Nick Kellogg help?

I saw you created the DJ Cooper page. I've never created an article before and started with Nick Kellogg. I've only done edits here and there for the past few months, trying to clean up things involving the Ohio University Bobcats. Kind of a learn as I go thing. Didnt know if you could take a look at it and possibly improve it. I do see you do a great job updating everywhere. Any help or tips would be appreciated. Thanks a bunch! The article is currently under review for submission. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Nick_Kellogg — Preceding unsigned comment added by Littlekelv (talkcontribs) 18:08, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

Down to two CPOYs for 2011

You up for a run at the last two CPOYs for 2011 (all 2012 and 2013 are complete)? Ken Horton of Central Connecticut State and Mike Smith of East Tennessee are the last two and both are still active in Europe so they should be pretty easy. I'll take one if you do. Rikster2 (talk) 21:08, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

Also, I think that guy creating all the NBA stubs will keep everyone in infoboxes for awhile. Glad to have the articles but yowza! Rikster2 (talk) 21:09, 3 January 2014 (UTC)
I will take Ken Horton. Yeah I'm glad someone is deciding to do a halfway decent attempt at NBA stubs, but good god that is going to require a ton of backlog cleanup. Jrcla2 (talk) 21:58, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

Re: Williams Ephs men's basketball players

Hey, thanks for dropping me a line. Unfortunately, I'm back into academic work at the moment and don't have any time for serious editing. If they're still in the unfinished queue by the time summer rolls around, I'd be happy to take a look at them and get a change of pace from baseball work. Thanks very much for thinking of me. Wisconsin Badgers men's basketball

Hello, I moved the templetes for the Western Conference to the Big Nine on accident. I am unable to switch it back so now on 1911–12 and 1913–14 there is no longer the conference standings. Can you help? Again, I am sorry about this. Redmen44 (talk) 09:01, 20 January 2014 (UTC)

NCAA basketball team navboxes

I'll leave them all as redlinks then. The reason I was linking them was the red link suggested there was no collective info on a particular teams coaching tree, when in fact the template starts the process. There's nothing to suggest an editor can begin a more extensive article (like North Carolina, Kentucky, or UCLA, but I'm guessing it's going to be a long time before that occurs for many of the lesser known teams. Plus I thought it confusing to have the team navbox be redlinked, yet have another navbox with the coaching information below it......Or show no information on a particular college coaching history on the team or year page, but find the coaching template on a coaches page....Pvmoutside (talk) 23:31, 23 January 2014 (UTC)

Brad Robinson (basketball)

Hi Jrcla2, and thanks for reverting my bad edit to Brad Robinson (basketball). I had been attempting to apply WP:DATERANGE (between <date1> and <date2>) but didn't read the article carefully enough. I'm grateful to you for correcting this for me.

With regard to the other changes you reverted, I presume you have no objection to the application of WP:NBSP to "215 pounds". I concede that my change of "sophomore" to "second" is more debatable, but I did this on the MOS principle: "Avoid words and phrases that give the impression of straining for formality, that are unnecessarily regional, or that are not widely accepted." The word "sophomore" is undoubtedly a regional term, not widely understood outside North America, and "second year" is universally understood. I cannot understand why we should deliberately make the article more difficult for a worldwide readership to understand. Does "sophomore" carry extra connotations which are not conveyed by "second"? I've never come across the word "sophomore" before, so am unsure as to such nuances. On the other hand, one could argue that the Brad Robinson (basketball) article is so unlikely to be of interest to anyone outside North America that the use of local dialect such as this may be excusable. What do you think? Sincerely — Hebrides (talk) 12:01, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

I have no objection to adding WP:NBSP to 215 pounds (I didn't see that edit or else I'd have left it in...I'll go in and re-insert it myself). The thing about "sophomore" versus "second year" is that since the article's subject is an American basketball player who is notable for his American collegiate career, the context of sophomore is appropriately used. It doesn't exactly fall under WP:ENGVAR, which is more about "color" versus "colour," but the umbrella concept is the same. If Brad Robinson ended up playing professionally in another country outside of the United States, I'd have less of an objection because he would then be more of a universal person of interest. Like you mentioned, he will only really be of interest/known to people in North America, but probably more specifically the United States, so I think sophomore should be left in. 2000/1000 update

Looking like Augustine Rubit won't hit 2000 points. He'd have to average 25 ppg the rest of the way and the team is so bad they'll have no postseason after their conference tourney. However, Alex Francis of Bryant will probably hit 2000 points this weekend, and he has 922 rebounds as well. He has a very good shot at it. Rikster2 (talk) 14:19, 15 February 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up. Jrcla2 (talk) 16:18, 15 February 2014 (UTC)
Francis has 984 rebounds going into the NEC tourney. Two games should do it, if they can get them. Also, the CPOYs are starting to roll in. I'm trying to anticipate a few to knock the queue down. Rikster2 (talk) 21:58, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

Why is it only in a handful of player's infoboxes? How come there's no NCAA Division I assists laders? (T23tran (talk) 13:32, 25 February 2014 (UTC))
....Because only a handful of players did that, why else? And if your rationale for completely inappropriate mass removal of information is if every single statistical leader isn't in every player's infobox, then nobody can have it! you have a lot to learn about this website. Also you're incorrectly formatting honors such as consensus All-Americans, years of NBA All-Star Games, etc. Leave basketball players' infoboxes alone, you clearly do not know the consensus on what is to be included and how it is to be formatted. You're undoing literally hundreds of hours (or more) of man hours' worth of editing by myself and other college basketball/NBA editors who have (a) already gained consensus on what is to be included, and (b) been around the proverbial block on the basketball-related realms of Wikipedia and have much more familiarity with standards than you. Jrcla2 (talk) 13:38, 25 February 2014 (UTC)
Oh and not to belabor the point, but Avery Johnson has his NCAA season assists as an infobox highlight, and he's literally the first player I checked. Jrcla2 (talk) 13:39, 25 February 2014 (UTC)
It all looks pretty sloppy if you ask me but you're right. Who came up with these standards and where do I go to learn them? Also, how do I voice my opinion on what these standards should be?(T23tran (talk) 13:43, 25 February 2014 (UTC))

Saint vs. St.

