Rangeblock question

Hi Berean Hunter - Did you mean to hard block this IP range ? Did a CU do a check to see what kind of collateral damage that may cause? I have what appears to be an unrelated account who cannot log in to edit and is requesting an unblock at UTRS. If logged in editing (as opposed to just account creation) does indeed need to be disabled for the range I'll see about getting them IPBE. --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 17:11, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi Ponyo, I've changed the block settings to allow accounts to edit so they shouldn't have a problem now. I started to block the latest IP they were using and converted to a rangeblock after looking at it further. Thank you for letting me know,
 — Berean Hunter (talk) 17:36, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
Cheers for that! --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 17:56, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

SPI closures

I saw that you closed the most recent incarnation of Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Krizpo. Is it appropriate for the admin who blocks the socks (me in this instance) to formally close like you did, or should that be reserved for SPI clerks? Qwyrxian (talk)

No, you can close. The differences are laid out here. We always welcome patrolling admins... :)

24.177.121.137

I saw you extended my block of 24.177.121.137 (talk · contribs) to two weeks because he used another IP. Did the user do something abusive with that other IP that I missed? Because I can only see it being used on the original IP's talk page, which is a place the IP can edit, anyway. Heimstern Läufer (talk) 00:31, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

He was using it to edit war over the messages being left on the previous IP talk page. Where it might be questionable using the same IP on one's talk while responding, using a different IP for such behavior isn't acceptable.
 — Berean Hunter (talk) 12:08, 27 September 2012 (UTC)
Meh. Seems pretty molehill to me, given that there was clearly no intent to deceive, as the first IP stated quite openly that he was the one removing the content. And as for edit warring; removing content from one's own talk page is considered exempt. I think this is a pretty shaky block extension. Heimstern Läufer (talk) 04:46, 28 September 2012 (UTC)

"User:TheMetallican" and sockpuppets

Hello, you were involved in a (now archived) sockpuppetry case involving the above user. While I never had any direct dealings with the above user, a sockpuppet of the above user added an intrusive edit to the Bay Area thrash metal page [1] and shortly thereafer, an autoconfirm, (User:FunnyPatrol99), is persistently trying to sustain the same edit [2], [3]. Does a new sock case need to be opened (I'm unfamiliar with the previous) or can this be dealt with in another, perhaps quicker way? Thanks, --Danteferno (talk) 22:26, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

Looks like this was already addressed now and the user is now blocked.

Unblock request of 24.177.121.137

Hello Berean Hunter. 24.177.121.137 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log), whom you have blocked, is requesting to be unblocked. The request for unblock is on hold while waiting for a comment from you. Regards, — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 17:57, 28 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi. This user raises what I think are good points in her/his unblock request, but I wanted to check with you before I unblocked. The "sock"'s only edits were to the user's Talk page, which isn't off-limits during a block. Any thoughts? — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 17:55, 28 September 2012 (UTC)

This probably isn't relevant to a decision on the unblock request, but I was curious. The 24. IP address is apparently assigned by Charter Communications in Madison, Wisconsin. There apparently is no geolocate function for an IPv6 address, but the address appears to be owned by Verizon in Bedminster, NJ. Does that mean that the IPv6 address is assigned to a user in New Jersey, or am I interpreting this incorrectly? Assuming 24. and the IPv6 address are the same person, I would've expected to see another dynamic IP address in the same range as the 24. address.--Bbb23 (talk) 23:35, 28 September 2012 (UTC)
I've left comment on the IP talk page. The switching of IP addresses is not legit. (Bbb23, no, it just means that the company that owns the IPv6 allocation is located in NJ but the user can be anywhere in their network.)

Your proposal at VPP

On the off-chance you hadn't noticed, your proposal regarding MOS:IDENTITY (which I ended up being in favor of) has since been archived to here. Not sure if you want to do anything with it; if you do, great, and if not I'd be more than happy to pick it up (once I figure out where the best place for it would be). The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 18:59, 28 September 2012 (UTC)

Feel free...just let me know where it goes so I can make sure to watch/participate. I haven't addressed it but that has been mostly owing to lack of time and I wondered if the community had its hands full when the issue didn't gain traction at the pump. Cheers,

I've started a thread at WT:MOS#Modification to MOS:IDENTITY. Any comments/additions are of course appreciated. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 17:51, 4 October 2012 (UTC)

Mmmm, bacon....

Talk page stalkers should be very jealous.

Had some of that red hot sausage with eggs for breakfast, looking forward to ribs for dinner. All that stuff came out pretty good, but I still can't believe how insanely good the smoked bacon came out. That was a very good idea. I like your idea of adding a chunk of onion in the center and a little garlic. I would imagine soaking it in traditional barbecue sauce would also be good. Or teriyaki. Or oregano/rosemary/thyme. Or leave a gap in the center and put in a chunk of sharp cheddar after smoking. We could probably fill the smoker up with nothing but variations of the the bacon if we were so inclined. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 16:37, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

Oh yes! They are quite savory and delicious. I think they would also work well as one of several items on kabob skewers too...hmmm, bacon, onion, shrimp, sweet red bell pepper chunks, tenderloin and pineapple; that combination cries out for teriyaki sauce. I wonder if minced garlic would hold if wrapped up in and throughout the bacon. An extra dusting of garlic and onion powders for good measure...
 — Berean Hunter (talk) 14:11, 1 October 2012 (UTC)
I love bacon, and I know that everything is better with bacon, but what is that, bacon-wrapped bacon? :D —DoRD (talk) 15:33, 1 October 2012 (UTC)
Yes! ...and they go very well with brown ale. These bacon rolls were hickory-smoked but I imagine smoking in apple wood would give a good flavor too. Those in the photo are whole slices rolled but Dennis suggested cutting them in half before rolling and I agree this would be better for allowing the heat through to smoke more crisply. Bacon goes with everything...you could even make tofu good if you wrapped it in bacon. :)

Beginning to wonder...

