Ajami, Jaffa article

Hi all,

Can you please take a look at the Ajami, Jaffa article and offer some additional input on how it can be further developed? Also, I would like it to be part of WikiProject Palestine as it is relevant to Palestinian History, the Nakba and the Palestinian citizens of Israel.

why is StandWithUs part of WikiProject Palestine?

As someone who reads about the Middle East, I dont understand why StandWithUs would be listed under WikiProject Palestine.

Incidentally, you are wrong; at least one of the editors blocked in the CAMERA-affair was a member of WP:Palestine. Huldra (talk) 18:52, 10 August 2009 (UTC) 

I don't think it would fit the project's scope since it's based in LA and it's not advocating or dealing with Palestine-related issues. Hard to believe, I know, but ...

... a search through Wikimedia Commons for images to use in Gaza war yields only pictures of Israeli civilians who suffered. Going out on a limb here <sigh>, but I am pretty sure there were also Palestinian casualties during this operation. Does anyone know of a public-domain or otherwise uploadable source for them? Ma'ale Adumim and Modi'in Illit pages

These are two of the largest Israeli settlements on the West Bank. I've added mentions to the pages that the settlements are considered to be illegal under international law, however these edits are persistently being removed by Israeli users and discussing the issue in the talk pages isn't proving very fruitful. Do you have any ideas, how to move forward with the issue?

There is also another problem with both of these pages, namely they have sidebars where they're presented as normal Israeli cities thus giving the impression that they'd be inside Israel, which is factually wrong. --Dailycare (talk) 11:10, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

Depopulated villages

In light of recent events which have seen us now have an article on every depopulated Arab settlement in the 1948 war and which have led to one of this project's most active editors User:Huldra leaving wikipedia because they can no longer navigate with the huge full template as it is stresses her out, and along with MOS guidelines I am splitting this massive oversized template by district e.g like Template:District of Gaza. There should not be any concerns here, given that all the settlements are linked by each district on the list page linked in the title, plus the category lists all the settlement. Individual templates now like Template:District of Safad are even fair sized templates on their own link EVERY one in the same templates is horrendous now. Is much more manageable and tidier to now organize this way given that the situation has changed now we have articles on all of them. I must admit I also find the template stressful to look at so organization is needed. Note I have also done work in the past on cinema and other templates for Palestine the past and am trusted in sorting things out. Dr. Blofeld ^{White cat} 17:10, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Mohammed Salah needs article

Got these details while research for Washington Report on Middle East Affairs article so thought I'd pass it on in case anyone is out there with nothing to do :-) A few details and refs:

• In 1998 he was the first American citizen to be placed on the U.S. government list of terrorists. While visiting Palestine and distributing tithed money to the needy, he was arrested by Israel, charged with being a member of Hamas; he spent 5 years in an Israeli prison. On returning home, the United States seized his home and assets worth 1.4 million.REF: Raeed N. Tayeh , U.S. Government Moves to Seize Chicago Home of Mohammad Salah After His Conviction in Israel, “Washington Report on Middle East Affairs,” July/August 1998, Page 118.
• Salah alleged was tortured with beatings by interrogators, including an American-born Israeli. His lawyer asserted the evidence was based on “fabricated and uncorroborated allegations” from Israelis and wanted to bring the Israeli interrogators into court. REF: Richard H. Curtis, In Case You Thought It Can’t Happen Here: Mohammad Salah, an American Citizen, Is Facing Trial on Charges Neither He Nor His Lawyer Can See, "The Washington Report on Middle East Affairs' web site, December 1999, pages 35, 98-99.
• The Israeli interrogators were brought into a closed court which defense and civil liberty groups called secret evidence. REF: Mideast youth- Ray Hananiah, A tale of three show-trials (Plus another source I lost.)
• This led to a congressional attempt to ban secret evidence Richard Curtiss, House Bill to Repeal Use of Secret Evidence Gets 19 Sponsors as National Awareness of Abuses Grows, Washington Report on Middle East Affairs, September 1999, pages 16, 120, 136 .

