Hi, thanks for tackling this one. Suggest under Services that Driffield, Hornsea, Withernsea, Beverley & Bridlington hospitals be noted, do not know if they come under the same trust. Just had a thought on sport - what about golf courses? There is one in Bridlington & another in Coniston/Gansted. I think there is also one in Sutton-on-Hull but it may be just a practice range. Keith D (talk) 19:28, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
What do you think about changing the Sport section to Sport and leisure which is allowed in WP:UKCITIES (I know as I have just corrected that page} and including the long distance footpaths into it. There is the Trans Pennine Trail (which finishes as the Hornsea Rail Trail) and the Yorkshire Wolds Way that would be useful. Keith D (talk) 21:43, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
The category is probably about 97% complete as I went through the East Riding Council gazetteer and created all of the stub articles when I first started on wiki. May be I was too enthusiastic and created subs for small obscure places but they are all there. There are even places missed out of the gazetteer which have articles though there are no entries for areas in Hull apart from a couple that others have created. Hi, I have just removed this chunk of text from Kingston upon Hull article. It is probably more suitable for the East Riding of Yorkshire article or the History of the East Riding of Yorkshire article so just in case you can use it. The first reference looks OK for the boats article, and possibly the East Riding one, may be could link in the boats article by mentioning it in the East Riding history section. Hi. I had a look at the refs that you added to the article and was slightly perturbed to see that ref 3, which takes us to here leads to the stuff that was incompetently pasted wholesale, by User:82.8.5.12 - who has edited a rather, er, eclectic collection of topics - into the article, and which was subsequently (to an extent) cleaned up by me. That may be a good idea, I should be in Hornsea, Brid and Scarborough during the week. If you want to draft something, may be we could encourage people to work on these articles as a break from their usual activities. We have Category:Coastal settlements in North Yorkshire and Category:Coastal settlements in the East Riding of Yorkshire that were recently created. Though we seem to get little response from people, have another difficult user now trying to call Calderdale a unitary authority and West Yorkshire a ceremonial county! Hi, I was thinking that may be we should push on with Kingston upon Hull and York articles towards FA and have a preliminary peer review on them. What do you think? I know there is some referencing that needs splitting and a problem over some detail on archbishop I raised on the talk page for Hull. The archbishop was a bit that I put in. I found it on a site that has since changed, and I'm not sure how reliable it was in the first place. I have tried to find the name in lists of archbishops but to no avail. As winter is coming on, I shall have a lot more time to edit, so it is a good time to try improving some of the articles. Anne Bronte is still out in the cold, as well. We could try to get her some recognition. I think I remember buying a book about her in a charity shop just before Christmas. (I think I could write a presentable article about the charity shops of North and East Yorkshire!! :-)) --- I've just had a look for the book on Anne Bronte and yes, I did buy it--Harkey (talk) 09:52, 24 September 2009 (UTC)
I think Anne is probably the best article of the set on the family, may be if the translation happens on the family article we could get some detail from there as well. It would be a useful featured topic but that would take a lot of work. Not got much experience of FA process, only dipped in occasionally when there is an FAC or FAR of relevance, so not sure what is really expected there. Hi, if you are free and want something to do then there is St George's Hall, Bradford which has a copyvio on it and may be Name of Yorkshire can be cracked by putting something in Yorkshire to cover this off then we can get rid of it as per its talk page. Keith D (talk) 00:51, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

I don't hold out much hope for Name of Yorkshire in the Yorkshire article. To get it right and in the right place would mean intruding into the history section at a place where its not all that bad. Looks like some one is playing with the St George's Hall, Bradford article as it has popped into watchlist. The Yorkshire one needs some section adding on the origin of the name which is missing at the moment and may be why the new user created the other article. Keith D (talk) 22:20, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
Great, someone has done St George's Hall, Bradford. The idea seems to be to rejig the copyviolation articles to be as short as acceptably possible then add back the info (not the text) later. C.Hodgson Fowler

