WikiProject Good Articles's 2016-2017 GA Cup

WikiProject Good Articles's 2016-2017 GA Cup

Greetings, all!

We would like to announce the start of the 4th GA Cup, a competition that seeks to encourage the reviewing of Good article nominations! Thus far, there have been three GA Cups, which were successful in reaching our goals of significantly reducing the traditionally long queue at GAN, so we're doing it again. Currently, there are over 400 nominations listed. We hope that we can again make an impact this time.

The 4th GA Cup will begin on November 1, 2016. Four rounds are currently scheduled (which will bring the competition to a close on February 28, 2017), but this may change based on participant numbers. We may take a break in December for the holidays, depending on the results of a poll of our participants taken shortly after the competition begins. The sign-up and submissions process will remain the same, as will the scoring.

Sign-ups for the upcoming competition are currently open and will close on November 14, 2016. Everyone is welcome to join; new and old editors, so sign-up now!

If you have any questions, take a look at the FAQ page and/or contact one of the judges.

Cheers from 3family6, Figureskatingfan, Jaguar, MrWooHoo, and Zwerg Nase. We apologize for the delay in sending out this message until after the competition has started. Thank you to Krishna Chaitanya Velaga for aiding in getting this message out.

To subscribe or unsubscribe to future GA Cup newsletters, please add or remove your name to our mailing list. If you are a participant, you will be on the mailing list no matter what as this is the easiest way to communicate between all participants.

Welington Zaza

Hi! On a second thought, perhaps it would make sense to mention somewhere in the article that the junior records in 110m hurdles take place on smaller size hurdles than the regular ones. Just an idea. --Tone 09:42, 6 November 2016 (UTC)

Hello, I need your help. I am participating in the African Stub Activity thing-a-ma-jig. I found a core stub for burkina faso, but it already exceeds 1500 characters. Do i just enter it as if i edited it or what?GrecoRomanNut (talk) 05:35, 14 November 2016 (UTC)

Hi GrecoRomanNut, thanks for participating in the contest. Firstly, a core stub must meet one of two criteria:
Eye of the Storm (2015 film) meets neither of those criteria. However, that doesn't mean you can't enter it into the contest. Any article that was a stub that was then expanded to over 1500 bytes of prose is eligible. Your article is currently only 1311 bytes. This is taken from the page size tool, specifically the "Prose size (text only): 1311 B (226 words) "readable prose size"" line. If you expand it a bit more and make sure it is well referenced, your entry will be accepted by one of the judges, either Dr. Blofeld (who is the main judge) or myself. Your entry on the entries page is fine although it is helpful for us if you include a diff of your changes. I also noticed that, perhaps accidentally, you added {{tick}}. That template should only be used by the judges to distinguish accepted entries. I would recommend that you have a read of Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon/Rules which details the full competition rules. The "competition and entry process" section of that page details the particulars on how to enter articles. Finally, once you have de-stubbed an article (even if it isn't long enough to be accepted — as long as it is over ~500 B+ should be fine) please add it to this list at the bottom of the main contest page. This acts as a summary of all articles approved in the contest. Thanks, — Yellow Dingo (talk) 05:52, 14 November 2016 (UTC)

Well Yellow Dingo, I am not talking about eye of the storm. I am talking about "sport in burkina faso" it is over 1600. So i just improve it? And second, Eye of the Storm is over 1500 bytes. I checked it. Could you please just tell me what i need to do for both pages to get them to be accepted? I am confused. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GrecoRomanNut (talkcontribs) 22:43, 14 November 2016 (UTC)

Hey Yellow Dingo, I was wondering if Eye of the Storm is eligible now for the contest? And I was wondering when someone would approve the two posts i made on the burkina faso entries page. Could you help me? GrecoRomanNut (talk) 00:52, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

New Page Review needs your help

Hi Yellow Dingo,

As an AfC reviewer you're probably aware that a new user right has been created for patrolling new pages (you might even have been granted the right already, and admins have it automatically).

Since July there has been a very serious backlog at Special:NewPagesFeed of over 14,000 pages, by far the worst since 2011, and we need an all out drive to get this back down to just a few hundred that can be easily maintained in the future. Unlike AfC, these pages are already in mainspace, and the thought of what might be there is quite scary. There are also many good faith article creators who need a simple, gentle push to the Tea House or their pages converted to Draft rather than being deleted.

Although New Page Reviewing can occasionally be somewhat more challenging than AfC, the criteria for obtaining the right are roughly the same. The Page Curation tool is even easier to use than the Helper Script, so it's likely that most AfC reviewers already have more than enough knowledge for the task of New Page Review.

It is hoped that AfC reviewers will apply for this right at WP:PERM and lend a hand. You'll need to have read the page at WP:NPR and the new tutorial.

(Sent to all active AfC reviewers) MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 16:33, 15 November 2016 (UTC)
