NPR Newsletter No.13 18 September 2018

Hello Argento Surfer, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

The New Page Feed currently has 2700 unreviewed articles, up from just 500 at the start of July. For a while we were falling behind by an average of about 40 articles per day, but we have stabilised more recently. Please review some articles from the back of the queue if you can (Sort by: 'Oldest' at Special:NewPagesFeed), as we are very close to having articles older than one month.

Project news
As part of this project, the feed will have some larger updates to functionality next month. Specifically, ORES predictions will be built in, which will automatically flag articles for potential issues such as vandalism or spam. Copyright violation detection will also be added to the new page feed. See the projects's talk page for more info.
Other
Moving to Draft and Page Mover
  • Some unsuitable new articles can be best reviewed by moving them to the draft space, but reviewers need to do this carefully and sparingly. It is most useful for topics that look like they might have promise, but where the article as written would be unlikely to survive AfD. If the article can be easily fixed, or if the only issue is a lack of sourcing that is easily accessible, tagging or adding sources yourself is preferable. If sources do not appear to be available and the topic does not appear to be notable, tagging for deletion is preferable (PROD/AfD/CSD as appropriate). See additional guidance at WP:DRAFTIFY.
  • If the user moves the draft back to mainspace, or recreates it in mainspace, please do not re-draftify the article (although swapping it to maintain the page history may be advisable in the case of copy-paste moves). AfC is optional except for editors with a clear conflict of interest.
  • Articles that have been created in contravention of our paid-editing-requirements or written from a blatant NPOV perspective, or by authors with a clear COI might also be draftified at discretion.
  • The best tool for draftification is User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js(info). Kindly adapt the text in the dialogue-pop-up as necessary (the default can also be changed like this). Note that if you do not have the Page Mover userright, the redirect from main will be automatically tagged as CSD R2, but in some cases it might be better to make this a redirect to a different page instead.
  • The Page Mover userright can be useful for New Page Reviewers; occasionally page swapping is needed during NPR activities, and it helps avoid excessive R2 nominations which must be processed by admins. Note that the Page Mover userright has higher requirements than the NPR userright, and is generally given to users active at Requested Moves. Only reviewers who are very experienced and are also very active reviewers are likely to be granted it solely for NPP activities.
List of other useful scripts for New Page Reviewing

  • Twinkle provides a lot of the same functionality as the page curation tools, and some reviewers prefer to use the Twinkle tools for some/all tasks. It can be activated simply in the gadgets section of 'preferences'. There are also a lot of options available at the Twinkle preferences panel after you install the gadget.
  • In terms of other gadgets for NPR, HotCat is worth turning on. It allows you to easily add, remove, and change categories on a page, with name suggestions.
  • MoreMenu also adds a bunch of very useful links for diagnosing and fixing page issues.
  • User:Equazcion/ScriptInstaller.js(info): Installing scripts doesn't have to be complicated. Go to your common.js and copy importScript( 'User:Equazcion/ScriptInstaller.js' ); into an empty line, now you can install all other scripts with the click of a button from the script page! (Note you need to be at the ".js" page for the script for the install button to appear, not the information page)
  • User:TheJosh/Scripts/NewPagePatrol.js(info): Creates a scrolling new pages list at the left side of the page. You can change the number of pages shown by adding the following to the next line on your common.js page (immediately after the line importing this script): npp_num_pages=20; (Recommended 20, but you can use any number from 1 to 50).
  • User:Primefac/revdel.js(info): Is requesting revdel complicated and time consuming? This script helps simplify the process. Just have the Copyvio source URL and go to the history page and collect your diff IDs and you can drop them into the script Popups and it will create a revdel request for you.
  • User:Lourdes/PageCuration.js(info): Creates a "Page Curation" link to Special:NewPagesFeed up near your sandbox link.
  • User:Writ Keeper/Scripts/deletionFinder.js: Creates links next to the title of each page which show up if it has been previously deleted or nominated for deletion.
  • User:Evad37/rater.js(info): A fantastic tool for adding WikiProject templates to article talk pages. If you add: rater_autostartNamespaces = 0; to the next line on your common.js, the prompt will pop up automatically if a page has no Wikiproject templates on the talk page (note: this can be a bit annoying if you review redirects or dab pages commonly).