Hi. Fowler's name is very familiar to me, but I couldn't remember why. Google tells me that his dates are 1840-1910. I've looked at the most relevant of my architectural books (including lots of Pevsners), but there isn't much by way of biography. What I've discovered is: he was from Durham, was a pupil of George Gilbert Scott, built quite a few churches in County Durham (e.g. St Paul, West Hartlepool), Yorkshire, Lincs and Notts, did lots of restorations, was Durham Cathedral's architectural consultant (or something like that). Anyway, St Andrew's Church at Bishopthorpe is one of his, so that's probably why his name rings a bell. He should be in the DNB. There's a book about him - details here. Wath

Hi, I was adding Category:Civil parishes in North Yorkshire to articles and stumbled across Wath. On the dab page Wath there are 3 plain Waths in North Yorkshire the Ryedale one does not exist as yet. But the problem is the 2 in Harrogate district one is currently at Wath, Harrogate and the other at Wath, North Yorkshire. I have remove the civil parish note from the text of the one that is not a civil parish but we need a better dab for these two. Do you know if there is any local way of distinguishing between the places or have you any suggestions for how we could distinguish between them? Keith D (talk) 10:53, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

The Harrogate one is sometimes called "Wath in Nidderdale" as here to distinguish it from the other. There is not a lot online about the Ryedale one, it's a really tiny part of the Hovingham ward.--Harkey (talk) 12:22, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

Wind farms

I had a thought on this last night when I went to bed. May be we should add something about wind farms to the East Riding of Yorkshire article as it is a hot topic at the moment with the government inspector overruling the planning refusals from the council. Try Salt End they have upgraded the power lines to take the extra power generated from there. There is also talk of an incinerator to burn waste from Hull & East Riding to add to the power output from the area. Keith D (talk) 12:54, 10 October 2009 (UTC)
If you are thinking about adding a section on power then there is the new experimental generator on the Humber that uses tidal power to generate electricity, there was something about it on the BBC and Hull Daily Mail earlier in the year. Keith D (talk) 18:12, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

Thanks, that's another good one to use. I've been doing a lot of reading around associated topics today, as well as trying to tie up some Wiki loose ends. I suppose you could call it a "Wikitidy". My desk and computer files were bursting at the seams with unfiled relevant/irrelevant information and scribbled little notes. I couldn't see the wood for the trees. On East Riding of Yorkshire there is a problem with references 2, 20 & 28, I think I have fixed the rest of the problem links. Could be just a glitch in the web sites but I think the Hull Daily Mail one will need to go back to the paper copy as it is before the archives I can find. Leeds Town Hall thingy

It's a tower. But maybe that's not what you meant. The tower consists of a square colonnade, an elongated lead-covered dome with concave sides, and a cupola on top.

Thanks for the help, though the alt text for the shield was displayed when the cursor was over the Town Hall pic. I've fixed that, and the alt text now appears correctly for the TH and the shield - but not for the map! You can see that I don't have much expertise in this area, but I'm always willing to learn. Glad to know that the text is OK. I'll get on to the rest of the pix later this pm. Well, I lived in Leeds from 1971 to 2004, so most of this wasn't new to me - but it's amazing what one sees when trying to describe a picture to someone who can't see it. I had to resist the temptation to identify streets, background buildings and so on. Future newsletter topic

Just a thought for a future newsletter topic and focus for a month, probably in the new year, would be to improve the Parliamentary Constituency articles and the various MP articles. Especially relevant with the general election on the horizon and these articles will get more hits around that time. I have just tagged the MPs and raised their importance to High. I have a Watchlist of recently changed articles, which I monitor for inappropriate additions, which might bring Wikipedia into disrepute. The additions to the article were originally uncited and appeared to me to be local gossip, then, when I tried to help by adding a citation and toning down the contentious edits my work was reverted. Just spotted that you had added the High Mowthorpe weatherbox to the Pickering article and made me think that we do not have an article on High Mowthorpe to link to. May be we need an article or a redirect for the place so that at least people can find out where it is. All I know is from the map it is just in to North Yorkshire do you know anything about it? Yes. I think perhaps both articles could do with a bit of a helping hand. Kirby Grindalythe concentrates on the village and doesn't mention Duggleby and vice-versa. So both maybe need to mention the civil parish. There are only 101 houses in the CP altogether. Interesting challenge! KG has a Sykes church though. I see that you created an article on vernacular geography. Coincidentally, I created a category of the same name! (I read one of the papers from the Leeds University study but I am not involved in that sort of thing so I was not up to creating an article; I am glad you did.)

