Generally, yes. WP:DRAFT says that anyone, including users who are not logged in, may create and edit drafts. Of course, people might get annoyed if you come in and rewrite a draft that they've been working on alone, but generally it's perfectly alright to amble in and make some fixes. • Talk:Operation Desert (German fuel project)#Requested move 29 August 2023 — To explain your technical request (as I should have done in a reply before carrying out the request), the reason you couldn't move the page yourself was that the new title was a redirect to a different page (not the page being moved to the redirect), so the pagemover flag "delete-redirect" would be needed to overwrite that redirect. In general, any chain of moves B → C and A → B requires a technical request/pagemover (see WP:Page mover#Moves involving primary topics).
• Talk:Tyla (South African singer)#Requested move 12 September 2023 — The same situation apparently happened here that day. Only the second move was made, even though your closure would indicate that there was a consensus for both moves (though one of the three participants disagreed with that). I'll move that page – unless the closure needs to be clarified.
• Talk:Georgia (country)#Requested move 29 September 2023 — WP:RMCI's early closure instructions say to only close an RM as "withdrawn" when nobody else has supported the move. However, I think that closure would be okay expressed instead as a WP:BOLD WP:INVOLVED WP:SNOW closure (with bold signaling that others can revert the involved closure if they disagree).

Geostubs

As you've probably noticed, I reverted a batch of WP:BLARs you did on Polish places. We give editors a lot of latitude with BLAR, but I think there's so little to say about it is really pushing it as a rationale, since it directly contradicts WP:NPLACE, WP:NODEADLINE and WP:STUB. I guess this is related to the VPI thread you made and quickly (and if, I may say, wisely) withdrew. Geographic stubs are a hot topic at the moment and if you're going to wade into those depths, I think it's important you're aware that not everyone may share your assumptions. For example, many editors, myself include, would disagree that an article with only the name, the coordinates, and a bit of database-style information on a place is not a useful or viable stub.

I've also just noticed that when I granted you NPR I said it was for a month but didn't actually click that button. I guess we'll say it's permanent now, then! – Joe (talk) 15:25, 9 October 2023 (UTC)

I'm on your side. I want a quality encyclopedia as much as you do. I'm totally open to criticism of the page. It's just that it's unclear what it is that you want cited, as there isn't much prose to speak of on there.

Since this is a topics list, comprised almost entirely of links to articles corresponding to the topics, the reason for inclusion of each link is easily verified by clicking on the link. Any link not serving its navigation function would immediately be discovered upon doing so.

Because of this, links in outlines are rarely challenged nor are they likely to be challenged, which satisfies the key tenet of the verifiability policy. This requirement is included in the second paragraph of the policy.

Note, that in other navigation structures, such as navigation footers, navigation sidebars, see also sections, and categories, citations are not the norm, because verification of includability is achieved by simply clicking on the links. The same thing applies to the linked topics in outlines.

If you think of links in a topic tree as headings, with the body of each of these headings in the article or list linked to, the navigation function of outlines begins to make sense.

As for completeness, keep in mind that the entirety of Wikipedia is incomplete, and that completeness is not a criteria for being in article space, otherwise we would not have stubs. I slapped a {{construction}} tag on it until I was done, and somebody else came along and reviewed it.

The list links either directly to the articles on Wikipedia about reptiles, or to lists with those articles listed. It is now an integrated part of the list navigation system, tying together existing link resources: lists containing reptilian links, and reptile-related articles not included on those lists. As I come across new links and lists that pertain, I'll be sure to add those too.

The outline is now beyond stub status, which makes it subject to Wikipedia's deletion policies. If you believe there are serious problems with the outline, feel free to tag it for AfD. Though there is no need, because, if you have any further concerns about the outline, I'll be happy to address them, via editing and discussion. If you spot any dubious parent-offspring relationships in the hierarchy of the outline, please let me know, and I'll fix them straight away, including with citations, if necessary.

