Bits

Hi there AA,

You have been asking for some extra bits to be turned on to your user. It looks to me as if you want to try out every kind of tool on Wikipedia. I appreciate this, but there are guidelines to assigning these bits. Autopatrolled is designed to make it easier for the newpage patrollers. You have only made 1 page so far, so it has not been proven how good the articles are that you make. Please create those articles on government legislation and agencies that you suggest. But take your time and care to add references and enough to know that the topic is important.

For images if you can spend some time (perhaps 200 to 300 edits) improving other epoples uploads, and tagging things that need to be renamed, it will justify the filemover bit.

Please be persistent and stick at something you like or are good at for a while to build up the experience!

PS are you still on Wikibreak? I like your collection of userboxes, it took ages to load your usrpage! Graeme Bartlett (talk) 11:48, 17 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion declined - Sve Same Barabe

Hi. I declined this speedy deletion: WP:CSD#A9 does not apply, because the artist has an article. Album may well fail WP:NALBUMS, but you will have to consider PROD or AfD. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 14:47, 17 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Right then, thanks. —Ancient ApparitionChampagne? • 12:06pm • 01:06, 18 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Redirects and CSD templates

Just a friendly reminder that when templates are placed below a redirect, the redirect still functions. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but for some reason the software doesn't display a redirect when I'm clicking on the thumbnails from CAT:SD, which confused me for a while the first time I ran into one of these. Cheers. lifebaka++ 19:41, 17 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Oh I see, so when CSD tagging a redirect, should I place it above the redirect or delete the redirect altogether? —Ancient ApparitionChampagne? • 12:05pm • 01:05, 18 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

speedy declined - Tower of Paterna

Hi, Ancient Apparition. I declined the G12 speedy tag because the source page that you cited shows CC-BY-SA licensing. The CorenSearchBot is usually correct on text similarities but is susceptible to mistakes like this one, so it is a good idea to check any copyright markings before looking at the text. Cheers. CactusWriter (talk) 22:12, 17 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Ah, I took a brief look at the page. I didn't take note to the licensing. I'll be sure to do this next time. —Ancient ApparitionChampagne? • 11:30am • 00:30, 18 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion declined: Siapa Dia Sebelum Daku

Hello Ancient Apparition. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Siapa Dia Sebelum Daku, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: There is an existing article on the artist (Francissca Peter), therefore A9 does not apply. Please pursue deletion via PROD or AfD if concerns remain. Thank you. Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 19:18, 18 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Abuse

Hi Ancient apparition. I see that you announce you're a member of the Wikipedia Abuse Response Team. Is this the kind of thing you guys target?

Could you explain – I'm curious. Tony (talk) 01:25, 23 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