Al-Manshiyya

Tiamut made a nice disambig page about al-Manshiyya. It was apparently a very popular name. One entry noticeably missing was the Manshiyya neighborhood of Jaffa that was completely obliterated. I would like to see that article, or at least have a nice paragraph about it in the Jaffa article. (it would also be nice to have an article about another Jaffa neighborhood, Al-Ajami, which is still standing). I was wondering if the Khalidi book has much info on those neighborhoods.

Outside of Palestine, there's also a neighborhood (and a famous plaza with that name) in Alexandria. The plaza has a giant statue of Mohammad Ali Pasha, and was the venue of a speech by Nasser on October 26, 1954 where an attempt at his life was made. Also in Egypt, there are two neighborhoods called New and Old Manshiyya in El-Mahalla El-Kubra. Also according to ar:, there are towns(?) in Tunisia, Libya, Jordan, and in Medina, Saudi Arabia with that name. --Fjmustak (talk) 01:54, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

I think the study actually says that of the 143 Palestinian Arabs tested, 79 individuals were Type J Haplogroup. That's 55.2 percent, comprised of 16.8 percent from M172 subgroups and 38.4 from M267 subgroups. That doesn't mean a lot, because the cohorts were small and a footnote says that all chromosomes that weren't J-M172 were simply assumed to be members of J-M267, the J1 subgroup, by default. The Bedouin cohort only consisted of 32 individuals, 21 were type J haplogroups. 65.6 percent with 3.1 from M172 subgroups and 62.5 from M267 subgroups. harlan (talk) 02:12, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

West Bank population figures

I have gone back to the version before either of these edits as that seems to tally best with what the articles on the places themselves say. Page move losign history.

I notice that the last move of 2009 Capital of Arab Culture to 2009 Arab Capital of Culture has resulted in the page history being split. Anyone here know how to fix that? Important discussions (Palestine vs. Palestinian territories, etc)

Please note that there are two three discussions that have been initiated of relevance to this project. One is a merge proposal suggesting that State of Palestine be merged into Proposals for a Palestinian state. Another is a move request suggesting that List of twin towns and sister cities in Palestine be moved to List of twin towns and sister cities in the Palestinian Territories. The third is a request to merge Occupied Palestinian Territory into Palestinian territories. Feel free to add your thoughts regarding both all three proposals on their talk pages. You could have commented to my post above instead of opening a new discussion. To the point - there is no defined territory under the name Palestine. May be there will be in the future, but it is currently not the case, and we cannot foresee the future. The is a more-or-less defined territory by the name "Palestinian Territories", so this name is preferable if you want to list cities within a specific territory. As for the merge proposal - I proposed it. In fact the two articles were merged by consensus decision, until certain editor decided to re-initiate the article "State of Palestine". This article is currently very poorly written. It is written more like an academic thesis than like an encyclopedic article. It brings sideline sources and gives them undue weight. In some cases it brings good reliable sources, but distort them in an awkward way. In many cases this article simply repeats information already given in the "Proposals" article or in the articles "Palestinian Territories" and "Palestinian National Authority", and in some cases it contradicts these articles, in a way that makes en-wp looks ridicules. I don't see the benefit from the re-initiation of the "State" article, and suggest it would be re-merged with the "Proposals" article, which is much better written and sourced. In normal circumstances, the appropriate place to discuss these issues is on the affected articles' Talk pages. In this situation, however, it seems that a central question being debated is whether a State of Palestine exists, whether the names of Wikipedia articles rightly or wrongly suggest that such a state exists, etc. Perhaps a centralized discussion might be appropriate (although this page isn't the proper venue for such a discussion). Sorry Avi, but at Israeli settler violence, I see more of a POV problem in User:Shuki's edits [2] [3], than I do in those of User:Factsontheground [4], [5], [6]. If you have issues with other users, by all means, bring them up. Also, Wikiproject talk pages are the best places to obtain the attention of editors who are involved in a given issue. An RfC is way too premature; that should only be used in cases where there is distinct evidence of continued violations of wikipedia behavioral issues. In this case, I thought I noticed a pattern which may or may not have needed more investigation, and so I informed the people whom I know to be better versed than I in these issues (WP:I, WP:P, and WP:IPC) and asked them for their input. If anything, making accusations to the user or on more-widely-read and less focused pages would create unnecessary drama and be less likely to achieve a decent resolution. My intention was to raise an issue with the appropriate people and a minimum of unnecessary and irrelevant drama. Well Avi, to be honest, there are at least half a dozen editors here I can think of off the top of my head whose edits are, to me, incredibly POV. However, I don't make sections on project pages outlining my suspicions because of WP:AGF. When I do have specific diffs and edits that can provide sufficient proof of their being an issue (and when I have a lot of free time on my hands) I take those to the appropriate noticeboards. I don't think that raising my generalized suspicions on project pages is helpful, because if the editor is truly impervious to changing their POV, my notice will accomplish nothing except to antagonize them, and if they're not, well, then I've antagonized them for no good reason. :) Tiamut^talk 21:36, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

