WikiCup 2018 July newsletter

The third round of the 2018 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round had at least 227 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

  •   Courcelles, a first time contestant, with 1756 points, a tally built largely on 27 GAs related to the Olympics
  •   Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with two featured articles and three GAs on natural history and astronomy topics
  •   SounderBruce, a finalist last year, with a variety of submissions related to transport in the state of Washington

Contestants managed 7 featured articles, 4 featured lists, 120 good articles, 1 good topic, 124 DYK entries, 15 ITN entries, and 132 good article reviews. Over the course of the competition, contestants have completed 458 GA reviews, in comparison to 244 good articles submitted for review and promoted. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process; several submissions, particularly in abstruse or technical areas, have needed additional work to make them completely verifiable.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. TFL notification – July 2018

Hi, PresN. I'm just posting to let you know that List of Sega video game consoles – a list that you have been heavily involved with – has been chosen to appear on the Main Page as Today's featured list for July 27. The TFL blurb can be seen here. If you have any thoughts on the selection, please post them on my talk page or at TFL talk. Regards, Giants2008 (Talk) 22:21, 2 July 2018 (UTC)

Please note that I moved the list's appearance date back one week, to August 3, after a request was made at TFLS for the July 27th slot. Hopefully this doesn't cause you any problems. Giants2008 (Talk) 21:34, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

  Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC about the deletion of drafts closed with a consensus to change the wording of WP:NMFD. Specifically, a draft that has been repeatedly resubmitted and declined at AfC without any substantial improvement may be deleted at MfD if consensus determines that it is unlikely to ever meet the requirements for mainspace and it otherwise meets one of the reasons for deletion outlined in the deletion policy.
  • A request for comment closed with a consensus that the {{promising draft}} template cannot be used to indefinitely prevent a WP:G13 speedy deletion nomination.

  Technical news

  • Starting on July 9, the WMF Security team, Trust & Safety, and the broader technical community will be seeking input on an upcoming change that will restrict editing of site-wide JavaScript and CSS to a new technical administrators user group. Bureaucrats and stewards will be able to grant this right per a community-defined process. The intention is to reduce the number of accounts who can edit frontend code to those who actually need to, which in turn lessens the risk of malicious code being added that compromises the security and privacy of everyone who accesses Wikipedia. For more information, please review the FAQ.
  • Syntax highlighting has been graduated from a Beta feature on the English Wikipedia. To enable this feature, click the highlighter icon ( ) in your editing toolbar (or under the hamburger menu in the 2017 wikitext editor). This feature can help prevent you from making mistakes when editing complex templates.
  • IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in July (previously scheduled for June). This will cause the block of a logged-out user to be reloaded if they change IPs. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. For the time being, it only affects users of the desktop interface.

  Miscellaneous

  • Currently around 20% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 17% a year ago. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless if you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.

Organization of Dante (Devil May Cry)

I have been working on the article Dante (Devil May Cry), adding more conception info including almost every voice actor (can't find anyhting from one) while adding more reception. However, I'm confused with its current organization. There is a section for his redesign by Ninja Theory but when I come to think of it the character goes a change in every game: In the first one he is an adult, in the second one he is more mature, in the third one he is a teenager, in the fourth a guy in his 30s, and in the upcoming fifth one an elder. Is there an article that could serve as an example for Dante's to follow? I mean, Lara Croft already underwent too many changes too.

