Counter Vandalism Training

Hi, I saw that you have no slot left for counter vandalism unit. Same applies for the other two trainers. But, i hope you can inform if you can still train me. Just wanted to add that I have a quite busy schedule due to GCEs and I might be a bit slow in finishing up my course. But I hope you will try to train me, if you have a slot available anytime. Thanks, Knightrises10 (talk) 15:26, 18 August 2018 (UTC)

I just read previous requests that have been rejected by you, as you remain busy. So, sorry. I am going to ask another trainer. Have a good day Knightrises10 (talk) 20:16, 18 August 2018 (UTC)

(edit conflict) Hi Knightrises10. It seems like you're already familiar with patrolling recent changes and reverting vandalism on Wikipedia. You have the rollback permission already, and it seems that you already know how to report vandals to AIV, UAA, and I can see CSD tagging in your contributions as well. It seems like you've already got a good grip on the content of the course just learning by yourself, and I think the course would just repeat what you may already know. We can continue with the course if you want, but I'm not sure how helpful it would be to you.   Do you have any specific things you want to know more about regarding reverting vandalism on Wikipedia? Mz7 (talk) 20:19, 18 August 2018 (UTC)
Hi, thanks for telling. I just started reverting vandalism recently. I thought that I might learn something more, or something which i do not know about. If you think that I do not need training and should continue like this, then I will. Thanks once again. And by the way, I use twinkle at the moment, and haven't been granted rollback rights yet. Knightrises10 (talk) 20:49, 18 August 2018 (UTC)
@Knightrises10: Oh, sorry for not seeing that. You should remove the topicons at the top of your user page:
{{Huggle topicon}} {{Extended confirmed topicon}}{{Reviewer topicon}}{{Rollback topicon}}{{New page reviewer topicon}}
I looked at these and assumed you had all the rights they refer to. Currently, you only have the "extended confirmed" right, so you can keep that topicon if you want. Mz7 (talk) 21:17, 18 August 2018 (UTC)
Sorry, I don't know how and when i added them. Just removed them.Knightrises10 (talk) 21:22, 18 August 2018 (UTC)
So do you think I don't need any training! Knightrises10 (talk) 21:24, 18 August 2018 (UTC)
@Knightrises10: It's up to you. If you want, I can create your student page, and we can get started (you can also withdraw at any time if you feel like it). We'd cover some stuff you've already tried out yourself, such as what is the difference between "vandalism" and "unhelpful good faith edits", how to warn and report users, the criteria for speedy deletion, when and how to request page protection. Alternatively, you can keep doing what you've been doing and just ask me questions if you're confused about something. Mz7 (talk) 17:23, 20 August 2018 (UTC)
Hi, I think you should create one for me since I remain a bit confused, especially when giving warnings. But will you please not mind if I am a bit delayed during exams or studies?Knightrises10 (talk) 06:20, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
@Knightrises10: Sure! I'm a little busy at the moment in real life, but I will definitely create your page this weekend! Mz7 (talk) 17:51, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. Knightrises10 (talk) 18:20, 22 August 2018 (UTC)

Hi! I am Just leacing this message as a reminder, in case you forget it. Knightrises10 (talk) 09:09, 25 August 2018 (UTC)

  • I just wanted to know that can I be given Pending Changes Reviewer rights? I feel I will be able to use them properly. I don't want the rollback rights at the moment, because I am not confident enough yet, and that's why I asked for the training.

Regards, Knightrises10 (talk) 18:33, 25 August 2018 (UTC)

Hi, Thanks a lot for granting me the rights. Just wanted to make sure that do we have to warn users whose pending changes have been reverted because they tend to be Vandalism? Knightrises10 (talk) 19:51, 25 August 2018 (UTC)

@Knightrises10: So sorry for the delay. Was really busy IRL. Here is your course page: User:Mz7/CVUA/Knightrises10. You should basically treat pending changes as you would any other edit; if you think you would have warned the user had it been just reverting an ordinary edit, then you should do so when reverting pending changes. Mz7 (talk) 00:50, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
Thanks a lot. I will start my training as soon as I get time. Knightrises10 (talk) 09:16, 27 August 2018 (UTC)

