The February 2011 Wikification Backlog Elimination Drive has begun!

Get going!

The February 2011 Wikification Backlog Elimination Drive has begun. Please get started, as the drive aims to wikify over 2,000 articles this month. We're going to need all the firepower we can get, so please remind your friends to join up as well. In case you didn't know, wikification is fairly simple: just add wiki markup, links, and similar formatting. Thanks for joining; we're looking forward to an exciting time this month!

GOCE January Backlog elimination drive conclusion

Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive

Greetings from the January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! We have reached the end of the month and the end of another successful drive; thanks to all who participated.

Statistics
  • 54 people signed up for the year's first Backlog elimination drive. Of these, 40 participated.
  • One of our goals was to reduce the size of the backlog by at least 10%. We managed to reduce the backlog by 633 articles, or about 12%.
  • Another goal was to eliminate as many 2009 months as possible from the queue. We eliminated January, February, March, and April—4 out of 12 months is not bad! In addition, we eliminated 37% of all remaining 2009 articles from the queue.
  • Chaosdruid copy edited Kutch Gurjar Kashtriya for 32,711 words, which is the largest single article completed in one of our drives so far. This article counts as six 5000-K articles, and Chaosdruid wins the "most 5000-K articles" leaderboard category. Way to go! A complete list of individual results is here.
Barnstars

If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you participated in the November 2010 Backlog elimination drive, you may have earned roll-over words (more details can be found here). These roll-over words count as credit towards earning barnstars, except for leaderboard awards. We will be delivering the barnstars within the next couple of weeks.

Thank you for participating in this year's first Backlog elimination drive! We hope to see you in March.

Xiongnu

Hi, why did you reject the edits without explanation? Xiongnu was a people who established a nomadic empire that covers a lot of territories far beyond the modern region of Mongolia and Manchuria, and is likely to be connected with the Huns (if you see the latter article you will see them too). Thanks. --173.206.1.3 (talk) 23:25, 11 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

That was a see also link, you removed that without explaining yourself, I'm well aware of the territorial boundaries of the Xiongnu, however, removing that see also link under the header was not necessary. —Ancient ApparitionChampagne? • 10:29am • 23:29, 11 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Well, if you check it again, I actually added a "see also" section (not removing that section) with two links in my edit, how can you remove it without an explanation? Thanks. --173.206.1.3 (talk) 23:34, 11 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Sorry about that, slight misunderstanding in regards to your edit. I added the template again as it was relevant to the article as it's about Mongolia before present-day Mongol occupation. Regards, —Ancient ApparitionChampagne? • 10:59am • 23:59, 11 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
OK, no problem. Thanks. --173.206.1.3 (talk) 00:03, 12 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
By the way, you actually added two of the same template in different sections. Now I'm removing one of them. Cheers. --173.206.1.3 (talk) 00:21, 12 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Whoops, my bad. Sorry about that. —Ancient ApparitionChampagne? • 11:23am • 00:23, 12 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

On behalf of WP:CHICAGO, I would like to note my appreciation for being one of the people that helped to raise the quality of the Stephen Colbert article.

March 2011 GAN backlog elimination drive a week away

WikiProject Good Articles will be running a GAN backlog elimination drive for the entire month of March. The goal of this drive is to bring the number of outstanding Good Article nominations down to below 50. This will help editors in restoring confidence to the GAN process as well as actively improving, polishing, and rewarding good content. If you are interested in participating in the drive, please place your name here. Awards will be given out to those who review certain numbers of GANs as well as to those who review the most. On behalf of my co-coordinator Wizardman, we hope we can see you in March. MuZemike delivered by MuZebot 00:37, 22 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thank You!

The Featured Sound Main Page Proposal Voter Barnstar
I was truly humbled by the overwhelming community support for the recent proposal to place featured sounds on the main page. The proposal closed on Tuesday with 57 people in support and only 2 in opposition.

It should take a few weeks for everything to get coded and tested, and once that is done the community will be presented with a mock up to assess on aesthetic appeal.

Finally, I invite all of you to participate in the featured sounds process itself. Whether you're a performer, an uploader, or just come across a sound file you find top quality, and that meets the featured sound criteria, you can nominate it at Wikipedia:Featured sound candidates. Featured sounds is also looking for people to help assess candidates (also at Wikipedia:Featured sound candidates.)

Thanks again for such a strong showing of support, and I hope to see you at featured sounds in the future.

Speedy nomations

I've just had to decline four of your R3 speedy nominations. Please be more careful in the future. Ucucha 00:53, 26 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

The redirects were those contain improper capitalisation, I'm fairly certain that R3 covers that. —Ancient ApparitionChampagne? • 11:55am • 00:55, 26 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
No, it doesn't. In fact, redirects for improper capitalizations should be created in order to lead readers to the correct article. Ucucha 00:59, 26 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Drive-by tag much?  Frank  |  talk  00:57, 26 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Ah, my mistake I wasn't aware of WP:FNAME and having re-read CSD R3 I'll be more careful about future R3 tagging. —Ancient ApparitionChampagne? • 12:00pm • 01:00, 26 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

International polititical and religious rights union

Hi Ancient Apparition,

Apologies for overriding your speedy delete for International polititical and religious rights union. I thought the copy vio was a greater transgression. Cheers. Acabashi (talk) 02:05, 26 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

That's fine, though I think you were right in overriding my CSD tag, the article was just a copy-paste from the organisation's website, the author appears to have a COI as well. Regards, —Ancient ApparitionChampagne? • 1:09pm • 02:09, 26 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

WikiCup 2011 February newsletter

So begins round two of the WikiCup! We now have eight pools, each with eight random contestants. This round will continue until the end of April, when the top two of each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers of those remaining, will make it to round three. Congratulations to   The Bushranger (submissions) (first, with 487 points) and   Hurricanehink (submissions) (second, with 459), who stormed the first round.   Casliber (submissions) finished third with 223. Twelve others finished with over 100 points- well done to all of you! The final standings in round one can be seen here. A mere 8 points were required to reach round two; competition will no doubt be much more fierce this round, so be ready for a challenge! A special thanks goes, again, to   Jarry1250 (submissions) for dealing with all bot work. This year's bot, as well as running smoothly, is doing some very helpful things that last year's did not. Also, thanks to   Stone (submissions) for some helpful behind-the-scenes updating and number crunching.

Some news for those who are interested- March will see a GAN backlog elimination drive, which you are still free to join. Organised by WikiProject Good articles, the drive aims to minimise the GAN backlog and offers prizes to those who help out. Of course, you may well be able to claim WikiCup points for the articles you review as part of the drive. Also ongoing is the Great Backlog Drive, looking to work on clearing all of the backlogs on Wikipedia; again, incentives are offered, and the spirit of friendly competition is alive, while helping the encyclopedia is the ultimate aim. Though unrelated to the WikiCup, these may well be of interest to some of you.

Just a reminder of the rules; if you have done significant work on content this year and it is promoted in this round, you may claim for it. Also, anything that was promoted after the end of round one but before the beginning of round two may be claimed for in round two. Details of the rules can be found on this page. For those interested in statistics, a running total of claims can be seen here, and a very interesting table of that information (along with the highest scorers in each category) can be seen here. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
