Fallon, Nevada: Cancer Cluster

This news article writes

"Arsenic in the water, tungsten in the air, polonium in wells, underground atomic testing to the east - all have been reported by the media. The entry for "Fallon, Nevada" on Wikipedia, a popular online encyclopedia, mentions the leukemia cluster. It's no wonder some outsiders unfortunately perceive our community as unhealthy."

The entry in the Fallon, Nevada article lacks any footnotes and seemed like original research. Would you please review Fallon, Nevada: Cancer Cluster and footnote it and/or NPOV balance the article, if possible. Thanks. -- Jreferee t/c 14:16, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

There are inline citations to Steinmaus, which is acceptable referencing by wikipedia standards. Having said that, I do see that there could well be additional material relevant to the article which is lacking. I am contacting the Wikipedia:WikiProject Environment, Wikipedia:WikiProject Medicine, and Wikipedia:WikiProject Ecology for any input which they information they might have access to which may be relevant to the article. It is my hope that the attention of individuals who are more directly knowledgable about this subject may be of greater use than my own, unfortunately very limited, knowledge of this specific subject. Hello/Photo request

Hello Nevada Wikipedians. I am working on an article about the real-life Simpsons House in Henderson, Nevada. I live in Illinois so I was wondering if any Wikipedians in or near Henderson could obtain photographs of the house at 712 Red Bark Lane, it would be great if anyone had any pictures of it from before it was repainted ten years ago. Thanks in advance. IvoShandor 10:45, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I don't myself live in the state. However, I can try to find any photos out there in the various books which deal with the subject and hope for the best. Somehow, I think that there probably are at least a few out there. Anyone who actually lives in the area is more than welcome to check the local sources, which I think are probably going to be more complete than my own. John Carter 13:25, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
Flickr has a free (Creative Commons license) photo of both the outside and some interior shots here. Ivo is on Wikibreak, so not sure how urgent this is, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:13, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

Assessment completed

OK, all of the articles that are tagged for the project now have received an assessment. The next activity needs to be going through the article without an importance assigned. Note that I suspect that many of these will also need to be tagged as a part of the Las Vegas project. It would be nice if someone can also review all of the low importance articles. Many of these had so little material it was not possible to give them a higher importance. Maybe if someone has more information that is not in the articles, their importance can be raised. Generating stubs for mountain ranges from GNIS data - helpful or not?

I wanted to get a quick "sanity check" on some articles I've created. I wrote a program which uses USGS GNIS data to create stub article text for Nevada mountain ranges. I used it to fill in most of the mountain ranges of the Black Rock Desert region and then also some samples of other previously-redlinked entries from List of mountain ranges of Nevada.

For the ones at Black Rock, they also got added to Template:Black Rock Desert so they all interlink and look less sparse on info than for articles from other parts of Nevada that don't have a navbox. So, what are the opinions out there on WikiProject Nevada? Is it helpful to create the stubs that are outside the Black Rock Desert? I wanted to ask for some opinions before making more. Ikluft (talk) 01:19, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

OK, no response for more than a week... It looks like these mountain range stubs meet the guidelines at WP:STUB in stating unambiguously what the topic is, having an initial reference and setting initial categories. So discussion is still encouraged (including suggestions). But for now I'll interpret this as not having heard any complaints. (i.e. be WP:BOLD!) Ikluft (talk) 03:05, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
Here's an additional note of background info behind the question. The thing I was unsure about was whether others would accept or dislike that these stub articles have usually just one sentence of text. "blah Range is a mountain range in foo County." That's as much as the stub generator program knows from the GNIS data. But the infobox, coordinates, map and reference automatically generated as part of each seemed worth as much as another couple sentences. And indeed there have been no complaints so far. Ikluft (talk) 03:13, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

New WP Nevada project template

I have rewritten the project assessment infobox to use templates instead of coding everything. Makes it much easier to update. The only thing I did not add was the portal box for Las Vegas. It is currently in use at Talk:Las Vegas, Nevada. If no issues are reported in a few days, I'll replace the current template. This was modeled after the one for Australia which is much more complex. Vegaswikian (talk) 06:29, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

OK, doing the update now. Vegaswikian (talk) 05:46, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

