Dwain Chambers article length

Hey man, the article is quite long and when you go to the edit page, it suggests itself that it's split. I'm wondering whether there's an obvious split point. Personally, I'd be tempted to suck out the drugs ban and his subsequent attempts at other sports. I'm not entirely sure whether it'd be worth it and if it would be detrimental to the overall article. Maybe it's something to do when he retires. Yes indeed it is a bit of a problem. Depending on how the article pans out until the end of his career, there are three options: (a) Leave as is— it is by no means to longest Wikipedia article and doesn't discuss anything trivial. (see Mircea Eliade and special:longpages). (b) Crudely trim it down a bit— removing or summarising minor track meets and events to focus on most notable events. (c) Spin off long sections into sub-articles and intensely summarise the content—this is done well on John McCain and is what I'm in the middle of doing for Usain Bolt's early career. The third option is my preference, as it allows both in-depth analysis and a thoroughly readable main article (and follows WP:Preserve). One thing that's clear is that this article simply must get shorter at some point. I changed my writing approach for Tyson Gay as I realised I was being to in-depth. About this chap (again), i want to discuss something with you: First, about the stuff i proposed at WPFOOTY, you're right, it's not a big deal if his name is or not hyphenated, i just brought that forward because i have too much time on my hands, man... ;)

2nd point: You inserted a reference in infobox, i enhanced it (you didn't call it that, and come to think of it, maybe it wasn't), but my question now is: i always thought that kind of info (team profiles, stats, etc) should be external link, not ref (i thought that should be full stories from official sources or newspaper articles). I relocated it in Pongolle's article, but immediately "undid", so everything stayed as you originally input it. What's your opinion on this?

It's okay to use any kind of reference you want as long as you use it correctly. Some of Wikipedia's guidelines are frankly idiotic. I've seen users remove useful external links because they had already been used to cite information (they get lost in a blue sea of references and just because its a reference doesn't mean it is useless as an external link). I've also seen people try to remove external links by using them to cite info in the article. Any quality article is sure to contain in excess of 20/30 references and editors are fools if they think users look through them (tiny text and all) as much as they use external links. My advice is: Use whatever you want to cite information and if the same source would also make a good external lin, then put it there too. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 01:17, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for trying to clean this up - the move needed to be removed from the page history, as it was a blatant BIO violation - so, my apologies if its disappearance caused any unnecessary trauma. I think it's all straight now, and the move doesn't appear in the article history. Please let me know if there are any further problems. You're welcome. I noticed that there was a question there about that article, and decided to find a reliable, external source to find out his patronymic. I too get annoyed when information on wiki articles is dropped in without references, especially on football articles (and especially after transfers!). I'm fully aware of Wikireader's opinions and allegiances but this has nothing to do with the topic. Islamic Extremism is present in Britain and British Pakistanis do form a portion of those involved in such activities. Indeed, I do not think much of the current form of the article but deletion is not the solution. Islamic Extremism among British Pakistanis

Hello. if you are interested I have some information which I could place in your sandbox which would be useful if you want to write an article on Islamic Extremism in Britain. I did not see it coming either since their was no consensus and default is to keep. anyway thanx for all your efforts. I still do strongly feel this is an important topic which needs to be on wikipedia under whatever title is acceptable. Hopefully Barack Obama will listen to Bruce Riedel about these issues and work to counter this important threat in cooperation with other friendly nations. First of all, capital letters isn't really helping clarify your point; if that was the case then I'm sure all international relations would be conducted in caps. It's not the case, so don't do it. Secondly, perhaps you should read Wikipedia:No original research: Wikipedia is only a reflection of real world sources, and you should use them to back up your statements. Thirdly, I think "playing style and ability" comparable to Maradona is even more of a complement than any hyperbole about a single goal that he scored against Getafe: Messi is more than that. Besides, talking about "stunning individual goals" makes you sound like a tabloid writer at best, and a besotted fifteen-year-old at worst.

