Wikipedia:Requests for history merge

This page is used for listing requests for history merges or history splitting of pages. For relatively simple cases where history merge is required, the destination page should be tagged with the {{history merge}} template. This page should be used for requesting very complex merges, merges involving more than two pages, history merges of deleted pages, or when the use of the template is otherwise inadequate or where its usage would cause problems.

This page was originally for listing cut-and-paste moves which could not be repaired due to a then-extant technical limitation. The limitation has since been removed, but this page is still available if you find a cut-and-paste move, and are not able to repair it yourself (there is a procedure for doing it, but only administrators can do it, and it is a bit tricky!).

Administrators need to read Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Fixing cut-and-paste moves and Wikipedia:Requested moves/Closing instructions.

The procedure edit

  • If the issue is clear-cut (straight-forward cut-and-paste move(s) to a different title), place a {{history merge|NAME OF PAGE THE ARTICLE WAS CUT FROM}} template at the new location of the article which has been moved through cut and pasting, i.e. on the article where the pasting was done. This will place the request in Category:Candidates for history merging to be reviewed.
  • In more complex cases (explained at Wikipedia:How to fix cut-and-paste moves), please leave a description of the problem under the "Repair requests" section. An administrator will look over the pages and perform whatever tasks are necessary and update the request.
  • Tasks that have been completed or do not need further discussion will be removed.

Hi, asking for a merge of Draft:List of Apex Legends characters into List of Apex Legends characters. Finally getting around to using the sourcing I found almost a year ago. Am not working on the draft because the mainspace target was created after, so wouldn't be able to eventually move it to that target. Have placed the sources on the draft page on the mainspace target's talk page. Thank you for the help. Soulbust (talk) 19:28, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not done. You are the only editor of the draft, so if you copy your content into the main article there will be no attribution issues, and thus no need for a histmerge. Primefac (talk) 19:35, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Primefac: Ah I was thinking this could be done to preserve my edit history on the draft, since I expect/believe the draft will eventually be deleted since drafts get put at risk of auto-deletion after 6 months of no edits. Seems to be no point to editing the draft, as I'm just looking at the sources I placed on the talk page and using those to edit the mainspace article now.
If that's not doable, I understand. Soulbust (talk) 19:43, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you want to preserve the history, you can always move it to a subpage in your userspace. Primefac (talk) 19:47, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah I see. In my opinion that seems a tad disjointed since I think it'd be a little more straight-forward for it all to be on one page's edit history. But yeah, if the histmerge can't occur, I'll get around to doing that alternative option sometime soonish. Soulbust (talk) 20:01, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