GA review

I have asked for a GA review of the Lake Tahoe article. The request is currently on hold since the article has some significant but addressable problems. Since this article is a part of this project, maybe some additional editors can address the problems identified in the GA review. Vegaswikian (talk) 19:15, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

OK, I've done some edits in an effort to help the GA review. I'll keep doing so as more ideas come up. I hope they actually are helpful. Ikluft (talk) 22:27, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
I saw that Lake Tahoe failed its GA review, needing more work on references. So I would guess it remains a goal to help it along in that direction for the next attempt. Ikluft (talk) 16:38, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I believe so. All that needs to be cleaned up is the referencing. I think that the review comments were a little quick and misleading. I had been trying to do a reference a day type of thing to reformat and clean then up by converting the cite format which I believe was the problem. So for Lake Tahoe I believe that we only need to clean up the references and the get many more citations for the article. I have not found a source for the IDN number, I believe that is what its called, that we probably need for the journal citations. I guess we can continue to work on this and when we fill in the missing blanks on the citations renominate it. I 2was hoping for more help from the California and the Lakes projects since they apparently have more experience with this, but I don't think they were able to help out. The lake is still listed on the California project page. Vegaswikian (talk) 19:48, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

Upgrading Black Rock Desert to B Class

I've been updating the Black Rock Desert article toward the goal of upgrading it from an assessment of C Class to B Class. If anyone has suggestions, please either respond with them, or go ahead and add them. Or if it has reached that goal, could someone assess it? Ikluft (talk) 22:30, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

As an aside, I have proposed adding the b1-b5 criteria to the template. This should make it a bit easier to track changes like this by showing what criteria have been meet. Vegaswikian (talk) 06:16, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

B class checklist

I have added the B class checklist to all of the B and C class articles. For the existing B class articles, I took it on face value that they meet all criteria. For the C class articles I did not evaluate them for meeting any criteria. Using the check list, allows you to list the class as B in the template but the class will not change to B until all of the criteria have been marked as checked. Until that happens the article will show as being rated in C class. If anyone promotes an article to C class, they should include the checklist to allow editors to focus on areas needing work. So, if any of you have time, all of the C class articles need someone to check the articles against the criteria and mark those that meet (yes) or fail (no) the criteria. Vegaswikian (talk) 19:50, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

Nevada articles needing geographic coordinates

75 articles in Category:Nevada articles missing geocoordinate data do not have geographic coordinates. Coords are useful for making the article appear on Google Maps & many other mapping services; and they allow our users to click through to see the article subject location on a map. There's a short guide to on how to add geocodes to articles ... it really is very easy to do. I hope you'll take some time to ensure that Nevada is as well represented as it can be on wikipedia by fixing up the listed articles. thanks --Tagishsimon (talk) 00:38, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

mountain range stub articles done

Between late April and now, I added 213 stubs for Nevada mountain ranges. These articles were automatically generated from USGS GNIS data with a perl script I wrote for this purpose. I started out doing these for the mountains of the Black Rock Desert region - but the script worked for anywhere in the state. I have made changes to the process along the way to incorporate changes I saw others make to either the stub articles or the WikiProject tags on the talk pages. Now List of mountain ranges of Nevada has no more redlinks. Enjoy! Ikluft (talk) 10:07, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

GA Sweeps invitation

This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.

If any members are interested, please visit the GA sweeps page for further details and instructions in initiating a review. If you'd like to join the process, please add your name to the running total page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles from the worklist or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. With ~1,300 articles left to review, we would appreciate any editors that could contribute in helping to uphold the quality of GAs. If you have any questions about the process, reviewing, or need help with a particular article, please contact me or OhanaUnited and we'll be happy to help. --Happy editing! Review

Can you please review my new article Spice Market Buffet (Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino) and my expansion of article Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino? I recently went there in Las Vegas and have been using my knowledge of the place and my photographic skills to improve articles. Soon, I'll begin expanding Miricle Mile Shops which I already posted a photo for on the article.Hopefully I might get recognition from wikiprojects nevada and las vegas;)SchnitzelMannGreek. 02:50, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