Fourthly, I noted the young player of the year awards because those are the ones he's actually won and it represents that he is a young player; this is only the beginning of his career, hopefully he'll go on to achieve much more. Finally, when you state "best player in world" you are arguably including every living player, past or present. Such comparisons across generations are inherently flawed, and frankly you're are not going to get sources saying "Messi is as good as or better than Pele, Maradona, Beckenbauer, Zidane, Ronaldo, Cruyff, etc etc". I appreciate your sentiments on the Olympic Games article. The FAC process is far from perfect but I can't really fault the reviewers. They look at hundreds of articles and really do yoeman's work for little praise, and they get a lot of grief from editors. That said it does seem that the FA standard is a bit of a moving target that is hard to hit from time to time. I envy your skill with biographies, I stick with non-human subjects, at least for now. Lionel Messi

Even though your rewrite on Messi's page (about yesterday's Champions game) is good, definitely better than the original poster's, I think it's overly detailed sports commentary and should be removed. There is a constant battle in many player's articles with editors adding play-by-play. I don't think we should be commenting on individual games and individual goals in an encyclopedia. That's the trick you see! I see it as a little test for people, some editors just aren't as patient with (possible newbie) "red name" editors as they would be with "blue name" editors. Needless to say, anyone who edits the articles I tend to edit is familiar with me, and one click on my talk page or contributions list dismisses any "newbie" thoughts. Also, I had a user page once but it was just an angry person insulting me!

Someone mentioned that I could make a user page and alter my signature to keep the text red but I've still yet to work out how to do that. I'd fancy chucking in a link to my contributions too. erm yes, you have done it wrong again, style of theatre and a separate company named after that theatre... so there needs to be a page for the company and a page explaining about the traverse style of theatre. (traverse style of theatre is where the audience face one another with the action in the middle) yes there is a company called the traverse theatre company however it is a separate thing to the seating style of a type of theatre

Looks possible, the press clippings from the Record Mirror might help as does the fact that she had major label support and releases. IMDB and Allmusic pages only bolster the case for reliable sources and notability. We can still use the Manchester Beat page for the information. OCD and en dash

Highly-edited sources such as the NEJM seem to use an en dash in "obsessive–compulsive disorder"; see, for example, Jenike 2004 or Huyser et al. 2009. Almost everybody uses either a hyphen or an en dash, and Wikipedia style is to prefer an en dash here. But shouldn't we be discussing this in Talk:Obsessive-compulsive disorder #En dash versus hyphen rather than on our talk pages? Eubulides (talk) 19:41, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

There isn't conclusive proof of sockpuppetry. Anyway, I thought I'd gained his respect through all the work I put into Treble (association football) but evidently not. He is clearly a devout Red Devil with a prejudice against a certain other red team. I'm sure he'd love to point out that I'm a POV pushing Liverpool fan (as he has attempted above) but there is the little problem that I have contributed a good deal of content to Rio Ferdinand, Wes Brown, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Alex Ferguson amongst others, where as he reduces himself to sniping edits on Liverpool pages. I'm sure he took much pleasure in writing Ghost goal. I shall take the same pleasure on The Quintuple, except that my edits will have a neutral point of view, present the entirety of the facts, and have the approval of other editors. Hi Sillyfolkboy, I saw that you removed the flag from the infobox on the Joe Calzaghe page. It is not only quite usual to have a nationality flag in the infobox of boxers' pages (e.g. Steve Bendall, Robert Lloyd-Taylor, Ted "Kid" Lewis, Clinton McKenzie, Terry Marsh (boxer), Alan Minter, David Price (boxer), Steve Bendall, Robert Lloyd-Taylor, etc., etc.), it is unusual for there not to be a nationality flag in the infobox of boxers' pages. Fleet Foxes Album

Hi, you removed the Robert Christgau review for not being "informative". The thing is that every time an album recieves a dud (the "bomb) it means that it was so bad it doesn't need much further thoughts about it, here you can find all the information. For example please see the Review Robert Christgau gave the Black Keys' album Attack & Release, if you go to the website of the review you will see that all the albums that recieved a dud have no more lines dedicated to it. I understand that the links of the reviews must have information detailing the albums, but in this case my point is that all the duds reviews (bombs) are only icons. So if all the duds are mere icons should all of them be erased from wikipedia for being not so "informative"? I'm not a Robert Christgau fan, but I think that that would be like showing only the good reviews of him. Maybe the act of labelling an album with a mere icon is an act of sloth as you say but is his point of view and since he has been a music critic for many years that must be respected.

