Hello 李博杰. Could you tell me the difference between "全国游泳锦标赛" and "全国游泳冠军赛" ? I want to translate this two words into English. In the machine translation, both are translated into the same words "National Swimming Championships".--NAZONAZO (talk) 12:15, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Signature length

Please see WP:SIG#Length and modify it to be 255 characters. Technically, you aren't supposed to be subst'ing it either, but as long as you keep it 255 characters or less you can do so. –xenotalk 07:14, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

I have cut off about 220 bytes, however am still over. I wish to maintain my design (including colours, etc), however due to the complexity of HTML, it would be rather difficult to keep it so. Currently my sig is physically no more than 4cm in length (when viewed in 1440x900), and so I would like to ask if it would be possible for it to be only over by 40-odd bytes. Also note that Chinese characters are two-byte characters (although this would not have too much an effect). Additionally, much of the extra length is due to the HTML coding for the font to be small. If I were to slice off the next possible section, my sig would become big, ugly and space-cluttering when viewed physically, possibly resulting in a worse-off result than originally intended. Currently it is as small as possible while keeping the current aesthetics. I don't believe that being over by 40-odd bytes due to aesthetics is a strictly bad thing, as it is not libellous, offensive, a hinderance to the Wikipedia server, an annoyance to other users, or disapproving in any way. There are also many other users with much more complex sig designs, yet are physically the same length as that of mine. -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email 07:34, 28 June 2009 (UTC)
Don't worry about it. Some people might be annoyed, but it's just a guideline, you're not killing anyone or anything. You always have the choice to use a signature that not everyone likes. As for subst'ing, I believe Garden also uses a subst'ed signature? rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 13:43, 28 June 2009 (UTC)
Garden has a subst'ed sig, but keeps it compliant with sig restrictions. It's better now, but I still think you could save space by getting rid of the "email" button. Most wiki users (at least as far as I've seen) would sooner post to your talk page then email you straight away off a talk page contrib. YMMV. best, –xenotalk 15:19, 28 June 2009 (UTC)
That's a good point; at least as for me, I rarely send or receive wiki e-mail. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 15:26, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

RS question

Any idea if this is a reliable source? It's from dayoo.com, which I'm not familiar with; the first page of the article is here. Since it's about plastic surgery and stuff, I wanted to be careful about using it in any BLP articles; I considered posting at RS/N but figured most people there would not be able to read it. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 16:42, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

Oops, never mind, it looks like that is an article that's been widely reprinted on news websites without the original being credited (nothing new for mainland news :P). The earliest one I can find is this, which credits the source as Eastern Daily (itself). rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 19:00, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

Fun with numbers

Looking at Chinese numbered policies made me aware of a couple things that might make fun article projects. 四大件 and 四小花旦 both have articles on zh-wiki but not here. 四小花旦 might require a lot of research and digging around to find anything interesting to say other than "this is who they are", but 四大件 is probably pretty easily notable (I remember it from my 2nd-year Chinese textbook :P).

I also added a bit at the bottom of that article about numbers in chengyu. I don't have any sources handy; I have an old chengyu dictionary at home which might have some helpful stuff in its introduction (once I take the time to read it—I'm a slow reader in Chinese), but I won't be back there until early August. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 02:51, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

Urumqi 'cyber wars' and your aunt's ka-yoo ka-yoo

(sorry about "ka-yoo ka-yoo", that's just how my ex-girlfriend's mom from Wuhan always pronounced QQ and I have never quite gotten it out of my head)

I agree 100% with your comments at the Urumqi riots talk page, and the reports of tech-savvy ultra-modern Netizens facing off against the evil Chinese GFW dictatorship are always way over-hyped. Posting things on YouTube and Flickr suddenly makes people the cyber-geniuses of today's modern Internet era? Please...these articles always sound like they're written by my grandma. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 19:10, 6 July 2009 (UTC)

By the way, do you have any idea who this user might be? Judging by [1] and [2], he seems to have it out for you, which suggests to me that it might be a sock of someone you've had a dispute with before. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 22:27, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
I'd have no idea. Possibly either some nationalist editor from a Turkic country, or an anti-China editor from the States, either way both anti-China, pro-independence. It seems that, by looking at the user's contribs, the only two edits ever made were the ones you noted. Possibly a smelly sock, in my opinion. Barnstar

  The Ürümqi Barn"star"
Thanks for all your work maintaining the article July 2009 Ürümqi riots during its time on the main page. This has been a difficult and thankless task, working at a frenetic pace for 4 days straight so far (I, for one, have been getting very little sleep), and it's only been thanks to coordinated efforts and discussion from numerous editors that the article has been kept as neutral and informative as possible. This is the most collaboration I've done, with the largest number of editors once, since I have joined Wikipedia, and I think the results are showing; while it's not perfect, when my friends and family ask me about what's going on in Urumqi, I have been more comfortable recommending this article than any other source. The work is far from over, but now that this article is off the main page I think it's finally time to thank the editors Seb az86556, Colipon, Jim101, Ohconfucius, Benlisquare, Simonm223, and Jinhuili for all their contributions; while we had disagreements, I think each of these editors has been particularly active and has made real efforts to improve the article.rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 20:07, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

