Classis Germanica

Thanks for all your help on Classis Germanica (currently listed at WP:PNT)! As you're going through it fixing it up, please don't delete garbled paragraphs that are too opaque to understand. You can either just tag it and leave the garbled paragraph alone, or even better, go find the original paragraph in the German article, and drop it right into the text instead of, or above, the inscrutable machine-translated gobbledygook. Someone will come along and translate it from the original. Thanks for your help on the article, and carry on! Mathglot (talk) 20:53, 26 September 2016 (UTC)

No problems Mathglot and thanks for your message. Sorry for removing text, I didn't know that was best practice, just wanted to leave something readable. I'm not sure when I'll be coming back to it, it started giving me a bit of headache after while although it was kind of interesting content. The original was probably a bit too long to start with though. I'll go back soon and retrieve some of the 'gobbledygook' as you so rightly put it from the diffs I marked. I might also have a look at WP:PNT, see if there's anything else I can help with there. Scribolt (talk) 05:45, 27 September 2016 (UTC)
I didn't mean to imply that it was standard, I'm just an editor like you, but I'm able to do translations, and it just makes life easier that way. It's a "nice to have": if you can do it, great; if not, well, anyone can go pull the original quote if they notice something is missing (that's the hard part). Even just leaving the gobbledygook in there is better than nothing, as someone else may see that it needs work.
Speaking of gobbledygook, there's a great German word I've always liked: Kauderwelsch. There's just something funny about it, but it's a great word. Then again, gobbledygook sounds pretty funny, too. Thanks for your help, and if it's giving you a headache, just switch on to something else. And happy editing! Mathglot (talk) 06:07, 27 September 2016 (UTC)
That is a good one, satisfying to say. I've been trying to learn a little actually, but its so hard. I hate all the tenses. But I do love the compound words. My favourite ones so far are flusspferd and handschule. Just brilliant...Scribolt (talk) 06:30, 27 September 2016 (UTC)

Wikipedia talk:Citation overkill

The main problem at Wikipedia talk:Citation overkill was that in your initial close, you didn't remove the {{rfc}} template, so Legobot assumed that it was still open. The confusion of the bot was compounded by the direct use of {{rfc top}}/{{rfc bottom}} - it assumes that the five-character sequence {{rfc is the start of another RfC. This may be avoided by using the redirects {{closed rfc top}}/{{closed rfc bottom}}.

Where did you dind information on how to close an RfC early? I'd like to check it over, and amend where necessary. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 11:27, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

Thanks so much for sorting my mess out User:Redrose64, this was my first attempt at trying to do this. In terms of what I looked at, well, I kind of went all over the place. I think I went WP:RFCEND to WP:CLOSE and then I read Rfc top as per its recommendation. It's very possible I didn't read the instructions properly though because I realised after the bot started arguing with me that I didn't remove the Rfc template as required. I also switched to the archiving template because I thought that might have also been something to do with it. In future (not that I imagine that'll I'll be trying to do this again in a hurry), am I correct in saying to close an Rfc, I remove the Rfc template, and then use closed rfc top & closed rfc bottom? That seems to be what you did. Scribolt (talk) 11:44, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days

A couple months ago you gave this a minor copyedit; I've given it a significant expansion since then, could you please take another look? I'm thinking WP:GA, what do you think? Ribbet32 (talk) 00:00, 1 July 2017 (UTC)

Hi Ribbet32. Good work, it's looking better. I'll have a look at it later and maybe give it a copy edit if you'd like. Can't give you accurate advice on the GA side of things, but it seems to cover all the bases. Scribolt (talk) 06:56, 3 July 2017 (UTC)
I don't know if you noticed, but I withdrew the GA nomination. I believe the article can be developed further, hence why I broke off a lot of its content to List of accolades received by 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days. You indicated on the talk page you're Romanian; would you be able to point to reviews from notable Romanian critics in 2007? Ribbet32 (talk) 05:43, 26 August 2017 (UTC)
Um, I'm not sure where it appeared to say I was Romanian, but regardless, sorry for the confusion because I'm certainly not. My knowledge of the place extends pretty much to this film, Georgi Hagi and thinking that Transylvania might be part of it. Sorry. Scribolt (talk) 12:58, 27 August 2017 (UTC)
I thought on the talk page you said "Our Decree 770" ("our" as in Romania's), now I see it as "Our Decree 770 article" ("our" as in Wikipedia's). Sorry. Ribbet32 (talk) 20:28, 27 August 2017 (UTC)
No worries! I can see why you'd think that. Good luck with the improvements. Scribolt (talk) 06:04, 28 August 2017 (UTC)

Help with Editing/Review

Hi I am new to Wikipedia, so forgive me if this is not the correct place to ask for help. I recently created an article for David Benac, but it needs reviewing. Any help would certainly be appreciated. It is wonderful that you offer your time, and respect the work of others by not completely rewriting. Thanks, Nicool9 (talk) 22:04, 10 July 2017 (UTC)Nicool9

Hi, Nicool9, there's no problem with asking, not sure I can help though much though. Death Wish (1974 film)