Before draftifying an article, it's wise to check out the experience level of the article creator. If they have been active on the project for many years, they probably are in the process of creating and referencing an article. Draftifying works best when you are moving articles mistakenly placed in main space by new editors who are less experienced. Experienced content creators often work directly in main space, bypassing Draft space and so their articles might seem unfinished if you come across them. But they generally know what they are doing. Prods on islands

Hello Edward-Woodrow -- I've deprodded a series of prods from you on islands; my reading of WP:GEONATURAL "If a Wikipedia article cannot be developed using known sources, information on the feature can instead be included in a more general article on local geography. For example, a river island with no information available except name and location should probably be described in an article on the river." is that there is no problem with having the material covered in a subtopic article, with a redirect from the minor feature title. This makes sense, but the problem is where to merge to? Most of these islands are so insignificant, any detailled mention of them in a higher-level article would seem to give undue weight. Besides, detailled mentions are hard to find, given that the stubs under discussion are a) extremely short and b) unlikely to be expanded much.

Take Brazier Rock. I suppose it could be merged into Auckland Region#Geography, but that would seem weird and undue. We could add it to List of islands of New Zealand, I guess. Edward-Woodrow • talk 12:12, 12 October 2023 (UTC)

Honestly, I've had a few too many experiences where I mess up with a semi-automated tool with mildly disasterous consequences. I wouldn't feel comfortable using something like AWB (yet, at least) Edward-Woodrow • talk 12:55, 14 October 2023 (UTC)

Understood. With your reservations in mind, you might be interested to know that while most users apply AWB to make edits for them, AWB has some powerful non-invasive features that are useful without having it edit anything:

1. List maker - make lists from a wide range of Wikipedia's page types, including special pages
2. List compare - applies set theory to 2 lists, so that you can get the items on just one list or the other, the items that appear on both lists, or all the items on both lists without duplicates
3. List alphabetizer - all lists that it makes for you are alphabetized, unless you change the settings.
4. Database scanner - my favorite feature. Allows regex searches of the entirety of site without choking. Very useful, when you want to find every single occurrence of a phrase, or absolutely everything on a particular topic. The remaining items below require registration to be activated...
5. The entire app is a very sophisticated search engine, with much greater control over output than the search engine on Wikipedia. It accepts as many search queries as you want at the same time, applied in a single search, including what to exclude, so you can filter searches down as much as you need to. You can use it to find every page that meets your criteria and show them to you one at a time. It'll automatically skip those that don't match.
6. The ability to do dry runs. You can see how a job will be implemented, without saving anything, by using the "Skip" button for each page.
7. The app includes a diff display for viewing changes, and an editor window to see what the article's modified source looks like. So you can inspect the changes from a job without saving anything.
8. Auto page loader for manual editing - if you have a list of pages you want to edit, you can have this program load pages without it making any changes to them, making them available one-at-a-time for you to edit personally. When you are done editing one page, it automatically loads the next page for you.

The first four features listed above, and some others not on this list, can be used without registering. That's right, you can explore the tool without signing up. This is its offline mode, which has zero chance of changing anything. I highly recommend that you download it and take a look.

The tool itself is fascinating, and is worth exploring even if you don't edit any pages with it.

You might consider applying for approval now, so that you have all the non-invasive features available, and so that you are already cleared if and when you decide to make the leap and have it edit for you.

JWB is nice, because it is platform independent, and can therefore work on Linux systems and in just about any browser. I'm a bit perplexed by your close of Wikipedia:Redirects_for_discussion/Log/2023 October 14#INTDABLINK of redirects from incomplete disambiguation. For one, there was an outstanding delete !vote besides the nominator, so I don't see this as a WP:SNOW situation. Narky Blert's speedy keep was for the evaluation of incoming links, which was subsequently completed. I do agree with Bkonrad that But on the other hand, what is there to evaluate? and agree that this would be an all or nothing delete/keep outcome. Breaking up into smaller chunks would draw that out too long. I would like to lodge a delete !vote, but I was never given that opportunity due to the early closure. Finally, the rationale for your closure is flawed. With tools like WP:AWB and WP:DBATCH (if closure is delete), it is actually very simple to implement a mass closure like this. @Tavix I'm sorry, but I have to very strongly disagree here. There are far too many redirects here to reasonably evaluate in one go and this reopening is just wasting everybody's time. I'm only sorry that I didn't see your message here before Edward reopened the discussion. If the close had been "keep" on the merits that would be a different matter, but this was a procedural keep. Creating categories

