This thing is heinous

Mass spam messages should always be opt-in, not opt-out. This thing is completely backwards. And yes, I'm using "spam" as a general pejorative for anything that someone else has decided is so important that they need to shotgun blast it to the entire world because their pet cause is a special snowflake. -- Legalize (talk) 22:23, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

Is this a bot? - No its mass spaming

If this account is automatic, shouldn't it haver a username that reflects it as such? Also, why is it ignoring the "nobots" tag on my user page? Optimist on the run (talk) 18:50, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

@Optimist on the run: This account is not a bot in the normal sense, but rather a part of the MassMessage extension of MediaWiki, which is probably why it ignored your tag. It's a relatively new feature that allows any user with the "massmessage" user right to send mass messages through Special:MassMessage. If you want to opt-out of all mass messages through this feature, add your user talk page to the category Category:Opted-out of message delivery. Mz7 (talk) 21:46, 23 September 2016 (UTC)
So instead of delivering messages to people who care it spams everybody? Great invention ..Sicherlich Post 22:28, 21 November 2016 (UTC) yeah you can opt out; after you got the first message and you figure out who acutlly wrote to you ( not the person who signed the message). pretty much like spam; just configure your spamfilter and it's not issue
The messages should be from a named account, a point of contact if you feel, like I do, that the messages are spam Vicarage (talk) 23:48, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

Why did the "ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!" message get sent to me twice?

As the subject line header says, why did the "ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!" message get sent to my user talk page twice, just six minutes apart? I don't mind getting it once, but why twice? Is there some content difference between the two messages that I'm not seeing? —Lowellian (reply) 23:22, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

This was explained (briefly) at User_talk:Mdann52#MassMessage_distribution. --Pascal666 04:41, 22 November 2016 (UTC)

REQ: Can the delivery system exclude delivery to blocked users?

Hey all, my watchlist just got pounded by a trillion posts to users, many of whom are either temporarily or indefinitely blocked. As a longtime gnome, I've probably got thousands of user talk pages watchlisted. Can message delivery be limited to unblocked users, or at least to users who are not indeffed? Either approach would be an improvement I think. Thanks. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 05:16, 22 November 2016 (UTC)

Just because users are blocked or indeffed doesn't mean they can't keep up with areas of the project. If they're gone, I'd say just add Category:Opted-out of message delivery on there. Alternatively, we should look into excluding the bot from watchlists by default. Mdann52 (talk) 07:37, 22 November 2016 (UTC)
Indef–blocked people are not in good standing to do things such as opining on ArbCom nominees. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Loriendrew (talkcontribs) 22:56, 23 November 2016 (UTC)

Spam

Your 'MediaWiki message delivery' bot spammed my talk page, twice. Please respect the Template:nobots tag. Your bot is not an exception. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 146.198.217.114 (talk) 07:45, 22 November 2016 (UTC)

MassMessage targets are not subject to nobots, however you can opt of massmessages by following the directions. It also doesn't look like any messages were left at all on User talk:146.198.217.114. — xaosflux Talk 00:33, 26 November 2016 (UTC)

So this thing will just grow and grow

Yes, how does one unsubscribe? Jidanni (talk) 00:03, 26 November 2016 (UTC)

If you are referring to the "ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!" message - this was a one time message, there is nothing to unsubscribe from. — xaosflux Talk 00:35, 26 November 2016 (UTC)

Hi, this is user, Jhoven Sulla, voting for unblocked users, for registered users, i appreciate that :) i vote the users, instead of the list, before 4, December 2016, it seems like a multiple account but We can do it, the user i vote to unblocked, MarkHerson, Bucal, Calamba are the user account blocking by the other editors are list of blocking, thank you so muchJhoven Sulla (talk) 08:00, 3 December 2016 (UTC).

Criticism Deleted when Redirect Deployed

There were a bunch of complaints on the page that now redirects here that were removed by the person who supposedly "moved" the discussions to here. That is a pretty petty thing to do. If you're going to move the discussions, then move the discussions, but don't act as moderator at the same time -- Legalize (talk) 17:54, 8 December 2016 (UTC)

Is there any way to prevent mass messages from including nonfree files?

Right now, File:Noisebridge_logo.png appears on nearly 150 user talk pages, as a result of its inclusion in a mass message.

Not the first time I've seen this happening, and it takes some work to clean this up. The Big Bad Wolfowitz (aka Hullaballoo). Treated like dirt by many administrators since 2006. (talk) 20:19, 25 March 2017 (UTC)

Short of listing each unfree file on MediaWiki:Bad image list - which would max out it's capacity soon, I think - I don't think there is an inherent method. As for this specific case, tracking down the user(s) responsible and reminding them of WP:NFCC#9 would be the first step. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 21:06, 25 March 2017 (UTC)

archiving

Regarding archiving: for whatever reason, this page was set up with the requests as third-level headings (===), and since the archive bot archives second-level headings (and the associated contents), it won't archive individual requests. Perhaps the page can be restructured so requests are second-level headings? (And maybe as previously discussed the requests might be better placed on their own sub-page?) isaacl (talk) 16:43, 20 January 2018 (UTC)

The archive link is set to headerlevel = 3 - but it didn't seem to be working. — xaosflux Talk 16:48, 20 January 2018 (UTC)
I think a new page for requests would be good, but am concerned that it won't be watched much and requests could languish, would want to send WP:AN notice, and maybe a message to MMS'ers to add it to their watch routines. — xaosflux Talk 16:49, 20 January 2018 (UTC)
headerlevel isn't mentioned in User:Lowercase sigmabot III/Archive HowTo but it is a parameter for User:ClueBot III (I did forget about this parameter for ClueBot III). If third-level headings are archived then I suspect it won't be possible to introduce any new second-level headings to the page and have everything archive correctly. That's OK if that's how those managing the queue want it, but then I think separating out discussion to another page would be desirable. This page could be kept as the one for requests if preferred. isaacl (talk) 17:12, 20 January 2018 (UTC)

PLEASE DON'T USE BOLD IN SECTION TITLES!!!!!