One more thing, if I did think that someone was open to being reasoned with, I would post a message on their talk page, pointing to specific diffs I found problematic and ask them nicely to reflect upoon whether or not these edits are in line with WP:NPOV. I'd make sure to note that these things are inherently subjective, so that there is always the possibility that I may be wrong in my interpretation, and if that was the case, then I was sorry in advance for any offense I may have caused. Needed: Lists of attacks by Israel to match those listing attacks on Israel

There is a marked bias in the number of references to attacks on Israel ('pro-Israel), whereas attacks by Israel are not listed ('pro-Palestine').

I have tried remedying this in the past, but have regularly been frustrated - I suspect by pro-Israeli Wikipedians. e.g. one stub I started was subsumed in the 'Gaza War timeline', while the pro-Israeli one was left untouched.

Jerusalem

Hi, I note that the Jerusalem page contains flags and coats-of-arms that Israel has assigned to the city. First off, you seem to be losing track of the fact that the Israeli coat of arms of Jerusalem was adopted before 1967, and originally referred to west Jerusalem. Ambiguity of “village lands”

Example: Najd, Gaza. The article quotes Walid Khalidi as saying that Israeli localities were “founded on village lands”. I am concerned about the insinuation here. The actual land the village was situated on remains unpopulated. An Israeli town has been built hundreds of feet away on what was open farm land. The Israeli town was not built on top of an Arab village. Yet the phrase “built on village lands” gives the impression the village itself was built over. Furthermore, how is it possible to know that those empty "lands" legally belonged to the Arabs living in the village, and that they were indeed “village lands”? Is Khalidi himself making this assertion? How long did these “lands” stretch out for – till those of the next village? Is it based on a estimated radius? Where are the deeds showing that these parcels of land indeed belonged to people in the village? And if such deeds do exist, a clearer usage of describing that unpopulated land is needed, maybe “adjacent lands”. As this is mentioned in the majority of similar articles, I wonder if any Israeli towns were actually built on "state lands", i.e. lands owned by the state and not by individual villages? I don't know how "built on village lands" can be taken to mean "built on the site of the village". It means exactly what it says. In the case of Najd, the words are even clearer: "on village land, to the south of the village". Each village possessed land for farming in addition to land for building houses. There was a British court which determined land ownership and produced cadastral maps that still exist. It ran out of time to cover all of Palestine, but it did manage all of the coastal strip as well as eastern Galilee. A map in Dov Gavish and Ruth Kark, "The Cadastral Mapping of Palestine, 1858-1928", The Geographical Journal, Vol. 159, No. 1. (Mar., 1993), pp. 70-80, shows that Najd was well within the region covered. The site on which Sderot was established in 1951 was about 2km south of the village site of Najd. Khalidi says the site was on the village lands, and since Khalidi is a reliable source and we don't have a contrary source, that is what the article should say. Khalidi says that the boundaries of each village's land were taken from a British map of 1946. Regarding state land, there was plenty of land judged by the court to be state land but it focussed its limited resources on places where private ownership was claimed (including all the locations where Jewish ownership was claimed). The relevant articles do not cover this very well, and an article covering an important event, 1972 Israeli aerial raid on Lebanon, is completely bogus, and actually about a completely different event than the title indicates. I renamed the article to remove the word "aerial" from the title, since it seems there was a significant non-aerial component involved. You don't understand the problem. See the talk page of that article. The title refers to one event that happened in 72, the article is about a completely different one that happened in 73. The WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons (UBLPs) aims to reduce the number of unreferenced biographical articles to under 30,000 by June 1, primarily by enabling WikiProjects to easily identify UBLP articles in their project's scope. List of U.S. citizen casualties of Israeli military actions

