Fergus Loch

Hi Rosser1954 I wondered why you had altered 'Fergus Loch' (just east of Ayr) to 'Loch Fergus' at List of lochs in Scotland? Ordnance Survey maps show the place as 'Fergus Loch' - a pattern in common with the majority of other loch names in the district. cheers Geopersona (talk) 21:12, 16 May 2011 (UTC)

Hello. I found no older references that used 'Fergus Loch' and the OS is known for the many errors that it has perpetuated. I did not find any Ayrshire, home grown, usages of the FL term in print. The earliest reference uses Loch Fergus - http://maps.nls.uk/atlas/blaeu/view/?id=85. A quick look at the older maps show an almost random use of Loch name or name loch. The farm is known as Lochfergus. Roy also uses LF - http://geo.nls.uk/roy/. The 25 inch calls it Loch Fergus.http://geo.nls.uk/os25inch/ I think that RCAHMS almost uniquely use FL. Dalrymple lochs

In the Carcluie Loch and Lindston Loch, South Ayrshire pages the Lindston Loch Wildlife Site reference goes to a google search page, and the intended reference is not obvious. Also, there is some duplication between the two articles, and I wonder if some text (Natural History sections) from the latter has been mistakenely incorporated in the former. I was recently hunting for typos of "return", namely "retrun", and found a hit on Ellisland Farm. My trouble is that you were adding a quote ([3]) from a reference that I don't have access to, so I'm hesitant to change the text as it may be exactly what the reference says. On why Roughwood was labeled Raewood

As part of difficult genealogical research on the surname Raywood (because my line is Irish, not English), I went looking for any historic location named Raewood. This led me to your article on Roughwood here because in it you report that Roughwood was [inexplicably?] labeled 'Raewood' by cartographer Andrew Armstrong here in his 1775 map of Ayrshire. And of course the descriptive aspect 'rough' has been variously rendered 'ruch' and 'rouch' on other old maps of Ayrshire, each time meaning 'difficult terrain', as can be verified here (definition 5, with 'ruch' as the search term).

Now, from among the several possible meanings of 'rae', found here with 'rae' as the search term, none of them approximate the meaning 'rough', and none of them appear to find general use this late. Meanwhile, all reasonably modern uses of the term prove to mean 'row' and nothing else, at least in Irish Gaelic, as can be seen here or here, etc. So why it is that Andrew Armstrong opted for the use of 'rae' in 1775 remains entirely unclear. I was hoping that your access to the local historical context might provide you with some insight on the matter.

In A Dictionary of Archaic and Provincial Words, Obsolete Phrases, Proverbs, and Ancient Customs, from the 14th Century, Vol. II, J-Z, James Orchard Halliwell, 1847, I uncovered an utterly antiquated use of the term 'raugh' to connote 'a tortuous course', which definitely fits the descriptive aspect at issue here. But if anything it more fits perhaps into the history of the word 'rough' than it does into a 1775 usage. Plus since Mr. Halliwell did not entertain of an orthography in this opus, instead spelling all terms in the upper case, there's no grave accent on 'raugh' (or, for that matter, a comparative lack of one) by which to determine a long or short vowel sound. These obvious difficulties leave the matter far from resolved.

In looking for an authoritative orthological source for the period, the nearest I got was Alexander Stewart's 1812 Elements of Gaelic Grammar. On p5 of that opus he explains the diphthong 'ae' to be in rare usage and that it may represent either a long or short vowel sound. So at least we know that the 'ae' of Raewood may have sounded like 'au' in Gaul, which of course lends itself to what we might expect of 'raugh'. Unfortunately however, neither Stewart here nor A Practical Grammar of the Scottich Gaelic, James Munro, 1843, provides a pronunciation for 'au'. This brings back into question the likelihood 'raugh' was even used in 18th century Scotland. Was it however used in Britain? If so, and since our cartographer Andrew Armstrong was likely an Englishman, what we may be seeing on his part here is either the influence of cultural bias or a bit of display (showing off etymological knowledge), that is, in his using 'raugh' instead of 'rough' (since they do carry the same weight of meaning). But even if this explains why 'raugh' might be voiced in 1775, it does not explain why it would be written 'rae' except, perhaps, that a Scottish scribe in hearing 'raugh' (and being unfamiliar with it, because it wasn't a Scottish term?) wrote down 'rae'. But even here, wouldn't Armstrong have noted the error before penning it in? In all, to say the least, this is a very curious matter. I hope you are able to enjoy making inroads into its demystification.