I think that in this case it (the duds) shows that he disliked the album, but is up to the person to judge whether is bad or good. I personally liked very much this album and all the other reviews give it lots of praise, but I think its also important to show the other side of the coin. The act of putting the dud among the reviews shows that not ALL the music critics liked the album, because without it, it appears that it was universally praised but since RC dind't...that means it wasn't universally praised, only generally and that makes it more objective. I hope you understand my point, regards.

From what I have seen each page must be moved separately. It is essentially a cut and paste operation, right? Make the new page then cut and past the contents from the old page into the new page. Only one page can be selected and cut at one time so each page must be done separately, old article to new article and old talk to new talk.

You corrected many problems including a wrong last name and a misspelled first name. This is good. You also now know that the pages of an article must be moved separately. This is better.

100/200m

Numbers speak for themselves? Only complete ignorance would lead someone to believe that higher maximum speeds are reached in the 200m. The fastest 10m splits always occur in the 100m, maximum speed is reached at roughly 60m in elite sprinters, this would occur on the bend during 200m yeilding a slower speed. Also the nature of the 200m means that it is ran at a slightly sub-maximal pace.

Just because a higher peak velocity is reached during the 100m over a 10m split (somewhat arbitrary) does not mean it is 'faster' per se - just on this particular yardstick. Very strange indeed. Does this effect the way I should write Ethiopians' articles then? This would explain why i've seen some Ethiopians that have been listed as related but have distinct names. Well, it can -- specifically how you refer to the person. For example, in the article Tirunesh Dibaba she should be referred to either by her full name "Tirunesh Dibaba" or as "Tirunesh"; Dibaba is her father's name. The exception is when the individual has decided to "Westernize" her/his name & uses her/his father's name as a legal surname. (In those cases, there should be a note explaining this, so to avoid frustrating edit wars.) And then there is the complication when the first name is a compound, as in the case of Haile Selassie: I don't know how many times I've had to correct editors who refer to him as "Haile" or "Selassie". Hey Sillyfolkoy, I received your invitation to work on the Athletics project. While I didn't know there was such a project, I've been editing or more correctly, fixing errors, particularly in Athletics content, for a couple of years now. Certainly add me to your project. Unfortunately, I don't know the deeper wiki coding for the addition to your list. I've searched but can't find a place (where other people's names appear) to add my name. I have not spent the time to explore the behind the scenes wiki communication much . . . though my frustration with the information deletion gestapo is growing. Mostly I fix glaring errors or links that just bother me too much. I have not spent the extensive time required to bring things like each athlete's profile up to the statistical standard I know the average athletics fan would appreciate. You know the difference and so do I. There is a mass of content, in this subject, that is vastly incomplete. Many former stars, Olympic Gold Medalists and legends, have merely a short attachment mentioning that they had won a Gold medal. While for many, that was their lone crowning achievement, others have an additional career ignored within their wikipedia entry. Cyprus disqualified

Hey, cyprus WAS disqualified for exceeding the permitted number of naturalized players (all of the players were not of cypriot nationality), the "cypriot" team had won 4 matches against each of Tunisia (66-42), Québec (90-47), the Ivory coast (80-64) and Mali (73-47) before the discovery of the fraud. Achievements tables

Hi Darius! I've noticed you've been making edits to achievements tables such as this. I think this is a good improvement as the tables do look a bit squashed up and the space left on a new wide table is generally enough for a dangling infobox or image.

I was wondering if you think its a good idea to create a {{AchievementTable}} template which could transclude the table code? (i.e. class="wikitable" style=" text-align:center; font-size:95%;" width="75%"). I suggest this because table code can seem a little tricky at times but a simple, standardised template could give newer editors the confidence to put their own tables in.