Hi, could I request a copy edit of this article's plot and also cut the blatant excess? It's completely fine if you're currently wrapped up with real-life obligations. Thanks, either way. Slightlymad (talk) 14:27, 6 August 2017 (UTC)

No problem. I'll try and hack away at it in the next few days. Scribolt (talk) 16:32, 6 August 2017 (UTC)
I had a go, its certainly shorter now. I've not seen the film (although I've heard of it obviously) but hopefully I haven't pruned anything too important out of it. Feel free to re-instate anything relevant. Scribolt (talk) 06:30, 7 August 2017 (UTC)

Hi Scribolt, thanks for reducing the Death Wish article's plot to its required length. How 'bout another one for today, say, the Saturday Night Fever article? I performed a cleanup of the article but its 736-word plot could also use a minor cutting. SLIGHTLYmad 09:07, 5 September 2017 (UTC)

No worries, keep asking away :-). I've taken my plot scissors to it. Scribolt (talk) 10:39, 5 September 2017 (UTC)
In that case, The Song of Bernadette would be your next assignment. In case you're worried about cutting important scenes, there's a legit copy of the movie uploaded on YouTube. Carry on. :-) SLIGHTLYmad 04:57, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

Your rv on Covenant

There is likely a better form for the edit than leaving the phrase about the transmission without an adjective at all. By the end of the film, it is clear that the source of the unidentified radio transmission beacon can only be either David or Naomi's character, with David the more likely source. If you have a better adjective to describe this then it should be added. ManKnowsInfinity (talk) 17:45, 5 September 2017 (UTC)

@ManKnowsInfinity: Hi. Thanks for the message. I can understand your point, but I personally don't agree. As the film makes no reference as to how why or when the transmission was made, I think it's fine for the plot summary to simply mention that there was a radio transmission and that they investigated it. It's a bit of a plot hole really, why would either of them deliberately send an extract of Naomi singing? Both of them, for different reasons, would want to attract passing ships so why not just record a message requesting help? I'd prefer if the summary skirts over it, no point in making the write-up more complex than necessary for an ambiguous and unanswered point in the film itself. Scribolt (talk) 06:33, 6 September 2017 (UTC)
That's clearly stated by you. The article I read off-line was that David had set off the radio transmission loop as a lure to get someone to bite. David succeeded, and ended up taking over the Covenant. Originally, I thought of putting in the phrase "as yet unidentified radio transmission", though that seemed wordy. The idea of David setting off the radio beacon as a lure for passing ships seems convincing, and you can decide if its worth working it into the plot summary. ManKnowsInfinity (talk) 14:52, 6 September 2017 (UTC)
I think you're probably right, but we always need to be careful when writing plot summaries that we don't try to interpret or add anything that isn't in the film itself. That's why I think it's best left alone, as vague and unresolved as it was in the film itself. After all, it's a modern Alien film, unexplained plot inconsistencies are basically mandatory. --== Death Wish (1974) guns ==

Hello. I'm sorry that I annoy you by keeping adding names to the guns in this film. I'm doing it, because if someone reads the plot, and sees words "revolver" and "pistol", he can find out the exact gun used in the film. I know that there's IMFDB for this, but I thought it would be faster to click on their links instead of bothering to go to IMFDB and finding them. But if you don't agree with that, I'll stop it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Petrandreev13 (talkcontribs) 08:32, 9 September 2017 (UTC)

Hi Petrandreev13. Thanks a lot for coming to discuss. In general, we should link to things that enhance the readers understanding of the article, which in plot summaries is usually when a technical term is used that they may not understand. In this case, knowing the make of the revolver adds nothing to the understanding of the plot of the film, and in addition is veering into original research territory (we're relying on you to identify the gun correctly on sight), because we shouldn't be making interpretations as to what is going on that isn't specifically stated. Seeing as how the make of the gun isn't relevant to the plot, it's best to keep it simple, which should always be a consideration in writing any article and especially a plot summary.. Thanks again for discussing though. Scribolt (talk) 05:47, 11 September 2017 (UTC)

Geek-dom expands

I just noticed the new-ish Parasitoid#In_culture. Geek-dom is not to be taken on lightly...(referring to our "Covenant" discussion) Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:28, 19 December 2017 (UTC)

That's an interesting read Gråbergs Gråa Sång. As it is now in a biology article, it must be both true and important ;). On a side note, I've always disliked those 'in popular culture' sections, they are often tonally inconsistent with the rest of the article. At least this one was kind of sourced, unlike others I've seen. Scribolt (talk) 22:33, 19 December 2017 (UTC)
I actually have a weakness for those, but I want them WP-acceptable, so to speak. If I find an interesting "messy" one I attack it with a machete. Otto_Skorzeny#In_fiction in it´s current form is my writing, I worked on Cain_and_Abel#Cultural_portrayals_and_references (big fan of Neil Gaiman), Donald Trump in popular culture and Saturday Night Live parodies of Donald Trump. Oh yeah, and I seem to have negotiated this one: Ophidiophobia. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 22:46, 19 December 2017 (UTC)
Well, if every section included a Sandman reference, I wouldn't mind them so much. The ones you've linked there are brief and to the point though, good work. Scribolt (talk) 23:50, 19 December 2017 (UTC)