I don't have anything against your work. You're one of our best contributors, but arguments over meaningless subjects eg your assertion of the differentiation in use of hyphens and dashes should be beyond an editor of your tenure. I'm not going to involve myself in this dispute between you and Sven. Abuse Response is dealing with repeat IP vandals, trolls etc. See this general smartassery is exactly what I meant when I said up-yourself arrogant attitude. —Ancient ApparitionChampagne? • 1:31pm • 02:31, 23 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
No, I'm not referring to any dispute with particular parties; I'm referring to WP:CIVILITY, which makes it abundantly clear that you can't go around referring to some in these terms, including "smartarserry" and "up-yourself". Would you like to go to ANI to get this sorted out, or are you going to concede that you have breached the policy? Tony (talk) 03:04, 23 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
I don't claim to have not violated policy, but you aren't exactly a saint yourself, so how about we BOTH concede that we were in the wrong and let it lie? I'm not in the mood to go to ANI over this petty dispute. —Ancient ApparitionChampagne? • 2:09pm • 03:09, 23 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
No, the issue I am raising is your abusive language towards me, just repeated above. You are now trying to shift the matter. Would you like to go to ANI to receive an official warning? Tony (talk) 03:21, 23 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
It was matter-of-fact not abusive, also you aren't being civil about this yourself. Let sleeping dogs lie. I wasn't exactly happy at the comments you posted on Sven's talk page and the fact that you ignored his wishes in regards to posting on his talk page, I was speaking my mind. If you found it offensive, I apologise. Taking me to ANI over that 1 comment is stupid and pointless, it'd be a waste of both your and my time. —Ancient ApparitionChampagne? • 2:26pm • 03:26, 23 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • It really doesn't matter what your motives were: you were abusive to me. Then, here, 40 minutes ago, you repeated the abuse and added more to it. I am posting here because I find it offensive and unnecessary, and your repeat performance, yet more intense, demonstrates that you don't get it. It is with the greatest reluctance that I bother to respond to abuse, but this has been over the top. Saying that "smartarserry" and "up-yourself" are "matter-of-fact" actually makes it worse. I will take the matter to ANI unless there's some kind of apology and an undertaking not to repeat it. Tony (talk) 04:15, 23 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • (edit conflict)I find that incredibly ironic Tony that you march right on into my talk page and demand that I apologise, I would have overlooked it if you were being WP:CIVIL about it, considering that's the very policy you were referring to re my post on Sven's talk page. Considering you violated WP:NPA and WP:NLT, when contacting Sven that is, which is far MORE serious that anything that I said. Having already been to ANI I don't think you'd want another visit, especially one so soon. Now I'll let Gfoley give a WP:3O later tomorrow. —Ancient ApparitionChampagne? • 4:22pm • 05:22, 23 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
What is Ancapp? Where have I been uncivil on this page, please? GFoley? I don't need a third opinion to know that you have breached the civility code. NPA and NLT were not confirmed, actually—just Sven Manguard's opinion. You have attacked me with rude and insulting language; that is what I am complaining about. Where did I "mock" the purpose of the Abuse Response Team? I've never heard of it, but its name suggested that abuse by editors towards others—such as you have pursued here and elsewhere against me, is one of its functions. Why is that mocking? Tony (talk) 05:43, 23 March 2011 (UTC) PS, and TelCo, are you threatening me? Tony (talk) 05:44, 23 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
Right, something tells me that you haven't actually taken a look at the WP:ABUSE page. The "smartassery" mentioned above and subsequent response clearly indicates your distateful reference to the ART. Whatever happened to WP:AAGF? A caution and a warning could be construed as a threat, but it doesn't have to be. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 06:28, 23 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
So, I complain about this user's abusive language, and you think you're cautioning and warning ME? Is that it? Have I yet seen a word about the abusive language directed at me from this user? Tony (talk) 07:06, 23 March 2011 (UTC) And BTW, what is "distasteful" about my reference to the "ART"? If you really do think that you are issuing cautions and and a warning to me, I'm throwing them back in your face. What a nerve. Tony (talk) 07:08, 23 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

How are up-yourself and arrogant abusive? I'm sorry but I wasn't being UNcivil, it was a comment about your attitude NOT a direct insult. —Ancient ApparitionChampagne? • 6:15pm • 07:15, 23 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

  • Here's the policy: Wikipedia:Civility#Identifying_incivility. If you really think it's not uncivil, we need to do something about it to protect other users. It doesn't matter what you think about another editor; it's what you say that the policy concerns. Let me know if you don't understand, and we'll take it somewhere else. Tony (talk) 07:35, 23 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • "Abuse: Hi, you launched an attack against me. Is this in any way related to your little study group? Now please, admit that you're wrong and apologize or I will take this to ANI" is not exactly the best way to approach an editor on his/her talkpage. Is it too much to ask to just ignore and go work on something else? :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 08:07, 23 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Section break