Guess I'll ping @JDC808: and @ProtoDrake: considering they are also quite skilled. Cheers.Tintor2 (talk) 22:42, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

@Tintor2: The DmC version is his own thing, separate from the main canon and with a lot more info dedicated to him than others. The other character changes can form part of the character's main section. While he has changed, his overall canon design has maintained consistent features and style, while the DmC reboot changed a lot of those. I might advise putting the voice actor section beneath the DmC redesign section, and adding the reboot Danta's VA/Mocap info to that section. Plus, if there's nothing about his actor for the second canon game, just find a citation confirming that it was that voice actor doing the role. That's what I did with the article for the Prince when I did work on it a few years back. --ProtoDrake (talk) 18:36, 7 July 2018 (UTC)
@JDC808: and @ProtoDrake: too. Thanks to an artbook I managed to highly expand Dante's creation section. However, I wonder if the section might be too big for GA. It is also separated in chronoligcal order so I have no idea if it should be rearranged.Tintor2 (talk) 16:38, 21 July 2018 (UTC)
I don't think it's too long. --PresN 19:09, 21 July 2018 (UTC)

The GAN for Marienbad (video game)

Just wanted to get your opinion on whether I should be included as a co-nominator of the article for GAN considering all the research and work I put into the article. I've never had a GA article before so I trust your judgement, but it came across as a bit disingenuous when I first saw it. Hope to hear from you soon!--Coin945 (talk) 14:52, 17 July 2018 (UTC)

@Coin945: Yes you should, I'm so sorry! Was going to mention it when the review got picked up, I forgot that the GAN template auto-adds the poster as the nominator. I've manually added you now. I should have asked you beforehand, actually- are you alright with it being nominated? You definitely did the heavy lifting on finding all the sources, and I don't want to put it out there without your consent. --PresN 16:41, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for the update and clarification. I would love to be nominated. In fact, being co-nominator, I believe, will actually serve as a learning experience in which I can make an article GA-ready with a more experienced editor by my side. I want the Early history of video games template to be completed as much as you do, and would love to see one of the articles I put a lot of work into successfully reach GA. :)--Coin945 (talk) 00:16, 18 July 2018 (UTC)

  Guideline and policy news

  • After a discussion at Meta, a new user group called "interface administrators" (formerly "technical administrator") has been created. Come the end of August, interface admins will be the only users able to edit site-wide JavaScript and CSS pages like MediaWiki:Common.js and MediaWiki:Common.css, or edit other user's personal JavaScript and CSS. The intention is to improve security and privacy by reducing the number of accounts which could be used to compromise the site or another user's account through malicious code. The new user group can be assigned and revoked by bureaucrats. Discussion is ongoing to establish details for implementing the group on the English Wikipedia.
  • Following a request for comment, the WP:SISTER style guideline now states that in the mainspace, interwiki links to Wikinews should only be made as per the external links guideline. This generally means that within the body of an article, you should not link to Wikinews about a particular event that is only a part of the larger topic. Wikinews links in "external links" sections can be used where helpful, but not automatically if an equivalent article from a reliable news outlet could be linked in the same manner.

Organization of a game article

Hello, PresN. Sorry for bothering you again but I have recently expanded the article Devil May Cry 4 and I wondered what if the article requires a reorganization due to some of the small sections. I never understood if release and development should be together. Is there an article that you would tell me to follow as an example? Cheers.Tintor2 (talk) 01:09, 7 August 2018 (UTC)

@Tintor2: It's fine to split out release from development if you have enough info, and I think it's fine as-is. If you don't have anything more for the iOS/Windows subsections, I'd combine them into "ports", or maybe move them into release- so Release would be 1) the main marketing/release, and I'd drop the subheading for the collector's edition (so the first 3 paragraphs all together), then 2) Ports covering Windows and iOS, then 3) move Special Edition to a subsection of release.
This would leave you with Music as the only really small subsection, which I think could be expanded. --PresN 01:41, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. I tried rearranging them a bit more. However, I don't know what to do about the Special Edition version. It's basically the same game with more content released some years after the original release. There is reception about that update. Should I try give it its own article similar to the Street Fighter articles? Thanks.Tintor2 (talk) 23:48, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
@Tintor2: Hmm, only if there's enough development and reception; for the Homeworld remaster I just gave it it's own section at the end (Homeworld#Legacy). --PresN 01:31, 8 August 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. I rearranged it and gave a bit of reception. Already asked for a copyedit in the guild since it is a GA. Cheers.Tintor2 (talk) 17:54, 8 August 2018 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Marienbad (video game)