I was looking at the division 1 basketball templates, and some of them have the full spelling saint...., others have st......I'm guessing we should be consistent. Should we use Saint or St. and change those already created accordingly????....Pvmoutside (talk) 02:39, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

UVA's "Tennessee Turnaround"

Hey, man; saw you kicked that off, and, uhh, I think that's definitely part of their lore now. I see a handful of articles, not just one, that refer to it as the "Tennessee Turnaround", and literally hundreds that mention it in some fashion; their SG Joe Harris going over to Coach Tony Bennett's house, and how they went from the gutter to ACC Regular Season and Tournament champs for the first time since 1976. I'd say that is now as much a part of their lore as the Chaminade Upset. Just because only a handful of news articles actually refer to it by that term doesn't mean it's not notable, and yeah, I'd say it'll mean more to the Cavaliers than putting Valpraiso one more game into the NCAA tournament. Can we slap it back up?

It's really just recentism; no way is it "as much a part of their lore as their Chaminade upset" – not even close. That Chaminade upset is considered one of the greatest upsets in college basketball history, has had thousands of articles written about it, a documentary made about it, and is the entire reason the Maui Invitational Tournament exists. If you want to write something up on the "Tennessee Turnaround" as a few sources have called it, that would be appropriate as a standalone section in 2013–14 Virginia Cavaliers men's basketball team, not as a separate article. Jrcla2 (talk) 12:49, 20 March 2014 (UTC)
I dunno, man- yeah, I understand that about Maui and such, and while you might have a thing with recentism, I think if you polled Wahoos, they might disagree about where it stands in THEIR lore now; which is the operative thing, IMHO. 'specially if they make a deep run in the tourney, but, then, we'll see. If you argument is recentism, then I can buy it for now. If it's the spot in UVA lore, I'd hafta respectfully disagree. Boise State Broncos men's basketball navbox

The Boise State men's basketball media guide doesn't have any seasons listed in it prior to 1968-69. It seems odd that they sponsored football and not men's basketball prior to that, but I can't find any indication that they did. --SportsMaster (talk) 16:18, 21 March 2014 (UTC)

Question about division ii templates

Hello, Jrcla2 I have noticed that you have helped identify some of my division ii standings templates in the past. I have ran into an editor who is claiming that the standings don't have notability, even though I place the templates into the season article. An example is Template:1986 Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association football standings and I have linked it to the page for the 1986 NCAA Division II football season. I have noticed on this editors talk page that (him or herself) has had several articles nominated for deletion and is on a vendetta. I would like to avoid an edit war if at all possible. I was wondering if you would have any advice on the proper course of action. ThanksUCO2009bluejay (talk) 01:33, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

This nomination was made in error because the rationale deletion is bonkers. Mr. Guye has no clue what qualifies as valid nomination rationale, plus he seems incompetent as en editor in general. Do not sweat this. Jrcla2 (talk) 03:52, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

Temple Owls men's basketball navbox

Why did you undo my edit to the Template:Temple Owls men's basketball navbox? You didn't give a reason why. Hi - I was redlinking Lamar Patterson on some articles and came across a formatting issue I couldn't resolve on three Pitt season articles - 2008–09 Pittsburgh Panthers men's basketball team thru 2010–11 Pittsburgh Panthers men's basketball team. Was wondering if you could help. All of the players in these articles were linked - obviously not all the players are even close to notable. Do you know how to delink names when name sort formatting is used? Thanks for any help you can give. Rikster2 (talk) 15:01, 12 April 2014 (UTC)

His Eurobasket profile. Also, when creating players' articles whose primary professional notability is overseas, I find it's very useful to check to see if an interwiki version of the article exists. The Italian, Spanish, and French Wikipedias are by far the best at basketball players' articles. False Accusations

Excuse me sir, I would like to inform you that that is NOT my IP Address. Whenever I edit a page, I make sure I am logged in because I do not and will not ever hide behind an IP.

I also do not appreciate that you were so positive that it was me, as I have no idea who that address is. I would strongly appreciate it if you would respond as soon as possible so I know that you are aware of your false accusation.

If you still do not believe me (although I do not feel comfortable with giving out my IP Address), I would gladly prove to you that that IP address is certainly not mine. Mugurple (talk) 00:33 , 27 April 2014 (UTC)

It's easy to use multiple IP addresses, that proves nothing. I can open up an SPI case and have you, that IP, and User:Chrishill8414 checked by a clerk. If it turns out you're all the same person, you'll all be blocked for disruptive editing. Jrcla2 (talk) 13:39, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

minor edits

Jrcla2,

Thank you for reviewing my edits and seeing what I do; it is much appreciated. I almost literally mark all my edits as "minor edits" because they are usually small things that don't change the content or information of the article and they don't need to be examined by a reviewer. The vast majority of my edits have been edits that don't need to be reviewed. They include:

  • Spelling and grammatical corrections
  • Simple formatting
  • Formatting that does not change the meaning of the page
  • Obvious factual errors
  • Fixing layout errors

UT Arlington

I don't understand the warning. You mentioned the consensus is that UT Arlington is Texas Arlington. How so? One guy changed it because that's what ESPN had, I reverted back to the original (many of them I created myself) and then he says to start a talk page after he moved it.

