Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. GA Sweeps invitation

This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.

If any members are interested, please visit the GA sweeps page for further details and instructions in initiating a review. If you'd like to join the process, please add your name to the running total page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles from the worklist or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. With ~1,300 articles left to review, we would appreciate any editors that could contribute in helping to uphold the quality of GAs. Cyrillic edittools

Hello everyone. I am currently updating some of the functions in the edit window here in Wikipedia. Below the edit window we have a list of Cyrillic characters, so it should be easier to insert them in articles. That list is currently not complete, so I would need some help from some editors than can read and write Cyrillic. See MediaWiki talk:Edittools#Cyrillic (2).

Oh, and please don't start a discussion about the edittools here on this page, instead come to that page.

After a recent request, I added WikiProject Azerbaijan to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. Azerbaijan articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Azerbaijan articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. This ({{Administrative divisions of Azerbaijan}}) looks lovely. This ({{Neftchala Rayon}}), eh, not so much. I appreciate that that's the local orthography and I do appreciate your work expanding info about the region. On the other hand, remember that this is the English wikipedia—specifically, that we should be using WP:ENGLISH WP:COMMONNAMEs and avoiding WP:LOCALCONSENSUS. The common English name of Khazar/Xazar is not Xəzər; Arabkardashbeyli isn't generally known as Ərəbqardaşbəyli. The main articles like Neftchala do it right – English title and namespace, Azerbaijani immediately after in the lede – but remember to keep it up for the smaller places as well. — LlywelynII 07:15, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

Category:Imperial Russian people by occupation

There is currently an attempt to merge Category:Imperial Russian people by occupation to Category:Russian people by occupation. Since what is today Azerbaijan was under the control of the Russian Empire for nearly a century, this has the potential to effect many articles related to what is today Azerbaijan.John Pack Lambert (talk) 00:22, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

Feedback request: VisualEditor special character inserter

The developers are working towards offering mw:VisualEditor to all users at about 50 Wikipedias that have complex language requirements, such as Azerbaijani. Many editors at these Wikipedias depend on being able to insert special characters to be able to write articles.

Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. Non-translated alt-text on az wikipedia

I didn't know where else to mention this. On the Wikipedia for the Azerbaijani language under the "Alətlər sandığı" menu there's an item called "Bu məqaləyə istinad et". The alt-text for this is in English/not Azeri (it says "Information on how to cite this page"). It looks to be a translation oversight. Azeri vs. Azerbaijani

Help an outsider out—what's the difference? I might guess that Azeri refers to the ethnic group and Azerbaijani to the country, but then there's Azerbaijani people. Azerbaijani seems more common, but I'm really not sure. --BDD (talk) 04:26, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

Translation help

Sorry if I am posting this at the wrong place. Anyway, there is an English language article Free Fall (2013 film) which has a FA version at the Azeri Wiki - Sərbəst eniş (film, 2013). I have no knowledge of the Azerbaijani language and thus struggling to translate the article. Would anyone from this project be able to help translate and turn an average article into a featured one? Perhaps some of you speak/read Azerbaijani, in which case you may be able to find out more. Forbes suggests he is a Russian citizen, however. New Task Force on Women in Azerbaijan

Hi all

I am coordinating a group of editors, through edit-a-thon projects, to build out pages on Women in Azerbaijan - issues affecting women, but mainly building out profiles on historically significant Azerbaijani women and journals like Sharg Qadini. I have a group interested in getting involved.

Is anyone able to give me advice on how to set up a sub-task force? It makes sense to include that here rather than create a whole new WikiProject.

Transliteration

Are there any conventions for transliteration from Azerbaijani to English?

It should be mostly straightforward and the same as in the Azerbaijani Latin, except Ə, which is too far from the western Latin alphabet. But Ç, Ğ, İ, ı, Ö, Ş, and Ü are used in Turkish and can be used in Azerbaijani, too.

