Rangeblock question

Hi Berean Hunter - Did you mean to hard block this IP range ? Did a CU do a check to see what kind of collateral damage that may cause? I have what appears to be an unrelated account who cannot log in to edit and is requesting an unblock at UTRS. Hi Ponyo, I've changed the block settings to allow accounts to edit so they shouldn't have a problem now. I started to block the latest IP they were using and converted to a rangeblock after looking at it further. Thank you for letting me know,

I saw you extended my block of 24.177.121.137 (talk · contribs) to two weeks because he used another IP. Did the user do something abusive with that other IP that I missed? He was using it to edit war over the messages being left on the previous IP talk page. Where it might be questionable using the same IP on one's talk while responding, using a different IP for such behavior isn't acceptable.

Meh. Seems pretty molehill to me, given that there was clearly no intent to deceive, as the first IP stated quite openly that he was the one removing the content. "User:TheMetallican" and sockpuppets

Hello, you were involved in a (now archived) sockpuppetry case involving the above user. While I never had any direct dealings with the above user, a sockpuppet of the above user added an intrusive edit to the Bay Area thrash metal page [1] and shortly thereafer, an autoconfirm, (User:FunnyPatrol99), is persistently trying to sustain the same edit [2], [3]. Does a new sock case need to be opened (I'm unfamiliar with the previous) or can this be dealt with in another, perhaps quicker way? Thanks, --Danteferno (talk) 22:26, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

This probably isn't relevant to a decision on the unblock request, but I was curious. The 24. IP address is apparently assigned by Charter Communications in Madison, Wisconsin. There apparently is no geolocate function for an IPv6 address, but the address appears to be owned by Verizon in Bedminster, NJ. Does that mean that the IPv6 address is assigned to a user in New Jersey, or am I interpreting this incorrectly? Assuming 24. and the IPv6 address are the same person, I would've expected to see another dynamic IP address in the same range as the 24. address.--Bbb23 (talk) 23:35, 28 September 2012 (UTC)

I've left comment on the IP talk page. The switching of IP addresses is not legit. (Bbb23, no, it just means that the company that owns the IPv6 allocation is located in NJ but the user can be anywhere in their network.)

Mmmm, bacon....

Talk page stalkers should be very jealous.

Had some of that red hot sausage with eggs for breakfast, looking forward to ribs for dinner. All that stuff came out pretty good, but I still can't believe how insanely good the smoked bacon came out. That was a very good idea. I like your idea of adding a chunk of onion in the center and a little garlic. I would imagine soaking it in traditional barbecue sauce would also be good. Or teriyaki. Or oregano/rosemary/thyme. Or leave a gap in the center and put in a chunk of sharp cheddar after smoking. We could probably fill the smoker up with nothing but variations of the the bacon if we were so inclined. Oh yes! They are quite savory and delicious. I think they would also work well as one of several items on kabob skewers too...hmmm, bacon, onion, shrimp, sweet red bell pepper chunks, tenderloin and pineapple; that combination cries out for teriyaki sauce. I wonder if minced garlic would hold if wrapped up in and throughout the bacon. An extra dusting of garlic and onion powders for good measure...

Yes! ...and they go very well with brown ale. These bacon rolls were hickory-smoked but I imagine smoking in apple wood would give a good flavor too. Those in the photo are whole slices rolled but Dennis suggested cutting them in half before rolling and I agree this would be better for allowing the heat through to smoke more crisply. Bacon goes with everything...you could even make tofu good if you wrapped it in bacon. :)

Beginning to wonder...

...whether we have a serious problem with User:Donaldecoho which we can no longer ignore. Check his recent talk page edits to get a picture, if you haven't been following. I've largely stayed out of the personal dispute, but the user is continuing to attack and belittle those with whom he disagrees. The battlefield mentality, incivility, and even competence of the user has made me feel we need to escalate this in some way. Per edits to Talk:Battle of Gettysburg I know you're an involved admin, so I'm not asking for direct action, but with Wikipedia:Wikiquette assistance inactive, I'm wondering the best way forward. This contribution to Amazon reviews seems way out of line. There's a bullying here which concerns me. BusterD (talk) 23:40, 7 October 2012 (UTC)

Yes, I started following this a few weeks ago and then saw some of this earlier today (still have open tabs). I saw the Amazon link this morning and I do find that disconcerting...until then, I wouldn't have considered myself involved because I was watching talk page behavior not related to Talk:Battle of Gettysburg. It is because he is mentioning Hal in the Amazon link that I would recuse from any admin role here and will encourage any other admins that see this thread to look into the situation. Here is a bit of a file that I had started on him including stale socking for behavioral considerations:

Donaldecoho was blocked 1 week on Oct. 3, 2011 for abusing multiple accounts. He immediately evaded his block as this IP and as this one.

