WikiCup 2012 September newsletter

We're over half way through the final, and so it is less than a month until we know for certain our 2012 WikiCup champion. Grapple X (submissions) currently leads, followed by Sasata (submissions), Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and Casliber (submissions). However, we have no one resembling a breakaway leader, and so the competition is a long way from over. Next month's newsletter will feature a list of our winners (who are not necessarily only the finalists) and keep your eyes open for an article on the WikiCup in a future edition of The Signpost. The leaders are already on a par with last year's winners, but a long way from the huge scores seen in 2010. That said, a repeat of the competition from 2010 seems unlikely.

It is good to see that three-quarters of our finalists have already scored bonus points this round. This shows that, contrary to criticism that the WikiCup has received in the past, the competition does not merely incentivise the writing of trivial articles; instead, our top competitors are still spending their time contributing to high-importance articles, and bringing them to a high standard. This does a great service to the encyclopedia and its readers. Thank you, and good work!

The planning for next year's WikiCup is ongoing. Some straw polls have been opened concerning the scoring, and you can now sign up for next year's competition. As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Re:Tags not showing on Schillaci (horse)

These particular tags are supposed to be invisible on the articles and don't appear like the usual clean-up request maintenance tags. For example, {{Use Australian English}} will file the article under Category:Use Australian English and can be seen while editing, but regular Wikipedia readers don't necessarily need to see that. WikiCup 2012 October newsletter

The 2012 WikiCup has come to a close; congratulations to Cwmhiraeth (submissions), our 2012 champion! Cwmhiraeth joins our exclusive club of previous winners: Dreamafter (2007), jj137 (2008), Durova (2009), Sturmvogel 66 (2010) and Hurricanehink (2011). Our final standings were as follows:

• The good article award also goes to Grapple X (submissions), for 19 good articles in the second round.
• The list award goes to Muboshgu (submissions), for three featured lists in the final round.
• The topic award goes to Grapple X (submissions), for three good topics (with around 40 articles) in round 4.
• The did you know award goes to Cwmhiraeth (submissions), for well over 100 DYKs in the final round.
• The news award goes to ThaddeusB (submissions), for 10 in the news items in round 3.
• The picture award goes to Grandiose (submissions), for two featured pictures in round 2.
• The reviewer award goes to both Ruby2010 (submissions) (14 reviews in round 1) and Grandiose (submissions) (14 reviews in round 3).
• Finally, for achieving an incredible bonus point total in the final round, and for bringing the top-importance article frog to featured status, a biostar has been awarded to Cwmhiraeth (submissions).

Awards will be handed out in the coming days; please bear with us! This year's competition also saw fantastic contributions in all rounds, from newer Wikipedians contributing their first good or featured articles, right up to highly experienced Wikipedians chasing high scores and contributing to topics outside of their usual comfort zones. Kelly Kip

Tigerboy, Hello again. I know you are so good writing about thoroughbreds on Wiki. I know of no one better. I have a horse you may like to consider, one that is not mentioned often yet was one of the fastest horses I have ever seen. Kelly Kip

Was tough to keep sound, and of diminutive size, modestly bred, and trained by the old master, Allen Jerkens. Ran from 1996 to 2000.

Among his amazing accomplishments: Belmont 5F (:55.75) breaking his maiden 6/21/96. (still stands) Broke the Aqueduct track record for 6 furlongs (1:07.64) in the 1998 Bold Ruler H'Cap. Broke his own track record at Aqueduct in the 1999 Bold Ruler H'Cap (1:07.54 still stands)trouncing eventual Sprint Champion Artax in the process. Broke the track record at Finger Lakes for 6 furlongs (1:08.20) in the Finger Lakes Breeders Cup Stakes (still stands). Is the only horse in history to receive a Beyer speed number of 120 or more for 3 consecutive years. His only problem was staying sound. He was on the sidelines by the time the Breeders Cup races were held each year. (as mentioned above, he easily beat Artax, the 1999 BC Sprint winner). Earned over $1 million in purses. The fastest sprinter on the planet for almost 5 years, yet never won an award. As I said, he was a tiny colt who would wear down easily and had soundness issues.

I hope you will consider him for a future Wiki story.

Cheers. For some reason I missed Oriana off the linking when I first wrote the article. Regarding Phoenomenon, I've changed the spelling, which I see is how it's spelt on the Leger page as well. In the 1784 racing calendar they use Phœnomenon, and in the Turf register (1822) then use Phænomenon, neither of which are very good for creating an article I guess. Xtra Heat

Here's a filly sprinter that you may be interested in. Xtra Heat was a super fast little filly, and Eclipse Award winner (2001 3 Yr Old Filly title, even though she only sprinted). She already has a Wiki section but it is really not good at all. Very little about her. Strangely, most of the information covers some of her offspring. She had an outstanding record: 35 Starts, 26-5-2 and earnings of $2,389,635. Kelly Kip

Tiger... Another fine job. But one revision/correction is in order. The De Francis Dash at Laurel was a Grade I in 1998 when Kelly set the stakes record. In fact, it wasn't downgraded to a Grade II until 2011, when it returned to the Laurel Meet after a one year hiatus. The Dash was a Grade I from 1997 to 2009.

I never knew he sired quarter horses! But it makes sense, he was that kind of sprinter, even when it came to his diminutive size. Came out of the gate like a shot out of a cannon. I wish there were more videos of his races. You would have enjoyed watching that little sucker go.

Mongo

Tiger,

Here'a another good subject for consideration. Mongo raced against all the best thoroughbreds from 1962-64, including Carry Back and Kelso (he both beat and lost to them). He was equally formidable on dirt and grass. He won 6 G-1's (in those days, race with purses of $100,000 or more were the equivalent to G-1's) as well as 10 other stakes races. Named champion turf horse in 1963. The sparse existing entry in Wikipedia should be expanded upon.