Someone should create it. I see there already are List of Palestinian civilian casualties in the Second Intifada and List of Israeli civilian casualties in the Second Intifada. Casualties would include deaths or severe injury. This list could include USS Liberty casualties, Palestinian-American casualties, Lebanese-American casualties, Rachel Corrie and casualties of Gaza flotilla raid. This seems an overly specific list. The article 'List of Palestinian civilian casualties in the Second Intifada' could include non Israeli military actions, so it is NPOV, I guess. The article being suggested, is too specific. Keep it general, and it would be legitimate as well, i.e. List of foreigner civilian casualties in the Second Intifada, so that civilians killed by both sides can be included. This is called NPOV. Example of use of Israeli terminology: Wikipedia entry "Gaza Strip Smuggling Tunnels"

Hi folks, I've raised a proposal on the "Gaza Strip Smuggling Tunnels" talk page that the article be renamed "Gaza Strip Tunnels" and that the word "smuggling" be changed to something more value neutral like "transporting" in the article. I think this is an obvious example of the kind of Israeli terminology that has seeped into the way things are discussed. This is what I wrote on the "Gaza Strip Smuggling Tunnels" talk page:

Hi guys, can we change the title of the article to "Gaza Strip tunnels" ?

Using the word "smuggling" (and, throughout the article, "smuggle" and other variants) seems to be POV. The implication is that the transporting is illegal. However, this is but one viewpoint. There is nothing clear or self-evident that this is so. Many maintain, and with the aid of ample documentation (citing, e.g., Geneva Conventions, Additional Protocol I) that the Israeli blockade is illegal. If the Israeli blockade is indeed illegal, then transporting materials cannot be illegal.

I would say the same thing if the Wiki entry on the Gaza blockade was titled "illegal blockade," or something of that sort.

Further, unlike in the case of the Israeli blockade, there is no known source in international law which indicates or even suggests that the transport of materials across a blockade to be illegal. There are a number of articles that when they either first say Nablus or each time they say Nablus the phrase "biblical Shechem" is added. This is done in article that have no reference to Shechem or even try to make a connection the a biblical past. Jerusalem

There is currently a discussion taking place at Talk:Jerusalem over how the article should word certain issues. Some editors want the word "proclaimed" to be added to the first sentence of the article to describe it as the "proclaimed capital" of Israel as the international community does not recognise it as the capital of Israel, others disagree and think the status quo which has existed for about 3 years should remain (something that has been debated many times over the years but retained), and several compromises have also been suggested. The issue has now also spread to other matters, with some editors wanting it to say "proclaimed flag", "proclaimed mayor" , "proclaimed coat of arms" etc, to also highlight the fact the international community does not recognise the status of Jerusalem. This matter could have implications for other articles if changes are made and a similar pattern followed. So input from other editors would be helpful. Um... Just a clarification... WP:NORN is not an "admin" noticeboard. It is a community noticeboard. Most of those responding there are not admins (and the opinions of those who happen to be admins have no more weight than opinions of non-admins). Arabic hip hop

Hi, I was wondering if anyone in charge of the ratings could take a look at the Arabic hip hop page. It is listed as part of Project Palestine and I've made some significant contributions lately - I'm hoping it can be moved up from "Start" class. I've tried my best to turn it from a listing and forum for promotional materials to more of a historical entry that deals with development of the genre. Did you know?