Hi, I pinged you about not adding multiple parent categories at Category:Attacks in France in the 1990s. On closer inspection, I see that you did create the page with two parent categories, but Category:Attacks in Europe in the 1990s did not exist, so Bearcat removed that one. It would have been better if either of you had shortened it to e.g. Category:Attacks in the 1990s which did exist. Categories can't be deleted through CSD until they have been emptied so I have removed the CSD tag from this one. If you are going to close CFD discussions, you need to handle the articles/pags in the category being discussed or set it up so that User:JJMC89 bot III handles the recategorization of articles. If you have questions about this, I recommend you ask Marcocapelle who is very experienced in CFDs and emptying categories that are designated to be deleted. CFDs can be very complicated and even a lot of administrators avoid closing them so please make sure all of the "Ts" are crossed and "Is" are dotted. Thank you. Liz ^{Read! But typically, after categories have been emptied (either by requesting that JJMC89 bot III handle this duty or the closer handling it) , I believe they are tagged CSD G6 with a link to the CFD discussion. But Marco would know, he seems to have the system down flawlessly and has always been helpful when I've asked him questions about CFD. WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Well Ca, the last reviewer said that There is not much to say about the group from the provided sources. They also commented that I don't see why this can't be merged to Kakadu National Park instead and maybe you can create a more general spin-off article about just dispute between the mining lobby and enviromentalists in Kakadu National Park, which seems notable to me. Socks

Hi - regarding this series of edits. First, the talk page of a blocked sock whp has no business editing here is not a great place to have a discussion about the merits or otherwise of rolling back their edits. If you are going to harangue hard-working administrators about clean up they've done, you should do it on their own talk pages.

Second, admins who work SPI, and who come across the sock of an account that is known to have had multiple issues in the past with a particular type of editing, are faced with a choice. Do we carefully review every one of their contributions (which in this case number in the thousands), weighing whether or not to revert? That would as always be the ideal option, but it would take hours of time, which would obviously result in other cases not being attended to. (Have you looked at the backlog at SPI recently?) The choice that many of us take, for reasons of expediency as well as to discourage continued socking, is to simply revert them all. They should not have been editing, those categorisations should not have been made - we put things back the way they were before they created their sock. This is discussed in more detail at WP:BANREVERT. Note the language in the first paragraph there: changes that are obviously helpful... ...can be allowed to stand, not should be allowed to stand. When in doubt (and they are most certainly in doubt for anything the user in question has done), they should be reverted.

Now, if you want to spend the time it would take to review their contributions fully, and are willing to stand by them yourself as improvements to the project, you are welcome to reinstate any of them that you see fit. That would take exactly the same amount of time as the checks that you seem to think Bbb23 should have carried out. I for one believe that that would be a better use of your time than insulting people with insulting, snide, sarcastic messages. Girth Summit _(blether) 08:13, 10 November 2023 (UTC)

I don't think you can, but it's not like its a blemish on your record or something. If someone is really looking your contribs that closely, then they'll notice you didn't write the article, and no-one scrutinizes other people's XTools like that. I have checked further and I found out his content in the article space and draftspace are technically the same, meaning he had copy paste into the page before he made any major changes needed to the article. A pinch of salt

Hello, Edward. I saw your message to me suggesting salting some titles repeatedly created by a sockpuppeteer. However, my experience is that it is actually unhelpful to salt titles in this situation. Since the person in question has created several pages several times, coming back with new sockpuppets after each one is blocked, they are almost certainly going to come back and do the same again, and the only effect of salting would be to force them to find new titles for the pages. We can easily watchlist the old titles, but we can't watchlist every conceivable new title they may possibly think up, so salting stands to make it harder to catch them next time. I have seen that happen quite often over the years: a persistent sockpuppeteer has been repeatedly caught fairly soon, until some administrator decides to salt titles, and then they create sockpuppets which manage to stay undetected for long periods. Also, you can't put the genie back in the bottle: once they realise that making up new titles each time helps them to evade scrutiny, they carry on doing that even if no more salting takes place, so just salting even one title can be very counterproductive. I think that for the duration of the conflict, the map should be displayed in the infobox, as it rapidly changes and informs the readers of the ongoing situation. However, once the conflict is over, predictably with Israel in full control of Gaza, I think it will be more appropriate to add a gallery of images to the infobox. Hey @Cremastra. I wish you well on your perm request (though it would be frowned upon for me to go post '''Support'''). There is one part that I wanted to ask about (both now and during the previous request). To my understanding, the vast majority of "rename" closures at CfD are implemented by the Bot via WT:CFD/W (for non-admins) or WP:CFD/W (for admins). Is that your understanding as well? I think the most common CfD closer is Qwerfjkl, and they manually moved only 2 categories in 2023 (log). Are you looking to work on WP:CFD/W/M (manual implementation)? (I'm asking on this page because this sort of thing seems more pointed on a user talk page. You can delete this or move it elsewhere.) SilverLocust 💬 01:22, 14 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi SilverLocust. I'm not 100% certain about how CfD works yet (hence I hope to help there sometime in the future), but I would probably help at WT:CFD/W/M. In the past, when closing CfD's as merge, I did it myself using Cat-a-lot and no-one complained, but I plan to familiarize myself further with how CfD works. Sloppy editing at Anguinae