Xtra Heat & Mongo

Mongo's win over Kelso in the 1963 Washington DC Int'l was a surprise to say the least.

I best remember Mongo from his two races against Carry Back in the 1962 & 63 Trenton H'Caps. CB (129lbs) lost by a nose to Mongo (118lbs) in 1962, his last race before heading to stud the first time. Then the following year, in CB's last race ever (went to stud for good) CB prevailed by 2 1/2 in one very emotional race while going off at 7-1 and getting 5 lbs from Mongo (124-119). I'll never forget watching that race on TV. I, like everyone else, though old CB was no longer the horse he once was and should never have been brought back to the races after his first retirement. You know the story! :)

Meteors

Whilst this is fine, I wouldn't recommend it, because the bot will never overrule you, even if it thinks you deserve bonus points -- and this year we have quite a selection for DYK submissions. Eyes and help

Huge dab shitstorm has started at WikiProject Equine. Someone wants to rename all the horse breed articles to "Breed X (horse)" instead of the current "Breed X horse" that we use to avoid confusion with the named individual horse articles. That editor suggests renaming all the individual horse articles from "Named horse X (horse)" to "Named horse X (racehorse)" to avoid confusion. I think that will hit over 1000 articles tagged by WikiProject horse racing. They argue that we have a WP:LOCALCONSENSUS that is not allowed, I argue that many breed names DO include "horse" or "pony" in breed society names. There is also another argument by same user over whether something is a breed or a landrace, i.e. we shouldn't call stuff "breeds", but that's a side issue and one fraught with OR as well. But figured the naming stuff could hit your project, so heads up. If you think it worth posting at WP Horse racing, go for it, I don't want to be canvassing on this, other than the couple of people I've given a heads up to due to their likely personal interest (you and out expert on British pony breeds). I would have thought that WP:COMMONNAME would apply to the "breed" names: and to the breed/landrace controversy for that matter. WikiCup 2013 January newsletter

Signups are now closed; we have our final 127 contestants for this year's competition. 64 contestants will make it to the next round at the end of February, but we're already seeing strong scoring compared to previous years. Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) currently leads, with 358 points. At this stage in 2012, the leader ( Grapple X (submissions)) had 342 points, while in 2011, the leader had 228 points. We also have a large number of scorers when compared with this stage in previous years. 12george1 (submissions) was the first competitor to score this year, as he was last year, with a detailed good article review. Some other firsts:

• 12george1 (submissions) was also the first to score for an article, with the good article Hurricane Gordon (2000). Again, this is a repeat of last year!
• Buggie111 (submissions) was the first to score for a did you know, with Marquis Flowers.
• Spencer (submissions) was the first to score for an in the news, with 2013 Houphouët-Boigny stampede.
• Status (submissions) was the first to score for a featured list, with list of Billboard Social 50 number-one artists.
• Adam Cuerden (submissions) was the first to score for a featured picture, with File:Thure de Thulstrup - L. Prang and Co. - Battle of Gettysburg - Restoration by Adam Cuerden.jpg.

Featured articles, portals and topics, as well as good topics, are yet to feature in the competition.

This year, the bonus points system has been reworked, with bonus points on offer for old articles prepared for did you know, and "multiplier" points reworked to become more linear. For details, please see Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. There have been some teething problems as the bot has worked its way around the new system, but issues should mostly be ironed out- please report any problems to the WikiCup talk page. Here are some participants worthy of note with regards to the bonus points:

• Ed! (submissions) was the first to score bonus points, with Portland-class cruiser, a good article.
• Hawkeye7 (submissions) has the highest overall bonus points, as well as the highest scoring article, thanks to his work on Enrico Fermi, now a good article. The biography of such a significant figure to the history of science warrants nearly five times the normal score.
• HueSatLum (submissions) claimed bonus points for René Vautier and Nicolas de Fer, articles that did not exist on the English Wikipedia at the start of the year; a first for the WikiCup. The articles were eligible for bonus points because of fact they were both covered on a number of other Wikipedias.

Also, a quick mention of The C of E (submissions), who may well have already written the oddest article of the WikiCup this year: did you know that the Fucking mayor objected to Fucking Hell on the grounds that there was no Fucking brewery? The gauntlet has been thrown down; can anyone beat it?

Hi Tigerboy, over at Wikipedia:Featured_article_candidates/William_Robinson_Brown/archive1, I am trying to figure out horse prices in 1918. I found a site stating an officer's horse might go for 75 pounds, but haven't found a good RS on horses of breeding quality, such as race horses. So, given your expertise in this area, can you point me to some race horse biographies or other sources that indicate the types of prices that English Thoroughbreds were selling for in that period? The consensus of experts is that when WR Brown paid Wilfrid Scawen Blunt 2727 pounds for 20 horses, he got them at fire sale prices, though that averages out to 136 pounds per horse, so still over the price of an officer's charger. Trying to find some higher-end horses to use as a comparison (that same year, Samuel Riddle paid $5000 for Man O' War as a yearling) Feel free to answer here or pop over there. Thanks. Most of the best Tb horses at the time were owner-bred, so they were rarely offered for sale. The European record for a yearling in 1918 was 10,000 guineas paid for Sceptre back in 1900. A top class yearling would typically set you back between 2,000 and 5,000 guineas: The Panther cost 3,6000 and Papyrus went for 3,500. Anything under 500 guineas was cheap: Grand Parade made only 470 as a foal. As for established horses, The Panther was offered for sale at 40,000 guineas at the end of his two-year-old season, which was considered double what anyone might have been expected to pay. I suppose you could add a sentence to the article saying "This was at a time when some owners were willing to pay xxxx for one promising Thoroughbred yearling..." Most of the prices quoted are referenced in the articles. I'll let you know if I find anything on average/median prices.  Tigerboy1966  19:26, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

Hello. Thanks for querying my action over the term 'thoroughbred'. According to the international edition of Funk & Wagnalls Standard Dictionary, the initial T of 'Thoroughbred is capitalised only when the following conditions apply:

• The word is a proper noun (NOT an adjective)
• The referent is "A horse whose ancestry is recorded in the English Stud Book, and which is therefore descended from one of three Eastern sires: the Byerly Turk, the Darley Arabian, or the Godolphin".

