QR codes and Monmouthapedia

I just happened to notice Monmouthapedia and the idea looks great. I don't think I'll be able to help too much, as I'm in the US (closer to Tredyffrin Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania than Monmouth County, New Jersey). I have been messing around a bit with QR codes displayed outside, and have a couple of suggestions.

• 1st - your idea of working with local organizations is absolutely necessary for permanent postings of QR codes, but if folks are skeptical perhaps a temporary posting might work during a holiday or fete. I believe you can get numbers of views from the QRpedia people.
• 2nd - for permanent placement some sort of plastic or weatherized version of the QR code should be used. After a wet summer here, I've found out that codes printed on paper, even if covered in transparent tape on both sides, look like they will last forever, until a soaking rain hits.

Thanks very much for your encouragement and advice. The thing that jumps out at me that if you might be interested in is translation or development of the articles in languages other than English. If you can speak any other languages, or know anyone who would be interested then that would be great. I notice a lot of the existing articles in the area including the one for Monmouth are pretty underdeveloped in pretty much anything other than English.

It is a very bad idea to develop articles from scratch in the (article) namespace. That is why I have moved Duke of Beaufort Iron Bridge to User:Mrjohncummings/sandbox. Monmouthpedia

I'm all for new initiatives, but I think your efforts to promote Monmouthpedia on the Monmouth page are a bit WP:SPAMmy. Has the idea been publicised in independent local media at all? If so, we could link to that from the article on the town - but, due weight would mean that it would be some way down the article, not in the introduction. Hmm... Having read as much as I can, I'm still none the wiser as to what this is, or why it might be useful. Blurbs that don't know the difference between "its" and "it's" don't inspire me with confidence, but I hope I'll be proved wrong. Ghmyrtle (talk) 21:06, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

Hi John, I would avoid adding GLAM activities in article space, if the events are notable then uninvolved people can judge notability more accurately than those involved in the GLAM programme can. However, I would encourage creating pages on outreach:GLAM and consider creating a collaboration area as a project page on Wikipedia in the same style as WP:GLAM/BL, perhaps something like WP:GLAM/Wales might be realistic? Monmouthpedia (again)

Starting a new thread as we've moved on from the earlier discussion. Have you (or your contacts) considered the question of notability as it applies to these proposed articles. It occurs to me that what may be notable to local residents may not necessarily be notable in terms of WP's overall requirements, and it could be a waste of effort if people were to contribute articles on - say - individual buildings if editors elsewhere in the world then sought to delete them on notability grounds. Yes we've been talking about this quite a lot, it will be interesting to see what happens, we're going to play it by ear as we go through the articles to which ones pass and which ones don't get made (or get put to the bottom of the pile). Fortunately a lot of things in Monmouth are very old so have had notable pasts, It's up to the article creators to decide based on their own knowledge and notability whether they want to write something. I find notability in Wikipedia probably the least straight forward and the most open to interpretation and personal interest, there are examples of this everywhere e.g Wikipedia:WikiProject_U.S._Roads, List of Casio Calculators and List_of_handgun_cartridges. Also in different languages notability guidelines have different rules and interpretations and sometimes it's not called notability at all Notability_in_Wikipedia, I think there will always be people arguing for both sides Deletionism_and_inclusionism_in_Wikipedia.

Feel free to add any others possible articles you think would be good to consider doing.

