Blanking of Palestinian costumes due to alledged copyright violation.

Can anyone help reverse the indiscrimnate shut down of Palestinian costumes which as far as I can see is due to a few examples of poor paraphrasing done in good faith? Padres Hana (talk) 22:31, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

The article could be spared if the text that was found to violate copyright is rewritten to conform with policy. This was the website[1] that the article apparently copied parts from in some form. The Duplicate Detector unfortunately has given no examples of copyright violations in the article so the task of rewriting could be a bit tedious, but not too challenging. It's a Good article so I doubt it's going to be hastily deleted. If anybody is interested they could help rewrite parts of the article at Talk:Palestinian costumes/Temp. Is there a reason why we don't have an article on the "Neighbor Procedure"? Was there one which was deleted or is it considered inappropriate topic for inclusion? We have the "Neighbor Procedure" very briefly described in the Breaking the Silence article but I do not see a Wikipedia article for it.

Jerusalem articles in dire need of attention

Hi all, there are various important Jerusalem-related articles out there which are in dire need of attention. Jerusalem during the Crusader period and Jerusalem during the Mamluk period were machine-translated from the extensive articles on Hebrew-wiki and are currently incomprehensible. They were recently blanked and transformed into redirects, but that was undone as a lot of good information, unavailable elsewhere, would have been lost. Any effort going into transforming the two above-mentioned into proper articles would be much appreciated, be it translation, formatting, grammar, citations or images. We once went through the same process with Jerusalem during the Second Temple Period and the result wasn't half bad. Poliocretes (talk) 15:53, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

Bassem al-Tamimi

I've given a start to an article on Bassem al-Tamimi, a Palestinian activist controversially convicted for organizing stone throwers in Nabi Salih. Other eyes would be welcome! I'd be particularly interested if a Hebrew-speaker can turn up an Israeli government or Tamimi critic comment on today's conviction to balance what's there from the English language press, or if anyone can fill in some of the story of Tamimi's (11!) previous arrests. List of Israeli settlements article?

As part of the "boiler plate" discussion above, I noticed that while there is Category:Israeli settlements, there is no article List of Israeli settlements or List of Israeli illegal settlements. Such an article could flesh out the vague statement in Israeli settlement that As of December 2010, 327,750 Israelis live in the 121 officially-recognised settlements in the West Bank, 192,000 Israelis live in settlements in East Jerusalem and over 20,000 live in settlements in the Golan Heights. (There is an article Israeli settlement timeline which needs updating, FYI.)

The article could be similar in structure to List of Israeli cities, with a lead and photographs. And a list in Columns which could read: Common name, District (in both Israeli and Palestinian terms, if different), Date Established, Area, Population, International Status (mentioning any refs that mention each settlement is illegal under international law, since this is the language that some people would like to get rid of.) There also could be a separate section, say on settlements with planned expansion, settlements that have been abandoned and whatever else might be common to a number of them, as there is in List of Israeli cities. It would be pretty easy fill in the blanks, but I'm reluctant to start and do it all, especially since there probably would be an immediate AfD on some spurious pretext. Anyone game for it?? Creation of Gaza Strip Economy article

Hi all,

I have just joined this group and was planning on creating an in depth page on the Economy of the Gaza Strip.

I was planning on adding several things to the article (not necessarily in this order). 1) An extensive history section covering Gaza during the following time periods: Pre-1947, 1947-2006, and 2006 onwards. I hope to characterize how Israel has affected the economic development of the region, and whether Hamas' leadership has improved or impacted the Gaza economy significantly.

2) Creating an extensive foreign aid sections that covers the impact on the Gaza economy.

3) Creating and condensing the different sectors of the economy into one section, with extensive sub sections for each branch of the market (Energy, Construction, Recreation, Housing, Tourism, and Transport)

4) A section discussing the predicted the economic future of the Gaza Strip.

5) An Unemployment section as well as a Labor and Welfare section.

6) An Economic Overview of the Gaza Strip.

