This is all so exciting to read! I am loving this journey of discovery - gradually putting these women who were so influential in the world of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts back into the story!

My next two challenges are learning to make an info box and adding photos. This side of the Wikipedia journey is more of a challenge than the research and writing elements (my brain revolts at the technical language) but I am persisting. Before my first article I had no clue about anything, and now I'm citing with ease :-)

Slow down please

Hallo, thank you for adding an infobox to Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth, but ...

• She already had a "Short description"; please don't add a second one. I've expanded the existing one to "English textile collector and Girl Guiding pioneer (1886–1967)": 40 characters is a target, and this is 62, but it's got useful stuff there. Dates are recommended for inclusion in short descriptions.
• You added a link MBE which leads to a disambiguation page. I've corrected it to [[Order of the British Empire|MBE]]
• You added a link to Gawthorpe as her death place. That leads to a disambiguation page, and I don't think that Gawthorpe Hall is actually in any of the places called "Gawthorpe". I've corrected the link.

• There is an easy way to avoid linking to disambiguation pages: if you go to "Preferences", "Gadgets", and look under "Appearance" you'll see "Display links to disambiguation pages in orange" towards the bottom of the section. Select that tickbox, and whenever you Preview a page you'll be able to see whether you've accidentally linked to a disambiguation page. It's an easy way to edit better.

• {{Use dmy dates}} was already present, with the date April 2022 which indicates that in April 2022 the dates were all compliant with dmy format. You added {{Use dmy dates|date=July 2013}} which tells us that 10 years ago the dates were compliant.
• You added {{Use British English|date=August 2015}} which tells us to use British English, OK, but also that the article was checked for British English in 2015.
• The infobox doesn't need a "Caption" field unless there is a picture for which it is the caption. (Now if through your Guiding contacts you could get someone to donate an image of RK-S to Commons with the right copyright clearance for us to use it in the article, that would be really helpful!)

• It looks as if perhaps you are copying chunks of "boiler plate" code from other articles without either understanding how they work or checking whether they are already present. Please don't use code you don't understand, and please check all your editing.

Quite so - there's a lot to learn so it seems useful to mention things rather than just fix them ... I've got another posting half-written already but am doing a few bits of cleanup en route! No-one minds people getting things wrong at first - though some of us get a bit impatient with people who keep on doing the same stuff wrong however often it's pointed out (one particular editor likes adding spaces before all his references... grrrr.) Hi Pam, I have a question about what name to give someone.

Within her sphere of Guiding she was only ever known as Mrs H. S. Gresham, but if I can't use "Mrs" in her heading, then does H. S. Gresham become her husband?

Could I do Lilian Bessie Holmes (Mrs H. S. Gresham) or something like that?

Hallo Bethan, if you want to attract someone's attention (other than on their own talk page) it's safer to use {{ping}} than just mention their name - but luckily I've had this page on my watchlist.

It's tricky - see lengthy discussion at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Women_in_Red/Archive_112#Mrs_Pender_Chalmers. I think we probably need to name the article Lilian Bessie Gresham, ie the surname by which she was best known but her own forenames, with incoming redirects from all the other possibilities including Mrs H. S. Gresham and Mrs Henry Steven Gresham or whatever she was and possibly H. S. Gresham too, as well as her maiden name. The honours list here uses the form "Lilian Bessie Gresham", which helps justify it! Mrs Pender Chalmers was even more complicated because she'd used her maiden name as a bit-part actress, made her name later using her married name (and was it a double-barrelled name or not?), remarried so her grave was at a different name, etc. Lots of redirects is the answer. In the article you'd refer to her just as "Gresham". I hope that helps a bit. Article could start something like " Lilian Bessie Gresham ([dates], née Holmes, known as Mrs H. S. Gresham), was a ... Redirects

Hallo again

Another hobbyhorse of mine is redirects! I was looking at Mary Cuningham Chater and created a redirect from the short form Mary Chater, then searched on that form and found that you had added info about her to several pages, using the short form piped to the long form. Either she is most commonly known as "Mary Chater", in which case that should be the title of the article, or she is most commonly known by the long form, in which case that might have been the form to add to List of people from Littlehampton etc. As you left it, if someone else had added a link to Mary Chater it would have been a red link (and they might even have wasted time starting to create a duplicate article). Please make redirects from all likely variations of someone's name, to help readers to find the info they want, and to help editors avoid accidental duplication. What's really satisfying is adding a red link from the full "Sunday" version of someone's name and then finding that doing "What links here" shows up a previous red link in something formal like a list of award-winners, even if she never used her middle names in real life.

