Simon Sainsbury edit

OK? Got a better picture? I see you are into art ... do you know where we could find a pic of one of his pieces of art? Cheers Victuallers 17:06, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

Try here (only the pre-1930 paintings in the bequest) or here. It might be a better 'hook' for DYK if you mention Nichola Serota's quote about the importance of the gift to the Tate, or that Sainsbury was descended from the founder of the supermarket chain. Good work on the article by the way; I left a lot of gaps which you've filled nicely. Ham 18:51, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

Nicolaes Witsen edit

Hello Vic, would this article be good enough for a DYK, see Nicolaes Witsen. -- Taksen (talk) 16:50, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

The invitation is an interesting subject, I am getting closer to whom were in power in Amsterdam at that time. I need to find a book that describes the invasion from a Dutch point of view. Jonathan Israel is good and reliable. Do you know his book on the Dutch Republic?

Not all the Amsterdam burgomasters agreed to support William III and the money involved in preparing a fleet caused a financial crisis on the Amsterdam stock market in 1688, a subject which interests me: see Coenraad van Beuningen. It had also to do with Louis XIV, kicking out all the Hugenots in 1685, dyk? By the way may we can meet in that pub on one of my next bike tours. Taksen (talk) 12:56, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

Re-assess of IA page edit

Hello, can I please request a re-assessment of the International Academy page? I mainly ask this because I have added references to everything and I also am working to delete references that go nowhere (that, unfortunately, some user keeps re-adding). I think it's now above "Start" class (especially if you go through our history and look at how the page used to look - look back to 2005ish and see how it's improved).
In addition, I think it should be ranked at a higher level of importance since, although the page doesn't say this, the school is the first publicly-funded school in North America to be all-IB diploma. It is also considered as the premier center for IB learning in Michigan.
I also am concerned because you cited as part of your start-class assessment of the International Academy page that we haven't linked our notable alumni. The school is only 11 years old. Therefore, we do not yet have any notable alumni, as our oldest graduates are about 25-26 years old. I don't think that a lack of alumni should be a mark against such a young school.
Thanks for considering my request. I would re-assess it now that I am a member of WikiProject:Schools but since I am a new member I don't feel qualified to re-assess it, and as one of the primary contributors to the page I feel like I am too biased a party to give a fair assessment. Regards, Beggarsbanquet (talk) 01:42, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

Lachine massacre edit

Hey Victuallers! I haven't found any images for the Lachine massacre page yet, but I have some ideas. Also, while there are first-hand accounts of "roasting children" (it's difficult just writing that!), I'm not sure actual remains were recovered indicating signs of butchery. Therefore, it may be necessary to change the language on the DYK. I'm going to dig deeper into some new sources to confirm the cannibalization reports. Thanks for your help! Kindest regards, AlphaEta 17:25, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

  • Perhaps a more general question would suffice. Something like, DYK:
"...that the Lachine massacre, in which Iroquois warriors destroyed a small New France settlement on Montreal Island, was instigated by English forces in New York following the declaration of King William's War?"
Let me know what you think. Kindest regards, AlphaEta 18:49, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
  • I agree with your assessment, and think we should stick with the newly-written DYK located above. Multiple first-hand accounts of cannibalism were recorded, but, as mentioned in the article, they were given by New France colonists or survivors of the attack, so there's bound to be some bias in their description of events. I'm going to dig around to see if any physical evidence of cannibalism was recorded. Thanks again for your help, AlphaEta 20:14, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

DYK nomination edit

OK? Victuallers (talk) 17:03, 24 November 2007 (UTC) ps: Why are you not using the "references/" tag? Is your approach preferred or are you unaware of this bit of wiki?

Victuallers: Tried to highlight relevant cross-references, but it's hard to catch them all. Regarding these 2 topics: Chinese languages was highlighted in first paragraph of Ernest B. Price article so don't think it's necessary here; wasn't aware that Japanese troops would hit reference so that's good addition. Am still learning wiki-rules.--Orygun (talk) 23:36, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

...hmm maybe I'm taking your knowledge for granted. DYK stands for "Did you lnow". On the bottom left of the main wikipedia page is the DYK section. Your excellent article will be advertised there with the "hook" above in next 2-3 days. I hope I'm not teaching you the obvious... and you are finding my assistance helpful rather than annoying Victuallers (talk) 16:25, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

Victuallers: Have ~30 days experience as wikipedian--so still have lot to learn about wiki-universe. DNK ("Did Not Know") about DYK section, but it was very nice to have article highlighted there--thanks for nomination and DYK info.--Orygun (talk) 01:18, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

