Move proposal at 'Chink'

While I understand your motivation for closing the move proposal, I can't help feeling it was a little premature, and you seem to be adding your own arguments, rather than summarising other's comments in your closing post. This seems a little questionable, as it prevents others responding to your argument. Perhaps you should take another look?

I'd also suggest that you might want to rephrase this: "a spade's still a spade no matter what you call it". I'm sure it was entirely unintentional, but, to quote Wiktionary "spade... (offensive) A black person". [1] AndyTheGrump (talk) 14:53, 31 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

That was not my intention at all (the use of that phrase). I wasn't adding my own argument, it's my observation and summary of the arguments presented. Bard was predisposed to the article, a lot of the opposers were of the similar opinion and the outcome of the discussion was clear without doubt. —James (TalkContribs)10:07am 00:07, 1 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Wikimarkup lesson

I created a sandbox here. As you can tell, I've learned a lot about wikimarkup. I believe the copyright thing is the last item on the menu, so to speak. I'll take a look at it when I get more than just a few minutes on the computer (I have family over). TheTrainEnthusiast (talk) 23:47, 31 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Wow, I'm impressed at how far you've come in these 2-3 weeks, you've learnt a lot of the basics. Your story is quite interesting, I'm sure it was tiring to have had to do all that! About that image, click on "Upload a new version of this file" on the file description page, I see you requested it's deletion, nevermind then. Sorry I didn't respond earlier. —James (TalkContribs)4:33pm 06:33, 1 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. It took me awhile to get the page up (I pressed the "show preview" button a lot to make sure I didn't mess up.) Yes, it was very tiring to have to run all those places, but as long as I was doing my job, I was happy. I got into railroad engineering because my father was also a railroad engineer for the NN, and my grandfather was also an engineer for the NN. My family has known the NN for several generations. I just wish my children could've worked for the NN. Oh, well...so I was just reading the copyright page, and it mentioned that I was supposed to put a logo on my userpage. I didn't see anything else on the page about a logo, so how do I put a logo on my userpage? TheTrainEnthusiast (talk) 13:36, 1 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Heh, it does sound like a lot of fun. Nah don't bother, you've shown you know the basics, to add an image just add [[File:FILENAME.jpg|100px|Description|thumb|left]] for a template use the {{ }} curly brackets, but I'm sure you know that already. :) I'll write up a test and post it on your talk page within the week. Do keep up the good work! —James (TalkContribs)9:40am 23:40, 1 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hello, M.O.X. You have new messages at Geofferybard's talk page.

I see, the discussion looked like it was going to escalate to a full-scale dispute. The outcome was clear, no one supported the proposed move and disambiguation was unnecessary as it was the primary topic. —James (TalkContribs)9:40am 23:40, 1 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Talk:George Washington/GA4

Hello James, I just reviewed George Washington for GA. The article is not yet ready to be passed, mostly due to unsourced statements (but that should be easy given that much of it is common knowledge). I think 30 days is quite extreme, however, I wouldn't mind 1 week given that FSC is relatively small compared to FPC. In theory the 1 week grace-period is more than enough, but our contributors are busier than ever. —James (TalkContribs)12:18pm 02:18, 4 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

About the Palindrome article

Hi James,

Thank you for your comments on the Palindrome article I submitted. I revised it according to you suggestions by adding more details about what the organization does and more references. Could you have a look at it and tell me if it is good for submission now? Thanks! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Palindrome_Advisors Ddzz02468 (talk) 06:16, 5 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Ddzz, the submission has improved significantly, however, it's written from a slightly promotional manner, which at the moment is the only problem preventing it from being moved to the article namespace, if you could reword it from a neutral point of view that'd be most excellent. A reference for the first section of non-profit partners would be good also, don't bother putting them after each individual link, so long as the reference covers them it's unnecessary. I've removed the External links in that section too as External links belong in, well, the External links section. Cheers, —James (TalkContribs)6:37pm 08:37, 5 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

St Andrew's Cathedral

What on earth are you on about?