Hi, I have completed my first task.   Knightrises10 (talk) 17:10, 28 August 2018 (UTC)

Knightrises10, awesome! I'll take a look shortly. Mz7 (talk) 20:45, 28 August 2018 (UTC)
  • I have completed the next one too. Btw, should I just ping you there, or is it right to inform you here too? Knightrises10 (talk) 19:35, 29 August 2018 (UTC)
Knightrises10, I can see your pings there, so no need to inform me here too. Mz7 (talk) 19:55, 29 August 2018 (UTC)
  • In the next one, can I use twinkle for warning or should I use templates? Knightrises10 (talk) 02:11, 30 August 2018 (UTC)
Knightrises10, definitely use Twinkle, since it's more convenient. I showed you the templates in the course, but I guess that's a little too old-fashioned nowadays. They're there if you need them. Mz7 (talk) 08:20, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

I hope you have received my pings. Knightrises10 (talk) 07:02, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi. A different question not related to Vandalism. Do I meet the criteria for New Page reviewer? Or will I have to wait or do something?

Knightrises10 (talk) 15:22, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

@Knightrises10: You can find the criteria for new page reviewer at Wikipedia:New pages patrol/Reviewers#Guidelines for granting. In general, at least 500 undeleted edits to mainspace that clearly demonstrate knowledge of page quality control. According to this tool, you only have 379 edits to mainspace (i.e. to encyclopedia articles), so I'm afraid at this time it doesn't look like you meet the criteria for new page reviewer. Mz7 (talk) 01:25, 3 September 2018 (UTC)
  • Hi, can you tell me why my username is not getting tagged when i sign it using the four tildes on talk pages? Knightrises10 19:05, 5 September 2018 (UTC)
@Knightrises10: Check your Special:Preferences. I suspect you may have the checkbox "Treat the above as wiki markup." in the signature section checked – try unchecking that box (or modifying your custom signature so that it contains a link). Mz7 (talk) 22:46, 5 September 2018 (UTC)
Yes, that was the problem. Thanks :) Knightrises10 (talk) 01:59, 6 September 2018 (UTC)
  • Hi. I think you must be busy, isn't it? Because you didn't leave a feedback this time. I can understand your problem. So don't worry, I can wait until you are free. Thanks, Knightrises10 (talk) 09:23, 8 September 2018 (UTC)
Knightrises10, yes my mind has currently been on trying to get the policy proposals at Wikipedia talk:Interface administrators to pass, among real-life work. I apologize for the delay. Mz7 (talk) 09:33, 8 September 2018 (UTC)
I should have more time over the next few days, since it's the weekend. Mz7 (talk) 09:35, 8 September 2018 (UTC)

No problem  . I can wait. Knightrises10 (talk) 09:34, 8 September 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi, if you are a bit busy, you can check my answers later. But can you please answer the 2 probably small questions that i asked at the academy page? Thanks, Knightrises10 (talk) 19:12, 13 September 2018 (UTC)
  • When sometimes I notify users about deletion tags on their userpages or articles, Twinkle also adds a welcome message as you can see here;is it okay or will I have to change Twinkle preferences? Knightrises10 (talk) 20:44, 14 September 2018 (UTC)
Knightrises10, up to you. Some people think it's weird to welcome users you are warning about spam and decide it should be turned off. Personally, I don't really have a strong opinion on it. Mz7 (talk) 03:04, 15 September 2018 (UTC)
  • What is the policy of copying an article from another language Wikipedia, translating it in English through Google Translate, and then pasting it here at English Wikipedia? I hope I am not disturbing you a lot nowadays. Knightrises10 (talk) 14:13, 15 September 2018 (UTC)

Need Help

Hello Mz7. A Wikipedia:Teahouse HostBot recommended you on as the best experienced editor to help with new editors like me. I got questions; 1 (a). Am I allowed to edit other editor's articles without breaking the rules?

(b). In case I can edit other editor's work, what happens when I edit a banned or blocked users's article? Will my account be affected?