Question on Project Tags edit

You slapped a WP Texas tag on Archbishop Curley-Notre Dame High School. However, the school is in Miami, Florida. Why did you give it a WP Texas tag? Horologium t-c 03:50, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

You also added a WP Alabama tag on Saint Andrew's School (Boca Raton, Florida), which is obviously not in Alabama. What gives? Horologium t-c 03:53, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

What are you talking about edit

What picuters are you talking about. if you are talking about the references they are from plaques that were at the site and are copyrite free. All the other picture are mine, i took them myself and the references do confirm what is there. Cheers_Ad@m.J.W.C. (talk) 19:12, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

Christ Church, Macclesfield edit

Many thanks for nominating Christ Church, Macclesfield for DYK. It is part of a series I am writing on the important churches in Cheshire and this church has a particularly interesting history. Best wishes. Peter I. Vardy (talk) 09:30, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

David Simpson (priest) was a new article created on 27 November but I am not sure it is long enough for DYK or whether there as a different/interesting hook. Charles Roe was expanded on 28th and contains plenty of potential hooks but the degree of expansion is not, I think, sufficient to qualify for DYK. Many thanks for your support. Peter I. Thanks for the nomination, and also for the advice on the other article. I'll see what I can do and will let you know when I'm finished (a one-paragraph article probably won't warrant 8 animations and several other images :), but I should be able to make it easier to visualize an adatom with a nice pic). Runningamok19 (talk) 15:25, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

I agree the imagemap application helps out a lot. How do you go about placing the tags over the image? Trial-and-error? I can probably just look it up in the help section, but I assume the tags are something like [shape, x, y, r, text]. Does it change with varied image size? Runningamok19 (talk) 21:35, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

There is a simple but fine app that allows you to quickly do the placing. I have stored details I think in the source as a hidden comment. Else try this tool

I'll take that as a yes and move the image map in then Victuallers (talk) 21:42, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. I just expanded the lead paragraph but am not sure if it meets GA status yet. What say you? If you have any thoughts as to what else I can add, let me know. Any stylistic comments...well then you can make the edit! Runningamok19 (talk) 22:35, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

Bob Glidden image edit

I used an image of Alan Kulwicki's car in his infobox. When I did an RfC peer review for the article to prepare it for a GA run, people commented that he was not a car! Isn't that funny! That's why I didn't put the image of Glidden's car in his infobox. I found a flickr contributor who has changed the license on a photograph of him working on a car, so I'll be added that image to his infobox right away. Royalbroil 14:44, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Yea, it's crazy. I put a second picture up of him working on a car. He became a crew chief after he retired. I asked 3 flickr people to consider changing their license. 2 have already changed! One of them is a major drag racing fan who has pictures of drag racing from the 1960s to 1990s. He's willing to license the photos to allow use on Wikipedia since he's a big fan of Wikipedia!
He has at least 23 of the National Hot Rod Association Top 50 Drivers, 1951-2000. What about the legality of that article? Can that list be made into an article, or is it true that the list cannot be included? It shows the relative notability of drag racers. Where could I ask to have the concept of the article reviewed for legality? I looked through the copyright policy articles, and I don't think that anything is clearly stated either way. Royalbroil 16:01, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
Check out the article history: It was deleted as copyvio. If it's not legal, then all redlinks to the article need to be removed. Royalbroil 16:02, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, I assumed that you were an admin and so you could review it's deletion history. I have stated in words why it was delete. It's nice to be confused for an admin, eh? Royalbroil 16:10, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Admin? edit

I was reviewed your contributions in response to the last exchange. You have very many DYK articles, plenty of AfD discussion, hundreds of images uploaded, and enough edits to satisfy anyone who is edit counting. You are being mistaken for an admin. Would you like me to nominate you to run for adminship? Your help updating DYK would help the project significantly. Royalbroil 16:35, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

You lost me on your first sentence. Anyhow, you can find out about the process here: Wikipedia:Requests for adminship. This guide Wikipedia:Guide to requests for adminship is important to read. Here's the basics: I would nominate you. There is a set of preprogrammed questions that you have to answer. Honesty is the best policy. Contributors are allowed to ask you optional question that I recommend that you answer. Contributors give their assessment of you and your attitude/demeanor. After 7 days the nomination gets closed.
You might consider a Request for Comment Wikipedia:Editor review first to make sure that you are not ambushed. You should also consider watching and reviewing the current nominees to see what types of optional questions they are being asked. Note that usually you don't respond to most criticisms because then it turns into a bitchfest that kills the nominee. So you know, I would bring up in my nomination that you were accidentally autoblocked for one minute and provide the diff so that it doesn't look like you are hiding anything. It was an accident, and I'm sure it won't matter. Having over 100 DYK is a HUGE thing that will help you immensely. Royalbroil 17:15, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
I reread your message, and I get your first sentence now. Take your time to think about my proposal and to study the process. There's no rush. Most of the DYK updaters comment on the RfA nominees, at least they did on mine. Let me know if and when you want to go forward. I noticed that you wanted to become an admin, so I thought that I would ask. Royalbroil 19:57, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

