LaCinetek is a French video-on-demand platform dedicated to heritage films (released before 2010), founded by film directors Pascale Ferran, Cédric Klapisch and Laurent Cantet[1]. Its uniqueness lies in offering only works selected by filmmakers.

The name is derived from the 1901 association that manages it: initially named La Cinémathèque des réalisateurs at its inception, it was renamed La Cinémathèque des cinéastes in 2023.

Launched in November 2015 in France.[2], it became available in Germany and Austria since February 2019[3][4], and in Belgium and Luxembourg in October 2020[5][6][7].

The project is led by a non-profit association, La Cinémathèque des réalisateurs, created in August 2014 and renamed La Cinémathèque des cinéastes in September 2023 for greater inclusivity[8]. The association brings together the Directors' Guild of France (La SRF), Le Meilleur du Cinéma / UniversCiné (founding members), Arte, the Institut National de l'Audiovisuel, the Cinémathèque de Toulouse, the Guild of Authors, Directors and Producers, Lobster Films, StudioCanal, the Cinémathèque française, the Centre Pompidou, the Deutsche Kinemathek, the Agence du court métrage, as well as five filmmakers, the founding members Pascale Ferran, Cédric Klapisch, Laurent Cantet along with Olivier Assayas and Bertrand Bonello. Alain Rocca, former president of Le Meilleur du Cinéma/UniversCiné, is also among the founding members.

The LaCinetek catalog features over 2,200 films spanning from the early days of cinema to 2010.

Principle edit

Each month, a filmmaker provides a list of 50 recommended films[9]. The list is published on the website, where the films are available for rental or purchase once the rights are acquired.

Since December 2018, LaCinetek also offers "Les films de leur vie" (The Films of Their Life), a section where lists from deceased filmmakers are published. François Truffaut is the first director whose list was published in this section. It is based on the films he mentions in his book "Les Films de ma vie" (The Films of My Life), published on April 21, 2012, by Champs Arts[10].

Birth of the project edit

After attending a meeting at the Directors' Guild of France (La SRF) in 2013, where Alain Rocca, then president of Le Meilleur du Cinéma / UniversCiné, was invited to discuss cinema and video on demand, three directors - Pascale Ferran, Cédric Klapisch, and Laurent Cantet - approached him about the lack of legal offerings for heritage films[11]. Nostalgic for the Ciné-club programs offered by French television until the 1990s, they discussed their difficulty in revisiting significant films from the history of cinema.

The principle of the project was thus established: filmmakers from around the world would choose 50 recommended films, and exclusive video bonuses would accompany the viewing of the works[12].

Website Launch edit

The site was launched on November 5, 2015, at the Gaîté-Lyrique in Paris, in the presence of Fleur Pellerin[13], who was the Minister of Culture at the time, along with filmmakers Pascale Ferran, Cédric Klapisch, Laurent Cantet, Agnès Varda, Christian Rouaud, Costa-Gavras, Michel Hazanavicius, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Céline Sciamma, Christophe Gans, and Laurent Vallet, President of the INA.

Subscription edit

On September 10, 2018, LaCinetek launched a subscription offer based on the principle of a selection of ten films chosen around a theme and available for one month. A cultural figure presents one of the ten films from each selection. Since September 28, 2023, the subscription offering has evolved. In addition to the monthly thematic selection, it includes retrospectives, curated selections, hidden gems, spotlights, short films, many accompanied by exclusive bonuses. This subscription is offered at the price of €4.99[14][15]

Opening in Germany and Austria edit

LaCinetek launched its website in Germany and Austria on February 10, 2019[16][17][18], in Berlin during the 69th edition of the Berlinale in the presence of directors Wim Wenders, Christoph Hochhäusler, Cédric Klapisch, Laurent Cantet, Jutta Brückner and Ula Stöckl. On this occasion, the Deutsche Kinemathek became the first non-French member of the association.