Thanks BetaN2 (talk) 08:15, 24 August 2018 (UTC)

Hi BetaN2, welcome to Wikipedia! This encyclopedia is a "wiki" – you can edit almost any article, even if you did not create it yourself. We encourage you to be bold! If you see something that needs fixing, feel free to jump right in and fix it yourself. We do have some rules that all editors should strive to follow (see Wikipedia:Five pillars for a list of our fundamental principles), but there is no rule against editing an article that someone else created. As a matter of fact, one of our rules is that no one "owns" any article. The articles belong to all of us, not any one particular editor or group of editors. For this reason, it is a little imprecise to say that any particular article belongs to a banned or blocked user – technically, the article belongs to no one. Ideally, your account should not be affected if you edit an article created by a blocked or banned user (unless, of course, you are somehow related to the blocked or banned user and editing in violation of the sock puppetry policy, which is our policy on using multiple accounts). Please let me know if any of this is confusing or if you have any other questions. Mz7 (talk) 08:48, 24 August 2018 (UTC)

I suggest closing this AFD

The AFD discussion on KSI vs Logan Paul has gone on for more than a month and since you've closed similar discussions in the past such as these ones, [2] [3] I think you'd be the right person to decide on this AFD discussion. 344917661X (talk) 21:16, 24 August 2018 (UTC)

Enrolling in CVU training ?

I was wondering how I would go about enrolling in counter-vandalism training? Zubin12 (talk) 22:54, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

@Zubin12: By asking on a trainer's talk page.   I'm a little busy in real life at the moment (and will probably be busy on all weekdays moving forward, so I apologize in advance for unexpected delays); however, I'd be willing to create a CVUA page for you this weekend, if you'd like. Mz7 (talk) 23:28, 30 August 2018 (UTC)
I would love for one of those pages, thanks for helping even though you are busy.Zubin12 (talk) 23:37, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – September 2018

  Interface administrator changes

  Guideline and policy news

  • Following a "stop-gap" discussion, six users have temporarily been made interface administrators while discussion is ongoing for a more permanent process for assigning the permission. Interface administrators are now the only editors allowed to edit sitewide CSS and JavaScript pages, as well as CSS/JS pages in another user's userspace. Previously, all administrators had this ability. The right can be granted and revoked by bureaucrats.

  Technical news

  • Because of a data centre test you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for up to an hour on 12 September and 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. The time when you can't edit might be shorter than an hour.
  • Some abuse filter variables have changed. They are now easier to understand for non-experts. The old variables will still work but filter editors are encouraged to replace them with the new ones. You can find the list of changed variables on mediawiki.org. They have a note which says Deprecated. Use ... instead. An example is article_text which is now page_title.
  • Abuse filters can now use how old a page is. The variable is page_age.

  Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee has resolved to perform a round of Checkuser and Oversight appointments. The usernames of all applicants will be shared with the Functionaries team, and they will be requested to assist in the vetting process. The deadline to submit an application is 23:59 UTC, 12 September, and the candidates that move forward will be published on-wiki for community comments on 18 September.

Please see this AN3 which I just closed. I tried a /18 range block which includes the single IP 109.144.215.115 that you blocked earlier today. Adding things to an article

WP:DENY Mz7 (talk) 16:11, 9 September 2018 (UTC)
The following discussion has been closed. Please do not modify it.

I want to add something to an article but two people and even one guy gathering a group of people backing up there claim on if something was relevant. But can seem to get through to them. If I edit the article then I could be banned. Please help me. Also block HorseareReal because she is vandalizing the Hurricane Irene page in the retirement section. The statement was proven relevant but they want to ignore me. Flasty Jam 2 (talk) 00:28, 9 September 2018 (UTC)

@Flasty Jam 2: HOW IN THE WORLD AN I VANDALIZING THE HURRICANE IRENE PAGE IN THE RETIREMENT SECTION? YOU’RE THE ONE VANDALIZING! In fact, YOU’RE the one who should be blocked for all the disruptive editing. And if your information is relevant, then you need to prove it! Also I am not a female. I’m male. Vandalism-only account