...whether we have a serious problem with User:Donaldecoho which we can no longer ignore. Check his recent talk page edits to get a picture, if you haven't been following. I've largely stayed out of the personal dispute, but the user is continuing to attack and belittle those with whom he disagrees. The battlefield mentality, incivility, and even competence of the user has made me feel we need to escalate this in some way. Per edits to Talk:Battle of Gettysburg I know you're an involved admin, so I'm not asking for direct action, but with Wikipedia:Wikiquette assistance inactive, I'm wondering the best way forward. This contribution to Amazon reviews seems way out of line. There's a bullying here which concerns me. BusterD (talk) 23:40, 7 October 2012 (UTC)

Yes, I started following this a few weeks ago and then saw some of this earlier today (still have open tabs). I saw the Amazon link this morning and I do find that disconcerting...until then, I wouldn't have considered myself involved because I was watching talk page behavior not related to Talk:Battle of Gettysburg. It is because he is mentioning Hal in the Amazon link that I would recuse from any admin role here and will encourage any other admins that see this thread to look into the situation. Here is a bit of a file that I had started on him including stale socking for behavioral considerations:
Donaldecoho was blocked 1 week on Oct. 3, 2011 for abusing multiple accounts. He immediately evaded his block as this IP and as this one.
  • Sgt Coho 125PACoK (created 10/14/2011 despite having been blocked for multiple account abuse)

IPs in use:

I see that things aren't improving and agree that it would be good if another admin could review..

Dressed weight

Just started, unreferenced after I redlinked it in Pig pickin'. Likely, it can be expanded to cover dressing as a form of butchering and then renamed, but we need an article on this concept and figured you could help me with this. I don't expect it to get large, but it needs covering nonetheless. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 15:50, 8 October 2012 (UTC)

Looking into this...may find something on the bookshelf. I also want to get some block time in clerking at SPI this afternoon after getting a few more things done (no pun intended :).
 — Berean Hunter (talk) 17:51, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
No problem. Don't hesitate to be bold. My concern was just getting the basic concept covered. I've added a little on field dressing as a comparison. Again, it might even change names with a redirect, but the idea of this as a mid stage of butchering is notable. Even a section on what they do with the parts that are undesirable (hot dogs, chorizo and bologna I assume) might fit. I dunno, not married into it. Seems like a lot of cattle links exist, mainly govt. types. I think I have enough to escape CSD for now. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 18:04, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
I've replied on the talk page there, but the carcass weight means something different in the sources than we are using it here at wikipedia. Carcass weight is the weight of the entire carcass, undressed. Then you have dressed weight, then you have retail cut weight. The last source I just added has a full breakdown for hogs. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 21:41, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
You've confused the term "live weight" with "carcass weight". Your McKiernan source backs me up on this in the introduction.
 — Berean Hunter (talk) 16:32, 9 October 2012 (UTC)
I will look at that latter and see about merging, since the other article was just a stub. Which term do you personally think is the better term? I see "dressed weight" more than "carcass weight", but my searching has likely been more limited than yours. On an unrelated note, Wikipedia:IPs are not human is something I've been considering for a while, and now just started. Very rough, but the whole IPs are human thing is a bit too much and not accurate, needing some balance. Your input would be highly desired, and arguably you are more qualified to write it anyway. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 13:57, 10 October 2012 (UTC)
Oh, I don't have a preference over the terms; I was mentioning the carcass weight issue because it looks to be the industry term (it is further sub-divided into Hot Carcass Weight and Cold Carcass Weight) and those may have different legal definitions in different nations as well as animal dependent industries. I was worried about getting it right when I realize that these are industry terms and I'm not qualified in that industry. I have field-dressed before but usually let a butcher finish the processing for me. It has been quite a while, too. :) I'm not sure about the merge and I'm not sure if this Ngram comparison tells us anything or not. They may well be candidates to remain as separate articles based on that.
Sure, I will look at the essay but not sure when...I'm still trying to get part of a design worked out this evening but wanted to stick my head in and check on a few things which I still haven't done.
 — Berean Hunter (talk) 22:33, 10 October 2012 (UTC)
I'm desperately trying to just edit. I miss doing that. Been working on Ball joint simply because I know a little about them and can find the sources. Surprising how bad the condition is on some of these common term articles. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 00:01, 11 October 2012 (UTC)

Saudi Arabia Semi-Protection

I see you put this in place until 21 October. Do you think there is any chance of it being made permanent? The vast majority of IP or red-linked editor edits are either not constructive (blanking etc) or typically relate to the old chestnuts of adding "Allah" into the Shahada or changing Persian Gulf to Arabian. DeCausa (talk) 08:15, 8 October 2012 (UTC)

I had noticed what you are talking about and hope to begin discouraging them with increasing levels of protection. Permanent would be rare and would likely need a consensus but I am willing to increase protection times if they return to the same behavior again after protection expires..1 month, 3 months, etc.
 — Berean Hunter (talk) 13:53, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
Hi, the semi-protection expired yesterday and the only IP edit since then has been a typical blanking edit here. Is that enough for a further semi period or does it need to be unprotected for a longer period to see what happens? DeCausa (talk) 20:33, 22 October 2012 (UTC)
It would be good to see what happens. The increase in protection time is to deter potential damage so we would need to justify it.