I plan to use some sources from different reports by the US government (Government Accountability Office), as well as published articles (Ilana Feldman “Ad Hoc Humanity: UN Peacekeeping and the Limits of International Community in Gaza” American Anthropologist Vol. 112 No. 3 (2010)) and books (Sara M. Roy, Hamas and civil society in Gaza: engaging the Islamist social sector (Princeton University Press, 2011)). I am still gathering sources at the moment, and plan on using Google Scholar to expand my references.

Additionally, while I plan to be writing about economic functions of the Gaza Strip, I don't have an extensive background in economic systems. I was wondering if there were any economics specialists out there who could offer their insights or analysis on the sources I might be posting, and making sure that I am fitting everything into the big picture correctly.

I would also love any feedback or input anyone could give me on creating this page. I understand that this page and any information I find may be biased either for or against either side, so I was hoping to get a second pair of eyes in evaluating sources and writing impartially.

The 1933 Palestinian Demonstrations

I was reading through this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1933_Palestine_riots) article when I noticed that it claims the Arab Higher Committee, in 1933, called for a general strike. The problem with this claim is that the Arab Higher Committee was established in 1936... I believe the person who edited the article meant the Arab Executive Committee. Palestinian territories or occupied Palestinian territories is a much more dubious and vague term than the PNA and Hamas Administration, because occupied Palestinian territories on one hand are or were defined as West Bank and Gaza combined, but on the other hand are currently more and more related as areas under Palestinian control in parts of WB and in Gaza (PNA and Hamas Administration). In addition, the "occupied Palestinian territories" term is not used by the UN, preferring West Bank and Gaza Strip - the reason being that Israel has indeed occupied those areas in 1967, but at the time the areas were not defined as Palestinian, but rather Jordanian West Bank and Egyptian Gaza Strip.Greyshark09 (talk) 07:37, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

There is nothing vague or dubious about the term Palestinian Territories. It is a well defined and commonly used term used to describe Gaza and the West Bank (including East Jerusalem).

Palestinian Territories is the name used to refer to the West Bank and the Gaza Strip by International media organizations [2], [3], in academic literature [4], by the UN[5], [6], EU [7], individual Governments such as the UK[8] and US[9], international human rights organizations [10], [11], the International Court of Justice [12], and the International committee of the Red Cross [13] among others.

Unless you provide evidence to support your assertions all you are giving us is your personal opinion, which does not carry much weight. Your statement about the UN is flat out wrong. Dlv999 (talk) 07:48, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

I don't think anything you have said there is actually the case. It strikes me a quite a parochial and oddly fragmented way of looking at things. Perhaps it makes sense from the perspective of a subset of citizens of one small country, but it's out of step with RS. As for occupied Palestinian territories, "Palestinian Territory, Occupied" is even part of the ISO 3166 standard used all over the world by countless companies/organizations/systems, and covers both the entire West Bank (inc. East Jerusalem) and Gaza Strip. It seems much more dubious and vague to push for the use of PNA and Hamas Administration to describe what countless sources refer to simply and unambiguously as the Palestinian territories, with or without the "occupied". It's very clear what the Palestinian territories means because it is defined by the green line that separates Israel from not-Israel. Sean.hoyland - talk 13:04, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

Mergers

There are currently two discussions considering the merger of Palestinian villages depopulated in 1948 with the Israeli Moshav and Kibbitz that were later founded on the former land or in the general vicinity of the Palestinian villages. I ask editors to participate in discussions on merger of Al-Kabri -> Kabri (Galilee) and on merger of al-Bassa -> Betzet (Galilee). The Al-Kabri and al-Bassa place names are essentially Arabic pronunciations for existing Kabri and Betzet (Hebrew/Canaanite pronunciations), and belong to still existent localities, with none or negligible changes in location. Currently, the Al-Kabri and al-Bassa articles claim to describe only the Palestinian Arab localities (Mandatory period), even though the villages still exist today within Israel and existed prior to the establishment of Mandatory Palestine (Ottoman and Mamluk periods and earlier). I hence proposed that those articles be merged into Kabri and Betzet accordingly. This merger is in accordance with similar cases of Amka, Ashdod and Caesarea, though in one case the merger was not agreed upon (case of Alma, Palestine and Alma, Israel).Greyshark09 (talk) 21:55, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