BeryAb (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) It's deliberate introduction of factual errors, i.e. vandalism, and it is with all probability not their first account (they sent me thanks through the messaging system after I posted the final warning, just to mock me...). Their very first edits, a series of three edits on Ethiopia, show they're adding made-up random numbers: first changing Gini from 33.6 to 6.8, then changing 6.8 to 6.6, and then changing 6.6 to 33.2, and in this edit on Denmark they changed HDI year and change from 2017/increase to 2018/decrease, without changing the number (which is an impossibility, if the number didn't change it would be level with the previous year, not a decrease...). And in their edits on Religion in Ethiopia that I provided a diff for in my AIV-report they changed the stats to totally random numbers. So I have absolutely no doubt about it being deliberate vandalism, just for fun. - Tom | Thomas.W talk 20:12, 14 September 2018 (UTC)

@Thomas.W: Thanks for this clarification. After reviewing your diffs, it does look like they are just randomly switching around numbers. I've blocked them on this basis. Mz7 (talk) 01:39, 15 September 2018 (UTC)

Should we protect this page?

A large number of IP edit this page Moeen Ali, changing birthplace from Azad Kashmir to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, although the former is the official name. I suspect this to be vandalism as PoK is a name used in India, and is considered offensive in Pakistan. Same as Indian-occupied Kashmir, a name given by Pakistan, is considered inappropriate in India. So I just wanted to know if a page protection should be needed. I did not request it since I was a bit unsure. Asking you will make me learn more. Regards - Knightrises10 (talk) 19:40, 15 September 2018 (UTC)

@Knightrises10: Unfortunately, I’m not an expert in this area, so I don’t think I’m the right person to talk to to determine whether this is vandalism. According to the Azad Kashmir article, there is a longstanding dispute between India and Pakistan regarding the territory—see the first footnote, which does mention the phrase PoK. I’m inclined to call this disruptive editing rather than vandalism, and I would be careful about 3RR. Page protection might be appropriate, since there seems to be a slow moving edit war about it, and “Azad Kashmir” seems to be the most stable and neutral version. Mz7 (talk) 02:32, 16 September 2018 (UTC)

I requested protection for disruptive edits, and it was then protected by an admin. Thanks for clarifying that it's disruptive edit. Knightrises10 (talk) 21:38, 20 September 2018 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.13 18 September 2018

Hello Mz7, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

The New Page Feed currently has 2700 unreviewed articles, up from just 500 at the start of July. For a while we were falling behind by an average of about 40 articles per day, but we have stabilised more recently. Please review some articles from the back of the queue if you can (Sort by: 'Oldest' at Special:NewPagesFeed), as we are very close to having articles older than one month.

Project news
As part of this project, the feed will have some larger updates to functionality next month. Specifically, ORES predictions will be built in, which will automatically flag articles for potential issues such as vandalism or spam. Copyright violation detection will also be added to the new page feed. See the projects's talk page for more info.
Other
Moving to Draft and Page Mover
  • Some unsuitable new articles can be best reviewed by moving them to the draft space, but reviewers need to do this carefully and sparingly. It is most useful for topics that look like they might have promise, but where the article as written would be unlikely to survive AfD. If the article can be easily fixed, or if the only issue is a lack of sourcing that is easily accessible, tagging or adding sources yourself is preferable. If sources do not appear to be available and the topic does not appear to be notable, tagging for deletion is preferable (PROD/AfD/CSD as appropriate). See additional guidance at WP:DRAFTIFY.
  • If the user moves the draft back to mainspace, or recreates it in mainspace, please do not re-draftify the article (although swapping it to maintain the page history may be advisable in the case of copy-paste moves). AfC is optional except for editors with a clear conflict of interest.
  • Articles that have been created in contravention of our paid-editing-requirements or written from a blatant NPOV perspective, or by authors with a clear COI might also be draftified at discretion.
  • The best tool for draftification is User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js(info). Kindly adapt the text in the dialogue-pop-up as necessary (the default can also be changed like this). Note that if you do not have the Page Mover userright, the redirect from main will be automatically tagged as CSD R2, but in some cases it might be better to make this a redirect to a different page instead.
  • The Page Mover userright can be useful for New Page Reviewers; occasionally page swapping is needed during NPR activities, and it helps avoid excessive R2 nominations which must be processed by admins. Note that the Page Mover userright has higher requirements than the NPR userright, and is generally given to users active at Requested Moves. Only reviewers who are very experienced and are also very active reviewers are likely to be granted it solely for NPP activities.
List of other useful scripts for New Page Reviewing

