Why is this user awesome?

  • User:The Earwig is awesome for a lot of reasons. He is active in the Articles for creation project writing bots to help the process along, wrote the bot which maintains the Dispute resolution noticeboard, and is currently working on a tool that helps editors find copyvios faster and easier. All-around, Earwig is a great editor and an awesome Wikipedian. Legoktm (talk) 20:52, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

In both her role as a community volunteer and her new role, Moonriddengirl has tirelessly worked to fix serious problems that no one else will, and to mentor people who have struggled to become positive contributors, while maintaining a superhuman level of patience and friendliness. Why is this user awesome?

There are just innumerable reasons.

MS has been active helping out with many things on Wikipedia. For merely one example, he helped with the divergent structure of our category system back when it was mostly a gaggle of threads/chains. Doing many mass group nominations to help bring some sense of consistency of naming and structure in categories.

He is so humble, too often thinking that what he does is not as important as what others' do.

And is consistently and constantly a "go to" person for other editors.

As a "help out" person, I think we could all look to him for example.

Why is this user awesome?
Yes, I realise that this nomination may cause some fireworks. However, for all the faults that are ascribed to him by some, Malleus Fatuorum has been and remains a prolific and knowledgeable contributor whose work here spans a huge range of our content and is rarely ill-informed. His work in fettling FAs and GAs must surely rank with the best and his accommodation and encouragement of new users - including the oft-maligned student programs - is self-evident on his (voluminous) talk page. His copyediting is absolutely outstanding, as is his continued presence and work to the Greater Good, despite occasional doubts and in the face of what is fundamentally little more than a systemic culture clash. No one, not even his detractors, can deny that this man has been a substantial asset to the real purpose of Wikipedia, which is the building of an encyclopaedia that is accessible to all. Would he wear a t-shirt? Well, I'm not so sure that it would be his style - but he deserves one even if he just frames the thing. (And I assume that, being US-centric, there will be a suitable size. Joke.) I rather suspect that this may be one of those issues where the WMF has to intervene and make a decision because I can hears the howls of protest from the regular Us vs. MF camps already. If this is how it has to be then it is how it has to be. I do know that Malleus was overcome with emotion when he attended a Wikimeet early on this year and realised, as previously he had not, that he was accepted by those whom he met for what he was: a highly productive Wikipedian of enormous integrity who has a genuine desire to make this project as good as it can be. For those who disagree with his methods, let's just admit that there is method, based on much consideration of the greater good, in what they consider to be his madness. - Sitush (talk) 01:09, 16 November 2012 (UTC)

*There are times when I think blocking Malleus and throwing away the key would be a good idea. But then I come to the realization that Malleus, as this nomination said, truly does strive to improve the encyclopedia and do what he thinks his best. I don't always agree with his methods, but he is one of the most resilient Wikipedians on the project, and for that, he deserves a shirt. Go Phightins! 01:54, 16 November 2012 (UTC) This tells me there's no reason to waste a t-shirt for this purpose. I don't dispute that Malleus is dedicated and resilient, but there's no reason to give him a t-shirt solely so he can burn it. Go Phightins! 02:25, 16 November 2012 (UTC) Changed my mind again. He goes out of his way to help others, and to return the same respect given to him, even when he disagrees. And if he thinks that the best use of the t-shirt upon receiving it would be to burn it, because that would make Wikipedia better, well, then, I'm inclined to let him have it. Malleus has never refused my requests for help and advice, and his responses have always been honest, productive and valuable. A most worthy recipient of a probably unwanted gift, but it's the thought and accolade that counts. Graham Colm (talk) 22:43, 23 November 2012 (UTC)

