Category:Austin Peay Governors men's basketball coaches

Can you change the requested name at WP:CFR to remove the word "men's" from it as well, so the new name would read Category:Austin Peay State Governors basketball coaches? I renamed the main article since your nomination and didn't want to alter your request. Oh, thank you very much, I did plan on updating the templates where applicable. In addition to doing that I was also leaving out men's for colleges like Arkansas Razorbacks men's basketball and changing it to Arkansas Razorbacks basketball to reflect the women's team article would be located at Arkansas Lady Razorbacks basketball (should that article be created), not the Arkansas Razorbacks women's basketball. I went back and changed the Arkansas articles back so that we can discuss it if we need to, I'm still unsure of what the official name is given the Lady Razorbacks is on the NCAA website in the scoreline like it is. We can figure that out later I suppose. — Moe ε 08:41, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, you too. Yeah I have a lot going on right now and I put that attempted wikibreak up as a way to try to self-regulate my time spent on here. There are more important things that need focusing on instead of Wikilawyering and making sure every statistic is correct on articles. I both love and hate the fact that I joined the Wikipedia community - love because it provides a creative outlet with tangible results that I can't find elsewhere; hate because the addiction has put a serious strain on other parts of my life in the process. I'm also feeling a little disillusioned with Wikipedia right now and need to distance myself, at least temporarily, from the never-ending bullshit one encounters here. We'll see how that goes (I still plan to edit during this indefinite wikibreak, just hopefully not nearly as often). Jrcla2 (talk) 18:42, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

I'll assume you are Stephen Douglas in good faith, but (a) no sources you've provided link yourself directly as a W&M alum (the W&M class year link I mentioned in an edit summary does not constitute a connection since all it has is a name and a class year; the facebook link cannot be accepted [even if true] per WP:RS), (b) there's a conflict of interest since you're adding yourself, and (c) there are not enough reliable sources on you as an individual that go beyond routine coverage (therefore you do not qualify as notable per general notability guidelines). Suggested MVC Coach/Player of the Year merge

Jrcla2 - Any idea how to get this proposal finished and the merge tags removed? It's clearly a bad idea and there is precedent to keep it the way it is on everything from the Academy Awards to Nobel Prizes. Right now the discussion is just sitting there on the two talk pages. I don't know if it would be proper to remove the tags, but honestly, the fact that the merge nominator didn't bother responding or debating it with us once we raised about pointed objections would show he has no interest in actually making the merge happen. SIUE Cougars

Hello Jrcla2,

I see that you recently moved SIUE Cougars back to SIU Edwardsville Cougars citing naming convention. However, you didn't specify which naming convention you were referring to. Myself and a few other editors have been putting a lot of effort into the SIUE articles over the past few weeks and one thing we have been striving for is consistency. SIUE never refers to itself as "SIU Edwardsville" (at least not anymore) so we have been using the SIUE abbreviation everywhere. As you can see by looking at SIUE College of Arts and Sciences, SIUE School of Business, SIUE Graduate School, The Gardens at SIUE and many others, this format is standard. William and Mary Pep Band title

