Welcome in 2021! - A page that appeared on DYK yesterday, Magnificat (Bach), was moved today, and is now a dab. It was moved to the first of the two mentioned there. What - if anything - should be done to the DYK nom template? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:04, 2 January 2021 (UTC)

Happy new year! I assume you mean Magnificat (Hoffmann). I'm glad it wasn't moved while it was still on the Main Page. I see it was updated on your talk page, the article's talk page, and the DYK archive page. It doesn't matter much about the nom page, but feel free to ignore the bold red warning not to modify the page if you want to either change the link or add a note about the new title. University Press of Kansas v. University of Kansas Press

Hi there, I see you recently changed "University of Kansas Press" to "University Press of Kansas" in Caroline Brady (philologist), among other articles. Do you know if the press changed its name at some point, such that both "University of Kansas Press" and "University Press of Kansas" have seen use? The source in question is from 1952, and on the publication page states "University of Kansas Press". I would thus be inclined to revert to this name in the article (unless it was in error in 1952), but am happy to hear your thinking on it. When I saw "University of Kansas Press" listed as a "misspelling", I checked University Press of Kansas to see if that was an alternate or previous name. (For similar circumstances, the articles almost always list such histories.) Furthermore, the University Press of Kansas "about" page discusses their history, with no mention of the other name. It does, however, mention several reorganizations, so it may hint at a name change. But now, I've checked History of the University of Kansas which has the (unsourced) statement: "In January 1946, the University of Kansas Press was inaugurated. The publishing house later joined with other universities in Kansas, and evolved into the statewide University Press of Kansas." So I've gone ahead and piped the link in Caroline Brady (philologist). I've also changed University of Kansas Press from being categorized as a misspelling to a redirect from a former name. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Thanks for tracking that down, and making the change across articles. The addition to History of the University of Kansas was made in this edit by Kgwo1972, who perhaps has an idea where it came from. (Or perhaps not, since the edit was from 2011.) But a change from a name that suggests a single-university press to a name that suggests a statewide-university press does seem consistent with what is online regarding reorganizations and the inclusion of additional universities.

I see you are changing links from Nicholas Poussin to Nicolas Poussin, and marking the edits as minor with the edit summary "as in target article(s)". I'm just glad I checked it, and fixed it in my next edit. Even worse than the pipe trick not working in citations is that italics aren't allowed for the "work" parameter. If you do work=[[Time Out (magazine)|Time Out]] magazine, then "magazine" erroneously ends up in italics. But you can't "fool" the template by doing work=[[Time Out (magazine)|Time Out]] ''magazine''. MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM 17:59, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

Weird DYK template

Hi Mandarax: Can I ask you, as a template boffin, to have a look at Template:Did you know nominations/Gordodon to see if you can figure out what's happening there? First, when I put the 4 tildes at the end of my comment on the 17th, it translated that to the time and date, but not my name. Then, when DrawingDinosaurs responded, it chopped off half of his/her signature, though the whole thing is there when you edit the template. Now, it doesn't show anything after its arbitrary cutoff – including the bit I've just added. Help! MeegsC (talk) 08:46, 18 April 2021 (UTC)

 Done. It looks like the user has an improper "|" in their signature. I'll leave them a note (when I have time) suggesting how they can fix it. As for yours, I assume you accidentally entered five tildes instead of four (three produces just the name, five is just the timestamp, and four, of course, is both). Back in 2011...

Back in 2011, you rated Joshua Tenenbaum (1,078 bytes) as a stub. The article now has almost 8,000 bytes and cites 8 different RS. Actually, I didn't. I created the talk page consisting of a WPB banner with no class specified. It wasn't rated until seven and a half years later, by someone else. I've removed the stub classification. You, or anybody, can add the appropriate class parameter to the banner. See WP:Content assessment. Personally, I find such ratings to be pretty much useless, and I've never supplied one for anything other than "stub" or "start". MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM 16:32, 26 April 2021 (UTC)

Yes, templates can be intimidating, especially when they include things such as {{{1}}}, <includeonly>, {{#ifeq:...}}, etc.