Tigerboy is correct. It is the longstanding consensus at WikiProject Equine that the breed "Thoroughbred" is a proper noun and hence, capitalized. See Thoroughbred. The use of the word "thoroughbred" to refer to a purebred animal is incorrect usage in general, and extraordinarily incorrect in horses, as "Thoroughbred-[insert other breed here] implies a crossbred animal such as the Anglo-Arabian. Tigerboy's edits were not correct. Yes, agreed, for WP purposes, capitalise it as a proper noun, but not as an adjective. 'Black Caviar is a Thoroughbred [noun]', may mean to some enthusiasts that 'B.C. is a (strictly defined particular class of) thoroughbred [adjective] horse'. So, if you must have it that way, go back and replace 'Thoroughbred horse' with just 'Thoroughbred' in every instance. Notwithstanding consensus of a very limited number of persons, this loosely-used peculiarity of equine jargon cannot entitle anyone to ignore the established conventions of standard English. If you still disagree and can find a good authority for your irregular usage, you might like to bring the Wictionary definitions of thoroughbred and Thoroughbred up to date for the rest of the world. Um, No. Black Caviar is a Thoroughbred. That is her breed. She is not a Gypsy Vanner horse (cough, cough), Camargue horse or Standardbred. As for not capitalizing when used as an adjective, in this example it is capitalized when referring to the breed of horse when used as a noun AND an adjective. Merriam-Webster also does not specify it should be not be capitalized when referring to the breed. So I think Funk & Wagnalls is out of touch (probably why they are now defunct). Bjenks is correct to point out that a local consensus counts for little on Wikipedia. However, I would maintain that the use of a capital in the phrase "Thoroughbred racehorse" is supported both by usage and by the source cited (Funk & Wagnalls Standard Dictionary). It's a proper noun being used attributively (a noun adjunct), and it refers to a descendent of one of the foundation sires. I should also point out that Standard English (note the capital "S" Bjenks!) is not a single set of conventions; it varies according to region and topic. WikiCup 2013 February newsletter

Round 1 is now over. The top 64 scorers have progressed to round 2, where they have been randomly split into eight pools of eight. At the end of April, the top two from each pool, as well as the 16 highest scorers from those remaining, will progress to round 3. Commiserations to those eliminated; if you're interested in still being involved in the WikiCup, able and willing reviewers will always be needed, and if you're interested in getting involved with other collaborative projects, take a look at the WikiWomen's Month discussed below.

Round 1 saw 21 competitors with over 100 points, which is fantastic; that suggests that this year's competition is going to be highly competative. Our lower scores indicate this, too: A score of 19 was required to reach round 2, which was significantly higher than the 11 points required in 2012 and 8 points required in 2011. The score needed to reach round 3 will be higher, and may depend on pool groupings. In 2011, 41 points secured a round 3 place, while in 2012, 65 was needed. Our top three scorers in round 1 were:

1. Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), primarily for an array of warship GAs.
2. Miyagawa (submissions), primarily for an array of did you knows and good articles, some of which were awarded bonus points.
3. Casliber (submissions), due in no small part to Canis Minor, a featured article awarded a total of 340 points. A joint submission with Keilana (submissions), this is the highest scoring single article yet submitted in this year's competition.

Other contributors of note include:

• Sven Manguard (submissions), whose Portal:Massachusetts is the first featured portal this year. The featured portal process is one of the less well-known featured processes, and featured portals have traditionally had little impact on WikiCup scores.
• Sasata (submissions), whose Mycena aurantiomarginata was the first featured article this year.
• Muboshgu (submissions) and Wizardman (submissions), who both claimed points for articles in the Major League Baseball tie-breakers topic, the first topic points in the competition.
• Toa Nidhiki05 (submissions), who claimed for the first full good topic with the Casting Crowns studio albums topic.

Featured topics have still played no part in this year's competition, but once again, a curious contribution has been offered by The C of E (submissions): did you know that there is a Shit Brook in Shropshire? With April Fools' Day during the next round, there will probably be a good chance of more unusual articles...

March sees the WikiWomen's History Month, a series of collaborative efforts to aid the women's history WikiProject to coincide with Women's History Month and International Women's Day. A number of WikiCup participants have already started to take part. The project has a to-do list of articles needing work on the topic of women's history. Those interested in helping out with the project can find articles in need of attention there, or, alternatively, add articles to the list. Those interested in collaborating on articles on women's history are also welcome to use the WikiCup talk page to find others willing to lend a helping hand. Another collaboration currently running is an an effort from WikiCup participants to coordinate a number of Easter-themed did you know articles. Contributions are welcome!

WikiCup 2013 March newsletter

We are halfway through round two. Pool A sees the strongest competition, with five out of eight of its competitors scoring over 100, and Pool H is lagging, with half of its competitors yet to score. WikiCup veterans lead overall; Pool A's Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) (2010's winner) leads overall, with poolmate Miyagawa (submissions) (a finalist in 2011 and 2012) not far behind. Pool F's Casliber (submissions) (a finalist in 2010, 2011 and 2012) is in third. The top two scorers in each pool, as well as the next highest 16 scorers overall, will progress to round three at the end of April.