Dressed weight

Just started, unreferenced after I redlinked it in Pig pickin'. Likely, it can be expanded to cover dressing as a form of butchering and then renamed, but we need an article on this concept and figured you could help me with this. No problem. Don't hesitate to be bold. My concern was just getting the basic concept covered. I've added a little on field dressing as a comparison. Again, it might even change names with a redirect, but the idea of this as a mid stage of butchering is notable. Even a section on what they do with the parts that are undesirable (hot dogs, chorizo and bologna I assume) might fit. I dunno, not married into it. I've replied on the talk page there, but the carcass weight means something different in the sources than we are using it here at wikipedia. Carcass weight is the weight of the entire carcass, undressed. Then you have dressed weight, then you have retail cut weight. The last source I just added has a full breakdown for hogs. I see "dressed weight" more than "carcass weight", but my searching has likely been more limited than yours. On an unrelated note, Wikipedia:IPs are not human is something I've been considering for a while, and now just started. Very rough, but the whole IPs are human thing is a bit too much and not accurate, needing some balance. Your input would be highly desired, and arguably you are more qualified to write it anyway. Oh, I don't have a preference over the terms; I was mentioning the carcass weight issue because it looks to be the industry term (it is further sub-divided into Hot Carcass Weight and Cold Carcass Weight) and those may have different legal definitions in different nations as well as animal dependent industries. I was worried about getting it right when I realize that these are industry terms and I'm not qualified in that industry. I have field-dressed before but usually let a butcher finish the processing for me. It has been quite a while, too. :) I'm not sure about the merge and I'm not sure if this Ngram comparison tells us anything or not. They may well be candidates to remain as separate articles based on that.

Saudi Arabia Semi-Protection

I see you put this in place until 21 October. Do you think there is any chance of it being made permanent? The vast majority of IP or red-linked editor edits are either not constructive (blanking etc) or typically relate to the old chestnuts of adding "Allah" into the Shahada or changing Persian Gulf to Arabian. I had noticed what you are talking about and hope to begin discouraging them with increasing levels of protection. Permanent would be rare and would likely need a consensus but I am willing to increase protection times if they return to the same behavior again after protection expires..1 month, 3 months, etc.

It would be good to see what happens. The increase in protection time is to deter potential damage so we would need to justify it.

Actually your name was mentioned in the investigation and when I used a script which gathered your name from that report I accidentally tagged you...I had confused the closely-named PitYacker2 sock. I used the same script to block the other socks which is why I know that my tagging was an accident since I didn't block you by mistake. I have reverted that tagging and I apologize for my error and any inconvenience that may have caused you.

User:Metalvayne and blocking/topic ban

Hi Berean Hunter. A week ago, you blocked User:Metalvayne because he used a sockpuppet to get around his topic ban, where he's not allowed to edit anything related to genre or musical style on music pages. You blocked him for a week, with his block ending on late October 16. By October 17, he had already right away broken his topic ban, with this edit. Now, the edit was non-controversial, but he's already been warned that he's not supposed to edit music genre at all, (See here, and he even acknowledged that he knows this here.) Barbecue

Been a hell of week, sick parents and the like. We need to do some Q before Tgiving. I'm still eating on some of that last batch. Obviously not the bacon, that didn't last a day. Might need to do one full smoke of nothing but bacon variations. 10 pounds of smoked bacon should make a nice photo as well. I'm up for it. I started down the path of making the SC style mustard-based golden sauce this weekend. I didn't keep it very authentic but ended up with a excellent variation. I will be tweaking that recipe for future use. I slow-cooked tenderloin in it and now there are no leftovers. :)

Don't think I've tried SC style. By the way, the tenderloin is excellent smoked. You make a bowl out of foil, and smoke it with the fat side up on the top rack. It makes a ton of juice, but you keep it with the loin. Very, very tasty stuff. Might have to do one of those next time. You need to bring more dishes, some of this stuff is sloppy. I still need to do a brisket the night before you come down, let it slow cook in the oven overnight after smoking. Then we can just do ribs and bacon and the loin when you get here. Good news, No trainer is necessary for the role of patrolling admin which is what I was referring to. Only clerk trainees need a trainer; there is a wait list for that role here.