Etymology is a minefield indeed!

You may be interested in the following - Dobie relates that On 31 May 1638, Gabriel Porterfield purchased from Neil Ryburn of that Ilk the 13s 4d. land of old extent of Ryburn, commonly called Temple-Ryburn. The estate of Hapland consisted of Brokwelmure (Brockwellmuir), Dunlophill-Montgomerie and Ryburn; later part of Lainshaw was purchased as well.

The Laird of Hapland was the ruling elder in the Parish of Dunlop in 1649 and was a captain in the Scots army when Cromwell was in Scotland, for which his lands were sequestrated. The last of the male line died when he fell off his horse when returning from Stewarton about 1765 or 1770. Lillias Porterfield married William Somerville of Kennox. Their youngest child, a daughter, married Colonel McAlester, Laird of Loup, in Kintyre. A descendent built Chapelton House near Stewarton. Hapland is near Dunlop. In 1820 the estate was of 200 acres (0.81 km2) and the proprietor was Lieutenant-General Alexander Trotter. The old mansion house was demolished around 1876 as it was not in keeping with the modern age.[58] A new steading was built at the site, possibly the 'Newhouse' marked on the OS maps. Some of the old tree wind-breaks and policies of the estate can still be made out. It seems likely that Temple-Ryburn had its name changed to Hapland at around this time as the OS of 1858 shows Ryburn in the same position as later maps (1897, etc.) show Hapland.

Request for an Interview

Hi Rosser1954,

I recently sent you a message about Port Carlisle railway station.

I am a researcher at Carnegie Mellon University examining how to make interaction in Wikipedia more effective. Our research has shown that certain types of feedback encourage Wikipedians to edit more while others seem to discourage them. Experienced and less experienced Wikipedians seem to have different reactions to very similar feedback. I am interested in interviewing you about your reaction to the message I sent you. A discussion with you will help us better understand the types of feedback that can encourage newcomers's participation to Wikipedia without turning off old-timers.

I can talk with you via online chat, on Skype, over the phone, or just through Wikipedia messages if you are more comfortable with that. The interview should take take less than 60 minutes. You do need to be over 18 years old, and consent to be a part of the study in order to for me to interview you. This study has been approved by Carnegie Mellon's research ethics committee (the IRB), and the Wikipedia Research Committee.

1. What did you think the message meant?

One doesn't normally get messages like this and it seemed very clear that someone from outside the Wiki fraternity was researching/experimenting in some way.

2. How accurate was the messages?

It seemed like a 'good cop, bad cop' situation. Be overly positive and then add the negative. I feel that the standard format that your team agreed to in the research proposal limited the flexibility of your approach.

3. You say that you refrained from "reacting to the Americanisms - Have a nice day, etc." Previous research done by my (Chinese) colleague shows that these types of comments may be very influential in keeping members active in an online community. What do you think are social influences that encourage Wikipedians to interact with each other?

It might be my age and background. Such expressions are too overt and therefore meaningless in the context. It almost seems like a snide comment designed to show a form of assumed superiority. Such comments as 'good luck', 'hope it goes well' etc might suit the GB market better.

4. What do you think of this part of the message - "However, I think the article seems to contain a few errors: the article currently does not have appropriate sections and headings."?

Errors - I wondered how 'you' could know of any - factual errors?

I am too enthusiastic about the content to worry too much about Wiki's complex rules. I have discovered from looking at editors profiles that many write very few articles and like to edit other people's work. I feel that if the article has 'protocol' problems then others will find their niche in sorting it out.

5. What do you think of this part of the message - "It would be great if you could also improve the related article Drumburgh."?

Very odd to be asked to contribute to another article which was not really related in theme or content. I don't know the area - I did enjoy researching it and writing it up. I often feel sorry for the obscure and add an article if it turns out to be interesting.

6 Was the message different from other messages you get from Wikipedia?

Very different.

7. How do the message make you feel?

Intrigued. I went to your profile and then read more at the village Pump, etc. Can't say that I understood your research spec - the language might well be a candidate for the 'Plain English Society' to sort out :-)

8 Here is what we found.

a) This type of message has larger effects on newcomers than experienced editors.

They feel very unsure and may panic and leave. I was lucky to start with good and measured responses from most folk.

b) Some experienced editors were less likely to change their previous edits after receiving negative feedback. An example negative feedback is "However, I think the article seems to contain a few errors: the article currently does not have appropriate sections and headings.".

