Pending World Records

I wholeheartedly agree with your format addition to pending world records. I think I have stated this before, elsewhere: I think we should go one step further and continue to list the officially ratified records until the new record is, in fact, ratified. In the case of ratifiable records, ones that pass through a process, that would more properly reflect their status. In the case of World Bests in non-standard events (a category I added a long time ago), then there is no governing body or process to account for, which turns Wikipedia into being perhaps the primary worldwide source for unifying those claims. Question about an article title

Hey, I have a question about Alexander The Great Marathon. Shouldn't it be capitalized as Alexander the Great Marathon (a redirect), since the race is named after Alexander the Great, and the "the" in his name isn't capitalized? Help?

I'm trying to help with the DD copyright cleanup effort but I'm not sure if I'm doing it right. On the list of possibly affected articles do I use the X if there is copyvio or the Y? And what if I think the copyvio is foundational and should be removed (which appears to be the case with the Charles Daniels (swimmer) article. Agreed. The check is green. Green usually means "good" or "go". The X is red which is often translates as, "bad".

Zersenay Tadese article

GregorB brought up an issue on Zersenay Tadese's talk page. In regards to the 20 km WR, I think there is an error in the text. It says, "(Tadese) significantly revised Haile Gebrselassie's four-year-old 20 km world mark to 55:21." Didn't the prior WR belong to Samuel Wanjiru (with a time of 55:31)? That's according to to IAAF's 20 Kilometres All Time list. I'm not an expert on athletics so I wanted to run it through you before I made any significant changes to the article.Philipmj24 (talk) 14:39, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

I'm puzzled why you want to include links to nonexistent articles, like the ones to the La Jolla Half Marathon and the America's Finest City Half Marathon you added to the San Diego article. I'm not offended or anything, I just would like to know what your reasoning is - because I usually delete redlinks when I see them. Is there a Wikipedia policy on redlinks? OK, it's nominated. I also added the source of the name "America's Finest City" - it's a kind of unofficial motto or official nickname for the city of San Diego. I'm not a runner but I have a personal interest in the AFC half-marathon. The route goes pretty much past my front door, and I have been organizing a neighborhood water station for it for the past 17 years. A history note: this may not be findable in Reliable Sources, but I'm pretty sure it started out with the Lung Association actually organizing it - but it got too big for them to manage, so the race director Neil Finn spun it off to a separate organization, Neil Finn Sports Management. Initially, I reverted your edit that unblanked a cyclist article(Miguel Ubeto) because I figured you weren't aware of what was going on, but now I see that you've done a ton of these and clearly have the support of others. I am confused though, because the article I reverted was mostly a list that was copied exactly from the source, so how does that not constitute copyvio? The IAAF, African Athletics, Athletics Weekly all seem to be using this form of his name now, representing a change from the name reported in 2009 and early 2010. Sometimes you do find that the biographies do not have consistency with current name usage as the IAAF will make an update the name very infrequently (usually only marriages etc). By the way, regarding Wolf-alpha, you are exactly right. My bet is that in 15 years Wikipedia will be an alpha look alike, and also something like the IBM Watson. There is no doubt that those technologies are ready - in fact have been for 20 years. I am going to suggest some of these on the Village pump (once again) as a start towards quality. So if you look on there in a few days you will see it. My idea is to start with cross-article quality checks, then gradually add bots that maintain data, then move towards the DB architecture. I had suggested the DB for Wikimedia on VP some time ago and it is too far from the Wiki-culture now, so one needs to ease into it. Cheers. History2007 (talk) 05:46, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

Didier Drogba's wikipedia page

Can you note down Drogba's playing style in a paragraph at the top of his wikipedia page and put his premier league assists as well as league goals in career statistics table, for example:

Athlete, Athletics, etc.

To start, I am an academic born and raised in the U.S.A. I am disappointed and confused about how Wikipedia labels and handles "Athlete," "Athletics," etc. In my erudite understanding, "Sportsman" or Sportsperson is generally a hunter/angler/trapper/outdoorsman, and not representative of the page it labels; the fact that the introduction on Sportsperson describes the etymology of "Athlete" seems to reinforce that this page is mislabeled (should be "Athlete" and should have more references). I believe it is a clear sign of failure that a Google search for "Athlete" lands one on a disambiguation page. In the U.S., the term "Athletics" includes American Football, baseball, alpine skiing, etc.; it is rare-- if not archaic-- to exclusively label track and field events as "Athletics." The Athletics (sport) introduction discusses a lack of need for expensive equipment (exclusively track & field), but links to the Ancient Olympic Games which included pugilism. I have read the discussions, and get more frustrated at what has been discussed, especially the Talk:Athletics_(sport) page referencing the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica. How is that relevant ? I have energy for a major overhaul, and am happy to be a part of the project. How do we gain consensus so we can move forward ? TommyKirchhoff (talk) 15:36, 27 March 2011 (UTC)

Athletics (overview)