You may want to read WP:RS. I'm not sure that the sites you are using pass muster. Also, I'm not convinced that this passes muster under WP:N. Is there a reason the article is not at Spice Market Buffet? Vegaswikian (talk) 05:28, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
Well, there is no article called Spice Market Buffet. I just created this. If you think it's for the best, I'll move the title to Spice Market Buffet. But it is notable for sure, however, you are right about the sources. Yet, they do offer information that they site. Most of the stuff I wrote was from my experience for I've been there many times.....but I tried to find sources that match.SchnitzelMannGreek. 14:00, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
If it is going to remain, then it should be moved. Also, notability will be an issue without reliable sources. Based on your comments, you might need to read WP:OR. While you did obtain a source for your information, that policy would be a good read. Also, you don't need to use talk back on project or article pages since most participants have the page on the watchlist. Vegaswikian (talk) 18:14, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
I went ahead and moved it. I'll work on the sources as well. However, I personally think that notability shouldn't be an issue. Another user agrees as well. I would be pissed if this article got deleted for I worked hard on it and it is concise and well layed out. It has all the information just needs better sources. Though I've seen other articles like greek salad that barely have sources --like only one source. And that is usually a recipe or blog. Why should this be different. This is an award winning and renouned buffet but it's hard to find "official" webpages of buffets/resturants because most are blogs/reviews-which help. The Golden Corral buffet has an article and it's hard to find official websites for and most are reviews--yet it has an article. Why should this be different...I posted the official link to it in "external links". I won't even image it deleted. Thanks for the suggestion of moving it, however.;)SchnitzelMannGreek. 18:47, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
In deletion debates, WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS is not a valid argument for keeping something else. If the item is not notable, then it should be deleted. That is why each article needs to assert notability on its own using reliable sources. The fact that it is difficult to find those sources can mean that the item really does not meet the notability requirements. When creating a new article, I like to find articles in at least two newspapers that are about the topic. Then I references these using {{cite news}}. That does a good job in preventing deletion challenges. Vegaswikian (talk) 22:04, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

I guess this is similar to when you said Spice Market Buffet wasn't notable but it is in terms of its award-winning, and renouned. "Climate change in Nevada" -article in need of attention

I came across Climate change in Nevada, and I feel there are some serious issues to be addressed with this article. There are no references to back up the not-very-plausible data, and I don't see how it could be anything other than original research. I have an impulse to simply delete the article, especially since the article was created by a used who has now been blocked; however, I will be fair and merely express my concern to others who are more knowledgeable. I would appreciate if someone else could look at the article to decide what needs to be done with it. Thanks. --Tea with toast (talk) 03:36, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Nevada State Library and Archives

Howdy. Hoping someone can help me with a little puzzle I've found. It looks like there used to be a stubbish article at Nevada state library and archives that was merged into Nevada in 2006. However, the current version of the article doesn't contain any mention of state library and archives, making the redirect inappropriate. Is the subject worthy on it's own article, or should it be a parapgraph in Nevada, or indeed has it been covered in another article I'm unaware of? Thanks. - TB (talk) 11:55, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Well, yes, you could write a notable article. Here is the text that was deleted:

The Nevada State Library and Archives (NSLA) serves as the foundation of Nevada democracy by providing full access to a range of information services that enhance the quality of life for all and center on creating a literate, educated and enlightened citizenry while supporting the best interest of the state of Nevada.

The Nevada State Library and Archives is the institutional memory of the state. It provides governments, agencies, businesses, libraries and individuals a full range of information services.

On the popular pages report, the top 25 pages are now C class or better. It would be nice to get a few more FA (Elvis is the only one the top 25), GA or A class articles in the highly viewed articles. Nevada articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Nevada articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

WikiProject cleanup listing

I have created together with Smallman12q a toolserver tool that shows a weekly-updated list of cleanup categories for WikiProjects, that can be used as a replacement for WolterBot and this WikiProject is among those that are already included (because it is a member of Category:WolterBot cleanup listing subscriptions). See the tool's wiki page, this project's listing in one big table or by categories and the index of WikiProjects. Svick (talk) 20:25, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. Please let leave a comment on the Portals talk page or let me know if you have any questions or ideas. --Kumioko (talk) 19:17, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

