Peace Dove Christmas

Peace is a state of balance and understanding in yourself and between others, where respect is gained by the acceptance of differences, tolerance persists, conflicts are resolved through dialog, peoples rights are respected and their voices are heard, and everyone is at their highest point of serenity without social tension.
Happy Holidays. ―Buster7  19:51, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

Merry Merry

  Happy Christmas!
Hello Ealdgyth,
Early in A Child's Christmas in Wales the young Dylan and his friend Jim Prothero witness smoke pouring from Jim's home. After the conflagration has been extinguished Dylan writes that

Nobody could have had a noisier Christmas Eve. And when the firemen turned off the hose and were standing in the wet, smoky room, Jim's Aunt, Miss. Prothero, came downstairs and peered in at them. Jim and I waited, very quietly, to hear what she would say to them. She said the right thing, always. She looked at the three tall firemen in their shining helmets, standing among the smoke and cinders and dissolving snowballs, and she said, "Would you like anything to read?"

My thanks to you for your efforts to keep the 'pedia readable in case the firemen chose one of our articles :-) Best wishes to you and yours and happy editing in 2019. MarnetteD|Talk 20:31, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

Happy Christmas

  I salute you.

There is nothing I can give you which you have not, but there is much that while I cannot give, you can take.

No heaven can come to us unless our hearts find rest in it today. Take heaven.

No peace lies in the future which is not hidden in this present instant. Take peace.

The gloom of the world is but a shadow. Behind it, yet within our reach, is joy. Take joy.

And so at this Christmastime, I greet you, with the prayer that for you, now and forever, the day breaks and the shadows flee away.

Welcome to the 2019 WikiCup!

Hello and Happy New Year!

Welcome to the 2019 WikiCup, the competition begins today. If you have already joined, your submission page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and we will set up your submissions page. One important rule to remember is that only content on which you have completed significant work during 2019, and which you have nominated this year, is eligible for points in the competition, the judges will be checking! Any questions should be directed to one of the judges, or left on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will make it to round 2. Good luck! Administrators' newsletter – January 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2018).

  Guideline and policy news

  1. G14 (new): Disambiguation pages that disambiguate only zero or one existing pages are now covered under the new G14 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-disambig}}; the text is unchanged and candidates may be found in Category:Candidates for speedy deletion as unnecessary disambiguation pages.
  2. R4 (new): Redirects in the file namespace (and no file links) that have the same name as a file or redirect at Commons are now covered under the new R4 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-redircom}}; the text is unchanged.
  3. G13 (expanded): Userspace drafts containing only the default Article Wizard text are now covered under G13 along with other drafts (discussion). Such blank drafts are now eligible after six months rather than one year, and taggers continue to use {{db-blankdraft}}.

  Technical news

  • Starting on December 13, the Wikimedia Foundation security team implemented new password policy and requirements. Privileged accounts (administrators, bureaucrats, checkusers, oversighters, interface administrators, bots, edit filter managers/helpers, template editors, et al.) must have a password at least 10 characters in length. All accounts must have a password:
  1. At least 8 characters in length
  2. Not in the 100,000 most popular passwords (defined by the Password Blacklist library)
  3. Different from their username
User accounts not meeting these requirements will be prompted to update their password accordingly. More information is available on MediaWiki.org.
  • Blocked administrators may now block the administrator that blocked them. This was done to mitigate the possibility that a compromised administrator account would block all other active administrators, complementing the removal of the ability to unblock oneself outside of self-imposed blocks. A request for comment is currently in progress to determine whether the blocking policy should be updated regarding this change.
  • {{Copyvio-revdel}} now has a link to open the history with the RevDel checkboxes already filled in.

  Arbitration

  Miscellaneous

  • Accounts continue to be compromised on a regular basis. Evidence shows this is entirely due to the accounts having the same password that was used on another website that suffered a data breach. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately.
  • Around 22% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 20% in June 2018. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless of whether you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.

Hillstead Museum

Hillstead is not hyphenated. I live near it and have often visited the museum. Ctirish (talk) 18:12, 6 January 2019 (UTC)

You may want to advise the Hill-Stead Museum that their name isn't hyphenated, as they don't appear to be aware. ‑ Iridescent 19:20, 6 January 2019 (UTC)