Too busy? Also the thoughts about the Wiki ecosystem and the niche of those who like to edit.

c) Some experienced editors made fewer edits after receiving directive messages. An example of direction is "It would be great if you could also improve the related article Drumburgh.".

Don't like being told what to do? I took pity on the tiny article stub and I also live by the belief that most things are interesting once you research them - apart for Wiki rules that is :-)

Do you have explanations for these findings?

Just a reminder

When you create an article that contains latitude and longitude values in {{Infobox UK disused station}}, don't include a {{Coord}} template as well. Doing so displays overlapping coordinates in the "title" position (albeit the same coordinates in the cases of yours I've seen), and the infobox template itself includes code that adds the correct region and type parameters. If you make it a common practice to copy others' work and pass it off as your own (or as Wikipedia's own) I strongly recommend you stop doing it now and forever more, and further, I suggest that you go back and delete or reword all instances of such plagiarism and violations of copyright law. Good day to you. I see that you are getting a bit hot under the collar regarding some of my articles. I will read the 'rules' more thoroughly regarding the problem you are pursuing. My articles are factual and I feel that examples such as the one you have just highlighted are a bit extreme. Are you saying that the word order of a short, factual and referenced statement is really exploting someone elses intellectual property?

I have produced over 450 articles and I have no idea how I can go about checking such perceived infringments on such a scale. I look forward to hearing from you again in a constructive and less pugnacious style. I feel that I deserve a little respect and assistance for what are actually altruistic efforts to date. My dear chap, I do not and would not copy others 'work' without acknowledgment - why would I. I find that comment frankly offensive - no doubt Wikipedia has rules that prevent you from making such allegations which are without substance and seek to insult. Legal action will not occur from a few words which are factual and set in a logical sequence. I note that you did further work on my 'Cobweb painting' article even after I had rewritten it. You may be compulsive and obsessive. Useful in some situations - perhaps a little over the top here. You may not like my 'hot under the collar' comment - however you dismiss my comments on improving Wikipedia. You alone seem to feel that I have polluted Wikipedia. Get some sleep and do nothing for 36 hrs - then decide if I am a problem. If I am, then tell me how I can fix the problem - something your belligerent comments did not address. Your editing pattern is being discussed at Wikipedia talk:Copyright problems. The problem is fully yours, not Jojalozzo's. Wikipedia comes down hard on people who copy text from copyrighted sources, even if those sources are cited. Copied text must be in quotes to signify that it is taken verbatim from the source, and such quotes are to be used sparingly. Yes, it is up to you to go back through your contributions to find and correct each instance. Doing so, or at least assisting, will restore the community's faith in your contributions. I wouldn't want to be misunderstood as criticising your videos, the effort you have put into them, or your good faith in linking to them. But I am uneasy about aspects of what you are doing. Specifically;

• Adding external links to your own web content (in this case your Youtube channel) is generally considered a a conflict of interest, or even spamming.

Thank-you for your civil tone - not something always encountered. I have written over 500 articles on Wikipedia and tiring of some Admin I decided to rarely produce new articles and occupy myself instead by adding visual enhancement. The award of a Barnstar encouraged me that I was on the right track. I don't tend to express opinions, rather I read up on the topic and recount what I have found out from research. Where it is linked to one of my articles it can be clearly seen that the facts are the same. I have written many articles on railway stations - no room for opinions here - just dates and facts. History articles also benefit from my large collection of books on various topics. I am also an elected Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries - one of the oldest and most respected in the United Kingdom and beyond.

I avoid personal references and those made about living persons. My sound track is often restricted to simple statements of place, time, etc. I try to record the present for the future - a chronicler by nature. I have well over 5000 Wikimedia photographs which I use in much the same way as the videos. When I make mistakes in the sound track I correct them with highlighted annotations.

I followed your links and I hope that these comments will inform your decision about what you will do next. Lands of Tour and Kirkland

I used "random article" and landed on your article written in December on the Lands of Tour and Kirkland. I noticed that the first reference is to a dictionary about the meaning of the word "tour" and that none of the reference mention Tour or Kirkland in the titles, and so I searched for the phrase "Tour and Kirkland" to find more online. On Google, Google Books and Google Scholar I cannot find a use of the phrase "Lands of Tour and Kirkland" or "Tour and Kirkland" outside Wikipedia mirrors. I can find "Tour and Kirklands" used in two mid-19th century books on Ayrshire by James Paterson. Is there a source beside Paterson that uses this name, and is the current name of the article accurate?