I've just had to clean up some sloppy editing you made at Anguinae a few days ago, which shows a lack of care. Regarding the 48-49 number, which you took as "citation needed", the source clearly stated The divergence between the Gerrhonotinae in North America and Anguinae in Europe is suspected to have occurred after a dispersal across the Thulean land bridge and before 48.6 million years when Anguinae fossils begin appearing at multiple sites in Europe. You also added "They are believed not to be monophyletic", when the source actually said According to Sullivan (1987), the subfamily Anguinae is not monophyletic, which is not the same at all, and that study was published nearly 40 years ago. According to the recent 2019 paper "Phylogenetic relationships and divergence dating in the Glass Lizards (Anguinae)" which was quoted for the evolution section: Within the Anguidae, the subfamily Anguinae consist of a monophyletic assemblage of elongated legless grass-swimming ecomorphs, so your claim that "They are believed not to be monophyletic" is hardly well supported enough to put in wikivoice is it? @Rosbif73: Sure. Per WP:NCROY, we should disambiguate when the title is ambiguous; and "oppose" !voters have, in my view, adequately proven that the title is somewhat ambiguous, not only with other monarchs named Anne, (besides Queens-consorts) but also with Queen Anne Architecture (which can easily be referred to as "Queen Anne": “Is that house Edwardian?” “Of course not, it's Queen Anne.”). Thus, I think there is a rough consensus against the move. (Of course, if you disagree with me, there are steps you can take.) 🌺 Cremastra (talk) 20:33, 28 February 2024 (UTC)

Per NCROY, we should disambiguate only for monarchs whose common name is ambiguous or not the primary meaning (my emphasis). Only two opposers doubted that Anne is the primary topic, and evidence in favour of primacy was provided. You don't address that aspect in your closing rationale. In the discussion, both sides acknowledge ambiguity. The RfC is primarily about whether Queen of Great Britain is the primary topic for the article title Queen Anne. The close does not address this at all. It does not demonstrate a clear understanding of the discussion and of the WP:P&G that is applicable. There is also the spirit and intent of this RfC that has been referred to. In the response immediately above, you would state: it's unclear what the PTOPIC for the title "Queen Anne" should be. There is significant discussion regarding this and substantial evidence presented. In seriousness…at a venue like MfD no one is likely to take offense at remarks like that…but in a CT area it could be different. Best to spread positive vibes.

(In this case blanking had not occurred to me as a solution. We all overlook such brilliant solutions sometimes lol)

Thanks for signing up for EB1911 verification. I see your edit to Arthur Nikisch; it would be more complete if you could add the volume and page parameters (in this case volume 19, page 690). Long ago there was consensus, which I can no longer find, that this would help verification even if there is a wikisource version now.

I'd like to draw your attention to the standard guidelines at the top of the project's detailed list pages, for example Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles/1911 verification/A5 (which has the Nikisch link). They are actually more up to date than the more generic Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles/1911 verification.

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reopening RfA

I'm not going to get into an edit war, because obviously the early close is no longer uncontroversial, but I think this was very poorly judged. Early closes citing WP:NOTNOW or WP:SNOW have been a routine part of RfA for as long as it has existed. You only have to look through the RfA archives to see that such closes are common, do not require the candidate to withdraw first, and do not require a 'crat (in fact, they rarely involve one). They are done as a favour to the candidate, to spare them going through a vote that has no chance of succeeding. I strongly encourage you to consider self-reverting, quickly. – Joe (talk) 13:20, 30 April 2024 (UTC)
