2019 Irish local elections - summary

Hi, as you appear to have an interest in Irish politics could you have a look at 2019 Irish local elections for me please. I'm dealing with an email from the Workers and Unemployed Action that the total of 1st preference votes given in the summary table is wrong. The claim is that it should be 2621 and the table has missed the votes received by Michael Cleere in Carrick –on-Suir, see 2019 Tipperary County Council election. Reverting on a frequent basis

Are you perhaps reverting changes too frequently? I cannot understand your reasons for reverting my recent edits on Members of the 32nd Dáil or the Political parties template, particularly as you had made constructive edits to my newly created page Independent politicians in Ireland, which my edits were linking. You've also since allowed these edits. You reverted my merging of Minister of State (Ireland) into Ministers and Secretaries Acts on the grounds that it had not been discussed, which under WP:BOLD is not in itself necessary. I will at a later stage discuss my views on the Minister of State article and related pages, but at this stage I'll preview that discussion only to state that it falls under WP:MERGEREASON point 3, Short text. Similarly you reverted my edits to various templates on the same day, where my reasons actually expanded beyond changes relating to my merger. Overusing revert is discussed at WP:DONTREVERT, and as mentioned there, Wikipedia does not have a status quo bias. The structure of pages and projects may and do differ quite substantially over time. I commend you for your work on Irish politics pages here, particularly keeping external links up to date. I don't edit as much as you do, but out of courtesy, would a note on my talk page not be preferable to reverting. I may not see it immediately, but even if edits I make that you disagree with are up for a few days, they can be changed back then, and no significant harm has been done. --Iveagh Gardens (talk) 15:03, 15 July 2019 (UTC)

Clear template on 23rd Government article

Courthouses

Hi - Many thanks for your edits on the Irish courthouses. I was intrigued as to why you were moving the Irish version of the name out of "native name" and into the "name" section. I appreciate that the Irish name needs to be given equal prominence in the real world in Ireland. But this is English wikipedia and Irish is the native language in Ireland. Image in Government of the 6th Dáil

Why have you moved this image to the very end, even after the navigation boxes? When it was first added, it was placed towards the top of the page, near the place for 4th Exec Council. I have no attachment to the image per se, except to the extent that in adding material to the various government pages over the last while, I endeavoured to keep existing material. It was only early this year that you moved the image to the very end. It just looks really out of place there at the very end, and I can't think of other pages that have such images placed just there. It's so trivial that I don't want an edit war over it, but while I am adding to these pages, it seems a very strange place to have it. It should be at the end because it is a large image and best belongs there. It does not have to be near the 4th Exec Council, as membership of the 4th and 5th were the same. Hugh Conaghan was born in Ireland when it was the Irish Free State. It is a common practice to indicate what the country's name was at the time someone was born. Irish language audio files

Hi, I added a few Irish language audio files but you kept taking them down without any reason stated. I'm not sure about the quality of the audio but the speakers demonstrate very good native accent in Irish as they are native speakers so I am confused. They have been fixed to what is actually on the source. Also, no proof for claim he was against Mary McAleese running for a second term. Year of birth was wrong, Larkin was born in 1970. However, as C.Fred has pointed out, there seems to be conflicting sources so we will leave it at c. 1970. Larkin died one month before his 49th birthday and the some media outlets made an error. Douglas Hyde and Sean T. O'Kelly had NO recognition at all outside Ireland, given the fact that the Presidency was then merely a local replacement for the Governor-General of the Irish Free State.

So so wrong! Ireland had the status of Dominion until 1937 when a new constitution was adopted, in which the state was named "Ireland" and effectively became a republic, with an elected non-executive president as head of state. It was officially declared a republic in 1949, following the Republic of Ireland Act 1948. Diplomats were accredited to the king, but the president exercised all internal functions of a head of state. For instance, the President gave assent to new laws with his own authority, without reference to King George VI who was only an "organ", that was provided for by statute law. Only Dominions could be members of the British Commonwealth until 1949, when the London Declaration was adopted to allow republics and independent native monarchies to become Commonwealth members.

Between 29 December 1937 and 17 April 1949, Ireland was a Dominion with King George VI as Ireland's head of state (King of Ireland) - as his title in Ireland was the same as everywhere else in the British Commonwealth.

Presidents Hyde & O'Kelly had NO international recognition at all - in effect, serving as local replacements for the Governor-General of the Irish Free State.

If a foreign country's Ambassador was to be accredited for service in Ireland between 1937 and 1949, their credentials documents had to be signed off by their government, then accepted by King George VI in London, before they could proceed to their posting in Dublin.

It was the External Relations Act itself that gave the foreign relations power to the King, not to the Presidents.

Ireland was therefore a member of the British Commonwealth - and it was also a Dominion, even after the 1922 Constitution was replaced by the 1937 Constitution.

Ireland's banknotes and coins dated from 1938 to 1948 are therefore issues of the Dominion of Ireland (1937-49) - and part of the British Commonwealth series, along with Postal orders of Ireland that was issued from 1938 until a few days before 18 April 1949 (Easter Monday). - (124.197.55.28 (talk) 09:59, 8 June 2020 (UTC))

Spire nicknames

Hey, I'm not sure by what bar you are setting the nicknames to be "none in common usage". In particular the ones in Griffith's book are pretty solidly represented when you do a Google search for them. The concept of Dubliners giving nicknames to their public art is well documented, and the well known ones are all mentioned in their respective articles (the floozi in the jacuzzi, the tart with the cart, the hags with the bags etc). Sorting is a difficult one in a table like this, because of the range of different responsibilities, which change much more for juniors than even the formalised way they do for cabinet ministers. Ministers of State pages

Hi @Spleodrach: Great to come onto Wikipedia and find you've done the page for Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, the very next one I was planning to do! It's good to be able to collaborate on this reformatting. It's a more legally precise way of listing them; even if there will be discontinuities, e.g., Trade Promotion moving between DFA and DETE, at least we're doing it in line with the official changes of responsibilities, rather than trying to formulate our own throughlines. And it means for each department, we can have a page for the department with general descriptions of current functions and responsible bodies and the table of transfers, a page for the government minister, and a page for the ministers of state. For disestablished departments like Labour or P&T, I'd imagined including the MoS list on that page, neither being that long, and they're now a closed set, so the pages won't get that long either.

