List of U.S. states and territories by population

I admit that I don't ever use RFPP and so don't know the usual requirements for protection/unprotection. But can you please explain why this page needed to be unprotected? Edits to population tables like this can be really subtle and hard to check. kennethaw88 • talk 04:29, 31 December 2017 (UTC)

kennethaw88 It was based on this response from the original protecting admin Gonzo fan2007. You are welcome to list it at RFPP to be protected again, but if you do so, please copy over the diff link I provided. When I look into the history now, I don't see where it was ever protected, only the log where I unprotected it. Something is missing in the article's history. The only way I came up with the above link was to search through the RFPP edit history. Again, I don't have any opinion either way on the future protection of the article. I will say that if I was looking at this objectively, it's only averaging about 10 edits a month. If that edit violates WP:DOX, then almost every single instance of {{Shared IP edu}} violates it as well. The intent wasn't to harass anyone or out anyone's identity, but to make a comment based on the WHOIS (FIRN = Florida Information Resource Network). I just didn't feel like broadcasting to the likes of some of the administrators that it was a school so they'd block it for six years over minor vandalism, and tagging it the usual way with {{Shared IP edu}} or {{Shared IP gov}} actually would have been more invasive. Template for Tony Hillerman

Hello, I made the template for Tony Hillerman, and tested it by using Preview in my sandbox. I used the Sue Grafton template as my model. I learned I save it to Template: Tony Hillerman and do it just like starting an article, and there is the rub. I started only one article, and did that by writing it in my sandbox and submitting it. Then it had to pass muster by several reviewers before it was posted. I think there is another way, but I do not know that way. How do I post my text to its title? Oh. I didn't realize you'd only created one article. OK, I just created User:Prairieplant/Hillerman for you. Open that, and paste the Tony Hillerman template beneath that user page template that is at the top. Work on the template there, and save it there as many times as you need to get it looking like you want it to. Once the template looks like you want, save it there one more time. Then do a Copy of the entire page, minus the user page template at the top. Open Template:Tony Hillerman, and paste the template in there. Then Save. — Maile (talk) 23:40, 24 January 2018 (UTC)

Are you referring to a navbox template? Don't know what the official policy is, but it's probably author-specific. Anne would get her own navbox, if there were articles created. Without the articles for the novels, a navbox isn't a good idea. Did you by any chance see the three PBS adaptations - Skinwalkers, A Thief of Time and Coyote Waits? Hello, just curious why you blocked this user? Only one of the edits given at ANI actually involved adding unsourced content. Were the other edits vandalism in some sense, whether hoaxing by adding stuff not in a cited source, or hoaxing by presenting fake sources, or something else? I didn't see a point in checking the content when you'd already done the block (I'd need to ask you anyway), so why try to determine your reasons when I could get your line of thought by asking you. I'm tempted to grant the unblock request, but I'm confused about the situation: everyone involved seems to be really solidly convinced that this user's been quite disruptive, so I'm guessing that I've missed something. Jzsj, no, you should never remove a past Good Article request once it has been reviewed. The article's history should always remain on the talk page. I believe you may be inquiring about Talk:Theology of Pope Francis; if you wish to make a new nomination, the old one stays as is and you add a new template at the top of the page, just like you would add it (per the GA nomination instructions page) if there hadn't been a previous nomination. I tagged a number of portals per CSD P2, during routine clean up. Note that speedy deleted pages can be restored upon request by an editor with the intent to work on them, or they can be recreated without having to get approval first. Our new tools make creating a new portal easy, and shouldn't take more than an hour or so from start to finish. That portal was mostly an empty shell. I hope this explanation has helped.

