I believe it would be useful to have more opinions on Talk:Casablanca (film) on the general question of what constitutes WP:UNDUE in terms of criticism of a film, and the specific question of whether Umberto Eco's criticism of Casablanca should be included in the article, and to what extent.

Adding "Popular pages" to U.S.-related projects

A very interesting tool of the Wikimedia Toolserver is called WikiProject Popular pages lists. These lists are similar to project-related article lists like U. S. article lists used for generating assessment statistics. The Popular pages lists include the rank, total views, average daily views, quality and importance ratings for the listed articles. Here is the full list of projects using popular pages lists. An FAQ also is available at User:Mr.Z-man/Popular pages FAQ.

I recently added links to lists of popular pages as shown below to the U.S. Portal - WikiProjects box and the nominations sections for each of the selected articles boxes.

Because this project was not included, I am bringing up the popular pages tool here. This tool makes it very easy to track three of four balancing dimensions when selecting articles for showcasing at a portal - quality, importance and popularity. When tracking the fourth dimension, topic, the related article lists tool (such as for U.S. article lists tool) also might be useful by filtering on categories of interest.

If you do decide to use this tool, feel free to update Portal:United States/Projects/Popular pages as well.

PLEASE READ - ANONYMOUS (STREET MEAT)

Someone keeps removing all relevant information and clarificationon Anonymous (Street Meat) -- why is this happening with such contentiousness? This project is being singled out while, for one examplme, the page for a short like "Saturday Night Live" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturday_Night_Special_(film) read like publicity pages and I'm told that with 3.7 million articles, it cannot be attended to. I don't understand. Is it because "Saturday Night Live" is made by a man? Please let me know. There are precious few message films made by women who are recognized by film festivals or the industry at large.

I think that "anonymous (street meat) is placed in peril, despite its notability. I have another film to shoot and don't have all the time in the world. I have a family and many personal responsibilities. SO IF THEY WANT TO DELETE THIS ONE, THEY WILL. They'll add "friendly" to their deletion as if that made it "friendly." That will be the end of it. ANONYMOUS (STREET MEAT)

Dear friends:

However, the file was truncated. Meanwhile, I was interviewed by someone from the Huffington Post yesterday. The interview centered on my inspiration for "anonymous (street meat)" -- a 2-year ordeal with Bank of America. With demonstrations and movements like "Occupy Wall Street" going on against Wall Street and the too-big-to-fail banks, the script for "anonymous (street meat)" was was a metaphor ahead of its time by having a plot that dealt with bank abuse with harrowing images. That's why the film has been well received at festivals abroad -- in Seoul Korea, for one, it was screened in over 14,000 monitors throughout the city. The HP article will link up to "anonymous (street meat)" and it is scheduled for publication on November 1st, or earlier. This sort of coverage is remarkable for a first film by a student while still a student (UCLA third year). "anonymous (street meat)" was finished, complete with sci-fi special effects, on January 21, 2011 - it had been presented before class at the UCLA Bridges Theater on December 8, 2010.

Whether one agrees with "anonymous (street meat)" or not ,and whether one even likes it, this is part of the news and the broader sociatal picture.

Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places/Fall 2011 Photo Contest

WP:NRHP is having a Fall Photo Contest running from Oct. 21-Dec. 4, 2011. I'd like to encourage anybody who enjoys photography, and anybody who is interested in historic places to participate as a photographer, a sponsor, or both.

One way that an individual editor or a project can participate is to sponsor their own challenge. For example, somebody here might want to include a challenge such as "A barnstar will be awarded to the photographer who adds the most photos of previously non-illustrated NRHP sites of movie theaters to the NRHP county lists." To sponsor a challenge all you need to do is come up with an idea, post it on the contest page, and do the small bit of work needed to judge the winner(s).

Proposal to add American cinema task force under WikiProject United States

Greetings, I am a member of WikiProject United States, it was recently suggested that the American cinema task force of WikiProject Film might be inactive or semi active and it might be beneficial to include a joint task force for it in the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States, which Kumioko have added some of the projects like WikiProject American television and WikiProject United States Government. After reviewing the project it appears that there have not been any active discussion on the talk page in some time and the only content updates appear to be simple maintenance so being supported by a larger project might be beneficial. This discussion is intended to start the process of determining if the project members are interested in the joint task force being added to the projects supported by WikiProject United States. Improving the Lists of American films

I think the lists like List of American films of 1910 should have a navigation box on the top-right corner, like the page 1910 in film has ( using a template like {{Year nav topic2}} ). And maybe another navigation box at the bottom of the page, like 1910 in film has.