Sock-puppet Investigation

You tagged my user page as being a sock-puppet of Consettlad. However, my account is not mentioned in the relevant investigation. I am one of the users involved in reverting the hoax added by this user. Could you elaborate on this matter please? Pit-yacker (talk) 20:35, 10 October 2012 (UTC)

Actually your name was mentioned in the investigation and when I used a script which gathered your name from that report I accidentally tagged you...I had confused the closely-named PitYacker2 sock. I used the same script to block the other socks which is why I know that my tagging was an accident since I didn't block you by mistake. I have reverted that tagging and I apologize for my error and any inconvenience that may have caused you.

User:Metalvayne and blocking/topic ban

Hi Berean Hunter. A week ago, you blocked User:Metalvayne because he used a sockpuppet to get around his topic ban, where he's not allowed to edit anything related to genre or musical style on music pages. You blocked him for a week, with his block ending on late October 16. By October 17, he had already right away broken his topic ban, with this edit. Now, the edit was non-controversial, but he's already been warned that he's not supposed to edit music genre at all, (See here, and he even acknowledged that he knows this here.) So, I wanted to point out that he knowingly broke his topic ban as soon as his his block expired. Sergecross73 msg me 11:14, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

I see Metalvayne has been indeffed now and note the ANI thread. I support Beeblebrox's block.

Barbecue

Been a hell of week, sick parents and the like. We need to do some Q before Tgiving. I'm still eating on some of that last batch. Obviously not the bacon, that didn't last a day. Might need to do one full smoke of nothing but bacon variations. 10 pounds of smoked bacon should make a nice photo as well. We are going to have to be like Bubba and figure out a dozen varieties of smoked bacon to fill that thing full. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 19:45, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

I'm up for it. I started down the path of making the SC style mustard-based golden sauce this weekend. I didn't keep it very authentic but ended up with a excellent variation. I will be tweaking that recipe for future use. I slow-cooked tenderloin in it and now there are no leftovers. :)
 — Berean Hunter (talk) 13:13, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
Don't think I've tried SC style. By the way, the tenderloin is excellent smoked. You make a bowl out of foil, and smoke it with the fat side up on the top rack. It makes a ton of juice, but you keep it with the loin. Very, very tasty stuff. Might have to do one of those next time. You need to bring more dishes, some of this stuff is sloppy. I still need to do a brisket the night before you come down, let it slow cook in the oven overnight after smoking. Then we can just do ribs and bacon and the loin when you get here. I still drool when I think of that bacon. omg. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 19:28, 21 October 2012 (UTC)

Hey, BH, I did say I'd be willing to help out at SPI, so I'll take you up on your offer. I guess I need a trainer? Would you want to do this for me? Writ Keeper 18:39, 28 October 2012 (UTC)

Good news, No trainer is necessary for the role of patrolling admin which is what I was referring to. Only clerk trainees need a trainer; there is a wait list for that role here.
Admins and non-admin patrollers alike are needed to investigate, supply further evidence and advance the cases. You may want to to watchlist several cases and just follow along for now until such time that you are comfortable helping out. You will also find that your new ability to see a user's deleted contribs is helpful in evaluating evidence in some cases.

Thank you. That is correct so you would want to cite this work when copying sections and it would be okay. There is another matter, however, as you are copying his references incompletely. Cites such as "<ref>Seir, i, 624, note</ref> are his references but they have not been carried forward such as to have context in the current article. Who is Seir? He hasn't been mentioned anywhere. These references would need to be cited more properly.

I should clarify that the reason that I applied the second revdel was because I thought I had done something wrong on the first go around such that it didn't take and assumed that I had made a newbie mistake. I see now that by doing the second revdel, I made certain of that.

Deletions of "Cuba: Lost in the Shadows" from various Wikipedia pages

Berean Hunter---I wasn't aware of these restrictions on Wikipedia, and given them I certainly overposted. But there are two pages---William Alexander Morgan and Gerry Patrick Hemming---when a link to my documentary is appropriate. I have video interviews with these men that are not available anywhere else, and they add to their respective histories in relation to Cuba. I will repost the documetnary link to those two pages, but will otherwise follow the guidelines. Thanks for the heads-up.68.6.77.174 (talk) 05:24, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

Hmmm. This may be something due to differences in OSs because I can't see what you mean either way. I'm using Firefox on Ubuntu. If I remove the header (along with the one you have here), it doesn't change anything in the page layout that I'm seeing when using preview. Only a few things at the top of the page are centered for me. What "centering" are you seeing?

I've taken the liberty of fixing your header template since the unclosed HTML tags were making the usable width of this page about 300 pixels. Good luck! Reaper Eternal (talk) 18:32, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi -- given that the problem here is edit-warring by socks, was it perhaps your intention to apply semi-protection instead of full protection? thanks -- Nomoskedasticity (talk) 13:48, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

I didn't think that semi-protection would solve this. There is at least one account that is already autoconfirmed and the others would be/could be in short order. Additionally, I believe that the sock(s) are reaping what they sow here...let them learn the consequences and now have to deal with the situation through good old-fashioned consensus building.

Didn't want to drag on but I have seen them specifically say "this isn't a cu block" when indeffing someone. Usually when they do that they are making a judgment call as an admin and their purpose in signifying "this isn't a cu block" is that they didn't use the CU tool at all. Possible correct answers would be a.) Decline per (some logic found in WP:CUBL) b.) Leave it alone (that big heap checkuser voodoo...don't touch with ten foot pole) <== This was the acceptable one chosen. The only wrong answer was c.) Sure, AGF the guy and unblock him. Civil War and Language

Try not to revert edits without discussion, simply dismissing a point as nonsense. Goes against the Wikipedia policy of good faith editing, doesn't it? In any case, rather than argue with you, I'll just give you something to ponder: What's the difference between saying "A woman and her slave" and "A woman and her slaver" ? Other than the extra R. The former humanizes the slaveholder and objectifies the enslaved woman - a practice upon which slavery itself was predicated upon. The latter humanizes the enslaved woman and is blunt about the slaveholder. Why shouldn't we, in 2012, consider a shift in language to reflect that these were events that happened to people, perpetrated by other people, rather than defending the rights of slaveholders to be seen as human while the enslaved remain mere property. THIS is the discussion. And it's not nonsense. Chaosthethird (talk) 05:32, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

It is sheer nonsense that you are trying to start something which goes against the reliable sources. We aren't here to right great wrongs and "correct" common usage. Further, you don't seem to know the difference between slaver and slaveholder...there is no slaver in the photo. If you want to discuss edits, go make a proposal on the talk page and see if you can get a consensus to make such a change.