Today has seen a number of Easter-themed did you knows from WikiCup participants, and March has seen collaboration from contestants with WikiWomen's History Month. It's great to see the WikiCup being used as a locus of collaboration; if you know of any collaborative efforts going on, or want to start anything up, please feel free to use the WikiCup talk page to help find interested editors. As well as fostering collaboration, we're also seeing the Cup encouraging the improvement of high-importance articles through the bonus point system. Highlights from the last month include GAs on physicist Niels Bohr ( Hawkeye7 (submissions)), on the European hare ( Cwmhiraeth (submissions)), on the constellation Circinus ( Keilana (submissions) and Casliber (submissions)) and on the Third Epistle of John ( Cerebellum (submissions)). All of these subjects were covered on at least 50 Wikipedias at the beginning of the year and, subsequently, each contribution was awarded at least three times as many points as normal.

Wikipedians who enjoy friendly competition may be interested in participating in April's wikification drive. While wikifying an article is typically not considered "significant work" such that it can be claimed for WikiCup points, such gnomish work is often invaluable in keeping articles in shape, and is typically very helpful for new writers who may not be familiar with formatting norms.

Unlinking

In line with WP:OVERLINK, I removed links to "names of major geographic features and locations" (such as United States, United Kingdom, Ireland), and "common units of measurement" (such as metres). Links are excessive if they don't provide any benefit to the reader. There cannot be a single WP reader in the entire world who needs a link to explain what is meant by the 'United States'. Just about the only place I would expect to see that link is in articles about basic world geography.

I doubt that any reader of these articles would be in doubt about the meaning of 'pound' in this context, but I would be perfectly happy to see a metric equivalent included as well. Colonies Chris (talk) 22:05, 26 April 2013 (UTC).

In fact, today's FA doesn't link 'Welsh/Wales' in the lead or in the main body of the article, only in the infobox; and personally I would have left it unlinked there too as the box already carries links to more specific units Swansea and Glamorgan, so it's trebly superfluous. There's never going to be full agreement about what constitutes a 'major' geographic location, but our imagined general reader is a person of normal intelligence and some intellectual curiosity, not someone who needs 'US' or 'UK' explained.

As for weights - the link to 'pounds' alone is not specific enough anyway, as US and UK pounds differ; there is a particular need to clarify this in an article about an American horse such as Nuclear Debate, described running in a British race; a metric conversion would clarify this and benefit of the rest of the world who prefer metric. WikiCup 2013 April newsletter

We are a week into Round 3, but it is off to a flying start, with Sven Manguard (submissions) claiming for the high-importance Portal:Sports and Portal:Geography (which are the first portals ever awarded bonus points in the WikiCup) and Cwmhiraeth (submissions) claiming for a did you know of sea, the highest scoring individual did you know article ever submitted for the WikiCup. Round 2 saw very impressive scores at close; first place Casliber (submissions) and second place Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) both scored over 1000 points; a feat not seen in Round 2 since 2010. This, in part, has been made possible by the change in the bonus points rules, but is also testament to the quality of the competition this year. Pool C and Pool G were most competitive, with three quarters of participants making it to Round 3, while Pool D was the least, with only the top two scorers making it through. The lowest qualifying score was 123, significantly higher than last year's 65, 2011's 41 or even 2010's 100.

The next issue of The Signpost is due to include a brief update on the current WikiCup, comparing it to previous years' competitions. This may be of interest to current WikiCup followers, and may help bring some more new faces into the community. We would also like to note that this round includes an extra competitor to the 32 advertised, who has been added to a random pool. This extra inclusion seems to have been the fairest way to deal with a small mistake made before the beginning of this round, but should not affect the competition in a large way. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please feel free to contact one of the judges.

A rules clarification: content promoted between rounds can be claimed in the round after the break, but not the round before. The case in point is content promoted on 29/30 April, which may be claimed in this round. Oxbow for GA?

Hi Tigerboy, want to see if we now have Oxbow (horse) ready for a GA run? I have two cn tags yet to fix and won't cry if they have to be tossed, plus I'd like to find out how tall the horse is for the stats section, but other than that, I think I toned down Craigld's breathless (but very entertaining) sportswriter prose and found RS sources for almost everything. At this point I think it's ready for a fresh set of critical eyes, then I'd like to co-nom it for GA. Feel free to cast a critical eye, I've now survived a solo FA run and got me a WP:FOUR award for an article so I'd like to think that I'm ready to take the heat from any solid WP reviewer. Oxbow redux

Blacklock

Yes, you're right of course, I probably should have put that in when I first wrote the article. Anyway, I've basically added a short phrase at the start of each season, so I think it's clear now when he became know as Blacklock. Regarding Orville and Walton's first race, I do kind of like writing about bits like that. As he is a pro-boxer either he is an Irish or British boxer, entirely depending on which pro-association he boxers for (by definition of purely sporting nationality). WikiCup 2013 June newsletter

We are down to our final 16: the 2013 semi-finals are upon us. A score of 321 was required to survive round 3, further cementing this as the most competitive WikiCup yet; round 3 was survived in 2012 with 243 points, in 2011 with 76 points and in 2010 with 250 points. The change may in part be to do with the fact that more articles are now awarded bonus points, in addition to more competitive play. Reaching the final has, in the past, required 573 points (2012, a 135% increase on the score needed to reach round 4), 150 points (2011, a 97% increase) and 417 points (2010, a 72% increase). This round has seen over a third of participants claiming points for featured articles (with seven users claiming for multiple featured articles) and most users have also gained bonus points. However, the majority of points continue to come from good articles, followed by did you know articles. In this round, every content type was utilised by at least one user, proving that the WikiCup brings together content contributors from all corners of the project.

Round 3 saw a number of contributions of note. Figureskatingfan (submissions) claimed the first featured topic points in this year's competition for her excellent work on topics related to Maya Angelou, the noted American author and poet. We have also continued to see high-importance articles improved as part of the competition: Ealdgyth (submissions) was awarded a thoroughly well-earned 560 points for her featured article Middle Ages and 102 points for her good article Battle of Hastings. Good articles James Chadwick and Stanislaw Ulam netted Hawkeye7 (submissions) 102 and 72 points respectively, while 72 points were awarded to Piotrus (submissions) for each of Władysław Sikorski and Emilia Plater, both recently promoted to good article status. Collaborative efforts between WikiCup participants have continued, with, for example, Casliber (submissions) and Sasata (submissions) being awarded 180 points each for their featured article on Boletus luridus.