One small idea, that came to me through the process, that in the relevant Government pages, the link to Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment should be in the column for department, rather than responsibilities. This is from a MOS:LINKCLARITY perspective, and frees up the responsibilities column to link to either specific responsibilities that would still get their own pages (e.g. European Affairs, Children, Disability) or to a body like the OPW or EPA. It also means that where there are separate departments but one responsibility (again, e.g. Children pre-2011), each list of Ministers of State page would be linked in the Departments column (so as Education, Health, Justice). This page, as it was, is rather damaging and biased against the person involved and or his political party due to the selective nature of topics mentioned in the political career chapter and how they were presented.

Why you would suggest that edits about the results of his elections and the preference votes he obtained, his new office location and the fact that he has been elected in two different constituencies is biased and unrelated information is quite interesting to say the least.

However, the main points in the original piece, whilst in my view clearly biased against the person, have been left unedited and only additional information about these two selected topics has been provided in order to provide a reader with greater clarity on the issues originally included. They were included to provide a reader with additional information on the two points raised to let the reader make up their own minds. Is that not fair instead of just reading what you believe to be allowable? The additional information provided are facts and have been referenced from many different Irish news articles that were included. Why would they be removed?

As the edits have been twice removed, it is clear in my opinion that there may be another agenda going on here. As a result, I am using this mechanism in the first instance to resolved the situation.

I gave the user two warnings

I have already gave the user:Cupper52 two warnings regarding his actions while dealing with AFD. The user is not following proper WP:Before and is not checking the resources and all. He is simply nominating random articles for deletion within 1 or 2 minutes. I think he is trying to obtain autopatrolled or any other rights, so he need to participate in AFD's and all. Francis Cahill removal of Gaelic name

Hi just wondering why the Irish version of Francis Cahill‘s name is being reverted(I think on two occasions) When looking at the pages of his peers noted in the article all have their Irish name in brackets. Francis was also a major proponent of Irish culture, language and identity so would be appropriate for his Gaelic name to appear also. Dail voting records quite often show his name in Irish too so looks to have been commonly used amongst native speakers and records, thanks Twilki Ire (talk) 23:53, 11 February 2021 (UTC)

Frank Carney

Hello, There is inaccurate, unresearched, information on the page for Frank Carney that I keep changing and someone keeps reverting. Apart from the general lack of information that is continuously reverted to, it keeps saying that he fought in the 1914-18 war, which he did not, and that he fought in the Irish Civil War, which he did not. Frank Carney was a founder member of a neutrality group which canvassed members of the I.R.A. to oppose the Civil War. See Derry Journal 12th Jan 1923 for advertisment placed by Frank Carney to canvass for members, and Derry Journal Feb 7 1923 where it reports on the convention held oppose the Civil War and sue for peace. Frank Carney's name is on both of these. I will attempt to upload pics of these entries here. Frank Carney joined the Inniskillings on 19 Aug 1914: Signed up for 3 years service with the Inniskillings 5 foot 5 inches 110 pounds under 8 stone Eyes Grey Hair Dark Posted 5th Inniskillings 19.8.14 Private Promoted 5th Inniskillings 21. 9. 14 Lance Corporal Promoted 5th Inniskillings 13.10.14 Corporal Promoted 5th Inniskillings 14.12.14 Sergeant Posted 4th Inniskillings 24.6.15 in CLONMANY He had repeated bouts on illness during this time, and never left Ireland - he did not fight in World War 1. On Dec 2nd 1915 he was 'Discharged – 1 year 107 days. No longer physically fit for War service.' I have all his military records. Now I have also all the references from the Bureau of Military Intelligence to tell you everything we know about him in the War of Independence, but there is no point in me putting accurate information with correct references if you continously take it down and put up fantasies. Hi @Billsmith60:, yes Wikipedia policy is to use full name at the start of the article and the nickname as article title and at the top of the infobox, see Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter and Tony Blair for examples. Regarding this, have you read the entire article, WP:LEADCITE and WP:WIAGA? My copy of The Encyclopedia of Dublin (Douglas Bennett, Gill & Macmillan 2005) p. 224 lists the street as "Sackville Street (O'Connell Street)". I've given you a citation in the above thread; also per the Manual of style for lead sections, "Because the lead will usually repeat information that is in the body, editors should balance the desire to avoid redundant citations in the lead with the desire to aid readers in locating sources for challengeable material." And so it is in this case, in the body of the article we find "He titled the new development Sackville Street after the then Lord Lieutenant of Ireland Lionel Cranfield Sackville, Duke of Dorset." cited to A Short History of Dublin: Dublin From the Vikings to the Modern Era. (Richard Keen, Gill & Macmillan, 2010). Indeed, the best quality sources to use are often in print. However, that you can't personally see two sources that adequately verify the claim is unfortunate, but the verifiability policy says "Do not reject reliable sources just because they are difficult or costly to access. Some reliable sources may not be easily accessible. For example, an online source may require payment, and a print-only source may be available only through libraries.".