OTD January 13, 2019

Removing the mention of "Jews" from the Doctors' plot description in OTD is peculiar, being that Pravda's report is well-documented as being founded on antisemitic motives. The phrasing of the blurb is also quite credulous of the existence of the alleged plot, especially in light of the claims of fabrication. 2600:8800:1880:9A3:5604:A6FF:FE38:4B26 (talk) 18:02, 12 January 2019 (UTC)

www

Hi. At Special:Diff/881435801, you stripped the "www." prefix from the corrientes.gov.ar URL. This is, however, invalid. www.corrientes.gov.ar points to 181.14.206.138 but corrientes.gov.ar points to 181.14.206.139, which is not ping-able and refuses connections on port 80. It could be a VPN entry point or some other kind of non-web host or nothing at all. While not common, this is sometimes the case, and we can't assume the prefix can be stripped without actually verifying that it still points to the same address (just being a valid, even ping-able, address is not enough). Was this done by a script? —[AlanM1(talk)]— 20:02, 2 February 2019 (UTC)

Yes, since the edit summary says "General formatting by script" and links to User:Ohconfucius/script, it did indeed occur by a script. Ealdgyth - Talk 20:09, 2 February 2019 (UTC)
I did look there first. No mention of URL or www (on that page, anyway). Which script was it (so I can follow up with the developer)? (ed.) —[AlanM1(talk)]— 09:55, 3 February 2019 (UTC)
Okay... two things - one, all of the scripts on that page are done by the same editor - so you can follow up with the developer because there's no confusion about who the developer is. Two - the edit summary says "general formatting" - and the second script listed on that page is User:Ohconfucius/script/formatgeneral which has the explanatory text of "fixes some general formatting". So by the process of deduction, I thought it was pretty obvious which script was in use. Ealdgyth - Talk 13:27, 3 February 2019 (UTC)
It wasn't obvious to me – that's why I asked. Thanks for your time. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 13:38, 3 February 2019 (UTC)

  Guideline and policy news

  • A request for comment is currently open to reevaluate the activity requirements for administrators.
  • Administrators who are blocked have the technical ability to block the administrator who blocked their own account. A recent request for comment has amended the blocking policy to clarify that this ability should only be used in exceptional circumstances, such as account compromises, where there is a clear and immediate need.
  • A request for comment closed with a consensus in favor of deprecating The Sun as a permissible reference, and creating an edit filter to warn users who attempt to cite it.

  Technical news

  • A discussion regarding an overhaul of the format and appearance of Wikipedia:Requests for page protection is in progress (permalink). The proposed changes will make it easier to create requests for those who are not using Twinkle. The workflow for administrators at this venue will largely be unchanged. Additionally, there are plans to archive requests similar to how it is done at WP:PERM, where historical records are kept so that prior requests can more easily be searched for.

  Miscellaneous

  • Voting in the 2019 Steward elections will begin on 08 February 2019, 14:00 (UTC) and end on 28 February 2019, 13:59 (UTC). The confirmation process of current stewards is being held in parallel. You can automatically check your eligibility to vote.
  • A new IRC bot is available that allows you to subscribe to notifications when specific filters are tripped. This requires that your IRC handle be identified.

Help me understand please

Tatiana von Metternich: she is relevant for the organizations that were listed in the infobox, especially the Rheingau Musik Festival which wouldn't exist without her, and the Order for which she held a leading position. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:00, 20 February 2019 (UTC)

They weren't displayed - the infobox does not support that parameter. (You can see this at the old diff here) Because the infobox does not display non-supported parameters, they were in a maintenance category - Category:Pages using infobox noble with unknown parameters. If they are relevant to her, a better infobox needs to be chosen that would actually display them. Ealdgyth - Talk 16:09, 20 February 2019 (UTC)

Hello Ealdgyth. Long time no chat. If I may ask, if some sources refer to someone as a bailiff and others as a regent, is this a real discrepancy or are the terms overlapping or even interchangeable? Berthold of Hohenberg was the bailiff/regent of Conrad IV after the latter's death... ♦ Lingzhi2 (talk) 07:25, 24 February 2019 (UTC)

PS: Baker 2015, p. 18. still doesn't point to any citation on The Holocaust. ♦ Lingzhi2 (talk) 07:32, 24 February 2019 (UTC)
likely they mean he held both offices. But I can’t be positive of that. Baliff in English history is a local position for someone during a lifetime...regent is rarely used in England and almost always for high nobility when under age and is not localized. A regent holds power throughout the youth’s lands. As for Baker, no clue. Ealdgyth - Talk 13:24, 24 February 2019 (UTC)
I'm working on Manfred, King of Sicily with an eye to ward FAC in a few weeks. I have been getting excellent info from Surtsicna. Different sources say different things about some details, not only about what office(s) (if that's the term) Berthold held, but also who held what office (Pietro Ruffo is another name involved...). After this, I may work on another relatively small bio, or maybe Sicilain Vespers, or maybe even Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor. If you wanna join in, your help would be valued. If not, good luck over at there at The Holocaust. ♦ Lingzhi2 (talk) 16:07, 24 February 2019 (UTC)