Though brung up within walking distance of Aintree racecourse I know nothing of racing, or what might be of interest to you. The Times obit of James White mentions other horses. Whether that is of use to you I know not, but this is what The Times said (ref: "Mr. James White", The Times, 30 July 1927, p. 11):

Mr. White first came into notice when his colours, pale blue and khaki hoops, were carried by that good horse, Irish Elegance, who won the July Cup at Newmarket in 1918. As a four-year-old he won the Salford Borough Handicap with 9st 9lb. on his back, and achieved the greatest victory of his career by easily winning the Royal Hunt Cup with 9st 11lb. Later in the season Irish Elegance won the Portland Handicap at Doncaster, carrying 10st. 2lb. Being out of a half-bred mare, Irish Elegance was not eligible for inclusion in the Stud Book, and as a stallion proved a failure. Quite recently he changed hands for a very small sum. Another good horse owned by Mr. White was Ivanhoe, who won the Cesarewitch in 1919, and Mr. White purchased Sir Berkeley for 7,000 guineas in the hope of winning the Cambridgeshire also, but Sir Berkeley proved a failure. It was in 1910 that Mr. White purchased Pharemacic as a yearling for 2,600 guineas. This filly won each of her eight races as a juvenile and won two races as a four-year-old. Another good horse of his was Granely, who won his only race as a juvenile, and the Lincolnshire Handicap in 1922 as a four-year-old ridden by S. Donoghue.

Actually, no, SL93, the DYK standard is that everything in the HOOK must be verified. WP:V is desired, but not to the point of derailing a DYK if someone doesn't do a WP:POPE on every sentence. DYKs are new articles, not featured articles. It takes months to polish up an article to FA standard, DYKs have to be submitted within 5 days of creation. Going through racehorse articles you've created, I noticed that sometimes you pipe the link to a course article (e.g. York Racecourse|York) and sometimes leave it as the full name. I haven't changed these as I'm not sure if you have a method, but if you haven't I reckon it would be better to definitively go one way or the other, what do you think. Thanks for raising this. I think the unpiped version is more encyclopedic and I will try to favour it in future. It's just that sometimes the piped version gives a better flow, especially where more than one course is mentioned in a sentence. For instance "In the early part of 1889 he was beaten in races at York Racecourse, Doncaster Racecourse and Thirsk Racecourse" sounds a bit clumsy to me. Tigerboy1966  20:47, 22 July 2013 (UTC)

We're halfway through this year's penultimate round, and the competition is moving along well. Pool A's Sasata (submissions) currently leads overall, while Pool B's Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) is second. Both leaders are WikiCup veterans, and both have already scored over 600 points this month. If the round were to end today, Miyagawa (submissions), with 274 points, would be the lowest-scoring participant to make it through. This indicates that participants will need a score comparable to last year's (573, the highest ever) to qualify for the final. The high scores this year are a testament both to the quality of participants and to the increased focus on significant content (eligible for bonus points) in this year's competition. So far this round, both Sasata and Cwmhiraeth (submissions) have made up over half of their score through bonus points, with, for example, high importance FA koala earning Sasata a total of 440 points (from a multiplier of 4.4) and high-importance GA sea earning Cwmhiraeth a total of 216 points (from a multiplier of 7.2). Other articles on important topics submitted this round include a featured article on the Norman conquest of England by Ealdgyth (submissions), and good articles on Nobel laureate in literature Henryk Sienkiewicz, Nobel laureate in physics Hans Bethe, and the noted Japanese aircraft carrier Hiryū. These articles are by Piotrus (submissions), Hawkeye7 (submissions) and Sturmvogel_66 respectively.

Noticed 2012 Florida Derby winner Take Charge Indy doesn't have an article. Interested? (or is someone else at WP Horse racing the guru of the fast start-class racehorse bio?) Another A.P. Indy son out of a race-winning Deputy Minister granddaughter. His recent win is the Alysheba stakes, [1] Another "injured Grade I winner makes comeback" story: ([2] and it appears they are pointing him to the Breeder's Cup Classic [3]. Be fun to have articles on the Classic contenders by the time of the race (early November) My own plate is a bit full as I have Paynter up for GA, but thought I'd toss it out there... interested or shall I post at WP horse racing? Thanks for the suggestion. If I haven't got an article up by Monday then please throw it open. My favoured source Racing Post sometimes misses out some NA races but they has TCI with a 13: 3-4-2 record, which tallies with equineline, so it's doable for me. It will depend on the "King George" result. Cirrus des Aigles and Trading Leather will need updating whatever happens, but a win for Hillstar or Novellist would mean a new article. If Red Cadeaux wins I'll be out of action for a while as the horse has run prominently in dozens of top races and is overdue for an article anyway. Well, if we aren't jinxing them by doing their writeups, (grin) do you wanna do up Verrazano (horse)? He won the Haskell, (probably would have blown away Oxbow even if he hadn't been hurt) which is Grade I, and is, I think, almost undefeated other than his completely dismal performance in the Kentucky Derby. He's going to be the next big rival to Orb and Palace Malice in the Travers now that Oxbow is probably out. You know, what struck me was the same jockey was on Take Charge Indy and Oxbow, possibly saved the life of the one and the career of the other by acting quickly to get them out of trouble, but Oxbow's trainer first said the jockey "protected" Oxbow, then whined that he "overreacted." Verrazano looks a v. promising article subject: I already had his drf page saved to favourites. The Racing Post practically built an altar after his Haskell win, getting the words "spectacular", "romp", "commanding", "slammed" and "cruised" into the first two paragraphs,[4] and rating the performance better than Novellist's King George win. As for Oxbow: Stevens was right Lukas was wrong: that simple. The whole injury business is very troubling, especially after last year when all three triple crown winners were finished as racehorses by mid-June. For some reason, WP has blacklisted Horse Racing Nation as a web site, but I was amused by their headline: "Verrazono wins, hyperbole erupts." LOL! For that reason among others, Palace Malice now simply MUST be my pick in the Travers! (presuming Oxbow doesn't run, and I bet he won't) But here is what I find really interesting: Both Verrazano and Palace Malice are only now coming into their own. It's been a long argument in the USA that we run horses too young. What do you think? Does our racing of 2-year olds and early spring Triple Crown series lead to value early maturing but fragile horses that break down young over the better animals with more staying power? And yes, I'm afraid that Lukas was initially gracious with his return to the spotlight, but now he's reverting to being a jackass as usual... sigh... May have to go buy more popcorn. Will be interesting to see what horse Stevens winds up riding in the Breeder's Cup Classic (which is the one race he's never won, so you know he has to want it bad...) I don't think there's anything wrong with running TB horses hard in their early careers, but, especially in the USA, people aren't breeding the horses to cope. Look at the pedigrees of the TC contenders and you keep seeing names like Mr P (sprinter), Danzig (unsound), Storm Cat (peaked at 2) and many similar types. Unfortunately, the US racing program actively discourages stamina: the Belmont is the only Grade I dirt race run at a distance beyond 10 furlongs. The irony is that Sadler's Wells and Sunday Silence, the two best sires of sound, stamina-endowed horses in the last quarter of a century were both American-bred. As for the BC Classic, I'm just hoping they let Wise Dan take his chance. Verrazano should be up tomorrow. Tigerboy1966  20:58, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