DYK for Real Fact Comics

On 20 September 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Real Fact Comics, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that science fiction writer Harlan Ellison's earliest known published work was a fan letter to the comic book Real Fact Comics? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Real Fact Comics. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Real Fact Comics), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Changes to References in Underworld Unleashed, Neron (DC Comics) and Hell (DC Comics)

Well, I tried what you did to Reign in Hell (DC Comics)in Underworld Unleashed and all I got was the usual "invoked but never defined" routine. Remember, I'm not all that computer-literate, so I guess that you'll either have to do all three of them for me, as I asked, or show me, step by step, how to do them because the instruction pages you referred me to are all Greek to me. If you could please do this, it'd be a big help! Thank you.Malcolmlucascollins (talk) 23:49, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

@Malcolmlucascollins: I'll use Underworld Unleashed as an example.
Step 1: The first occurrence of the reference currently looks like this - <ref>''Flash'' (vol. 2) #125-129 (May-September 1997)</ref>. You need to insert a name in the first tag, so it looks like this - <ref name="Flash 125">''Flash'' (vol. 2) #125-129 (May-September 1997)</ref>
Step 2: Replace the second occurrence of the reference with this: <ref name="Flash 125"/>
I hope this helps. Argento Surfer (talk) 13:36, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

I just tried it on Neron (DC Comics) and I still got the "invoked but never defined" line. Please show me what I'm doing wrong.Malcolmlucascollins (talk) 19:39, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

You skipped step one. Step one is defining the reference. Step two is invoking it. Argento Surfer (talk) 12:40, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

I've tried to define it in every way possible and I can't do it. Same thing for Hell (DC Comics). Please just do it for me. I give up. I'm about as computer-savvy as a rock.Malcolmlucascollins (talk) 17:06, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

@Malcolmlucascollins: - it's a two step process. I provided the exact code to insert and told you where to insert it. If this is too complicated, then Wikipedia may not be the right place for you. Argento Surfer (talk) 12:29, 4 September 2018 (UTC)

I wrote down exactly the way that you did this on Underworld Unleashed on a piece of paper and tried it on the Neron (DC Comics) Reference and the two Hell (DC Comics) References and still got the "invoked but never defined" line. Please just look at the articles, see how I did them and fix them if you can. This is how I wrote it down on the paper: <ref name="title number"/>.

Step one just has the name inserted, but still needs the information about the comic - <ref name="title number">Title #</ref>
Step two is only the name - <ref name="title number"/>
Only step two uses a slash (/) after the name. Argento Surfer (talk) 18:36, 6 September 2018 (UTC)

Okay, I did it like you said to do it, but now the information is in the main text and the "invoked but never defined" line is still there in the References. Do I have to add or subtract anything else? In short, how close am I to being right here as of now?Malcolmlucascollins (talk) 20:40, 8 September 2018 (UTC)

If you're getting that message, you're doing step one incorrectly. Argento Surfer (talk) 12:30, 10 September 2018 (UTC)

Additions to above message

In case you've forgotten, the changes are:

  • Underworld Unleashed - References 56 and 73 merged into 56ab
  • Neron (DC Comics) - References 6 and 7 into 6ab
  • Hell (DC Comics) - References 17 and 19 into 17ab & References 94 and 95 into 94ab.

Again, any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thank you again.Malcolmlucascollins (talk) 00:00, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

Unknown supervillains in Underworld Unleashed #1

One more thing. If you (or anyone else) could please tell me the names of these two supervillains in Underworld Unleashed #1 so that I can put them in the section "Supervillains who rejected Neron's offer", I'd really appreciate that, too.

They are:

  • Unknown supervillain on p. 30 (between Deadshot and the Cluemaster) and on p. 36, panel 1 (in the lower left hand corner and to the left of Poison Ivy),
  • Unknown supervillain colored light blue (probably in shadow) on p. 32, panel 5 (slightly above the Cheetah III).

Thanks again!Malcolmlucascollins (talk) 00:20, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

I finally figured out what I did wrong on the above subject! I had to remove the <ref> from between the ref name part and the title part. Thank you very much for your time and patience!

Now all I need to do is to identify these two supervillains and put them in the article section and I'm all set! Can you, or anyone else, please help me with this one? Thank you.Malcolmlucascollins (talk) 17:26, 10 September 2018 (UTC)

Again, I really need help with these two supervillains. If you don't know who they are, can you direct me to someone who does know? I'd really like to put them it a.s.a.p..Malcolmlucascollins (talk) 23:49, 23 September 2018 (UTC)

Is Carapax in Underworld Unleashed #1 or not?