CSD tagging

Hi, Benlisquare. First, thanks for doing your patrol work. I wanted to remind you to be a little more careful when tagging articles for speedy deletion. You recently tagged Colin Sims for a G1 "patent nonsense/gibberish" speedy, but that's more for an article filled with random text. An A7 "fails WP:BIO" tag would have been the correct reason to speedy the page. I did delete the article, but it would be helpful to other admins if you're a little more careful in tagging these pages. Thanks again for your hard work. Parsecboy (talk) 11:35, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

That edit was not making a statement at all. It does not matter what comes first in a sentence, it does not rectify that something actually came first. Does it actually matter on how the sentence structure may show a discrepancy in the passage of time? That edit was merely to correct the sentence structure, and clarify the point on Baekje. It did not claim in any way what came first, if you closely read it. No dates or time-based words were used, try not to make prior assumptions, WP:AGF, and be cautious of alternate interpretations. -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email 00:43, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

(Regarding Baekje) @Blue Ghost, please provide citations, so that we can verify the edits in question. @Cherry, I'd doubt that there was any advanced notion of Japanese nationalism back in 720AD. A biased view may be in all historical documents from any side or country, but I'd doubt nationalism is the problem, given that most of Japan's nationalism formulated after the Meiji Restoration. I don't see how nationalism links with this. -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email 23:43, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

Secondary Sources

Yes, I am aware that a lot of articles are quoting directly from the original, untranslated historical texts. I think most people are in agreement that this is not appropriate referencing, and good articles, such as the one on the Han Dynasty do not fall into that trap despite all that's been written on that subject over the ages. As a single person I cannot rectify every instance of WP:OR, and I admit it is often far easier to create your own interpretation than to dig around for good sources. Tagging all those articles with OR is probably too tedious and excessive, but I think replacing the primary reference cites with secondary sources is always a good thing. Regarding your recent comment on my talk page, what exactly would you suggest doing with these pages? Kind regards, Chu Jetcheng 04:46, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for noticing that. I was adding the image in order to emphasize the difference between so-called old character patterns (舊字形) and new character patterns (新字形).
Also, in this image created by you, I noticed that in the first line there are mixed occurances of OCPs and NCPs, resembling those used in Hong Kong. I would however suggest using a more canonical Ming (a.k.a. Song) typeface, presumably one from Taiwan.

Edit summaries

Hey Benlisquare,

While the IP editor here is clearly in the wrong and didn't have the right to undo the redirect, your edit summary was probably a bit over the top, especially considering that he didn't get a warning (as far as I can tell, unless you have reason to think this is a sock of an editor who has been involved in these articles before) explaining the AfD consensus. Of course, you know all this by now (and I've made the same mistake before too), but of course just try to remember not to let the stress get to you; this is one of those situations where if the IP keeps reverting then it will be clear who's violating consensus here, so you don't need to stress yourself out trying to stop him. For now, I've left him a message asking him to go to DRV if he has a problem with the way the AfDs for this article were carried out, and if the articles are reverted more without DRV then I'll protect them. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 15:15, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Comments made by other users

Please do not modify comments made by other users at article talk pages. Doing so is against WP:CIV policy. If you think the comment was inappropriate for any reason, please ask an advice from an uninvolved administrator. Thank you.Biophys (talk) 01:15, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

There was nothing wrong with this; pasting the full text of an article into a talk page takes up a lot of space and is generally not appropriate or necessary. You could just give a permalink to the article instead, which takes up far less space. And, as a side note, Benlisquare didn't modify your content, he just collapsed it behind a "show" box. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 01:23, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
This text does not exist in the present version of article Web brigades - pleas compare. Making someone's comment hidden is a modification. This user left me a message that he is going to delete my comment completely - I reacted to this.Biophys (talk) 01:33, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
I know the text doesn't exist, that's why I said you can give a permalink to the appropriate version. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 01:39, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
Again, as per WP:TALK and WP:NOT, I have the entitlement to delete your addition to the talk page, as talk pages are not used for content repositories, they are for discussing articles. I am providing you with nine (9) days to copypaste your text somewhere else, if you wish to do so, so that you do not lose any data you wish to keep. It also appears that you have a misinterpretation of the WP:CIV policy, which only applies to talk comments which fit into the category of actual legitimate talk, as defined in WP:TALK; creating a repository does not come under WP:CIV in this case, but rather WP:NOT, or even "If a rule prevents you from improving Wikipedia, then WP:IAR", which completely negates WP:CIV in this case, as 18,000 bytes on a talk page which is clearly not talk is disruptive to general processes on Wikipedia, and so such action by me is unquestionably non-controversial. -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email 05:31, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Anti-Ming bias in China?

I've immigrated out of the Fatherland since I was six, but I've noticed that Chinese seem to have a negative perception of the Ming and some even support the barbaric rule of the Yuan and Qing over the Ming. This is not only unjust but also a great insult to Chinese culture; if you have read the Ming article, you will notice that it is one of China's golden ages, perhaps the greatest one, better than even Han and Tang. If Ming had not been taken over by Manchu, perhaps it will be Anglo saxons immigrating to China rather than me immigrating out. Multilingual support to Japan-Korea Undersea Tunnel article, can you assist?