OK, we're getting various mostly WP:original research discussions on whether there is now a formal recognized State of Palestine since 29 November 2012 when the UN General Assembly passed United Nations General Assembly resolution 67/19 changing Palestine's status to "non-member state" - implicitly recognising its sovereignty. Do we need a centralized RfC on the issue? Or someone to just do a really good research job for State of Palestine and disseminate it through relevant articles?? However in the english term, you put Moroccan and it concerne people of Maghreb not only Morocco. And the term Mughrabi refere to Maghreb wich is the english terme. Seems that you don't understand : the English name found on English RS is "Moroccan quarter", and WP adopts English common names, it doesn't translate them from other languages per WP:ENG/WP:UE. --Omar-toons (talk) 11:57, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Palestine portal split

Recently user:Emmette Hernandez Coleman proposed to split Portal:Palestine and create Portal:Palestinian territories (see Portal talk:Palestine#Content split), with the rationale that Palestine is a geographic area without specific association with any people or politics, while Palestinian territories is about Palestinian people and modern Palestinian politics. Emmette also has already created a twin template to template:History of Palestine, named template:Governance of Palestine from 1948 to demonstrate this concept. Editor opinions are welcome on the issues of:

• Portal:Palestine content split (at Portal talk:Palestine#Content split)
• Whether template:Governance of Palestine from 1948 should be separate from template:History of Palestine (at Template talk:Governance of Palestine from 1948#Merging with History of Palestine template).

That's not quite my rationale. My rationale is the same rationale that Palestinian territories and Palestine are separate articles, that they are not the same thing. Category:Palestinian feminists

Why does "Palestinian feminists" appear as a category for Tarab Abu Hadi but doesn't show up when you search "Palestinian feminits"? The same seems to apply to "Palestinian activists". Am I missing something obvious? Padres Hana (talk) 10:39, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

I can't find an article for Tarab Abu Hadi. Are you sure you got the name right? And what do you mean by "search Arab feminists" (assuming you spelt that correctly when you searched)? If you type something in the search box, it doesn't lead to the category; you need to open the Category as a page. RolandR (talk) 11:07, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

Jerusalem lead RfC

There is currently a request for comments open about the lead section of the Jerusalem article, and all editors are welcome to give their opinions. The dispute over the lead section is one of the oldest on Wikipedia, dating back to 2003, and focuses on whether or not it is neutral to say that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. The discussion was mandated by the Arbitration Committee, and its result will be binding for three years. Major problems with Rashidieh

This article is about a refugee camp somewhere in Lebanon. Up until April 2013 the article was a fairly normal if stubby article; at that point a single-purpose account User:Reina91 dumped a large amount of non-encyclopedic and highly biased text, most of which is irrelevant to the article. It looks like someone's high school or college essay on Palestinian refugees in general. I suggest a total reversion to this version: [15] but I think someone more experienced in this area should do it to make sure it's kosher. Benwing (talk) 05:51, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

Village missed by Khalidi?

I have almost finished working on a map to go with Operation Yiftach and appear to have found a village not mentioned in "All That Remains". It is Rihaniya in Safad district, not to be confused with the village with same name in Haifa district. On the 1946 map it is marked as just south of 'Alma. Morris says it was inhabited by Circassians and surrendered during Operation Hiram. Expulsion of the population was discussed in 1949. My 1977 Carta's Israel Road Guide has it marked (established 1870). Is there any futher information? It is not mentioned in the Hiram article. Does it deserve a page? You're probably referring to Rehaniya. Khalidi only wrote about depopulated villages. --Al Ameer 16:57, 20 July 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for this. I keep getting caught out by the spellings as well as Khalidi not mentioning the villages which survived despite being attacked and attempts made to clear them. To my knowledge, no they're not. I do think that Chechens often fall into the "Circassian diaspora" category, but I'm not sure if that means they're Circassians. See Circassians in Iraq. --Al Ameer 21:59, 20 July 2013 (UTC)

Martial Law

I have been using Martial law#Israel as a link from some of the villages in Galilee. Does the military administration post 1967 count as Martial Law? The West bank was placed under military administration, ie Martial Law...

That was the same in 1949 for all the territories captured by Israel that were not in the partition plan but I don't know when it stopped.