Admins and non-admin patrollers alike are needed to investigate, supply further evidence and advance the cases. You may want to to watchlist several cases and just follow along for now until such time that you are comfortable helping out. You will also find that your new ability to see a user's deleted contribs is helpful in evaluating evidence in some cases.

Thank you. That is correct so you would want to cite this work when copying sections and it would be okay. There is another matter, however, as you are copying his references incompletely. Cites such as "<ref>Seir, i, 624, note</ref> are his references but they have not been carried forward such as to have context in the current article. Who is Seir? He hasn't been mentioned anywhere. These references would need to be cited more properly.

After doing the initial revdel, it was still showing up after refreshing the page and purging the cache so I went back and applied the tighter level. I don't know why it was still there as I hovered over the diff links.

But there are two pages---William Alexander Morgan and Gerry Patrick Hemming---when a link to my documentary is appropriate. I have video interviews with these men that are not available anywhere else, and they add to their respective histories in relation to Cuba. Hmmm. This may be something due to differences in OSs because I can't see what you mean either way. I'm using Firefox on Ubuntu. If I remove the header (along with the one you have here), it doesn't change anything in the page layout that I'm seeing when using preview. Only a few things at the top of the page are centered for me. What "centering" are you seeing?

Civil War and Language

Try not to revert edits without discussion, simply dismissing a point as nonsense. Goes against the Wikipedia policy of good faith editing, doesn't it? In any case, rather than argue with you, I'll just give you something to ponder: What's the difference between saying "A woman and her slave" and "A woman and her slaver" ? Other than the extra R. The former humanizes the slaveholder and objectifies the enslaved woman - a practice upon which slavery itself was predicated upon. The latter humanizes the enslaved woman and is blunt about the slaveholder. Why shouldn't we, in 2012, consider a shift in language to reflect that these were events that happened to people, perpetrated by other people, rather than defending the rights of slaveholders to be seen as human while the enslaved remain mere property. How do I unscrew this?

Hi Beran -

The Donald Leroy Truesdale article was written wrongly assuming Donald Truesdell was the birthname, so Truesdell redirects to Truesdale. The facts are the opposite, and Truesdell is the name at time of death, according to the Marines. I've corrected Truesdale, but it would seem right that the extant article should be Truesdell's. So how do I unscrew it so that Truesdale redirects to Truesdell? mmmm, bacon

It has been hard to find country-style ribs this fine lately.

Smoked a three pound block of bacon along with a bunch of ribs and some chicken wings. All of it came out awesome. All I added on the bacon was a light dusting of salt, I swear it is best that way. Smoked it a little longer including a half hour to finish on the top rack, with the fat down to drip away. omg. Even better than the first time. Baked the wings with Frank's sauce for an hour in the oven afterwards, amazingly good and tender. The bacon freezes really well too since it has more fat and less water, so the texture doesn't get messed up. Hi Berean Hunter, often when experienced editors are around the Teahouse for a while they become hosts. When you become a host, you learn about a few of the things about the Teahouse that are a little different from the rest of Wikipedia. You can find some of this information in the "host lounge". The most important thing (at least to me) is the idea of greeting people at the Teahouse and giving thorough friendly answers without using abbreviations (even when the asker seems not-so-new so that new users can understand the discussion). When I started WP some years ago, I found those to be helpful as I could remember them easily and they became intuitive but I suppose to some, it may look like alphabet soup. I actually just copied the format of the other citations on the Icemaker page and noticed that livingdirect.com and buzzle.com both cited their websites as sources, and linked directly to the articles from which the information was attained. I thought I was doing the same thing? (Oops, I just realized that LivingDirect.com links to their Wikipedia page), but is there any chance you could elaborate on what is or is not allowed in terms of external linking? I'm aware that all links are no follow, and I want to cite the source of the information provided. This page could use a lot of help, and I have a lot of information to provide, but I do not want to violate any of Wikipedia's terms or guidelines.

Hello AGRSIMP, I've tried to clean out some non-refs that link to company websites. Our standards for reliable sources require books, periodicals, journals, newspapers etc. but do not allow linking to assertions made at websites unless those sites are the official sites of published, vetted material. External linking has different standards but are only permitted in the External links section; linking externally within the body of the article is not permitted. See this about what not to link.