The University wishes for its athletic teams to be known as such (see page three of the basketball media guide, grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/txar/sports/m-baskbl/auto_pdf/2013-14/prospectus/prospectus.pdf) and the main page is branded as such (www.utamavs.com). The Conference it belongs to refers to it as UT Arlington (http://www.sunbeltsports.org/index.aspx?path=uta). Even media outlets like Fox Sports refer to UTA as UT Arlington (http://msn.foxsports.com/collegebasketball/story/UT-Arlington-defeats-ULM-8574-53032160). The major daily newspaper refers to them as UT Arlington (http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/college-sports/other-colleges/20140306-ut-arlington-sneaks-past-troy-in-double-overtime.ece). In fact, the only ones who consistently don't are ESPN and TreyDavis3.

I don't get why him moving it first without discussion, then me reverting back to the original gives me a warning and not the guy who vandalized it to begin with.FoUTASportscaster (talk) 21:42, 19 April 2014 (UTC)

NJCAA

I've been working some on the Chris Jans article. Bowling Green is his first NCAA D1 head coaching job, his previous HC jobs were in the NJCAA which i can find nothing on. Didn't know if you had any idea where to find info on that. I can find current info but teams could've switched conferences since he was there in the 90's. Also, should this even be in his head coaching career chart?Littlekelv (talk) 21:30, 24 April 2014 (UTC)

Junior college information is next to impossible to find. The exception to that statement is if that junior college eventually becomes Division I (like Boise State or Cal State Fullerton), because then the team media guide normally lists yearly results. For Chris Jans, I'd leave it the way you have it if you can't find anything more about his JuCo days. Jrcla2 (talk) 00:48, 25 April 2014 (UTC)

Articles I've created

Hi Jrcla2,

I notice that you are making "cleanup" changes to the Ivy league basketball articles. The changes remove a small amount of characters, and I am thinking that you were removing the extra bytes from the article that I must have caused by pressing the spacebar after a sentence before pressing enter. In this the case? Robert4565 (talk) 17:36, 1 May 2014 (UTC)

Kind of. It's aesthetically unappealing to have a navbox be bunched together between references and categories, not to mention it makes locating the navbox more difficult when editing the page, so all I've really been doing is tidying up the white space above and below the Ivy League basketball navbox. Hey, thanks for cleaning up some of the stuff that I hadn't done yet. Definitely appreciate it. I'm about to add his year by year coaching results for football, baseball, and tennis. And do a little write up on his history as a coach. Just in case you were doing the same so we don't waste each other's time. 'Edit' He died in 1985, not 1984, despite what HSCathletics.com says... Rhode Island Rams

Hi, you seem to have removed this Template:University_of_Rhode_Island_Rams from nearly every page I added it to. Is there something about the navbox that needs to be fixed to make it a useful addition to those pages? I tried to make it conform to other navboxes on similar pages, and I think it's a useful and logical collection of pages. I undid one edit where you removed it, but then saw that you also pulled it from many other pages, so I came here to ask for some guidance/clarification. Hebbled (talk) 21:16, 10 June 2014 (UTC)

That template is made obsolete for the basketball and football articles by the more specifically-focused {{Rhode Island Rams men's basketball navbox}} and {{Rhode Island Rams football navbox}}. Jrcla2 (talk) 12:14, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
Templates like this are indeed appropriate for the main athletics page and the main page for each sport. I've restored this template to those pages. Now may be a good timec to standardize these school-wide athletic navboxes. Jweiss11 (talk) 13:23, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
I don't see the need for sports-specific navboxes at all and had previously considered TfD-ing the entirety of them. All school-related articles should be contained on the school navbox itself. Picking apart sports as a separate commodity is navbox overkill. Jrcla2 (talk) 13:40, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
Jrcla2, that may the best move, to TfD all the existing ones as a class. If the university navbox links to main the athletics articles and each of the team articles, that's probably enough to obviate the need for these navboxes. Jweiss11 (talk) 13:55, 11 June 2014 (UTC)

Redirects for college basketball seasons

I am reposting this from my user talk page in the hope you can answer my question down below. Thanks.

I appreciate your efforts in improving List of College Championship Game Outcomes, but please stop creating redirects for season articles in {{NCAA Division I men's basketball season navbox}}. The season article redirects are misleading because there is more content to those seasons than just who the national champions are. There are conference standings, rule changes, All-American selections, and other miscellany that should be included in their own stand-alone season articles. WikiProject College Basketball will eventually get around to creating those articles; just because they're red-linked now doesn't mean they will be forever. It's better to have a red-link than a redirect blue link to an article not even exclusively about college basketball. Thanks. Jrcla2 (talk) 19:08, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
I apologize profusely. I had no idea that inserting a redirect there (I think it was for 1908 and 1922 only) affected navboxes to which they were linked. How would I determine that in advance of making such a mistake? I don't want to make it again. Jeff in CA 22:40, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

Anderson Packers and Baltimore Bullets coach navboxes

I don't understand why you reverted my edits. It didn't have anything to do with interim status. In the Packers navbox, you have Duffey and Schultz listed as co-coaches, when in fact Schultz served, then Duffy (see here). Same with Scolari and Reiser (see here here). pbp 04:35, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

My mistake. I thought you had changed something else. Last night when I saw the edits it was late and I was tired so my eyes must have deceived me. Jrcla2 (talk) 12:41, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

Texas Southern

Sorry, but you need to learn not to revert corrections. There is no Texas Southern Tigers women's basketball team. The Texas Southern women's basketball team is the Texas Southern Lady Tigers basketball team. As a result, you do not have a Texas Southern Tigers men's basketball team. You have the Texas Southern Tigers basketball team and the Texas Southern Lady Tigers basketball team. If you do any type of research on Wikipedia, you would know that you do NOT attach men's to the team name when the women's team name is seperate. Examples of this can be found with the Texas Tech Red Raiders/ Texas Tech Lady Raiders, the TCU Horned Frogs/ TCU Lady Frogs, Louisiana Tech Bulldogs/Louisiana Tech Lady Tecchsters, the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors/ Hawaii Rainbow Wahine, and even the Southern Utah Thunderbirds/ Southern Utah T-Birds. If you did a little bit of research, you would find out that every SWAC women's team has the word Lady attached to it, except for Mississippi Valley State. For Mississippi Valley State it is the Delta Devils and the Devilettes. As a result, you need to change it back to how I had made it. It is the Texas Southern Tigers basketball team, no men's attached!Bigddan11 (talk) 21:17, 3 July 2014 (UTC)

2014 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship Game, etc.