The William and Mary Pep Band is a student organization, and not technically a part of the Athletics Department. Therefore has an official name specified in its constitution, which is "The William and Mary Pep Band." It is weird that Beal has more weekly awards, but at the end of the season when all the cards are showing, Davis will be the conference FOY and consensus CPOY as well. He's the best player on the best team, who by all accounts are one jump shot away from being undefeated. The voters will recognize what he's done and he'll be rewarded accordingly. Thanks for your revert. The anonymous editor left a message on my talk page saying that he had personally spoken to Phil Roof, and that Phil had approved of his edits. There was a reason for the changes I made to Orsoni's edits to Phil Roof. For starters, some of what he wrote was inaccurate. Also, in the header, he removed the fact that he was the first man signed by the Toronto Blue Jays. It may be the single most distinguishable aspect of his career.   • If you look at what I removed, I removed a Baseball-reference link after the sentence, "Roof debuted with the Braves at just nineteen years of age as a September call-up in 1960, but did not appear in a game." The reason I removed it is that this fact is not shown on his Baseball-reference site, and the only reason I know it is because Roof told me. If anything, it would need a "Citation needed" tag. I also removed it after the sentence, "Roof was born in Paducah, Kentucky, and is the cousin of Eddie Haas." The paragraph is referenced at the end by a newspaper article that also states that fact. Finally, I added a link to a newspaper article on the Jim Rittwage and Don Mincher trades. I didn't remove any of your reference citations. That would be wrong. Your Jim Rittwage and Don Mincher trade citation was never removed from the article. The baseball-reference citation was used as a source in reference to the year his career began, and also as a citeable source in reference to his kinship with Eddie Haas. As per Wikipedia guidelines, your conversation with Phil Roof is considered original research and is not acceptable as a source.Orsoni (talk) 02:35, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

Please don't accuse me of doing something I haven't. I never "sourced" my conversations with Roof. I even went so far as to admit that at least one fact that I added to his article could probably use a "Citation needed" tag. I respect the fact that there also may be one or two other facts stated in the article that could also use this tag. He told me about getting arrested with Spahn, his first major league home run and that he was the first player signed by the Blue Jays. All of which is good information that belongs in a Wikipedia article. I then took what he told me, and found it on the net. Am I blue?

Jrcla, you recently changed the "official" color on the Kentucky men's basketball team navbox here. Unfortunately, the Wildcats men's basketball navbox is one of several UK sports navboxes, including football, women's basketball, etc., all of which retain the previous shade of blue. I'm no expert on UK's particular PMS shade of blue, but it stands to reason that all of the UK teams use the same blue, right? Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 21:55, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

I changed the ones that User:Trocksuk4415 had erroneously changed to regular blue. If you look at his editing history between 15:30 and 15:39 on March 19, those are the Kentucky navboxes/articles that I corrected. I meant to get all of the UK navboxes but totally forgot to get the rest. As shown by that edit summary, I have corrected some of them to the official shade per UK guidelines. I almost immediately realized that I had erred by including the word "State" in the category name and created a new one, rather than adding Coach Inman to the existing one. I then partly corrected that fault, but I neglected to tag the new one for speedy deletion, because I was a bit rushed for time. I also added to the prior category the names of the MTSU women's basketball coaches which were available to me--- there is a gap between Sue Gunter in '64 and Pat Jones in '75--- only to discover today that you have deleted them. To be honest, I wouldn't bother noting that on the conference navbox. It will be tough to denote without looking sloppy, and at the end of the day anyone who wants to read anything further about that specific head coach or that team can go to their respective articles. Those articles, especially the coaching navbox one for Tadlock (or his predecessor, whoever has the navbox) will show he's interim. It'd be too unwieldy to make the note of it in the Big 12 navbox. I saw your request to rename Category:Lists of men's college basketball players to Category:Lists of college men's basketball players. I'm fine if that's the convention for cats, but most articles list the gender first. Go figure. I was also looking further into other categories and wondered if it should be renamed to Category:Lists of college men's basketball players in the United States, similar to Category:College men's basketball players in the United States. Hi, I see you and another editor are disagreeing about the references in the infobox of the above page. I am not aware of the specifics of needing to cite within an infobox, so I won't address that. The other editor made a personal attack against you, but you should still keep cool when you revert his edits. The two of you seem to have a different understanding of the rules of citations. It's an IP from Australia who has a holier-than-thou attitude toward editing (see his talk page history for numerous other editors who feel this way, it's not just me). He's also adding superfluous references to articles for every single season record, which as was adequately explained on your talk page, is unnecessary to do because its verifiable and not verified information. By adding all of those references it adds thousands of kilobytes of text to articles for nothing more than page clutter. Most of those coaches need one (1, uno, un) reference to encompass the entirety of his season-by-season coaching records, which I would accept. But just because it's a policy to provide references to support information does not make it mandatory to do so for every single line of every single infobox. It's actually downright distracting, rather than helpful, when trying to read the season by season records to see all of those little blue numbers cluttering the page. Also, I have little to no respect for IPs who think they can spit policy when they're too cowardly to even create an account. I know for a fact that this IP in question uses multiple IP addresses to edit, making his edit history more difficult to trace and consequently making it more difficult to keep messages to him, good or bad, consistent and in one place. Since Day 1 I've believed that to edit on Wikipedia you need to register an account and this is one of the reasons why. I'm not going to edit war over this, if he wants to keep doing what he's doing, fine, I've got other things to concern myself on here, such as creating hundreds of quality of articles and being a much better editor than 99.999% of users on here. Jrcla, if I might make a suggestion . . . if an honor, award, championship or statistic is important enough to be included in a player or coach's infobox, then it should also be included in the main body text of the article. All facts in a well-written BLP should be supported by footnoted sources. If they are sourced in the main body text, then they do not need to be sourced/footnoted in the infobox or lead section. Personally, I try to avoid footnoting within infoboxes whenever possible for all of the reasons you ahve cited above . . . I am, however, strongly in favor of footnoting main body text, especially within BLPs, regardless of the application of the "verifiable" rule to the specific circumstances. Footnoted sources tend to end goofy content disputes. My suggestion: strike the compromise, and let the IP chase the footnotes for the main body text. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 16:11, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