I think it may be worth adding a health warning as some of the subjects do look "iffy" with regard to notability, however I'm surprised how may links there are. I intended to add to this list all the notable people with any association to Monmouth from Who's Who ..... and I had to give up after I'd just added those with a surname beginning with B. The last time we ran succussful events like this one we got 100 extra article in English at both the British Museum and Derby Museum. I would think we can find 100 new subjects in a town if we can find 100 in one museum. However I will add a health warning! Victuallers (talk) 16:24, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

With regards to the notability issues, perhaps you could consider setting up a dedicated MediaWiki site that you have ultimate control over? Statue Henry V Monmouth

Hi John. Two thoughts. Firstly, the title. It should be, at the very least, Statue of Henry V, Monmouth, or even Statue of King Henry V, Monmouth. But it can be easily moved - not a problem. Again though I'm a little bit worried about notability. Are there sufficient independent reliable sources specifically about the statue to justify a standalone article? Or, would it be better if fuller references were made in articles on Shire Hall, Monmouth, and the sculptor Charles Peart (which doesn't currently exist, but could be created). I'd favour developing articles on those two, rather than a small stubby article on the statue itself, but I'm not sure how that would fit in with your plans for the project. Yes I agree the title could be changed to something a little more snappy, I'd suggest it to User:Buckholt. As with a lot of these new articles I don't know enough about the statue so I'm not in a position :to say either way on it's notability. I guess it could be folded in together with another article at some later date if it doesn't develop much, it's only been 1 day. Charles Peart is already on the planned :articles list.

Sorry, for some reason I thought you'd started the article. I'll make the suggestion to User:Buckholt, or move it myself. As a general point, my advice would be to expand text in existing articles first, and then see if a new article is justified, rather than starting a new article and then thinking about merging it. Schools

I thought (half-heartedly!) about starting an article on Monmouth Comprehensive School, but then thought it would be much better if the kids at the school starting putting it together themselves. Has anyone contacted the school about being involved in the project? It would seem an ideal opportunity. Monmouth Heritage Trail

Now, can I find anything about the Angel Inn, to complete your list before I go to bed? I do like a challenge. Incidentally, the text on the Heritage Trail mentions Cornwall House but it's not on the list and I can't see it in the Blue Plaque document - although that being in Welsh only doesn't help. You are a one man army, have the blue plaque trail in front of me, no mention of Cornwall House. It's half a residential house now and half the Monmouth Beacon newspaper. You could ask Philbly he was involved in writing the trail book.

Well, your Heritage Trail list is complete. But some of the articles are desperately weak, and won't survive on Wikipedia on notability grounds unless you can get some people with detailed, and verifiable, local knowledge to add to them. The verifiability part is key. When I started on Wikipedia, I couldn't get my head round the need to reference everything I wrote and some of your enthusiasts have the same problem. It's difficult, as you really want the enthusiastic contributors, but they have to understand that material that is well sourced is the key to Wikipedia's credibility. Thanks for the invite to tea and cakes. I don't live near Monmouth anymore but spent my childhood there and have a strong affection for the place. heritage trail

I'll keep testing it, it works OK on my phone if I have it on its side. Do feel OK to fiddle. Creating a small version that doesnt work (an image map) that you click on and gives you the big one is possible. Is that an advantage? I think the table looks pretty but I find that just using mouse over of the map gives me that functionality. If we can get this working well then we can translate it easily. Oh and I had a look at how many listed buildings we havt done .... there are dozens and dozens! Oh and 300? thats a pretty credible totalVictuallers (talk) 22:58, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

Monmouthpedia video

Hello John,

Not sure if you remember me, I'm the guy from Wikimedia Canada, I was in Amsterdam for the GLAMcamp... Anyway, I saw your presentation about QRpedia and I was very interested. I start to work on a collaboration with Montréal city, and I wanted to show them the video. Since Montréal is in the French part of Canada, I tried to subtitle the video, but I'm having hard time to get words sometimes.

Do you think it would be possible for you to make an English transcription, it would be easier to translate afterwards.

Hello John, no need to use universalsubtitles.org, just this page is perfect! I LOOOOVE your accent, but I'm having trouble to understand clearly; I'm more used to English speakers in Canada/US!