However just as a certain editor has for some reason jumped in suspicion on your article, so the new Category too and it got listed for deletion. That seems odd given how useful it could be. Anything an expert in the field can add, would be useful.

Hi, I just spotted an active collaboration here, they do it weekly, but others do it monthly. May be can get some ideas from there for use on the Yorkshire project. Thanks, that's where I spotted an active collaboration too. I'm not really too sure of the amount of support we will get for a collaboration at WPYORKS. I've always found people will willingly contribute when they are asked directly, but seem reluctant to come forward otherwise. I see that you have very quickly and quietly dumped the additions regarding the BBC2 History Cold Case archaeology at Windy Pits. Hi, as you are so good at getting sources may be you could help out on Scarborough Castle. I had a peer review on this last year, which is now archived , but got stuck with the comments relating to sources as I have been unable to get any of them, apart from the one about ghosts which is not really useful. Hi, just had a look at this one and think that the first thing to do here would be to fix-up the References section so that they all use the templates and are all in the same format. Then I would probably split the Notes section up in to real Notes and a References section, the existing References becoming Bibliography. The References could then be made into Havard type ones that link in to their corresponding entry in the Biography section. That would get them into some sort of standardised format and allow for easier navigation.

The External links were commented about previously so these need pruning may be some can become references if we need them and only leave the important ones in this section. They could be used to expand/reference material.

East Riding of Yorkshire

This one needs an update for the 2011 election, but I could not locate any source that gave a summary of the results that could be used. If you can find a source then I would use the existing information to start the East Riding of Yorkshire Council election, 2007. I had to add up the figures for the three wards of Whitby separately as the Whitby Parish statistics didn't give much information, and none at all on religion. Would it need three separate refs?--Harkey (talk) 17:47, 5 August 2011 (UTC)
That is not the problem - the ref goes to the initial select page of the site and I could not work out how to get to any religion figures for Whitby from there. I think the URL needs redirecting to the page after you have the figures displayed. Keith D (talk) 18:28, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

On Talk:Swarcliffe#Woodlands and water, I just suggested a specific reference, regarding "the beck ran crimson with blood" - this book.

I wanted to explain more about formatting references, but thought that'd be better here, on your own user talk page.

One way to make reference more consistent is to use a {{citation}} template. It's certainly not a requirement, but it can be easier to fill in parameters, instead of formatting the line manually. For example, in that case, we could put; 

...the beck ran crimson with blood.<ref>{{Citation
| title=Lancaster and York: The Wars of the Roses
| author=Alison Weir
| publisher=Random House
| year=2009
| isbn=9780099540175
| page=283

Please note, that is citing the book, not the web link. The fact that there's a link to an online copy presented by Google is irrelevent, and optional; it's just a "convenience link"; if the reader actually wanted to verify the information, they would check the book itself.

Err, I don't get it. A video which has 27 views? I checked some edits User:Andreasegde (if this is your question), but I didn't find any problems on this article. Can you provide some diffs made by him or explain the situation more precisely, please. mabdul 23:04, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
OK, I was trying to be discreet. The User:Andreasegde has added a link on the Swarcliffe page to the page Andrew Edge, an article to which he has made an inordinate number of contributions. When checking the refs by Googling etc., I found that the Utube account for "andreasegde" is the realm of Andrew Edge. Some refs on the Andrew Edge article point to his own blog and homepage. I have only checked a few of the other refs but none, so far, prove his connections with the people he mentions, just that these people exist: of which I had no doubt anyway. Putting "Andrew Edge" into Wikipedia the search box reveals an unusual number of links in other articles. I think this may be a case of an editor being in breach of WP:COI.