LAHS Article edit

Hi. You once assessed the Los Alamos High School article. I do a lot of maintenance on that article. It's been under disrepair so I could understand why you might have called it "start" rather than "B" (although I encourage you to check out the latest revision), but I really don't get why Albuquerque Academy is rated with "Mid" importance while Los Alamos is "Low". What's the justification behind this distinction? Both are good high schools in the southwest. IMO Los Alamos's history is more interesting than academy. -- Ryan Utt (talk) 19:52, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

sample nom edit

(oh, I see you have few WP:AIV edits but that's ok, you can't be on the computer 24 hours a day)

Victuallers is a fine editor whom I am nominating for administrator. He's been contributing since October 2006 and has amassed about 12,000 edits, over 5400 in mainspace. He's contributed to namespace, template talk, user talk pages, and other types of pages making him a well rounded individual. Like me, he listens to BBC Radio 4 (or at least I did when I lived near Calais in France). He's made many fine edits (over 100) to La Martiniere Lucknow and many to Claude Martin, who endowed the school in the 1700's. He has created many articles and helped recognise others by nominating their article for DYK. He has never been blocked aside from a less than one minute interval which the blocking admin noted was a mistake. He works with others cooperatively as demonstrated by his receiving many barnstars. He also has numerous medals and awards, almost as many as a foreign dictator, except he is well behaved. He has mentioned on his user page that he is interested in being an administrator. This candour is advantageous because it suggests he will be honest and forthright with the community instead of having a secret agenda. Having such goals should be seen as a commitment to Wikipedia. Let's give Victuallers the Wikipedia administrator's globe to put at the top right hand corner of his user page and the mop to keep Wikipedia's floors clean! A victualler is a person who people seek for shelter. Wikipedia needs a victualler and what better person than Victuallers? Mrs.EasterBunny (talk) 22:45, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

DYK 25 recognition edit

I wanted to thank you for the recognition. I was sure that I was in the 20s, but I had no idea that I had already hit 25. I have truly found DYK to be a fun and enjoyable way to approach editing that helps publicize new and interesting articles. Not unlike writing newspaper headlines, writing a good hook for a new article is a challenge in its own right. One of my recent DYK creations was for an article about Antonio Jacobsen. I was searching through The New York Times for a source about James E. Buttersworth and saw that Jacobsen had lived in the same New Jersey city and was mentioned in the same article, but had no Wikipedia article. DYK gave me a great reason to create a decent article and to let people know about it. Thanks for the recognition and for all of your own contributions to DYK in particular, and Wikipedia in general. ...that although the UK government committed itself ten years ago to removing partial selection from schools, there are still a substantial number of partially selective schools in England?

HMS Bonadventure (1650) @ DYK edit

I asked Wizardman about your missing hook, and he replied:

From T:DYK/N: My prose count was 1478 characters, which falls just short of the 1500-char requirement, which is the reason I originally removed it. I'll leave it to the discretion of whoever adds the hooks next whether or not being 98.5% of the way to 1500b is acceptable. Wizardman 22:42, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

I think it's back on DYKNU now. Hope this helps. --PFHLai (talk) 23:21, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Glad to hear that the article now has more than 1500 characters. Good to go for DYK. Goodnight! --PFHLai (talk) 23:55, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/Victuallers Here it is a day or so early. Either sit on it for a while or answer the questions and transclude it. Mrs.EasterBunny (talk) 22:42, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

You might find it helpful for reverting any vandalism you discover and can act as a stepping stone for adminship. I have reviewed your contributions and I see no evidence that you will abuse it, so as permitted, I will give it to you informally if you agree here or on my talk page. RFA edit

copies from my talk page:

I read through it and I like it. My only comment is that it is pretty informal compared to most, not that being fairly informal is a necessarily bad thing. I would like to co-nominate you, Victuallers. I suggest waiting until your real life problems get resolved (if these are the type of problems where waiting would make sense), so that these problems don't interfere with your RFA. It's stressful to put yourself out there, allowing people to throw stones at you. Royalbroil 16:25, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
Informal is ok. The message is more important than the tone. Do get your life problems resolved first. Waiting a few days or weeks doesn't matter. It's not like you have a train to catch. Mrs.EasterBunny (talk) 20:27, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
I already added my co-nomination. You might have to catch a train, though (LOL)! Royalbroil 21:34, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

