Morley Shih (prosecutor and judge)

Thank you for your contribution for the page Morley Shih. Your previous revision before September 2017 showed that Shih was indicted on charges of fraud, which is not totally true. The fact is that the loose regulation for the special funds resulted in the charges, and thus these have been decriminalized in 2011. The related reference has been added in the page. However, the incorrect information from your revision has spread out for a while. I have written several politicians' biographies simply because I'm interested in politics. I did not mean to write an attack page, nor do I have a conflict of interest. Findagrave

I noticed you removed the findagrave reference on an article I created about a 19th century Virginia legislator and Confederate soldier, Robert E. Grant (dentist). IMHO the Wikipedia policy allows rare use of findagrave and ancestry.com, in both instances where the information is not available elsewhere. Here, understanding these men's backgrounds is crucial for understanding the era, and ancestry.com links to findagrave.com, which has a photo of gravestone as well as its location (both of which are important to people like these who meet Wikipedia's notability criteria). I tried including just findagrave number, but another editor objected to that. Eliminating all findagrave references per the policy you cited seems unwarranted.Jweaver28 (talk) 16:19, 16 January 2018 (UTC)

@Jweaver28: What I cited in removing Find A Grave is a guideline, not policy, but, still, I would strongly suggest reviewing those links I left in my edit summary. Specifically, I encourage looking to the state blue book or equivalent publication to see if the information can be verified. If so, use those those sources instead, as they are regarded as more reliable, than user generated content. The reliability of Wikipedia has been questioned before, and specific sources of user-generated content have been looked down upon, including IMDb and Wikipedia itself. As an example, look into the edit history of John Kooiker. I'd used Find A Grave as a reference because I did not find an obituary published in the local paper elsewhere on the web. When another editor approached me about the reliability of Find A Grave, I managed to find the same reference I wanted hosted on the website of a local historical society, and no longer contested the removal of Find A Grave. Thanks. Unfortunately, I can't find a reference in a local historical society publication, though I do try to do such, in this casepresumably because of the distances involved. The problem is especially acute for African-Americans and Republicans in the South in this era, and of course if someone found such a reference I would have no objection to removing the findagrave one. FYI, the equivalent of the Blue Book in Virginia only began early in the next century and West Virginia and elsewhere much later.

I also understand the reliability issue. Right now, as I'm trying to update this much-used laptop with the problematic space bar (and whose Malwarebytes scan wouldn't complete over theweekend) and what I hope will become its replacement (another windows 10 update just having failed, seemingly for the umpteenth time), I'm about to revise the Jefferson Davis article, which had major issues in the former "Later Life" section. It seemingly falsely states that he was elected a Senator from Mississippi in 1875. I managed to find the modern biography and have read about half of its explanation of his later life, whichlike theAppleton's Encyclopedia article from 1915 (readily available online) doesn't reflect the Davis article text as it stood as of Sunday (when I noticed several errors and started a cleanup during another attempt at the same updates, but with fewer library resources available). I'm writing at some length not only because the security updates are attempting to start yet again, but because the findagrave issue keeps coming up with subarticles. For example, Davis's book (The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government, which has two wikipedia problem tags at the top) was actually started by a former Confederate officer turned life insurance salesman named W.T. Walthall(1820-1899), who was politically active in Alabama but has no Wikipedia article. Appleton's rejected the draft as arguing constitutional law instead of setting out history, and when Davis said he really hadn't supervisedthe man, Appletons sent out William Jewett Tenney, who does have a Wikipedia article, although without any sources nor mention of his politics or that ghostwriting. At least I can read birth and death years from Walthall's pictured gravestone, and if I or someone posts a Wikipedia article for him, the Davis book entry might be more intelligible, as would be his civil war correspondence in Wikimedia.