I'm trying to talk about changes on the talk page, isn't that what you're supposed to do before you erase somebody's writing? --47.204.0.189 (talk) 10:32, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi. Sorry, I missed your comments on the talk page, they're kind of buried in the middle. It might have been better to start a new section for a discussion. I'll reply there, but for the record, you're right that it should be discussed, but wrong in that the challenged content is removed until a consensus is reached to include it. Peer review newsletter #1

Introduction

Hello to all! I do not intend to write a regular peer review newsletter but there does occasionally come a time when those interested in contributing to peer review should be contacted, and now is one. I've mailed this out to everyone on the peer review volunteers list, and some editors that have contributed to past discussions. Apologies if I've left you off or contacted you and you didn't want it. Next time there is a newsletter / mass message it will be opt in (here), I'll talk about this below - but first:

  • THANK YOU! I want to thank you for your contributions and for volunteering on the list to help out at peer review. Thank you!
  • Peer review is useful! It's good to have an active peer review process. This is often the way that we help new or developing editors understand our ways, and improve the quality of their editing - so it fills an important and necessary gap between the teahouse (kindly introduction to our Wikiways) and GA and FA reviews (specific standards uphelp according to a set of quality criteria). And we should try and improve this process where possible (automate, simplify) so it can be used and maintained easily.

Updates

It can get quite lonely tinkering with peer review...
With a bit of effort we can renovate the place to look like this!

Update #1: the peer review volunteers list is changing

The list is here in case you've forgotten: WP:PRV. Kadane has kindly offered to create a bot that will ping editors on the volunteers list with unanswered reviews in their chosen subject areas every so often. You can choose the time interval by changing the "contact" parameter. Options are "never", "monthly", "quarterly", "halfyearly", and "annually". For example:

  • {{PRV|JohnSmith|History of engineering|contact=monthly}} - if placed in the "History" section, JohnSmith will receive an automatic update every month about unanswered peer reviews relating to history.
  • {{PRV|JaneSmith|Mesopotamian geography, Norwegian fjords|contact=annually}} - if placed in the "Geography" section, JaneSmith will receive an automatic update every yearly about unanswered peer reviews in the geography area.

We can at this stage only use the broad peer review section titles to guide what reviews you'd like, but that's better than nothing! You can also set an interest in multiple separate subject areas that will be updated at different times.

Update #2: a (lean) WikiProject Peer review

I don't think we need a WikiProject with a giant bureaucracy nor all sorts of whiz-bang features. However over the last few years I've found there are times when it would have been useful to have a list of editors that would like to contribute to discussions about the peer review process (e.g. instructions, layout, automation, simplification etc.). Also, it can get kind of lonely on the talk page as I am (correct me if I'm wrong) the only regular contributor, with most editors moving on after 6 - 12 months.

So, I've decided to create "WikiProject Peer review". If you'd like to contribute to the WikiProject, or make yourself available for future newsletters or contact, please add yourself to the list of members.

Update #3: advertising

We plan to do some advertising of peer review, to let editors know about it and how to volunteer to help, at a couple of different venues (Signpost, Village pump, Teahouse etc.) - but have been waiting until we get this bot + WikiProject set up so we have a way to help interested editors make more enduring contributions. So consider yourself forewarned!

And... that's it!

I wish you all well on your Wikivoyages, Tom (LT) (talk) 00:31, 11 August 2018 (UTC)

Debussy

But in the interests of clarification - in 1879 D. was still a student - although his first known composition may date from then, it would be stretching things a bit to say his 'career as a composer' started then - I would have thought that his Prix de Rome of 1884 was a bit more plausible. That would make 33 years, so the wording 'little more than' 30 years is justified.--Smerus (talk) 11:10, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

Completely agree. I was only puzzled because I 'noticed' that the gap between his first and last piece was only 27/28 years... Then I engaged my brain. Thanks for not pointing and laughing too much. Scribolt (talk) 11:19, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

The Months of African Cinema Contest Continues in November!

Greetings,

Thank you very much for participating in the Months of African Cinema global contest/edit-a-thon, and thank you for your contributions so far.

It is already the middle of the contest and a lot have been achieved already! We have been able to get over 1,500 articles created in over fifteen (15) languages! This would not have been possible without your support and we want to thank you. If you have not yet listed your name as a participant in the contest page please do so.

Please make sure to list the articles you have created or improved in the article achievements' section of the contest page, so that they can be easily tracked. To be able to claim prizes, please also ensure to list your articles on the users by articles page. We would be awarding prizes to different categories of winners:

  • Overall winner
    • 1st - $500
    • 2nd - $200
    • 3rd - $100
  • Diversity winner - $100
  • Gender-gap filler - $100
  • Language Winners - up to $100*

We are very excited about what has been achieved so far, but your contributions are still needed to further exceed all expectations! Let’s create more articles before the end of this contest, which is this November!!!

Thank you once again for being part of this global event! --Jamie Tubers (talk) 10:30, 06 November 2020 (UTC)