Hey. I've been 0ut of the loop for a while. Are we creating separate articles for NCAA championship finals now? It appears that a relatively new editor (Michiganwolverines2014) has been busy beavering away creating a half dozen of these, as well as a navbox template that suggests he intends to create separate articles for all of the NCAA finals. As a matter of policy, has WP:CBB considered this? I always thought the summary of the final was intended to be incorporated into the tournament article for each year. Please advise. I have just found a nest of individual CFB and high school game articles that this editor and several others have been working on, and it may be time for several AfDs and some policy discussions on the WP:CBB and WP:CFB talk pages. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 19:55, 6 July 2014 (UTC)

Yeah they went through an AfD and passed (well, one or two of them did). Nothing formal was issued at CBB but we've all sort of taken the stance that national championship games are notable unto themselves and the AfD proved that. None of us care enough to fight it because they're decent articles and there's a lot more to tackle. I'm starting to care less about what a lot of these new-ish editors are doing. I'm not anywhere near retiring from Wikipedia yet, but I'm also starting to see how this website will slowly unravel itself down the road and it's becoming more of a burden to give a shit (see above thread, where a novice editor is going around making every female SWAC basketball team "Lady (name)". Could I fight that? Yeah. Do I want to? Kind of. Will it change anything in the future when some other asshole comes along and starts spewing off on how those articles should be named? No. Consensus gets buried in archived threads and then it basically becomes obsolete if it's older than a year. Part of the reason why I'm just going to start going off and do my own thing (meaning, still abide by consensus, but not care as much about helping others). Jrcla2 (talk) 20:19, 6 July 2014 (UTC)
Yeah, I saw the newbie lecturing you above about the CBB coach navboxes, remembered how you had been instrumental in their creation and naming, shook my head and laughed. Don't let the weasels hold you down and nibble you to death! As for the stand-alone NCAA final articles, there's more than one way to skin that polecat: (1) AfD merge nominations (as distinct from AfD deletion nominations), (2) a CBB policy decision to merge, or (3) separate article talk page merge discussions. The third option is the least desirable because it involves separate discussions that rarely attract enough attention. Personally, I would favor a combination of CBB policy consensus followed by AfD merge nominations . . . . You tell me: what were the opinions of a majority of CBB regulars? If it's split, I have no desire to push anything controversial, but if most CBB editors favor a merge, I'm happy to organize the AfD merge discussions -- the principal argument being the separate NCAA finals articles duplicate most the material from the tournament articles. What's your reaction? Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 20:52, 6 July 2014 (UTC)
The AfD for the 2015 game is here. I forgot that this is the only national championship game AfD that was nominated and that it got deleted because it's too soon for that article. What I was thinking of was 2014 Final Four AfD which resulted in a merge. Either way, my personal opinion is that I'm ok with the championship game articles existing (if they were all deleted I wouldn't care either). Merging would probably be better than deleting to be honest, but I feel so weakly about any of it that whatever happens happens. Jrcla2 (talk) 13:03, 7 July 2014 (UTC)

Missouri Tigers Head Coaches

You undid my revision and the reason was the red link promotes someone to make the separate page or something like that. I made the separate page last night and it was deleted because the information is already presented on the page I linked in the head coaches Mizzou panel. So what should be done here? Bwwolz86 (talk) 18:10, 21 July 2014 (UTC)

It was deleted because it had duplicate info from the main article. I substituted {{main}} and removed that section from Missouri Tigers men's basketball. Nothing needs to be done. Jrcla2 (talk) 18:12, 21 July 2014 (UTC)
The only reason I created the page was because nothing was linked on the list of mizzou coaches in the box on the bottom of the page. Now there is information there that looks pretty identical to what I did. But in your own way.. what is the difference? Bwwolz86 (talk) 21:57, 22 July 2014 (UTC)
It was deleted because you pasted the exact same content found at Missouri Tigers men's basketball#Coaching history without removing the content from the main Missouri Tigers men's basketball article. Since there was duplicate information on two different articles, it was redundant. Jrcla2 (talk) 13:26, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
So instead of DELETING the page I created you couldn't have just done what was done now and link the page I took time creating on the main basketball article? That is what confuses me.. Bwwolz86 (talk) 23:10, 24 July 2014 (UTC)

Hey - not sure how motivated you are around these, but there are only 2 left for the 2009–10 season (Reggie Holmes and Tyren Johnson) and only 3 for the 2008–09 season (Alex Barnett, Jeremy Chappell and Matt Kingsley). Any interested in going after these? I've created a couple of CPOYs in the last week and might be inclined to knock these out. Rikster2 (talk) 01:57, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