Another question. Carapax the Indestructible Man is said in many sources to be in Underworld Unleashed #1 (I know of only one source that says he isn't-the DC Database), but if he is, where is he? I've searched pp. 30-31 from top to bottom, but can't find him. Can you (or anyone else) show me where he is in this issue? Thanks.Malcolmlucascollins (talk) 12:33, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

I'm not an expert on DC minutia. I can't help with this. Argento Surfer (talk) 12:37, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

That's okay; I just thought I'd ask. Do you know of anyone else who might know about this?Malcolmlucascollins (talk) 02:33, 12 September 2018 (UTC)

Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months.

Hello Argento Surfer, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

Backlog

As of 21 October 2018, there are 3650 unreviewed articles and the backlog now stretches back 51 days.

Community Wishlist Proposal
Project updates
  • ORES predictions are now built-in to the feed. These automatically predict the class of an article as well as whether it may be spam, vandalism, or an attack page, and can be filtered by these criteria now allowing reviewers to better target articles that they prefer to review.
  • There are now tools being tested to automatically detect copyright violations in the feed. This detector may not be accurate all the time, though, so it shouldn't be relied on 100% and will only start working on new revisions to pages, not older pages in the backlog.

RE: One shot comics

Thanks for your message. I have been actively editing / cleaning up / adding missing articles related to The Dark Tower (comics) for several days now, and my research/citations/etc. are all still underway. That did include separate articles on some companion works, as I found them of interest in regard to their independent content and cover art and planned to expand upon the various works, articles, profiles, etc. contained within.

I did not realize that some (but not all) of these had been edited to redirect pages until I began moving the content from the "related releases" sections to the independent articles (I think essentially the reverse of what you recommend), only to then find a couple of the articles missing, which in turn would have caused a redirect loop.

Further, it looks like only three of the six total companion releases were turned into redirect pages and removed from the footer template, which left three "orphaned" references therein ("End-World Almanac", "Guide to Gilead", and the "The Drawing of the Three / Revenge Sampler").

I didn't revert them out of defiance (definitely not looking for an edit war!) ... only to have access to their content (and for all six to be represented the same way) while we talked it out, since my edits across the franchise pages have been actively underway. (To be honest, at first I thought I'd made a coding error.)

Even though it was a lot of work to find and upload cover art and other info for the separate articles, I'm willing to make changes if necessary. Talk to me a little bit about your opinion regarding the notability (or lack thereof) of these companion pieces. I have not delved this deeply into a series before to run into issues with the coverage or representation of individual releases. (I do realize that notability rules are not as strict within articles vs. with separate articles, so I think I understand what you were going for but at least wanted to open a dialog about it.)

VTRAINMAN99 (talk) 18:37, 23 October 2018 (UTC)

@VTRAINMAN99: The best place to start is the General notability guideline, which lists the minimums for inclusion. Beyond that, these works fall under the more specific guidelines for books. Your most likely route to showing notability for these is criteria one:

The book has been the subject of two or more non-trivial published works appearing in sources that are independent of the book itself. This includes published works in all forms, such as newspaper articles, other books, television documentaries, bestseller lists, and reviews. This excludes media re-prints of press releases, flap copy, or other publications where the author, its publisher, agent, or other self-interested parties advertise or speak about the book.

Announcements that show a comic has been announced typically fall in the excluded category of reprinted press releases, and you're unlikely to find additional commentary in those pieces since the book isn't available when the announcement got posted. You might be able to find some reviews of these works (Marvel & The Dark Tower both have devoted followings), but I'm skeptical that they'll be from reliable sources.
I remember these comics as a whole being a pretty big deal (at least at first), but I think information for these one-shots might fit better under a larger umbrella. I'm happy to stand back and let you see what you can do, though. You might consider building an article in your sandbox first, or adding a Template:Under construction template to the top of the page to avoid other editors reverting your progress. Argento Surfer (talk) 20:17, 23 October 2018 (UTC)
@Argento Surfer: Thank you, this is exceptionally helpful. When basing my work upon or getting inspiration from others', it can be difficult to glean what is effective and what is not, and I certainly don't want to promote ineffective, cluttered, or inconsequential content. Experience-wise, I'm clearly much newer at this than you, so I appreciate the pointers ... especially, but not limited to, the Template:Under construction template. This will certainly help with instances of "But I was still working on that!", especially since this is pretty much done in my downtime. Up until a couple of years ago, I was mostly merely helping to maintain the list of hardcover/paperback collections on the main page, and my attention sort of fell off when the comics petered out (even Marvel ceased being excited about them) ... but I came back to the page recently when I learned of Gallery 13 republishing them, and in the process realized some of the linked articles had never been completed. All that is to say, I decided to start working on them again because I remain passionate about these comics and am hopeful that they may pick up steam again ... but I certainly wish to contribute in the most efficient and effective ways possible. So thank you! VTRAINMAN99 (talk) 21:06, 23 October 2018 (UTC)

