For others reading this, I let Namiba know there was an RFC at Talk:Football recently on the use of specific codes in articles versus WP:ENGVAR standardization. However, I can't agree with their assessment given the fact that the New England Patriots play American football, or just plain football as it is known in New England, and therefore it's implied that he's a tight end in the sport given the fact he plays for that team. That bridge can always be crossed if it is crossed, but the principle would be the same. The reader would understand he's a tight end playing Canadian football if it said he was a tight end for say, the Toronto Argonauts. It's implied from the link. Under 'Early years' it says that his brother Dan is currently a teammate of Robs. This is the quote from the article:

Middle Name

I updated Gronkowski's middle name on the page. It was incorrectly displayed as "Paxton," although Gronkowski himself mentioned that the name on Wikipedia was inaccurate and that his full name is Robert James Gronkowski Lubnasebastian (talk) 06:58, 9 January 2017 (UTC)

The only other source I can find for his middle name is Pro Football Reference, which has his middle name as Paxton. Weighing PFR against a YouTube video, PFR is the more reliable source. I decided to look up the publisher of the video. It says "TSN Tube". The YouTube page links to The Sports Network (http://www.tsn.ca) . I'm trying to confirm whether this actually belongs to "The Sports Network" or not. There are publications widely thought of as "reliable sources" who host their videos on YouTube, and so it's important to distinguish those videos from, say, self-published videos made by an average Joe. @Lizard the Wizard: @Lubnasebastian: @John from Idegon:

Lubnasebastian, in the future I would identify the publisher/author of the video and include it in the citation. If it's from CNN's YouTube channel, then CNN, not YouTube, is the real author/publisher of the video!

While Wikipedia articles should be primarily based on secondary sources and should not be entirely about what people have to say about themselves, editors should pay attention to what people say about themselves: it's good background info and it can be used to cross-check info in secondary sources. In fact there are guidelines on when it is acceptable to use self-published statements about oneself (as in if Gronkowski wrote on his personal website that his middle name is not X): Wikipedia:Verifiability#Self-published_or_questionable_sources_as_sources_on_themselves

In regards to "TSN Tube" I found this article on Conor McGregor and Dana White from TSN's official website. It embeds a YouTube video which states that the author is TSN Tube. So therefore "TSN Tube" is The Sports Network's official YouTube channel, and the YouTube video Lubnasebastian linked to was actually a work of The Sports Network.

It's a segment of a program called "Cabbie Presents" by Cabbie Richards.

Well then in this case, I'd lean more toward the TSN source and go with "James." It obviously complies with WP:BLPSPS since it was Gronk himself that said it, and it's not unduly self-serving. I'd still like to see a secondary source that confirms this, though. And PFR has been known to make mistakes, so we could contact them and ask where they got "Paxton" from. I'd take that source with the grainiest of salts, because 1.) No publish date, 2.) It was written by a college sophomore, and most of all, 3.) It's fantasy football related. If we haven't been able to track down a middle name after all this time, do you think a college student writing about fantasy football in a blog is gonna put in the research to figure it out? No, he's gonna go to Wikipedia. While there's no date of publication, it seems the article was written around the 2015 preseason. And this is what Wikipedia said Gronk's middle name was at the time. After seeing Gronkowski state, himself, that his middle name is not Paxton, I was surprised this hasn't yet been changed. Then I saw, at the top of this thread, that the interview in which he himself says his middle name is not Paxton, was viewable this whole time. Why is it that the person themselves saying, on national Canadian television, "Wikipedia has it wrong", not all that is needed? This article needs semi-protection