I'll take Tyren Johnson first, then see who I'm feeling after that. Jrcla2 (talk) 11:47, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
Reggie Holmes is done. Rikster2 (talk) 01:45, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
Word. I'll try to get Johnson done this work week (work's been slow, can you tell by my editing patterns?). As you've also noticed I've been enjoying knocking out former NBL/NBA players. WP:NBA is surprisingly close to finishing off all red links (I'd guesstimate there are 75-100 remaining). Jrcla2 (talk) 14:11, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I have noticed. Great stuff, these have been red too long. I have started to go back and add the AP All-American honorable mention lists using Newspapers.com - that access has really helped fill the void since Google News shut down their newspaper archives. Incidentally, here is an AfD discussion going on about an old NFL player that you might find interesting. Rikster2 (talk) 14:17, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
I did see you've added some AA Honorable Mentions to a few pages - nice! Of course, that inevitably leads to more red links for me and you to add to our queue... but seriously, Newspapers.com is a god send. I haven't used Highbeam.com more than 4 or 5 times in the past two years, but Newspapers.com has already been invaluable and I've only had it for a week. I'm actually afraid of the wormhole/time-suck it's going to create by having all that access (a good problem to have, I suppose). For example, Bob Sims (NBL) has a newspaper source confirming him as having played in games for the Buffalo Bisons in 1946, yet his NBL basketball-reference page doesn't even have that! Nothing at washjeff.edu , http://gopresidents.com or any of the other best guesses. Unfortunately, the basketball team seems to have less history available than the football team.--GrapedApe (talk) 02:55, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

Not a problem, thanks for checking into it. I'm going to leave W&J in his article for now since two sources (albeit with questionable reliability) have him as a W&J player. Jrcla2 (talk) 12:15, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

Don't rely on ESPN

Stop using ESPN as your source for changing Texas Southern Lady Tigers basketball. ESPN posts things incorrect all the time. I have had to get ESPN to correct more than a dozen schools names already. When it comes to names, you need to rely on the schools website and the schools athletic guide. As you can see on their official website, they refer to the team as the Lady Tigers. You can also see their media guide says the team is the Lady Tigers. Bigddan11 (talk) 13:12, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

Wikipedia doesn't use what the school prefers to be called when other independent, reliable, third party sources refer to them otherwise. That's why every school with a satellite campus has an endash in their names (Arkansas–Pine Bluff, Arkansas–Little Rock, Minnesota State–Mankato, etc.), and it's also why not every SWAC school is "Lady [X]." If you feel the names should be changed en masse, that's something that needs to be discussed centrally at WT:CBBALL with many more participants. You are being lazy and only changing one or two articles' names. You're not even taking the time to have ALL related athletics articles and categories renamed. Like I said, this needs to be discussed to gain consensus at WT:CBBALL, with invitations to the WP:CFB and WP:COLLEGEBASEBALL folks as well. Jrcla2 (talk) 13:48, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
Additionally, you are literally copying and pasting entire articles into different pages, some with extensive editing histories, which is strictly forbidden on Wikipedia. Articles need to be WP:MOVED to preserve WP:EDITHISTORY. You've extensively violated WP:COPY-PASTE. For someone who thinks they know how the workings of Wikipedia operate, you aren't even practicing two of their major principles, consensus and preserving edit histories. Jrcla2 (talk) 13:54, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
I haven't copied or pasted anything. I wrote the article. It was you who copied and pasted it originally into a REDIRECT page (Texas State Tigers women's basketball was created by me as a redirect page to the Texas State Lady Tigers basketball). I should direct you to NBC Sports, which notes them as the Texas State Lady Tigers. I should direct you to the Houston Chronicle, which notes them as the Texas State Lady Tigers. Heck, if you go watch the ESPN3 broadcast of the SWAC semifinals last season, they refer to them as the Lady Tigers. The fact is you are relying on one source, when I have 5, and all of mine are just as reliable. Heck, if you actually go to any of the articles listed in the references, you would see that all of them refer to them as the Lady Tigers. And for the record, I have pointed out continually the errors ESPN keeps making on their site. Just last season ESPN noted a non-conference basketball game between Houston Baptist and Stephen F. Austin on November 19, 2013 as a conference game, despite Southland basketball not having any conference games until January 2014. That series had been set up when HBU was part of the Great West and was already made as a non-conference series. It wasn't until February 2014 that they got it corrected. When North Dakota removed Fighting Sioux from their school name, it took until the following October before ESPN made the change. Both of those errors occurred despite them having advance notice months in advance. ESPN has continually made errors and continues to do so.Bigddan11 (talk) 15:25, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
So you didn't redirect this back on July 3 eh? Jrcla2 (talk) 15:36, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
If you go to Yahoo, you'll see they actually list them all correctly. Texas Southern Lady Tigers basketball on Yahoo, Prairie View A&M Lady Pathers basketball on Yahoo, Arkansas Pine-Bluff Lionettes on Yahoo, Mississippi Valley State Devilettes on Yahoo. If you go to ESPN, it lists them as Tigers, Panthers, Lions, Delta Devils, etc. I could continue to go on, but I think that makes my point. And if you want to get specific about what you are referring to there, no, I didn't redirect it. I used the MOVE function at the top of the page, which I was informed after creating a new page for Albertsons Stadium. I'll admit that I copied and pasted the information from Bronco Stadium into Albertsons Stadium, and then I went into Bronco Stadium and used the #REDIRECT that I was aware of. Afterwards I was informed of about the move button. Before that time I was unaware of the move page. If you use the move button, it redirects the entire page to the new name of the page and will lit it as a redirect regardless. In a case like this where you have to go and redo the redirect page manually though, you have to copy and paste it as it is. Bigddan11 (talk) 15:49, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
That's a redirect, not a move. When an article is moved it says "Article moved from A to B" (this is what a MOVE looks like in edit history, and this is what a REDIRECT looks like). You're wrong, period. Literally every other editor on Wikipedia will tell you that because I have diffs to prove it. Anyway, back to the point. If you want to rename all of these schools, bring it up at a central discussion spot, WT:CBBALL, as I mentioned before. Then we can invite all of the editors from the college basketball, college football, and college baseball projects to form a consensus as to how to proceed. Jrcla2 (talk) 15:57, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
Why would you bring in football? Football doesn't have men's and women's teams. This would apply for basketball, soccer, and volleyball, the exception being Southern Utah where they use Thunderbirds for everything except women's basketball, where they use T-Birds. Sure baseball could be involved, but baseball and softball are two different groups all together, and it would apply to softball, not baseball. I never said I want to rename all the teams. What I said is I want it to be accurate. As a member of the women's basketball task force I am responsible for making sure these things are accurate, and in this case you keep making this one inaccurate since you are relying on one source compared to me relying on 6 sources, if I add Yahoo to my list. Bigddan11 (talk) 16:29, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
Just because the football team wouldn't be renamed doesn't mean the very active, very respected college football editors (who do LOTS of overlap on basketball articles and whose combined contributions probably total in the many hundreds of thousands of edits) shouldn't have a say. Truth be told I think their opinions on such matters mean more than yours. Jrcla2 (talk) 16:31, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
I understand that since I am one of those football editors you're referring to as well, and while I am focusing on BYU this year, I did do half the FCS ones last year. However anyone that is doing basketball articles is supposed to join the Wiki Basketball Project, so they should already be affiliated through that means. Those that don't do any of the basketball articles shouldn't be concerned at all, unless they are doing women's soccer or softball, since the differences in names usually apply for those sports as well. Do you know what the rules are around using school athletic logos?