How do I unscrew this?

Hi Beran -

The Donald Leroy Truesdale article was written wrongly assuming Donald Truesdell was the birthname, so Truesdell redirects to Truesdale. The facts are the opposite, and Truesdell is the name at time of death, according to the Marines. I've corrected Truesdale, but it would seem right that the extant article should be Truesdell's. So how do I unscrew it so that Truesdale redirects to Truesdell? Unscrewing the internet MOH records as a whole is a bigger job. ☺ OTOH if you're OK with it as it is, I'll just color it done. ...best, JMOprof (talk) 16:23, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Well, the references aren't helping any. :) The SC State House site returns an error and the mil site is coming back as an untrusted connection. This Navy site states the opposite but I would trust this obit more. I've made some spelling corrections but left the quoted material as originally spelled and moved the article to the correct name.
 — Berean Hunter (talk) 23:40, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
Hi Beran - Thank you. It's my lot to give sysops work. My take was to follow the link in Reference 1, where there's a pdf for the citation that explicitly gives the date of the name change. And since that's the US Marine history site, and Truesdell was a Marine... Those Navy sites are nothing but trouble ☺ ...best, JMOprof (talk) 01:37, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
Season's cheer, Beran - my latest is here if you have the time. It was to be just a list of TC recipients, but it grew ☺ Master plan is to make it a "Tiffany Cross Medal of Honor" article, with "main article" mention on the MOH page. ...best, JMOprof (talk) 18:49, 16 December 2012 (UTC)

mmmm, bacon

It has been hard to find country-style ribs this fine lately.

Smoked a three pound block of bacon along with a bunch of ribs and some chicken wings. All of it came out awesome. All I added on the bacon was a light dusting of salt, I swear it is best that way. Smoked it a little longer including a half hour to finish on the top rack, with the fat down to drip away. omg. Even better than the first time. Baked the wings with Frank's sauce for an hour in the oven afterwards, amazingly good and tender. The bacon freezes really well too since it has more fat and less water, so the texture doesn't get messed up. Teahouse reminder

Hey Berean Hunter-- thanks for your help at The Teahouse. Just wanted to remind you to leave a reminder on the talk pages of user's questions that you've answered, so they know you've responded. Some new users have a hard time navigating back to the Teahouse questions page, and this makes it a bit easier. You can do this by adding this template to their page:

{{WP:Teahouse/Teahouse_talkback|WP:Teahouse/Questions|question title goes here|ts=~~~~}}

Thanks! Bonkers The Clown (Nonsensical Babble) 14:03, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

How is this a reminder? Where are these instructions written such that I would have known? Also, you've been with us for a year...I'm not leaving talkbacks all over the place for experienced editors.
 — Berean Hunter (talk) 14:27, 12 December 2012 (UTC)
Hi Berean Hunter, often when experienced editors are around the Teahouse for a while they become hosts. When you become a host, you learn about a few of the things about the Teahouse that are a little different from the rest of Wikipedia. You can find some of this information in the "host lounge". The most important thing (at least to me) is the idea of greeting people at the Teahouse and giving thorough friendly answers without using abbreviations (even when the asker seems not-so-new so that new users can understand the discussion). There are even scripts to make the Teahouse talkback that Bonkers is talking about really easy. Thanks for helping around the Teahouse! heather walls (talk) 17:18, 12 December 2012 (UTC)
Hi Heather, thank you for the explanation which is helpful. I had answered a question or two at the Teahouse before but was unaware of the talkback expectation. Am I using too many WP:TLAs there?  ...maybe that is what is meant by #4 Avoid overlinking; I recognize overlinking as something different. Would the masking of TLAs as I have done in the thread below be better? When I started WP some years ago, I found those to be helpful as I could remember them easily and they became intuitive but I suppose to some, it may look like alphabet soup. I'll try to be more mindful when responding there. Cheers,

Icemaker Page

Hello Berean Hunter,

My apologies for not understanding the guidelines correctly. I actually just copied the format of the other citations on the Icemaker page and noticed that livingdirect.com and buzzle.com both cited their websites as sources, and linked directly to the articles from which the information was attained. I thought I was doing the same thing? (Oops, I just realized that LivingDirect.com links to their Wikipedia page), but is there any chance you could elaborate on what is or is not allowed in terms of external linking? I'm aware that all links are no follow, and I want to cite the source of the information provided. This page could use a lot of help, and I have a lot of information to provide, but I do not want to violate any of Wikipedia's terms or guidelines.