To find references, you may try using Google books. Ice Machines Plus will not be acceptable for linking or as a ref just as some of the other sites you mentioned are not suitable. You should also read this about having a conflict of interest before proceeding. Cheers,

Hey, Berean. This user is requesting unblock (you'd blocked them as a suspected sock of User:Tirgil34, and I'm not entirely certain that this is actually Tirgil. The IP range he's editing from is very dynamic, and I don't think that his admission to requesting unblock on a sock-blocked IP is enough evidence to block him. I checked that IP, and there are a large number of accounts there, but none are blocked, none appear related to one another, and none are Riversides. On the other hand, I can't prove that Riversides is not Tirgil, particularly since he has no actual content edits yet. Either way, would you mind taking a look at this again, and possibly some of the IP blocks against this sockpuppeteer? As dynamic as this range is, I don't think they'll be terribly effective, and there's an awful lot of traffic to be placing rangeblocks. Hersfold ^(t/a/c) 04:21, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

I had a good time despite the whipping. :) I tried finishing out the bacon in the oven at 400 degrees for half an hour and it still wasn't as crisp as I was shooting for but it definitely improved it.

Hey, Berean, it looks like you're more back than not, so I'll hope you can answer a question for me. Take a look at this topic on my talk page. When I start to block User:128.68.97.56, the block form says: "The IP address 128.68.97.56 is blocked as a Tor exit node." What does that mean (I know a little about Tor purely based on our article)? Heh, I'm finally around but not getting around. Messed my leg up but hope that is short-lived because I need to get back up. I've been staying productive but not on Wiki. I'm supposed to cook for family this weekend but that may have to change depending whether the infection clears.

I'm wondering if the bacon shouldn't be somewhat flat and on its side in the smoker (like ribs turned on their sides in a rack). It would curl but would probably produce better end results. Another experiment to try... :).

Slow cook the fat out of it, leaving it lean and smokey. Didn't even think about doing that until I posted here, but that does sound interesting. Wonder if I could reverse the order, slow cook a shoulder in the oven for several hours and finish it in the smoker for two hours with the bacon over it. Something to think about. It looks like the user is trying incorrectly for a renaming possibly out of frustration. Since there are no contribs on that account, I don't see any illegitimate use; it would be interesting to see if they actually have control of that account since it was created on 26 October 2005 but I see that their own account goes back to 2006 so it is possible. I will be taking a closer look later...I see that things are a bit erratic.

"big.LITTLE" article capitalisation

Hi there,

I randomly noticed that you made a good copy-editing-related correction to an article that I had also edited. This gave me the idea that you might be a good person to weigh in on a rather fierce debate I've been involved in. There's no hurry, but if you ever get the time, here is the link: Talk:Big.LITTLE#Article Title - Capitalisation.

My point of view is that the article title should follow the MoS on capitalization (Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Trademarks), irrespective of what the majority of sources present (given that the majority of sources are technical blogs with little regard for copy editing). And in fact, the more reputable publications use the correct capitalisation (Big.little) anyway:

I even provided two links to tech-related articles that follow correct English capitalisation irrespective of the trademark:

However, as everybody else involved in the debate is a tech person, and not a journalist, they believe that we should disregard the manual of style, and simply follow the most common title usage (in accordance with the hundreds of cheap tech blogs writing about the subject).

At any rate, I've given up on them, as none of them have any interest in proper copy-editing or the MoS guidelines. They refuse to even read my comments.

Such similar ways of editing, protesting, and articles in common. The only difference I can see is that Metallican doesn't use profanity and become a hot head like Gunmetal. My guess is they are either the same guy playing an elaborate game or they know each other. Found it pretty weirldy conincidental that their socks edited the same article in the same day, not long after one of the socks was IP rangeblocked. Problem. And this has happened before (you're not the first to get them confused). The IPs definitely belong to Gunmetal Angel, the accounts that were blocked for socking belong to TheMetallican. This needs to be corrected on the SPI page. I was only commenting on how similar they are, but the IPs do distinguish them. Hmmm. Since I'm not privy to the checkuser's info and I presume that it could have played a role in his results, I would be reluctant to make changes myself. He cannot discuss the IPs publicly either.

The IPs I'm referring to are those that were blocked yesterday before I opened the last SPI request that ended up being TheMetallican. The IPs were Gunmetal, the accounts (not IPs) were TheMetallican. What you did was combine all the SPIs together with the end result being they all belonged to TheMetallican. The IPs that were rangeblocked are not TheMetallican. I came across an edit today that was exactly the same as one done a few days ago by one of the Gunmetal Angel IPs:[9] The IP originated from a T-Mobile cellphone. Which makes sense since the rangeblock has forced him to find other ways to edit that are not from his regular ISP. The ones you listed above look like they could belong to either GMA or TM, especially since they are genre changes. Using an IP outside the US is called using a proxy (I think). Album Ratings being removed.