DL, the original post was brought up regarding the season by season coaching records. As far as I was aware this IP was not adding references to infoboxes (if he was, and I removed them, I forgot I had done so). I am more concerned with the clutter on the yearly record charts a la Gregg Marshall. He added close to 5,000 kBs of text for nothing more than season by season record references. While this may not slow an article like Marshall's down, doing that on an article like James Naismith and it might. In either case it's unattractive, superfluous and wholly unnecessary. Searching through the Louisiana newspaper archives, I got 596 matches for State Fair Game and only 86 matches for State Fair Classic. That mention of "The Rag" in the NSU media guide was the first and only time I've every seen anything about a rag. There are a couple of 2-3 redlink CPOY templates out there that would be easy to finish. Metro Conference has 2 redlinks while the Mountain West has three (including last year's POY, who is returning and has a shot to repeat). Meanwhile, the CAA and Great West, which used to be complete, need articles for their 2012 winners. What do you think? Seven articles would knock out 4 templates. Yeah, I've got some of them. The issue with the SWC is that I'm not convinced the league gave out an official POY for much of its history. I think many schools claimed major newspaper POYs (Houston, Dallas) as official in their media guides. I have a dozen or so SWC media guides and while All-Conference teams are clear, it's hard to sort out the POYs. I'll take a look this week and see what I can do, though. Because none of the other pro basketball leagues are listed that way, so that if you add a category to any player that played in the league, someone else automatically removes that player. For example, if you add the player as having played in a Greek League team, he automatically gets removed from having played in the Greek League, with the reasoning being, "removed parent category". Yet, this does not happen for players of other pro basketball league categories. Honestly, this makes no sense at all. So that eventually, there would be zero players listed under the league players category. Because every time you add a player to a team's player category, he automatically gets removed from the league's player category, with the explanation being, "removed parent category". not that you asked me, but the top league in the world, the NBA, is done this way (take a look Category:National Basketball Association players) and the Israeli Super League and Chinese Basketball Association are both going that way as more club categories are created. In truth, very few broad league categories even exist. If someone played for a club in a given league, then they by definition played in that league, so two categories are unnecessary. You are right, at some point the Greek Basket League category would be totally diffused, with no individual players, only club categories. That isn't a bad thing. Yeah, you have the concept correct about parent categories, 173.216.233.111, but you have a completely backwards concept of how categories work. Category:Greek Basket League players is ideally only supposed to have team subcategories with no individuals listed. Like Rikster2 said, the NBA, the NBA Development League, Chinese Basketball Association, Euroleague, Australia's National Basketball League, all NCAA schools, etc. do this. Some are more completely diffused than others (please read WP:CATDIFFUSE, which will elucidate the matter for you). How come Chinese Basketball Association, Israeli Basketball Super League, and Liga ACB are not done this way? When you add a player to team's category from a team from one of those leagues, they do not automatically get deducted from the list of the league's players. It makes no sense. Eventually, there would be zero players listed under the list of league players, because whenever you add a player to a Greek team's player list, someone automatically removes that player from the list of the Greek league's players. Again, this is not done for the Spanish league, Israeli league, Adriatic league. So why is it being done for the Greek league? If this is true then it should be done for all of those other international leagues also. The reason those leagues appear to be done differently is because nobody has gotten around to diffusing them. Your reasoning for deleting all leagues' player parent categories is off base; those are supposed to be container categories whose sole purpose is to diffuse the specific teams' subcategories. Look at Category:National Basketball Association players by club. No individual players are found in it, but if Joe Q. Smith is found in Category:Philadelphia 76ers players, then he is transitively an NBA player. I fail to see what's so complicated about this. Jrcla2 (talk) 15:48, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