  • Twinkle provides a lot of the same functionality as the page curation tools, and some reviewers prefer to use the Twinkle tools for some/all tasks. It can be activated simply in the gadgets section of 'preferences'. There are also a lot of options available at the Twinkle preferences panel after you install the gadget.
  • In terms of other gadgets for NPR, HotCat is worth turning on. It allows you to easily add, remove, and change categories on a page, with name suggestions.
  • MoreMenu also adds a bunch of very useful links for diagnosing and fixing page issues.
  • User:Equazcion/ScriptInstaller.js(info): Installing scripts doesn't have to be complicated. Go to your common.js and copy importScript( 'User:Equazcion/ScriptInstaller.js' ); into an empty line, now you can install all other scripts with the click of a button from the script page! (Note you need to be at the ".js" page for the script for the install button to appear, not the information page)
  • User:TheJosh/Scripts/NewPagePatrol.js(info): Creates a scrolling new pages list at the left side of the page. You can change the number of pages shown by adding the following to the next line on your common.js page (immediately after the line importing this script): npp_num_pages=20; (Recommended 20, but you can use any number from 1 to 50).
  • User:Primefac/revdel.js(info): Is requesting revdel complicated and time consuming? This script helps simplify the process. Just have the Copyvio source URL and go to the history page and collect your diff IDs and you can drop them into the script Popups and it will create a revdel request for you.
  • User:Lourdes/PageCuration.js(info): Creates a "Page Curation" link to Special:NewPagesFeed up near your sandbox link.
  • User:Writ Keeper/Scripts/deletionFinder.js: Creates links next to the title of each page which show up if it has been previously deleted or nominated for deletion.
  • User:Evad37/rater.js(info): A fantastic tool for adding WikiProject templates to article talk pages. If you add: rater_autostartNamespaces = 0; to the next line on your common.js, the prompt will pop up automatically if a page has no Wikiproject templates on the talk page (note: this can be a bit annoying if you review redirects or dab pages commonly).

Go here to remove your name if you wish to opt-out of future mailings. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 23:11, 17 September 2018 (UTC)

Hembree (band)

Hi. On 20 September 2018, you closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Hembree (band) with a soft delete; yet the day before editor KCVelaga in this edit of 19 September 2018 removed the AFD notice saying AFD closed as no consensus (XFDcloser). What's going on? Looking at the article's references, it looks like a case of "lack of substantive coverage", but maybe arguable. Anyway, what happened? Hi Bejnar. Ah, I can see why your confused. KCVelaga originally closed the discussion as "no consensus". I thought that soft delete would be a better outcome, so after discussing it with KCVelaga, KCVelaga agreed to reopen the discussion, which I then closed as soft delete. A few hours after I closed the discussion as soft delete, Musicman211 (talk · contribs) requested that the article be undeleted at WP:REFUND, which administrator C.Fred granted. In summary: the AfD was closed as no consensus, was re-opened, then closed as soft-delete, then undeleted on request at WP:REFUND. Mz7 (talk) 04:26, 27 September 2018 (UTC)

Your essay User:Mz7/Core admin rights

Hey! I just read your essay. I had always thought that page protection rights could be a good choice. But after going through it, I have realized why it is not a good option and that it should remain with the administrators. I appreciate your thinking :-) Regards, Knightrises10 (talk) 10:33, 5 October 2018 (UTC)

  Technical news

  • Partial blocks should be available for testing in October on the Test Wikipedia and the Beta-Cluster. This new feature allows admins to block users from editing specific pages and in the near-future, namespaces and uploading files. You can expect more updates and an invitation to help with testing once it is available.
  • The Foundations' Anti-Harassment Tools team is currently looking for input on how to measure the effectiveness of blocks. This is in particular related to how they will measure the success of the aforementioned partial blocks.
  • Because of a data centre test, you will be able to read but not edit the Wikimedia projects for up to an hour on 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time.

  Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee has, by motion, amended the procedure on functionary inactivity.
  • The community consultation for 2018 CheckUser and Oversight appointments has concluded. Appointments will be made by October 11.
  • Following a request for comment, the size of the Arbitration Committee will be decreased to 13 arbitrators, starting in 2019. Additionally, the minimum support percentage required to be appointed to a two-year term on ArbCom has been increased to 60%. ArbCom candidates who receive between 50% and 60% support will be appointed to one-year terms instead.
  • Nominations for the 2018 Arbitration Committee Electoral Commission are being accepted until 12 October. These are the editors who help run the ArbCom election smoothly. If you are interested in volunteering for this role, please consider nominating yourself.

Counter Vandalism Training request

Hi, I see that you have a slot open for counter vandalism training. I currently use Twinkle a bit, and look at the 'Recent changes' page with a couple of filters to try and do my bit, but I'd be eager to learn how I could work more efficiently to make more of a difference. I'm in the UK, so quite far from your time zone, but you're the only person who's had a slot open in the last few weeks so I thought I'd ask. Would you be willing to help me learn the ropes? Thanks, GirthSummit (blether) 11:43, 14 October 2018 (UTC)

@Girth Summit: Let's do it. Just a heads up, I've been a little busy in real life lately, so I apologize in advance for delays in providing feedback on responses. I've created your course page at User:Mz7/CVUA/Girth Summit – the first questions are pretty basic: what is the difference between a good faith edit and vandalism? Let me know if you have any questions! Mz7 (talk) 22:37, 15 October 2018 (UTC)
Thanks! No worries about being busy - I'm happy to go along at a pace that works for both of us. I've had a look at the page you created, and it seems to make sense. I'll work on the questions, but I'll probably do it piecemeal as I gather the diffs it's asking for - I'll let you know when I'm done. Thanks again. GirthSummit (blether) 06:25, 16 October 2018 (UTC)
Done - please see my responses at User:Mz7/CVUA/Girth Summit. GirthSummit (blether) 12:47, 16 October 2018 (UTC)
Girth Summit, great! I'll take a look later today. Mz7 (talk) 23:23, 16 October 2018 (UTC)
I've finished responded to the next round of questions. (Is it useful for me to tell you here when I'm finished by the way?)GirthSummit (blether) 10:54, 18 October 2018 (UTC)
@Girth Summit: Sorry for my delay. In the future, feel free to just ping me by adding a link to my username in your responses at the course page (or by using the {{ping}} template). As you probably already know, this sends a notification to my user account, so you don't have to leave a user talk page message every time. You're responses have been much more in-depth than I'm used to seeing, and I really appreciate that!   I'll leave some feedback tonight. Mz7 (talk) 22:49, 19 October 2018 (UTC)
Understood - I'll ping you from the training page in future. Thanks! GirthSummit (blether) 23:55, 19 October 2018 (UTC)

Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months.

Hello Mz7, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

Backlog

As of 21 October 2018, there are 3650 unreviewed articles and the backlog now stretches back 51 days.

Community Wishlist Proposal
Project updates
  • ORES predictions are now built-in to the feed. These automatically predict the class of an article as well as whether it may be spam, vandalism, or an attack page, and can be filtered by these criteria now allowing reviewers to better target articles that they prefer to review.
  • There are now tools being tested to automatically detect copyright violations in the feed. This detector may not be accurate all the time, though, so it shouldn't be relied on 100% and will only start working on new revisions to pages, not older pages in the backlog.

Redeletion of page of A. Srinivasa murthy

Hello. This is a acquaintance of Mr srinivasa murthy and I would like you to redelete the page of Mr. Srinivasa murthy as I would like to make further changes to it and keep making regular updates of his projects. It would be of great help if you could restore the link to his page. The reference was from the nandi award winners for best male dubbing artists. Hes even donw few films now so which qualifies him for having a wiki page. Would be a great help of you if you could get back to me as soon as possible. Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nanisharma1 (talkcontribs)

@Nanisharma1: Hi. Instead of creating an article directly, I would suggest creating a draft first: Draft:A. Srinivasa Murthy, and go through process of WP:AFC. It will be lot more convenient. Also, kindly read WP:NCREATIVE. It is the notability guidelines applicable to Murthy. If you have any more doubts/questions, please feel free to ask. —usernamekiran(talk) 01:08, 27 October 2018 (UTC)

Your recent edits of the Gab wikipedia entry page in response to Edit Warring

Thanks for your application of the 'disputed content' label. I'm new to Wikipedia editing (only tried anonymously once or twice before) but have enjoyed using Wikipedia for years as well as contributed more than once financially in response to the annual pleas by the founder Jimmy Wales(?).