I have recently added critic Lachlan J.'s scores to some albums, and these have been removed. I have been told that I have been self-promoting and soapboxing, but I don't believe this to be the case. All I have done is added and referenced the scores given to certain albums by Lachlan J. I have not posted any kind of opinion at all and I have not been promoting any kind of opinion or external site.

Howdy, and Happy New Year. I wanted to take exception to a reversion you made in the John Bell Hood article. Your stated reason "Rm fringe theory by isolated author that is qualified as "retired industrial construction company owner". Work not vetted by scholars." is quite arguable. I know the author personally (and in fact did the maps for his book) and although he does not have formal academic credentials, his profession should not be considered a negative factor on his scholarship. His publisher, Savas Beatie, is a well-known and respected military history publisher. Sam's conclusions are definitely controversial, but his work not being vetted is a condition that could be applied to most authors who publish in non-peer reviewed books, which would include Wiley Sword, Thomas Connelly, and other well-known historians in this area. Now I do agree that the form of the material you deleted was inappropriate, so I do not object to the result you achieved, but I hope you will give more deference to someone we should consider a reliable secondary source. Happy New Year, Hal. Considering the context of the edit, I respectfully disagree. I don't believe that any article's lead section should feature the opinions of a non-scholar whose work hasn't been vetted. Lead section's do not look good even when they have highly-credentialed historians mentioned by name let alone someone that doesn't hold those credentials. The edit was encapsulated by "...has recently been challenged by the work of authors such as Stephen M. Hood." which implies that he must be someone of outstanding significance. His Amazon page states that he is a "retired industrial construction company owner" as well as being a distant relative of the general. My natural question here is why do we care what he thinks? No disrespect intended to him. Calling attention to the fact that he was a company owner isn't meant to be negative but it is meant to illustrate that his opinion is certainly undue weight in the lead. Unless other scholars have accepted his views, he is beholding to fringe theory. Time will tell if it is accepted.

RPG-7

Hello. It's not a content dispute, it's a repeated deliberate attempt by Russian IPs to add an image with a fake claim that the tanks in the image were destroyed by RPG-7s, a claim that is not supported by the book the IP is referring to. Even going as far as changing the image description on Commons a week ago, adding the fake claim to the description there. Attempts to add the image have previously been made also on M60 Patton, where you can find a discussion about it on the talk page. Good catch, but the wording is still odd

I don't want to screw up the article on Firearm (tool)) with a hasty reverting as I am running out the door, so I wanted to drop you a quick note about the use of infantryman/person in the Automatic Rifles section. You had a good point on the way "single person" sounds like no married people qualify, but historical context shows that the staggering majority of these weapons are issued to non-infantrymen. All naval and air services are considered non-infantry, and depending on the era and nation, the infantry makes up less than a majority of the army (support troops are numerous). Plus, police, civilians, etc.

Just a suggestion, but how about "marksman," "shooter" or "operator" instead of "infantryman?" Davethehorrible (talk) 05:36, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

Rifleman also works. Think like you were the designer; who are you designing for? I actually do have plenty of sources if you want me to look for synonyms. You do realize that everyone in the army except chaplains and medical personnel are first and foremost an infantryman and you are expected to rely on your Basic Combat Training. This is your default MOS no matter what other job duties you end up with in the advanced MOS. Watering down the meaning by adding police and civilians gets away from the design history as these weapons were strictly designed for the infantry. They weren't designed for naval and air support services and I disagree with your statement "that the staggering majority of these weapons are issued to non-infantrymen". BARs are an infantry weapon, period. I think you may be confusing terms as an Automatic rifle is not an Assault rifle. Historically, support troops were issued minor weaponry like M1 Carbines.

Oh yeah, you may want to have him consider a legit public account per WP:SOCK#LEGIT for security reasons...perhaps left field-stripped of tools like Twinkle to limit damage.

No one should have to go through page history to find the link to your talk page. Experienced editors may know how to find you but you have made it harder and particularly so for new editors. I'm the second admin that has asked you to comply with WP:SIGLINK. Since you chose to ignore the first two requests from DoRD, the third request from me and only responded to the fourth upon threat of blocking, I know that you are being intentionally difficult. The time for debating the matter is over as you ignored those requests. If you post anywhere on Wikipedia again including this talk page without having your signature corrected, you will be blocked indefinitely. If you want to haggle, you can do so in your unblock request.