Thank you in advance, AGRSIMP (talk) 15:08, 12 December 2012 (UTC)AGRSIMP

Hello AGRSIMP, I've tried to clean out some non-refs that link to company websites. Our standards for reliable sources require books, periodicals, journals, newspapers etc. but do not allow linking to assertions made at websites unless those sites are the official sites of published, vetted material. External linking has different standards but are only permitted in the External links section; linking externally within the body of the article is not permitted. See this about what not to link.
To find references, you may try using Google books. Ice Machines Plus will not be acceptable for linking or as a ref just as some of the other sites you mentioned are not suitable. You should also read this about having a conflict of interest before proceeding. Cheers,

User talk:Riversides

Hey, Berean. This user is requesting unblock (you'd blocked them as a suspected sock of User:Tirgil34, and I'm not entirely certain that this is actually Tirgil. The IP range he's editing from is very dynamic, and I don't think that his admission to requesting unblock on a sock-blocked IP is enough evidence to block him. I checked that IP, and there are a large number of accounts there, but none are blocked, none appear related to one another, and none are Riversides. On the other hand, I can't prove that Riversides is not Tirgil, particularly since he has no actual content edits yet. Either way, would you mind taking a look at this again, and possibly some of the IP blocks against this sockpuppeteer? As dynamic as this range is, I don't think they'll be terribly effective, and there's an awful lot of traffic to be placing rangeblocks. Hersfold (t/a/c) 04:21, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

  • I went and unblocked him. That IP is a very heavily used legitimate proxy, and the editor hadn't made any article edits yet, so I did what what I thought Berean Hunter would do had he reviewed the situation. I know BH isn't likely to be online for a few days, and wanted to be fair to the editor. By all means, if either of you have questions or think I goofed, ping me, but it looked like a coincidence here and blocks are cheap if it isn't. Wikihounding by possible sock

I was indirectly referred to you by User:Coren, because I have an issue with which I need some assistance. I believe I am being wikihounded by a sock, and I have dozens of diffs to provide. My questions here are, 1) are you willing to help, and 2) should I post these diffs on-wiki (your talk I presume) or would you prefer I e-mailed them to you privately so as to not tip-off the sockmaster/troll? Thanks for your time. GabeMc (talk|contribs) 21:35, 16 January 2013 (UTC)

Email me what you have so I can evaluate it.

Thanks for being willing to take a look. I've now e-mailed you some diffs. GabeMc (talk|contribs) 23:54, 16 January 2013 (UTC)
Got it...it may take me a bit to sort through and I have limited time this evening so I appreciate your patience.

User:Serafin

Hi, you seem to be familiar with User:Serafin, per this. He is back now as this IP and this IP eating up time again, doing the same edits. He does not seem to want to stop. Thanks. History2007 (talk) 17:52, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

Blocked one for one month and the other for three. I'm basing these times on how long I believe he has used them and therefore has persistence at these addresses. If he keeps up then it may be a good idea to file an SPI so we can track his IPs and be able to consider rangeblocks.

@Berean Hunter It seems to me for you it is not important what value of the editions can be, if an IP provided new resources and improves Wikipedia. For you it is important to block somebody whom you do not like. It is easy to do so, as it is easy to make a mistake - you can make wrong to innocent person more often than not. I have one advice for such "Sheriffs" like you, try to make real edition and study problem 10 times before you use your power. Ribs

Been busy, but taking the time to do up some ribs for dinner. Ginger, garlic, sugar, paprika and several secret ingredients. Too bad you aren't around. Trying something completely different, will let you know how it turns out. Got company next weekend, family I haven't seen in ages, but we need to schedule a cookout. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 19:55, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

  • Meh, they came out better the old way. Have family coming in this weekend, think I will do up some ribs the old fashioned way for them. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 13:53, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
Heh, I'm finally around but not getting around. Messed my leg up but hope that is short-lived because I need to get back up. I've been staying productive but not on Wiki. I'm supposed to cook for family this weekend but that may have to change depending whether the infection clears.
I'm wondering if the bacon shouldn't be somewhat flat and on its side in the smoker (like ribs turned on their sides in a rack). It would curl but would probably produce better end results. Another experiment to try... :).
 — Berean Hunter (talk) 15:37, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
What we NEED is a whole slab of uncut bacon, then smoke it whole. Don't cut it until it is done smoking for about 2 hours. And beer. We always need beer. I would imagine you have to go to a butcher to get a slab of uncut bacon. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 22:58, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
I'll look and see...Sam's may have it. I imagine hickory or apple wood might give best flavors. Was the wine decent? (Thinks about it and remembers that Berean got some for self but had put it up and forgot about it...just moved into the fridge for later in the week).
 — Berean Hunter (talk) 00:02, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
Haven't drank any wine. Don't think I've even had a beer since then. I have some hickory, but think I could pick up some applewood if they have it in stock. Wonder what else we could smoke with applewood? Maybe some chicken. Not sure about applewood and ribs, never heard of that. The bacon has me drooling though. Slow cook the fat out of it, leaving it lean and smokey. Didn't even think about doing that until I posted here, but that does sound interesting. Wonder if I could reverse the order, slow cook a shoulder in the oven for several hours and finish it in the smoker for two hours with the bacon over it. Something to think about. Need to check that book out for applewood when I get the time. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 00:12, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
You mean you still have the wine that I gave you? That's a surprise. I would have thought that gone long ago. I've had Our Dog Blue before and enjoyed it as a table wine but I've never had the blackberry and looking forward to it. I see that we do have a small article on the winery.