I've read that, but my comment was an observation of your attitude from what I have seen. I wasn't in anyway attacking you directly, I had and still don't have any reason to do so. It doesn't matter though, that comment does fall under 1a and d (mostly the latter) and for that I apologise. However, I'd like to ask why you care about the differentiation in use of the dash and hyphen? —Ancient ApparitionChampagne? • 6:50pm • 07:50, 23 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the apology; that should end the matter, but please be more measured in future when you disagree with someone. It doesn't matter what you think: it's what you say that can hurt.
En dashes are a well-established part of English. WP came to a decision about them, in the MoS, years ago. In my view, they make a big difference, particularly on a screen, where hyphens are often visually unclear. The whole business is not helped by the fact that the Windows keyboard makes it hard to produce en and em dashes (while including programming symbols that hardly anyone else uses). It's easy enough to use GregU's dash script, which is excellent, but does only ranges (1921–23, rather than 1921-23). In "blood–brain barrier" (as opposed to "blood-brain barrier"), the dash carries the meaning of "against" or "boundary", whether the reader knows this explicitly or by inference (it will have a subliminal effect, I believe).
In sentences – especially where there are already lots of commas – a dash is really important. This, I believe, looks bad by comparison:
In sentences - especially where there are already lots of commas - a dash is really important.
What is your opinion? Tony (talk) 08:04, 23 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
I see what you mean, breaking sentences with an em-dash does indicate where there is a break in the sentence, the en-dash doesn't seem to do that to such an effect. It makes much more sense now that you've explained it, so the dash on the keyboard is in fact a hyphen and not a dash or am I missing something, since it appears that the hyphen is smaller than the en-dash and is roughly the same size as the dash or hyphen on the keyboard. The only way to use one or the other is by clicking on the provided symbols in the edit interface which is incredibly annoying. —Ancient ApparitionChampagne? • 7:19pm • 08:19, 23 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, I wasn't clear: en dashes (– ... halfway there) versus the little hyphens (-). The biggie is the em dash (—), but you don't need it. Art LaPella, by coincidence, has just written a how-to-do-it page. See what u think. Cheers. Tony (talk) 08:43, 23 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
I can see why you assert the need to differentiate each dash and its respective use. I will read that page and comment tomorrow? I have to go soon. —Ancient ApparitionChampagne? • 7:47pm • 08:47, 23 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

FFU

G'Day AA,

great to see you assisting at WP:FFU. Can I suggest that you sign your comment on the ifu/ffu template where you say accepted (or why declined) and then people will know who to talk to about the upload. 09:34, 23 March 2011 (UTC)

Perhaps you need a new computer. You could get the $599 machine from Aldi on sale today. Though the antivirus is just a trial run. Can you change your laptop setting to say that wikipedia domains can be trusted for scripts? Are you using firefox or IE9? something with good js support. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 05:46, 24 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
I can't control what is trusted or not, that's controlled by the BlueCoat Proxy Client, its a system-wide filter. I use IE8, I don't have IE9 yet, when the group policy is updated I'll be able to use FF again and thus FurMe and Twinkle. —Ancient ApparitionChampagne? • 6:33pm • 07:33, 24 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
You will be stuck pasting in {{nonfree logo}} and the like then. I know that you like the buttons though! I am surprised that the proxy blocks javascripts though. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 11:39, 24 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
PS what is your opinion on File:148502 501938464852 364409439852 7182833 6075758 n.jpg? Graeme Bartlett (talk) 11:40, 24 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
The proxy doesn't block js it's just IE8 has poor js compatability isn't compatible with most of the scripts on enwp, FF is but I'm not sure about IE9 (I imagine it's 10x better than IE8 given what I've seen), in regards to the image I think it should be deleted, there is no copyright and I don't think anyone will find any as it's been uploaded for a while, that or the uploader had a very cbf attitude toward attaching a license or template at the least (eg. a no license found template). I'm surprised it was only picked up now. —Ancient ApparitionChampagne? • 10:53pm • 11:53, 24 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free image File:Smw.gif

Thanks for uploading File:Smw.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. CSD process

I went ahead and restored the A7 CSD on the The Mafia Monroe Foundation article. Many times, an article may qualify for deletion under more than one criteria. When you encounter an article tagged for deletion, the process calls for adding an additional CSD tag rather than replacing the initial tag to reflect a preferred criteria. The CSD deletion process provides for articles that do not indicate importance or significance of the subject. Such is the case with MMF. You mentioned in your edit summary that the organization is notable. In reality, notability of organizations is established through significant coverage in reliable and independent sources. As such, lacking references, notability of the subject in this particular article is not established. Please feel free to contact me if you ever have any questions. Best regards, Cind.amuse 09:03, 25 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion declined: Marco Hidalgo

Hello Ancient Apparition. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Marco Hidalgo, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: pro footballer who's played in national top division game is easily enough for A7. Take to AfD if necessary. Thank you. GedUK  10:35, 27 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

There was no assertion of notability in the article as there were no sources provided. However, you make a fair point about playing in the top division. —Ancient ApparitionChampagne? • 9:42pm • 10:42, 27 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