The article Marienbad (video game) you nominated as a good article has passed  ; see Talk:Marienbad (video game) for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already been on the main page as an "In the news" or "Did you know" item, you can nominate it to appear in Did you know. Hey @PresN:, if you get the Star Trek 1971 text game to GA status, does that mean you have a good topic? All the early mainframe games that have articles would be GA along with the main article. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 15:08, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
@Judgesurreal777: Hmm, good point, I hadn't thought about that. Yes, though it's been on my list to do for 2 years now- maybe I'll move it up to the top. --PresN 19:51, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
Wow PresN we did it! Woohoo! Teamwork. I'm really happy that my efforts to highlight Eastern European gaming and your efforts to work on the early history of video gaming came together with Marienbad, and I love the finished article. :)--Coin945 (talk) 23:41, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
@Coin945: Congrats to you for all your hard work tracking down Polish sources! I really didn't expect much to come of it when you created the original stub, but together we turned it into a neat little article! --PresN 03:09, 14 August 2018 (UTC)

Redux: The Great Videogame Swindle? and Electronic Nation

Almost ten months ago you asked me on my talk page about an article I had referenced from Next Generation, and I told you it was an abridged version of the first four chapters of Steven L. Kent's book Electronic Nation. I've just now stumbled on a letter in the April 1997 issue of Next Generation. The reader says that upon reading the aforementioned article he looked all over for Electronic Nation and couldn't find it. The editor replied that Kent was having trouble finding a publisher for the book. ...So, I guess Electronic Nation doesn't exist in published form after all.--Martin IIIa (talk) 22:27, 16 August 2018 (UTC)

@Martin IIIa: Oh, good to have confirmation about that, then. Looks like all the cites were to the NG article, not the book, so no updates needed. --PresN 01:56, 17 August 2018 (UTC)

Indiggo

PresN, eight (!) years ago you made a comment on my talk page. As you are no doubt aware, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri achieved GA status. My partner in that effort Nolelover is semi-retired.

After a long wiki-break, I returned to work on Indiggo. My recent message on a very inactive administrator’s talk page discusses a couple of concerns I have about Indiggo.

I started going through my talk page to reconnect to old acquaintances. I was delighted to see you are still active. I was also delighted to see you are an admin. In addition to providing me guidance on my concerns, could you recommend activities outside Indiggo? (I no longer play video games, so I’m not interested in the video games wiki-project.)

Thank you for your attention! Vyeh (talk) 18:57, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

File:TheOregonTrail1971Gameplay.png

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:08, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

WikiCup 2018 September newsletter

The fourth round of the 2018 WikiCup has now come to an end. The eight users who made it to the final round had to score a minimum of 422 points to qualify, with the top score in the round being 4869 points. The leaders in round 4 were:

  •   Courcelles scored a magnificent 4869 points, with 92 good articles on Olympics-related themes. Courcelles' bonus points alone exceeded the total score of any of the other contestants!
  •   Kees08 was second with 1155 points, including a high-scoring featured article for Neil Armstrong, two good topics and some Olympics-related good articles.
  •   Cas Liber, with 1066 points, was in third place this round, with two featured articles and a good article, all on natural history topics.
  • Other contestants who qualified for the final round were   Nova Crystallis,   Iazyges,   SounderBruce,   Kosack and   Ceranthor.

During round four, 6 featured articles and 164 good articles were promoted by WikiCup contestants, 13 articles were included in good topics and 143 good article reviews were performed. There were also 10 "in the news" contributions on the main page and 53 "did you knows". Congratulations to all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck, and let the best editor win! • Following a "stop-gap" discussion, six users have temporarily been made interface administrators while discussion is ongoing for a more permanent process for assigning the permission. Interface administrators are now the only editors allowed to edit sitewide CSS and JavaScript pages, as well as CSS/JS pages in another user's userspace. Previously, all administrators had this ability. The right can be granted and revoked by bureaucrats.

