April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
  • updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

Orphaned non-free image File:Denver International Airport Logo.svg

Thanks for uploading File:Denver International Airport Logo.svg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 17:20, 10 April 2018 (UTC)

Select Survey Invite

I'm working on a study of political motivations and how they affect editing. I'd like to ask you to take a survey. The survey should take no more than 1-2 minutes. Your survey responses will be kept private. Our project is documented at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Wikipedia_%2B_Politics.

Your survey Link: https://uchicago.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9S3JByWf57fXEkR?Q_DL=56np5HpEZWkMlr7_9S3JByWf57fXEkR_MLRP_e2s1xv9UsF6IBSt&Q_CHL=gl

I am asking you to participate in this study because you are a frequent editor of pages on Wikipedia that are of political interest. We would like to learn about your experiences in dealing with editors of different political orientations.

Sincere thanks for your help! Porteclefs (talk) 16:50, 19 April 2018 (UTC)

Burnie Burns

I noticed that Burnie Burns was pending changes protected by you back in 2013 with an indefinite expiration time due to persistent vandalism. I don't see a particular reason anymore to have it continue being at that level of protection, and given that the pages of all the other Rooster Teeth founders on wikipedia (Joel Heyman, Matt Hullum, Geoff Ramsey, and Gus Sorola) are currently unprotected, would you consider removing this protection? -Vanstrat ((🗼)) 03:22, 21 April 2018 (UTC)

Cause of death

We all die via some means or 'cause', though? Gotta await the autopsy report--Kieronoldham (talk) 01:34, 14 May 2018 (UTC)

@Kieronoldham: - true, but "natural causes" is more a vague term that could be anything. It's moreso a classification/general vague term, and I don't think it's of particular use in the infobox unless it's a specific cause (some would even argue that it isn't useful if it isn't particularly relevant to the subject's notability either). [Wikigraphists Bootcamp (2018 India)] Discussion on selection criteria

Greetings, Wikigraphists Bootcamp (2018 India) is a proposed workshop funded by the Wikimedia Foundation, to equip users from the Indian community with the skills to illustrate using Inkscape and similar tools. This is basically the first of its kind workshop. So we've opened up an open discussion on Meta-Wiki about the selection criteria for participants. As you've a quite decent experience in this area, your opinion will be very helpful. Please given your comments at m:Talk:Wikigraphists Bootcamp (2018_India)#Ideal participation. The discussion will be open until the end of 25 May 2018. Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk • mail) 11:43, 22 May 2018 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Richard Sherzan

The article Richard Sherzan has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this biography of a living person will be deleted after seven days unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp/dated}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within seven days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. Jmertel23 (talk) 20:42, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

Your submission at Articles for creation: Bill Hitchens has been accepted

Bill Hitchens, which you submitted to Articles for creation, has been created.
The article has been assessed as Stub-Class, which is recorded on the article's talk page. You may like to take a look at the grading scheme to see how you can improve the article.

You are more than welcome to continue making quality contributions to Wikipedia. If your account is more than four days old and you have made at least 10 edits you can create articles yourself without posting a request. However, you may continue submitting work to Articles for Creation if you prefer.

Thank you for helping improve Wikipedia!

Speedy deletion nomination of Draft:Bill Hitchens

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Draft:Bill Hitchens requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from http://www.house.ga.gov/Documents/Biographies/hitchensBill.pdf. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. DGG ( talk ) 19:37, 20 July 2018 (UTC)

@RHaworth: @DGG: - I am just seeing this now, but if you take a look at the article history, I think that the unambiguous copyright infringement should have been reverted (as I had done in the past), rather than the whole article deleted. I merely created the initial stub. Connormah (talk) 05:53, 25 July 2018 (UTC)

NH articles

Hello, and thanks for starting all of those articles on New Hampshire legislators! That is a huge task. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits.   Hello. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.

When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:

Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)

I noticed your recent edit to Chris Bradshaw does not have an edit summary. Please be sure to provide a summary of every edit you make, even if you write only the briefest of summaries. The summaries are very helpful to people browsing an article's history.

Edit summary content is visible in:

Please use the edit summary to explain your reasoning for the edit, or a summary of what the edit changes. You can give yourself a reminder to add an edit summary by setting Preferences → Editing →   Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary. Thanks! Me-123567-Me (talk) 23:43, 25 November 2018 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of File:Tonka Logo.jpg

The file File:Tonka Logo.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

MLAs

When you're creating the initial stubs about the newly elected MLAs, just a reminder about two things:

  1. A Wikipedia citation must be to the complete citation details: the URL and the title of the article and the name of the media outlet it came from and the date on which it was published. A bare URL is not an acceptable reference, and complete citation details are always mandatory.
  2. The article needs to already have the relevant categories on it before you hit save the first time.

Basically, if you want to create the stub, you need to make sure nobody has to come in behind you to clean up those basic details. Obviously you don't have to write a feature-quality article about their entire life and career right off the top, there's lots of time for that to develop — but with all the work that has to be done on election night, it shouldn't be necessary for anybody to have to do a followup round of actually double-checking whether your new articles are even categorized at all. Thanks. Bearcat (talk) 03:56, 17 April 2019 (UTC)

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Dale Hoggins moved to draftspace

An article you created back on 15 February 2015, Dale Hoggins, does not have enough content, sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more content and citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Any information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Sidney Crosby's duplicate category

Hi Connormah, this is an urgent message. Some user by the name of User:Shadowbryan25 has added Category:People from Halifax, Nova Scotia but there is already Category:Sportspeople from Halifax, Nova Scotia. I cannot remove Category:People from Halifax, Nova Scotia because the article is protected indefinitely. For my request could you go to the article titled Sidney Crosby and remove Category:People from Halifax, Nova Scotia and talk to User:Shadowbryan25 do not restore Category:People from Halifax, Nova Scotia because it was already in a subcategory. There is already Category:People from Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia because is Cole Harbour is part of Halifax, Nova Scotia. If User:Shadowbryan25 continues to restore the Category:People from Halifax, Nova Scotia category. Tell User:Shadowbryan25 to stop restoring the Category:People from Halifax, Nova Scotia category. Thanks for the urgent message, don't forget to follow the article for the category restoring and I will look forward to your reply. 207.102.255.231 (talk) 00:21, 14 July 2019 (UTC)

Mike Cassidy (Canadian football)

Hi Connormah. I'm pretty sure this obituary is for Mike Cassidy (Canadian football). According to a public records search, a Francis Q. Cassidy born April 21, 1926, lived in Myrtle Beach in 2005. If Cassidy remained in the US, this is the only one who fits the profile. Hope it helps you find something more conclusive! Canadian Paul 03:21, 27 September 2019 (UTC)

@Canadian Paul: - bingo! I had missed that in my searching (was only able to find that he was at least alive in the last 10 years). I have a 1994 clip that stated he was living in South Carolina at the time as well, so that should do it, I think. He was also in Florida by at least 1961, as per another clip from Saskatchewan. Thanks! Connormah (talk) 03:36, 27 September 2019 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of File:Tsinghua University Logo.svg

The file File:Tsinghua University Logo.svg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Same logo is on Commons with a credible public domain argument, just with different colors

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. 2019 US Banknote Contest

  US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here