Ə can be either Ä or maybe E or A, although I'm not sure which one to choose. There were fierce discussions about this at Talk:Ilham Aliyev/Archive 1, and while there is an essential consensus about this particular name (Aliyev, rather than Äliyev or Əliyev), I couldn't find a general rule that would apply to all Azerbaijani names, neither for Ə, nor for the other letters. In particular, Ğ is very inconsistent now: The English Wikipedia has Qarğalıq, Nakhchivan, Agsu District, and Agstafa District, and they all should be spelled with ğ: Qarğalıq, Ağsu, Ağstafa.

I'd suggest Ä for Ə because it's consistent, and allowing exceptions for names that already have a common English spelling, which is already the English Wikipedia practice for all names. I'd also suggest retaining C, because that's the usual practice for Turkish, even though it may be unintuitive.

Some books indeed use original spelling of Azerbaijani names, see [1] (totally conserved), [2] (partially conserved: Ə, Ç, Ş are replaced by Ä, Ch, Sh). But Azerbaijani authorities tend to use Azerbaijani-to-English orthographic transcription, see a biometric passport and a (the official?) Baku Metro map. That is: C becomes J, Q becomes G, X becomes Kh, Ə becomes A, Ç becomes Ch, Ğ becomes Gh, İ and ı become I, Ö becomes O, Ş becomes Sh, and Ü becomes U. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

yes, it is the books of Mamadali Huseynov. the excavations were done in the cave by archeoplogist M.Huseynov in 1960 and called Azykh. Here is the official document but in Russian "AZERBAIJAN SSR

Could you, please, read once more the Article and see the sources? there are 2 sources with different name only. and what does "the most scientific studies says that the cave is Azokh" mean? We discuss about the Name of Cave only, not about archeology. Discovery was done in 1960 and all soviet documents show the name of Cave Azykh, not only one source. The another source with Azokh name is new edited. And the is no difference for all these new specialists if the cave is Azokh or Azykh. The name is was fixed from the discovery time since 1960 as Azykh cave and Azykh Man or Azykhantrop was named by the cave sure. these arguments are not enough? As I know Wikipedia is Encyclopedy is not research center, but only facts. Several thousand articles exist for purported places in Azerbaijan that were mass-created in a problematic way from GEOnet. We have had similar problems with Iran articles (see earlier on the same noticeboard) and California articles (see Wikipedia:Reliability of GNIS data and Wikipedia:WikiProject California/GNIS cleanup task force) and have quite a number of areas not even tackled yet (e.g. "Corner" articles in the U.S. state of Virginia that were probably once the sites of marker trees for land surveys, that Wikipedia is declaring to be human communities). A discussion of which articles we do not trust to be fundamentally accurate in the context that they give to readers/editors, and whether and what to mass-delete, is on-going on the Administrators' main noticeboard. 5 pogroms in Maştağa?

Village stubs

A large number of Azerbaijani village stubs were created this year, for example Yanşaqbinə, Qılınclı, Lachin, Qarazeynallı, Qasımbinəsi and Qaraşlar. Unfortunately most of them look like they've been abandoned or destroyed presumably during Armenian occupation. Since we've had issues with single-source stubs in the past, I wanted to get some input on whether these would meet the WP:GEOLAND notability guideline which requires either legal recognition or significant coverage to meet GNG. dlthewave, the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Azerbaijan released video coverages in 2020-2021 from most of these villages after their liberation. In addition, they are all legally recognized settlements by the government which are reflected in the official administrative division directory prepared in 2019 and published in 2020. Should the villages and towns formerly in the Armenian-occupied territories surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh (that were returned to Azerbaijani control in 2020) have an Armenian translation in the lead?