  Technical news

  • Because of a data centre test you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for up to an hour on 12 September and 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. The time when you can't edit might be shorter than an hour.
  • Some abuse filter variables have changed. They are now easier to understand for non-experts. The old variables will still work but filter editors are encouraged to replace them with the new ones. You can find the list of changed variables on mediawiki.org. They have a note which says Deprecated. Use ... instead. An example is article_text which is now page_title.
  • Abuse filters can now use how old a page is. The variable is page_age.

  Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee has resolved to perform a round of Checkuser and Oversight appointments. The usernames of all applicants will be shared with the Functionaries team, and they will be requested to assist in the vetting process. Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games semi-automated new article announcements

Hello, a few days ago I noticed you posted in the discussion page for WikiProject Video games a list of new articles in the project. However, the post links to Wikipedia:WikiProject_Video_games/New_article_announcements (which is also linked on the project's portal main page), which hasn't been updated in over a month. Is there a problem with the script? Derek M (talk) 23:39, 4 September 2018 (UTC)

@Derek M: The script doesn't post anything, I manually post to WT:VG and there; I stopped doing the new article announcements page 3 months ago and you're the first to comment. I should probably get it back up to date, though, if it's linked to from other places. --PresN 03:54, 6 September 2018 (UTC)

Two questions

First, is the format on Associated Press NFL Rookie of the Year Award fine, or would it be better for the lists to be in separate sections? Second, is List of NFL quarterbacks with seven touchdown passes in a game too short to be an FL? Lizard (talk) 01:56, 24 September 2018 (UTC)

Hi PresN! I had a quick question for you. I saw you archive sources here. I was wondering what script/bot/service you used to do this? I would like to apply it to other articles I am working on. Thanks! « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 14:43, 1 October 2018 (UTC)

@Gonzo fan2007: Though there might be a gadget or script that PresN is using to facilitate the interaction, the bot that executes it is User:InternetArchiveBot. There is apparently a link on the history page to kill dead links; the link probably points to the runbotsingle page. --Izno (talk) 15:03, 1 October 2018 (UTC)

The King of Fighters '99

I recently expanded the article The King of Fighters '99 and requested a copy-edit. However, I'm not sure if it lacks something to be a potential GA. Sadly, I can't find more interviews involving this article because Neo Geo Freak magazines from 1999 are not available. Any advice would be appreciated.Tintor2 (talk) 00:21, 15 October 2018 (UTC)

@Tintor2: It needs a copyedit, but I think it looks solid enough for GA content-wise even without that magazine's content. --PresN 00:40, 15 October 2018 (UTC)
Thanks.Tintor2 (talk) 00:53, 15 October 2018 (UTC)
There is a doubt I have. The game was given a novelization, while some theme songs were used on a spinf off? Should they be used in reception as some sort legacy alongside the sequel information?Tintor2 (talk) 15:46, 17 October 2018 (UTC)
Yeah, my general rule is any sort of "real world" legacy (even if it's just music used in another game or a novelization) should always be included. If you don't have enough to write about between that and the sequel for a standalone section it can just be a paragraph at the end of reception, and you could consider renaming it to "Reception and legacy" or something. --PresN 16:00, 17 October 2018 (UTC)
A fellow copyeditor touched everything in the article. Still, should the GameRankings and Metacritic scores remain in the article considering they have 6 reviews at maximum?Tintor2 (talk) 22:24, 5 November 2018 (UTC)
@Tintor2: I think no, since it doesn't actually add any more information than the sum of the reviews already used in the article, and is a crummy average besides with so few inputs. --PresN 01:28, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. Removed.Tintor2 (talk) 16:40, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of The Oregon Trail (1971 video game)

The article The Oregon Trail (1971 video game) you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold  . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. See Talk:The Oregon Trail (1971 video game) for things which need to be addressed. Your GA nomination of The Oregon Trail (1971 video game)