Right now I'm having trouble to understand the phrase at 1:07. Ooooh, I just read your transcription, and he say : "great boon"... good to know! Also as soon as you finish the English trascription, I will fit the phrases with time stamps... that way Franch, Spanish German, etc. will be able to translate very easily. Dear John, I know I should be grateful to the volunteers who have set the thing up, but I really can't see myself staying for longer than a couple of hours, and I'm sure most of the people who are travelling from any distance would prefer to have a chance to meet during daylight hours. Hi Deb The places are all a 2 minute walk from each other and all free entry, the plan is to use the Shire Hall room as the base and then go to other places as and when people want to. If people are paralysed by indecision then I'll draw up a timetable, I was thinking people could do 5 minute presentations on things they're interested in if they want, this would probably need a fixed time. Flaming hoop image on Dog agility

I have reverted your addition of the image showing a dog jumping through a flaming hoop. If this image is to be added to the article (and I don't think it should be) it should be made very clear that it is not and never has been a standard or optional obstacle in any agility venue.

Newport Rising video clip

It's the first of I think 8 video clips that are going to be uploaded by the Shire Hall in Monmouth, it should be longer than 57 seconds, I downloaded it and it plays fine, I have problems once it's run out of info and needs to buffer it wont restart, think it's a problem within Wikipedia. Improving the Monmouthpedia article

First of all, John, congratulations on the huge success of the project launch. You have literally put Monmouth on the internet map. I would however strongly suggest that you and your collaborators should now devote some of your time and energy to improving the Monmouthpedia article which is very rudimentary at the moment. For a start, substantial improvements could be made by including some of the information now hidden in Wikipedia:GLAM/MonmouthpediA. In addition, there have been so many press reports over the past few days that more of the reactions and explanatins could also be included. It would also be useful to encourage your multilingual community to start on other language versions of the page. Some practical details for users on how to use their smart phones in the town would also be useful (perhaps together with basic technical requirements). Finally, I have been wondering whether you have been working with Europeana on this. They have similar goals and could no doubt provide support, collaborators and even resources. Hi Ipigott, I think there's a COI issue with the MonmouthpediA article. I've been advising those close to the subject to let others improve it. There are over 250 newspaper or similar stories in the last week and these should be a good source (they are not all wrong!). I have put some comments on the other language versions as they chose a picture that was my "artists impression" and not the real thing. Could you improve the article?

We did get a sort done through the Europeanna database by David Haskiya for Monmouth related resources but the usual issue of license prevented us from exploiting them. We have found that the easist route is to get the images before they are aggregated (via local museum) although WMUK has spoken to Welsh cultural leads and in the past Europeanna about releasing more resources. As you may have noticed, I have indeed been making some additions to the article and will continue to do so. It would be great if we could report on user reactions too. I hope that some of them will also be reported in the press soon rather than just on blog sites. There are in fact far more than 250 articles. Here in Luxembourg, for instance, you received wide coverage in the French and German press and in Denmark, coverage was also wide. The problem is that if you search for news with Google or Yahoo, the hits are usually limited to English if you have an English-language computer or phone. You only get the "foreign" hits if you change the language set up. Anyway, in regard to Europeana, I was not just thinking of access to existing resources but rather in terms of encouraging wider participation of local residents of towns across Europe in a project along similar lines. I may be moving too fast but it seems to me that many of those in the library and museum communities – in countries like Norway and Denmark for a start – might like to launch their own local initiatives using QR coding. I was also wondering whether a tie-up with Geocaching would be feasible. I've noticed that in many countries the rapidly expanding number of Geocaching articles are written in both the local language and English. Have you been able to make use of these in Monmouth? Oh I see. I know Jill Cousins is aware of QRpedia (a bit) as I met here at a Europeana conference in Vienna when Monmouth was just a glint in our eyes. Ive only read about geocaching but I'd be intrigued to see it mixed up with our wiki town. Is there an enthusiast who might be interested. Obviously we coulds hide stuff either in the real world, the virtual or in the QR codes that portal between those two worlds. My Skype address is Victuallers1. I'm busy until Saturday.