Now to my question: I tried to make two edits today to the Gab page. Both edits were reverted. Twice. Unreasonably in my opinion (see the history log). Not only is this discouraging to a would-be new contributor (perhaps that is the point?), it has somewhat lowered my estimation of Wikipedia's 'Neutral Point of View' several notches.

In reviewing the "Talk" page for Gab's entry, I see that I was a bit naive in thinking a simple entry by a newly registered user would correct this negative bias. My observations were not new, and the issue of bias has been discussed for some time. However, when I attempted to discuss potential modifications with the person who reversed my entry, their response was to allege 'sock puppet vandalism' etc. I find this unhelpful. Do you have recommendations on how to continue to contribute or should I just take the hint and write off Wikipedia?

Secondly, despite the label of 'current events may change rapidly' regarding the Synagogue shooting, mention of Gab's email to users reiterating Gab's opposition to violence of any kind has been deleted twice. This despite reference to Medium and NPR mention of the same statement. Only reason mentioned in the talk section? WP:RS. I understand the importance of avoiding 'Fake news' by relying on vetted sources, but in this case, not only did I have personal knowledge (received the email myself) but it was reported by NPR, so I find it ironic that fellow Wikipedia editors would block mention of it in a rapidly changing news area. In other words, this blockage of content favorable to Gab appears to indicate bias against Gab, and thus decreases Wikipedia credibility.

What would you recommend as a next step of resolution? No compromise or attempt to address my (or others) concerns of bias appears forthcoming, yet I don't want to engage in a Edit War if it will result in me being banned (although the effect of not being "BOLD" (per Wikipedia) is having the same affect as being banned. I welcome your honest insight. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DellAnderson (talkcontribs) 03:36, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

Hi DellAnderson, thanks for reaching out. I have to say, I think these kind of discussions are the most challenging areas of Wikipedia to work in. It can be discouraging even for experienced editors; I can only imagine how it must feel as a new editor. I also think the accusation of vandalism is unhelpful, and I'll note that a couple editors have given feedback on that issue on the article's request for page protection.
I think the best way forward at this stage is to participate in the discussions at Talk:Gab (social network) and other talk pages, and try to work towards a consensus for specific changes. I know it's frustrating to have your edits reversed by other editors, but I think the healthiest approach is to see them as fellow editors who also want to produce a neutral article that fairly and proportionately reflects what reliable sources say. I can see that the editor Grayfell has left a response to your most recent comment on the talk page. Continue discussing and see if there is middle ground for a consensus; Grayfell agreed that "Gab is a reliable source for Gab" (and I'll observe that the NPR source probably qualifies as a secondary source in this context). Their objection is now more along the lines of it being redundant to content already in the article.
As a side note, please try to sign your talk page comments by adding four tildes (~~~~) to the end of your comments. The software will automatically convert the tildes to your username and a timestamp when you submit your comment. All the best, Mz7 (talk) 04:34, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

Thanks so much Mz7. I apologize for the non-signature, it was a complete oversight. I tried to go back and add it but got an 'edit conflict' warning! Lesson learned. I will read editor Grayfell's response and give it some thought. I hope that fellow editors understand that I cannot always reply in real time and that the important thing is quality rather than speed. Thank you.DellAnderson (talk) 16:35, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

  • it meets one of the relevant criterion.
  • To provide a handy link that is short but comprehensive. Criterion for inclusion is a bit vague because there does not exist any documentation of that sort (other than huge pages).
  • Linking of edit-summary.
  • Most newcomers don't have an idea about what the edit-summary is and that it's highly prudential to use them. There was some research, (located at Meta but I am not getting it, at the moment), that asserted this.
  • and ping me.
  • This has been asked at the list of improvements to page-curation.We have a tendency to continue the same discussion at a part, venue, rather than jumping across t/p(s)
  • I will see whether it's possible to generate a ping template that can be plainly copied and pasted:-)WBGconverse 13:20, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

Editing through protection

You added a NPOV tag after protecting the article yourself. That is not something that administrators should do (WP:WRONGVERSION). Please restore the article to the state it was in when you protected it. Volunteer Marek 19:23, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