  • You can't add tags about "bias" without making a statement as to what you consider to be discriminating in the material presented. That is just plain insulting!
The Precentor of the cathedral has checked out this wikipage, and has linked it to the cathedral's own website, as the principal online source of information on the history and architecture of the building.
As the main writer of the article, I don't personally have any association with the cathedral. I didn't write it for them, and no-one there suggested its content. I can't imagine what bias you are implying in what has been written.
On one hand, it is acceptable to the cathedral staff, and on the other hand, they had no part in writing it, and it doesn't put forward any opinion, case or position, religious, political or other, that stems from the cathedral itself.
So where, do you mind telling me, is the bias?
  • As for the "too detailed" and the suggestion in that box that the info should be moved elsewhere, that is ridiculous! What sort of information do you expect to find on the page about a famous work of architecture? Have a look at some other cathedral websites. Anybody who doesn't understand the architectural description can simply inform themselves by following the links to English Gothic architecture, and Gothic Revival architecture.
  • As for your continual questioning of the sources, let me say this again:
  1. The late Dr Joan Kerr was one of the finest art historians that Australia has ever produced.
  2. Joe Kinsela is one of the two most perceptive and knowledgable architectural historians in the country, on the subject of medieval and revival architecture. Neither Joan nor Joseph had any affiliation with the cathedral. They were both completely independent.
  3. Johnstone's history of St Andrew's is the only one available. It was published by Angus and Robertson's the biggest publishing house in Australia at that time.

As for other information: if anyone wants details of a cathedral's choir, then virtually the only place to find it is their website. That is where one looks to find personnel, numbers, tours, lists of recordings and other such details. There simply isn't any relaible tertiary source for that type of information. That fact must be glaringly obvious. However, if one states that they are the finest choir in Sydney, then one requires a third-party opinion, say a newspaper review of a concert. Not the say-so of the choir's website. On the other hand, the choir's website might state "In 2007 the Choir won the choral section of the Sydney Eisteddford. That type of factual information can hardly be argued with and is an indication of quality, without being an opinion.

  • I have removed most of your tags, simply because you gave no reason on the discussion page for why you had applied them.
  • On the other hand,I expanded the intro, in line with the content of the article, as suggested, before removing the tag.
  • And yes, I agree that more refs are necessary. I only bothered to reference those which were direct quotes, not where all the information cam from. The sources are almost all the three sources I have referred to here, Kerr, Kinsela and johnstone. Please don't continue to question those sources as to do so is inappropriate.

If you slap those boxes back on the article, then you had better be able to explain, in detail, precisely what you are considering "biased", what part contains "too much detail" (in the light of your perusal of other (properly written) cathedral pages, and which of the sources you find unacceptable for the specific purpose for which it has been used.

Amandajm (talk) 18:22, 8 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

  • Some reliable source info about the history of the choir could be found in the old newspapers. Here's a link if you want to go trawling [2]. --99of9 (talk) 22:47, 8 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
The fact that in 1925 the Choir sang St Matthew's Passion in the Town Hall, and that at the prize giving in 1932 Billy Bloggs took the prize for Divinity is not the sort of "History" that is useful on Wikipedia.
When writing about the choir, what is needed is its date of foundation, its numbers and composition and whether they have substantially changed over the years, where the choristers are educated, whether the lay clerks are students or volunteers from the community, who the present choir master is, how many services do they sing per week and possibly the names of famous alumni.
Which newspaper is going to supply that?
A source that is close to the subject is generally reliable, if what is needed is simple facts, not qualitative opinion. The website of a choir is almost always the only reliable source of the precise details of the most basic facts. They know precisely (for example) that the boys are all aged between 8 and 14 years, (because that's the rules), they know exactly who the head chorister is, they now precisely what the choir 's current repertoire is, they know on which days the choir sings evensong and on which days there is choral communion. Nobody else publishes this stuff.
No, I am not going to sift through a hundred years of trivia.
What needs to happen here is that you need to develop a better comprehension of what constitutes a reliable source, when considered in the light of the type of information that is required. You are missing the point, and I keep on hoping that you are going to grasp it.
The Wikipedia MOS is a set of guidelines. They are not rules that are set in cement.
Different categories of information have different requirements.
In this article there is nothing that is contentious, shows political bias or is likely to cause offence. Therefore the requirements of an article like this are possibly different to those of an article like {{Black deaths in custody]].
That is about as clear as I can make it for you.