Ok, I'm off of the phone. It was the highlight of my Wikipedia editing career. I just talked with Eddie Hill about minor changes and adding images to his article!
Here's the guide to the little that remains for your RFA to be active Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/nominate section. You need to change the start time, then you need to transclude the template. I'm sure that you'll do very well. Royalbroil 16:16, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
I laughed so hard that I just about fell to the floor! I added the picture of Taylor Swift in a white dress. Maybe I should call her (LOL)! I keep watching to see when you're going to add your nomination. Do you anticipate doing it soon (next few minutes or hours)? Royalbroil 17:16, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the compliment. However, I don't do images in Wikipedia, as it's very difficult to get them approved as fair use, in my experience when having a look at the process. If you do, I'm sure that fair use would be more proveable, as he is not a living person and new originals cannot be taken of him! Best wishes and good luck. DYK on a Waffle edit

Thanks again for the recent updates. I addition to writing hooks for my new articles, I have truly enjoyed rummaging through the list of bot-detected new articles and writing hooks for articles that deserve the additional attention they get from appearing on the main page. Thanks to you for all of your contributions and for the janitorial responsibilities of selecting and posting DYK items. Alansohn (talk) 16:31, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

Your welcome Alan .... although it is a number of peoplw who make DYK work .... you can select other peoples hooks for next update... admins are requireed only to do the copy to the main page you joust need to make sure the hooks and articles are ok by dyk and wiki rules. Nomming is good as it thrills editors who think no one has read their article Victuallers (talk) 16:40, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
I had started rummaging through the bot-listed articles and I was amazed at how many really good articles are being created for which a truly-worthwhile to read hook could be written. It astounds me how many have made it through to the DYK box on the main page. I still make a mistake now and then, but now that I think that I understand the rules, I check the article size, make sure that the hook is reliably sourced, verify the length of the hook and add it in, with very few errors detected by your fellow DYK crew. Thanks again! Alansohn (talk) 16:50, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

Question about Victoriatown edit

I have done a major overhaul of the above article. I'm wondering if you could take a look at it, and see if I've expanded it enough to qualify for a 19 January nomination as an expansion at DYK? -- Bellwether BC 04:06, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

  • I can't do it until much later today (early tomorrow UTC), as I have a birthday thing for my nephew (five years old today!) that will last all day. If you have time to work on it, that would be great, but if not, I'll take a look when I get home this evening. Thanks, and best regards, -- Bellwether BC 13:58, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
  • Why did you remove the book cover image? I think that the fact that an award-winning novel was set in Goose Village is important, and the book cover is used in the "In popular culture" section to illustrate the importance of the book being set in the village. -- Bellwether BC 03:43, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
  • While I don't necessarily agree with the article being too "image heavy", in retrospect, I can see how the book cover might make it feel a bit cluttered. As for the bus driver information, it's included in the "history" section, is referenced, and illuminates the human past of the town. This was my reasoning in putting it in the article. Were you just feeling like it felt dropped in or something? I don't think it's absolutely essential for the article, but I like the information in the article for the "human past" reason I mentioned above. Can you think of maybe a better place to include it in the article? -- Bellwether BC 15:51, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

Sydney Girls High School references edit

Hi there. I agree that we should make articles look as good as possible, but unreferenced and refimprove tags aren't intended only to inform readers that there are not any/enough references. Adding these tags to an article adds that page to a category showing that it needs additional references, and it helps other users to know which articles need work on references. For more details, see here, here or here. For now, I'll put the refimprove tag back on the article. Feel free to contact me on my talk page. Cheers, Cdlw93 (talk) 21:46, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

Salisbury Cathedral School edit

I haven't got time to work on this one at the moment but it is a newly created article on a very old and interesting school and a prime candidate for DYK if some more content and a few references could be found. DYK edit

Sure, First you have to download the image onto wikipedia. I am doing that just now. Woody (talk) 12:28, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

Yep basically. What I did was, save the file to my computer, copy the licensing info from commons and then upload it to exactly the same file name. I then add {{C-uploaded}} to it. Then you are ready to go. Woody (talk) 12:32, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

Thx. OK I looked at the image you loaded and its protection. Do you just copy it onto the template?