Regarding Infectia

Hello, this is just a friendly notification that I have merged content from the former Infectia article into the relevant section of List of Marvel Comics characters: I per the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Infectia, since you were one of the people who participated in the aforementioned discussion. Feel free to contact me via my Talk page if you have any questions or comments about my actions. Please do not reply here, as I will not be checking this Talk page for replies. Thank you.

114.75.67.23 (talk) 15:55, 26 October 2018 (UTC)

I have noticed that you have reverted my edits to List of Marvel Comics characters: I. I understand your reasoning regarding the reversion, but as stated on the original discussion, the option for a merger was left open. I cannot see any way to effectively merge the fair amount of content that I incorporated into the list, into the Legacy Virus article, so I decided to merge the article and retarget the redirect per WP:BOLD, and it should also be noted that the deletion discussion was effectively a no consensus due to equal support for merging into both the Legacy Virus and List of Marvel Comics characters: I articles. If we cannot reach an agreement on this matter, the best course of action would be to open another discussion concerning the merger.
114.75.67.23 (talk) 16:29, 26 October 2018 (UTC)
@Premeditated Chaos:, could you please clarify your closing comment? Argento Surfer (talk) 16:42, 26 October 2018 (UTC)
@Argento Surfer: Until an agreement is reached I will revert my own retarget of the Infectia redirect to the original target, since its current format results in a redirect to a link to the exact same redirect. 114.75.67.23 (talk) 17:12, 26 October 2018 (UTC)
Sorry for the delay in response. I don't know that there's much to clarify. 3 of the 4 comments, not counting the original nominator who didn't respond to the merge suggestions, suggested Legacy Virus as an appropriate target; only 2 supported a merge to the character list, so I closed it accordingly. I don't know that merging the entire article to the character list is a good idea.
However, as an alternative option: why don't we change the redirect to target the character list, put a small amount of the content there (ie "Infectia was a mutant with the power to induce lethally unstable mutations in humans. She served as a minor adversary of the X-Force until she died of the Legacy Virus in Whatever Issue, and has made no appearances since"), with {{main|Legacy Virus}} as a hatnote? Then if there's anything (relevant) from Infectia that isn't covered at Legacy Virus, we can merge that in contextually, so that way the character list and the Legacy Virus page both have relevant information but without overwhelming either one with too much detail. ♠PMC(talk) 03:55, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
@Premeditated Chaos: Thank you for your suggestion. The alternative that you suggested was actually what I tried to do in my reverted edit, though I am not particularly familiar with the Marvel Comics series, and only have a very basic understanding of the characters and their storylines. I would suggest that my edit be restored, and then it can be trimmed to an appropriate amount of information as necessary by someone more experienced than I with Marvel Comics.

Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months.

Hello Argento Surfer,

Community Wishlist Survey – NPP needs you – Vote NOW
  • Community Wishlist Voting takes place 16 to 30 November for the Page Curation and New Pages Feed improvements, and other software requests. The NPP community is hoping for a good turnout in support of the requests to Santa for the tools we need. This is very important as we have been asking the Foundation for these upgrades for 4 years.
If this proposal does not make it into the top ten, it is likely that the tools will be given no support at all for the foreseeable future. So please put in a vote today.
We are counting on significant support not only from our own ranks, but from everyone who is concerned with maintaining a Wikipedia that is free of vandalism, promotion, flagrant financial exploitation and other pollution.
With all 650 reviewers voting for these urgently needed improvements, our requests would be unlikely to fail. See also The Signpost Special report: 'NPP: This could be heaven or this could be hell for new users – and for the reviewers', and if you are not sure what the wish list is all about, take a sneak peek at an article in this month's upcoming issue of The Signpost which unfortunately due to staff holidays and an impending US holiday will probably not be published until after voting has closed.

Don't remove stuff from Comic book pages

What's with you removing real information which too a long time to write and make, why are you deleting it? Emadjshah (talk) 00:27, 17 November 2018 (UTC)

@Emadjshah: The infobox items don't take a long time to write, and I'm pretty sure I've made my reasons clear in the edit summaries. To reiterate, the template page specifically says that employer/employee relationships should not be listed. That's why I remove Daily Bugle and Parker Industries. The infobox is also supposed to be a summary of the article. That's why I'm removing all the aliases that aren't mentioned in the article body. Argento Surfer (talk) 14:27, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

Can you offer your opinion in this discussion?