BTW, a bit more on my feelings about article classes. I was always a straight-A student, and the idea of getting a C was unthinkable; it would be tantamount to failure. So when I see an article classified as "C", it makes me think it's an assessment of being in terrible shape, even though that's not at all what "C" was intended to mean. DYK nominations

Hi Mandarax, I notice that every time I nominate an article for DYK, you come by the template and make an edit with the summary "rm {{DYKnom}} (self-nom)". Am I doing something wrong when I create the nomination pages? Is there something I can do differently so that the code {{DYKnom|ARTICLENAME|Armadillopteryx}} does not show up in the first place? Well, first of all, I'd like to compliment you on your choice of signature colors! As for the {{DYKnom}}, it may be that you're omitting the "author" field in the form and letting it use your name by default, or entering your name in a slightly different way, such as with different capitalization or spacing. I understand why you might avoid typing in your username, since it has litterally a million characters. I don't mind removing the credit; it shows up for lots of people, and, as you've determined, it's just become part of my regular DYK-nomination-patrolling routine. I believe the first time I saw this happen, I had manually typed my username in the author field and wondered if that was the problem, so I then started leaving that field blank in hopes of fixing it. Urrgh. I checked and noticed that you hadn't added (transcluded) the nomination to WP:DYKN. I decided to do this for you. It's supposed to be added under the date when, in your case, it was designated a good article. That's when I saw that that happened on March 26. According to DYK rules, a nomination must be made within a week, but yours wasn't done until two months after becoming a GA. A little leeway in the timing is often extended for late nominations, especially for new users, but usually not when it's this late. I went ahead and transcluded it, but you should be prepared to make a plea for leniency since you're new to DYK. Nuremburg

Re your edit to the List of shipwrecks in October 1875, If I spelled it with an "e" that would have been per source. However, spelling in those days was a bit fluid. Will keep an eye on what other sources say when I trawl through non-Times newspaper sources. I had quickly glanced at the ref to see if it was online so I could check the source. It seemed likely (as I mentioned in my edit summary) that the ship was spelled "Nuremberg" (same as the city). Since I couldn't check myself, I had pinged you just in case. BTW, I just took another look, and noticed the title in that ref – "Cpllision in the Channel" – which I've now fixed. The ref is online, but only if you have a subscription to the Gale News Vault. No point in adding the URL I'm using as it's extremely long and only of use to those very few people with a Kent (UK) library card. Other newspaper archives with free access are listed at WP:SHIPS/R. I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. All I did was correct the incorrect name (and remove an erroneous space). Yes, I used AWB (if you don't know what AWB is, please click on the link), but I didn't add any tags to the article. My edit was tagged in the summary as having been made with AWB; this has been automatically done for each of the last 13 million AWB edits made by all of its users. I find it bewildering that you seem to think that the presence of that edit summary tag could possibly "cause problems with the article's further development". Even if I wanted to remove the tag, it is not possible for anybody to edit an edit summary (although I do wish that that capability existed). If one really needs an entire edit summary removed, they can request that an administrator suppress it, but there would have to be a good reason to do so, and there is none here. ...because that's the logical progression of the discussion. I didn't really look into it, but I think the "promoted by" message (at the top) is emitted automatically by the mysterious template machinery when you change the status of the nom and subst, and I didn't want to get near that. Well, it wouldn't be "right next to" it (unless {{DYKsubpage}} was modified to do that). It would be on the next line (which I attempted to indicate in my edit summary with the "/"). The template a promoter submits would look like the following, with to [[T:DYK/P3]]. either immediately after |2= as shown, or on the next line:

In addition to kind of completing a thought (promoted by ... to ...), it would have the advantage that all changes by the promoter would be in the first four lines, without them having to scroll to the bottom. A comment could be added automatically when creating a nomination, instructing promoters to include this, just as there's currently a comment with instructions for the "passed" parameter. Mustafa Fall is a redirect, classified as a misspelling of Moustapha Fall, so, although your edit restored the correct displayed spelling, it still linked to the wrong article. When there's a line break between these components, people see the instruction to "Place comments above this line", and they write immediately above the line, which means that the }} would no longer be in its required end position. Greene County