How do you mean? Now that it is on wikipedia, it is protected due to the cascading protection. The template is just added to the summary. In terms of the DYK template, you simply copy the next update over onto the main DYK template. Then you have to update the Template:Did you know/Next update/Time. All done now Woody (talk) 12:39, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
Not much more, just blank the next update with a clean version from Template:Did you know/Next update/Clear. Then all you have to do is give out the credits and you are done. Woody (talk) 12:44, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
No problem, (and remember to blank the credit list when you have finshed. ;) If you have any more questions, just ask! Woody (talk) 12:55, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
I wasn't around at that time. It was fairly early in the morning here & I was catching up on sleep after doing a marathon 51 hour trivia contest this past weekend. I'm glad to see that Woody showed you the process! Royalbroil 14:36, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

Hello Victuallers. No, I wouldn't call myself an "Imagemap Fan" - I just needed to use it for the archives (on the top of my talk page near the TOC). Also, do you get one of those DYK awards if you expanded (a good amount) of an article that was then featured on DYK the next day? - Milk's Favorite Cookie 20:02, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

Hmm.. I guess I could call myself an Imagemap fan. Why do you ask?   jj137 (talk) 20:39, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
Actually, no, I don't have a gallery (although I probably could/should create one). I'm not sure what you mean by protecting the code with a template, though.   jj137 (talk) 20:50, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, I'm still confused by what you mean.   jj137 (talk) 22:12, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
OK, I see what you mean now. As for protection, I'm not sure; if it starts to receive vandalism/non-constructive edits, we probably could protect it, but I think it's fine for now. About imagemaps: honestly, I'm not that good at making them that I could make one like that; I know how, but I keep making mistakes. The most recent one I can think of is an extremely simple one [2] (obviously not even much, but it's the first one I thought of).   jj137 (talk) 22:31, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

Confused (Dukes of Normandy) edit

Victuallers, thanks for your note, which has prompted me to look at the numbering of the articles we have on Dukes Robert of Normandy... Our article Robert II, Duke of Normandy is plainly about the Duke usually called Robert I, or Robert the Devil, or Robert the Magnificent, and not about the Duke usually called Robert II of Normandy, who is his grandson and has an article at Robert Curthose. In the lead of that article, Robert Curthose is introduced as Robert II. We can see why he is sailing under the name of Curthose. I tried to move Robert II, Duke of Normandy to Robert I, Duke of Normandy, but it can't be done except by an Admin, perhaps because there's already a page at Robert I, Duke of Normandy, which redirects to Rollo of Normandy. At Rollo of Normandy we read that some sources call him Robert, but so far as I'm aware he isn't known as Robert I, Duke of Normandy. I'll copy this note to Clio, who may be able to say if I'm missing something before we ask you to Do Something. regards, Xn4 01:06, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

Yes, you are quite right, Xn4, there is some confusion here. I have never come across any source that refers to Rollo as Robert. Besides, it is uncertain if he was ever known by the title of Duke of Normandy. Robert the Magnificent, father of William the Conqueror, is thus generally recognised as Robert I, which makes Robert Curthose, or Courte-Heuse, his grandson, the second duke of that name. In fact you will find them with the proper numerical identity if you look at the genealogy on the page for Robert the Magnificent, and at the list on the Wikipedia page on the Dukes of Normandy. I was under the impression that title changes could be made by any editor? Anyway, I'm copying this note to your talk page and that of Victuallers. Best wishes to you both. Clio the Muse (talk) 23:10, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, Clio.
Victuallers, I don't entirely understand why I need to trouble an Admin for these moves, but -
  1. would you please consider moving Robert II, Duke of Normandy to Robert I, Duke of Normandy?
  2. That move will create a new redirect page called Robert II, Duke of Normandy, redirecting to Robert I, Duke of Normandy, but could Robert Curthose please be moved to Robert II, Duke of Normandy, nevertheless?
  3. Robert the Magnificent should then be redirected to Robert I, Duke of Normandy instead of to Robert II, Duke of Normandy
Many thanks. Xn4 01:28, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
I was able to sort this out, with some redirecting of redirects before I tried again to move the articles which wouldn't move. In the event, I've moved the article on Robert I to Robert the Magnificent, with a redirect to there from Robert I, Duke of Normandy, and I've left Robert II at Robert Curthose, with Robert II, Duke of Normandy redirecting to him. I've also done some consequential tidying up of wikilinks and redirects. Xn4 12:31, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

That's what the source says, and I had no reason to second guess it. The US often leads the world in this kind of trend in any case, so I think there's a good chance it's correct. I figured that since you'd obviously spent a great deal of time putting the imagemap together (and it's something I'd like to see us use more), you wanted to try it out on the Main Page. Although at first I was afraid it would skew the formatting (initial previews showed everything going into a narrow column), it looks like it worked out OK. Victuallers, what happened here? This is such an obvious overturn, how did you come to delete this article? Mangojuicetalk 13:19, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
Ok. I see you're a relatively new admin. Take this as a learning experience, then. WP:CSD#A7 applies only to articles that don't even make any claim to significance or importance, and that don't have clear evidence of notability. It's best to avoid deleting any marginal cases, and especially don't delete ones that are sourced under A7, because sourcing presumably asserts that the subject meets WP:N. Don't worry about it, though, we all make mistakes and have to learn the ropes one way or another. Mangojuicetalk 19:09, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Clicky maps edit