Hi. In the past you've offered your opinion in choosing photos for the Infobox. Can you offer your neutral opinion in this discussion on a related topic? It may go toward a precedent regarding captions. Thanks, and Happy Holidays. Nightscream (talk) 20:02, 23 November 2018 (UTC)

Comicsgate

This article is supposed to be reporting what CGers believe, not correcting their misconceptions. Yes, it is ignorant to think that greater diversity in comics since the 1990s is why they sell less. But CGers are ignorant, and many of them do believe that. Magic9Ball (talk) 18:27, 28 November 2018 (UTC)

@Magic9Ball: I'm unable to view the new source because of an internet filter (I'm at work). Does it specifically say sales are down since the 1990s?" If so, that's demonstrably false and needs to be refuted in the article. Argento Surfer (talk) 18:32, 28 November 2018 (UTC)
The Atlantic says sales have only been decreasing since 2015 ("Two years of plummeting print comics sales", published March 2017). Argento Surfer (talk) 18:50, 28 November 2018 (UTC)

Archie Meets the Punisher - lethality content in plot

As to your latest correction citing "well, he doesn't kill them, so it's non-lethal. "take out" is a euphemism and implies death when none actually occurs" - the content of the story, specifically the showdown at the school dance, strongly suggests otherwise. I have the comic, and can provide a scan of the corresponding pages if needed. Unless you can cite an external source which clearly confirms Punisher's attack against the mobsters as "non-lethal", I cannot concur with this statement. DanielC46 (talk) 18:48, 7 December 2018 (UTC)

@DanielC46: If it's only suggested, then to state it boldly in the summary is OR. The non-lethal claim is supported by the CBR reference in the Critical Reception [1]. I suggest you find an external source that confirms your inference. Argento Surfer (talk) 19:12, 7 December 2018 (UTC)
The quote "minus the normal lethality of Castle" is in my opinion a rather inobjective statement. While the Punisher does not kill up everyone in the story, he definetly does end up killing the mobster caterers. In the subsequent assembly of the panicked Riverdale citizens at the local police station, Miss Grundy clearly states "The caterers [the Punisher] shot [...]" - this can hardly be called a "non-lethal" intervention!
You're welcome to solicit other opinions on the article's talk page or at the WikiComic project. We seem to be at an impasse. Argento Surfer (talk) 19:28, 7 December 2018 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.16 15 December 2018

Hello Argento Surfer,

Reviewer of the Year

This year's award for the Reviewer of the Year goes to Onel5969. Around on Wikipedia since 2011, their staggering number of 26,554 reviews over the past twelve months makes them, together with an additional total of 275,285 edits, one of Wikipedia's most prolific users.

Thanks are also extended for their work to JTtheOG (15,059 reviews), Boleyn (12,760 reviews), Cwmhiraeth (9,001 reviews), Semmendinger (8,440 reviews), PRehse (8,092 reviews), Arthistorian1977 (5,306 reviews), Abishe (4,153 reviews), Barkeep49 (4,016 reviews), and Elmidae (3,615 reviews).
Cwmhiraeth, Semmendinger, Barkeep49, and Elmidae have been New Page Reviewers for less than a year — Barkeep49 for only seven months, while Boleyn, with an edit count of 250,000 since she joined Wikipedia in 2008, has been a bastion of New Page Patrol for many years.

See also the list of top 100 reviewers.

Less good news, and an appeal for some help

The backlog is now approaching 5,000, and still rising. There are around 640 holders of the NPR flag, most of whom appear to be inactive. The 10% of the reviewers who do 90% of the work could do with some support especially as some of them are now taking a well deserved break.

Really good news - NPR wins the Community Wishlist Survey 2019

At #1 position, the Community Wishlist poll closed on 3 December with a resounding success for NPP, reminding the WMF and the volunteer communities just how critical NPP is to maintaining a clean encyclopedia and the need for improved tools to do it. A big 'thank you' to everyone who supported the NPP proposals. See the results.

Training video

Due to a number of changes having been made to the feed since this three-minute video was created, we have been asked by the WMF for feedback on the video with a view to getting it brought up to date to reflect the new features of the system. Please leave your comments here, particularly mentioning how helpful you find it for new reviewers.