We also don't include "Lady" in article titles, so I've moved Lady Jane Akers-Jones to Jane Akers-Jones, and created a "surname" page at Akers-Jones even though she and her husband are the only name-holders at present. (If she had been the only one with the surname I would have redirected it to her).

Janet E Tobitt: Wikipedia always adds a full stop after initials, so I've moved her to Janet E. Tobitt, and made redirects from Janet Tobitt and Janet Evelyn Tobitt, and another from Tobitt ( to my surprise she's the only name-holder - there's a Charlotte, journalist, who is often cited but has no article or mention, but no-one else) I've done a bit of tidying up - Wikipedia only uses "straight quotes", both single and double, not "curly" or "slanted"; The Times gets italicised; section headings have initial capitals but no other except for proper nouns; use "24" rather than "24th" in dates; odds and ends. There seems to be a problem with the image but I'm not an expert in that area.

That was just picking a couple of the articles you list on your user page. They're all very impressie in the sheer amount of info and sources - I myself tend to create solid little stubs with lots of incoming redirects but not real extensive articles. Well done on being a serious editor!

Thanks so much Pam. Those first two articles were created by a friend whilst I got to grips with just the research and citations. I didn't know how to change Mary to just Mary Chater, but that's perfect. He also added the dots after Janet's middle name - I had no idea (still don't, clearly).

My focus and passion is getting the biographies of these women onto the world stage, so the Wikipedia edit elements are all hugely alien to me. I am so incredibly out of my comfort zone, and rather lonely. The chap who helped me with Mary and Janet is now in his final year at University, so I feel I have taken enough of his time!

I will endeavour to take in all your advice - and hope I will Do Better next time. Thanks again,

More editing tips

Hallo again, I was alerted that you had linked to Lady Lee Steere from the article Eva Julius which you created. It is a disambiguation page - there were three women of that title. Whenever you make a link it's worth checking to see that it goes to the page you intend.

There is an easy way to avoid linking to disambiguation pages: if you go to "Preferences", "Gadgets", and look under "Appearance" you'll see "Display links to disambiguation pages in orange" towards the bottom of the section. Select that tickbox, and whenever you Preview a page you'll be able to see whether you've accidentally linked to a disambiguation page. I find it very helpful.

Looking at the Eva Julius page after I fixed that link, I noticed another couple of things:

• Wikipedia doesn't use "5th" etc in dates - just plain 5 July 1972 - I've corrected it in lead and infobox
• When birth and death dates are known, even if just the year, they are shown as a range, rather than specifying "born" or "died". I've fixed it.
• Wikipedia uses straight quotes, both single and double, and never curly/slanted ones. I've fixed all those I spotted in that article, but please check that you're using the right sort of quotes in future. Thanks.

Re: her date of death, do you mean her birth? Or do I need to include a citation for her date of death? That would be fairly easy, however,

she was born in NZ and I had no luck finding anything beyond the year.

Out of interest, how does a page get nominated? I've written a few biographies now, and I'm wondering how something makes the cut?

Proper way to insert images in infoboxes

Hello @BJCHK. I am @Archer1234. I noticed your recent edit to Lady Mary Trefusis where you added an image to the infobox. I want to let you know that the way you added the image was not done according to Wikipedia's Manual of Style (see WP:INFOBOXIMAGE).

When adding an image to an infobox, thumbnails should NOT be used. Simply supplying the file name will work. For example, to use File:Image PlaceHolder.png, you can simply use |image=Image PlaceHolder.png. Captions should be specified with the |caption= parameter. Every infobox is different and the documentation for the infobox in question should be consulted for the proper parameters to match the image and caption.

To fix

Do not use the full image syntax:

|image=[[File:SomeImage.jpg|thumb|Some image caption]]

Instead, just supply the name of the image. So, in this case you can simply do:

|image=SomeImage.jpg

and optionally:

|caption=Some image caption.

Hello Andy. I think I have reverted all the references that made the citations go wonky - could you please check on them when you have a moment?

I have a follow up question, perhaps you can help me? My (incorrect) edits were to remove what I thought was an unnecessary book list at the end of the article, but it seems it is linked to the citation list. Is there anything I can do to do sort the references and delete the book list? I've only used inline citations so far, so don't understand this aspect of Wiki. Any help / pointers much appreciated.

Thanks for the feedback. It looks odd to see the titles without capitals - they are capitalised in the Guiding world - but understand the need here. Thank you also for the comment on my other articles. I have a massive backlog in need of a final edit, but there is only so many I can get my partner to do in a week!