User move

Berean, does the move at the top of this list make any sense to you? (In case the list changes before you see this, it's the one at 9:30 on 13 February.)--Bbb23 (talk) 01:09, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

It looks like the user is trying incorrectly for a renaming possibly out of frustration. Since there are no contribs on that account, I don't see any illegitimate use; it would be interesting to see if they actually have control of that account since it was created on 26 October 2005 but I see that their own account goes back to 2006 so it is possible. I will be taking a closer look later...I see that things are a bit erratic.
 — Berean Hunter (talk) 14:27, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
I vaguely recall seeing something about Blackgaia02 and multiple accounts, but now I can't remember where I saw it. I understand that the other user has made no contributions, but Blackgaia02 still has no right to create a user page for that user unless they own both accounts. I'll wait the outcome of your "closer look"; thanks.--Bbb23 (talk) 17:06, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

School block

Hi Berean, in reviewing a request for an account, I came across 168.9.0.0/16, which you school blocked but you left it as a hardblock. Was this the intention, and if so, can you give me any indication of what the issue was? (Feel free to email if it's more appropriate) -- DQ (ʞlɐʇ) 02:57, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

I have gone ahead and downgraded the block, until this is sorted out. -- DQ on the road (ʞlɐʇ) 16:44, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
I haven't looked but I fully trust your judgment. If this is still an issue, I'll look into it further if you have any questions for me. Actually, a hardblock on a /16 would most likely be unintentional unless a CU checked that range or I was putting out a fire from an IP hopper. Again, if needed, I will be happy to review.

RE: External Links

When I am adding links to the external links section of people I have interviewed, why are they being removed? These interviews are official and have been cleared by the press of each artist I work with. Please further clarify how I am to add these to the wiki pages.

You are strongly discouraged from linking to any website that you own or are a part of as this is considered to be a form of self-promotion. By linking in the EL sections, you are hoping to steer readers toward your site. Even linking to your own articles published by other sources is still a conflict of interest.

Mathematician 11 SPI

Hello and thanks for the quick response plus the link to the tool. What shall I do with the IPs when I find them? The list is pretty massive. Do you want me to add them all to the SPI report? Elizium23 (talk) 05:21, 9 August 2013 (UTC)

I've left the report open for now but only the top two IPs were blocked...there appears to be another user who is also using these same IPs but in any event, none of the other IPs have been used by Mathematician 11 on the Iglesias matter in over a week. Unless you find where they have been used within the last couple of days, I wouldn't list them.

"big.LITTLE" article capitalisation

Hi there,

I randomly noticed that you made a good copy-editing-related correction to an article that I had also edited. This gave me the idea that you might be a good person to weigh in on a rather fierce debate I've been involved in. There's no hurry, but if you ever get the time, here is the link: Talk:Big.LITTLE#Article Title - Capitalisation.

My point of view is that the article title should follow the MoS on capitalization (Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Trademarks), irrespective of what the majority of sources present (given that the majority of sources are technical blogs with little regard for copy editing). And in fact, the more reputable publications use the correct capitalisation (Big.little) anyway:

InfoWorld
PCWorld
EE Times
eWeek

I even provided two links to tech-related articles that follow correct English capitalisation irrespective of the trademark:

DualShock
Smite

However, as everybody else involved in the debate is a tech person, and not a journalist, they believe that we should disregard the manual of style, and simply follow the most common title usage (in accordance with the hundreds of cheap tech blogs writing about the subject).

At any rate, I've given up on them, as none of them have any interest in proper copy-editing or the MoS guidelines. They refuse to even read my comments.

InternetMeme (talk) 16:47, 18 August 2013 (UTC)

I don't have an opinion on this article title but would tend to defer to achieving talk page consensus. It looks like the matter has been receiving a fair bit of attention from several editors.

Another SPI for Gunmetal

I already placed the same request on Elockid's talk page, but since you were previously involved with the other SPI today, was wondering if you would take a look here? [8] Thanks,-- Winkelvi 01:57, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

Such similar ways of editing, protesting, and articles in common. The only difference I can see is that Metallican doesn't use profanity and become a hot head like Gunmetal. My guess is they are either the same guy playing an elaborate game or they know each other. Found it pretty weirldy conincidental that their socks edited the same article in the same day, not long after one of the socks was IP rangeblocked. I will do it better if there's a next time (with diffs and so forth). -- Winkelvi 16:13, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

  Done
 — Berean Hunter (talk) 19:17, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

Problem. And this has happened before (you're not the first to get them confused). The IPs definitely belong to Gunmetal Angel, the accounts that were blocked for socking belong to TheMetallican. This needs to be corrected on the SPI page. I was only commenting on how similar they are, but the IPs do distinguish them. TheMetallican's IPs come out of Studio City, CA, Gunmetal Angel's come out of LA. -- Winkelvi 23:01, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

Hmmm. Since I'm not privy to the checkuser's info and I presume that it could have played a role in his results, I would be reluctant to make changes myself. He cannot discuss the IPs publicly either.
 — Berean Hunter (talk) 23:57, 20 August 2013 (UTC)
The IPs I'm referring to are those that were blocked yesterday before I opened the last SPI request that ended up being TheMetallican. The IPs were Gunmetal, the accounts (not IPs) were TheMetallican. What you did was combine all the SPIs together with the end result being they all belonged to TheMetallican. The IPs that were rangeblocked are not TheMetallican. The SPIs in total (all of them on the current page that's not yet closed) are currently labeled to belong to TheMetallican but they need to be separated. The last one for TheMetallican, the ones previous ones for Gunmetal. Make sense? -- Winkelvi 00:16, 21 August 2013 (UTC)
I believe that I have that sorted out right now. Also, do you recognize this one?
 — Berean Hunter (talk) 01:46, 21 August 2013 (UTC)
I came across an edit today that was exactly the same as one done a few days ago by one of the Gunmetal Angel IPs:[9] The IP originated from a T-Mobile cellphone. Which makes sense since the rangeblock has forced him to find other ways to edit that are not from his regular ISP. The ones you listed above look like they could belong to either GMA or TM, especially since they are genre changes. Using an IP outside the US is called using a proxy (I think). That would also fit as a way to edit since the rangeblock, which would lead me to believe it is GMA. -- Winkelvi 02:30, 21 August 2013 (UTC)
Cheers.
 — Berean Hunter (talk) 02:46, 21 August 2013 (UTC)

Just opened a new SPI request for the above mentioned GMA IP sock. [10] -- Winkelvi 02:50, 21 August 2013 (UTC)

You're fast! And -- he's obviously watching this conversation. -- Winkelvi 02:52, 21 August 2013 (UTC)

Album Ratings being removed.