No rush to reply but just to take an example, Geocaching has the following description on St Peter's Church, Dixton: "St. Peter's is situated on the banks of the River Wye, just north of Monmouth. This attractive whitewashed building dates back to at least the 12th Century, though was probably a holy site before then. The Book of Llandaff refers to the existence of a church, or monastery, on this site in about 735, when it was already described as an "old church" (henllan). Later charters refer to its fishing rights on the River Wye. At that time, it was dedicated to the Welsh saint Tydiwg, or Tadeocus.The Welsh name of the parish, Llandydiwg, and ultimately the name Dixton, derives from that of the saint." See here. You can that this is actually taken from Wikipedia but there are very many original entries which cannot be found in Wikipedia. Tiny villages often have a dozen or more Geocaching sites. The advantage of working with Geocaching is that their project has been based on GPS and smart phones from the beginning. That would be great. If you could ring them and say its a Good Article and was part of the Monmouthpedia project they might even let you in the house to take photos. We could use photos of all of the features mentioned in the article including the lake and boathouse, streams and gardens/walls and drive, gate houses etc aside from the main house exterior and interior of course.

Gibraltar navboxes

Hi John, I have some concerns regarding the above.

I think there are just too many Plants in the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens to display in a navbox. Same goes for Template:Flora and fauna in Gibraltar. They're near impossible to navigate. I think it will make more sense to use categories instead. Template:People and Gibraltar will be tricky because there's a fine line as to who is considered Gibraltarian (see List of Gibraltarians). Not everyone born in Gibraltar is automatically Gibraltarian, besides the term was coined in the 1920s so it cannot be used to describe people born in Gibraltar before then anyway. This template could also get pretty large... The Template:Military in Gibraltar overlaps with the History, Buildings and Places navboxes so this one may be obsolete. A Template:Fortifications of Gibraltar navbox may be useful though...

I had to prepare this quite quickly - copy for you

It could be that you were unaware of my declared conflicts of interest, however it wasn't your job to be aware, however they were well known. Wikimedia UK were managing this. They said, Roger "... has not voted in any Wikimedia UK decisions about Monmouthpedia since the start of his consultancy relationship with MCC or on any decisions about Gibraltarpedia or QRpedia." Wikimedia UK made monthly reports to the Wikimedia Foundation detailing all significant events. They web cast their board meetings. They had little or no secrets.

Over the past ten months, Roger Bamkin, a Wikimedia UK trustee led two Wikipedia-related projects, Monmouthpedia and Gibraltarpedia. Both of these projects were based on QRpedia which is a service that has been offered free to the movement via Wikimedia UK. As part of this award winning work, the Foundation signed a trademark agreement with Monmouthshire County Council and later with the Government of Gibraltar. Wikimedia UK were well aware of the trustee's commercial involvement in both cases and the Foundation as part of due diligence would have found that out by talking to the trustee, Wikimedia UK or the people they were signing the agreement with. Roger stood again for the board and made it clear that he was a paid consultant of Monmouthshire County Council working on Monmouthpedia in his statement to the members. He was re-elected. Roger has received no payments apart from expenses from Wikimedia UK. He has helped create two projects which align with Wikimedia UK's vision and they have only had to contribute a minority financial contribution.

Coincidentally this is the same trustee who led the Wikimedia UK board to become a registered charity and to obtain fundreds of thousands of pounds worth of gift aid. Roger Bamkin stood down as chair here when he took "Monmouthshire County Council (Wikimedia UK partners for the Monmouthpedia project) as a client".

The recent edits on the Gibraltarpedia project are shown here. There are just the additions being made to the English Wikipedia. In the last several weeks volunteers have added 200 new articles in many languages despite a campaign to delete articles on the English Wikipedia. (Most of the new articles are not in English)

As a result of the action of the Wikimedia Foundation, Wikimedia UK have "agreed" to not take part in the fundraiser this year. Question:If it hadn't been for this investigation then would WMUK have been welcomed to join the fundraiser?