Option 1. Prior to the First Nagorno-Karabakh War, 0.4% of the population of the Armenian-occupied districts surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh were Armenians, whereas Azerbaijanis made up 98% of the population. In the Armenian occupation of the districts, throughout 1994-2020 small numbers of Armenians from abroad were settled in formerly Azerbaijani settlements. To name an example, during the occupation about 500 Armenians were settled in the city Zangilan (previously had an exclusively Azerbaijani population of 7,200). Despite the Armenian settlers only replacing 7% of the pre-war population of Zangilan, the lead of the city's article contains an Armenian translation. With examples such as these, it's evident that Armenian translations in the formerly occupied settlements' articles are given UNDUE weight and should instead remain in the history section rather than the lead. — Golden ^{call me maybe?} 13:18, 2 September 2022 (UTC)

Something noteworthy is that, after extensive discussion between the two sides, the community in the Russian Wikipedia (which likely has the largest Armenian-Azerbaijani Wikipedia community outside of their own respective Wikis) came to a consensus about how the leads of these settlement articles should be displayed over a year ago. This example can be used to help establish a consensus on the English Wikipedia as well. Comment Applying a sweeping vague “consensus” to a broad area that includes a diversity of settlements, each with their own histories and unique circumstances, serves injustice to the purpose of Wikipedia. There are settlements in this area where there would be WP:UNDUE weight given to an Armenian name, and there are settlements where an Armenian name in the lede is absolutely appropriate. For example, the village of Zar (Tsar) was a major and historically important Armenian settlement since at least the 11th century, and because of this the Armenian name of Tsar is much more prevalent in historical sources than the recent Azerbaijani name of Zar, which itself comes from the Armenian name. In addition, the Armenian name of Tsar was used for the past 30 years, as the village was under de-facto Armenian administration and had an exclusively Armenian population. Also using the 1979 census to describe the original population demographics of the region is dishonest, that was after a decades long effort by the Azerbaijani SSR to inflate the Azerbaijani population and deflate the Armenian population of the region, for example settlements like Jabrayil had an Armenian plurality in 1897 and Minkend had an Armenian majority for a significant amount of its modern history. And a majority of the historical settlements in the region had Armenian majorities for centuries before they were depopulated in the 18th century. Places like Husulu and Mirik were important centers of the Armenian Melikdom of Kashatagh and the historical name of Husulu, Kashataghk, is where the name of the entire area comes from as it was the capital of the principality, their Armenian names have centuries of mention in historical sources. As you can see, each settlement has unique circumstances and it is not beneficial to lump them all together under one consensus, this issue should be discussed in each individual talk page of the articles, but if we must, Option 2, the settlements that have Armenian names in the lede, were administered by de-facto ethnic Armenian administration for the past 30 years and had significant Armenian populations that used that name for 3 decades up until recently. Reliable sources from that period almost always use both names, with the Armenian name in parentheses next to the Azerbaijani name. For example, Zangilan (Kovsakan) had an exclusively Armenian population of 500 before the 2020 war, and Kalbajar (Karvachar) had an exclusively Armenian population of 600 before the 2020 war, Karvachar is also a historical name that has been used to describe the original Armenian settlement for centuries before and recorded in reliable sources. Most of the 1979 population of these region were emigrants from different parts of Azerbaijan anyway, so I don’t see why people who have been living here for the past years as citizens of the towns shouldn’t count. The only purpose this RFC would serve is the avoidance of proper discussion on a case by case basis, which is absolutely needed in such a controversial area, that is under arbitration.

Also, per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names), “Relevant foreign language names (one used by at least 10% of sources in the English language or that is used by a group of people which used to inhabit this geographical place) are permitted.” All of the settlements that have Armenian alternative names had exclusively Armenian populations for the last 30 years, as well as, historical Armenian populations. MOS:LEADALT makes it clear that historical names can be used as an alternative name in the lead, which most of these names are. TagaworShah (talk) 22:03, 22 September 2022 (UTC)

Option 1. No, the translation should instead be provided in the History/Etymology section. According to WP:OTHERNAMES and MOS:LEADALT, once "Names" or "Etymology" paragraphs are introduced, the alternative English or foreign names should not be relocated back to the first sentence. An exemption, retaining a local official name differing from a generally recognized English name in the lead, is not applicable in this case. Armenian names for the regions surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh are not used locally nor officially. For the last 100-200 years, the Armenian population in these locations was less than 1%. Following the occupation of the territories by Armenian forces, the Azerbaijani population was expelled, and the majority of villages/cities were left unpopulated, with a small number of Armenians settling in some of them and leaving when Azerbaijan reclaimed those territories.