Yes, I have seen the talk page, and I have not seen any discussion about the status of the page. The mere presence of {{Policy-talk}} at the talk page is meaningless, Kelly added it simply as a matter of adding talk page headers and autoarchiving, not as the result of a discussion. Unilateral closing of audio duplicates of videos

There was no reason to close such files. The reason FP does not promote duplicates is because one or the other will appear in an article in general. If I take a picture of building x from vantage point y and someone else takes a picture of building x from vantage point y only one will generally be an FP. However, suppose I take one of the building under ordinary conditions and another photographer shows an added element of the same building or buildings under different conditions or showing a subset of the original (different zoom) (E.g., File:Chicago Grant Park night pano.jpg, File:Chicago Skyline Hi-Res.jpg & File:Chicago sunrise 1.jpg) both can be promoted. Basically, at FP, the requirement is that an image be in an article. If both are different enough that they can be in articles on WP, both are eligible to remain on FP. FS should use the same rule. If the files serve different enough and complementary enough purposes that both are used in articles, then both are eligible. Your unilateral removal of candidates for the mere reason that they are similar is not supported by WP:WIAFS. Candidates are judged by WP:WIAFS not your WP:POV on whether they are too similar. I am going to revert all files that you closed based on your WP:POV without a WP:WIAFS-relevant argument. I have presented in most nominees clear explanation that the given files serve different purposes on WP that most reviewers should understsnd that they are independent nominees.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 09:26, 11 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Yes but these are exact replicas we're talking about not variants and the issue has been raised on your nominations for some time now. Do as you will but they'll still have to be suspended, it's unnecessary to have duplicates, the only time they are acceptable is if audio quality can not be improved without interfering with visual content not when the audio is exactly the same. —James (TalkContribs)7:36pm 09:36, 11 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
They do not have to be suspended. If both the audio and video are perceived as useful and serving different purposes on WP, they are both eligible for consideration. There need be no difference in the audio content. Look at Wikipedia:Featured sound candidates/Boccherini's Sonata for Two Cellos in C Major (audio). You have a 1.95MB audio file and 89.18MB video file. Although the audio is the same, they serve different readers on WP. For many readers the much smaller file is greatly preferred. If the audio passes WP:WIAFS, it should be an WP:FS.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 10:07, 11 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Take the video to FP then, both processes share videos so if the quality is good all-round just send it to FP. —James (TalkContribs)8:49pm 10:49, 11 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Being a investagor and contactor from a requestor.

Hi, when a user reports a IP address, and the user is the requester, can he also be investigator and contactor? Just asking this. There's this report where a previous investigator has been retired. No that's fine, in most cases the ISP/organisation will not care regardless of how many emails you send. Badgering them will most likely yield a response :P jokes aside, a second email is fine. —James (TalkContribs)1:56pm 03:56, 16 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

FSC

What is going on with the following? All the closes are incomplete with {{FSC}} tags still remaining on the files. I don't know what other parts of the closing procedure may remain:

Wikipedia:Featured sound candidates/Othello (I. iii) audio only
Wikipedia:Featured sound candidates/Osama Bin Laden Death Statement audioonly
Wikipedia:Featured sound candidates/Bill Clinton audio files
Wikipedia:Featured sound candidates/Address Before a Joint Session of Congress (February 24, 2009, Barack Obama)

Also, Wikipedia:Featured sound candidates/Boccherini's Sonata for Two Cellos in C Major (audio) seems to have been yanked from FSC without commentary.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 17:58, 16 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

O.K. so I bounced around today and see you rved the last thing mentioned above. If I rm the FSC tags, would that complete the closing? New article

We're going to have to put the new article on hold because I had a minor heart attack and have been in the hospital for a while (I just got out, but I still have to stay in bed for a while). TheTrainEnthusiast (talk) 21:11, 17 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Oh my, I hope you get better. —James (TalkContribs)11:38am 01:38, 18 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. The doctor said that as long as I get a few weeks bed rest, I should be fine, but he also said my risk of getting another, more serious heart attack is higher now. Hopefully that doesn't happen...on the bright side, I've gotten plenty of goodies from my family. :) TheTrainEnthusiast (talk) 01:43, 18 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

GOCE elections

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors

Elections are currently underway for our Guild coordinators. The voting period will run for 14 days and ends on June 30, 23:59 UTC. All GOCE members in good standing, as well as past participants of any of the Guild's Backlog elimination drives, are eligible to vote. The candidate with the highest number of votes will become the Lead Coordinator, therefore, your vote really matters! There is also a referendum to appoint a Coordinator Emeritus. Cast your vote today.