No hard feelings

I know this goes without saying but just to clear: despite having a minor disagreement over word usage, I highly respect your contributions to Wikipedia.--TriiipleThreat (talk) 21:45, 14 December 2018 (UTC)

@TriiipleThreat: Thanks for reaching out, and I feel the same. I'd much rather have a discussion like we did about something that's minor but real, rather than... well, some of the other discussions I've been involved in. Argento Surfer (talk) 14:17, 17 December 2018 (UTC)

Merry Christmas!

I'm wishing you a Merry Christmas, because that is what I celebrate. If you don't like Christmas or just don't celebrate it in any of its forms, then please accept a generic "Happy Holidays". If you celebrate no holidays at this time of year, then hopefully you will be satisfied with an even more generic "Season's Greetings".  :) BOZ (talk) 15:26, 22 December 2018 (UTC)

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. Welcome to the 2019 WikiCup!

Hello and Happy New Year!

Welcome to the 2019 WikiCup, the competition begins today. If you have already joined, your submission page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and we will set up your submissions page. One important rule to remember is that only content on which you have completed significant work during 2019, and which you have nominated this year, is eligible for points in the competition, the judges will be checking! Any questions should be directed to one of the judges, or left on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will make it to round 2. Good luck! The judges for the WikiCup are Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email), Godot13 (talk · contribs · email), Vanamonde93 (talk · contribs · email) and Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email). re Human Top (Bruce Bravelle)

I was thinking about a conversation with User:Jhenderson777, although actually I might have gotten that mixed up with a different conversation, about Red Raven... Anyway, I'm not sure about "zero editors supporting" since I am not zero editors last I checked.

Anyway, fine, let's have a proper RfC and sort this out, I think that'd be most satisfactory for all... with your blessing, I'd like to restore the article just for now so that editors can view it more easily, for the purpose of thinking about the issue. Alright? Herostratus (talk) 21:58, 13 February 2019 (UTC)

@Herostratus: I looked into it some more after restoring, and it looks like it was discussed in three different locations. I had only reviewed the one at List of Marvel Comics characters: H when I reverted you. I'm fine with restoration for an RfC. Argento Surfer (talk) 22:26, 13 February 2019 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for February 23

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Farmhand (comics), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Exposition (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Question about recent AfD closures

Hello, and apologies for the random message. I have noticed that some of the AfDs on fictional characters have been closed with a decision to merge the content even though there appears to be more of a consensus for a deletion. Here are some examples: John Carik, Luke Carlyle, Living Diamond, and Tiboro. All of these AfDs were closed by the same user (MBisanz). I was curious about your opinion as you have participated in each of the AfDs mentioned above? I just found the decision to merge rather than delete or keep the AfD open for further input to a little odd. For each of the AfDs, there appeared to be only one or two votes for a merge against multiple delete votes. I hope you are having a wonderful start to your weekend! Aoba47 (talk) 19:48, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

They're certainly counter intuitive. I don't think the votes for merge put forth much of an argument aside from identifying potential targets, and the closing comments don't explain why he went against the majority of opinions. Argento Surfer (talk) 21:21, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.17

Hello Argento Surfer,

News
Discussions of interest
  • Two elements of CSD G6 have been split into their own criteria: R4 for redirects in the "File:" namespace with the same name as a file or redirect at Wikimedia Commons (Discussion), and G14 for disambiguation pages which disambiguate zero pages, or have "(disambiguation)" in the title but disambiguate a single page (Discussion).
  • {{db-blankdraft}} was merged into G13 (Discussion)
  • A discussion recently closed with no consensus on whether to create a subject-specific notability guideline for theatrical plays.
  • There is an ongoing discussion on a proposal to create subject-specific notability guidelines for chemicals and organism taxa.
Reminders
  • NPR is not a binary keep / delete process. In many cases a redirect may be appropriate. The deletion policy and its associated guideline clearly emphasise that not all unsuitable articles must be deleted. Redirects are not contentious. See a classic example of the templates to use. More templates are listed at the R template index. Reviewers who are not aware, do please take this into consideration before PROD, CSD, and especially AfD because not even all admins are aware of such policies, and many NAC do not have a full knowledge of them.
NPP Tools Report
  • Superlinks – allows you to check an article's history, logs, talk page, NPP flowchart (on unpatrolled pages) and more without navigating away from the article itself.
  • copyvio-check – automatically checks the copyvio percentage of new pages in the background and displays this info with a link to the report in the 'info' panel of the Page curation toolbar.
  • The NPP flowchart now has clickable hyperlinks.