I have recently added critic Lachlan J.'s scores to some albums, and these have been removed. I have been told that I have been self-promoting and soapboxing, but I don't believe this to be the case. All I have done is added and referenced the scores given to certain albums by Lachlan J. I have not posted any kind of opinion at all and I have not been promoting any kind of opinion or external site.

Can you please explain to me why these were removed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.171.238.76 (talk) 05:05, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

Could you please link to the Lachlan J. article? I'm having a hard time finding it.
 — Berean Hunter (talk) 05:07, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

I don't think he has a dedicated article on Wikipedia yet. I've just been editing the pages of certain albums ("Heroes" by David Bowie, "Debut by Bjork for example) in the critical reception section so that more than just Allmusic.com's criticisms were represented, but these have since been removed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.171.238.76 (talk) 05:13, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

If he doesn't have an article then he doesn't seem to satisfy notability requirements. Why would we care what some guy thinks that we have never heard of? Further, why would you promote so much of just this one guy? I would suggest that you find critiques from mainstream sources.

Request for page protection on Little Round Top

We have a lovely IP editor dropping by and replacing all the geological formation stuff with Genesis; we're already up to about five times in fifteen hours. I'm wondering if that might be grounds for partial page protection? IcarusPhoenix (talk) 19:04, 11 September 2013 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) @IcarusPhoenix: Pages are only protected when there is severe vandalism that cannot be dealt with trough a regular WP:BLOCK. In this case there is just a single IP so a block will work just fine (I went ahead and gave the IP a 48 hour one). Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 19:09, 11 September 2013 (UTC)

Talk:Bradley Manning/October 2013 move request

Greetings. Because you participated in the August 2013 move request regarding this subject, you may be interested in participating in the current discussion. This notice is provided pursuant to Wikipedia:Canvassing#Appropriate notification. Cheers! bd2412 T 21:29, 4 October 2013 (UTC)

(After scratching head) I'm guessing that my involvement in the August discussion must have been this adjustment to the archiving to help keep things straight. I knew that unless Manning reversed the identity change that it would be the status quo with the name Chelsea. Sheesh! There have been some exhaustive discussions over this...what a time sink. Thanks for letting me know.

Please Do Not Remove US Census Data

This was from over 2 years ago, where you removed the whole US Census template because one of the sources was not sufficiently reliable. In the future, especially if there is a good reference as well, either merely remove the unreliable reference or check the data for yourself to verify. What you did just creates more work ... Sherman

My statement: "Despite the fact that Louis XIV's generals subjected the German Palatine to a "scorched earth" policy more than a century earlier" is not a matter of historical debate. Just because some British historian publishes something, doesn't make it correct, however "famously" he might have said it. Incidentally, you might like to delete all references to what Louis XIV's generals did in the Palatine, which appear in other Wikipedia articles, from other sources. I like truth and accuracy, not rubbish, even if the rubbish has been published somewhere. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Georgehwk (talkcontribs) 20:31, 22 December 2013 (UTC)

Hood

Howdy, and Happy New Year. I wanted to take exception to a reversion you made in the John Bell Hood article. Your stated reason "Rm fringe theory by isolated author that is qualified as "retired industrial construction company owner". Work not vetted by scholars." is quite arguable. I know the author personally (and in fact did the maps for his book) and although he does not have formal academic credentials, his profession should not be considered a negative factor on his scholarship. His publisher, Savas Beatie, is a well-known and respected military history publisher. Sam's conclusions are definitely controversial, but his work not being vetted is a condition that could be applied to most authors who publish in non-peer reviewed books, which would include Wiley Sword, Thomas Connelly, and other well-known historians in this area. Now I do agree that the form of the material you deleted was inappropriate, so I do not object to the result you achieved, but I hope you will give more deference to someone we should consider a reliable secondary source. Hal Jespersen (talk) 18:34, 22 January 2014 (UTC)

Happy New Year, Hal. Considering the context of the edit, I respectfully disagree. I don't believe that any article's lead section should feature the opinions of a non-scholar whose work hasn't been vetted. Lead section's do not look good even when they have highly-credentialed historians mentioned by name let alone someone that doesn't hold those credentials. The edit was encapsulated by "...has recently been challenged by the work of authors such as Stephen M. Hood." which implies that he must be someone of outstanding significance. His Amazon page states that he is a "retired industrial construction company owner" as well as being a distant relative of the general. My natural question here is why do we care what he thinks? No disrespect intended to him. Calling attention to the fact that he was a company owner isn't meant to be negative but it is meant to illustrate that his opinion is certainly undue weight in the lead. Unless other scholars have accepted his views, he is beholding to fringe theory. Time will tell if it is accepted.
 — Berean Hunter (talk) 19:28, 22 January 2014 (UTC)

Well, as I said, "I do agree that the form of the material you deleted was inappropriate ...." It should have been included in the appropriate parts of the main article, balanced against other secondary sources, and properly cited. I presume you would not have had a problem with that. This, of course, is one of the problems with having a one-line editing summary. Hal Jespersen (talk) 17:24, 23 January 2014 (UTC)

Oh no, I wouldn't have a problem with that. It would probably be better if you did it rather than him as I imagine you would be able to present it in a more neutral way and I know that you have a good library for counterbalancing viewpoints.