Thanks for the correction in the 109 U.S. Reports article. It is odd that the original case report spells it "Green County," so I've made a small note on the wiki page next to the case name noting that it is "Green County" in the original report. I suspect some printer or scribe at the time must have misspelled the name of the County, and it's been perpetuated all these years. Thanks again. Thank you very much! It means a lot coming from someone who is doing so much to keep DYK chugging along these days. And thanks for the link – I had no idea that there were ants who were suicide bombers. BTW, over the years I've tried many methods to control ants. The only thing that really works (and thus the only one I use) is diatomaceous earth – it gets rid of ants right away, and keeps them away, and it's so completely nontoxic to everything except certain insects that it's sold as "food grade". Yes, some people think there are health benefits to consuming it (but don't inhale it). I am not recommending that use, and I've never intentionally eaten it. I say "intentionally" because everybody has probably consumed some of it, as it's used on grains and other foods to control insects. I see that you left the same note on the talk page of the user who made those points in their review. Yes, you're correct that you, as a first-time nominator, are exempt from the QPQ requirement. I've added the "ready for a new review" icon to your response on the nomination template and pinged the reviewer there. Hopefully they'll respond soon. If they don't, you can ask for a new reviewer, either on the nom page or at WT:DYK. As for my only part in this: no, my removal of the {{DYKnom}} credit doesn't have any effect on the nomination's status. I think the main thing you got wrong was when you said "my knowledge of English is not good". The article looks good to me; I made some tweaks, mostly fixing a few MoS things or typos or tense, plus adding some categories. Of course, feel free to undo or redo anything I did. Ideally, I'd like to see more of it referenced to more sources, and the sources should include more information. Please see WP:BAREURLS. I would have taken care of them myself if they were in English, but since they're not, I thought it better to leave that to you. I spend a lot of time at DYK, and the standard there is that every paragraph must have at least one inline reference. That's not a requirement in general, outside of DYK, but I would still recommend that you add more inline refs. And you may want to consider submitting the article to DYK; if you do, remember to nominate it within a week of moving it to article space.  MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM  01:55, 17 December 2021 (UTC)

By far, the most frequent and most automatable DYK edit I found in my contributions is MOS:NBSP, although its consensus is debatable (see the end of this section) and I only use it for Roman numerals I and II.

Less commonly, problems correctable with template {{`}} and related templates, and also template {{-?}}. WP:DYKIN, WP:DYKHN, and Wikipedia:Did you know/Proofreading#Specific errors to look for have some problems that were once common, a few of which look automatable, but somehow they don't come up any more. User:Art LaPella/Proposed Main Page proofreading bot may be helpful although some parts are outdated (2007). Art LaPella (talk) 05:04, 22 December 2021 (UTC)

Hehe, I'm a large part of the "somehow" that those problems don't arise any more – I patrol the nominations pages and fix most of the issues before the hooks get promoted. One minor thing that sometimes comes up is the promoter will omit the ellipsis and/or the space following it and/or the "that". Other than that, I can't think of any specific things that happen regularly. I do relatively little editing of the Preps, since I mostly do what I do pre-Prep. (BTW, the only &nbsp;s that I regularly add are before ellipses and en dashes, although I was too lazy to add one above in this reply, even though it would've been much less effort than typing this explanation that I didn't do it.)  MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM  08:06, 22 December 2021 (UTC)

My intentions thwarted

You said, "Victuallers, did you intend to credit another user?" Its good of you to ask Mandarax. Yes and I explained why in the nomination, but it appears that you and others decide who is creditted - I thought I might have a say. I'm really sad that the hook that I wrote for International Women's Day about women's rights has been replaced with a hook about football trivia... and that debate had been settled in the nomination. I had just written to Wikimedia UK, Lewes WFC to get their volunteer photographer an award and recognition and I had nominated him as UK Wikipedian of the year. ^*&*&*! I can't get used to the idea that you write a hook, you nominate it, you get approval .... and then a random group decide what will actually happen. (seems like No debate with lesser beings, just change it). I realise its the tyranny of the volunteer, but it de-inspires contributors like me and others. I have to spend today, back pedalling on our plans. So thanks as always for your work, and thank you for telling me as it would have been really embaressing to have found out later that some one has re-thought what was agreed, but its not good. First of all, I had absolutely nothing to do with the nomination or its promotion. My only involvement: I saw that a nonexistent user had been credited. Usually when a username is changed, there's a redirect to the new user page, but that's not the case here, so I deleted the erroneous credit and asked you who you intended to credit. Your assessment of how credits are determined is not correct. Of course you have a say. The credits you listed on the nom are the ones that were transferred to Prep, but we can't credit a user who doesn't exist. Instead of complaining that you don't have a say, you could have merely provided the correct name in response to my query. Fortunately, someone already took care of adding a credit for the renamed user. As for the hook, the one that was promoted was written by one of the other people you credit as co-creator of the article (not some random group). The promoter either didn't notice that the reviewer expressed a preference for the original hook, or overruled it with their own choice. In any case, I've replaced the hook with the one both you and the reviewer prefer. It would be helpful for your future nominations if you strike any hooks which you don't want to be used. yes and no - it wasn't when I took it last year, not when I made it a 2022 calendar pic but it is now, and I'm going to use it more with the 28 April concert (also on my talk), to be pictured on the Main page in a few days. bug with the hook lengths