Hi Victuallers, I was wondering how you do the clicky maps? Is there a help page somewhere on the technique? I was thinking it would be nifty to add clickiness to the range map at a recent featured article on which I worked, Sumatran Rhinoceros. Each of the little red spots is a different national park, and I was hoping if one dragged their mouse over the park it would identify which one it was. Is that possible and, if so, can you show me how it's done? Thanks greatly! --JayHenry (talk) 01:22, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

DYK Help... edit

Hi Victuallers,

Any chance I can finally have a go at this DYK? Perhaps I could do Tramcars of the National Tramway Museum instead?

In theory, all I have to do is make it 5(?) times bigger than it is - presumably this can be done with Tramcar notes, as well as further explanations about Tramcars in general?

Oh and well done on the DYK - I forgot to vote... :$!

Oh and i returned after solving the dispute! :D!

Thanks,

BG7 17:29, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

copied from my talk page!
Cheers Vic!
I'll copy it into the same box the other DYK is in - Box 4. Please let me know how i'm doing!
Does it matter if all (or most of) the refs go to the same place? (The guidebook/British Trams Online/LCCTT/Official Site)?
More pics will follow - I have one of nearly every tram!
So the text should be the intro and then the bits about the cars? How big is a factor of five would you say?
Thanks,
BG7 19:29, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
Since writing that i've added some more info, and a lot of refs! Please let me know how i'm doing!

Encore Computer speedy - please restore edit

Hi, Looking for info on Encore Computer today, I was surprised to discover that there wasn't an article -- it had been recently speedied for non-notability. This is surprising because the company is definitely notable; on the other hand, not surprising since, looking at the cached article on Google, no one had ever bothered to add references...

Anyhow, I'd like to go ahead and edit the article to establish notability; would you be able to restore it to bring back the edit trail and such?

As a notability placeholder for now, please see:

I'll of course get this or similar info more formally wrapped into the article once it's back up, but this should be enough to at least move it from "speedy" to AfD consideration. Thanks, NapoliRoma (talk) 22:20, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

What do you think? I'm watching your talk page, so you can respond here. Royalbroil 05:04, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

So what do you think? Feel free to turn me down if you don't plan to work on any GA/FA articles. Royalbroil 12:38, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

The article is Alan Kulwicki, and I want to propose GA. Would you start of list on the article's talk page of things that should be added to make things clearer to a non-American who's not a racing fan? Especially background things like explaining, say, the 1970s stock car scene in America. Let me know which article to review or save the credit for future use. Thanks! I'm curious if you were planning on continuing the peer review. Your peer review so far has been extremely helpful and is appreciated. Royalbroil 22:20, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi there, I was wondering why my Shiv Chowrasia nomination was withdrawn by you in the Next Update? Thanks, Mspraveen (talk) 11:45, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi there Victuallers, there was nothing wrong with Mspraveen's hook, I approved it myself. I think you misread the text on the suggestions page, Mspraveen just withdrew one hook when he realized an article on the topic already existed, but then he just copied his new content onto the existing article and got a x5 expansion. So I believe his hook was legitimate. Gatoclass (talk) 13:20, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

Sparrenburg Castle DYK edit

Hello and thank you for the nomination of the Sparrenburg Castle article. I have to mention that I am just the translator of the German article. Another important thing is that–as I understand–the right name for the castle is either "Sparrenburg" or "Sparrenberg Castle" because "Burg" already means "castle" and the hill on which it is situated has the name "Sparrenberg". Maybe we should move it to the right name first. Kind regards, Tirkfltalk 08:03, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

I moved it to Sparrenberg Castle and already changed the two articles linking to the redirect page. If the translation is considered to be okay I don't have a problem with featuring it at the DYK. Kind regards, Tirkfltalk 08:42, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

Secondary education in the Borough of Halton edit

Glad you like this way of dealing with schools which are not necessarily "notable", yet (in my opinion) still have a place in Wikipedia, and especially as part of the Wikipedia:WikiProject Cheshire. I was "driven" to this by the addition of a "should be merged with Runcorn" tag attached to one school (which is not a good idea). It took a bit of time but I am quite pleased with the outcome and it may be a sensible model for dealing with schools in other areas. If any particular school is "notable", a separate article could be written about it with a {{main}} tag in the general article. Thanks for adding the links to the redirect pages. I had sort of thought about doing this but had not got round to it. I'm intrigued though why the titles on the Categories page should be in italics - presumably to show that this will take you through a redirect page. Peter I. Vardy (talk) 12:58, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

Various NTM Tramcar Stuff... edit

Hi Victuallers...