The University of Dayton has a new athletic logo (see here). I wasn't sure what constitutes acceptable for these on WP and was wondering if you'd run into this before. Rikster2 (talk) 12:51, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

Unfortunately I don't really know much about school logo use. Jrcla2 (talk) 12:52, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
OK, thx for the quick reply. Rikster2 (talk) 12:59, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

Rikster, are you referring to the winged "D" design on their sports program website or something else? I am unfamiliar with the University of Dayton's old and new sports logo, so you can safely assume I know nothing about it before we start this discussion. Here are the basic rules:

1. Logos that consistent of only text or only letters are generally treated by Wikipedia NFCC enforcers as not being subject to enforceable copyright, and users may freely use them on whatever articles they choose (see, e.g., the University of Florida's "script Gators" logo used on rivalry and season articles for Florida Gators teams, File:Florida Gators script logo.png).

2. Logos that include any artistic, graphic or creative elements beyond the merely typographical are generally treated by Wikipedia NFCC enforcers as being subject to enforceable copyright, and their use should be well defined and limited to the major sports teams of a given program (i.e., the overall sports program, football, men's basketball), especially if a free-use all-text logo is available as an alternative. All non-free, copyright images must have a specific "fair use rationale" (or FUR) for each specific use of the non-free logo on Wikipedia (see, e.g., the FUR documentation for the University of Florida's "Gator head" logo, File:Florida Gators logo.svg).

3. Bottom line: unless you want to get involved in an endless argument about the fair use of non-free images with editors who know more about the applicable NFCC policies and guidelines than you do, I strongly suggest that you restrict the use of copyrighted logos to no more than four or five instances with properly documented FURs. Also, please do not cite the Gator head logo as an example of a reasonable number of fair uses of a copyrighted logo on Wikipedia, or you will re-open an old wound that will probably lead to further restrictions on that logo's use.

Let me know if you have any additional questions or examples you want to run by me. Hope this helps. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 13:27, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

Thanks DL. Image and logo use, for the most part, are not my (public) domain. ...sorry, had to make that corny joke. Jrcla2 (talk) 13:45, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
Ha. It's been recently suggested that I should employ my legal background to Wikipedia's greater benefit by getting more involved in NFCC enforcement issues, but I am by no means expert on our NFCC policy, guidelines and enforcement. Most of what I presently know comes from past enforcement encounters. That having been said, if you have any NFCC-related Q's, let me know and I'll try to get you an answer without bringing the NFCC enforcement establishment down on your head. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 13:53, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
Gotcha. I think for your own sanity, you ought to stay away from NFCC stuff on Wikipedia. Those guys get hammered by everyone who doesn't understand those laws. It's a thankless job, and it's one that would probably kill your desire to continue to edit. On a related note, that's why I stayed away from accepting an admin nomination a few years ago. I'm not here to police others or ensure protocol is carried out, that's not what gets me up, so to speak. I like adding content, standardizing topics I'm passionate about and familiar with, creating articles where there are gaps to be filled, etc. Jrcla2 (talk) 14:15, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
As I suggested to someone else the other day, I'd like to take a "helpful guidance" approach to NFCC issues, primarily within the sports and universities areas in which I normally operate and in which I am relatively well known. Rather than just telling good-faith editors what they cannot do pursuant to NFCC, I would like to be able to tell them what they can do and how to do it. One of my earliest negative experiences on Wikipedia was a dust-up over NFCC issues related to photos of a university-owned bronze statue that had been publicly displayed on the University of Florida campus since 1946. It presented a whole host of NFCC issues, and ultimately an exception was found for the photos. I have not forgotten my personal feelings as a good-faith newbie that experience generated. So, no, I'm not looking to be a one-man NFCC SWAT team. You're right: that's a quick formula for Wikipedia burnout. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 14:43, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

Hey, we need you to chime in on this. I've posted comments to each of these four Requested Move discussions identified on the WP:CFB talk page, by explaining, as clearly and succinctly as I know how, the established consensus naming conventions for college sports articles -- that is the university short name (e.g., "Florida State"), plus the university's varsity team's mascot (e.g., "Seminoles"), yields the sports team name (e.g., "Florida State Seminoles"), which is also the WP:COMMONNAME used by the mainstream media. This should be a slam dunk, but for the fact that these RM discussions have become hopelessly confused as to when it is appropriate to use the "Lady ___" construction in the article titles, and the inexperienced college sports editors who have been participating don't know the origins and reasons for our naming conventions. These discussions are being poked and prodded by a regular participant in WP:MOS and WP:AT to adopt a completely new nomenclature and naming scheme for American college sports articles. Unless more knowledgeable college sports editors participate in these discussions, we could wind up with four horrible precedents that could take months of additional wrangling to correct, leading to the inevitable instability in article titles as less knowledgeable editors start to implement what they perceive to be a new "consensus." US national team articles and WP:NBA