A few hours ago, I posted a request for semi-protection on the appropriate page, “Wikipedia:Requests for page protection”. The reasoning being that there are pending changes on this page stacking up by dozens at a time before being reviewed by the authorized users (that’s not what pending changes protection is for, it’s for infrequently-edited articles where a high percentage of edits are disruptive), and the high rate of vandalism and disruptive edits. Oddly enough, there were admins who responded to and protected other pages well after I made my post, but never responded to my post or change the protection of this page. Adam Schefter tweeted that Gronk has passed his physical and the trade is now official. I still believe it would be better to wait for an official announcement from the Buccaneers and/or Patriots to confirm. Additionally, when the trade does process, Gronkowski will still need to request reinstatement from the reserve/retired list in order to considered a member of the Buccaneers' active roster (for reference). As I included in the article (and indicated above as likely to happen), the official transactions wire for April 22 says Gronk remains on the reserve/retired list after the trade to the Buccaneers. The account you said was "unverified" is one of the most reliable sources on Twitter for transactions despite not having a blue checkmark. They took a screenshot of the official wire. Find me a source saying Gronk was reinstated from the reserve/retired list, which is absolutely necessary in order to be on the active roster per NFL regulations. Sports Illustrated said "The Patriots will have to send his rights to the Buccaneers who will need to reinstate him." @Maxen Embry: My sources are writers and people who have access to the official NFL transactions wire. It's not original research, they said exactly what I've added. Additionally, I know that players on reserve/retired cannot be added to active rosters without first being reinstated from that list, so intuition tells me that there will also be a transaction coming for his reinstatement. NFL team website rosters are consistently inaccurate, and I know this from being a WikiProject NFL contributor for 10 years and 60,000 edits with a primary focus on this topic. You have one source saying he's on the active roster, I have two tweets from accounts that I trust as reliable given their exceptional track records when it comes to reporting on the NFL transactions wire, and multiple news articles stating he needs to be reinstated to the active roster after the trade. If anything, your source is not independent of the subject (WP:PRIMARY) since it's coming from his employer. What will end up happening here is in the next few days he will be reinstated to the roster, news articles will cover his reinstatement from the reserve/retired list, and then this discussion will be moot. "AllCardinals" is the new Cardinals subsection of Sports Illustrated, here is one of his articles for the publisher. For the record, Balzer has been one of the 48 Pro Football Hall of Fame selectors for at least 15 years ([1], [2]) so your belittling his credentials is unwarranted. This is the link to the official NFL transactions wire from yesterday. It is only accessible to credentialed media personnel, and multiple people who have access have reported the transaction. NFLTradeRumors took a screenshot from that link, and Howard Balzer reports transactions on his Twitter account there frequently. Some instances of team website rosters being inaccurate: the Steelers placed Ryan Shazier on the reserve/retired list on March 17, 2020, and he appears on their website roster under "Reserve/Retired" because the team is pushing the idea that Shazier will forever be on their roster (IMO a PR stunt since he suffered a career-ending injury years ago). One day earlier, Ramon Foster was also placed on the team's reserve/retired list (ref) but he's not on the team website roster. My Philadelphia Eagles include Corey Clement on their list of Unrestricted Free Agents despite the official transactions wire stating he was not tendered as a restricted free agent and therefore his contract expired on March 18 (source). He is not an unrestricted free agent, and if he signed with another team would not count towards compensatory picks. Last season, the Redskins website announced Jehu Chesson was placed on the injured reserve list, despite being a practice squad member. The NFL transactions wire stated he was placed on the "practice squad/injured list" (completely separate) but the Redskins website roster listed him under Injured Reserve (discussion for context). These are just examples off the top of my head and with very minimal research, but I believe NFL team website rosters fall under questionable sources. Dude signs a contract with WWE and there's only two sentences of him being a "special guest" on the show. This should be fixed. @Randy Kryn: I originally wasn't going to say anything but I feel like I have to now. You keep claiming it's "common place" but yet in my 11 years of using Wikipedia I do not recall a single instance of a significant other's picture being included. Second, if it is true and I've just missed it or don't remember it, it's a pretty well established rule here that just because something exists on other pages doesn't mean it's right. Pick any random 100 articles and I bet every single one has at least one policy violation, minor or major, on it. And just because it's been on the article for a while, again, doesn't make it right. Finally, I don't see what the inclusion of her picture of her by herself adds to the page, especially since she has her own article with two pictures of her on it. Hi Rockchalk717. I guess I don't see anything wrong with it, she's a big part of his life and him being in or not being in the picture doesn't seem important. Yeah, pictures of significant others (wives, husbands, long-term partners) are everywhere in artist and historical figures pages, probably in actors and many other types of pages as well. Before coming here I looked at Tom Brady's page and am surprised his wife's image is not included given her notability. Spokespersons category

Hey man im josh, re WP:NOTDEFINING, people define Gronkowski as a football player, not a spokesperson, as its his football career that makes him notable. I don't imagine any sources refer to him as a spokesman, even though he is one. – Muboshgu (talk) 01:44, 6 July 2022 (UTC)

Hey @Muboshgu, I think people can be more than one thing. To those who don't watch football they may just see Gronkowski as a spokesperson whereas you and I primarily see him as a football player. It's tough to make an article where a person is notable for one thing mention what they're a spokesperson for without coming off as advertising. I did some googling and found a couple sources that do refer to him as one, 1, 2, and I'm confident with further searching I'd be able to find a good deal more as he is also the spokesperson for a CBD company. I'm not extremely passionate about keeping the category, so if you do feel strongly, go ahead and remove it, but I do believe that the category applies to him for many people. SAT score

Per IP's dummy edit summary: Gronkowski graduated from Woodland Hills in 2007 with a 3.75 GPA and 1560 out of 1600 SAT score. "1560 out of 2400" is wrong. It is 1600. I don't know much about SAT scores (being a Brit myself) but they appear to be out of 1600 or 2400 (depending on which high school?) which is not at all confusing (that's irony). I agree Gronkowski's SAT was 1560 on the 1600 scale - see this page - under "SAT and ACT Test Scores" hover over the tool tip ? and it says "Average SAT composite score out of 1600..." but in the source already included in the article (https://pbs.twimg.com/media/ENE8oKDXUAA1LES.jpg), the guy pictured next to Gronkowski (Cameron Holland) had a 1640 SAT score, so is that one out of 2400?
