Question

I have mentioned the following problem before and nothing has changed, so I include an example below which proves my point as it also gives the Audio pronunciation. The problem is the Punctuation signs. In English, a small flat line over the vowel means a Long sound, as A sounding like Ayy, or as in the word ABLE. The same for i,e,o,u. For a different "short" sound, a small cup shaped line is usually used- or nowadays it is just left open.

They get it correct in the literature further in the page, but NEVER in the first dark example of the word. This is contributing to many differing opinions on how a word sounds. The following example the word "mudra" , if you read as it shows would be 'mudrahy'. But it is correctly pronounced 'mudruh'. So, then, either please tell me how to fix this- OR- surely your programmer could just make a command to repair all first word examples?? This may sound petty, but it has caused considerable arguments! Below is the example- cheers

Previous punctuation marks problem/question.

I forgot to sign previous msg with these Jeevenson (talk) 00:55, 8 October 2013 (UTC) I really would like your response, or an answer would be much appreciated.jeevenson

Hi Jeevenson, thank you for your message.
You say "I have mentioned the following problem before and nothing has changed,"
I have searched my talk page archive, and have found only one previous message from you, which was aabout the Iranian Calendar, on 30 October 2011.
I replied that it was outside my area of knowledge and I recommended that you ask again at the Wikipedia:Reference desk, where someone could most probably help.
The article you give as an example Mudra; again it is not in my area of expertise. I am very sorry.
I would direct you again to either the Wikipedia Help desk or the Wikipedia Teahouse, where you have more chance in finding someone who knows a little about the subject.
I'm sorry I couldn't help you, but I wish you best of luck in sorting your issue. :-)

Articles you might like to edit, from SuggestBot

We are currently running a study on the effects of adding additional information to SuggestBot's suggestions. Participation in the study is voluntary. Should you wish to not participate in the study, or have questions or concerns, you can find contact information on the SuggestBot study page.

IMPORTANT CHANGES: We have modified the selection of articles SuggestBot suggests and altered the design to incorporate more information about the articles, as described in this explanation.

Note: All columns in this table are sortable, allowing you to rearrange the table so the articles most interesting to you are shown at the top. All images have mouse-over popups with more information.

Changes to SuggestBot's suggestions

We have changed the number of suggested articles and which categories they are selected from. The number of stubs has been greatly reduced, the number of articles needing sources doubled, and two new categories added (orphans and unencyclopaedic articles). We have also modified the layout of the suggestions and added sortable columns with various types of information about each article. The first two columns are:

Views/Day
Daily average number of views an article's had over the past 14 days.
Quality
Predicted article quality on a 1- to 3-star scale. Placing your cursor over the stars should give you a pop-up describing the article's quality (Low/Medium/High), current assessment class, and predicted assessment class.

The method we use to predict article quality also allows us to assess whether an article might need specific types of work in order to improve its quality. The work needed might not correspond to cleanup tags added to the article, since our method is not based on those. We have added five columns reflecting this work assessment, where a red X indicates improvement is needed. Placing your cursor over an X should give you a pop-up with a short description of the work needed. The five columns seek to answer the following five questions:

Content
Is more content needed?
Headings
Does this article have an appropriate section structure?
Images
Is the number of illustrative images about right?
Links
Does this article link to enough other Wikipedia articles?
Sources
For its length, is there an appropriate number of citations to sources in this article?

SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways based on other articles you've edited, including straight text similarity, following wikilinks, and matching your editing patterns against those of other Wikipedians. It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. We appreciate that you have signed up to receive suggestions regularly, your contributions make Wikipedia better — thanks for helping!

Why did you revert the Moscow weatherbox?