Also, I think sections like 1910 in film#Films released in 1910 should have at the top a message like:

Importance ratings

Has this group decided to not give articles importance ratings? and if not, why are some rated by importance? i tried to find how Ronald Reagan is given a high importance rating (im not questioning the rating, only how someone managed to code it as that), and i cant find a banner that includes it in that importance category. there must be something i dont understand. Hi Mercurywoodrose. None of the task forces nor the Film project itself gives importance ratings. I'm not sure why not, but we don't. It's not even in our coding. Regarding Ronald Reagan, it appears that he does not even have a Film project banner. You may be referring to the parameter |cinema-importance= in {{WikiProject United States}}. Discussion to remove the Automatically assessed logic from the WikiProject United States template

Greetings, there is a discussion regarding removal of the logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories from Template:WikiProject United States. Most of the categories (over 220 Wikipedia wide) were deleted in February 2013 because they were empty. These categories were previously populated by a bot that hasn't run since 2011 and the categories aren't used. Removal of this uneeded/unused logic will greatly reduce the size and complexity of the WikiProject United States template. Any comments or questions are encouraged here. Lest there is any confusion for people who don't speak the same language, the words "logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories" refer to the feature that was supposed to allow this WikiProject's template to "inherit" class and importance ratings from other WikiProjects. Copyright Violation Detection - EranBot Project

A new copy-paste detection bot is now in general use on English Wikipedia. Come check it out at the EranBot reporting page. This bot utilizes the Turnitin software (ithenticate), unlike User:CorenSearchBot that relies on a web search API from Yahoo. It checks individual edits rather than just new articles. Determining Importance

I think we should set some guidelines for this. We have a problem when The Hangover Part III is rated as mid-importance. Okay. I propose these rules: -We base importance on encylopedic/informational importance. Ie, if you are film school, will they ask you about Star Wars, or will they ask you about Hitchcock? This is too focused on recentivist cultural importance, so classic silents are rated below shitty new movies in importance. In 50 years, what will we think is important? So some principles. Firstly, just because American film is more specific than regular film doesn't mean we should automatically move everything up one in importance from wikiproject film. Things moderately important to film as a whole can also be moderately important to American film. 1. No people should be top-importance. Period. No films should be top-importance. Only articles which talk about defining American cinema as a whole should be top importance. Ie, Cinema of the United States. "Classical Hollywood Cinema". 2. Most "high-importance" articles should be of influential concepts not restricted to a single person or work- Entities like "MGM", and things like "New Hollywood", "Westerns", "film noir". Films included are the kind which were masterpieces and/or pioneering for the medium, those called "the best X ever". "Casablanca", "Citizen Kane", blahblahblah. Very few people are of high importance. Basically just the people mentioned here are of high importance, though they needn't be included in this project as they are well-served by the biography project. In fact, most actors should not be in this project since they aren't the focus of film criticism. But directors like Griffith and Hitchcock are high importance. 3. Mid-importance includes the popular or critically acclaimed actors and directors not listed there, and works such as "Avatar". 4. Blade Runner low importance?

This confuses me, it was preserved in the National Film Registry before Eraserhead; and arguably BR has had more influence on American cinema than Casablanca (film). - RoyBoy 22:35, 16 June 2017 (UTC)

I think it is considered low-importance for WikiProject United States in general. There are a lot more U.S. topics that are more important. It may be part of the American Cinema task force, but it's a project rating, not a task-force rating. You can see under WikiProject Film, it is considered part of the core list of films. I think you have to consider the scope of WikiProject United States. That would include the U.S. states, the Presidents, key members of Congress, landmarks, all the major historical events, etc. Film is part of it, but I am not sure if Blade Runner rates highly in that scope. A GAR was opened up for Star Wars a month ago, and it's starting to garner comments. Lately, the article has been having issues with structure, length, disputes over the best way to summarize the elements. There is not much here in the UK, and MOST of the ref sites I found are US and not available in the UK, so I cannot get refs from them :(

The Curse of the Cat People

This article recently underwent a fairly major expansion that might need to some fresh eyes to assess. I've removed a big chuck of bio information about the film's producer, but the the plot section was expanded quite a bit and seems a bit overly detailed now. Importance scale

Hello American cinema task force members. I've recently did a major expansion in the entry for Dog Day Afternoon, and it is currently a Good Article nominee. I couldn't help but notice that the article was classed as "low importance" on the project's scale. It is also the case for Cool Hand Luke, and that Jailhouse Rock was not rated. I am aware that it is the case particularly for this productions because I worked on their GA nominations. Now, I wanted to bring your attention to the fact that all three of them were inducted into the National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". Shouldn't all the films inducted to the National Film Registry be classified as at least "high importance" regarding American Cinema? I haven't checked the status of the other films on the list, but I do think it is important to make a case for rating all the articles in the list at least as "high importance".--GDuwenHoller! 14:30, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