I've kept a record of all the (incomplete) portals that were speedy deleted, so that we don't lose track of them, so they can be remade later, after the automation process has been fully developed. Paki Buraq This was actually one of a larger batch of portals that were listed on Category:Candidates for speedy deletion. I deleted it as part of that. It was nominated for deletion by The Transhumanist, so that would be the editor to put your question to. — Maile (talk) 16:55, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

The portals I marked for speedy deletion were either empty shells, or only had 2 article excerpts or less in them. So, building a page from scratch will quickly have more meat than the portals that were deleted. Keep in mind that an admin can undelete a speedy deleted page upon request, if you'd rather work on that version rather than starting over. But, I think you will find that {{Box portal skeleton}} works much better these days than it used to. So it is probably easier to start over with that. ;) It generates the content of several of the sections automatically, and reduces reliance on subpages. Please read page 139 to 144 of the source I sent you. This is so interesting how my Wikipedia edits with User:W Nowicki made such an impact on this paper. Although it seems unfair of the author to alleged we tried to hide anything. I’m trying to find reliable sources to substantiate this family legend about Keanolani, the illegitimate daughter of Kamehameha V and Abigail Maheha. The quote from Cooke comparing Abigail Maheha to a dog and a sow especially sickens me. It is sad the more I dig into the lives of this family descended from Kuini Liliha. It seems Governess Liliha’s family was cursed from the get go. Her most famous husband Boki died at sea. She was an unsuccessful rival against Kaʻahumanu and Kīnaʻu and died with no political power. All three of her daughters led tragic lives either marred by unlucky marriages or sexual misconducts (according to Victorian sensibility that is) and her two sons were relatively obscure politicians during the monarchy. KAVEBEAR I read this as more of a university thesis, where theories are presented. Is there a living descendant to Kamehameha somewhere in Hawaii? Would DNA bear that out? Would such a person hide in the shadows, or come forth to publicly claim Hawaiian rights to stolen lands? The author takes a leap of a conclusion - sidestepping WP standards on sources - "presumably Native Hawaiian Wikipedia authors whose vividly detailed but surprisingly little-known accounts of their ancestors’ experiences at the school have been edited out of the official Wikipedia articles" How would we know that anybody is who they claim to be on Wikipedia? Kind of an unintended smile at, "a kahuna (Hawaiian priest or expert) from Maui prophesied that all who entered the school would die." Surely, there is more to what the kahuna said. Yes, true. I kind of get the point her point that the edits were removed because it solely based on oral traditions. But then again oral traditions are hard to prove. Are there living descendants of Kamehameha I? This is a question I have disputed with myself. DNA is not possible since testing on Hawaiian royal remains would all hell would break loose and we still have no clue where the king is buried. I originally thought no because the conventional history was that the Kamehamehas died with Pauahi and Albert Kunuiakea. Claimants like call this conventional narrative a myth. No one in the early territorial days seem to dispute this and no one claimed direct descent from Kamehameha I. The most prominent self-style royals individuals like Emma DeFries claimed collateral descent rather than direct descent. Even a few years ago Kahu Bill Maiʻoho (a man with connection to the recognized alii of the monarchy) once said all the descendants of Kamehameha are gone and was rebuked by another person for saying that. Studying the newspapers from Hawaii, this has all changed since at the least the 80s or 90s where more and more individuals claim Kamehameha descent. I forgot which article it was but a person talked about alii coming out of then woodworks to describe the phenomena. There are certainly a lot of claimed descendants today and a few of the lines that I have since discovered have semblance of validity like Kamehameha V’s illegitimate daughter, but most seems to be connected to obscure (in the sense they had no political role or were regarded as important during the monarchy) lines from Kamehameha I. Actually, I'm rather glad there will (probably) never be allowed DNA testing on the royal remains. Back in the 1980s, USA Pres. Zachary Taylor was exhumed, because there had always been rumors he was poisoned. I remember thinking how sad it was that an American president could not rest in his own grave. So, they tested after exhuming his body and said he was not poisoned. Not to be deterred, the conspiracy theorists say the tests were flawed. Imagine if this were allowed on Hawaii's royal family. There would be no end to the nonsense if it was allowed even once. The reality ... if such a descendant of Kam I could be proven to be alive ... Would you be interested in creating a start article on Kalakaua's 1874-75 visit to the United States? I am working on Leleiohoku's article right now who served as Kalakaua's regent during his absence from Hawaii and thought it would be a good joint DYK nomination for November 17 (anniversary of the start the trip). Do you think there would be any importance in separating it from Reciprocity Treaty of 1875 and talking about the quirky details of his trip including his meeting with P. T. Barnum? Inkian Jason I don't normally do this COI editing. I find it visually confusing in the edit window. The citations, that is. My understanding is that you want the one paragraph section in Vox Media swapped with what you wrote. One editor objects to all the citations and says you only need 5. And they have suggested the 5. In the edit window (on my browser), it just looks like a mass of citations overwhelming the text. Difficult for me to differentiate. Below the last sentence, below the last editor who said they're too busy, please put in another version, the same text, but with only the 5 citations. Lizzie got her name from her husband, Kauai musician (Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame) and politician Alfred Alohikea. Don't know when he was born, or exact date of death. Oh, ho! Just scanned through a bit and didn't see Wikipedia credited. However, this book was probably being researched for years. I'll read when I get the chance. Celso Caesar Moreno is a classic case of the dual nature of man. He did stupid things, grandiose schemes. He financially bilked Kalakaua and and tried to sell the United States an island he didn't really own. And yet, he really seemed to care about the involuntary servitude forced upon Italian immigrants to the US, and tried to end the practice. I'm happy this book is out. Narrative of Kalakaua