I'd support a whole sale switch over to your new style regardless. The plain, small wikitable ones don't look too great, but I'd be especially glad to see the back of these outdated monstrosities!

2010 Asian Indoor Athletics Championships

Hi, unfortunately both asianathletics.org and athletics.ir are wrong ! I watched the medal ceremony and the vietnamese girl also got the bronze ! you know the female events were held separately and I think that is the reason why they did this mistake ! Alvin Kraenzlein

In adding the date code, I was being bold. Adding the code parses the age for convenience. Haven't you ever read someone's bio and said, how old were they? Also, age is often shown in infoboxes (via the same calc code), but not every article has, or needs, an infobox. In the case of Olympic athletes like Alvin Kraenzlein, usually the only infobox is one of their medal record, not their personal data (name/locations/dates/whatever). I don't see any reason not to include an inline age calc where reasonable, and I couldn't find a policy against it; if you know of one, please tell me about it. Thanks! Hi again, I'm not bothered or offended, I hope I didn't come across as offended. I didn't reply previously because I didn't want to forget what I came to Wikipedia for at the time. I still think it's useful to show the age, tho I agree the double-paren looks bad. I don't know of another way to do it, tho. A deceased person is easy, just type it in, but a living person, it doesn't update automagically like it should if it's just typed in. Since you questioned I've looked for other templates to do it, but haven't found anything. Meike Kröger

I took the liberty of expanding Meike Kröger a bit and adding it to the DYK hook about Svetlana Shkolina - although Kröger could stand well on her own, with a hook centered on Kyrgyzstan. Re: Murky history

It just happened so that I've lived with top athletes for a couple of years .. There are too many reasons for the decline of sports in some countries and slow progress overall in some sports. Just to mention a few: restrictions on tools (poles, javelins, etc), restriction on doping, huge flow of athletes from East Europe (should never be underestimated), drop of prestige of sports in many countries whereas financial support is uneven. We can go on with this topic for ages, but I would rather not pretend I know and understand that all (and wish you the same ;-) .. Heck, if you want my opinion - the drive to excel for the country was much much stronger reason than doping. You should know better than I at least a dozen of clean athletes of that time who are still legends now. Materialscientist (talk) 03:18, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

I shouldn't even start this .. The power of that drive (excel for a country, especially in non-team sport) is not easy to understand for those who hadn't leaved in some places. Just an example that came to mind - Emil Zátopek and alike who would get to the top mostly by persistence, not only talents like Sergey Bubka. The end of cold war brought a much more personal and egoistic attitude. In my experience, "nationalism" was not an issue among athletes, thus Zátopek is hardly characteristic in this sense. Not to sell WP:OR, I remember an interview with some top "capitalist" athlete of the cold war era who was shocked when after some world cup they got together with a bunch of (Soviets as I recall) and realized that they are not "brainwashed robots" but normal guys, telling anecdotes about the socialism and Soviet regime :) .. Track and field athletics

A massive edit of the article was undertaken by User:Mipchunk. I wrote him this:

That is a massive rewrite of a very important article. Rather than simply reverting it, I'd rather open up a discussion, knowing the previous contents, developed over years through the eyes of numerous editors including myself, are still saved in the article's history. I'll forward a version of this note to User:Sillyfolkboy so this discussion can be included amongst other of the project's contributors.

In my eyes, its not entirely bad for the article to include numerous categories, and to run long. As open as the previous version looked, all the different categories of discussion were relatively brief and to the point--a few might have needed some tidying. This main page is our portal to the many specific sub-articles about the sport. You've deleted a lot of material, some of it is NOT duplicated in such an orderly fashion anywhere else--most particularly the list of events that has been going through some recent evolution. Sub-articles could be created to make up for those deletions, but the trend on Wikipedia is to merge down lesser significant items into a master article, which this was. Users tend to want to get their information in one place, rather than having to search blindly through multiple articles to get their basic information. As I tour Wikipedia, I still find interesting articles that should link back to this main page, with an introduction. Eliminating as much as you did, there is less organized opportunity for such links. Some of the parts you kept are lesser significant addendum to parts you deleted. The sport is a literal three ring circus, with lots of things involved. Our main article should include that aspect rather than filtering out significant information in favor of brevity.