Then why is no one diffusing them? I notice that it was only my edits that were getting changed and it is only two editors changing them. Next thin, after this discussion, bunches of players are being removed from the Greek Basket League players list. There still isn't any explanation for this. But since there is not any actual discussion here, and just two editors saying how it will be, then I think that all of the others need to be edited the same way. Otherwise it looks like just the Greek League players category is being removed. I mean, why not actually fix this then if there is something wrong with it, instead of just "removing parent category" edits hundreds of times? It's odd that other editors are making similar edits, like adding a player to Liga ACB players category, and to Spanish team player categories, and the edit does not automatically get removed, with the the "removed parent category" edit. Besides this, why is the NBA category the way that every other league has to be done? Anyway, perhaps the two of you could help to fix this Greek League player category if it is so wrong, rather than just "removing parent category". I also don't see the edits being made to the other leagues in question. Serious question, do I have to start making edits to the other league categories, so that you will start to automatically "remove parent category" on them too? I edited some articles, and you guys "removed parent category" ONLY for the Greek Basket League players category, and you left other parent categories for Liga ACB, etc. I just wonder, why are all of my edits automatically scanned and changed? What site rule did I break that I got placed into an automatic bot edit? Category:Categories requiring diffusion Shouldn't all of the league player categories have been placed there into the categories needing diffusion, and not just the Greek one? Seems a bit odd. "Then why is no one diffusing them?" Because nobody has taken it as an initiative. So instead of crying about what other people haven't done, you can volunteer, like I have, to correct the problem. You're being too touchy about the Greek Basketball League as being singled out; relax, it's only because those were the edits noticed first. Do you guys not understand that foreign leagues, unlike the NBA use a promotion and relegation system? Maybe in the NBA, every player that played on an NBA team is also an "NBA player", but it does not work that way in foreign leagues. Many players played for a pro team, but played in lower divisions, like the second division. Yet, you would automatically list them as having played in the first division league, even if they did not. Because you place all the teams players under the league players list. I am sorry, but what you are doing is simply factually wrong and incorrect and it has no relation to how the NBA works. You guys are simply wrong and don't realize it. Final Four category renaming

