British English edit

Please don't remove the definite article in British English, it is needed. While not having it is considered fine in other variants, or in journalese or casual use, it is correct in formal BrEng. Thank you. - SchroCat (talk) 17:53, 7 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Well, best of luck clunking-up the vast horde of BrEng articles "incorrectly" written without it. Magic9Ball (talk) 01:27, 9 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Vandalism edit

Hey, I think you should calm down with the vandalism. nobody's yelling "VANDALISM!" except for you. Just because somebody edits something doesn't mean you should revert back to your edit. stop it. 2001:569:79A0:D00:211F:8A0E:6D06:760 (talk) 08:09, 15 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

When someone is blocked by an administrator, any editing they do is vandalism. Magic9Ball (talk) 19:15, 15 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Blocked or not. i don't care. calling people vandal, troll etc makes you kind of a troll.. You may not know but you're vandalizing pages as well.. 2001:569:79A0:D00:C008:FBD2:3E3D:BCE7 (talk) 20:43, 15 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

The fact that you don't care about how to behave is why you were blocked, and why you will continue to be blocked. And every single thing you've accused me of doing is something you did (and did it first). If you really believed that these things were wrong, you wouldn't do them yourself. Nope you talking to a different person. seeing you revert 200 times on 1 page that's pretty much edit warring 2001:569:79A0:D00:C008:FBD2:3E3D:BCE7 (talk) 21:06, 15 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

regarding change to JT LeRoy lede edit

Hello Magic9Ball,

I'm writing to request that you revise an edit that you made last year. In your addition to the lede of the JT LeRoy page, the persona is described as "HIV-positive," which really is not accurate. There are those who have claimed it to be true for their own personal reasons, but when called upon to support this claim with any statement – verbal or written – by JT LeRoy or Laura Albert, all serious research into that literary event has yielded the same results: None of the articles or interviews by or directly citing JT LeRoy say that he is HIV+. It was not part of the public persona, which is what the lede is supposed to introduce.

On the JT LeRoy Talk page, Section 35 was a very thorough attempt to try to document HIV+ status with JT LeRoy – made by someone who was eventually banished from the page. It was this issue that prompted the Section Break and caused the page to be put under Extended Confirmed protection. You of course quite rightly posted about the lede on that Talk page, but no one bothered to respond. I've retired from Wikipedia, but when I saw the revision of the lede and read your thoughtful Talk post about it – and then looked at your contributions and saw that you do a wide range of good serious work without grinding an ax – I thought I should just contact you directly about fixing it.

Thank you for your consideration, Magic9Ball -- I do hope All Signs Point To Yes!

Several reliable sources [1][2][3][4] indicate that HIV was part of the "JT" persona, at least for a time. One of them quotes Savannah Knoop on it. We don't also need a transcript of Albert or "JT" saying it; that's an unrealistic burden of proof. Magic9Ball (talk) 13:47, 21 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

HEAT edit

You reference HEAT and Hal Jordan on the Comicsgate page. This is going to sound weird, but HEAT's a topic I've been trying to learn more about for over a year. I've seen several modern sources refer to it, but it's always in a condescending manner devoid of context or detail. Even contemporary sources like Wizard mock it without explanation.

Do you happen to know more about it, or know of a place where I can learn more? Argento Surfer (talk) 14:54, 27 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

I dabbled in online comics forums in the early 1990s, so in a sense I was "there" for HEAT. I didn't get actively involved in the letter-writing, taking out protest ads, et cetera, but I didn't like the grim-n-gritty trend that the "Emerald Twilight" storyline was part of, and I liked the Hal Jordan character as he was, so I was sympathetic. The HEAT party line was that DC didn't care about its long-time fans, and were trying to attract younger fans (who were buying Spawn and WildCATS... the stuff that Wizard loved), even if it meant destroying their characters, so they fired Gerard Jones because he refused to toe the line, and hired Ron Marz as a scab do it instead. (Sound like anything you've heard recently?) I "boycotted" GL... which is to say that I hadn't been buying it before, but I continued not-buying it when Marz took over, then I bought several issues after Marz left, several years later. It was naïve and self-centered, and I grew out of it. It was based on the assumption that fans are entitled to be part of the writing process, and as customers they are inherently right. Never mind that they weren't buying the book in large enough numbers to prevent it from being cancelled, which is what the Hal-goes-crazy stunt and a new character were intended to change. I also remember an aspiring artist/"writer" in those days named Ethan, who was trying to get people to buy a book called Cyberfrog. I don't know if he was a card-carrying member of HEAT, but between his role in returning Hal Jordan to his Silver-Age form and him still parroting the same rhetoric today, I wouldn't be surprised. HEAT was basically Comicsgate but without the right-wing socio-politics. I don't recall Kyle Rayner's ethnicity being an issue (probably because he was written as "white" not "half-latino"), and obviously his gender and orientation weren't a problem. HEAT also didn't have the robust internet we have today, accessible to anyone who can use a phone, which has empowered CG to do so much more than just complain. Political correctness gone mad? edit

I appreciate that it is not exactly the same thing but would you read Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2019 June 9#Category:Political correctness and tell me why the same argument doesn't apply to CG? --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 20:45, 13 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

I should clarify that I have been going through the articles in category:Criticism of political correctness and more than half clearly were categorised thus on an editor whim rather than any objective measure. Comicsgate just came up next on the list. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 20:51, 13 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