These Awesome Again x daughters of Cee's Song horses are surprisingly durable horses compared to a lot ofUS Thoroughbreds, wouldn't you say? No kidding. And that's about what the vet bill is going to be, too! It amazes me what they can do with these horses nowadays. However, on a similar note, they saved Paynter (horse) with abdominal surgery and rapid intervention when he foundered, and he has returned to racing (no broken leg, though!) so they've clearly gotten good at avoiding the complications of a broken leg that did in Barbaro - (remember, they fixed his broken leg, it was the laminitis that got him). I find it interesting that St. Nich isn't in a sling; wonder if the pin and the cast will make it unnecessary or what?? Montanabw^(talk) 18:47, 3 August 2013 (UTC)

If Little Mike wins it will definitely mean a new article: he is well overdue. I will be err "rooting" (getting to grips with AmE) for Mull of Killough who is a lovely old horse. The Million was briefly the biggest race in the world: I did Tolomeo (horse) a few days ago and have Teleprompter (horse) in my sights. The 80s were fun. I bracketed the decade by picking the Kentucky Derby winners in 80 and 81 and again in 88 and 89. Of course, I'm a sucker for picking fillies and woman jockeys - mostly because I want to support the girls, so I suppose I can only claim genius picks for the other two... heh. And in the Million, for that reason I have to put my money (well, I'm not betting money, but if I were ...) on Rosie. (Really, it's completely illogical for grown men to be jockeys at all, they have to abuse themselves so much to stay light, while lots of women are kind of short and can keep the weight off much easier... at least until they are about 35 or so...) Watching the racing today on Channel 4 today I had to listen to a commentator describing one of the female riders as "a Victoria Beckham lookalike, whilst a woman who had won a 1000km endurance race in Mongolia was subjected to questions about the dress she was wearing. If you don't mind me joining in the conversation, a few thoughts on the above....Progressive horse, Dank - saw her win at Ascot last summer. A UK winner at Arlington, and a US winner at Deauville today too courtesy of No Nay Never. Channel 4 Racing - still some way off the joining the rest of us in the 2010s really. WikiCup 2013 August newsletter

This year's final is upon us. Our final eight, in order of last round's score, are:

1. Hawkeye7 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer who has contributed on topics of military history and physics, including a number of high-importance topics. Good articles have made up the bulk of his points, but he has also scored a great deal of bonus points. He has the second highest score overall so far, with more than 3000 points accumulated.
2. Casliber (submissions), another WikiCup veteran who reached the finals in 2012, 2011 and 2010. He writes on a variety of topics including botany, mycology and astronomy, and has claimed the highest or joint highest number of featured articles every round so far this year. He has the third highest score overall, with just under 3000 points accumulated.
3. Cwmhiraeth (submissions), 2012 WikiCup champion, who writes mostly on marine biology. She has also contributed to high-importance topics, seeing huge numbers of bonus points for high-importance featured and good articles. Previous rounds have seen her scoring the most bonus points, with scoring spread across did you knows, good articles and featured articles.
4. Sasata (submissions), a WikiCup veteran who finished in second place in 2012, and competed as early as 2009. He writes articles on biology, especially mycology, and has scored highly for a number of collaborations at featured article candidates.
5. Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), the winner of the 2010 competition. His contributions mostly concern Naval history, and he has scored a very large number of points for good articles and good article reviews in every round. He is the highest scorer overall this year, with over 3500 points in total.
6. Ealdgyth (submissions), who is competing in the WikiCup for the second time, though this will be her first time in the final. A regular at FAC, she is mostly interested in British medieval history, and has scored very highly for some top-importance featured articles on the topic.
7. Miyagawa (submissions), a finalist in 2012 and 2011. He writes on a broad variety of topics, with many of this year's points coming from good articles about Star Trek. Good articles make up the bulk of his points, and he had the most good articles back in round 2; he was also the highest scorer for DYK in rounds 1 and 2.
8. Adam Cuerden (submissions) has previously been involved with the WikiCup, but hasn't participated for a number of years. He scores mostly from restoration work leading to featured picture credits, but has also done some article writing and reviewing.