And actually, why in the world did you fully protect it? The problems were being caused by a few red linked accounts with just a few edits. Semi-protection would've been sufficient. Can you change it to semi please? Volunteer Marek 19:24, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

@Volunteer Marek: I added the NPOV tag because there were already neutrality concerns on the talk page made by other users that I wanted the edit-warring editors to participate in, not because I personally had an opinion on whether the article was neutral. At the time, I thought that this would have been fairly uncontroversial, but I can see where your objection is coming from as well (it looks like I might be taking a side). I'm at a loss because I also think there are outstanding NPOV disputes on the talk page, so I'm not sure removing the tag would be the best idea at the moment.
I fully protected the article because, in my view, there was a content dispute occurring between many different accounts, some of which are established users. Full protection was also suggested at RFPP. Now that talk page discussion is ongoing, and the editors that were reverting each other are now participating in it, I don't think it's a terrible idea to reduce it to semi-protection, leave a few warnings, and see what happens... I'll think about this over lunch. The goal here is to stop edit warring; do you think the edit war would resume if I lowered the protection at this point? Mz7 (talk) 20:05, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
I came to that article expecting edit wars, endless discussions that go nowhere and an onslaught of new accounts. I see none of that. Disruption in my experience comes from a small percent of editors who see wikipedia as a way to frame emerging narratives. They slant an article to favor one side, then editors from the other side push back and the situation escalates until blocks end up settling content disputes. It's a big waste of time and your quick protection circumvented all of that, so thank you. D.Creish (talk) 20:13, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
Can we add a warning like this to the talk page? D.Creish (talk) 21:39, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
@D.Creish: Are you referring to {{Ds/talk notice}}? It is possible, since discussions on that page relate to post-1932 politics of the United States—see WP:ARBAPDS. Mz7 (talk) 23:22, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
Yes, thanks. Have I done it right? D.Creish (talk) 02:49, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
@D.Creish: Looks fine. Mz7 (talk) 03:45, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

Mz7, it's not up to you to decide whether there are "neutrality concerns" on the talk page or not. Some "neutrality concerns" are just spurious WP:IJUSTDONTLIKEIT and by adding the tag you're making yourself WP:INVOLVED by taking a part in the dispute. Admins should NOT edit through protection that they themselves put in place except in cases of obvious vandalism or basic clean up.

As for full vs. semi protection, yes established accounts were "involved". That's because the "dispute" was "established accounts" vs. fly-by-night newly created accounts. It makes no sense to fully protect in such a situation. You're giving the disruptive accounts exactly what they want. Volunteer Marek 14:01, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

An automated process has detected that when you recently edited John Hughes' unrealized projects, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page John Hughes (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

II know it 'seems strange that the one body in WP in a position to apply IAR by the objective criterion of a vote has generally been unwilling to do so. Thinking back over previous discussions there, the detail in this close will be enough that it will guide how this is approached. (In earlier years, it might not even have done that, but this year's arb com is the most realistically flexible of the 4 I've experienced.) DGG ( talk ) 20:46, 10 November 2018 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.15 16 November 2018

Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months.

Hello Mz7,

Community Wishlist Survey – NPP needs you – Vote NOW
  • Community Wishlist Voting takes place 16 to 30 November for the Page Curation and New Pages Feed improvements, and other software requests. The NPP community is hoping for a good turnout in support of the requests to Santa for the tools we need. This is very important as we have been asking the Foundation for these upgrades for 4 years.
If this proposal does not make it into the top ten, it is likely that the tools will be given no support at all for the foreseeable future. So please put in a vote today.
We are counting on significant support not only from our own ranks, but from everyone who is concerned with maintaining a Wikipedia that is free of vandalism, promotion, flagrant financial exploitation and other pollution.
With all 650 reviewers voting for these urgently needed improvements, our requests would be unlikely to fail. See also The Signpost Special report: 'NPP: This could be heaven or this could be hell for new users – and for the reviewers', and if you are not sure what the wish list is all about, take a sneak peek at an article in this month's upcoming issue of The Signpost which unfortunately due to staff holidays and an impending US holiday will probably not be published until after voting has closed.