Many of the Israel and Palestine pages don't have maps. They'd help put everything in context I'd think.

For example, could this page have this map added to it? Many of the other regional councils have maps on the hebrew language wiki as well.

Village in Ramallah governorate

Could someone please have a look at Al-Mughayyir (Ramallah gov.)? I wanted to move this article to Al-Mughayyir, Ramallah and noticed that there is already an article about a village of this name and in this governorate. WikiProject Palestine overhaul and cleanup proposal

I propose to attempt a major cleanup of this project page, removing the out-of-date parts and focusing solely on the "live" pieces which have proved useful to editors over the years. Specifically that means:

• Removing Template:PALCOTM and Wikipedia:WikiProject Palestine/Collaboration (neither have been updated since 2008) Done
• Moving Wikipedia:Notice board for Palestine-related topics (not utilised since 2010) to become an archive on the project talk page Done
• Removing Wikipedia:WikiProject Palestine/Topic as it is not reflective of this project and is not necessary as is well covered at the Portal (where it is more appropriate) Done
• RemoveArchive and delink Wikipedia:WikiProject Palestine/Tasks, Portal:Palestine/Opentask and Wikipedia:WikiProject Palestine/to do as they are not used, since they have been superseded by the excellent Wikipedia:WikiProject Palestine/Assessment/Statistics/Table Done
• Add in a Palestine version of a popular pages table at WP:POPT
• Automate the new articles page with a bot Done

I wonder if the map of historical Palestine with the PLO/Palestinian flag reminding the extreme point of view of the nationalist claims is welcome. The State of Palestine that is currently recognized as observer is not that one... I would avoid any map.

Hmm. For the record, this WikiProject is about a combination of the State of Palestine, historical Palestine and the Palestinian people. Don't forget that the "Palestinian people" define themselves as Palestinian by the borders of historical Palestine - so it is not an extreme position but the mainstream identity of Palestinians. Antisemitism in the Arab world

There are serious issues with this article, especially what pertains to quotes of Palestinians leaders about the Jewish state, that are categorized as "anti-Semitic". Maybe some of these quotes seem anti-Semitic because they are taken out of context, but in context I think that they merely reflect an (arguably) legitimate critique of Jewish privilege in the Jewish state. This could be a bit delicate, so wondering if anybody would like to help to carry some modifications to the page Engelo (talk) 17:12, 6 March 2014 (UTC)

Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions

Hello all, I am not sure if this is the appropriate place to post for advice about this topic (I have already posted on the Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Israel Palestine Collaboration page) and my apologies if it is not, however, here is my issue at hand:

I am troubled by the skewed POV from which the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions page has been mostly comprised--especially the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions#Supporters section, which seems to be largely presented in a decidedly negative and less-than-thorough light. I have written a portion of text on the Israeli and international Jewish support for the movement in order to counter the inadequacies of the current article and to promote a more even and nuanced representation of support for the movement. This sort of information does not fit into the current country-by-country breakdown of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions#Reaction because it is international in scope. I think that this is fair cause to add the new section I have compiled, but I would appreciate any feedback and/or comments as to how to go about doing so in a way that will not jeopardize the NPOV of the article. I am happy to post what I have written for editing by fellow members of this group, otherwise I want to make the post live a week from today at this time. Any input would be very helpful. I would like to join this project and I guess this is the place to make that request. I am an American woman who is pro-Palestinian and has been for over 40 years. I have a commitment to sourcing the info I present and to listening to my adversaries, too. I like to think I am a person of good will toward (almost) everyone. I have done quite a bit of reading of Wikiproject: Palestine articles, and frankly I haven't contributed anything much yet because I think the articles are not only very good, but also a resource I need to learn from before I make any changes. article request - is this a good idea?