Why did you reverted my changing in Moscow weatherbox? I was fixing the mistakes in the weatherbox. Please don't revert again. Understand. Musarabbyahmad (talk) 11:43, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi Musarabbyahmad, I explained in my edit summary: "RV unsourced, unexplained changes to statistical data"
You seem to be making changes to multiple pages where you alter the climate data without giving any explanation or providing areliable source for the changes.
You can read more about our policy on sourcing in Wikipedia:Verifiability.
I notice from your talk page that other editors have already explained this to you.
Kind Regards -- Marek.69 talk 13:54, 11 October 2013 (UTC)
But Marek, it is very true, we want to fix the Wikipedia, there are something wrong in climate change, we should arrange and re-correct the climate boxes in Wikipedia otherwise it will become false editions. Please try to understand.Musarabbyahmad (talk) 14:06, 11 October 2013 (UTC)
Hi Musarabbyahmad, you are obviously getting your data from somewhere.
Please provide this source (preferably as an inline citation) when you modify the article's climate statistics.
If you are using a reliable source, then all should be OK.
If however you continue to change statistical data, without providing sources, you are very likely to continue being reverted.
Best Regards -- Marek.69 talk 14:20, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

To Slang

Marek, please don't use with me slang. And don't warn me, why don't you trying to understand that my tale? What did I done for you? I have been told you some times that my work and responsibility is to fix and re-correct the Wikipedia. I want to solve the problems and false of Wikipedia. So don't be misunderstanding. Be a friendly, please don't be merciless and stony-hearted, otherwise Jesus didn't forgive you. Musarabbyahmad (talk) 14:18, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

Musarabbyahmad, I'm sorry but I don't understand. Where have I used slang? -- Marek.69 talk 14:23, 11 October 2013 (UTC)
Ymblanter corrected commented that Musarabbyahmad has difficulties in understanding others' suggestions and Wikipedia policies.
Despite earnest requests (on the user's talk-page & here above) to provide reliable sources, Musarabbyahmad seems to be totally ignoring this. Also pathetic is his use of abusive language and his false accusation on other editors. It is pathetic to see he is falsely accusing Marek69 of using slang while the opposite is true. Musarabbyahmad has unduly killed much of my time (and certainly other editors') which I planned to spent on some necessary editing. Hope he will understand the matter.-AsceticRosé 15:44, 11 October 2013 (UTC)
Hi AsceticRose, I left a message on Musarabbyahmad's talk page, specifically about the unnacceptable messages he left on your talk page, reminding him about ourcivility policy. Unfortunately it appears that he has not heeded any of the advice given on this, or on providing sources for his changes on statistical data.

Thuringian cities

Hello Marek,

i want to say thank you for your edits on my new articles on the major Thuringian cities (Erfurt, Jena, Weimar,Eisenach and Gera). I'm a native German speaker and try to improve my English skills by translating some articles about my Heimat :-) Your contributions were always helpful to that. Hi Michael, thank you for your message. I'm very pleased to be of service :-)

Edit war - Zadar

Marek, I do not understand. It is not me that it's removing text from the article Zadar. It's the other way round. Perhaps that text should removed but first a discussion should have place. Also please note I have been qualified of fascist by the unknown user removing the text. Not really nice. What do you think? Silvio1973 (talk) 19:41, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi Silvio, I messaged you to remind you of the three-revert rule.
It does not matter who is right or who is wrong; if you get into an edit war with another user and break thethree-revert rule, you are both likely to be blocked.
It is much more productive to start a discussion on the talk page and let other editors voice their opinions to possibly achieve a solution.
If you do not wish to do this, another solution is to walk-away from the problem and let other editors deal with it.
I messaged you simply to try to help you avoid getting into trouble. I have not studied the article closely, so I cannot say whose actions are right and whose are wrong.
Kind Regards -- Marek.69 talk 20:48, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
Thank you Marek, this is indeed the right approach. But does it work always? The issue is that all articles related to Dalmatia are extremely controversial and basically controlled by an handful of tenacious editors (all from the some country, by the way).
I have right now a similar issue with the article Istrian Exodus. I have posted a fully sourced edit and it has been reverted by User:DIREKTOR. I have restored the edit and gone to the talk page seeking for explanation but the edit has been removed again. As you can see on the talk page of the article, an endless (and useless) discussion has been going on this article during the last 3 months. I requested a 3O and a RfC on the BRD about DIREKTOR's behaviour. Even if both informally confirmed the correctness of my edits, there was no formal decision taken by any administrator. In the end the discussion was stopped by Direktor on the ground that my English is not good enough and contribute on Wikipedia[[1]].
So now what is your suggestion? Perhaps I should walk away and leave this article exclusively controlled by one single editor?
I am very curious to know what is your advice on this item. In the end if someone would explain me why my edits are not acceptable, this would be fine for me. But what happens is that they are simply reverted without any reason (well, there is a reason of course). Thank you for any advice. --Silvio1973 (talk) 06:49, 25 October 2013 (UTC)
As you can see I am offering to discuss. But does not it work. I will ask again for a 3rd opinion, which likely will give me right. And than? The edits will be anyway reverted. It will be just a loss of time. Silvio1973 (talk) 12:24, 25 October 2013 (UTC)
Hi Silvio1973, As I said previously, I am not an expert in these topics, I simply correct a few spelling and grammar mistakes on them, so I think you are correct by going to Third opinion (3O).
Kind Regards & Best of luck -- Marek.69talk 19:25, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