Thanks, as they say a photo is worth a 1000 words. It would be great if you could encourage a Geograph type project for Gibraltar and surrounding area to try to photograph it in great detail. Like a metre grid square for it or something and draw up a grid square with photos like geograph documenting it. See what the other Gibraltarpedia folks and the Gib government think. Islamic Gibraltar

Take a look at User:Prioryman/Islamic Gibraltar - any thoughts before I put it into article space?

Trafalgar Cemetery challenge

This Sunday is the Battle of Trafalgar commemoration day - there will be an annual commemoration event in Trafalgar Cemetery. It would be great if we could get a 5x expansion done in time for the article to be ready for DYK for that day. Could you see what you can do with it? Photos

Great work on the photos, John - keep them coming!

I'm planning to start a piece on the Fortifications of Gibraltar – they were really my main focus of interest when I visited, with Clive Finlayson's eponymous book serving as a guide. There are a couple of things that you could do that would be really useful. First, I imagine that the Garrison Library and Gibraltar Museum is likely to have old maps of the fortifications (19th century and earlier). If there's any chance of getting digital copies, that would be great. Second, we really need better (higher-resolution) pictures of the 1865 model of Gibraltar in the museum. We do have pictures like File:Gibraltar Model 1865 (10).jpg but they are relatively low-res. Ideally I'd like to have some close-up views of key areas of the defences, especially the main bastions and gates. I've learned that the Royal Engineers apparently have a similar period model in Chatham, which I'm trying to track down.

On another front, I'm interested in covering the Calpe Hunt. There is a map in the museum, on the wall above a staircase I believe, showing the area in the Campo where the hunt was active. Do you think there's any chance of getting a copy of that, and possibly some photos of the museum's collection of hunt-related artefacts? Prioryman (talk) 00:15, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

Hey, John. Sorry for the very late reply, I kinda mistook your message for an automated one, heh. :P The model of the neanderthal skull is awesome. We have a sort of clearing house for reconstructions in Wikipedia:WikiProject Palaeontology/Paleoart review, btw. It ensures that the reconstructions are accurate enough for inclusion. However, since I'm not familiar with photogrammetry, you may not need to do that in this case. The reconstructions vetted there are those made without access to the actual physical fossils, and that is obviously not the case with photogrammetry. Anyway I'm afraid I'm a bit too busy with some WP:PALEO stuff at the moment, so no time for more Gibraltar articles. If you have access to more fossils from the Gibraltar Museum though, it would be nice to have pictures of them for possible future articles.-- OBSIDIAN†SOUL 18:08, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

My first draft of History of Gibraltar is now pretty much done - it's currently just over 9,000 words. I will be going through it to polish it up and add extra references where necessary, but could you please (1) let me have some feedback and (2) add any links where you think they might be pertinent? I've got a GA reviewer lined up and I intend to submit it for GA next weekend, with a view to getting it to GA status by the end of this month and to get it through FAC by the end of March, in time for the 11 April tercentenary of the Treaty of Utrecht. Thanks very much, there's about 200 more and they're adding more videos to the channel at the moment, it's just a case of bandwidth really, I'm using a Firefox pluging called BYTubeD - Bulk YouTube video Downloader which can dowload every video from a specific user. Would be cool to have a program that sideloaded videos rather than having to download them and them upload them again, dont know if this is possible though, maybe through a cloud storage service like dropbox or google drive. Hi Hawkeye, sorry for not getting back to you, the neutron detector is being stored in a store away from the museum the other side of London in Blythe House, getting access is difficult, even for me as someone who works at the museum. I'm putting together a proposal for the museum to release the images it has of it's objects in storage to commons so that people can easily access them and add them to articles etc. The current system is not really very helpful at all, the museum have released a few videos as trial which is a promising start, also the National Media Museum (another part of the Science Museum Group) have recently released 100s of images under an open license which I've moved over to commons from flickr today.