Sorry if this sounds like venting, but I've also gotten a couple of no message phone callstoday presumably from strangers. The first came after 2-911 calls on the highway dropped without showing in my phone log as I attempted to report an unsafe driver, and when I parked and attemptedto txt the number, my carrier said it didn't exist; the second call came minutes after my morning Wikipedia edit to the Jefferson Davis talk page. In April 2014 a guy representing a sleazy group of attorneys and real estate investors promised to continue to harass me including via phone and cyber until I "shut up online". Taiwan earthquakes in 2018

I understand only those big earthquakes shall be made its articles, e.g. those more than 5 or 6 magnitude with big casualties. But I was just thinking where to list down the complete lists of the main earthquake and all of its subsequent aftershocks or smaller earthquakes (less than 5 or 4 magnitudes). It should be listed somewhere (with data & time sequencing of its occurrence) because these data are important enough for 中央氣象局 to release to the public to predict whether another bigger earthquake is waiting to happen anytime soon. e.g. as what was described in this news article (http://focustaiwan.tw/news/asoc/201802070025.aspx). @Chongkian: I first learned about earthquake notability by looking into the situation after this edit. I tried to be concise in my edit summary, but still almost ran out of room. What I meant to suggest is that if reliable sources describe lesser seismic activity as aftershocks of a larger event, then it should be included in the article about the main quake. However, other editors may regard mentioning aftershocks trivial or routine because they are too small, or did not cause significant damage. Because I do not often edit about natural disasters, perhaps another editor with more experience in that area will opine if you reach out via related talk pages, for instance Talk:2018 Hualien earthquake. Zanhe Thanks for bringing those Worldcat errors to my attention, although I admit I do not know what to do. I reviewed them and confirmed that they are wrong, but the other links included in {{authority control}} for those those articles (VIAF, LCCN, GND) are not incorrect. As such, I believe they should not be removed from Wikidata. Perhaps a new section should be started at WP:VIAF/errors just for worldcat inaccuracies. They are two different individuals separated by almost 50 years. The English article concerns a military figure and war veteran born in 1899. To be honest, I haven't learned much of anything about main page processes in my time here, and usually end up pleasantly surprised that any of my contributions end up on the main page, every time because some other editor has nominated (and improved) them. as I and another experienced reviewer has found, this nomination was not correct. what you had was enough to show likely notability. But there's a continued problem with some of your articles. It is not a good idea to just write the minimum. I almost deleted Chen Lan-bo before I checked google scholar and found that he unquestionably met wp;prof. I know enough that someone in academia sinica is very likely to have quite impressive publication--and there's a good chance just membership in that academy is enough to pass wp:prof Many new editors here are not aware of the detail of our notability rules and our criteria for speedy, and the complicated way we interpret them. therefore, an article has to show enough of the person's career, that they will understand the importance. You focused this one on his comments on various political events, and his involvement in some new companies, but there is no particular significance to that. You should have added at least the dates of his appointments, the specific area he worked in, and the most cited papers from google scholar.

If you do not add sufficient material it makes work for the very small number of overworked people who do the reviewing and the deleting. It takes time to check an article listed for deletion when it isn't obvious, and it takes time to fix it. You as the first contributor should be doing that. DGG ( talk ) 22:34, 1 January 2019 (UTC)

With regards to Chen Lan-bo, a sourced claim to WP:NACADEMIC#3 was present in the article upon creation. His political and business activity does seem pertinent, but I worried about WP:COATRACKING. @Finney1234: The use of article talk pages to discuss article space is correct, as is the use of user talk space to contact fellow editors. Some editors have email accounts linked to their Wikipedia accounts, but each editor chooses whether or not to directly answer emails relating to Wikipedia. As such, talk page use is the recommended course of action to initiate and maintain contact.

Regarding Ferguson and DYK, I've just recently started contributing to DYK, so I know I am in fact not the best person to ask about the steps to take there. As far as I can tell, you've done everything correctly, and can only wait for review. I am unsure about doing the review myself because I have moved the page to article space and cleaned it up some, though I've contributed no new text. Mangelsen

