhosa Wikipedia, Mingrelian Wikipedia, Yiddish Wikipedia, Yoruba Wikipedia, Zhuang Wikipedia, Zeelandic Wikipedia, Min Nan Wikipedia, Zulu Wikipedia). This is part of the progressive deployment of this tool to more Wikipedias. The communities can configure how this feature works locally. [25]
- At some wikis, newcomers are suggested images from Commons to add to articles without any images. Starting on Tuesday, newcomers at these wikis will be able to add images to unillustrated article sections. The specific wikis are listed under "Images recommendations" at the Growth team deployment table. You can learn more about this feature. [26]
- In the mobile web skin (Minerva) the CSS ID

Hello! I'd like to create a Wiki page for the company I work for, a computer chipmaker called FuriosaAI. I understand that the text needs to be accurate, sourced, and free of marketingspeak. Is there anything else I need to keep in mind?
I'd also like to contribute edits in other ways, if that's helpful. I'm a longtime fan of (and donor to!) the project.
Thank you,
Oliver --Oliversomething (talk) 16:17, 16 October 2023 (UTC)
- (by talk reader) @Oliversomething: I'm sorry to hear that you've given money to the Wikimedia Foundation. They waste the money for their own whims and have never given the editors a dime. They routinely ignore our community requests. Regarding your conflict of interest, you should not write about your employer because we doubt that you could do a fair job. In fact, new editors should not attempt to create articles, at all. It seldom works out. Instead, post at WP:Requested articles. We do welcome other contributions from you. Marathi wikipedia
Hi usernamekiran, I saw what you said elsewhere about stopping image uploads there—can you elaborate? Sounds interesting, but only if you're comfortable doing so of course. Hope all's well. Serial 18:26, 16 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Serial Number 54129: Hi. All is well here, well almost. I hope you are doing well. On a lot wikipedia sites, unlike enwiki, uploading non-free images is not allowed. Like we on enwiki use free images from commons, these wikipedias have commons as the only option. I am aware of the mrwiki discussion where it was decided to not to host non-free images on mrwiki, but I don't know when they disabled image uploading completely. If you go to upload page on mrwiki, it basically says:
You are not allowed to upload this file, for the following reason: Action you requested is limited to the following group: Administrators.
for a little trivia: Marathi language ranks 13th in world by number of native speakers, and third in India. —usernamekiran (talk) 18:37, 16 October 2023 (UTC)- Interesting, thanks very much! It seems a bit over the top to ban all images. Something political, do you think? Serial 16:04, 17 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Serial Number 54129: no, on the contrary, in the past there was an admin who was trying to make mrwiki as much independent as possible, which included "no interference from meta" policy. some editors wanted mrwiki to be completely autonomous. That included meta policies not being applicable to mrwiki, this also included the idea of hosting non-free images. Regarding banning upload of all the images, it seems productive. mrwiki lacks regulars/active users. also, the copyright laws are not well known to non-editors within Marathi community. if non-free images are banned, then there is no point to allow other types of images on mrwiki as they will get transferred to commons. also, technically it would be impossible to restrict only non-free images (although maximum size parameter could be set). I see this as a feasible option, as it automatically directs the images to commons, and no need to patrol images on local wiki. —usernamekiran (talk) 19:57, 17 October 2023 (UTC)

Category:Articles with many references
Hi usernamekiran. Back in February, you created Category:Articles with many references "as an experiment" (that was your edit summary). It currently contains two pages and its purpose is unclear, to me at least. I'm tempted to nominate it for deletion, but before I do, I'd like to check with you that you don't have meaningful plans for the category. Cheers, Pichpich (talk) 16:33, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Pichpich: Hi. The guys from Wikipedia:Articles with the most references had asked for a bot to automate the process. Currently, a bot updates User:KiranBOT/MOSTREFS every three months. I'm planning to integrate that category with the task. But that will need couple of discussions, first at Wikipedia:Articles with the most references, and then at village pump. I think we should keep the category till then. I will initiate the first discussion in a couple of days. Thanks for approaching me first, that was very thoughtful of you, and very much appreciated. —usernamekiran (talk) 19:43, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
- Ok, I'll leave the category alone for the moment. You can always CSD it yourself if you see it's not being used. I do have one request though: it's a maintenance category, so it should probably contain talk pages, rather than mainspace articles. I've made that change manually for the two pages currently in the cat but if it's populated by a bot, the operator should be told to include talk pages, not articles. Cheers, Pichpich (talk) 21:36, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks. —usernamekiran (talk) 22:04, 28 October 2023 (UTC)