I didn't think about how the category actually started with the word "Basketball" and all I saw was how the rest of the category's tournament title didn't match the article or category tree. It's still early and I wasn't thinking. Agree with you in that it's redundant, but I'm not entirely sure these categories should even exist. It seems like a tenuous connection for these players to have, unlike playing in the Olympics or another major international tournament in which they represent their countries. Obviously I don't agree. The FF is a big event and it's seen as an achievement to play in it. I think being able to see who has played in a FF is useful but having one category for all FF participants is too unwieldy. The Pan Ams are actually a pretty minor international event IMO. Maybe it's because I'm a bit pessimistic when it comes to SPI accounts on Wikipedia, but the reason I think it's DragoLink08 is because (a) the new username is almost taunting in that it's like he figured out how to avoid the block and decided to let it be known, and (b) after being blocked many times – both as Drago and as IPs – this person is picking up how to avoid being instantly detected again. Considering this new editor has been concentrating on color schemes to college sports' articles and navboxes, as well as the occasional dabble in wrestling, I think it's the same person. I don't disagree with any of that. (I'd overlooked the wrestling angle.) Your template may cause him to abandon this one and move on, and solve the (immediate) problem; but what I've done in the past in other cases is that when I detect some new obvious puppet, if they don't seem to be doing much harm, I follow their edits and just let them run until they begin to disrupt things (which they invariably do). Then I get them blocked. At least then you know where they are! (If and when you do file an SSI report here, I'll see it and will weigh in with my concurrence.) Category:American college football navigational boxes by team

Jrcla2, FYI, I've recreated Category:American college football navigational boxes by team to organize the categories of navboxes by team. Category:NCAA Division I FBS team navigational boxes and the like are intended to organize the team (i.e. program overview) navboxes themselves. Category:American college football navigational boxes by team was recently emptied by an editor who missed this distinction, and then it was deleted. I'm fine with the changes you're mentioning, but I think it'd be prudent if you wrote clear descriptions in each of those categories so future editors don't get confused as to their purposes. Hi, I'm working on the Tara VanDerveer article, one you've contributed to. According to the info box, Ohio State had a Big Ten championship in 1982. However, according to page 174 of the OSU Media Guide the Ohio State women's team wasn't part of Big Ten competition until the 1982-83 season.

I'm tempted to remove it, and you may be wondering why I am contacting you.

According to Wikiblame, the material was first added by this edit [2], but that's a bot edit, and is clearly changing the case of words, not adding new material. College Baseball All-America Teams

Hey, Jrcla. I just saw your addition of the new 1958 navbox to the Bernie Parrish article. In checking the 1959 navabox, I found Perry McGriff, and moved his misnamed article ("Perry C. McGriff") to match the navbox link. Can't say we Gators aren't doing our part to light up the blue links . . . .

If you search the obvious name variants, I would be willing to bet that there are other similarly misnamed baseball player articles (or misnamed navbox links, depending on your perspective). Usually, it's a matter of birth name vs. nickname or the inclusion of unnecessary middle initials included in the article title. Cheers, and thanks for your usual good work. I found Andy Phillips (baseball) as the listed entry on 1947 College Baseball All-America Team, but because I recognized his name from his basketball career, I was able to correct both the article and the navbox to show it as Andy Phillip. That one happened to be dumb luck; if there are any other mistakes on the baseball AA pages, I'm likely not going to know (nor do I feel like taking the time to test out name variants, a more inclined WP:CBASEBALL editor may want to spot check these articles). To get a better handle on the overall quality of comments now that the tool has become a more established part of the reader experience, we're undertaking a round of hand coding - basically, taking a sample of feedback and marking each piece as inappropriate, helpful, so on - and would like anyone interested in improving the tool to participate :).

Bob Harris

Hey - I see where you'd added the Junior College player category to Bob Harris (basketball) a few months back and I was wondering if you remember where you came across that? I am trying to track this down and can't find any old newspaper articles. I do see in the Murray State Racers media guide that a "Bob Harris" played there in the 1945-46 season (which would fit perfectly), but since the category says Murray College the JC - and there is one - and the name is so common I hesitate to put that in as fact. Hmmm ... I was afraid of that. Usually JCs have decent info or I can find an old article. Seems weird that Murray State in KY would have a guy by the same name at the right time. Wondering if databasebasketball may not be correct. Murray State was an NAIA school and with many of the transfer restrictions lifted during WWII it's plausible he could have moved schools without sitting a year.