Suggestion for WikiProject United States to support WikiProject Nevada

Someone recently suggested that this project may be inactive or semi-active and that it might be beneficial to include it in the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States. After reviewing the project it appears that there has been no active discussions since sometime in late 2010 and very few edits made to the project page. I do realize that there are a number of active editors of the project who are actively working on Nevada related articles though and this may not be wanted or needed. Please feel free to contact me if there are any comments or questions. --Kumioko (talk) 20:27, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

This discussion has open open for 5 days without comment. Does anyone have any comments about this suggestion? --Kumioko (talk) 02:29, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
Include it in the list. YE Pacific Hurricane
Just because editors are not replying does not say this should be folded into the larger project. If it is not a problem and people are dealing with new articles and such, let it be. Vegaswikian (talk) 05:14, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
There is absolutely no doubt at all that editors are working on the articles and WPUS supporting this project will improve that not weaken it. Theres a few reasons why it would be beneficial. For one if knowone is replying to to questions here then it tells editors interested in the topic that they don't have any support and there on there own. This isn't a good way to foster new editors to the topic. Additionally, WPUS has a Newsletter, a collaboration space and a lot of bots working on the articles. The support will include all those things. Additionally, it will allow all the projects to have a standard set of things like article alerts, to do list, Recognized content, etc. With that said though, if the members aren't interested thats fine and Ill move on. I will let the members decide and act on that. --Kumioko (talk) 13:01, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
I think it might be a good idea. The article alerts, to do lists, etc. would be handy. But since I'm probably the newest and least experienced editors to this project I defer to the opinion of the other editors. Nevadaresident (talk) 12:38, 29 September 2011 (UTC)

WikiWomen's History Month

Hi everyone. March is Women's History Month and I'm hoping a few folks here at WP:Nevada will have interest in putting on events (on and off wiki) related to women's roles in Nevada's history, society and culture. We've created an event page on English Wikipedia (please translate!) and I hope you'll find the inspiration to participate. These events can take place off wiki, like edit-a-thons, or on wiki, such as themes and translations. Please visit the page here: WikiWomen's History Month. Thanks for your consideration and I look forward to seeing events take place! SarahStierch (talk) 00:27, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

LVRJ Archives

Well this is a revolting development.. The Las Vegas Review-Journal has moved their archives behind a paywall and broken most all their existing URLs. That makes 1,500 new dead links in Wikipedia. Toohool (talk) 00:37, 15 March 2013 (UTC)

First I heard of this. But not a good thing. I wonder if the foundation would support requesting free access to the archives for a limited number of editors. I surprised that it is only 1,500 dead links. Vegaswikian (talk) 05:20, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
The Wikipedia Library is a project to do that sort of thing, though focused on more general-interest sites. Both NewsBank and Factiva have the LVRJ archives, and it would be great if Wikipedia editors could get access to them, a la WP:HIGHBEAM. Lots of university and library networks have access to them.. but that's not much help for the vast majority of readers. Toohool (talk) 06:25, 15 March 2013 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Pride 2014

You are invited to participate in Wiki Loves Pride 2014, a campaign to create and improve LGBT-related content at Wikipedia and its sister projects. The campaign will take place throughout the month of June, culminating with a multinational edit-a-thon on June 21. Meetups are being held in some cities, or you can participate remotely. All constructive edits are welcome in order to contribute to Wikipedia's mission of providing quality, accurate information. Articles within Category:LGBT in the Americas may be of particular interest. You can also upload LGBT-related images by participating in Wikimedia Commons' LGBT-related photo challenge. Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

If you have any questions, want to report any bugs, or there are any features you would like to see that aren't currently available on the Toolserver tools, see the updated FAQ or contact me on my talk page. Mr.Z-bot (talk) (for Mr.Z-man) 05:18, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Relationship with WikiProject United States

People from a variety of WikiProjects have had concerns about the scope of WikiProject United States and its relationship with other WikiProjects. We have created an RFC and invite all interested editors to discuss it at: Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject United States#Mission statement for WikiProject United States. Thanks,

You are invited to participate in Wiki Loves Pride!

  • What? Wiki Loves Pride, a campaign to document and photograph LGBT culture and history, including pride events
  • When? June 2015
  • How can you help?
1.) Create or improve LGBT-related articles and showcase the results of your work here
2.) Upload photographs or other media related to LGBT culture and history, including pride events, and add images to relevant Wikipedia articles; feel free to create a subpage with a gallery of your images (see examples from last year)
3.) Contribute to an LGBT-related task force at another Wikimedia project (Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikivoyage, etc.)