Recent changes
- The Structured Content team, as part of its project of improving UploadWizard on Commons, made some UX improvements to the upload step of choosing own vs not own work (T347590), as well as to the licensing step for own work (T347756).
- The Design Systems team has released version 1.0.0 of Codex, the new design system for Wikimedia. See the full announcement about the release of Codex 1.0.0.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 31 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 1 November. It will be on all wikis from 2 November (calendar).
- Listings on category pages are sorted on each wiki for that language using a library. For a brief period on 2 November, changes to categories will not be sorted correctly for many languages. This is because the developers are upgrading to a new version of the library. They will then use a script to fix the existing categories. This will take a few hours or a few days depending on how big the wiki is. You can read more. [29][30]
- Starting November 1, the impact module (Special:Impact) will be upgraded by the Growth team. The new impact module shows newcomers more data regarding their impact on the wiki. It was tested by a few wikis during the last few months. [31]
Future changes
- There is a proposed plan for re-enabling the Graph Extension. You can help by reviewing this proposal and sharing what you think about it.
- The WMF is working on making it possible for administrators to edit MediaWiki configuration directly. This is similar to previous work on Special:EditGrowthConfig. A technical RfC is running until November 08, where you can provide feedback.

Question from Atk-Lib (14:50, 21 November 2023)
Hi! In the guidelines for creating article descriptions, it says to avoid starting with a capital unless it's a proper noun, but the example image on the same page has the first word of the article description capitalised. Also, the mobile app specifically reminds me to not start with a lowercase letter. Which should I do? --Atk-Lib (talk) 14:50, 21 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Tributebass (18:34, 26 November 2023)
Hi,
So I was part of a group that is listed here in Wikipedia. There is missing information about me and the awards that were nominated, several years worth. I do not know enough about how to edit the information without messing up the page for that entity, Tribute Quartet. I need help inputting that I was nominated in the Singing News Fan Awards in the category of "Favorite Bass" 2011-2020. Thanks --Tributebass (talk) 18:34, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
- (by talk reader) @Tributebass: Wikipedia relies on significant coverage in reliable sources. Can you point to books, newspapers, or periodicals to verify your claims? While I can understand you want the article to reflect points you find important, we can only reflect what reliable sources say. Also, since you have a conflict of interest it would be better for you to list your citations at the talk page so a dis-interested editor can do it. Chris Troutman (talk) 18:57, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
Yes, of course the information can be listed, but the information you have on there now is no different than that of which I am pointing out. And the information can be added to a talk page, though I really don't know myself how to do that, but if I had not said that it's information from my own life, none of you would be any the wiser. So, sure, someone else can list the information or if you're willing to point me in a direction of instruction, I'll do it myself. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tributebass (talk • contribs) 02:21, 27 November 2023 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – December 2023
News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2023).
- Following a talk page discussion, the Administrators' accountability policy has been updated to note that while it is considered best practice for administrators to have notifications (pings) enabled, this is not mandatory. Administrators who do not use notifications are now strongly encouraged to indicate this on their user page.
- Following a motion, the Extended Confirmed Restriction has been amended, removing the allowance for non-extended-confirmed editors to post constructive comments on the "Talk:" namespace. Now, non-extended-confirmed editors may use the "Talk:" namespace solely to make edit requests related to articles within the topic area, provided that their actions are not disruptive.
- The Arbitration Committee has announced a call for Checkusers and Oversighters, stating that it will currently be accepting applications for CheckUser and/or Oversight permissions at any point in the year.

Question from Jeymstuncer (09:11, 13 December 2023)
Hello, I am a series music composer. I have TV series published. these series have accounts on wikipedia. how do I tag my name there. --Jeymstuncer (talk) 09:11, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Jeymstuncer: Hello. If there is a reliable source mentioning your name as composer, then you should add something like "XYZ is the composer of this TV series
<ref>link to relibale source</ref>
" to the article of that TV series. The link to source should be inside the ref tags. You will find more information about reliable sources at WP:RS, but most importantly, kindly read WP:COI first of all things. —usernamekiran (talk) 10:23, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
Question from Amigopet (06:47, 16 December 2023)
Hello “Houseblaster” and ‘Userrnamekiran’, thank you for offering to help me.
How do you link part of the edited text to a name that is already on Wikipedia? --Amigopet (talk) 06:47, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Amigopet: Hello. You have to put that particular text in two square brackets. You will be able to see that type of brackets whenever you are editing text with links. You will be able to find more information at Help:Wikitext#Wikilinks. —usernamekiran (talk) 10:13, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
Question from Amigopet (20:36, 17 December 2023)
I am a member of the Royal Queensland Art Society (Brisbane Branch) which is a 137 year old non for profit organisation. Although we have 3 part-time paid staff, most of the work for the Society is done by volunteers such as me. I have noticed many Wikipedia articles about well-known deceased artists who were active members, and often office bearers of the Society, have little or no reference to the Society. My question is: is there a conflict of interest if I edit such articles to reflect the connection of these artists to the Society? I will only use published books as reference sources.
Thank you for your guidance. --Amigopet (talk) 20:36, 17 December 2023 (UTC)

- There will be full support for redirects in the Module namespace. The "Move Page" feature will leave an appropriate redirect behind, and such redirects will be appropriately recognized by the software (e.g. hidden from Special:UnconnectedPages). There will also be support for manual redirects. [66]