Hi Benlinsquare −greetings! I noticed your contributions to today's featured article on Chinese classifiers and would like to see if you could contribute some maintenance to the simplified Chinese version of the Japan-Korea Tunnel article. The English version, which I contribute to, has undergone several updates which have not been reflected in the simplified version. I consider that article highly important −if the project is given the green light to go ahead it would likely have important implications and contributions to the security and economy of the entire region of northeast Asia. I'm also seeking a Russian translation of the article, as I believe that Russia would also benefit from the project. Thanks if you can assist..... Commons:Deletion requests/File:Kim Jong-un age 16.jpg

is about an image you uploaded which was transfered to Commons. Also a template you created, Template:CopyrightedFreeUse-DPRK was deleted from Commons because it is fair use. It should be marked as fair use here on en.wikipedia as well. --Martin H. (talk) 19:23, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

Fair use is permitted on EN Wiki however. Refer to Template:Non-free fair use in, Template:Non-free film screenshot, etc. Also, that image should not have been transferred to Commons. That is human error that is beyond me. -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email 00:21, 10 October 2009 (UTC)
Of course it is, but at the moment Template:CopyrightedFreeUse-DPRK is not a fair use tag, it is a "CopyrightedFreeUseTag". This term suggests that the copyright holder gave permission that everyone can use his work in terms of free use, something like the free copyright template Template:CopyrightedFreeUse or even on Commons commons:Template:CopyrightedFreeUse - including commercial use e.g., something close to public domain. You should change it and sort it into Category:Non-free Wikipedia file copyright tags. --Martin H. (talk) 00:54, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi, Ben! Thanks for finding and tagging the articles belonging in scope of WikiProjects Russia and Soviet Union. I have a small favor to ask, though—when adding the tags, could you, please, spell out the names of the projects completely (i.e., use "WikiProject Russia" and "WikiProject Soviet Union", not WPRUSSIA and WPSU)? Thanks for the feedback. Well what I put is documented in the article itself but I understand that due to the current centre-right nature of the party this could have been polemic, but as the party actually had two phases dominated by two opposite international and political alignments I thought it was worthy of notice but I understand this may be misleading to people unacquainted with the issue but I thought it should be put to community experience beyond sandbox, so thank you for your feedback.

Re: self-created image

First of all, it is a video taped with a cellphone-camera. The video clip is indeed my own work, because I lived there, as you may read about me at Ccyber5. I had attempted to have my video converted into .ogv format, but I didn't have an available software on my PC. So I captured some snapshots from the clip, and made them a montage-image through Photoshop. If you don't trust me, you can see this video [10], which is the orginal work on my flickr, where I've also uploaded an variant montage. My flick account is ccyber3. ps: I failed many times previously when I attempted to upload my variant work (vertical montage) onto either the Commons or Wikipedia because of unknown reason (probably GFW). Thank you for your attention! Ccyber5 (talk) 14:50, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for your instructions and it is really helpful. To be honest, it was the first time that I had tried to upload a video to Wikipedia or Commons, when I saw its rarely-seen permitted formats, so I haven't learned about these useful tips. Thanks for your help. Ccyber5 (talk) 15:21, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

RE: Xian H6K

Thank you for your message. I have not seen any news (and couldn't find any) regarding this "variant" from the Chinese side. Also, I believe that the H6 is still currently in service as the leading PLAA’s "Strategic bomber." In the age of ICBMs & Cruise Missiles, I don't see why the PLAA would outfit another, brand new aircraft to carry just the CJ10 where the current H6s are perfectly up for the task. If the “variant” contains very little modification, I would think the current H6 page can be expanded to be added with the additional information. I believe a merge (H6K ---> H6) is gonna take place soon unless there is additional information, outlining a significant difference between the 2. TheAsianGURU (talk) 19:58, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, but your honor does not matter here and you do NOT have the right to attack people if they attack you. Don't you think half the people here are attacked for some random reason such as ethnicity? WP is NOT the place for such fight. If an user has attacked you the right thing to do e give him a warning on his talk page, or if it is a re-incidence, report him to the administrators, who will look at the case and possibly block him. If you attack back, you are at the risk of being blocked yourself. Avoid fight, don't fight back, and keep Wikipedia a peaceful place. Thank you. Uirauna (talk) 11:59, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
It's funny how it seems you are defending User:NederlandsNederlands' sockpuppetry by putting all the attention on my counter-attack. Uirauna, a user should have every right to say "go to hell" to a user who uses an ethnic slur on them. Ethnic slurs are totally unacceptable and little swear words don't even compare. Furthermore, the account that made the ethnic slur was clearly a throwaway account made for no purpose other than to troll; such an account should have been blocked on sight. Even from senior editors, ethnic slurs would be cause for serious concern; from a throwaway account, such behavior should be cause for just cutting the cord. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 17:09, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
I agree with you on most points. But an attack against you DOES NOT JUSTIFIES that you attack back. Everyone here is responsible for keeping the peace, and "go to hell" does not help that. Thatś why I just came to his talk page and wrote a "do not attack" message. Everyone gets "pissed off" about someone else's attitude, but we should still try to keep a cool head and to not engage in personal attacks. There is no "honour" in wikipedia, this is not a battleground. Thank you. Uirauna (talk) 17:22, 31 January 2010 (UTC)

Vietnamese numerals

Thanks for the heads-up about the article, it's interesting stuff. The "common usage" section of the table looked redundant to me so I BOLDly went ahead and got rid of it (it seemed to be doing nothing other than show which of the other columns was used more, so I figured it could be replaced by something like color—assuming that doesn't cause WP:ACCESS problems). But there's always a chance I was misunderstanding what that bit meant, so feel free to undo it if that was wrong.