And this user is being a coward

Hi James, please, try to keep a cool head, when commenting on La goutte de pluie's recall, because this, and this user is being a coward, is a personal attack. Since recall is a voluntary process, it might be better to use honey instead of vinegar.  . Salvio Let's talk about it! 10:04, 19 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, about that, but Lgdp seems to be avoiding the topic of recall and resignation of their admin tools, which is a rather cowardly move. If they can't even accept consensus they shouldn't even be an admin. Wikipedia is built upon consensus, which Lgdp seems to have forgotten. —James (TalkContribs)8:06pm 10:06, 19 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
I entirely agree with you; I'd support a recall petition, especially considering they declared to be open to recall, and it would be highly inappropriate of them to back out now that people are talking about how to go through with it; this, however, does not excuse personal attacks. You could say the very same thing commenting on La goutte de pluie's behaviour and not on them, which would be permitted, but I fear it might inflame things further all the same. Salvio Let's talk about it! 10:31, 19 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
I didn't mean for it to be an insult but I'm sure Lgdp understands what I'm trying to convey. The personal attack was unjustified though, as you say, it doesn't matter how bad things are it's never an excuse for personal attacks. I couldn't really help it on this occasion though, perhaps Arbitration will have to be sought, informal/voluntary processes are exhaustive and getting us nowhere. —James (TalkContribs)8:36pm 10:36, 19 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Well, before ArbCom, if voluntary recall doesn't work, an RFC will be necessary, or else ArbCom will not accept the case, because there haven't been previous attempts to solve the dispute. I still hope La goutte de pluie will make good on their committment to go through recall, however... Salvio Let's talk about it! 10:41, 19 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Bah, DR is too bureaucratic... whatever happened to the good old days? :P Though I wholeheartedly agree, it'll be better for Lgdp to accept recall than wind up at RfC/U or ArbCom. —James (TalkContribs)8:44pm 10:44, 19 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Francissca Peter

Hi James, has someone been hacking into your account? Your account nominated Francissca Peter for deletion, even though it claims 20 number one hits. Hopefully you know that a claim of importance is enough to avoid a speedy delete. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 11:21, 20 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

You'll be pleased to know that I'm not hacked and that the person who wrote the articles was paid to do so. I probably should have taken down the CSD template but I left it there when they told me there were hired to create the articles on both singers. A7 requires that there be no assertion of importance or notability so that was my problem I'll AfD both articles tomorrow though... they're badly written and lack a lot of citations —James (TalkContribs)9:31pm 11:31, 20 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
It is good to see you are the real person still! If you know the writer was paid to do this you can add the {{coi}} tag to the top. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 21:49, 20 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
I've initiated the AfD anyway. Thanks for keeping tabs on my contributions, I've been under a lot of stress, what with the half-yearly exams and assignments. —James (TalkContribs)9:01am 23:01, 20 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Nice work

Hi James, nice work reformatting DRN, it looks a lot more "professional" now. Just one thing, with Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard/Header, is there a way to center the new section button at the bottom, and make it larger, because at the moment while it's there, it's not entirely clear. I might try fiddling around with it and see what I can do, but thanks again. Steven Zhang The clock is ticking.... 12:51, 23 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

No worries, I'll mess around with the parameters and see what I can do :) —James (TalkContribs)9:58am 23:58, 23 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hey there, please see my edit, I removed the links to pages like Special:Block, ANI, as well as AE, because I'm not too sure if it belongs on this board. Shouldn't we be pointing people to this board, as opposed to back to ANI? The rest looks great though, but not too sure if that other bit fits in with the purpose of the page. Steven Zhang The clock is ticking.... 00:56, 24 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
I thought I'd make the DRN conform to most of the other dispute noticebaords in that it points to other noticeboards and given it's made clear DRN is to alleviate the AN workload it would be common sense to post new sections at DRN. —James (TalkContribs)12:52pm 02:52, 24 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough. I've reverted my undo. Steven Zhang The clock is ticking.... 03:00, 24 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Help!

I don't know why, but for some reason my .js and .css pages aren't working, would anyone with more clue than me be able to address this issue? Cheers, —James (TalkContribs) • 6:06pm 08:06, 29 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Did you change your skin? If so, then you have to move your JS and CSS pages. Alternatively, try the WP:Secure server, if it is there also not working. mabdul 09:26, 29 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Nope, this all started when I got renamed. —James (TalkContribs) • 9:40pm 11:40, 29 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
User:M.O.X/vector.js explicitly mentions your old username. Not sure how well it works with redirects. Favonian (talk) 12:04, 29 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
I changed it to use my current name... still nothing :S —James (TalkContribs) • 10:10pm 12:10, 29 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Purge your cache. Your browser might still be looking at your old username directory for the Javascript files and is not finding them there. Ctrl-F5 should do it.--v/r - TP 15:53, 29 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Tried that, even in Internet Options... still did nothing :S —James (TalkContribs) • 9:44am 23:44, 29 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Have you tried using a different browser? If that also fails, you might want to ask at WP:VPT where the clueful people hang out. {{helpme}} probably won't attract them. Regards SoWhy 10:52, 30 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
I used a different computer and browser... same problem :S I don't think this is able to be addressed. Cheers all. —James (TalkContribs) • 9:04pm 11:04, 30 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Ehm... I have another question: did you add them to the correct skin? (I had a similar problem). If you choose another skin you have to move the pages, otherwise the Mediawiki software won't recognize that you have any own CSS/JS installed. mabdul 11:29, 30 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
The problem doesn't lie there, I haven't changed anything prior to or post-rename. I'm still using Vector and refuse to use any other skin, because they're hideous. —James (TalkContribs) • 9:35pm 11:35, 30 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Maybe check by the developer tools every browser has included if the CSS/JS is loaded. maybe this is the problem. (also possible to do a transfer analysis by an external software). mabdul 11:41, 30 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
All enabled, cleared cookies and cache via the DevTools, didn't help either. Thanks for the suggestion though :) This rename is more trouble than it's worth. —James (TalkContribs) • 9:50pm 11:50, 30 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Maybe you can have a look at this