I guess I have somewhat of a flair for sniffing out controversy...
Decades ago in discussions with some pretty militant and savvy Palestinian friends in Beirut, they confirmed my understanding that Palestinians were almost certainly descended in large part from the Jewish population of Roman era Palestine. This knowledge didn't seem to ruffle their feathers a bit; their attitude was "of course, the Palestinians are descended from everyone who ever inhabited Palestine."
Flash forward 30 years. In 2009, a joint study by Hebrew University and Hadassah Medical Center, headed by Ariella Oppenheim, confirmed this hypothesis in spades. The study showed that 80% to 85% of Palestinian haplotype groups were identical with that of ancient Jews, whereas only 72% of the modern European Jewish haplotypes was a match for ancient Jews. This discovery led to a television program in Israel that was predictably incendiary with its implications for the Law of Return. I have access to JSTOR and other sources, have searched under Dr. Oppenheim's name, Hadassah Medical Center, Hebrew University, and it is pretty clear that not only has the original research not been translated into English, it is evidently being actively suppressed.

At the risk of upsetting some people, I would like to see a Wikipedia article on this research study, the television program, the reaction in Israel, and the small peace movement it inspired.

1 - Is this a good idea for an article? I like it largely because it is very clear that Zionists are made acutely uncomfortable by it and its implications for the "Law of Return." I'll admit that I enjoy seeing those opposed to Palestinian nationalism at a loss for words. But is this phenomenon truly encyclopedia worthy?
2 - Can anyone help me? I know nothing about genetics or about the study itself, especially considering it was only published in Hebrew, apparently, and I do not speak Hebrew.

The two relevant places to start are: Genetic studies on Jews and Palestinian_people#DNA_and_genetic_studies.

I think an article named Genetic studies on Palestinians could work, which would start by demerging from the section in the Palestinian people article.

The question to my mind is whether it might be better to have a combined article called Genetic studies on Jews and Palestinians.

Anyway, the best way to learn here is to get going, small and steady, and WP:BEBOLD!

I'm not sure what you mean by "I've just had a look at the article on the 1948 Palestine war and noted villages evacuated by Jews". As the article notes, "The list of villages depopulated during the Arab–Israeli conflict includes more than 400 Arab villages. It also includes about ten Jewish villages and neighbourhoods". Which villages are you referring to, and what is the relevance of this statement? RolandR (talk) 00:32, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

Since a lot of Palestinians want back some or all of the land taken from 1948, I don't think a template would fly with them. It would only apply to that percent willing to settle for that. Abu Khdeir

There are major problems in the Talk page to article Kidnapping and murder of Mohammed Abu Khdeir, not the least of which is POV (esp. inclusion of unrelated material). One particular editor seems to be trying to hijack this article, even deciding he can remove material from reliable sources. I would love to engage in a meaningful discussion but it seems almost impossible with him. He is trying to enlist support from an Israeli moderator,[17] so for the sake of balance in the discussion, I think people from more persuasionsshould weigh in as well. As can be seen, this editor copied text in order to deflect attention away from him. It is obvious that Peleio is the one who has hijacked this article. It is maintained by the Palestine Review, and claims to provide "the largest online library of free ebooks on Palestine", and has links to what looks like hundreds of e-books. These are of variable quality, from the invaluable poems of Mahmud Darwish and Edward Said's Orientalism to the absurd hoax The Life of an American Jew in Racist Marxist Israel by the fictitious "Jack Bernstein". Can these lists be made?

Hi. So i was just searching Wiki. And i found that yearly lists of "Palestinian rocket attacks on Israel" are available on Wiki. Like: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Palestinian_rocket_attacks_on_Israel,_2001 But there are no such yearly lists of "Palestinians killed by Israeli Security Forces". Should they be created? Should i start work on them? Data can be taken from B'Tselem website (among other places). for example: http://www.btselem.org/statistics/fatalities/before-cast-lead/by-date-of-event/wb-gaza/palestinians-killed-by-israeli-security-forces this is the data from 2000-2008. Yes something like the "list of Palestinian civilian casualties in second intifada" but that just includes second intifada. I am thinking more of like a yearly list. Yes, this List of Israeli assassinations probably covers some of those; but still it is not the "List of Palestinian Civilians killed by Israeli forces" which is what i am talking about. Also it mentions minors and women separately. So, at least they are "civilians". Any how, even if there is a controversy, that IMHO does not preclude the creation of such a list. If there would be any doubts about which cases to add or not, it would be discussed in the respective talk pages. I dont see why we should not even try to create such lists, just because there is some controversy. Just like the "Rocket attacks" pages i have referred to. Its not our place to discuss whether occupied people can resort to violence under international law or not, here on wikipedia. But we can surely try making such lists. Wouldnt you agree? A talk page discussion is not sufficient to decide whether a person is a militant or a civilian. If there are contradicting sources with some saying that a person is a civilian and some that it's a militant, per WP:NPOV you need to mention both claims when you describe the person. I believe these lists would be redundant, but you can wait to see what other people think, or you can be WP:BOLD and begin working on such a list. Palestine - a featured article?