I will be at Crich on Sunday - are there any pics that you can think we might need (I dunno, one of the depot perhaps?)

Also, could possible alternative hooks be some things from the "trivia" section (it will be gone SOON!!! I've reffed one more part, which I will incorporate 2moz... (about London 1622!). Blackpool 166, Prague 180 and Jo'berg 60 should be the next ones up!)? For example: Of all the Tramcars of the National Tramway Museum, Prague 180 has had more press coverage than the rest put together!?

Thanks,

BG7 20:52, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

I think a different hook is probably preferential - there are actually on 13 operational tramcars, as Leeds 180 was withdrawn with electrical problems yesterday. It needs a body lift and a complete rebuild of the resistance box - a big job, and there isn't space for a body lift at the moment in the workshop!
No worries about pics! I'll upload those I have to commons later on. Online hook... I guess that means it has to be on a site. If it came from a guidebook, and I copy it to my site, does that count?
Thanks,

Mystery edit

Hi. Any thoughts on this oddity which seems to be a problem with a whole lot of artists? For an example, at François de Troy, on the left of my screen, I can see eight interwiki links, two of them apparently to the French Wikipedia. The last three of the eight (including one French) are real, can be found embedded in the text of the article and lead to real articles elsewhere, but the first five (including the other French) are ghosts which lead only to templates. It's much the same at another article I recently started, Alexis Simon Belle. I can't find anything to show what's causing this ghosting, but the problem seems to be something to do with other wikipedias whith have interwiki links from Template:Infobox Artist. ... Solved!!! Victuallers (talk) 20:21, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

All's well today, your changes clearly did fix the problem, so many thanks! The culprit is SashatoBot. At this edit, the bot added interwikis to Template:Infobox Artist outside the <noinclude> tags, causing ghost interwiki links on all pages which used the template, as discussed above and here. And the links were already included in the template's documentation. On the bot's User Page, I see the message "Administrators: if this bot is malfunctioning or causing harm, please block it. Would you please consider doing that, until its owner, Sasa Stefanovic, has got it under better control? Thanks again. Xn4 16:00, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

Also, could you be a really nice admin and close it? (As a merge/redirect!).

Thanks,

Gregory XIII edit

Hi!

Thnx for the nomination of my article Papal conclave, 1572. However, the note about first canonized Pope since Celestine V does not refer to Gregory XIII himself, but to Pius V, whom Gregory XIII succeded in the papal chair. I think that Gregory XIII is the best known because of the Gregorian Calendar. Best regards! CarlosPn (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 09:18, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

DYK – Rodger Wylde edit

Hi, the above article has so far been overlooked for DYK. Any chance of getting it in the next update before the nom expires? I don't want to move it across myself as the nomintor, but it's a nice article and well referenced, so should pass the criteria easily. Cheers, Dan1980 (talk | stalk) 20:37, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for adding this to the next update. I have slightly expanded the hook again as the shortened hook was inaccurate. It's still shorter than the original hook though, and well under 200 characters. Dan1980 (talk | stalk) 22:27, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
The Stockport player is important because it is his broken leg that was being treated by Rodger as the club physio. The two spent a lot of time together and ended up deciding to form a band. I think that it's important that this part is left in as it adds to the "interestingness" of the hook (in my opinion anyway). Dan1980 (talk | stalk) 22:39, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, I only just got your message about adding the other hooks. I was doing a major expansion of an article and didn't get the new message box for some reason. I would normally have put the other hooks in to the template, but I didn't want to get sidetracked from the major edit that I was in the middle of. Dan1980 (talk | stalk) 23:44, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

1917 Pinar del Río hurricane edit

Hello. I noticed that a portion of the article has been featured in the "Did you know?" department. Unfortunately, it incorrectly states that the cyclone was 949 mbar at landfall in Cuba. The minimum pressure of 928 mbar (27.42 inHg) was the actual reading in Cuba. I clarified that fact in the article. The 949 mbar reading is estimated for the Florida landfall. Can you correct 949 mbar to 928 mbar in the DYK? Thanks! CVW (Talk) 21:44, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

Brunswick High School edit

You said:

Your school article is a very good start. Refs are good - there are some nice facts. I'd like to propose this for the front page. Is there any chance it could gain about 1000 characters of text about its history and a picture or two in the next 3 days?