The article The Oregon Trail (1971 video game) you nominated as a good article has passed  ; see Talk:The Oregon Trail (1971 video game) for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already been on the main page as an "In the news" or "Did you know" item, you can nominate it to appear in Did you know. Thanks

Thank you so much for adding archives to this article while I was gone. [1] I wanted to ask, if its not too much work, could you use the same script on Meghan Trainor, Meghan Trainor discography and List of songs recorded by Meghan Trainor? I plan on nominating those for featured status as well so I would really appreciate it!--NØ 07:12, 7 November 2018 (UTC)

@MaranoFan: Yep, can do, it's actually very easy- if you go to the 'view history' for any page, at the top there's a 'Fix dead links' link- that takes you to the IABot interface, which (after logging in to wikipedia again) lets you add archive links to dead references on any page, or if you hit the checkbox, archive links to all references. --PresN 14:54, 7 November 2018 (UTC)
Thanks a lot! This will definitely be very useful for me in the future.--NØ 15:02, 7 November 2018 (UTC)

List of cities in Israel

Hello PresN!

Thank you for closing the FLRC for List of cities in Israel that I nominated. But it seems to me that you have incorrectly interpreted the policy regarding delisting. The policy which is written on the same page reads "For a nomination to be kept, consensus must be reached that it still meets the criteria." As no consensus "that it still meets the criteria" was reached, wouldn't that mean that the page should be delisted?

Furthermore, I must say that I'm more than a little dismayed by the behaviour of your colleague The Rambling Man. He had not previously interacted with me, yet found it appropriate to accuse me of nominating the article in bad faith and trying to circumvent the process. I don't know how the FL system works, but it says on the page that you and him are delegates of the FLC director, Giants2008, which I assume are elected positions. Those who are appointed by the community should stay impartial which I feel that both you and him failed to do.

Regarding the consensus, then no, it has never existed. The list attained FL status in 2008 thanks to a narrow victory and the "in Israel" part of the name was just as contentious then as it is now. Several failed attempts over the years have been made to have the name changed. While they have all failed, no consensus have ever existed that the current name is appropriate. Imho, it was a mistake to promote the article to FL status in the first place.

Articles relating to Israel and Palestine are like this and it takes years and endless rounds of voting to fix them. Especially if you don't have time to edit around the clock. My last stint was in 2017 and then I had a long break until this month. That's how it is, and just because something has been the "status quo" for a long while doesn't mean it shouldn't be fixed. ImTheIP (talk) 01:35, 15 November 2018 (UTC)

@ImTheIP: On one hand, you have a point- the instructions do say/imply that "no consensus" means that a list should be delisted; that said, for as long as I've been a delegate (3.5 years) FLRCs have been interpreted as "no consensus = keep". I'm going to open up a discussion about that in a minute, because the instructions and the way we close FLRCs should match, so one or the other is wrong, so thank you for bringing that to my attention.
As to the other point, yes, TRM is often brusque. But he also wasn't wrong- you can't say that the list title is in violation of the naming policy, because literally the day before you nominated it for delisting there was the latest of multiple community discussions about that on the talk page, and the conclusion was that it was not in violation (more specifically, it was "no consensus" that it was in violation. Aka that the violation was not agreed on.) You can't have a discussion that results in "we don't agree that this list is in violation", then turn around the next day and say that it should be delisted because it's in violation. And I'm saying that as someone who agrees with you- I don't like that the list includes cities in the polity of Israel that are not in the physical borders of Israel without the title being clear about that. But with multiple discussions failing to result in an agreement that the title is in violation, there's no grounds for an FLRC on that issue. FLRC is not for "there's a debate on the talk page about the list that isn't resulting in consensus, therefore delist", it's for "there's an issue with the list that is not getting attention or getting fixed, therefore delist". If there was a consensus that the name was bad, but no consensus as to what to change it to, then maybe? But it didn't look like the talk page had even resolved that much.
All that aside: the list does have some issues. Ignoring that the table is super-short, check out a current FLC, Municipalities of Baja California (or any of the other North American city lists that editor has done, see WP:FL) - even without any of the political issues, it has a much more extensive lead and discussion of what a "city" means in that country/state, and more of an overall summary of the cities themselves in addition to the table. So, putting aside whether those 4 cities really belong in the Israel list or if the title is inclusive of them, there's stuff that could be done to expand/improve the list beyond those five words in blue at the top. --PresN 02:48, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
Curiously, I was more than a little dismayed by the gaming attempt to delist this seemingly controversial article. After numerous failed attempts to move the page, it seems to me like the next step was to just try something else to denigrate the article and that was to attempt to delist it. Of course nothing in policy or guideline substantiated that position in any way. The discussion was correctly closed because the claims and votes were not a matter for FLRC, as was clearly pointed out at the time. The Rambling Man (talk) 07:42, 15 November 2018 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Star Trek (1971 video game)