...as was done here:[1]

If we allow one section to have more prominence with bold, it will start an arms race with editors using capital letters, exclamation points, color, font size, etc. to make their sections stand out from the clutter. --Guy Macon (talk) 20:05, 23 August 2018 (UTC)

@Guy Macon: that was 100% my fault and I completely agree with you. I had intended to italicize those words as the newsletter name, not bold it. I had already previewed and forgot the italics, but didn't preview again before I hit send. I noticed it right after sending but thought sending a bot out to correct it would be more intrusive. If you think it should be fixed after the fact now, I'll send Fluxbot out to correct the syntax error. — xaosflux Talk 00:15, 24 August 2018 (UTC)
I don't think it's worth the bother to fix them all. --Guy Macon (talk) 01:59, 24 August 2018 (UTC)

@Ariconte: Where is this newsletter from? It appears to be a few sentences rather than a template... it also should include information about how to opt-out of MMS messages in the future. Happy editing, WikiPancake 📖 06:18, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
@WikiPancake:The text is from Wikipedia:Meetup/Sydney. I just want to let the invite list know it is on. Is this not the correct tool??? Regards, Ariconte (talk) 06:33, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
@Ariconte: This is the right place if you're request a message to be sent to multiple users at once. However, all newsletters/alerts using mass messaging must have a notice that shows the directions about how to opt-out of future messaging, as many people decide to not receive the meetup newsletter after receiving it once, or if they quit the project. The newsletter should also be a template with enough information and notable enough to be sent out to mutliple users. WikiPancake 📖 06:39, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
You win, I give up. Ariconte (talk) 09:41, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
Note it is not necessary for the message to be a "template". Although it's convenient to put it in a standalone page, it's not a big hardship to copy and paste inline content from the request. isaacl (talk) 20:25, 10 September 2016 (UTC)

MMS Sender Note: There's a slight problem with the message -- because I copy+pasted the content of mass mailing, it didn't send out the nowiki marks with the message, meaning that instead of showing {{Usercheck-full}}, it shows:
Example (talk · message · contribs · global contribs · deleted contribs · page moves · user creation · block user · block log · count · total · logs · summary · email | lu · rfas · rfb · arb · rfc · lta · checkuser · spi · socks confirmedsuspected | rfar · rfc · rfcu · ssp | current rights · rights log (local) · rights log (global/meta) | rights · renames · blocks · protects · deletions · rollback · admin · logs | UHx · AfD · UtHx · UtE)
...which led to some confusion. To prevent this in the future, I suggest you to convert your message into a template -- it makes me and a lot of other MMs senders to send your message easily. Because some people already replied I won't revert it. Thanks, WikiPancake 📖 07:35, 16 October 2016 (UTC)

On hold Hi @Yunshui: The target lists are in the wrong format for this extension and will need to be converted before this can be used. I may be able to work on this later today, but anyone else is welcome to. — xaosflux Talk 12:43, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
The formatting is an "easy" tweak, however see below. — xaosflux Talk 12:54, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
On hold There appears to be more then a formatting issue - I split a few samples from list 1 to 1a for testing a small run, some of these are invalid targets, replying at the election coordination talk. — xaosflux Talk 12:50, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
We would prefer to only send the message to eligible voters who have edited in the last year (as specified here) but have been unable to come up with a suitable list in the available time. —DoRD (talk) 12:57, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
FWIW I have opposed doing this, as I think mass messaging about 10 times as many users as we intended to (and have consensus for) is basically spamming. (see http://spam.abuse.net/others/simplespam.shtml - "Spam is the same thing lots and lots of times.") Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 13:24, 28 November 2017 (UTC)

Request for mass message delivery: December 14, 2018

Would someone please deliver this WikiProject newsletter. This is the first time I've done a request so please let me know if I've done something incorrectly. The invite list is comprised of people who had previously been listed as active members. If there are future newsletters I would expect it to just go to the active members list.

Done Reidgreg (talk) 05:39, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
@Reidgreg: SO I'm guessing I formatted something on the list wrong because I don't see it on anyone's talk page. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 05:49, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
@Barkeep49: I just checked looks like they sent, the Mass Message feature queues our messages to send they aren't instantaneous. So there is a delay sometimes. --Cameron11598 (Talk) 18:10, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
@Barkeep49: It appears to have gone out at 5:56 UTC, about 20 minutes after I sent it to the queue. Although I don't remember seeing them in the queue when I checked, and there were no errors, so I assumed they'd been delivered. Sorry for any confusion and thank you for your diligence. – Reidgreg (talk) 20:05, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
@Cameron11598 and Reidgreg: Looks like it went. Thank you both. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 20:09, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