I see that you have removed the WP:NBA banner from templates used for Team USA articles. Is your objection only to adding it to templates, or all articles? It seems to be that with the heavy involvement of the NBA on Team USA since 1992, it is of interest to the NBA project. Fr example, Talk:1992 United States men's Olympic basketball team has included the NBA banner for years. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.—Bagumba (talk) 18:28, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

It falls under WP:BASKETBALL because it's an international competition that the NBA has no jurisdiction over. It's fine if WP:NBA project members want to work on, create, expand those kinds of templates, categories, and articles, but they do not abide by WP:NBA consensus. Most of the NBA players (all?) who are on the team right now played college basketball before entering the NBA, but it makes no sense to tag FIBA-anything with WP:CBBALL because that's not what the project is about. The rationale is the same for college basketball and NBA as far as these international competitions go.
  • WP:CBBALL = college basketball-specific templates/categories/articles
  • WP:NBA = NBA-specific templates/categories/articles
  • WP:BASKETBALL = any basketball topics not directly covered by the above two (i.e. high school, international, AAU)
For the 1992 Olympic team you cited, that can be a one-off exception because of the historical implications of finally allowing NBA players to participate on the team, and its ensuing sport-changing effect. But do the 2000 or 2004 squads deserve to be in WP:NBA? No, I strongly disagree with that. Anything beyond the three bullet points outlined above would have to be a case-by-case basis a la the original Dream Team. Jrcla2 (talk) 18:36, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
WikiProjects frequently overlap in interest in articles, so "not abide by WP:NBA consensus" should not be an issue. I think this is different than college basketball with international events in that "USA Basketball, the NBA and FIBA are partners"[1], the NBA has worked with FIBA "with the mutually stated goal of promoting the game by exporting the best of the best from the country that invented it" and the "N.B.A. can quantify myriad brand advancements that have grown the pie for owners and players since David Stern set sail on the league’s global adventure in the late 1980s"[2], and the US team provided "the league’s highest-rated television partner ... with content during the dregs of the summer."[3]Bagumba (talk) 21:14, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
And up until 1992, only amateurs were allowed to play for Team USA (i.e. college players), but there still isn't an overlap. WP:NBA should not be tagged on those articles, categories, and templates. Jrcla2 (talk) 23:43, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
Suprised, as it's not egregious like Newhart being tagged for NBA. Still, I'll move on in the interest of WP:BIKESHED. Cheers.—Bagumba (talk) 23:58, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

You're edit-warring, have been blocked for it before with confirmed sock puppets, and continue to add unencyclopedic content to Shabazz Napier. The names of his siblings are irrelevant. I'd suggest finding either different articles to edit or to stop trying to add that content back in. You'll be blocked shortly if you don't. Jrcla2 (talk) 18:56, 12 September 2014 (UTC)
(talk) um okay i didn't noticed his siblings but what about the stats table i thought you could have stats table that's not important
He's already got a stats table, and a nice, clean one at that. The one you're essentially re-tooling (for no benefit) is making unnecessarily larger. There is literally no point in that edit. Jrcla2 (talk) 19:05, 12 September 2014 (UTC)

Phillips 66er pix

Jrcla2 - I have three nice P66 pics with no articles for notable players - John Stanich, Scotty Steagall and Paul Courty. They redlink several articles (Stanich was on one of our World Cup teams, Steagall was a second round draft pick, Courty was an HM All-American, etc. would you be interested in creating articles (or at least stubs) for any of these? I will at some point, I just don't know when it will be. 23:10, 12 September 2014 (UTC)

I can take a stab during the work week. The weekends I'm usually too busy, ironically enough, to write an article. I'll start with Steagall when I get the chance. Jrcla2 (talk) 13:50, 13 September 2014 (UTC)
I'll take on Courty next, but leave Stanich for you so I can resume knocking out stubs of historical NBA/ABA/NBL players. Jrcla2 (talk) 13:03, 16 September 2014 (UTC)
Sounds good. I should be able to get to Stanich sometime this week. Rikster2 (talk) 18:10, 16 September 2014 (UTC)

Head Coaches on Team Basketball Navboxes

If there is a consensus that named coaches should not be included in the Navboxs, I suggest removing the "People" category from the template for the various basketball teams or changing the format to allow a pre-existing navbox to be imbedded in the general navbox. I tried approach #2 first, and then settled on approach #1. Approach #2 did not seem to work. Seems like having the "People" category with a stub set up titled "Head Coaches" would lead folks to populate the missing data in an effort to be more complete; at least it did for me.

I did a quick review and found the "People" section on every navbox I looked at so it appears to be a common set up which is carried over from year to year. — Preceding unsigned comment added by LUSportsFan (talkcontribs) 16:18, 15 September 2014 (UTC)

A rare occasion or two will have an editor trying to add a complete list of head coaches in. But the college football and college basketball projects (also NBA and NFL) have all eliminated them from the team navboxes because head coach-specific navboxes already exists. Almost all of the basketball team navboxes, by the way, were created by me within the past year. And the templates for such navboxes were determined by collaborative consensus among the above list WikiProjects. Jrcla2 (talk) 17:29, 15 September 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the information and the guidance. I noticed that you had a huge hand in creating them. Just to make sure I understand, is the current plan to just leave the "People" section in the nav box, but not populate it? If so, I'll leave it as is and make a mental note. It is very tempting for a relative newbie like me who sees something in red as a "to do" item. — Preceding unsigned comment added by LUSportsFan (talkcontribs) 23:19, 15 September 2014 (UTC)
The reason those red links to head coaches exist is because list-articles should be created instead. See Category:Lists of college basketball head coaches in the United States for example articles. Jrcla2 (talk) 13:00, 16 September 2014 (UTC)