By the way, if you're interested and have an opinion would you like to comment on the Urumqi riots FAC (here)? I remember you've been active at the talk page before, but haven't edited the article itself a lot, so I don't think it would be unfair or anything.

Consider deleting Chinese_fonts_juhuasample.PNG

Please consider deleting File:Chinese_fonts_juhuasample.PNG. Why?

  • It is an orphan.
  • Clerical script and seal script are written incorrectly.
  • Some characters in the text do not exist in clerical script and seal script.
  • The other information is covered in the other version of the image.

What would make it better:

  • Incorporating it into an article, relevantly.
  • Text that exists in all shown scripts, e.g. "天地玄黃宇宙洪荒"
  • Correct clerical script and seal script typefaces.
  • (Nitpicky) .svg
  • (Nitpicky) vertical orthography

I'm not so sure on deletion, but anyone may feel free to edit the image to their heart's content. If you think you have what it takes to improve the image, then go for it. I might find time to go back and have a look, but at the moment it isn't one of my priorities.

Arilang talk 06:37, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

Official U.S. policy is simply to note that Chinese (Taiwanese are ignored because they were powerless when the policy was made) on both sides of the Taiwan Strait say there is one China and that Taiwan is part of it, and to say that we're not in the mood to argue with either one of them.

The poster who claimed that the U.S. considers Taiwan part of China (to whom you replied "Zam") was wrong, The U.S. does not take an position on whether Taiwan is part of China. Readin (talk) 23:57, 14 March 2010 (UTC)

The Arena (MMA) Page

Benlisquare,

I apologize in advance if I am not following all protocols with your Talk page, but I am relatively new to Wikipedia and am not completely familiar with certain things like how to best communicate on the Talk pages and the different users who contribute to them. Since you clearly are an expert in this area, please help me correct whatever issues I need to do in the future.

As far as your concerns/comments, as well as those of others, I am a bit surprised. I created the page on The Arena because I am an avid follower of MMA and The Arena is one of the fastest growing MMA teams in the country and deserves inclusion in Wikipedia on these merits. Particularly given the fact that many of the MMA teams listed in Wikipedia are no longer as notable as The Arena is because the sport is so dynamic and much of the information regarding these teams and their fighters is non-current. Also, my interest in The Arena and its fighters qualifies me as a supporter of the gym/team, not as a conflict of interest.

As far as how I set up the page and what I included, I attempted to follow the format used for the other MMA team pages included in Wikipedia so The Arena MMA page would best fit in. So, if The Arena MMA page is promotional, then I imagine the other MMA team pages should be included in that category as well.

As far as verification of The Arena and its athletes...

1. The team is young and most newspapers do not cover much of MMA. In fact, I honestly do not think newspapers qualify as a reliable source for MMA info as much is reformatted from other sources. However, having said that, you can find recent mention of The Arena and its team members like Olympic Silver Medalist Stephen Abas at the following locations, among others.

http://www.fresnobee.com/2010/04/07/1887820/ex-dog-abas-sets-mma-dates-at.html

http://www.visaliatimesdelta.com/article/20100506/SPORTS/5060314/Olympic-silver-medalist-Stephen-Abas-successful-in-mixed-martial-arts-debut

Additionally, I have included several other online mentions of The Arena from sites that are more relevant to MMA such as:

http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/mma.cfm?go=news.detail&gid=228200

http://www.mmamania.com/2010/4/2/1402864/2004-olympic-silver-medalist

http://www.sherdog.com/news/news/Olympic-Silver-Medalist-Abas-Signs-with-Tachi-Palace-Fights-23624

http://www.doseofmma.com/3700/rani-yahya-constrictor-bjj-hl/

http://www.sherdog.com/news/articles/12-Questions-for-Cris-Cyborg-Santos-22251

2. There are also numerous videos available online of various fighters representing The Arena during their fights, notably Diego Sanchez (who has The Arena logo on his shorts, shirt, and banner) during his most recent fight against BJ Penn on 12/12/2009, as well as Cris "Cyborg" Santos during her last Strikeforce title defense against Marloes Coenen on 1/30/2010. These fights can be found online. Additionally, the UFC Countdown Video Segment for Diego Sanchez that was aired nationally on Spike TV prior to the fight was conducted at The Arena and clearly showed The Arena in the segment.