We say goodbye to eight great participants who did not qualify for the final: Piotrus (submissions), Figureskatingfan (submissions), ThaddeusB (submissions), Dana boomer (submissions), Status (submissions), Ed! (submissions), 12george1 (submissions), Calvin999 (submissions). Having made it to this stage is still an excellent achievement, and you can leave with your heads held high. We hope to see you all again next year. Signups are now open for the 2014 WikiCup, which will begin on 1 January. All Wikipedians, whatever their interest or level of experience, are warmly invited to participate in next year's competition.

This last month has seen some incredible contributions; for instance, Cwmhiraeth's Starfish and Ealdgyth's Battle of Hastings—two highly important, highly viewed pages—made it to featured article status. It would be all too easy to focus solely on these stunning achievements at the expense of those participants working in lower-scoring areas, when in fact all WikiCup participants are doing excellent work. A mention of everything done is impossible, but here are a few: Last round saw the completion of several good topics (on the 1958, 1959 and 1962 Atlantic hurricane seasons) to which 12george1 had contributed. Calvin999 saw "S&M" (song), on which he has been working for several years, through to featured article status on its tenth try. Figureskatingfan continued towards her goal of a broad featured/good topic on Maya Angelou, with two featured and four good articles. ThaddeusB contributed significantly to over 20 articles which appeared on the main page's "in the news" section. Adam Cuerden continued to restore a large number of historical images, resulting in over a dozen FP credits this round alone. The WikiCup is not just about top-importance featured articles, and the work of all of these users is worthy of commendation.

Not sure if you "need" new article ideas, but in the USA we have a couple of tough mares/fillies heading for a showdown: Princess of Sylmar, ([5]) winner of the Kentucky Oaks and 4th nationally in money won, (ahead of Palace Malice) who is likely to go up against Royal Delta this fall. Sort of this year's equivalent of a matchup between Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta -- Except that those two never met, I don't think(?) while Princess and Royal Delta just might. Well I bought some old Timeform annuals on ebay recently so I have no shortage of ideas for articles: I'm on a sort of mid-to-late 1980's pig-out at the moment. Princess of Sylmar does seem to be the big three-year-old filly in the US although she hasn't received much coverage over here as the Racing Post to have a massive crush on Dreaming of Julia. Three Grade I wins definitely passes the notability threshold. I must confess that her sire and damsire are completely unknown to me, which should make writing the article more interesting. It's been a horrible article for ages. I deleted a bunch of copyvio stuff from it back in my early days on WP. I have gone back and added categories and taken out some peacock nonsense like "a dominant force in the world of world racing" bleh!. We should do up a humor page called "horses alleged to walk on water", sort of like my User:Montanabw/List of horse breeds promoters claim "truly primitive bred pure since Adam and Eve" page. LOL! I do like the fun people are having with naming his offspring, though, my favorite name at the moment being a three-year-old named Fear the Kitten. the North American stallion that is interesting to me is Awesome Again. We might also want to look into an article on Cee's Song, dam and granddam of champions (Tiznow, etc...) lots of very good full siblings from her cross with Cee's Tizzy. It's going to be an entertaining Breeder's Cup

Will Take Charge won the Pennsylvania Derby, Wise Dan won the Woodbine, Game On Dude, now nicknamed "GOD" or "G.O.D." of course won the Pacific Classic. I think Wise Dan runs in the turf mile, but the other two will be in the Classic. USA Horse of the Year will be a hot competition too. After an interesting summer, it's shaping up to be a very fun fall. Fillies/Mares will also have many hot contenders, at least if the Princess and Royal Delta both show up to challenge Beholder. Things are certainly warming up nicely. Wise Dan is probably the best horse in North America, but I can't see them giving him another HOY award if he just sticks to turf miling, a discipline in which he has absolutely nothing left to prove. If there's a European to watch out for in the BC its Declaration of War who has a pedigree that makes you wonder why they bother running him in Europe a it's all DIRT + SPEED. Over-specialisation has certainly done the BC no favours, by diluting the quality of individual race. A horse like Elusive Kate has a choice of at least four races, and seven if you count the sprints. And exactly what is the BC Marathon for? Apart from the Belmont, a mile and a half on dirt is an obsolete event. Over-specialisation is not a problem in Australia, where a race like the Underwood Stakes attracts sprinters, milers, middle-distance runner and out-and-out stayers. In Europe it's used a an excuse for beaten horses. Aidan O'Brien even uses it as an excuse for winners: whenever one of his horses wins a middle distance race he's quickly on the mic with "Listen, this horse has so much speed, he's really a miler". AO'B would sell his teeth for a BC Classic winner, having had several embarrassing flops and two near misses with Giant's Causeway and Henrythenavigator. If they want to run more mile and a half races, they should do that with Arabians; They are going to add an Arabian horse race to the Breeder's Cup card on the first day. (I think Sheikh Mohammed put up the money.) This could go if someone with a spine took it over -- Some genius thought that bettors don't like long races (I have no clue, what's your take? I mean, no one is going to shorten the Kentucky Derby, and Quarter Horses aren't going to replace Thoroughbreds any time soon...though they do have some big purse races over here... ) and so most Arabs run at a mile over here -- and in doing so, average 8 seconds slower than Thoroughbreds, and hence making them look like a joke. They need to do way longer races, just like Quarter Horses do way shorter races. In the countries where they are raced more regularly, races of up to 2-1/2 miles used to be common. But arrgh. No one here wants to do anything interesting or creative with horses, they treat them like they're something boring that has to be jazzed up with things like rock concerts in the infield... does the UK have similar problems? Back in the good old days, before our nations were mistakenly divided after some silly squabbles over taxes and tea, a two mile race was considered a sprint. The four-mile Beacon course at Newmarket only came into being because some speed-obsessed owners and breeders objected to the original eight-mile Long Course. Anyone who thinks that Long-Distance racing can't appeal to the public should take a look at the UK, where National Hunt racing is at least a popular as flat racing. Races are of between 2 and 4 miles and typically pit Thoroughbreds against Selle Francais, AQPS and half-breds. Tigerboy1966  17:47, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