ICE FM

OK, I have no idea who you are...but... on the subject of ICE FM in Cromwell NZ the station wouldn't have even got off the ground if I hadn't quit with QFM Queenstown and helped Stuart Campbell set it up!! For God's sake. I was the bloody breakfast announcer, producer and program director from day one! I slipped on an ICY floor getting out of the shower and came up with the name! I also had to take Stuart Campbell to the labor court in NZ to get pay he owed me. I am the original "Kaptain Kaos" of QFM and did MOST of the work setting that station up with Craig Stephen, then I read the BULL%$# that Campbell posted on WIKIPEDIA..my blood boiled! Want proof?? EMAIL ME and I will send you video etc. If Wikipedia is to be TRUTHFUL, then tell the WHOLE truth. Regards, Steve Sinclair zl1fox@yahoo.co.nz — Preceding unsigned comment added byKaptain kaos icefm (talkcontribs) 05:54, 31 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi Kaptain kaos icefm, thank you for your message. I have no idea who you are either. :-)
The reason I messaged you was to do with this edit, which blanked Wikipedia's Ice FM article.
On Wikipedia, removing content without explanation or blanking an article is considered to be vandalism and you risk being blocked from editing if your edits are considered disruptive.
I notice the Ice FM article has no references. If you disagree with any part of the article, you are free to dispute that part by inserting a {{Citation needed}} tag. Unsourced information which has been challenged and tagged, can after a period of time be deleted if it remains unsourced.
If you have any more questions about editing Wikipedia, I would be very happy to help.
Alternatively, Wikipedia had a help desk and a teahouse especially for new users to ask questions about editing Wikipedia.

Translating a page

Hi Marek69, Could you please help me translate a summary of this page from English to Czech. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hooman_Khalatbari I need it as soon as possible and your help would be greatly appreciated. Entekhabat (talk) 19:38, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi Entekhabat, thank you for your message.
I would love to help you, but unfortunately I fear my understanding of the Czech language would not be enough to translate an article into the language. I'm sorry.
I notice that there are 11 editors listed in the Category:Translators from Czech to English. Maybe one of them could help you.
Alternatively, you might be able find someone on the Czech Wikipedia to help you.
I wish you the best of luck. :-)

Wrong Grammar Punctuation Marks are used on Wikipedia

Hi Marek- I do not know programming well enough to fix this. Just hit the wiki for, "Ammar ibn Yasir".You get: Āmir ibn Mālik Abū al-Yaqẓān. EVERY SINGLE LONG VOWEL SIGN USED OVER THE LETTERS IS WRONG ! It would lead one to say the name incorrectly-instead of enunciating it as it should- ie: Ahm'ear, if you used the sign you would say Aim'ear. Instead of properly Ma'lik, it wants you to say 'May'lick. All I am asking for is the program does not provide for the correct punctuation sign,ie: the tiny little "u" over the letter, instead of a "-". !!!! If the programmers add the correct sign- I would be happy to correct/edit every wrong one I come across. Thanks for your consideration. Jeevenson (talk) 12:21, 7 November 2013 (UTC) Jeff Evenson