3. There are also other videos available on The Arena's website itself, as well as YouTube, from third parties such as Bad Boy Brands that show fighters such as Demian Maia (UFC) and Diego Sanchez (UFC) training at The Arena. These videos can be found here at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHEXvWGfnYA&NR=1 and: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xy1VNA7YLWQ and: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sx3IXyqXiLI

Additionally, there are videos actually produced by The Arena that clearly show Fabricio Camoes (UFC), Rodrigo Nogueira (UFC), Rani Yahya (WEC), Royler Gracie (4x BJJ world champ), Joe Duarte (Bellator), etc. training at The Arena. These videos are located at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xrUSGWN0BA and: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_lI8tccuxw

4. Finally, both mixedmartialarts.com (the official resource for all MMA fighter records) and sherdog.com (the largest, most recognized, and one of the oldest MMA sites in existence) has The Arena listed as an offical team. You can find the links here at:

http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/mma.cfm?go=home.link and:

http://www.sherdog.com/links

These two sites are tightly controlled and will not allow links to team sites that are not official and recognizable.

Given all this evidence that you can judge for yourself if you take the time to visit all the sites I have provided, particularly the online video locations (seeing is believing), I cannot understand how anyone could not regard The Arena MMA page as legitimate, as well as the actual gym itself.

I don't know how much the Wikipedia members who commented on the legitimacy of The Arena MMA page actually know about the sport of MMA, but there is absolutely no way these types of MMA athletes would be involved with The Arena if it was not 100% legitimate and deserving of recognition. Even independent Yelp reviewers mention this fact (see here at: http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-arena-mma-san-diego

Please let me know how to best improve the page if it actually needs to be improved given all the documentation I have just provided. Additionally, please share this information with the other Wikipedia members who made comments on the Talk Page as I am unsure how to communicate with everyone simulataneously.

Thank You,

Put Additional 3rd Party Verification Sources on The Arena MMA Page

Ok, so I think I am getting a little better at understanding the talk page concept. Additionally, I have gone through and placed several 3rd party verification sources on the actual The Arena MMA page indicating why it is noteworthy.

Also, as I mentioned, I don't know if any of the admins are fans of MMA and know the names and notoriety of the fighters who train at The Arena, but the fact that they do train there (proven by the video links I provided) is illustrative of why The Arena Gym / Team is noteworthy.

Finally, I read your message to Rjanag on his TP and I know you are busy, so I hope he gets a chance to read my detailed explanation on why The Arena MMA page is valid and that he actually checks out the links and the content contained there for himself. I also hope you get a chance to go through it yourself when you get a chance so you know what I am referencing. Thanks. Mmasource (talk) 09:04, 7 May 2010 (UTC)

The Arena MMA Page Discussion (Revised)

Benlisquare,

I have provided a large amount of 3rd party references on The Arena MMA page. I have also just provided a 10 point summary on the discussion page for the deletion of The Arena MMA page. As you were one of the original editors who argued for deletion, could you please take the time to read the points I made at this discussion? I am trying my best to play by WP rules and I would like to know if my points are being acknowledged. Thank you. Mmasource (talk) 06:47, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

Mmasource, that is up to the community to decide. As the nominator, I can not represent the views of all editors, and do not have the iron hand over the discussion process, as I am only one individual. It is up to the greater number of editors to decide whether your page is kept or not. Even if I were to intervene, my actions would be powerless and unable to override any decision made by the larger collective. I am not the sole decision-maker. -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email 10:19, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I understand that you are not the only voice in this discussion. I was just wondering if you could take the time to review the points I made in the discussion. I have asked the same of others. Perhaps once you have reviewed the new information, you might change your mind on your deletion recommendation? Wondering

I wonder if you ever lived in Taiwan and learn Chinese history / ethnology to state so simply "CHINA IS ONE 我愛中華" and be so bound to a flag and national ideology. Yug (talk) 08:55, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

Perhaps, just like the foreign-born Chinese next door down the road, I'm just optimistic. I don't count on a split happening anytime soon, and don't see how a split would help anyone. In the arguments that come up as a result of politics, do the ends really outweigh the means? I've never lived in Taiwan, so I cannot argue for the people of Taiwan, however seeing the attitudes of the diaspora here in Australia, once you remove the politics, there is a strong unity that forms between Han people, regardless of whether they are from Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Shaanxi or Taiwan. -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email 11:56, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

I should prob. ask you this on facebook, but then again I don't go on there much. Just curious, if you were born in Australia, how come your Chinese is so good? Even though my parents are bilingual, they never spoke English at home. I would speak Mandarin Chinese exclusively at home, and English when outside. Hence, I could speak Mandarin perfectly, even with all the local speaking habits and slang of Beijingers (such as lazy vowels that are so prominent in the Beijing dialect), as well as Australian English, although I could not write. I did not begin the learning process for reading and writing Chinese characters until I was about 15 or so, generally it is still something that I can touch up on. As long as I have an electronic dictionary (i.e. my phone or PC) and/or a Chinese IME, I can read/write 100% of most texts using pinyin input; if I were to handwrite Chinese though, I'd probably have the skill of a 3rd grader :( -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email 05:02, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
Ah I see. That's pretty damn impressive already. I actually immigrated to Vancouver when I was about 10 years old (I grew up in China until then), and I didn't further my Chinese learnings in any official way (i.e.: never went to Chinese school or anything). Anyways I only asked you that because I thought it was quite impress the kinda of mastery you had on Chinese (verbal and written) and also on Chinese culture, even though you were born in Australia. So, it is a bit hasty to change the order. Please wait for the result of overall 2010 available, before editing the change. No one disagree with the China's 2nd position in 2010. Thank you. ―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 11:15, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