Hi SFB. I think Sportsperson should be narrowed to the hunter/angler/trapper because somewhere in the French etymology of "sport" is the context of "venery." I think parts of Sportsperson could be put into an article on Athlete, which should be its own page. I find comfort in old dictionaries; my 1974 Funk & Wagnalls dictionary defines athlete as, "One trained in acts or physical feats of agility, as in sports." It defines Sport as "1. That which amuses in general; diversion; pastime. 2. A particular game or play pursued for diversion; esp. an outdoor or athletic game, as baseball, tennis, swimming, etc." I believe the Greek word "athlos" (ἄθλος), meaning "contest" or "task," coupled with the global vernacular uses of Athletic, Athlete and Athleticism lend credence to the concept that the early Olympic games define athletics. I admit my bias, synthesis and original work here: Athletics (sports) and Pugilism and Wrestling and Track and field and Chariot racing are all to be considered Athletics. As far as I've ever considered the term, animals have been separate and distinct from the ideas of athletes/athletics. I would consider it highly unusual, if not plain incorrect, for someone to describe a greyhound race as an example of athletes competing in a form of athletics. While it might make sense on a purely semantic basis, I don't think it rings true in terms of actual usage.

While I can totally understand that the definitions you cite above would simplify the matter, I think they do not reflect either the modern or international usages (something which is an important and somewhat unique consideration for Wikipedia articles). I cannot speak for the US, but the primary (perhaps sole) usage of sportsperson in the UK and Australia is to describe a person who competes in sports. Its ubiquity is such that it has dedicated sections in British law.

This is why I think it would be useful to deal with the more specific idea of the athlete (athleticism) as part of the broader definition of sportspeople. The sportsperson (as in the huntsman) probably does not warrant a stand-alone article but could be better dealt with at the undeveloped sport hunting – note the tendency on Wikipedia to deal with the people as part of the overall topic (e.g. baseball player).

I think Athletics (overview) is a good start for that topic – when I wrote athletic sports I had not really considered that that concept of athletics might not necessarily be tied to sports. Is non-competitive weight training a form of athletics, for example? I think the title needs to be adjusted though. Perhaps to athletic activity or a different "Athletics (-)" disambiguator? I'm going to suggest a move for "Athletics (sport)" to "Athletics (Olympic sport)" to reflect that that current title is not really a help in distinguishing the topic from athletic sports in general.

On a side-note, I think the meaning of "sport" has changed in the last forty years, largely in response to the fact that for many thousands of people it is not a pastime, but their job. I think the public mindset has altered in that sports (especially popular ones) are considered as a potential career path for those with a degree of talent. SFB 10:48, 9 April 2011 (UTC)

Sport does get tricky in its usage here and there. I offer what I know and read and hear and study, but support your decisions completely. I think you've done great work on this project. I have made some changes to redirects to differentiate between Athletics (overview) (which denotes competition) and Physical fitness, which encompasses non-competitive "exercise for aesthetics." There is a slippery slope in North America in that the military consider their Physical training fitness; but that in a macro sense, any form of fighting (even training) could be considered competitive. Hi SFB, A few thoughts... Athletics (sport) is confusing to me; but I think Athletics (Olympic sport) would be even more confusing. Perhaps Athletics (overview) could take a name change; other names I considered were Athletics (macro), Athletics (broad) and Athletics (competitive), with the last being the weakest. If you have reviewed Athletics (overview), would you be so kind as to remove the "new page" tag ? I think you make an important point that sport has become much more than a pastime, and that athletics in general create a number of careers. Athletic (activity) might imply more of a pastime connotation. I believe the name should reflect a broadness of scope, and that it is all of the sports, training methods, athletes, coaches, equipment, funding, etc. that facilitate performance in competition-- something strong. NCAA lists

I'm game to add to the NCAA lists but I've got limited time right now and a huge backlog of Masters stuff coming out of the recent World Masters Athletics Championships which I attended in person. Long term, I do refer to that kind of information constantly, as you might note in my contributions, so it is certainly a useful piece of information and a useful function for WP to bring out to the open. NCAA is the logical step for the majority of American athletes in their progression to Olympic success and many international athletes also show in those results. You've found the site where the stuff is listed but gee, they sure do make it hard to find. WP on top of a google search would be much better. Golf list articles

I either think we need to have all the images or the infobox, and just not cherry pick one lone image to put in the lead like NapHit is wanting to do. I am fine with all or no images at all. Sogelau Tuvalu

You deleted the, I'll call it mitigating factor, mention of Sogelau Tuvalu being a shot putter and being entered in the meet on those grounds. I am contacting IAAF officials for comment as to why they have repeatedly forced these, I'll call them lesser athletes, to participate outside of their discipline in order to participate in the World Championships. His 15.66 is a joke worldwide like thisand we should explain that he is not the best 100 metre runner in his country (national record 10.81), but was selected as the best shot putter who was forced by IAAF to run in the wrong event. I take the IAAF's qualification standards document at its word. They should be allowed to enter one athlete of each gender, nothing about unless they don't achieve the standard in the shot put. IAAF has had a American Samoan shot putter run the 100 in the past. I'm trying to get IAAF to explain why they ignore their own published rules (which I have linked into the qualification standards article).