Well, the rules say to count the first; in practice I think it's been the longest that gets counted (which seems the most logical), but it's never been applied consistently. Since it officially says to count the first one, people could contort their hook to put the shortest one first. (Of course, it doesn't actually define "first".) And people could include extra text in their links, knowing that it wouldn't count. Most of these may just be decided based on whether it seems to be about an acceptable length. the rose pic was taken on 11 Sep 2021, and this year was full of music that day, Tag des offenen Denkmals, not only singing in church and rehearsals for Verdi's Requiem, but two concerts at special places pictured, one a synagogue (pictured on its wall). Today three DYK: a piece we'll perform on Sunday, a violinist we heard in June playing the Berg Concerto, and a Youth Orchestra shaped by a conductor who recently died. No, if I had been patrolling recent changes, I definitely would have seen that it was vandalism and I would've reverted it. I never saw the diff; instead, I came to the page because of the linked misspellings. When doing that, I usually try to check for obvious vandalism, but in this case I missed it. I'm pretty sure I don't mess up very often, because when I do, I hear about it; in addition to your note, I was also notified about this edit at WP:Teahouse#vandalism. Help!

Got a second? Please help me out. I need a word. Imagine a straw, but made out of metal or hard plastic, that you can cut at length to function as a distancer (I invented that word--a spacer?) between (for instance) the head of a bolt and the nut. Well, "spacer" sounds good to me. Whenever I encounter that situation, I tend to just use as many washers as necessary (and usually have to throw in some nuts too, since I usually don't seem to have enough washers around), but a metal or plastic (nylon?) spacer would look more professional if that's a consideration, and they could presumably be cut to the desired length. "Spacer" is indeed the word! And I found what I needed at Lowes, in nylon. I'm hanging up a ceiling lamp but the box isn't level with the sheetrock. We just got that ceiling repaired and it's nice to not be looking up into a hole with broken plasterwork and plumbing. BTW nice signature, Mandarax. I'm glad you were able to find what you needed. Thanks about the signature. I thought there would be a plethora of blue and yellow signatures, but that never materialized, at least not that I've seen. One person (identified on their user page as a native Russian speaker) apparently doesn't like politically colored signatures. I decided to somewhat ungaudify my signature. I'm still using the official blue, but I've toned down the yellow considerably and used that subtler yellow as the full background. In my almost 18 years here, I've never been accused of edit warring before, not even a frivolous accusation like this ridiculously incorrect report in which they did virtually everything wrong. In their third revert (all against policy), they say "Take it to the talk page before this requires administrative action", and one and a half minutes later, they posted the above notice. What are you talking about? I didn't raise my voice at you. One can't use markup in edit summaries, so when one would normally use italics for emphasis, one must improvise, such as using caps. Emphasizing one word is not raising one's voice, and it certainly (note that I can use italics here) could not in any universe ever reasonably be considered uncivil. I went to the d'Orsay many times when I was there, but this year - sleeping between the Bastille Opera and the Philharmonie, and walking to both - it was a bit at the other end. - Today, music for a Marian feast, I learned that Yvonne Ciannella died, the soprano who impressed me in my first night at the opera, and as she died in March, sadly no Main page reverence is possible, - at least she had a good DYK, at a time when opera singers were considered interesting. I'm proud today that Christiane Hörbiger made it to that corner, and happy that we celebrate the birthday of Jean Sibelius again.