  • Possibly not the most appropriate bit of merchandise for him. Never met him in real life and may have got this wrong, but I'd have thought an engraved tankard would be more his style. But whatever the physical object is I'm sure he deserves it. ϢereSpielChequers 23:12, 25 November 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for your support, but an engraved tankard would be just about the most inappropriate gift I could imagine. I've never been one for a pint of foaming best ale with mine host down at Ye Olde Pork and Scratchings. Think instead of 16 pints of Stella with the Gallagher brothers of Oasis. Not that I've ever done that of course, but it's far more likely than me even owning an engraved tankard. Sorry to disappoint. Malleus Fatuorum 00:03, 27 November 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the clarification, I shall adjust my mental image of you appropriately. Perhaps what is generally needed is for the WMF gift to be a choice for the recipient to make. Including something fire resistant for yourself. Some would choose a Tshirt, others an engraved glass, sandals with [citation needed] in the tread or having a star named after them. I appreciate it is looking a gift horse in the mouth, but on a global project it seems odd for such a gift program to be so culture specific. ϢereSpielChequers 14:18, 2 December 2012 (UTC)

So what? Are the contributions of banned users considered to be of no value once they've been banned? Malleus Fatuorum 02:37, 17 November 2012 (UTC)
A banned user can be worthy of a shirt regardless of his current Wikipedia status. I agree with Malleus Faturoum (talk · contribs), that banned user's contributions still have value even if they are blocked. But it would seem to be very unlikely that a now-banned user makes wonderful edits, because then the user would probably not be blocked most likely other than certain situations. TBrandley 02:42, 17 November 2012 (UTC)
I was only pointing it out for those who are interested. Also, giving them a t-shirt that says "I edit Wikipedia" doesn't make much sense. They don't edit Wikipedia anymore, do they? AutomaticStrikeout 02:43, 17 November 2012 (UTC)

I suggest you take off those rose-tinted spectacles TBrandley, making "wonderful edits" is no protection at all against being blocked. I have no idea whether Thekohser made "wonderful edits" or not, I simply don't see why the contributions of blocked editors ought not, in principle, entitle them to a "posthumously" awarded T-shirt. In fact I can think of at least one other indefinitely blocked user who deserves a T-shirt for his many fine contributions to literature articles. Malleus Fatuorum 03:03, 17 November 2012 (UTC)
Yes, I have never reviewed this user's contributions either or ever spoke to him/her. I was just claiming why would a wonderful user be blocked, but I do also know of good blocked editors. TBrandley 03:13, 17 November 2012 (UTC)
(edit conflict)I'd still like to know why we should encourage a banned editor to wear a t-shirt that says "I edit Wikipedia" when they're banned? If they're banned, we don't want them editing Wikipedia. Giving them the t-shirt sends a very conflicting message. AutomaticStrikeout 03:14, 17 November 2012 (UTC)
We don't want to send conflicting messages, as I'm sure User:Jayen466 will agree. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 03:37, 17 November 2012 (UTC)
Only one of the designs on offer says "I edit Wikipedia". Malleus Fatuorum 03:41, 17 November 2012 (UTC)

  • Oppose - There is a difference between being blocked, and being banned. If the community has chosen to ban, then no. - jc37 03:47, 17 November 2012 (UTC)

By deleting List of pedophiles, Coren took decisive "ignore all rules" action to quickly address what was sure to become a BLP nightmare and troll magnet. Coren's deletion prevented what might have been a divisive and drawn-out deletion discussion. Coren's acknowledgement of the effects that Wikipedia articles and lists can have on BLP subjects deserves recognition.

I would like to add a proviso to this nomiation - in the event that Dr. Blofeld returns from "retirement" and successfully manages to have the article restored through a deletion review, Coren must give the shirt to Blofeld. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 17:12, 17 November 2012 (UTC)

For his "tough, but fair" approach to substandard articles in AfC, AfD, and elsewhere. He is not easily fooled by unreliable sources or PR-speak, but if an article has potential, he often gives detailed advice that, if implemented, will almost always result in an article of acceptable quality.

  • Yep, spot on. I used to think DGG to be too much of an inclusionist but his rational arguments, and the consistency of them across a broad range of subjects, has caused me to learn much about what really is and is not reasonably warranted here, and what level of discussion (CSD, PROD, AFD) is most appropriate for a given subject.