I wonder how much objective truth there is to the oppositional narrative (the predominant one in English language source material) created by his opponent. When writing these articles, I find it hard to balance the imperialist narrative from the 1800s and the modern indigenous scholarship which in general worships the Hawaiian monarchs and gloss over their faults or the complicated politics behind the kingdom. This is a concern (for any subject matter) higher up the review chain, especially at FA. I understand what you are saying, and it's a concern with many subjects as political correctness overtakes the public narrative. On both sides of any issue, any public hero, is an agenda from whoever is telling the story.

Liliuokalani is a bit easier, since she was very vocal and gave her perspective. Much more has been written about her, I think. Kalakaua has been some surprises for me. I'm finding as I research the current article, that he personally felt a connection to the missionaries and whaling history of Hawaii. There was more to this man than the party animal darling of the sugar barons. There was a deep part of him that defied all expectations, and dug his heels in on Hawaiian culture. But, you know, human beings tend to reinvent their heroes and events into their own ideals. And then another generation comes along and says, "No ... that wasn't how it was ... OK, I have now listened to the whole story you linked. I wonder if Reddit people read the world tour article, because the majority of this story sounds a lot like what we wrote. Or ... it could just be a coincidence. Just in case, it's motivation to complete this article on the reciprocity state visit. Like the people talking in that story, I am somewhat stunned by the lack of knowledge today's Hawaiians have of their own history, assuming that was accurate. Perhaps Hawaiians are more focused on the theft of their land than they are about the monarchy history. Ironic that James Haley contributed to this story, because he has also done much for Texas history. But the contrast between the two cultures, is that (IMO) Sam Houston left a very large boot print across Texas. He was a flawed, slave-owning man, who probably had more governmental and military sense than his contemporaries. I have always felt that Spanish/Mexican Texas was remade in the image of Sam Houston, and in many aspects remains so today. KAVEBEAR how am I supposed to determine which is which? There is no Wikipedia tool that detects that, as far as I know. Normally, if the amount copied is significant, it should have a Template:Copied on the new article's talk page. Otherwise, there is no way to determine what is not copied. Also, just as a handy tool that I use, you might want to load DYKcheck tool to your common.js - it will tell you how old an article is, date of expansion, etc. But it goes by date and does not distinguish if part of the new text was copied from another article. For instance, on Mary Pittman, it tells me:

• Prose size (text only): 9298 characters (1524 words) "readable prose size"
• Article created by KAVEBEAR on September 2, 2018
• Article moved from User:KAVEBEAR/Mary Pitman Ailau on September 3, 2018
• Assuming article is at 5x now, expansion began 114 edits ago on September 2, 2018

Hawaii women in politics

Do you know if any women served in the Hawaii territorial legislature between Rosalie Keliʻinoi in 1925 and Elsie Hart Wilcox in 1932? They would have to have been representatives instead of senators since Wilcox was the first female senator. Clarice Bromley Taylor

Have you read much about or by Clarice Bromley Taylor (1896-1963)?[7] She was a columnist for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and wrote the weekly column “Tales About Hawaii” from the late 1940s to the early 1960s. I’ve cataloguing a lot to these columnists with clippings such as Emma Ahuena Taylor and her mother Mary Fayerweather Montano since they give a publish version of the oral traditions not mentioned in the written text. Taylor was not connected to the events of the monarchy like these women but seems to have collected stories from old kamaanina families. I slightly intimidate by Taylor’s enormous amount of work. Elvis Presley

Re: Talk:Elvis Presley on film and television. Thanks for trying to help, but I still don’t get it. I’m sure the “non-musical” definition is sound (ie solid), and was determined 60 or 70 years ago. So why is a film with Elvis (of all people!) singing on-screen, not classed as a musical? I’m sure I’ve seen some “musicals” (in the 2000’s) with only 1 or 2 songs (... but I can’t recall them).

Any comment will be helpful.

Easiest thing in the world. On any article, to go Page/History. Among the links above the revisions list is "Fix dead links". Click on it, and it takes you to "Analyze a page". It will probably tell you "Login Required". You'll see a smaller link (upper right on my skin" that says "Not logged in". Click on that, and it lets you log in. Allow permission to IABotManagementConsole. I always click the little check box that says "Add archives to all non-dead references (Optional)" Then click the button "Analyze". KlausVonVilver It's fine. I added the Hawaii project banner, and changed all to Start class. Let me give you some advice. Whatever project you personally think your work is related to, feel free to add that project's banner on the talk page. That's what I do to mine, even way back when I was a beginning editor. Nobody ever objected. If you believe it's no longer a stub, then change it. The classes are only guidelines on how much work some editor thinks needs to be done. You're an editor, and you'd probably be able to judge it yourself. The exception might be the Military History project, once it gets past Start or C class. They have their own ratings scale, and they are the most active project that I know of. If you ever need guidance on any article that is related to their project, you are more likely to get a quicker answer from them. If you have not done so, I recommend joining that project, and/or signing up for their newsletter (see my copy in a section above). Regarding this, sorry for the mix-up. I had noticed new activity from the sock farm that had been reverted by others, but the edit summaries had not used the usual pending changes syntax, so I failed to notice that protection is still in place--but I should have checked that directly, so that's egg on my face. I'll attend to the proxies in appropriate spaces for now and then renew the page protection discussion if (or, realistically, when) the socks renew their activity following expiration of the current protection. Candidly, I think there's an argument to be made for changing the protection to indefinite before it expires, since the disruption has been carried out like clockwork for ages and the sockmaster is so dogged about it that they are trying to leverage the content in even while protection is in place--but that said, I appreciate that this is an atypical way for RPP requests to be processed, so I'll adopt the standard wait and see approach. Hello, Maile66. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

		Hello Maile66, Early in A Child's Christmas in Wales the young Dylan and his friend Jim Prothero witness smoke pouring from Jim's home. After the conflagration has been extinguished Dylan writes that Nobody could have had a noisier Christmas Eve. And when the firemen turned off the hose and were standing in the wet, smoky room, Jim's Aunt, Miss. Prothero, came downstairs and peered in at them. Jim and I waited, very quietly, to hear what she would say to them. She said the right thing, always. She looked at the three tall firemen in their shining helmets, standing among the smoke and cinders and dissolving snowballs, and she said, "Would you like anything to read?"