Is anyone here familiar with the process of getting to WP:FA status? I read Wikipedia:Featured article criteria and concluded that the Palestine article, which has just been promoted to GA, may already qualify for FA. Having said that, since I have edited the article in a lot of detail recently, I may just be too close to it to "see the wood from the trees". I've been involved with a few FAs. I agree that Palestine may qualify, with just a little improvement. (As examples of "problems", I see that some names in the "Bibliography" section are linked more than once, Ilan Pappé's name is spelled inconsistently, and some footnotes (28, 29, and 30) are in a different format than the rest.) Typically, editors ask for a WP:Peer review before nominating an article for FA, which helps identify any potential issues. — Malik Shabazz ^Talk/_Stalk 21:03, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

Anyone with access to this book by Bellarmino Bagatti?

I had a discussion with Huldra regarding what is in a book about Beit Kama and al-Jammama. We don't know which statement it was meant to support as it was added along with two other sources that support different statements. The book is named "Ancient Christian Villages of Judaea and the Negev" and was written by Bellarmino Bagatti. This was added. Page 149 to that book is mentioned. Ok, the Italian edition (1983) has a few paragraphs on al-Jamama but they don't mention anything post-1948. There is no mention of Beit Kama in the book as far as I can tell. Perhaps the only thing then the editor added from Bellarmino Bagatti's book was that it was a Palestinian Christian village. The 1967 Census on the Levy Economics Institute

Some weeks ago when I was looking on some towns in Sinai and their demographic statistics and then searching on it, I found this very interesting page: The 1967 Census of the West Bank and Gaza Strip: A Digitized Version on the Levy Economics Institute of Bard College. They have digitized the 1967 census taken by Israel in the the occupied territories. Amongst others, it also contains a comparison with the 1961 census in the West Bank taken by Jordan and the Egyptian 1966 estimate for the Gaza Strip. Now that I did some work on Hebron, I took some demographic statistics from it.

I am not sure if I understand you correct but there is a big difference between the census of 1961 and 1967 because of the 1967 Palestinian exodus. If it was not for this, and the stripping of residency rights, the West Bank and Gaza would have much bigger populations. There were also incentives to make them emigrate. There is much info about decline of the population after 1967 war. Depending on what type of comparision is going to be made, it can be useful to use the data or add population figures for towns etc. --IRISZOOM (talk) 14:29, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

The west bank and gaza are not classified as israel. How can the title be: Palestinian return to Israel?

Arbcom for an official Wiki position on Jerusalem and her location

Even though the United States and International Community have ruled many a time on the position of Jerusalem, Wikipedia sometimes moves a bit slower. In light of today's Supreme Court decision, I feel like now more than ever there should be an officially arbitrated position as to the location of Jerusalem, somewhere along the lines of US/International opinion--though that'd be up to WIki to decide.

How would I go about getting this process started?

Just to clarify, the US Supreme Court did not rule on the status of Jerusalem, and expressed no opinion in the matter. Map of early Ottoman Palestine

Does anyone know where we could find a map of Palestine from the early Ottoman era that shows the sanjaks of Safad, Lajjun, Nablus, Jerusalem and Gaza? Prior to 1660, they were all administratively part of the Damascus Eyalet and after 1660, the Sanjak of Safad became part of the Sidon Eyalet. I've seen the map a few times before, but can't for the life of me remember where. I want to have a map created to use in a number of articles related to the subject, but would like to have a reference point for district and provincial boundaries instead of depending on my own educated guesses. --Al Ameer (talk) 20:43, 9 September 2015 (UTC)