In the interest of brevity and my time, I'm not going to dive into all the specifics yet. You have one opinion, I have another and I think many more interested minds should be heard from before such a massive edit is finalized.Trackinfo (talk) 18:14, 25 March 2010 (UTC)

Sillyfolkboy, I have reviewed your work-in-progress Track and Field article. It looks pretty good. There are some things that I would personally change, but it's not very important, and I would rather see the article come to fruition first before editing it. In light of your progress with that article, my edits to the Athletics main article are somewhat obsolete. However, I will work to prepare that article for the transition into a "hub" article to the four main categories of athletics: Track and Field, Cross Country Running, Road running, and Racewalking. As an aside, I notice in your draft article that you state the Mountain running is another major category of athletics. Traditionally it has not been considered apart from cross country, though only very recently (past decade) they created an organization, the World Mountain Running Association, which organizes mountain running independently from the IAAF. However, while now there is an entirely separate organization for this category of running, mountain running is still technically subsumed by cross country running. Frank Lampard assist stats

You should include Lampard's assists in his CAREER STATISTICS TABLE, he has 151 premier league assists to his name, I hope these Links help: http://www.premiersoccerstats.com/epl.html# (open up the page, click on records, then player all-time, next view assists or goals category). Also this other link shows how many number of assists he has in each premier league season: http://soccernet.espn.go.com/players/stats?id=8941&cc=5739 (the number of assists is under the letter A in the tabel which means assists).

The reason I think you should include Lampard's assists is because I've season on Francesc Fabregas's and Lionel Messi's wikipedia page's, Career statistics table, they're number of assists are included as well as goals and appearances.

Football 40

You removed the section about the "Football 40" from the List of world records in athletics as it is not a legitimate track event. So stipulated. However on this side of the pond, there are a lot of people who do not know the difference and I think the appropriate disclaimer, as I had written it, should be in the article as it existed under non-standard events. Its a common comparison here. Lots of people here in the U.S. come to Wikipedia seeking that information and should get that perspective. We are a major information source. Some meet directors even include such events for promotional purposes--the Millrose Games had one this year. Its not corrupt. there was nothing underhanded/negative about it. It was totally open. it wasnt a bribe, but a stipend. I forget how it was passed off. I appreciate your efforts to improve the articles on track and field-related topics. However, I reverted your edit to the Athletics (track and field) page in particular. Creating a new disambig page at this title is contrary to the disambiguation guidelines, because it is a case of "incomplete disambiguation"; that is, an ambiguous title followed by a parenthetical qualifier that results in a title that is still ambiguous. The disambiguation page at Athletics already covers the same territory. Also, please note that dozens of templates and well over 10,000 other articles contain links to "Athletics (track and field)". Running: requested article

Road relay. Among others there has been a World Championship in road relay, but does the total distance have to be 42 km? The country I live in has several cross country and road relays in the spring (April/May). The largest event had 34,300 contestants in 1993 (and a prestigious Elite Category) and is about 18 km. :) I am a little "extra-pounds" kind of guy. I used to run till 2007. Approximately, 3 km everyday. Started running in last month again. Just building upon my stamina now. Logging little less than 2 km, four days a week. I know this is peanuts. Although, i have stamina for more but if i increase my run-distance to my stamina just now, i'll get the sprained calf. Re:undoing of revision on Commonwealth Games

Hi SFB - though I agree with your undoing of the revision which removed the UK from the list of multiple-hosting nations, I think i can see the editor who removed that's point. If the CG regard the four countries within the UK as separate nations (which they do if the teams are anything to go by), are we right to regard games held in Cardiff, Edinburgh and Manchester as having been held in the same country? It's a quibbling point of definition, but perhaps it's one which needs discussion somewhere? Grutness...wha?