Hello MR Herp Derp

I have edited, but I also discussed it with the parties involved. Contradictory articles are not good for anyone. If you beleive you are superior you will not make an article stating you are a subordinate without clarifying it. The other seem to realize the contradiction and we are trying to figure out the wording to make the article make sense. Thanks for your input. --Objectiveye (talk) 07:12, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

What contradictions? You're trying to force irrelevant information into an article. How does the Japanese Imperial family relate to anything? -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email 07:26, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

You guys are talking about superior race idea, Koreans after WWII would only continue to believe they are superior if they thought they were the progenitors of Japan. Remember this concept was from Japan in the 20th century according to the article. no Superior race would think they were a subordinate and still think they were superior. By adding these archeological finds we can at least make the article seem logical as to why they feel superior. --Objectiveye (talk) 08:19, 17 August 2010 (UTC) Also I was adding why I voted to delete, without being able to explain why, why would you vote a certain way --Objectiveye (talk) 08:21, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

Let me just say that I will not intervene in this article after the deletion discussion. Benlisquare did a relatively good "chemo therapy". I just have an uneasy spot in discussion with depressing historical facts that plague Asia or the whole world. (It is) Not that I'm a minority of hardcore Korean nationalist. No harm done. It is a sensitive subject so I think it is wiser to put a notice in the article. Komitsuki (talk) 14:44, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

Some POV vandals trying to suppress info about the separate evolution of Han Chinese

Hi!

I just to wanted to let you know that I tried many times to post the information pertaining to the separate evolutionary lineage of the Han Chinese on the Han Chinese article page as was recommended to me. Unfortunately I have encountered a few users who are trying to suppress this information from being posted on the page. They obviously are trying to push the "politically correct" POV that "all humans are descended from the common black African Ancestor" despite the DNA and morphological evidence showing that to be untrue. Violating users: Multivariable continually reverts my edits and Jayron32 has illegally "protected" the page in an attempt to keep others from posting the peer reviewed scientifically proven information about the separate evolution of Han Chinese from Homo Pekinensis. Please advise on how to deal with these people.

Best Regards! Thanks! --72.215.69.43 (talk) 04:30, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

Are you referring to 屌? I am aware that in Cantonese, Diu (Cantonese) means fuck, but in Mandarin (prodominantly Taiwanese Mandarin, although its usage has spread to the mainland as well), diao is a slang word for "cool" or "awesome". It has a completely different meaning in Mandarin, and is generally not considered a swear word, although it is a form of informal slang. See Mandarin slang#Positive connotations. {{JapanEmpireNavbox}}

Hi-There are some problems with your reversal, first of all, there are over 5 links that are redirects, so those won't show on the navbox when on the corresponding pgs. I also was ordering the box both chronologically and alphabetically. The problems with piping the links are that some of the meanings may be obscured. If you think they should still be piped, I'll be glad to do that right now. Would prefer your input and help, rather than reversal. --Funandtrvl (talk) 13:55, 6 September 2010 (UTC)

In addition, I was fixing the code, where the category was outside of the noinclude tags. --Funandtrvl (talk) 14:04, 6 September 2010 (UTC)
Thing is, without piping, we have lines such as "...of the Empire of Japan" repeated over and over, making the template almost three times as large. Now, although this might only seem to be a minor problem on larger resolutions, keep in mind that not all people have the same kind of computer, and that in lower resolutions, the whole thing looks like a mess. Many redundant lines that repeat can be removed without altering the meaning too much; leaving entire article titles as links is unnecessary. Not only does the repetition increase the length of an article, it is also difficult to navigate and poses WP:ACCESSIBILITY issues. As for alpha/chrono ordering, syntax correction and redirects, feel free to fix that, and I apologise for making a rash movement so quickly without properly explaining myself. There was nothing wrong with fixing those. -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email 14:05, 6 September 2010 (UTC)

Where you learned Chinese?

Most of overseas Chinese do not know how to speak Chinese, where you mug up Chinese language?219.151.156.37 (talk) 14:19, 8 September 2010 (UTC)