Hey James, I opened up this abuse response case, and finished analyzing it. I even mailed it to the school address (you might have got the cc on the mailing list), but it turns out that the school domain name doesn't exist, or some other problem exists. You might want to have a look at it, and probably try out any other mode of communication (since the IP locates to Australia). Lynch7 10:03, 30 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hello, M.O.X ! I heartily approve of your adding the Vatican website and retrieved date to the Catholic Church references. But, you appear to have undone the italics of the book titles. Is there a bot that can re-italicize them? (Neat userpages you've got here, very refreshing and imaginative.) Thanks, whether you fix it or not. --Kenatipo speak! 14:53, 30 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

WikiCup 2011 June newsletter

We are half way through 2011, and entering the penultimate round of this year's WikiCup; the semi-finals are upon us! Points scored in the interim (29/30 June) may be counted towards next round, but please do not update your submissions' pages until the next round has begun. 16 contestants remain, and all have shown dedication to the project to reach this far. Our round leader was   Casliber (submissions) who, among other things, successfully passed three articles through featured article candidates and claimed an impressive 29 articles at Did You Know, scoring 555 points. Casliber led pool D. Pool A was led by   Wizardman (submissions), claiming points for a featured article, a featured list and seven good article reviews, while pool C was led by   Eisfbnore (submissions), who claimed for two good articles, ten articles at Did You Know and four good article reviews. They scored 154 and 118 respectively. Pool B was by far our most competitive pool; six of the eight competitors made it through to round 4, with all of them scoring over 100 points. The pool was led by   Hurricanehink (submissions), who claimed for, among other things, three featured articles and five good articles. In addition to the four pool leaders, 12 others (the four second places, and the 8 next highest overall) make up our final 16. The lowest scorer who reached round 4 scored 76 points; a significant increase on the 41 needed to reach round 3. Eight of our semi-finalists scored at least twice as much as this.

No points were awarded this round for featured pictures, good topics or In the News, and no points have been awarded in the whole competition for featured topics, featured portals or featured sounds. Instead, the highest percentage of points has come from good articles. Featured articles, despite their high point cost, are low in number, and so, overall, share a comparable number of points with Did You Know, which are high in number but low in cost. A comparatively small but still considerable number of points come from featured lists and good article reviews, rounding out this round's overall scores.

We would again like to thank   Jarry1250 (submissions) and   Stone (submissions) for invaluable background work, as well as all of those helping to provide reviews for the articles listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Please do keep using it, and please do help by providing reviews for the articles listed there. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews generally at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup.

Two final notes: Firstly, please remember to state your participation in the WikiCup when nominating articles at FAC. Finally, some WikiCup-related statistics can be seen here and here, for those interested, though it appears that neither are completely accurate at this time. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. GOCE drive invitation

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors

The latest GOCE backlog elimination drive is under way! It began on 1 July and so far 18 people have signed up to help us reduce the number of articles in need of copyediting.

This drive will give a 50% bonus for articles edited from the GOCE requests page. Although we have cleared the backlog of 2009 articles there are still 3,935 articles needing copyediting and any help, no matter how small, would be appreciated.

We are appealing to all GOCE members, and any other editors who wish to participate, to come and help us reduce the number of articles needing copyediting, as well as the backlog of requests. If you have not signed up yet, why not take a look at the current signatories and help us by adding your name and copyediting a few articles. Barnstars will be given to anyone who edits more than 4,000 words, with special awards for the top 5 in the categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words".