Hi Jeevenson, thank you for your message.
My suggestion would be to raise this issue on the talk page of the Ammar ibn Yasir article, where someone more knowledgeable on the subject may be able to sort the problem out. I also recommended again theWikipedia:Reference desk and the Wikipedia Help desk.
This help page is about entering special characters into Wikipedia, and might be of help to you also.

Marek69, I deleted the info from the page Chlorobium chlorochromatii because it was not yet supposed to be a live page. Hi, there were edits made from your IP address which appeared unconstructive.
If you did not make these edits, it is very possible that you have a shared IP address.
You are welcome to continue editing without logging in, but you may want to consider creating an account. Doing so is free, requires no personal information, and provides several benefits such as the ability to create articles. For a full outline and explanation of the benefits that come with creating an account, please see this page. If you edit without a username, your IP address (75.163.221.183) is used to identify you instead.
To avoid any further confusion or misunderstandings, I would strongly advise you to create an account.

I have decided to put on a mini-contest within the November 2013 monthly disambiguation contest, on Saturday, November 23 (UTC). I will personally give a $20 Amazon.com gift card to the disambiguator who fixes the most links on that server-day (see the project page for details on scoring points). Since we are not geared up to do an automated count for that day, at 00:00, 23 November 2013 (UTC) (which is 7:00 PM on November 22, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the project page leaderboard. I will presume that anyone who is not already listed on the leaderboard has precisely nine edits. At 01:00, 24 November 2013 (UTC) (8:00 PM on November 23, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the leaderboard at that time (the extra hour is to give the board time to update), and I will determine from that who our winner is. I will credit links fixed by turning aWP:DABCONCEPT page into an article, but you'll have to let me know me that you did so. Here's to a fun contest. Note that according to the Daily Disambig, we currently have under 256,000 disambiguation links to be fixed. If everyone in the disambiguation link fixers category were to fix 500 links, we would have them all done - so aim high! Cheers! bd2412 T 03:03, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

Did You update this page? Someone updated this page and posted information on this page that doesn't seem to be accurate, and I don't think the information on this page is up to date,

Did You update address information for Miss. Barbara Bush in NYC? It appears She doesn't live on that street because I received RTS letter from NYC and someone posted most recent article that She moved to apartment that is probably new and not on that street, I think so, but do You know on which street She has apartment? Are You sure this address listed on this page is most recent?

Hi, thank you for your message.
I'm not sure why you thought I had posted information on that page.
Every Wikipedia article has a View History tab.
If you click the History tab on the Greenwich Village article (which can be foundhere), you can see the history of all the edits made on the article and the editors who made them. If you wish to discuss a particular edit, I would suggest doing this on the Greenwich Village article's talk page (which can be found here)
I hope this helps :-)

St. Peter

I'm sorry to say that that was really offensive on several levels. In ictu oculi (talk) 03:26, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

I'm sorry if you found my comments offensive. That was not my intention.
In my edit summary I stated that "the humour does not mean that I do not take this subject seriously" and I meant that.
I honestly gave it as an example of WP:NPOV (and non-religious use) use of the term.
There is much said on the talk page about the Catholic views and Protestant views, and other denominations of Christianity, but not much from a non religious POV.
There are bound to a large number of readers who are non-religious.
Jokes about the pearly gates and St Peter are just light humour and in my opinion harmless. They are not designed to be offensive. Even some religious people I know tell them. :Also they are common, so by that reasoning I gave it as an genuine example of common use. People who are not religious would probably have little exposure to St Peter if not for this humour.
As I said I believe this is just another instance where St Peter is known in western culture, albeit as part of a joke culture, but nevertheless still one valid example of common use. I personally do not think religion and humour should be mutually exclusive. If done in the right way it can be a positive to different points of view or belief, finding mutual ground.
One again, apologies if you thought I meant this offensively, or directed it at you personally to take the mickey. I did not.
Best Regards -- Marek.69 talk 03:53, 6 December 2013 (UTC)
I find it hard to believe anyone could seriously be offended by that. Hot Stop talk-contribs 04:57, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Persistent Vandalism

I refer to your last message to me. I would appreciate an explanation of your position/involvement?

With regard your comments, they are inaccurate/incorrect. I am actually removing the vandalism not the perpetrator. I have had to remove on 4 separate occasions editing that is malicious and libelous. On each occasion the 'other' user has re pasted the information. If you look at my talk page, another administrator was assisting? Have you contacted the actual perpetrator of the vandalism? Hi Mr Lymm, thank you for your message.
The information you tried to deleteappeared to be referenced by a reliable source, namely The Warrington Guardian, in this article:Parents demand Lymm High School answers
Adding reliably sourced information to Wikipedia, despite the fact it may be negative, is not vandalism.
Another Wikipedia editor has since the section of text you wished to remove, to better reflect the source given.
Do you think it is fair now?

Hi Marek69, I think the new edit is a more accurate reflection. Thank you. The previous edit (by the IP provided) was not accurately sourced. The content was certainly negative and malicious in my opinion. Is there anything to prevent the previous user amending the page again back to when it was inaccurate? Thank you again. Lymm High School

I know you've been paying attention to the edits on this article. I'm wondering if you'd be willing to make some edits since I'm not a registered user and can't. In the Ofsted Inspection section is a parenthetical "(FIRED JUNE 2013)", which is certainly unencyclopedic and POV. Would you be willing to delete that phrase? (Personally, I think the entire sentence is agenda pushing and shouldn't be there, but the parenthetical comment is egregious.) Thanks for any help you can provide.70.134.228.221 (talk) 00:38, 15 December 2013 (UTC)

I put pending changes on the page, so anyone including IPs can still edit, but the edit won't go live until a reviewer has looked at it. That will delay good edits slightly, but it should stop unsourced negative ones from going live.ϢereSpielChequers 08:08, 15 December 2013 (UTC)

GOCE December 2013 Blitz wrap-up and January Drive invitation

December Notes from the Guild of Copy Editors

The December blitz ran from December 8–14. The theme for this blitz was articles tied in some way to religion. Seven editors knocked out 20 articles over the course of the week. Our next blitz will be in February, with a theme to be determined. Feel free to make theme suggestions at theGuild talk page!

The January 2014 Backlog elimination drive is a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on January 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on January 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goals are to copy edit all articles tagged in October and November 2012 and complete all requests placed before the end of 2013. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits at least one article, and special awards will be given to the top five in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", "Number of articles of over 5,000 words", "Number of articles tagged in October and November 2012", and "Longest article". We hope to see you there!

The Dumping Ground

Hi. I was wondering if you think The Dumping Ground (series 1) and The Dumping Ground (series 2) should be merged intoList of The Dumping Ground episodes? I am in the process of creating individual articles for every episode, anyway, and they can be expanded by other users (I have started them off). Emirates123 (talk) 15:30, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi Emirates123, thank you for your message.
I've had a look at the articles you mention and The Dumping Ground (series 1) and The Dumping Ground (series 2) could easily be merged into List of The Dumping Ground episodes. I think that its a good idea.
However, TV series are not my usual area of editing, so whether they should be merged I cannot say.
If you are unsure, you could start a merge discussion on the talk pages and see what others think.
I hope this helps. :-)

Hi. You recently added an orphan tag to the 'Criticism of Mother Teresa' page. There is a link on the main "Mother Teresa" page that cites this a the 'main article'... so I don't know if that counts for or against orphan status. Just an FYI. TreebeardTheEnt (talk) 16:42, 21 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi TreebeardTheEnt, thank you for your message.
Ideally it should be three or more links (according to Wikipedia's orphan criteria)
I can see that this one is difficult to link to apart than from the main article, so I've removed the tag.