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Star Trek (1971 video game) you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria.   This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Indrian -- Indrian (talk) 16:40, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

File:Star Trek STTR1 code.png

See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. • Following a request for comment, the Mediation Committee is now closed and will no longer be accepting case requests.
  • A request for comment is in progress to determine whether members of the Bot Approvals Group should satisfy activity requirements in order to remain in that role.
  • A request for comment is in progress regarding whether to change the administrator inactivity policy, such that administrators "who have made no logged administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped". Currently, the policy states that administrators "who have made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped".

  Miscellaneous

  • In late November, an attacker compromised multiple accounts, including at least four administrator accounts, and used them to vandalize Wikipedia. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately. Sharing the same password across multiple websites makes your account vulnerable, especially if your password was used on a website that suffered a data breach. As these incidents have shown, these concerns are not pure fantasies.
  • Wikipedia policy requires administrators to have strong passwords. To further reinforce security, administrators should also consider enabling two-factor authentication. A committed identity can be used to verify that you are the true account owner in the event that your account is compromised and/or you are unable to log in.

FAC Mentoring

Hi, PresN. I was recently directed to the Mentoring for FAC page, and your name stuck out to me. I've seen you around, and, after looking at your profile, there's a lot to admire and aspire to. Would you be interested in mentoring me through promoting the article Streetcleaner to featured status? It is a 1989 industrial metal album, and I'm not an extremely experienced editor (~5,500 edits since 2016); if these are issues, please feel free to turn me down. I hope to get the article featured by November of 2019 for the album's 30 anniversary. Thanks regardless, CelestialWeevil (talk) 17:08, 11 December 2018 (UTC)