The argument that the names should be kept in the lead because the region was populated by Armenians many decades ago does not make any sense. Using the same rationale, we may add Azerbaijani names to lead of the majority of places in Armenia, because Azerbaijanis were recently deported and most of the names were altered by the Armenian government. Futhermore, this comment by Golden shows that these names are less than 10% of the sources, which add to the arguments as to why these names shouldn't be in lead. If however you were not mistaken, could you please provide a source which supports the assertion that the Azerbaijan SSR (AzSSR) attempted to "inflate the Azerbaijani population" in the areas surrounding the NKAO (these areas have been predominantly Azerbaijani or Kurdish for centuries prior to the establishment of the AzSSR). A source for the claim: "the majority of the population of these region were emigrants" in 1979 is also needed. Since you have brought up the 1897 census as a basis for deciding whether a translation in the lead is necessary, would you be opposed to applying the same logic for Vedi (Azeri-majority until mid-20th century) or any of the multitude of formerly Azeri settlements in modern Armenia?

Having a historical significance to another nation doesn't warrant their translation in the lead. Zar, for instance, does indeed have historical Armenian significance, and the History section can and does effectively display this. However, the village has been inhabited by Azerbaijanis for at least the past two centuries as indicated by Russian Empire and Soviet censuses. Similarly to this case, Wikipedia does not list the Greek translation for the city of Istanbul in the lead, despite the fact that it has a significant Greek historical presence but has been primarily populated by Turks for several centuries now. Villages with Armenian majorities or significant minorities in the previous century (that is, before the First Nagorno-Karabakh war) can certainly receive an exception, but going back several centuries to justify such a change is not only unfair, but also inconsistent. — Golden ^{call me maybe?} 08:35, 13 September 2022 (UTC)

Hi, I only mentioned settlements outside of the former NKAO, so I don’t see how i’ve confused that with the 7 formerly occupied regions? As for the source, i’d be happy to provide it, this source here [4] describes this process of reducing the Armenian population by each settlement and the emigration of Azerbaijanis to the region and this source[5] speaks generally of the Heydar Aliyev policies to increase the Azerbaijani population of Karabakh, which Ilham Aliyev confirms here applied to Karabakh in general [6]. These are just the sources I gathered right now on a limited time frame, but please let me know if you’d desire further detail, there were Armenian villages in that area that were depopulated before the 1960s during the Azerbaijani SSR which you can observe in the first source; not saying there wasn’t an Azerbaijani/Kurdish majority from before then, but there definitely was a way more significant Armenian population in that region before 1979, that’s all i’m getting at. Vedi and any settlement in Armenia or Turkey is not comparable, those settlements were not administered under Azerbaijani or Greek names for the past 30 years, Constantinople is purely a historical name, not even Greeks used it in modern times that’s why, Tsar is a name that is both historical and has been used in modern times by the village’s inhabitants, same with Karvachar or Kovsakan, they are significant in sources that speak about both historical and modern times, because these names were the de-facto names for these settlements from 1991-2020. It is not comparable, and I stand by in my original comment that all of this should be discussed individually, each settlement is different, some were ghost towns like Agdam and never had a significant Armenian population and some like Lachin (Berdzor) have had a significant Armenian populations for the majority of its existence and had Armenians living in it as recently as this year. With due respect, Karapetyan is not objective. He is a researcher based in Yerevan whose work has never been published by a reputable publisher. Your sources all refer to Nagorno-Karabakh (Aliyev's use of "Karabakh" also refers to Nagorno-Karabakh in this instance, which is clear from the context). I'd still like to see a more thorough source that supports your claim that there were any laws or initiatives made with the express purpose of altering the demographics of any area outside the NKAO (not a general "Karabakh", but with names of districts). The fact that the number of Armenians decreased does not necessarily imply that there was a deliberate effort to do so.

What do names and population have to do with control? There are more than a hundred settlements in Armenia where Azerbaijanis predominated until their expulsion in 1987–1989. The word "Tsar" is a historical designation. For at least the last two centuries, the name of the village has been "Zar" in official records. The mere fact that settlers were moved there and the village's historic name was resurrected by an unrecognised government does not imply that it has since become "modern" again.