RPG-7

Hello. It's not a content dispute, it's a repeated deliberate attempt by Russian IPs to add an image with a fake claim that the tanks in the image were destroyed by RPG-7s, a claim that is not supported by the book the IP is referring to. Even going as far as changing the image description on Commons a week ago, adding the fake claim to the description there. Attempts to add the image have previously been made also on M60 Patton, where you can find a discussion about it on the talk page. Also see the customised text I added to the warning I gave the IP on their talk page. Thomas.W talk to me 18:36, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

Hello Thomas, Either way, it prevents repeated edit warring by the IP. If he refuses to discuss then we'll handle it differently. I didn't know that it had been discussed previously; thank you for letting me know.
 — Berean Hunter (talk) 18:55, 28 January 2014 (UTC)
I mixed up the discussions, the previous discussion wasn't on M60 Patton, but spread out over the talk pages of two IPs, of which I can find one: User talk:217.197.255.121. And as you can see from that discussion this has been going on for months. Thomas.W talk to me 19:10, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

I was removing a disruptive editor's mass spamming after I blocked that editor.
 — Berean Hunter (talk) 22:32, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
I should point out that it's actually an established editor editing whilst logged out. I'm wary of making the connection explicit though, because it involves the editor's identity in the real world (name, workplace &c), and there's nothing to be gained from outing in this case. Anyway; thanks for cleaning up, Berean Hunter. bobrayner (talk) 00:55, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

Amanda Knox

If you feel it's necessary to remove links from one reputable news source about a subject, then you should remove ALL links from news sources, unless you have a vested interest in supporting one over another ... is that the case? Ie:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amanda_Knox — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bmaljevec (talkcontribs) 16:52, 31 January 2014 (UTC)

No, I'm not supporting one source over the other. I have removed your additions because you seem to be a promotional account which is spamming strictly CBS links. You will need to stop that as well as the refspam or your account may be blocked.
 — Berean Hunter (talk) 16:58, 31 January 2014 (UTC)

Why do you refuse to remove the Guardian's link to their news coverage on the subject? Clearly you have a vested interest in supporting one source over another. You are a disservice to the Wiki community. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bmaljevec (talkcontribs) 17:04, 31 January 2014 (UTC)

 — Berean Hunter (talk) 17:08, 31 January 2014 (UTC)

Managing global accounts

Hi, Berean. Thanks for the advice, and the tact (I liked the "In the Darwinbish account", that was a nice way of putting it :-)). It turns out Darwinbish can't change anything by clicking on "Manage your global account", but it doesn't really matter, because her account is already active on 19 project sites (how on earth did that happen? — she has edited and even created an account on Commons, but nowhere else), which seems plenty for such a naughty little user. Thanks again. Bishonen | talk 19:59, 3 February 2014 (UTC).

You're welcome. Maybe 'Zilla stole Darwinbish name to perpetrate on other sites. Good way to have fun on cold winter nights.

Hehehehehe, perpetrate, I must remember that. Bad 'Zilla! Perp! darwinbish Hey autocorrect, quit tampering with my cursewords, you mother forklift , 21:49, 3 February 2014 (UTC).

Good catch, but the wording is still odd

I don't want to screw up the article on Firearm (tool)) with a hasty reverting as I am running out the door, so I wanted to drop you a quick note about the use of infantryman/person in the Automatic Rifles section. You had a good point on the way "single person" sounds like no married people qualify, but historical context shows that the staggering majority of these weapons are issued to non-infantrymen. All naval and air services are considered non-infantry, and depending on the era and nation, the infantry makes up less than a majority of the army (support troops are numerous). Plus, police, civilians, etc.

Just a suggestion, but how about "marksman," "shooter" or "operator" instead of "infantryman?" Davethehorrible (talk) 05:36, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

Rifleman also works. Think like you were the designer; who are you designing for? I actually do have plenty of sources if you want me to look for synonyms. You do realize that everyone in the army except chaplains and medical personnel are first and foremost an infantryman and you are expected to rely on your Basic Combat Training. This is your default MOS no matter what other job duties you end up with in the advanced MOS. Watering down the meaning by adding police and civilians gets away from the design history as these weapons were strictly designed for the infantry. They weren't designed for naval and air support services and I disagree with your statement "that the staggering majority of these weapons are issued to non-infantrymen". BARs are an infantry weapon, period. I think you may be confusing terms as an Automatic rifle is not an Assault rifle. Historically, support troops were issued minor weaponry like M1 Carbines.

Hi Berean, you blocked the account of user:Jeffrd10 as a compromised account. This user is a frequent IRC user with a confirmed wikipedia cloak. On IRC he indicated that the account was indeed compromised, and he has re-gained control over it. I'm fully convinced from earlier interactions on IRC that this is indeed this user on IRC. Through an edit to his talk linked to IRC I can also confirm that he has re-gained control over the account. With all that together I would like to unblock the account. Do you have any objections to that? Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 17:19, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

Just seconding Martijn's opinion. Nick (talk) 17:22, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

Some explanation from the user would be good. Little brother? Also, have they changed their password? That kind of thing can't happen again with that account if unblocked.
 — Berean Hunter (talk) 17:29, 7 February 2014 (UTC)
I'll go through the motions with him right away (new password, possibly a committed identity). It was a school computer he left unlocked - if you look at the compromised edits, I'm sure you can get an idea behind the unfortunate situation there. Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 17:31, 7 February 2014 (UTC)
If you like that on-wiki I'm happy to ask him - but he's understandably somewhat shaken by it. Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 17:32, 7 February 2014 (UTC)
You can unblock him as it sounds like you are taking responsibility for him. :) I reserve the right to indef him if things go that erratic again. Agreed?

Absolutely. I think the lessons learned amount is quite high here. Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 17:40, 7 February 2014 (UTC)