I appreciate your intent, but you really should not move another editor's article Thomas D. Mangelsen without notifying them first. Usually, page moves like this go through a consensus phase first. There is a process for moving pages that you can institute. Also, MOS:INITIALS doesn't apply to article titles actually but to referring to the subject in the article. And moving a page while it is in DYK is very disruptive. It also breaks many wikilinks at a time that is most inconvenient, most of all links inside the DYK template. @Dawnleelynn: Thank you for contributing to DYK. I apologize for not letting you know about the move in subsequent edits. Perhaps leaving a link to WP:INITS would have been a better edit summary for the move. During the move, a redirect was left from the old article title to the new one. There should be no broken redlinks, as all previous mentions of the old title should redirect to the current title. If there are redlinks, let me know, and I will fix them. Additionally, when I removed Mangelsen's YouTube channel from the artcle's external links section, I left a wikilink to WP:ELMINOFFICIAL. His official site already links to his YouTube channel as well as his Facebook, Instagram, and Pintrest profiles, so those social media links are unnecessary. My first message here was too brusque; I was annoyed. I think it would have been sufficient to point out the policy and suggest checking talk pages out before making major changes to an article. Also, I see you removed two diffusing categories, thanks.

However, I have been thinking over this article move and the DYK process. It just occurs to me that when the DYKBot runs to give my article credit after it is over, it will try to update my article using the old name. Yoninah was able to adjust the nomination template so that it could be edited again. Yoninah also made an adjustment to the nomination template so the bot that gives the credit for the DYK would be able to do so after the DYK was done running. Now the article title appears correctly in the nomination template except for one label. Anyway, it should be obvious going forward that checking the talk page should be a step in the process before making major changes to an article. There are other processes that it would be best to wait on in addition to DYKs. Also, FAs (and probably GAs too) would be a case where a page move should be discussed first. You wouldn't want to do a page move on a page where a page move request was in process on the talk page. There could be an article split request, an article merge request, etc. I'm sure you get the idea. I learned some good things today, thanks. dawnleelynn^(talk) 04:41, 26 February 2019 (UTC) p.s. @Dawnleelynn: I've taken a look at the fix to the Mangelsen nomination template, which does not seem complex, and I will remember to adjust nomination templates in that manner when necessary. I reread the nomination before the fix was applied and noticed no glaring grammar issues. If a resulting redirect did not make sense, I would have piped it. The introduction to Wikipedia:Requested moves states that the process should be used for technical reasons, undiscussed moves or controversial moves. WP:INITS is part of the English Wikipedia naming conventions for people, and MOS:INITS is a component of the English Wikipedia Manual of Style. Both the naming conventions and the manual of style are guidelines. Following such guidelines is an action backed by longstanding consensus and presumably is not controversial. Starting a requested move to rehash naming conventions or the manual of style would have resulted in a kindly reminder similar to this. However, in the Mangelsen case, the use of WP:RMTR would be unnecessary because there was nothing blocking a move to the title containing a full stop and any autoconfirmed editor could have performed it. Okay, you almost got me to the correct policy now. Let me just take it home for you. First of all, you tried to use the MOS:INITIALS policy to prove that a middle name initial should have a period after it. But if you read this portion in context with the rest of the page, it falls under the lead section of an article as part 1. It then mentions 2.1 First mention and then 2.3 Initials. So it is not talking about an article title here but the body of the article. You were right about the initials but trying to get the proof from the wrong policy.

Okay, now that we got that straight, I tried to use the policy I quoted back to you to show that there isn't anyplace that requires the middle initial to have a period, namely this policy Wikipedia:Requested moves. And it doesn't say the period is required. However, the new policy you sent me this evening does make things clearer, and I have not seen it before. There are so many policies! LOL Anyway, I ignored MOS:INIT again as stated before it only applies to the body of an article. But paid specific attention to your new link to WP:INITS. Which led me to the following policy Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Biography#Initials which gives very specific instructions about using initials in names for article titles. This policy is what you want to use the next time around. In the case of Mangelsen, this applies: "Use initials in a personal name[b] only if the name is commonly written that way."

Regarding WP:RMTR, a move request can also be done solely on the talk page. See Talk:Built_Ford_Tough_Series#Requested move 27 January 2018. You never know when a page move might be controversial.