Not sure what to make of this: I was exploring Project Israel's new article listing, particularly articles related to 1948. Between January and April last year Ynhockey created sixteen new articles. According to my count all of them got references on the main page "did you know" section. Is there something I don't know? Is there a procedure for submitting suggestions? Mine would be Thomas C. Trying to bend the rules

I have had a picture in Kav 300 affair removed. It was taken from the (now electronic) Israeli magazine "Challenge" after I had written to the editor, Roni Ben Efrat, to see how to get permission from the photographer, Alex Levac. She e-mailed back saying it wasn't a problem. Of course this hasn't satisfied the "Commons" copyright people. The picture has been removed. Somewhere I have a memory of it being possible to break the copyright codes in special cases. Has anyone suggestions as to how to proceed? In this case the picture is fundamental to the article. Meantime I have patched a link to a Hebrew site that has it. I have no Hebrew so am unable to pursue that avenue towards permission from Levac himself. Region designation for locations in West Bank

There was a tag on Kfar Etzion massacre saying it needed co-ordinates. I pasted those given for Kfar Etzion. Noticing that it had region:IL I changed it to region:Palestine. It was corrected back to IL. I questioned this and it is now region:PS (as it should be). I have been looking around other pages relating to places in the West Bank. With every location that I have checked when you click on the co-ordinates at the top of the page you get to a page which gives region: as undefined (e.g. Ramallah etc]]. I have tried to change this on Bil'in but this has resulted in the actual numbers shown becoming over-printed. Any suggestions? Padres Hana (talk) 14:56, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

Sorted! But I have come across another problem: Gilo should be region:PS - my edit was slapped down. Moving on I have been looking at other West Bank locations: a large number of settlements use an Israeli village template which, tempting as it would be, I must not make a blanket change to. Invitation template

I just posted an invitation to join this project on a new user's talk page, and I discovered that the template had been changed without any notification here. Instead of adding the template on this project page, it adds a template which includes an outline map of the West Bank and Gaza. Apart from any political/ideological implications of this (which may not be accepted my many project members), this implies that only areas occupied in 1967 are of interest or relevance to this project. Do other project members agree with me that the template should be reverted to that omn our own project page, which does not make any geographical statements at all? AfDs for Palestinian cause and List of Palestinian solidarity organizations

While these articles may not be perfect or quite the needed article, there obviously needs to be some stand alone article describing the variety of activist and solidarity groups (besides Palestinian political violence !} Others argue that mentions in Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Palestinian people are more than enough. However, obviously Wikipedia needs article(s) about the range of Palestinian groups or solidarity groups around the world. Someone commented there is not even a currently existing category on this topic. (I can't remember what I found when researched last week, but not much.) Request for help finding Nuran EMT

Hi, The article Hatzalah has a mention in the "interaction with other agencies" section about an East J-lem EMT group called Nuran. Currently the only WP article for Nuran is about a village in Azerbaijan. As far as I can tell, there is no page about the organization in English, Hebrew, or Arabic. I'm happy to create one but I have been unable to find even a mention of this group. I assume that most sources are in Arabic which I do not read. Can editors here help out to find sources or mentions for this group. If we can't find even a mention of it we should probably remove the line from the Hatzalah article as well, as the group may not exist and just be a long-standing error. How to describe what happened to the Mandate for Palestine after the 1948 war

Talknic and I have reached an impasse on the League of Nations mandate page. All or most of the mandates include a characterization of the mandate after the mandate ended. Talknic feels that the current language doing this for the Mandate for Palestine is misleading. We have had difficulty working with each other in the past. This article is currently at Next Palestinian general election, it's talk page is at talk:Palestinian general election, 2011/2012 (the complementary redirects do exist). Reading the article I think both article and talk should be at Palestinian general election, 2012 but don't want to tread on any toes (I know articles in this area are sometimes sensitive). The article and talk both appear fairly inactive, so I've posted here rather than make a requested move, but I leave it in your capable hands.