In 30 days, we will know the identity of our 2013 WikiCup champion. Cwmhiraeth (submissions) currently leads; if that lead is held, she will become the first person to have won the WikiCup twice. Sasata (submissions), Hawkeye7 (submissions)—who has never participated in the competition before—and Casliber (submissions) follow. The majority of points in this round have come from a mix of good articles and bonus points. This final round is seeing contributions to a number of highly important topics; recent submissions include Phoenix (constellation) (FA by Casliber), Ernest Lawrence (GA by Hawkeye7), Pinniped, and red fox (both GAs by Sasata).

The did you know (DYK) eligibility criteria have recently changed, meaning that newly passed good articles are accepted as "new" for did you know purposes. However, in the interests of not changing the WikiCup rules mid-competition, please note that only articles eligible for DYK under the old system (that is, newly created articles or 5x expansions) will be eligible for points in this year's WikiCup. We do, however, have time to discuss how this new system will work for next year's competition; a discussion will be opened in due course. I've been curious about the impact of jet lag on horses, seems not a lot of time between the 19th and Nov 1...? Also wonder about climate differential; even USA east coasters whine about shipping west. The showdown is set

It probably wasn't actually a surprise, but the Princess is confirmed for the Breeders' Cup against Royal Delta. Oh yeah! (rubbing hands...) And we cannot underestimate Beholder (horse) who is running on her home track, hot off of two wins. (Won the Grade I Zenyatta Stakes and Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies in 2012, second in the Oaks, also needs an article, hint, hint...) I think I'm almost looking forward to this race more than the Classic. And by the way, if you do an article on Beholder, I'll dab Beholder and fight to keep it there! LOL! No use asking me about Trifecta: I gave up betting when I realised that I tended to back the horse I wanted to win, rather than the horse that should win, which is a sure-fire way to empty your wallet. Beholder is definitely notable, with 4 G1 wins and an Eclipse award. I can't promise anything as I am having some health issues atm and may need to spend some time in hospital. Also, should The Fugue take on the boys in the Turf or stick to fighting it out with the girls (she entered both)? That's the biggest gap in editing I've had for about 2 years. Explanantion in email. I have really fancied DoW for the classic for ages and I think he is a very strong contender. The Dude does best when he's able to boss a race and set a "sensible" pace, but the classic is likely to be run at a scorching pace from the start. Both of Europe's classic winners, Arcangues and Raven's Pass won on their US/dirt debut: DoW has won on synthetic in Europe. Unlike some British handlers, Dank's trainer, Michael Stoute is never squeamish about running his horses on meds in the US, adopting a "When in Rome..." approach. Starting to think that Close Hatches could spring an upset in the Ladies', especially if RD and Beholder get into a duel, but that will probably be past my "recovering invalid" bedtime. Watch out for the Euros in the Juvenile Turf races: I do like the look of Outstrip. Tigerboy1966  20:55, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

Hmmm

Noticed we have an editor on MMM who is either the owner of the horse or someone pretending to be the owner of the horse. They removed some cited material and inserted some promotional material. I reverted but kept the correction to the horse's current ownership. I think it wise to be careful with this new editor, whoever they are, as I think they are acting in good faith and COULD be the horse's connections... (In a post race interview, Patti Reeves said something about setting up MMM's facebook page, so it might really be her). Anyway, I want to be careful not to bite. I wouldn't worry too much. When a horse gets suddenly famous beyond the racing world, the article will attract a lot of attention from enthusiastic and well-meaning fans, some of whom may have a close link with the horse. I should think it will blow over with no long-term issues (the exception is of course Secretariat, whose vaguely creepy acolytes never give up and never compromise). btw I caught the big race of Horse Racing Radio Network, which is a great alternative when you can't get live TV coverage, and the callers tend to focus on telling you what's happening rather than attempting to add "color". Tigerboy1966  21:46, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

1983 Arc

Would you mind having a look at 12th place in your new article about the 1983 Arc? Ian Balding's a great man I'm sure but I doubt he'd be up to finishing 12th in a group one race himself!! What amused me was that Balding's name appeared in the "horse" column instead of Diamond Shoal- I had a vision of him lolloping around Longchamp with all these horses around him, maybe wearing a sheepskin noseband! 1983 Derby done, always happy to flick through your articles and pick out any minor bits and pieces. IB would probably have run the race on foot for a bet if there was a crate of champagne involved in the wager. Kinane was about 22 when he finished second in the Derby on a bloody great carthorse called Carlingford Castle, who, in a more enlightened age, would have been "cut" and won a Cheltenham Gold Cup. He (the horse) was a sort of 1980's version of Galileo Rock. They did try him over hurdles on the gallops (when still entire and trained by Henry Cecil) but he refused point blank to co-operate, threw his jockey, and galloped off across Newmarket Heath. Pages that have citations that contain the day of the week in a date parameter are included in Category:CS1 errors: dates. FYI, thanks to the editor who moved around all the infoboxes when nothing was broken, we have a bit of confusion. I asked that infobox thoroughbred racehorse be renamed infobox racehorse (so we can use it with Standardbreds or whatever else) redirect infobox sport horse to infobox named horse (which fits, as a sport horse is generally one who competes in the FIE/Olympic disciplines) and hopefully get the transclusions fixed. Debating if there is a need for an article on Louisiana Derby winner Pants On Fire (horse). I guess the LA Derby is a grade II, but the horse is still racing. Not doing great, but multiple graded stakes wins and over $1 million in purse winnings at the end of 2013.