@CelestialWeevil: Sure; give me a bit to read through the article and some recent music FAs and I can give you a guide to what I think needs to be changed prior to nomination and what to expect in the nomination itself. --PresN 17:23, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
Thank you very much. I really appreciate it. I also looked back at some of your former mentorships, so I'll try to apply those suggestions to Streetcleaner also. CelestialWeevil (talk) 17:50, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
@CelestialWeevil: Ok, here we go!
  • To start off with, this is very well written compared with most things I review, so good job with that. I'm not really seeing any major structural issues.
  • The lead is a bit short for the article's length, though
  • "That EP, though raw and unrefined" - this is crossing the line a bit into editorializing; while I can presume that the sources (allmusic and the la times) call it raw and unrefined or words to that extent, it's a subjective judgment, which just means that "critics have called it raw and unrefined", not that it actually is. You have a few more like this in the article, which mostly come across as poetic word choice but some reviewers may take issue with.
  • "the band played several show across"
  • "resulting in the album being recorded over three separate sessions" - this reads weird, because the ordering is backwards; once Tiny Tears was added to the album, the album was done, so it couldn't then be recorded over three sessions. Maybe "resulting in the album including material from three separate sessions"?
  • You may have trouble with that pull quote; the template documentation for {{cquote}} says "This template should not be used for block quotations in article text.", and sometimes (though not always) FAC reviewers will enforce that.
  • I'm not much of a fan of single-paragraph subsections like "Fall of Because demos", and it's also a little off because it jumps backwards in time. No specific recommendations for merging it in with the above text.
  • "While this track does featured a riff-heavy"
  • Reception has a lot of direct quotes, and you're going to get some flak for that. Consider replacing some of the quotes with paraphrases, or shortening some of the multi-sentence ones
  • References have mixed date styles (2000-01-01 and Day Month Year); pick one
  • Check your references for dead links, and if present add |deadurl=yes to them so that the archive link becomes the first one (like for [2])
  • Speaking of that, I see that Roy Christopher is a published author, but be prepared to justify how roychristopher.com and other sources like it are reliable, because the source reviewer is certain to ask.
  • That's the stuff that I saw; I'm sure that reviewers will find more issues and more detailed grammar, but I don't think you're going to run into a wall if you nominate this at FAC. --PresN 03:37, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
@PresN: Thank you so much! These all help a huge amount. I've implemented some of the simple corrections and will be doing all the rest shortly. I really appreciate it. Once these are fixed, I'll nominate it and hope for the best. CelestialWeevil (talk) 03:46, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
Hi again, @PresN:. Good job on that Wumpus article. I wanted to ask you for another favor (not because I did the GA review; I was interested in the name and topic before I saw it was nominated by you). My FAC nomination for Streetcleaner, seen here, is kind of floundering. I'm addressing all the comments; the problem is I'm just not getting many. I'm afraid it will fail due to lack of input. So, I was hoping you might be able to toss in a comment or two, or anything. Thanks regardless, CelestialWeevil (talk) 00:25, 21 January 2019 (UTC)

@JC7V7DC5768: In skimming through Empires of Eve, with particular attention paid to the synopsis section, I see:
  • A lot of it is unreferenced.
  • The article as a whole feels scant for a GA; I'd expect more content all around.
  • Going with that, you have a lot of 2-3 sentence paragraphs, which make it feel choppy.
  • The sentence structures make it feel choppy too, it's mostly short "x did y" sentences
  • In synopsis you have 4 of 5 sentences in a row starting with "Groen's book" or "Groen's prose" - you can also use the book's title, or "it", or just not start every sentence with the subject.
  • You flip back and forth between present and past tense in Synopsis
  • "Groen's book sometimes blurs the line between the fictional aspects of Eve Online and the game itself." - I get what you're trying to say with this sentence and the next few, but it's not really coming across. You're trying to say that he covers the 2003-09 time period of the game, presenting it both from the perspective of an outside observer to the game and treating it as a history of real events, but "blurs the line" and mentioning Game of Thrones doesn't really get that across.
  • "didn't take his idea book about Eve Online", "Something Awful form GoonFleet" - you have a bunch of typos throughout the article; it needs a copyedit pass.
  • You also have lapses into informal language- "gave Groen fuel to write the book", "Empires of Eve basically takes seemingly uninteresting"
  • I'm not really sure how to fix Synopsis; overall it's choppy and hard to read- the whole thing is "X did Y. Z soon did Q. X attacked Z and Z lost heavily." There's minimal connection between sentences, and it relies on the reader already understanding how Eve works. It needs to be more than a bare recitation of things that happened in the book- it needs to explain to the reader why one event led to another, and what the consequences are. Additionally, you say it covers 2003-09 and then never say when things happen, you never say what the state of the universe was at the start of the book...
  • Honestly, I don't think the article needs a copyedit pass, I think it needs to be rewritten. It's pretty far from the prose level I'd expect from a GA. --PresN 03:58, 14 December 2018 (UTC)

List of songs recorded by Meghan Trainor

It has been more than 48 hours since you promoted this list to FL status but the bot still didn't process the close. Do you think something could have gone wrong? Sorry but I'm only bothering you since I'm trying to start a featured topic nomination which includes this page. Thanks in advance.--NØ 14:27, 30 December 2018 (UTC)