In that case, tell them this: that the humble neutron detector represents the golden age of British science. That when it was made in 1932, there were no less than nine Nobel Prize winners working at the Cavendish Laboratory: Thomson (Physics, 1906), Rutherford (Chemistry, 1908), Aston (Chemistry, 1922), Chadwick (Physics, 1935), Wilson (Physics, 1927), Blackett (Physics, 1948), Cockcroft (Physics, 1951), Walton (Physics, 1951) and Kapitsa (Physics, 1978). That they didn't do their research with multi-million dollar accelerators, they did it with simple but ingenious gadgets literally made from string and sealing wax like the neutron detector. I couldn't agree more. I've got this idea that you could use Wikipedia to not only give people information in their own language in museums (something museums don't really have the capacity to do most of the time) but also to show people objects not on display and take them to parts of the museum that are not accessible by the public, both the Science Museum and Natural History Museum can only show a few % of their collection (NHM has something like 70 million specimens). I've built a prototype for the Natural History Museum, the Last Impressions section works fairly well (with some gaps). The links for the objects use QRpedia so it redirects you to the article in your browser's language meaning people can walk round the museum in Korean or French or whatever either actually there or virtually. Science on Wikipedia

Hi John, I've noticed that science writing on Wikipedia is often just not as accessible as it could be, and I have been wondering for a while what is to be done about this besides just rewriting everything myself. Wikipedia's science writing in general could surely be greatly improved by greater awareness of the best ways to structure information, and especially how to introduce a topic. This is something I'd hope and expect to see people from the science museums naturally taking a lead on if they're contributing to Wikipedia, but I find myself at a loss for how best to engage the wider Wikipedia community in the project. As Wikimedian in Residence for two of London's science museums, I wondered if you might have any ideas about this?

To give you an idea where I'm coming from, this advice from Everything2 represents the most important lesson I ever learned about writing for a wider audience:

Start with an introduction which enables the reader to understand what they are going to be reading about. What's so good about this thing? What will it do for me? Why is it important?

Always bear in mind that it's easy to forget the limits of people's understanding. Be careful when using scientific terminology in your introduction to your topic - you dont want to lose your audience before you've even begun. You need to remember that science is like a foreign language to many people. Put yourself in their shoes - remember that they are reading this because they want to learn, so try to explain in language they will understand.

Sorry for the long time in replying, I wanted to have something to show you when I did, I agree that scientific articles on Wikipedia are not wonderfully helpful for a general audience. I'm hoping there are ways to address this, I think one way would be to better link Wikipedia with it's sister projects, Wikiversity especially (it may even help more people to contribute to it) and possibly even other open knowledge projects like Khan Academy.

I think videos may be a really nice way of addressing some of these issues, Im hoping to do some videos with people in the museums talking about their specialisms soon. Today the Science Museum released these 3 videos under an open license, I think they're very nice indeed.

I couldn't help noticing the Muybridge (sp?) photo series that you've uploaded, especially the baseball batter. I'm not sure that he uses modern technique, but it looks similar. It also looks dangerous - do you know what a foul tip is? I also know that these series are often put together into gifs (I don't know how), but see the following

WOW! Almost perfect (just slightly faster would be perfect). This is one of the great things about Wikipedia: folks like you! See Batting (baseball). The motion makes a couple of things very clear: it's almost a modern swing - except the footwork is almost non-existant (front foot should lift slightly and move forward - driving off the back leg) and he swings down rather than level or slightly up. Also the suspense of a possible foul tip is incredible, though Muybridge probably didn't realize what he was doing.

50 images from the Science Museum collection

The Science Museum in London have agreed to release 50 of it's images (at a medium resolution) under a Wikimedia compatible license. Do you have anything in particular you need that they have? Feel free to give me a list if you like. The 2 websites that the images would be available from are:
