One of three articles

Düsseldorf school and Düsseldorf School are two additional articles being written about the school, ergo, mergers may be done later on. GhostofSuperslum 17:10, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

I am against merging. The school and the School are not the same thing. Kunstakademie started in 1700s and is still there. The Düsseldorf School artists worked mainly from 1830s and 1840s and there are artists who never attended the Kunstakademie but may be refferred as Dûsseldorfians. So if the history of Kunstakademie is long, the School of artists is broad, in many countries, as it is a style. --83.102.70.201 (talk) 10:47, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

Assessment

This is a seemingly important school with some interesting and important alumni. I have therefore changed the rating to high importance. The article needs expansion and referencing. I don't feel qualified to decide on the merger. I would hope that the current confusion can be sorted out asap. Dahliarose (talk) 14:06, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

From Düsseldorf School

Note: I've made changes to reflect the comments below and get rid of the ambiguity, especially since there is already an article on the Kunstakademie. It would be useful to have more detail on the style of and participants in the Düsseldorf School. Smawnmahlau 13:32, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

It looks like this article might be about de:Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, which was not founded by Schadow (he was the second director after Peter von Cornelius). Rl 17:50, 12 July 2005 (UTC)

The Academy of Fine Arts (Kunstakademie) was founded by Cornelius, indeed. But it was Schadow who initiated the Düsseldorf School (Düsseldorfer Malerschule) at the Academy - a stylistic program rather than an institution.

Two articles exist

Düsseldorf school exists, too. I have placed statements in that article taken from New International Encyclopedia. GhostofSuperslum 14:42, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Three and counting

Kunstakademie Düsseldorf is a third article on the school! I have chosen Düsseldorf school as the one to place my edits. Sooner or later, these three articles may be merged. GhostofSuperslum 17:04, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

My most significant observation is that Schadow was absent from the school at times. He left for Italy in 1830. Lessing replaced him as director for about 5 or 6 years (1830-36). Lessing has been credited with having an important influence on the school. Then, Schadow returned and resumed the role of director, but left for Italy in 1840. After some time in Italy, he returned to the school a changed man. He was more religious. Afterward, his paintings are of religious subjects.

At this time, the three articles in Wikipedia are in a state of confusion, marked by inaccuracies. Also, the title Kunstakademie Düsseldorf is a real tongue-twister to users of the English version of Wikipedia. The title Düsseldorf school is preferable, for certain.

Statements contained here in this article (Düsseldorf school) have been extracted or copied from New International Encyclopedia, which was published in the United States when a hot, feverish interest in art was sweeping across that nation. According to New International Encyclopedia, Schadow left the school in 1830 and Lessing replaced him as director. That statement conflicts with the list of directors in the article Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. GhostofSuperslum 02:14, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

According to information in New International Encyclopedia, Schadow traveled to Italy in 1830 and again in 1840. He became more religious after the second visit. After he returned to Düsseldorf, he painted religious paintings with themes related to religion. Apparently, he was the director during three periods. A. Replacement of Cornelius (1820s). B. Replacement of Lessing (who had replaced him) in the 1830s. C. Replacement of (someone) in the 1840s. GhostofSuperslum 02:51, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

I think the issue is resolved. The Düsseldorf school of painting was a group of artists active mainly in the 19th century (see school in the OED, sense 5a). It is a different topic. The article Düsseldorf school, despite having a reference to a general encyclopedia, had confused the topics completely, rendering the article useless. I made it into a redirect to the page previously at Düsseldorf School, which I moved to a clearer title. I think that page makes the difference clear. The German Wikipedia article "Düsseldorfer Malerschule" (linked from Düsseldorf school of painting) is far better, and somebody should translate it. --Hegvald (talk) 18:13, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