Dwight Waller

What's the scoop with the club history showing separate years for the Denver Rockets? Did he play for someone in between? Normally I'd just merge the two into a 1969-1971 entry for the team, but I figured you had a reason for displaying it that way. Rikster2 (talk) 18:28, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

I meant to make the second stint 1971–72 because he never played in the 1970–71 season according to basketball-reference. Jrcla2 (talk) 18:39, 17 September 2014 (UTC)
Got it, thanks. Rikster2 (talk) 18:41, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

Mike Wallace

Hey, there. I'm not sure if I added that name to the list or not; he was in List of National Basketball Association players before that got broken up into subarticles. But anyway, I'm guessing that Mike Wallace is the player whom basketball-reference lists as Red Wallace. His real first name was Michael. Zagalejo^^^ 00:38, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

Ah! Ok thanks for the info. I've added him back in as Red Wallace per WP:COMMONNAME. Jrcla2 (talk) 12:41, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject Basketball

For what players and coaches is it appropriate to include in WikiProject basketball? Should American college-only and/or NBA-only (no national team, no international playing/coaching experience) be included? Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 01:08, 25 September 2014 (UTC)

What I've been going by for years now is this:
  • WP:CBBALL = college basketball-specific templates/categories/articles (can still include professionals as long as said professionals played or coached at the United States collegiate level)
  • WP:NBA = NBA-specific templates/categories/articles
  • WP:BASKETBALL = any basketball topics not directly covered by the above two (i.e. high school, international, AAU)
Now, keep in mind these WikiProjects can, and often do, overlap. For instance, Erick Green would will qualify for all three once he appears in a regular season NBA game this year – he qualifies for WP:CBBALL for being a college player at some point (let alone having won awards and been the national scoring champ); he qualifies for WP:BASKETBALL because he spent a season in Italy playing professionally; and he will very soon qualify for WP:NBA for having appeared in an NBA game. To be more specific to your question, no, American college-only and/or NBA-only players don't qualify for it. Jrcla2 (talk) 03:05, 25 September 2014 (UTC)
Got it. Thanks. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 03:35, 25 September 2014 (UTC)
What WikiProject banner(s) do we use for WNBA coaches and players? Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 18:45, 29 September 2014 (UTC)
I think {{WikiProject NBA|WNBA-task-force=yes|class=|importance=}} and maybe {{WikiProject Women's sport|class=|importance=}}? Jrcla2 (talk) 19:01, 29 September 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. I did not know the WikiProject NBA template had a WNBA option. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 21:09, 29 September 2014 (UTC)
Per Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Basketball/Archive4#WNBA, the task force Wikipedia:WikiProject Basketball/Women's basketball seems more appropriate for WNBA. Since I've been active in Wikipedia, I don't recall seeing any WNBA discussions at WikiProject NBA.—Bagumba (talk) 04:02, 30 September 2014 (UTC)
Fair enough. I will tag them with both WP:NBA (with WNBA option toggled) and WP:BB. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 05:07, 30 September 2014 (UTC)
Actually, I would suggest that WP:NBA not be used to tag any new WNBA articles. Ideally, all existing WNBA articles would be re-tagged from WP:NBA to WP:BB.—Bagumba (talk) 06:26, 30 September 2014 (UTC)

1954 NCAA All-Americans

Jrcla - I have been on newspapers.com trying to find the full 1954 AP honorable mention All-American list and can't seem to find it. I have found partial lists ("honorable mention selections included ..."), but so far no full list (first time I have run into this). Could you do me a favor and take a look? I am wondering if another set of eyes (who might use different search words) might have some luck here. I am happy to do the work to add this to the article, I'm just looking for a link. Let me know. Rikster2 (talk) 10:41, 26 September 2014 (UTC)

Hmm. I've spent about 10 minutes on it so far and the best I'm finding is this (top right corner), which says "Gene Shue of Maryland; Si Green and Jim Tucker of Duquesne; Paul Ebert of Ohio State and Bud Matheny of California head a list of 27 additional players given honorable mention." I'm going to try to use those players as some of my new keywords to find a more comprehensive list. Jrcla2 (talk) 13:34, 26 September 2014 (UTC)
Ok so I know that we're looking for the AP honorable mention list, but here is a comprehensive NEA HM list. Maybe we can use those players as more keywords for the AP list? Jrcla2 (talk) 13:39, 26 September 2014 (UTC)

Year in basketball

Rikster2 & Jrcla2 I see that the two of you do a lot of work maintaining the year in basketball pages.

I just finished updating all the WNBA awards, and many of the junior-college division winners (women).

I am now turning my attention to NCAA awards. It will be easier for me to do this if I group the awards into men, women and combined {Legends of coaching award} rather than the grouping that currently exists. This would mirror the professional breakdown. My main area of interest is women's basketball so I intend to be complete regarding the major women's awards and I will include the men's awards when there is one for each gender for example the Wooden award. I won't be able to work on the men's awards although I will make sure that I do not remove anything if it already exists.

Any objections?--S Philbrick(Talk) 13:49, 11 October 2014 (UTC)

I'll take Barnett. I've got to warn you that my life is getting busier now (I start a new career on Monday) and so my workday production will drop off exponentially, so editing Wikipedia, at least for the time being, will probably be more minor edits/cleanup/categories, etc. I'm not sure how much time I'll have to write decently developed articles. That said, I'll try to knock Barnett out to help close out 2009. Jrcla2 (talk) 19:58, 24 October 2014 (UTC)

Hello. Since you reverted my edit on the Wake Forest template saying WP:IAR, what about this edit that you made (12 December 2013) on the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association football navbox? Endashes in infoboxes

Saw your edit on Stan Szukala. I don't really care between endashes vs. commas for two consecutive wins of an award. But Bagumba is hard over on it as a continuation of a 3+ year span winning (e.g. 4× NBA All-Star 2004–2008). Pretty much I just stick to it to try and keep consistency.