It had been under the title History of Pottery in the Southern Levant for around 5 years, and it had been my understanding that this was in order to keep the article NPOV. I am currently in a dispute with the editor who moved the page on the article talk page and was wondering if anyone would be able to assist regarding the proper naming of the article. What is a Palestinian refugee?

Have you ever been involved in an editing dispute in which you were accused of being POV, and not even understood what the other party is complaining about?

I am currently having that problem with talknic in Palestinian refugee. His Palestinian refugee article begins thusly:

The definition for Palestinian refugees or Palestine refugees accepted by the drafters of UNGA Res 194, as confirmed by the UNCCP[3], included Arabs whose normal places of residence was in Israel and Jews who had their homes in Arab Palestine, such as the those from the Jewish quarter of the Old City.

I think that this is utterly obtuse. It is much more likely to confuse than enlighten a first time reader. Can somebody at least explain to me what talknic is so concerned about? I gather that there are multiple definitions, and that some of those definitions would tend to support the contentions of Israelis and/or Palestinians. But I am unable to ascertain exactly what talknic is concerned about.

Solomon's Stables

I wonder if anyone could take a look at the article on Solomon's Stables (Marwani Mosque) on the Temple Mount.

Goranmilo (talk · contribs) substantially re-wrote the section of the history of the site in a series of edits on 25 May 2011 (diff), based on a 2004 conference paper that some might say reflected temple denial rather than serious archaeology.

I've demoted what he added to an "alternative view", and restored the previously sourced material (diff).

But I'd welcome input on the talk page (section: "Alternative view") as to the best way forward. If this is a widespread thesis we probably should report it; but should we really suggest it is credible, if it really isn't? Jheald (talk) 19:42, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

Transjordan/Jordan

Can someone please clarify when exactly Transjordan was renamed Jordan? I have seen sources stating 1946, 1949, 1950 and 1951 (there is also inconsistency within Wikipedia on the issue)? A bit confusing. I believe it was either 1949 or 1950. It officially became the Kingdom of Jordan during the latter year when parliamentarians from the West Bank and Transjordan voted for unification. Merge of Mandate Palestine into British Mandate for Palestine

In 2010, the article "Mandate Palestine" was forked out of "British Mandate for Palestine" article, becoming an identical article since. Due to the almost complete overlap (technically both articles describe a former Mandatory geopolitical entity of Palestine under British rule, which has only one article in other languages) and ongoing confusion (some insisted that "British Mandate for Palestine" is more the name of a 1922 document and not a country), i propose to merge Mandate Palestine into British Mandate for Palestine, and make an additional article named British Mandate for Palestine (document) to prevent confusion between the document and the geopolitical entity. The articles are neither identical or have identical purposes. There seems to be confusion over terminology. I have restored the italicised text, removed recently by Greyshark, which was at the head of the British Mandate for Palestine article which explained the two articles' purposes: This article deals with the Mandate instrument passed by the League of Nations granting Britain a mandate over the area currently occupied by Israel, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and Jordan. For a history of the period, see Mandate Palestine. Undoubtedly, there is some duplication, with material being detailed in both articles which should only be detailed in one. The first question that should be asked is whether it is desirable to split material into separarticles or to have it in a single one. It seems to me that there are legitimately two separate topics, which are prone to confusion because of the same name is commonly used for each. One topic is the "mandate" given to Britain by the league of nations to adminster Palestine. Analogous to a treaty, this encompasses the history of how the mandate came about, what it says, how it was interpreted, and how it came to be terminated. The other topic, obviously related, but different, is the territory defined by the mandate as Palestine -- the political conflicts, demographics economy, government etc. of this territory from September 1923 through May 1948. Rather than merging the articles, should try to prune each back to cover its own topic. --Sjsilverman (talk) 18:36, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