Quote: "Most of overseas Chinese do not know how to speak Chinese" - citation needed, source please. I personally believe that to be entirely false. Can you prove what you say? Such a statement has little logic; the term Overseas Chinese (海外华侨) includes **one** migrants who were born in China and settled overseas, these make up a large number, and of course they can speak Chinese; **two** the second and third generations (i.e. children and grandchildren) of these people - this includes me - generally Chinese is taught by the parents to the children. My parents taught me Chinese because they had the nationalistic belief that Chinese is an important language to learn, and I share that view, and hence I too will teach my children Chinese. (Are you saying that Overseas Chinese aren't 爱国 patriotic? Of course Chinese believe their own kind to be superior, etc.) **three**, there are ethnic Chinese minorities that form segregated communities in countries such as Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, etc - of course these people will be able to speak Chinese (usually Cantonese or Min Nan dialects though). Also, what do you mean by "where you mug up Chinese language"? I don't understand what you're asking.
Overseas Chinese can be categorised into a number of groups:
  • Genuine legal migrants from mainland China (中国大陆来的移民), looking to settle abroad in western countries, find a job, and have a better lifestyle
    • Their children and grandchildren, known as second and third-generation overseas Chinese (中国移民的儿孙;二代/三代-海外华侨)
      • Of these second and third-generations, there are two categories: those that are assimilated into Western culture and society (被西方文化同化的华侨), and those that aren't. In Australia, most Chinese aren't assimilated, but those that are assimilated act and speak as if they were normal white Australians. Assimilated Chinese cannot speak Chinese, and they pretend to be white people. They know little or nothing about Chinese culture, and they eat Australian food like BBQ sausages all bloody day.
  • Cantonese-speaking migrants from Hong Kong (香港移民和二/三代) who migrated very early due to ease of having a British Overseas National citizenship, and have spent quite some time in western countries
  • Illegal immigrants (非法移民)
  • PoliThis template is placed here to prevent triggering China's "wall". - User:Benlisquaretical asylum seekers (我看你的IP 219.151.156.37是重庆的,不和谐的话题,我不敢翻译,怕你那边出麻烦) (in Sydney there are lots of FaThis template is placed here to prevent triggering China's "wall". - User:Benlisquarelun GoThis template is placed here to prevent triggering China's "wall". - User:Benlisquareng SB. you also hear alot about 19This template is placed here to prevent triggering China's "wall". - User:Benlisquare89 SBs in USA) (P.S. • Chinese international students (中国海外学生) (usually 90后脑残SB kids, like 非主流. spoilt kids of rich parents, and are usually stupid cunts)
  • Those overseas Chinese who are not living in a western country, but rather a Chinese community in South East Asia (东南亚海外华侨). There are 7 million in Malaysia, 6 million in Thailand, etc.
Now tell me, how many of these do you think "cannot speak Chinese"? I don't get how you come to such a conclusion. -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email 14:43, 8 September 2010 (UTC)

South China Sea

Hi, Benlisquare. I am not sure who wrote "Note: Namebox is for languages that name the sea as a translation of "South China Sea" only. For alternate names, such as "East Sea", other translations are provided in the main article body. Do not include them here." Is this a discussed consensus? Actually Vietnamese calls the sea "Biển Đông". Are you going to prohibit the actual name used in Vietnam? As I am not familiar with this article, please indicate the past discussion. Thank you. ―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 11:30, 9 September 2010 (UTC)

"Biển Đông", along with other names, are already present in the main article body. What the infobox does is list all cases of direct translations of the phrase "South China Sea"; since Biển Đông is not a direct translation of South China Sea, it doesn't belong in that infobox (Biển Đông translates to "East Sea"). The article body contains other names for the sea in question, that do not translate to "South China Sea". What might be a workaround would be to create a separate infobox for translations of "East Sea", if people find that suitable. -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email 11:34, 9 September 2010 (UTC)
I don't understand your explanation. Is your explanation based on any Policy or Guideline?. It seems a censorship by persons reject other name than "South China Sea". ―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 11:44, 9 September 2010 (UTC)
It hasn't been discluded, it however doesn't belong in the namebox as it is not a translation of the name. The namebox is not a list of names, the namebox is a list of translations. "Biển Đông" is East Sea, and not South China Sea, like the rest of the entries in the namebox. For example, a certain object may have a number of renderings in different languages; say something was called a "computational device" in Russian, Slovenian and Polish, but a "machine for transcribing" in Greek, Serbian and Turkish, even though they both refer to the same thing, the name in Greek is not synonomous with the name in Russian (this is just an example). East Sea would be an alternate name to South China Sea, but it does not mean South China Sea. It's been like that since the article began; if you wish to change the status quo, then feel free to start a second infobox, or state your intentions on the talk page. Removing incorrect translations has nothing to do with policies or guidelines, so I have no idea what you're talking about. And how is it "censorship" if it's already there in the article? Biển Đông is mentioned within the article. -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email 11:55, 9 September 2010 (UTC)
I don't think the name other than "South China Sea" should not be the infobox. Yes I will bring this to Talk page and ask more editors opinions. ―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 12:06, 9 September 2010 (UTC)

Tolstoy

In part, this is a follow-up to the problem you helped resolve with a recent edit at Senkaku Islands.

I wonder if you have previously stumbled across this quote?

The most difficult subjects can be explained to the most slow-witted man if he has not formed any idea of them already; but the simplest thing cannot be made clear to the most intelligent man if he is firmly persuaded that he knows already, without a shadow of doubt, what is laid before him. -- Leo Tolstoy, 1994

These sentences were introduced to me by someone interested in Metonymy and WP:Polling is not a substitute for discussion WP:Straw poll. Although I still haven't resolved what I think about the context, I do come back again and again to Tolstoy's words.