WikiProject Poland Newsletter • January 2014 • Issue II

WikiProject Poland Newsletter • January 2014 • Issue II
For our freedom and yours

Welcome to the second issue of WikiProject Poland newsletter, the Monitor (named afterthe first Polish newspaper).

Our Project has been operational since 1 June, 2005, and also serves as the Poland-related Wikipedia notice board. I highly recommend watchlisting the Wikipedia:WikiProject Poland page, so you can be aware of the ongoing discussions. We hope you will join us in them, if you haven't done so already! Unlike many other WikiProjects, we are quite active; we get close to a hundred discussion threads each year and we do a pretty good job at answering all issues raised. Last year we werefeatured in the Signpost, and our interviewer was amazed at our activity. In the end, however, even as active as we are, we are just a tiny group - you can easily become one of our core members!

In addition to a lively encyclopedic, Poland-related, English-language discussion forum, we have numerous useful tools that can be of use to you - and that you could help us maintain and develop:

  • we have an active assessment department. As of now, our project has tagged almost 83,000 pages as Poland-related - that's an improvement of over 3,000 new pages since the last newsletter. Out of which 30 still need a quality assessment, and 2,000, assessment. We have done a lot to clear the backlog here (3 years ago those numbers were 1,500 and 20,000, respectively). Can you help assess a few pages?
    • assessing articles is as easy as filling in the class= and importance= parameters on the talk page in the {{WPPOLAND|class=|importance=}} template. See here for a how-to guide.
  • once an article has an assessment template, it will appear in our article alerts and news feed, which provides information on which Poland-related articles are considered for deletion, move, or are undergoing a Good or Featured review. Watchlisting that feed, in addition to watchlisting our project's main page, is a good way to make sure you stay up to date on most Poland-related discussions.
  • you can also see detailed deletion discussions at Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Poland (which is a good place to watchlist if you just want to stay up to date on possible deletions of Poland-related content)
  • we have also begun B-class quality reviews on our talk page, and if our activity increases, hopefully we will be able to institute our own A-class quality reviews. As of now, we have about 500 C-class articles in need of a B-class review. If you'd like to help with them, instructions for doing B-class reviews are to be found in point 10 of our assessment FAQ. In addition to this automated list, you are also encouraged to help review articles from our B-class reviews requested list foundhere.
  • also, those articles will be included in our listing, which allows us to see which top-importance articles are in need for attention, and so on. We have tens of thousands articles in need of cleanup there, so if you ever need something to do, just look at this gigantic list. (I am currently reviewing the articles tagged with notability, either proving them notable or nominating for deletion; there are still several dozens left if you want to help!).
  • did you know that newly created Poland-related articles are listed here. They need to be reviewed, often cleaned-up, occasionally nominated for deletion, and their creators may need to bewelcomed and invited to our project if they show promise as new authors of Poland-related content.
  • we are maintaining a Portal:Poland
  • automated Wikipedia:WikiProject Poland/Popular pages lists the most popular Poland-related pages from the previous month(s)
  • Breaking news: we are looking for a Wikipedian in Residence for the New York City area. See Wikipedia:GLAM/Józef Piłsudski Institute of America for details.

This is not all; on our page you can find a list of useful templates (including userboxes), awards and other tools!

With all that said, how about you join our discussions at WT:POLAND? Surely, there must be something you could help others with, or perhaps you are in need of assistance yourself?

It took me three years to finish this issue. Feel free to help out getting the next one before 2017 by being more active in WikiProject management :)

March GOCE copyedit drive

Notes from the Guild of Copy Editors

The March 2014 backlog elimination drive is a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles in need of copyediting. The drive begins on March 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on March 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goals are to copyedit all articles tagged in December 2012 and January 2013 and to complete all requests placed in January 2014. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copyedits at least one article, and special awards will be given to the top five in the following categories: number of articles, number of words, number of articles over 5,000 words, number of articles tagged in December 2012 and January 2013 and the longest article. We hope to see you there!