I would love to add more, but unfortunately this isn't a good week time-wise. I plan to make a trip through Frederick County in the near future and get pictures of the high schools, but I cannot promise a date. Sorry. But thanks for the recognition. Drakelow edit

A tag has been placed on Drakelow, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the article and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. James Bert Garner DYK hook edit

Your nomination for him struck me hard that James Garner invented the gasmask?. There's a famous American actor named James Garner, which you inadvertently hit, and it caused me to laugh. It caused me to think about using the hook and especially the image for the April Fool's DYK! Would you object with saving the DYK nom for 1 April, and then spicing it up a lot? Americans would really appreciate knowing that a famous actor sent two of his associates into chlorine gas filled room, especially with a picture to prove it! Royalbroil 02:41, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

I have moved your suggestion there (to Wikipedia:April Fool's Main Page/Did You Know) and struck it from the current DYK suggestions. I would appreciate your help there: we need some more noms by April Fool's Day.
A bigger concern is the Featured Article because that takes lots of time. Last year someone came forward with a rushed FA starting on March 25th, so anything's possible. All FA only get featured once, so one needs to be done before that day. There aren't any good nominees at this time, although I just suggested a spoof using the delisted GA Garbage (band). Discussion is found at Wikipedia:April Fool's Main Page/Featured Article. There are 2 or 3 appropriate Featured Pictures to decide from, so that is not a concern.
GA nominations normally take several weeks, so the Alan Kulwicki article is holding for now. I'll like you to wait with finishing your review until after GA review has been completed. Royalbroil 02:07, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

--—Dark (talk) 10:22, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

You mean Clem Rutter's notification was missed?
Hmm, had to go back through the history to see what happened. What happened is that basically DarkFalls did all the notifications, but he didn't clear the page and I wanted to start the next update. So I clicked through a selection of the links to ensure he'd done them all, and as he'd done every link I looked at, top, middle, and bottom of both the article and the creator/nominator columns, I assumed he must have done the lot and I cleared the page. But I guess he must have overlooked one, so my methodology of logical selective checking was foiled :/ Gatoclass (talk) 16:39, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

on DYK edit

Yup, I doubt we'll find 24. Even if the updates are 8 hours apart I don't think we have 18-20. I'll try to find an Irish-born baseball player to expand, but virtually all of them are pre-1900, making sources hard to find. I'll try though since we could use some more. Vic, didn't you read my edit summaries? I hadn't finished organizing that update. I just finished, and I turned around to find you posted it ten minutes ago! Gatoclass (talk) 16:54, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I'd really appreciate that if you'd repost the updated version. There are not too many hooks on my monitor, the last one fits perfectly, but I'll leave that up to you whether you want to include it or not, I thought it was a nice quirky one to finish off with. Gatoclass (talk) 17:07, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

All done :) Gatoclass (talk) 15:44, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
Just before I go, I can see a couple of minor tweaks might be in order. The last hook contains the word "actually" which is superfluous. You might want to remove that. The second last also says "showed openly" when it probably should be "openly showed" for grammatical correctness. Anyhow I'll leave it up to you if you want to fix them or not. Gatoclass (talk) 15:50, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

DYK Image edit

Did you upload and protect the image? I don't see {{C-uploaded}}. --BorgQueen (talk) 16:16, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

What happened is that you uploaded it with the default extension, which is .jpg . The actual extension should have been (capital) .JPG . Luckily no one vandalized the image on Commons. I took care of it. I always click on the image before loading (in the "Next Update") to make sure that the capitalization issue doesn't come up. Luckily Victuallers page is on my watchlist. Royalbroil 17:43, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
I would appreciate it if you would watch my back too! I am not perfect either. Besides some DYK updates (although I did 4 or 5 straight DYK updates on Christmas) I occasionally do some speedy deletes that are real bad (attack, zero notability, and ones with no content or context). I tend more inclusionist, so I pass over most speedy nominations and remove some nominations that I think don't meet speedy criteria. I found an awesome source for the 50 best drag racers in the U.S. and I'm able to write B-class type articles just from that source! (I do add other sources of course.) Big name drag racers had tiny stub articles, and many had none. I'm also been working on getting the Alan Kulwicki article up to GA level. The completion of your review will be appreciated after it is a GA. Many people have already reviewed it, so I'll propose it for FA after you look at it, as long as there aren't any major concerns raised by you or the GA reviewer. Actually I didn't finish editing them, because Daniel Case happened along and posted the lot while I was still fiddling around with them. Hey, I really like the idea of the "red flag"! Kind of like the "under construction" tag for article pages. Yeah, I think we really need that.