Contributions to "List of historical drama films of Asia" article

First of all, I want to thank you for contributing to this new article. I just want to let you know (because I didn't really address this in the introduction, and probably should go back and add this), but I have all of the films in each section ordered chronologically by subject. I went back and re-ordered your entries to keep with that scheme, but I hope you'll keep that in mind for future contributions. Thanks again!

WikiProject East Asia Scope & Ratings

Hello. This message is to inform you that I have called for a reexamination of the scope document and the ratings system used by the project. The ratings system especially has run into problems and could benefit from a simplification and generalizations. The scope, too, could be reexamined to the same end. Please come to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject East Asia and discuss the matters so that we can reach a community consensus. I'd like to have it done before Christmas, so I can spend the break making any necessary changes. The importance discussion is at the top of the page. The scope discussion is at the bottom, but we can move them together if we need to.

Thank you, Sven Manguard Wha? 07:12, 10 December 2010 (UTC)

Chinese question

Hi! I saw this edit and wonder if the meaning of 一日千秋 is correct. The meaning is "one day seems to be a thousand year/very long" in Japan. The chengyu is used in a phrase like "wait for xx, feeling 一日千秋" and the meaning is "wait for xx impatiently". If the meaning in Chinese is correct, it's OK. But if the meaning is not correct, would you please correct it? Thank you. Oda Mari (talk) 08:30, 17 December 2010 (UTC)

As far as I know, 一日千秋 is a Japanese idiom, and is rarely used in Chinese other than in its Japanese sense. Chinese language google hits for 一日千秋 state that it is a Japanese phrase, not a Chinese phrase. On the other hand, wikt:一日三秋 is a Chinese phrase, and is supposed to reflect how long time seems to take when you haven't seen someone close to you for a very long time (hence "a single day seems to take three autumns, i.e. three years"). The Classical Chinese phrase 一日三秋 is rendered in Vernacular Chinese as wikt:一日不見,如隔三秋. -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email 10:56, 17 December 2010 (UTC)

Hanzi question

Hello Benlisquare i have a question a little offtopic not related to the encyclopedia, im currently starting to learn mandarin, but only spoken as i havent been able to find on the internets how do they teach the writing system in China, the japanese have their kanji education system in the Kyōiku kanji but i havent been able to found anything as informative on chinese schools character education as i was on japanese like what characters they teach in each grade, only the articles on lists of frequently used charactersXiàndài Hànyǔ Chángyòng Zìbiǎo. Do you know some resources where i can?.--Andres rojas22 (talk) 19:35, 31 December 2010 (UTC)

I've never grown up in China, so I wouldn't know the exact details, but this might help: wikt:Category:Chinese by difficulty level (wikt:Appendix:HSK list of Mandarin words). As far as I know, China doesn't officially divide characters up into school grades (schools might set their own curriculum, although someone can correct me if I am wrong), but Chinese phrases (i.e. compund words made up of 2 or more characters) can be divided into grades in accordance to the Chinese Proficiency Test. Hope this may help. -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email 00:39, 1 January 2011 (UTC)

Chengdu J-20

While on the same topic, please note that:

  1. Interceptor aircraft = 拦截机 (term used by the Chinese speaking world-at-large, ahem!) / 截击机 (term used mainly by mainland China)
  2. Fighter aircraft = 战斗机 (term used by the Chinese speaking world-at-large) /歼击机 (term used mainly by mainland China)

Another good example is:

  1. Aircraft = 航空器
  2. Airplane = 飞机

I don't think you understand what I mean. You cannot upload an image to Commons without a license tag. Under what license shall film posters be uploaded with? They are certainly not public domain, nor CC/GNU. There are no "fair use" tags on Commons like on EN Wikipedia. It was a process I did by using the Replace feature in Notepad. Now that I realise it, this would have made a succession ([][][]) of tags on one line for entries that had more than one ref; this was not my original intention. I originally intended that for each entry that I removed a bad ref from, I would replace it with { {cn}}, hence why the replace script I use was "<refname=abcde />"-->"{{cn}}". Using replace, I replaced every ref instance with a { {cn}}, however I have forgotten that some entries might have used more than one reference. The messy formatting was my bad. I never aimed on making a WP:POINT in the first place - having been on WP for six years, don't you think it would be a stupid way of getting blocked if I did that? -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email 16:21, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
  • Then, I'd suggest that you better leave the project and take a breather for the moment... as you are in danger of being blocked if you carry on with this collision course heading. I'm being very impartial towards to you when I say this, so please take heed. As I've mentioned earlier on, let the admins take care of the matter now. Best. --Dave ♠♣♥♦™№1185©♪♫® 16:31, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
The original edit war issue was that two editors had the impression that they could have whatever they wanted with the article, until the AfD had closed. However, it appeared to me that if I had allowed that to occur, the smoke and mirrors of the article being well-sourced (because nobody seems to read talkpages these days) when questionable sources were being used would have possibly meant a premature keep.
However, I will take your advice and back off from the article for the time being; hopefully I will be able to WP:COOL down, so that once discussion begins again, I am able to engage in a decent discussion. -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email 16:36, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