As far as I can see the 'Copyright' violation you have correctly brought to my attention dates from around 2008 - a quick look at my recent edits seems to show no violations since I was made aware of the full extent of copyright. When I was notified in 2013 of such violations I offered to go back and correct them and was told that this was not for me to undertake - at least that's how I understood it. Mount Stewart & Dunduff

Dear Sir. I hope I address myself to the right person. I recently read the article about Mount Stewart in Co. Down. Interestingly, it refers to the article Dunduff Castle. This reference appears in the first item of the list under the heading "See also" and reads somewhat laconically:

*Dunduff Castle, South Ayrshire, property of the ancestors of the Stewarts of Mount Stewart

No reference is cited to substantiate the claim "ancestors of the Stewarts of Mount Stewart". I tried to find out who added this line and this led me here. The article about Dunduff Castle mentions a Mount Stewart but it also states:

Mount-Stewart in Donegal should not be confused with Mount Stewart in County Down, Northern Ireland, which was latterly the home of the Vane-Tempest-Stewart family, Marquesses of Londonderry.

This Mount-Stewart in Donegal seems to be (or have been) at Coolaghy, SE of Raphoe according to the article about Dunduff. It just happened twice that members of that Stewart family had the idea to call a family residence "Mount Stewart". It looks likely that Alexander Stewart, the father of the 1st Marquess of Londonderry, was related to the Stewarts that owned Dunduff in the 17th centenary, but can it be justified to plainly say "ancestors of the Stewarts of Mount Stewart" or should a more cautious formulation be adopted? If this ancestry is sufficiently likely or proven, it should also be mentioned in the articles about Alexander Steward (1699-1781) and the Marquess of Londonderry title. A reliable reference would of course be invaluable. The marquesses of Londonderry have certainly claimed to be of Scottish descent but none of them seems have claimed that his ancestors were lairds of Dunduff. If you agree that this article and the article Glen Douglas railway station should be merged, I believe that the protocol is that the latter should be merged into the former, as the earlier article. Could you action this, please as my experience of editing is not great!

This leaves outstanding the question of the name of the post-merger article. For the reasons stated on the talk page I think that the inclusion of the word "siding" is incorrect: the siding came 1 year after the station. The fact that the word "siding" appears on an old OS map does not prove it was part of the name of the station in my opinion. I have been advised that in accordance with WP:COMMONNAME the most recent name should be used. This is "Glen Douglas Halt", the name used at closure as a station. I used the simple "Glen Douglas" because that is the name by which it is currently known or at least the passing place is, as evidenced by a name plate currently on the signal there. As far as I remember, the signal box, when it was there, was also called simply "Glen Douglas", but I cannot provide a citation for this. I do not feel strongly about the inclusion or otherwise of the word "Halt".

I'm not sure exactly what action was taken but it is not sufficient to copy and paste from article to another. Stables at Cunninghamhead

Proper name is the "Stables". This is per the title deeds. With respect, this is the true reference to this building. Also, having seen the interior condition of the building I can discuss it's material condition with some authority.

Also, please do not over look that siginificant changes have been made to Cunninghamhead Estate recently with it's redevelopment to a retirement caravan site. Trees relatively unique to Ayrshire, hundreds of years old, have been cut down. Again, please respect comments made on this.

Corsehill, Lainshaw, Robertland and Dunlop article

Hi, this is a good standard of article, I feel as a suggestion that the introduction should make what the article actually refers to a little clearer however. I live in Ayrshire so I know that these are areas of land, but if you can imagine someone from half way across the globe in the U.S or Australia reading this article they would be quite clueless I'm sure! It's not particularly clear that we're talking about land, far less historical boundaries in Scotland so I think it would be helpful if a sentence or two were added at the start such as "Corsehill, Lainshaw, Robertland and Dunlop were traditional areas of land in the modern county of East Ayrshire in Scotland". Wikipedia is after all a global encyclopedia and the intention is that you can read any article without any background knowledge, so the very first thing the article should do is explain what it's referring to (even if this is obvious) - e.g "A pen is a writing device used to dispense ink onto a piece of paper".

I would add this but I'm not entirely sure on how one would classify the lands of Corsehill etc, myself! Yes, you type four tildes (~~~~); before you do that, however, you must change what is in the Signature section of the Preferences. If you want it to show as it currently does, you need to type something like [[User:Rosser1954|Rosser Gruffedd]], which will "magically" change into Rosser Gruffedd when you sign. Then put a tick in the little box marked Treat the above as wiki markup. The date and time are added automatically when you sign. Look on this page for clearer instructions.