Regarding your comment, " I will remember to adjust nomination templates in that manner when necessary." Why would that be necessary? Surely you don't intend to do any more page moves or other major actions while articles are in DYK? Anyway, you persevered, and we finally found the right policy. @Dawnleelynn: The Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Biography#Initials link above is the long form of the MOS:INITIALS link I originally left in my edit summary. That same manual of style section also says "An initial is capitalized and is followed by a full point (period) and a space (e.g. J. R. R. Tolkien), unless:

• the person demonstrably has a different, consistently preferred style for his or her own name; and
• an overwhelming majority of reliable sources use that variant style for that person." The listed caveats did not seem to apply to Mangelsen because I also provided links to YouTube videos uploaded to his account that includes titles with a full stop in his name. Okay, try reading that section sometime and see how it consistently talks about content in the body of the article from top to bottom. From the Lead Section down to Authority Control. It's talking about how to address people in the article itself. First it talks about how to address them at the first mention, then in reoccurring mentions, etc. It talks about how they should be addressed in the lead sentence, etc.

From that same section you quoted me, here's another quote right after that: "In article text, a space after an initial (or an initial and a full point) and before another initial should be a non-breaking space: J. R. R. Tolkien (or use the   template). This even works inside links: J. R. R. Tolkien, though only with   markup, not the template."

Even better, as these INITIALS policies seem confusing, I found Wikipedia:Article titles which showed me Manual_of_Style#Article_titles which is so much clearer. It says "Capitalize the initial letter (except in rare cases, such as eBay), but otherwise follow sentence case[a]." Which is very clear it's talking about article titles. But it also makes your other point, "Subject both to the above and to WP:Article titles, the rest of the MoS, particularly § Punctuation, applies also to the title." @Floyd1965: I moved the page, per Wikipedia's naming conventions on companies and disambiguation as well as WP:NCA. Page moves automatically create redirects that can usually be left alone. If you feel strongly that the redirect should be deleted, make the case at redirects for discussion or see if any of the speedy deletion criteria regarding redirects apply. Can help to expand the biography of Justin Huang? Parts which are still missing/incomplete are his early career life (after graduation before entering politics at National Assembly), his general works during his tenure in Legislative Yuan (i've added all of his 3 legislative election results for easy navigation/timeline-based sections), his detailed works during Taitung County Magistrate (as in what policies he proposed and works carried out during his terms). We need to fully write this one first before focusing on any of his scandals as suggested by other editors in the talk page of that article regarding the Miramar Resort thingy. @Zanhe: No problem. I am not good with the AfC helper script, and don't do reviews for that reason. However, it isn't the first time I've seen duplicate drafts. See Talk:Aleksandr Nikitenko, for instance. Could a maintainer add a function to the script to look for those? Jinjiang–Kinmen Pipeline

Hi Vycl1994,

I've just created this article named Jinjiang–Kinmen Pipeline, another cross-strait relations's milestone in terms of joint-project development (after the submarine telecommunication cable construction between Kinmen and Xiamen in 2013). However, I couldn't really find what is the official name (Taiwan's or Mainland China's version) of this project in zh language, so I just choose Jinjiang-Kinmen Pipeline, putting the origin and destination city/town's name of the pipeline. @WikiGeoffrey: When did I remove links? The {{ill}} (the interlanguage link) template provides links to foreign language Wikipedia articles, when those articles exist. For instance clicking on "ja" in Randy Taguchi leads to ja:田口ランディ, and the redlink Randy Taguchi shows that an English Wikipedia article about that subject does not yet exist. I provided an interlanguage link for every redlink I made. Six writers are listed here, and those six writers remain here, so I did not remove any links. In my edit I also removed the native names of the authors reasoning that, English Wikipedia readers are not expected to be fluent in Japanese, so listing Japanese language names in articles not about the authors themselves is too much detail. As an example, the English article Shinzō Abe gives his name 安倍 晋三 because that information is important about Abe. The Abe article's link to Shigeru Ishiba appears to be "Shigeru Ishiba," not "Shigeru Ishiba (石破 茂)." Vycl1994 (talk) 18:38, 28 April 2019 (UTC)

Thanks, Vycl1994 . This is my misunderstanding. What I am trying to do is provide links to both the profiles some of these authors have in English and Japanese, trying to be helpful. I know many people/translators often want to search on the Japanese names and English names. We should follow the right Wikipedia etiquette on this.