Or, view or update the current list of Tasks. This campaign is supported by the Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group, an officially recognized affiliate of the Wikimedia Foundation. Visit the group's page at Meta-Wiki for more information, or follow Wikimedia LGBT+ on Facebook. Remember, Wiki Loves Pride is about creating and improving LGBT-related content at Wikimedia projects, and content should have a neutral point of view. One does not need to identify as LGBT or any other gender or sexual minority to participate. This campaign is about adding accurate, reliable information to Wikipedia, plain and simple, and all are welcome!

If you have any questions, please leave a message on the campaign's main talk page.

Thanks, and happy editing!

Suggestion

Hello all! I was curious if anyone else thought it might be a good idea to make a (nonbinding) guideline on how all the individual US state WikiProjects should organize themselves, to help standardize them. I originally put this suggestion in the WikiProject United States talk page, so feel free to look there if you're interested. It's pretty empty though; basically all they said was to see what each of the individual projects thought about it. Please tell me if you have any concerns with this idea; hopefully we can find a way for everyone to love it! Also, I'm new at making proposals, so please forgive me if I do anything silly. :) Hope that you like this idea! JonathanHopeThisIsUnique (talk) 04:56, 3 August 2015 (UTC)

US 50,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject United States/The 50,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more states than they might otherwise work on. If there's the interest I will start 1000 State Challenges like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of states regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for the US and your specialist/home state like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every state, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any state sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thankyou.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:20, 1 November 2016 (UTC)

2016 Community Wishlist Survey Proposal to Revive Popular Pages

Greetings WikiProject Nevada/Archive 1 Members!

This is a one-time-only message to inform you about a technical proposal to revive your Popular Pages list in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey that I think you may be interested in reviewing and perhaps even voting for:

If the above proposal gets in the Top 10 based on the votes, there is a high likelihood of this bot being restored so your project will again see monthly updates of popular pages.

Further, there are over 260 proposals in all to review and vote for, across many aspects of wikis.

Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.

Best regards, SteviethemanDelivered: 18:05, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

Popular pages report

We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject Nevada/Archive 1/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject Nevada.

We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:

  • The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
  • The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
  • The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).

We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject Nevada, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at m:User talk:Community Tech bot.

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:49, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Nomination of Portal:Las Vegas for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether Portal:Las Vegas is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The page will be discussed at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Portal:Las Vegas until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Humboldt Sink

Does anyone know how to find info on when the Humboldt Sink overflows through the Humboldt Drain into Carson Sink? The article said it hadn't done so since 1986, but that was added in 2004, and seems unlikely to be still true, especially this year. This would be a good year to get a photo of the drain, perhaps. Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? GA article being reassessed: The Killers

The Killers was reviewed and listed as a Good Article in 2008. (It has been tagged with sourcing concerns since Jan 2019.) I have done a GAR, and I feel that the article doesn't meet current GA criteria. The main contributors have been notified. Following the guidelines at Wikipedia:Good article reassessment, interested WikiProjects are being contacted as editing assistance may be needed to prevent the article being delisted. See Talk:The Killers/GA1 for more details. If no progress is made, and nobody expresses an interest in working on the article, it is likely to be delisted after seven days have passed. Help with article about David Copperfield (illusionist)

Hello. I’m hoping a member of this group can help out changes I’ve proposed to improve the David Copperfield (illusionist) article at Talk:David Copperfield (illusionist). Copperfield is a long-time prominent Nevada resident and his stage show has been important to the Las Vegas economy. I have a conflict of interest so would like an independent editor to evaluate the proposed edits. Thanks! MagicTech1902 (talk) 17:36, 22 September 2021 (UTC)

David Copperfield Article Help

Hi there. In February I proposed some updates to the David Copperfield article here. But the Request Edits Queue seems to be stalled right now, so I was wondering if an editor here might be interested in reviewing my proposals? (I can’t do it myself because of a COI.) Thanks very much. MagicTech1902 (talk) 17:12, 1 August 2022 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present.