Moreover, neither Kovsakan nor Karvachar are "significant in sources". In fact, Kovsakan accounts for only ~2% of all sources discussing the city (Kovsakan: 1,650, Zangilan: 69,400), while Karvachar accounts for ~5% (Karvachar: 18,700, Kalbajar: 361,000), both of which fall below the 10% threshold WP:NCGN#Alternative names requires.

There are more than 500 settlements in the region formerly under the control of the Republic of Artsakh. The contentious environment of this topic area and all of its discussions makes it practically impossible to have a discussion on each individual one, and even if we could, it would take months of palaver to change even the smallest detail. Most of these cases would be resolved with a general agreement in this area, however, any particular cases that differ significantly from the others could be examined and discussed separately (such as settlements which had significant Armenian populations in modernity, not including those settled-and-departed within the last 30 years). — Golden ^{call me maybe?} 11:33, 13 September 2022 (UTC)

The thing is the majority of settlements in the formerly occupied district already don’t use the Armenian name in the lead, the only ones that do are those that have had either a significant Armenian presence historically and/or were Armenian settlements with an exclusively Armenian population for the past 30 years. It’s really only a few settlements that include the Armenian name in the lead, not even Jabrayil which actually did have a significant Armenian population in early modern times has the Armenian translation in the lead. It’s really only a matter of a few villages in the Lachin and Kalbajar districts, Kalbajar and Zangilan as far as i’m aware. I don’t see why they can’t be discussed in their individual talk pages, as this region has a had a very diverse and tumultuous history so each settlements outcome will be different. I also don’t agree that the historical names were “resurrected,” in some cases like Kovsakan, that is correct since Kovsakan was just the county it was located in within historical Armenia. But places like Tsar and Karvachar, have always been called by their historical names by Armenians. These names were used by virtually all the people living in these villages for the past 30 years. As for Armenia, far as I understand, you did embark on a project to add Azerbaijani names to formerly Azerbaijani villages in Armenia. Karapetyan is a reliable source that has been published by reliable academic publications in his home country, I don’t see why the Armenian national academy of sciences wouldn’t be reliable. All in all, we really are only dealing with a handful of diverse villages that each have their own considerations in place, the vast majority of the settlements already don’t have the Armenian name in the lead, that’s why this should be reserved for the individual talk pages. • @Abrvagl: Hi, I believe you may have confused some wikipedia guidelines. MOS:LEADALT states that if there are 3 or more alternative names then they should be moved to the etymology section to avoid clutter, however, most of the settlements discussed just have the Armenian and Azerbaijani names, and a lot don’t have proper etymology sections, like Zangilan doesn’t even mention its present-day Armenian or Azerbaijani name in the section, since there’s nothing significant to be mentioned about them with the sources present so they would be left in the lead. This is the case for a lot of settlements in the region which is why we can’t make sweeping decisions like this for such a diverse region. In addition, Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names) states that “Relevant foreign language names (one used by at least 10% of sources in the English language or that is used by a group of people which used to inhabit this geographical place) are permitted.” Which all of the settlements that have Armenian names in the leads had Armenian populations both exclusively in the last 30 years and historically. Settlements left to ghost towns do not have the Armenian name in the lead. And most of the Armenian names are historical, which is permitted to be in the lead as an alt name by MOS:LEADALT. Cheers. There are a multitude of issues, that would normally preclude an advancement to B-class, but the title thus timeline is very questionable among other issues. Economic Region rename

Hi folks - There's a stub category "Category:Ganja-Qazakh Economic Region geography stubs" (a parent category, so no stub template applies) which appears to refer to a region that has been reorganized since 2021. I believe that it should be re-named to Category:Ganja-Dashkasan Economic Region geography stubs, as that is the current name of the reorganized region. (See Ganja-Dashkasan Economic Region for confirmation.) As your knowledge of Azerbaijan is undoubtedly more comprehensive than mine, I thought I'd leave it to you/your project to propose the change rather than do it myself. Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments are used by Wikipedia editors to rate the quality of articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project decides to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present.
